Retired Major General Kamal Gunaratne insisted that the “traitors” who attempt to divide the country introducing a new constitution must be killed. Reminding the 1986-1989 JVP insurrection he said those traitors must not be given a decent funeral.
The former Commander Security Forces Headquarters – Wanni made the above remarks on Saturday in a meeting organised by Viyathmaga.
Former Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa chaired the meeting, which was also addressed by General Secretary of the Patriotic National Movement Dr. Wasantha Bandara, Design Director of Kandygs Anuradha Yahampath and Dr. Nalaka Godahewa.
Gunaratne said that the government was trying to bring in the new Constitution on the requirement of the Western forces and Tamil Diaspora to please Tamil separatists. He also criticised the government’s reconciliation process.
In his 26 minutes speech he castigated the people who want to introduce a new constitution and supporters of the new constitution as “traitors to the country”

I have this self imposed rule that I will not attack parents, grannies etc. when commenting. I think we need an amendment to that. If the other party brings in anyone, then there is no such immunity. No, culture is something common to many. What I meant is more like the charactor of a person. Even if some are graduates, they just behave like no second to uneducated people. A Pansakula for Prabha: Prabha is a hero and sacrificed so much for the cause. With that in mind and as a form of reconciliation I am arranging a one day Pinkama on his death anniversary. All except Mara, Gota, Kamal Gunaratne are welcome.
Bring a chicken, preferably a Vanni RIR. As a lot of Muslims are expected to participate in this reconciliation exercise (including 90% of the close relatives of the Kattankudy massacre victims) the chicken will be killed using Halal rites. If Prabha was allowed to continue fighting there would have been no Tamils left in Sri Lanka by now even to be used as medicine. (බේතකටවත් හොයාගන්න ඉතුරු වෙන්නෙ නෑ). There was no need for our Rana Viruvan to die.
But MARA, Gota, aided and abated by traitors like Kamal had other plans. The logic went like this: No Tamils – No War. No War – No Weapons. No weapons – No money spent. No money spent – No cuts. So you see? It is all a matter of cuts. With all avenues cut for cuts, they are looking for rejuvenating the Tamils again for a war. This time part of the cuts will go to the lankens (refugee Tamils) living EU and other God forsaken places.

Very agree with you. Today s folks would not see the caste as had been the case in 70ties and 80ties. I have no doubt this parituclar Edwin should have suffered a lot by the caste to repeat the kind of issues today as if we have nothing better to discuss with.
There are the kind of our people in this country, they would not change this mind sets even if they would have the chance to get on with foreign nationalities. Latter has been one of the key social problems saddly. Some think the caste and creed above anything else. I know how it was in our childhood days. My father focused on the Kulaya above everything. Today, he is 90 year old man – but being called Seeya by even anyone that worked for his plantations few decades ago. Today most of them dont care about the caste – which is a good thing actually. I have listened again today to all the assertions made by this Major General who was employed to fight in a Civil War whose origins he seems not to have studied at all. Yes, the LTTE leader, Prabhakaran, was a ruthless killer who allowed no dissenters among his own people. Among the top leadership there were undoubtedly many who enjoyed the power that they began to wield. One of their main strategies was to strike terror in to all Sri Lankan citizens by using a variety of methods to detonate bombs that killed indiscriminately. We knew them to be disciplined, and we knew that they represented persons who had certain grievances. But they had long previously decided that they had to destroy systematically, and not sincerely negotiate. There were peacenicks on both sides. With hindsight we acknowledge that other means did succeed. The Tigers HAD to be countered, by the armed forces; the forces also finished it off.

Ideally the armed forces should have been disciplined and professional. This can rarely apply to every single soldier. Why would most volunteer to join a military? I wouldn’t want to generalise, but there must surely be those who join because they just like to kill. This would apply to any armed force. However, I know that Gamini Kularatne of Haslaka was not the only soldier who volunteered with nobler motives. I remember the sincerity of many in my community who felt that “Tamil extremists” had to be defeated militarily, and some joined with a commitment to defeat the evil that they saw embodied in the LTTE. Most are forgotten now. I wonder what Kularatne would now think, if he saw how his nobility is used to create more hatred and dissension.

This Kamal Guneratne’s speech is NOT disciplined. It is full of hate. He voices hatred of all those who disagree with him. Now that the war is over, my main concern certainly is that there should never again be a repeat of this tragic war. When the war was finally over, I felt relief. Gratitude there was for those who brought it to an end, but I was always conscious that it was essentially a conflict between the speakers of Sinhala and speakers of Tamil. There were reports of the recruitment of child soldiers by the Tigers, of ruthless suppression of dissident Tamils, of the use of the aged and of infants as “human shields”. However, we also knew that the LTTE hardly ever violated the chastity of women.

There have been serious allegations of violations of human norms by our armed forces. We have heard the hate-filled speeches of Gotabaya and now of Guneratne. We have forced ourselves to see some of the video footage, and we know that it can’t all have been made up. We know how our soldiers behaved in Haiti. We know that some of this may have to be investigated, unless we, Sinhalese, can find some other way of convincing the Tamils that the future will be one of reconciliation and progress. It is time to talk of solutions. That is why I feel that we must have a Constitution which will allow this country to progress peacefully. Those who think this way do NOT want to impose our previously decided plans on others. We are willing to discuss and modify our thoughts. The soldiers job is done. Hate filled rhetoric must stop. We can extrapolate the behaviour of groups in war by observing their behaviour outside war situations . The trouble is the ostrich-like attitude of many. If it didn’t happen to me, it didn’t happen. Or, Winston Churchill did it, why not me?
