Take A Stand For Injustice

Take A Stand For Injustice: Mervyn’s Goon’s March Going On Right Now

By Visakha Tillekeratne

Mervyn Silva

In order to show our solidarity as right thinking citizens of Sri Lanka (not anti Rajapaksa but pro good governance citizens by the way) and to protect the tragic situation that the judiciary is in today, a friend and I took to the streets of Hultsdorpf around 10.40 am to join in with the lawyers at the People’s March, to take a stand for Justice. We were dressed in black and white to show our solidarity that this is indeed, a black and white issue. Of course as a result we were easily identifiable as those supporting the cause. Could not get near the meeting organized by lawyers, but got first hand experience of government goon squads.

As we attempted to get past the roundabout opposite the Supreme Court, a group of thugs who could be identified as drug addicts and drunkards, lured to the area with a bottle of arrack and  packet of lunch, intimated us with poles and stepped threateningly towards both of us and the persons standing by who were also intimated.  The language used wasmild at first and  obscene to the extreme towards the end of the dialogue. These loyalists of the government shouted saying we are Sri Lankans and who are you? It was a good opportunity to stand our ground and to say we too are Sri Lankans, but for a righteous Sri Lanka. Looking at their faces, these men would stop at nothing, and the violence that one sees is real and horrendous.

Later on several of these violent demonstrators were identified as residents of Kelaniya and Mervyn loyalists, who are released all over the country when the state requires intimidation of its citizens. These incidents are quite frequent today, as is well known.

We moved on near the Bo Tree outside the courts and were standing by near some kiosks to ask a lawyer to accompany us into the demonstration, when all hell broke loose and the intimidators started running towards a group of supporters of the lawyers, using filth and brandishing their instruments of terror. The building we stepped into was also attacked and the glass broken. All this happened while the Police were standing by, passively.

It was extremely heartening to be part of this experience and to realize the dangers and vulnerabilities of being Sri Lankan. It also strengthens one’s resolve to bring about what is right, through peaceful and intelligent actions that are strategic and long lasting.

One cannot help but think of the prudent and timely direction, given by Dr Deepika Udugama, academic of repute and human rights activist, at a seminar, on the 8th of January – Sanvada, organized to make the youth of Sri Lanka aware of the current crisis with regard to the impeachment. Dr Udugama was quick to point out that people’s sovereignty reigns supreme, and to give vent to that power of sovereignty, it is the middle class and professionals who should and can give leadership to positive and peaceful change, as the poor and marginalized have too many problems of their own to be concerned about such matters and are deliberately denied the right kind of information to act. This is true for Sri Lanka, unlike India where the poor do come out on the streets against injustice and have vibrant protests. Of course the Indian government does not intimidate its people and it is a healthy democracy.

So fellow citizens of the middle class, you will have to come out of your introspection and comfortable existence to make a change. Save the country for the next generation, to say our forefathers have safeguarded not only the land and assets, but values, principles and the rule of law.

Great . Unlike in India it is the young whose future is about who are passive, FB does not have any comments suggesting the young are still silent.

The writer knows nothing about Freedom to talk of Democracy in India.

Once I was in Old Delhi when Indira Gandhi spoke and within seconds there was a lathi charge and stampede- several dead and at least 200k slippers.

In another incident when Indira sat on the culvert at Delhi all hell broke loose throughout India – al the bicycles were thrown into the nearby rivers and many folk were beaten to death.

Present violence is not even a drop in the ocean compared to India where folk self-immolate themselves.

India is Hypocrisy built by and nourished by the west for its benefit.

      You reap what you sow.

Garawi:”you approve what MR does in Sri Lanka?”
Your question borders on escapism. You don’t read international news? This protest is not even a mosquito bite nor is it a mass movement to have any effect even in SL. That’s the realistic side.
You voted MR and he is doing what the IC trained him to do so be careful of his anti-terror tactics.
He is exhibiting he has several plans A,B,C,D which is something no previous leader had. Isn’t he now boasting that he is the only man on earth to finish off terrorism and attempting to trade his expertise? When he makes it like Saudi the IC would be proud of him. You reap what you sow.

    Visakha Tillekeratne:
You are to be commended and congratulated for what you’ve done. Yet another instance of a woman showing up the “Friday Forums” and their inconsequential “media releases” for the USELESS empty rhetoric that they constitute.
Your call to arms is heartening indeed and I can do no better than repeat it here: “So fellow citizens of the middle class, you will have to come out of your introspection and comfortable existence to make a change. Save the country for the next generation, to say our forefathers have safeguarded not only the land and assets, but values, principles and the rule of law.” Wake up Sri Lanka before it is too late!

Its the hightime that the masses come to a united stand against the Dictator and the end of the rule of law.

New Medamulana jungle law will be start from next week with the new CJ stooge and that will be the last nail of democracy.

This is the last chance and all should get to the streets or better still the whole country must be asked to be indoors without going for work. This is the beginning and just what RAJATHUMA promised us.
Sarath Silva is the bastard who paved the way for Pole Vaulters to continue. THEY DO NOT REFLECT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE
WHAT RIFGHT HAS MR GOT TO RESORT TO THESE DIRTY STUNTS. HE WILL HAVE IT FROM WITHIN SOON IF TRUTH AND JUSTICE IS TRAMPLED BY FRAUDS LIKE THIS

Visakha as usual has been brave to express the sovereignty of the people. However the polu balakaya of Mervyn, duminda, and sumathi overlaps with the nil balakaya to intimidate protesters. What happened when people came out in protest against the illegal procedure to break his bones of SF is repeating! However, then there we only a few from the legal fraternity for SF with many of the judges on the other side including the CJ, who even gave biased judgements, this time it is the judiciary being threatened! Can the thug arm of the government break the legal system. Take note, this is only the beginning of a Pol Pot or an Idi Amin, reign. The burial grounds for the literate is still at the making!
Prof. Udagama like action is what is needed to get to the grassroots. Who gets onto internet? Even so what percentage go to sex sites as opposed to Colombo Telegraph or Ground Views? We have to get out of intellectual self stimulation and go to grassroots, otherwise it may be a lost cause as what happened to SF who dared to challenge the executive with the backing of people like Ranil and Sarath N Silva who made SF an orphan when they realized backing the executive is ‘WORTHWHILE’. Anyway Rainil and Sarah N are lost causes!

Violence begets violence. A Somarama or Buddharakkita will bring an
end or the start of actual Dictatorship. The quicker things take place
in the right direction the better it would be for a future Sri Lanka??

All courage to show your dissent against the attempts being made to install ‘jungle law’ by force is truly commendable. It becomes more precious when the professional bodies just sit and make statements that are most welcome by MR’s lawless administration. At least, like as happened in Pakistan, the lawyer bunch in this country should have demonstrated that they have will and commitment to stand against any unlawful move to unseat the CJ. They should have declared total stoppage of work ‘until this matter is resolved with due respect to the rule of law’ by the govt. And let the Rajapakse administration learn a lesion that deploying of thugs against their peaceful demonstration is denounced with total contempt. There is no doubt that the people of this country do not wish to ask to government to bin the charge sheet levelled against the CJ. What they demand is to afford this lady a fair trial to prove her innocence. People do not want the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal to do laundry work for the failed regime.

This reminds me of a similar encounter on 22 December 1982, on Duplication Road just near Deal Place. Fortunately I was whisked away when threatened by a gun-toting government MP (pointing his gun straight my head). He demanded my camera with which I had being photographing “events” in Colombo 3 and 7 (3 and 7!, not 14 or 2, not even 6!). His thugs surrounded the vehicle of strangers who had stopped to help me (and former Senator and much missed lawyer S. Nadesan), and insisted on “rescuing” us from the danger we were in. The vehicle’s occupants were not known to me, but they knew Nadesan. They were the family of a former Speaker (or Clerk? right now my memory fails me) to the House. I was so suspicious and nervous after the events leading up to the referendum and on Re day that I almost refused to get into their van, despite the growing numbers of thugs and the appearance of the armed MP, throughout those frightening moments, all the time, police officers sat in a car on the opposite side of the road — just WATCHING. Nothing else.
The MP who threatened me (he didnt get my camera and the photographs were processed), had already used his gun on several other occasions that morning — threatening Presiding Officers at a Flower Rd polling station and pistol whipping an Opposition observer in another. A letter to the then President, detailing this MP’s behaviour on the 22nd December resulted in his being promoted to a deputy Ministership (Home Guards). During the referendum campaign among other things I had attempted to convince my strongly UNP neighbour (a “good Sinhala Christian lady”) that she should vote against the govt’s proposal in the referendum, but vote for her party as usual in a general election. I have never forgotten her words: “My party, RIGHT OR WRONG!” However there were quite a number of lifelong UNP supporters who didnt support the referendum, just as there were quite a few SLFP party members, even youth organisers (e.g. Basil Rajapakse who appeared on several platforms with JR urging people to support the referendum)who crossed over to the govt in their eagerness to ensure the parliamentary life of many discredited MPS for another 6 long years.

This is what I read this morning

“If the SLFP Kelaniya orgniser’s involvement is proved, the party would not hesitate to take disciplinary action against him,” Aluthgamage said.

How many times the PARTY has taken IN THE RECENT PAST due actions against this MERVIN ?

So they will not find this man guilty for any crimes so long the relationship of the criminal would shatter.. that cannot be shattered because MR has lot to hide – and all those will come to surface if MERVIN – will be charged accordingly.

This kind of criminal politicians had short lives in the history, but today, that has gone that far – so that they can stay shamelessly because the sponsor is given DIRECT by Nation^s president.

They have only to check to whom these guns have been issued. Then they can arrest him.

      • 0
        0

over 90% of the population will agree with the rulers would lock up MERVIN. No doubt about that. The puzzle before the many is whether the incumbent president has untold stories that may come to surface in case the filthy mouth – multy criminal controversial minister of his cabinet would be cornered in that way. This is the question that many would find stalemate reactions.

Even if the man would use the most disgusting talks keeping the buddhist monks sitting next to him, people and the powerful politicians will further stay mum – is a hint to many that everyone in the ruling coalition has lot to cover if each of them would be forced to declare about their illegal activities. TO my memory this is the most disgusting cabinet that the lankens ever has got when closely concerning about the nature it goes forward.

Aluthgamage himself came from Nawalapitiya seat via the back door. He was not elected really. MR appointed him effectively. He is the one ruining the SL cricket too. This is another vermin who should not be in politics.

Why is it that every counter demonstration/ demonstration giving support to the Govt. is sponsored, by arrack, bath packet, Rs1000 note, free bus ride from wherever, poles and sticks also provided.

Is this what the Sri Lankan Govt. and its backers are reduced to, using the money pilfered by the people for the said demonstrations?

Is there no genuine from the heart demonstration for this Govt. anymore? Then they have lost all credibility, so let us actually show that it is the case and fight for change.

Who are what are we waiting for? A leader we can all trust in and believe in!

The constitution of any country is the foundaation or basis for running the affairs of the country and its people; approved by a referendum, voted by all the people.

The executive, legislature and the judiciary are created by the constitution.

The created can never be above the creator!

The Supreme Court is created to guard the constitution and is the final authority to interpret the constitution; not the legislature or the executive.

The matters in SL are conducted since 1972 as if the legislature is supreme than the constitution. This act violates a “constitution” which is not approved by a referendum in 1972 in which the citizens participated, expressing their wish by casting individual votes.

The crisis in SL is therefore a constitutional crisis.

Sun, I also heard Aluthgamage saying it on TV. Even if his involvement is suspected (not wait for proving)and sufficient evidence is available he should be taken to custody and produced before a Magistrate. Why should we wait for party to take action when Police should arrest him.

These Mervin’s and Rajapakse’s home town goon notorious Thugs were brought from their homes in Hambantota, Weeraketiya, Walasmulla,Beliatte, Angunakolapalessa etc… brought colombo in 1995 onwards and were settled in kelaniya,Kiribathgoda, Thotalanga, Mahawatte, vanathyamulla area giving them urban counsil jobs and using them for criminal activities as kappan, drug dealers, and in Colombo harbour using them as smugglers and underworld criminals to suppress opposition parties, media personnel and civil and human right activists..

These are the thugs who make all the havoc in Colombo with criminal activities, murder and drug dealing.

Therefore what the opposition and CJ, Judiciary, and Sc should do is …
    ————————————————————————-
1)Get as much exposure to both Local and Foreign Media even with using foreign and local Radio and TV broadcast Channels to tell the world on MARA’s dictatorial atrocities.

2)Educate local Foreign diplomatic Community on the reliability of constitution without Law and order,Judiciary and VALIDITY OF TRADE TRADE DEALS WHICH ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL. ALSO EDUCATE THEM HOW GOVT. BRIBE VARIOUS ORGANISATION HEADS WITH OFFRING DUTY FREE CARS AND CONTRACTS TO ATTRACT THEM TO GOVT.

3)Educate SL expriate community to press those governments to sever Business, Trade and Loan sanctions against SL Govt due to unavailibility of constitution, trade laws and judiciary in Sri Lanka.

4)Joint opposition, trade unions, Bar Association and local communities to organise constant agitations, Strikes, work stoppage and demonstrations against Govt, until give justice to CJ.

5)Make arrangements for CJ to go to UN, EU, USA and other Asian countries to express her views on SL Government, and to hear her case by judges in those countries.

First, the High Court of Colombo was shot dead by Pottu Nauffer, a hardcore drug king and criminal who had close connections with a Muslim Minister and some higher-ups. Thereafter, the Mannar Magistrate was threatened by Rishard Badurdeen. Then another Judicial Officer of the JSA was attacked. Later an impeachment motion against the CJ was presented and declared null and void by the Court of Appeal which also read the verdict of the Supreme Court. Finally two judges (Tamil and Sinhalese) were given a threatened calls while no threatening calls were give to the Muslim Judge. Now which judge or judges will be targeted. This is all happening in a Dharmista society and the funniest part is happening in a country where the President wanted Mahinda Chinatana in keeping with the Buddhist teachings. He also visited Thiruppathy. One ponders whether MR is cheating God and following the path shown by Gadaffi of Libya and Mubarak of Egypt and now encouraged by the Iranian leader. By the way, is Mervyn a Buddhist or an atheist?

Of course no conversation is complete without dragging Muslims and bashing them. The goons are white washed. Ministers with criminal records are conveniently ignored. Muslims are the villains, the goons are of course, people observing “Pan Sil” and true Sinhala Buddhists.

And readers have to suffer Ostriches like citizen. My foot!

No other country in the world would tolerate a character like Mervyn in the service of people in their supreme legislatures.Look at his deeds over the last few years as a politician which were so sordidly idiotic ,ludicrous, abrasive and thuggish in public and even provoked the angst of the employees of the state run Rupavahini corporation where he was greeted with urine and feces for his unbearable uncouth ways.He is behind almost every government show of strength with his goons to oppose any democratic movement for justice, freedom and democracy organized by the opposition. He is now being suspected as the main figure behind for the murder of his own party man though opposed to him in Kelaniya. His sibling too emulates him and were smart and powerful enough to twist the law to disgrace a combat warrior and a true patriot. But is he really the culprit? or is it the powers that be who defend him and sustain him despite the disgrace he brings to his party, colleagues in the government and the country at large ?.

The Brave die once, the coward dies many times. Kudos to all those who braved the goons.

I have protested silently in my own way. I boycott all events where politicians gather, if I happen to be among them, I walk away, I have de-tuned all government electronic media and the government newspapers.

None of these can function without patronage of advertisers. Advertisers will abandon these media organs if patronage declines.
