Sri Lankan born Tamil poet and Norwegian citizen Shanmugampillai Jayapalan who was arrested by the Terrorist Investigative Division on Friday, will be deported by Sri Lankan immigration, the Government Information Department says.

Jayapalan was arrested in the Northern Province three days ago, while on a visit to his mother’s gravesite. Sri Lankan Police claim he was arrested for propagating extremist views and organising political seminars in violation of his tourist visa.
The authorities have accused the Tamil poet of inciting communal tensions in the former conflict zone. Activists are agitating for his release and their calls have been echoed by former Norwegian Peace Envoy to Sri Lanka Eric Solheim. Jayapalan was visiting Jaffna for the first time in seven years. Since he was unable to attend his mother’s funeral in November 2006 while the conflict was raging, Jayapalan is reported to have visited her gravesite near his ancestral home in Mankulam.

Sura 52:17-20, 22 says: “Eat and drink with happiness because of what you used to do. They will recline (with ease) on thrones arranged in ranks. And we shall marry them to Hur (fair females) with wide lovely eyes. And we shall provide them with fruit and meat much as they desire.”
Sura 52:24 says; There will circulate among them boys for them, as if they were pearls well-protected.

There are all sorts of tamil poets. I remember Kasi Aanathan’s poetry, and its unfolding is what led to the “deportation” that let to many people going abroad to escape state terror AND, even more poignantly, LTTE terror. Some who went only to India did not escape the LTTE. Some went to Colombo suburbs and settled down, adding to the new Tamil demographics of Colombo. Others went to Colombo merely on transit, and from there went to Norway, Europe, but the preferred destination was, and is Canada!

The days that I went to study in the UK, we didn’t have to beg for anything. Only, we were treated second class. They just stamped ‘entered’ in my passport. There was no visa to extend. After five years or so, I just filled, I think a five line questioner and they just gave me a British Passport. I keep it for I can travel without hazel. That’s all. I am very content and live here happily.
