Sunday Leader Sacks Mandana

The service contract of the Associate Editor of The Sunday Leader newspaper Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema who recently fled the country after her residence was attacked, has been terminated with immediate effect by Leader Publications.

Mandana

The service of her husband Romesh Abeywickrema who was the business editor of the same newspaper has also been terminated. The sackings happened by email on Friday night the Colombo Telegraph learns.

The reasons for this dual termination were not immediately clear. Ismail Abeywickrema, her husband and daughter left Sri Lanka for a “North American country” in September. Her house was attacked and burgled by armed attackers on 24 August.

The Sunday Leader newspaper, formerly known as a publication that was strongly critical of the current Government, was purchased in 2012 by a businessman close to the ruling Rajapaksa regime, three years after the newspaper’s founding editor Lasantha Wickrematunge and strident critic of the Rajapaksa regime was killed on his way to work.

      Fatima and other Avatars,

So this regime helps Sri Lankans get visas in the West and leave the country.

One way to solve the economic and unemployment problem, without Chinese loans.

All those housemaids selling their life to wicked Gulf Arabs and their agents should simply become Journalists then.

Even Island is singing hosanna for Rajapakses.
Everybody in Sri Lanka has to read only UPFA news.

There is no more news tell the other side of the affairs in the country.

She probably sent her resignation from a “North American country”.

She would be over the moon because all she ever wanted, like Sonali Samarasinghe and Frederica Jansz, to get asylum in “a North American country” by provoking government people through all the ‘bloody’ attacks on them.

    Good riddance to her.

She is lucky to be alive today and safe outside than living in Sri Lanka. What a contradiction to the claim made by MR at the UN the other day that Sri Lanka is safe now for all it’s citizens. Mind you she was attacked just the day before Navi Pillai arrived here shows the disrespect and impunity of the Tajapaksa regime. Way to go Sri Lanka.

unfortunately soon there will be none to speak up of what is going on…

I dont think so. They will not be able to fence around the fearless writers. Coming colour is not good for Rajapakshes.

It was more than likely that the break In to to her house was a well planned set up. Sri Lankans will do anything to get a foreign citizenship.

and you think foreign countries are stupid to give visas without doing their own research. You must be doing a menial job in the US because you underestimate the whites so much and think they are of your standard.

Those who give full respect to the whites only can beat them.

So you believe the brake in to Mandana’s was well planned by Mandana? What about that dead man, the Police shot? and the other four now in custody, for all I know now being released.

Sunday leaders authority has to obey the authority of the authoritarian rule. We should realise the fact that what JR J said” I have all the powers except to change a man to woman or vice versa”. Who gave the power? It is Sinhala people!

So, MANDANA is in either Canada or most probably in the United States.

She will understand, after some time, that Sri Lanka is far better than right now the United States.

jim dafty,so why don’t the srilankans in the US not even trickle back to srilanka let alone flood back.

Sour grapes mate. You didn’t get the opportunity to go abroad no?

I seriosuly doubt Sri Lanka , or for that matter any South Asian country , can come close to how good the US is, in the near or distant future. I am not speaking purely of economical matters, but freedom to criticise government , religion and whoever the hell one wishes.

To the Fathima (without the “c” in her last name), JimPissa,Soothsayer,Jay Pathbey and the rest of the well paid Vile Brigade:
What the f..k are you going to say about “asylum-seeking” if this woman comes back, you b….ds?
What you have to say about a woman and her 10-year old daughter who were TWICE terrorised by the “catchers” your buddies sent to silence her expose of massive corruption by your “handlers” speaks loudly enough. You only confirm your brand of “Sinhala Buddhism” that is rotting the moral fibre of this country.
The day that you meet the same fate that your dictator enemies have coming to them will be a day of Kavun and Kiribath in this country.

      Ask your mother you coward.
Why do you write under a bogus name if you are such a straight man you heap of skit.
Write under your real name you [Edited out] if you want to abuse people.

You are a shame on all Sri Lankans, you [Edited out].

        Soothsayer:
I’d describe you as what comes out of the south end of a bull going north, except that I have more respect than that for a bull.
I don’t want to commit suicide by being bumped off by the people who pay you, that’s why I use a pseudonym. What’s your reason you person of indeterminate parentage? Don’t want anyone to know who REALLY writes such nonsense on behalf of those who wanted to kill Mandana and her family, including her ten-year old daughter? Or is your REAL name “Soothsayer,” because if it isn’t I have a few (unprintable) suggestions for a change that could be much more appropriate!

Those who accuse her of orchestrating this to get a visa to go abroad, seems to be ignorant of the fact that getting visa’s from western countries, is not that easy. You have to prove you were attacked and threatened, show police reports, documents, and make the case that your life is in danger. Western countries do not open doors by only your stories. These journalist who leave the country, also leave their professions. They cannot become well known journalists in these countries, like they are in Sri Lanka, because they are disadvantaged as a new migrant, and have no in depth knowledge of the politics over there.
It is the propaganda of the rajapaksa regime and their devotees here to blame the victim for everything, blame the officials from the UN and other bodies for the investigations they call for, and every country that speaks out, and they do not have the decency to admit to their crimes.
No one can blame these journalists of being afraid for their lives. REMEMBER LASANTHA?
So those who make stupid statements about this being a ruse to get visas, think again.

If you are unaware.. there are so many western embassies who offer asylum when they see avenues , for their own benefit. but in return you may sometimes have to brand your [Edited out], just for your own survival. Sunanda deshapriya is the best example.

What benefit do western countries have, by offering asylum to journalists? These Journalists simply become yet another resident in these countries, and join the rest of the work force, since it will be hard to get similar employment, and they have no name recognition in their new country. Right now Sri Lanka is notorious for silencing journalists, killing and threatening them, in fact the dodger from temple trees had to address that question when he was interviewed by Al Jazeera. These western countries do not give every journalist asylum, unless it can be proved they are threatened or in danger. In that case all our journalists would be heading for these countries.

        Excerpt from a CNN article:

“Though the last journalist killings in Sri Lanka were four years ago, 25 members of the press have been murdered in the country since 1999, according to the CPJ.
Nine of the murders in the past decade remain unsolved. More than 63% of journalists killed in the country covered politics as a part of their work.
In the past five years, 20 journalists have fled the country amid “a climate of intense intimidation,” the CPJ says.
Last year, citing national security, the government blocked a freedom of information bill, further denying journalists and citizens access to documents.”

        http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/16/world/asia/sri-lanka-journalist-shot/index.html

The rajapaks regime is responsible for the safety of all citizens, including journalists, and those who speak out against them, is mysteriously attacked, threatened or killed.

Dhaksha, I know of a Sinhalese man who had an issue with the local politician got himself beaten up with publicity given in the press. He collected many such articles and built up a case. He also said his life is in danger and that he wife had died/killed and was able to get the US green card! He was in New York driving taxis and now moved to Chicago. You can bluff the western embassies very easily! He also visits his wife regularly!! Unfortunately the wife can’t go because she is suppose to be dead!!

Why do people take treacherous boat trips paying huge sums of money to get asylum in other country’s when there are much more easier ways on offer. Just punch your self hard and blame the Rajapaksha’s. ask mandana, ask deshapriya ask manjula….

What else do you expect from the current ownershp of The Sunday Leader, who is a crony of Rajapaksas. The crony also sacked the ex-editor Frederica Jansz who was thretened to be murdered by a Rajapakse , the Secretary of Defence and apologised for exposing his complicity. The Sunday Leader has become another government dictated Newspaper leaving CT to do the job of being an only objective media.
