Targeting CBK And Hirunika; Remove Armed Security From All Politicians: USP Presidential Candidate

USP Presidential Candidate has urged the Elections Commissioner to immediately take steps to effectively disarm all security personnel provided to all parliamentarians and prohibit private security escorts for all politicians.

Issuing a statement USP Presidential Candidate Siritunga Jayasuriya says; “This is an election to elect a candidate of people’s choice and that needs no arms and goons.”

“There is also no necessity in parliamentarians and politicians being accompanied by armed security guards during election campaigns. Some in the government are even accused of having their own private security men carrying arms. This armed security has to be completely withdrawn to ensure a free and fair election.” he further said.

We publish below the statement in full;

Increasing election violence: Remove Armed Security from All Politicians

The latest incident of violence in Beruwala on 26 December night where former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Western Provincial Councillor Ms. Premachandra was targeted, shows this Rajapaksa regime is on a violent march to undermine opposition election campaigning.

My campaign rally in Pottuvil on 21st December, was attacked by goons led by a government party Urban Council Member Majeed. Many other goon attacks and firing at Opposition rallies were also reported.

Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) reports this latest attack in Beruwala occurred around 10.00 pm when former President Kumaratunga and Ms. Premachandra visited Western Provincial Councillor Mohamed Jemine Marikkar Mohamed’s house for dinner after a public rally in Beruwala. CMEV also says, the police and the STF on duty had run for cover when the goons started attacking. Damage due to goon attacks includes property and former President Kumaratunga’s vehicle. Opposition Urban Council member Mohamed Mansoor Dalhan who was reportedly injured in the attack and taken to Beruwala base hospital had been refused admission by hospital authorities says the CMEV report. The OPD medical doctor is quoted in the report as saying the police had instructed her not to admit any casualties to the hospital.

Election monitoring organisations say over 300 cases of actual violations of law have been reported thus far. In most cases, fire arms and armed goons have been involved. This violent trend is now on the rise, with more defections from the Rajapaksa camp cementing the defeat of President Rajapaksa and his campaign leaders trying to stem the tide with violence. President Rajapaksa cannot say he does not know his campaign is being turned into a Wayamba type violent election carnival.

I as the USP presidential candidate at this election, appeal to the people to organise themselves into vigilante election committees to safeguard their polling booths and resist all efforts to deny the people their right to a free and fair election.

There is also no necessity in parliamentarians and politicians being accompanied by armed security guards during election campaigns. Some in the government are even accused of having their own private security men carrying arms. This armed security has to be completely withdrawn to ensure a free and fair election. I therefore appeal to the Elections Commissioner to immediately take steps to effectively disarm all security personnel provided to all parliamentarians and prohibit private security escorts for all politicians.

This is an election to elect a candidate of people’s choice and that needs no arms and goons.

The joint opposition should focus on WOMEN VOTERS and mobilize women to vote AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN.

The Mahinda Jarapassa regime has a long track record of Violence against Women and Joint opposition must target women voters for their votes and EDUCATE WOMEN VOTERS to vote as Women.

Women’s NGOS should also EDUCATE Women voters to vote for CHANGE and a peaceful political culture where women are treated with respect.

It is sad that the issues of intimidation and violence against women in the political space has not become a cause to mobilize and PROTEST against he Brutish and male Chauvinist Jarapassa regime.

Yes, but that is they have, and not the people. So let the people know that Medamulkana MaRa has arms and goons and the common Opposition has the People and the votes to remove MaRa aka Mara.

Keep exposing, exposing. and ex-posing… The Medamulana MaRa thinks this is their Kingdom, and not the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka..

It is a very uneven way to permit the candidate for the presidency, still comtinuing with all the powers
Of a ruling president. This syst em must be changed to a caretaker government/president during the time of the election.

The USP candidate is correct in taking the position that contestants at elections should NOT make use of state security personnel or state resources, because it is common to all citizens and those contesting elections should not utilize the tax paid by the ordinary tax paying constituency.

The necessity for such a law is based of the assumption that those who come forward to contest elections do so with an altruistic purpose in mind and with a principled intention of improving the conditions of life and welfare of the community at large they seek to represent.

As such, this principle should be included as an entrenched clause in the election laws and the constitution if DEMOCRACY in the true sense of that word is to be meaningful in a country like SL.

It is then, any ugly incidents such as the one which happened at recently at Beruwala can be avoided.

    Will the CC take note?

I am not sure why SL goverment needs to provide any security protection for “vagabonds and prostitutes” in this land? Our security forces have better duties than protecting “Mada Puwak Holes”

Regarding your comments of her bonding to MarA’s family – what adhestive liquid this Horanika used to not to get separated from Narmal’s golden rod? Did you see her Nude photos on the web? Her pratcie of free democracy is in full display on those photos. These are the people wants to rule this golden land.
