Teldeniya is in shock after a man succumbed to injuries sustained after being attacked by a group of men. The identities of the victim and his assailants have raised questions whether it was a racially motivated attack, but this has not been established, Colombo Telegraph learns.
Kumarasiri, a Sinhala resident of Ambala, Teldeniya, is alleged to have been accosted by a group of Muslim men who had followed his vehicle to Teldiniya from Kumbukkandura and then assaulted a few days ago. Allegedly, Kumarasiri had angered the group by not allowing them to overtake his vehicle.
The man was admitted to hospital and later transferred to the Kandy hospital where he succumbed to his injuries last night.
Four suspected assailants have been arrested.
It is reported that white flags have been put up all over Teldeniya town and that shops are to be closed as a mark of respect or protest.
It is not possible to ascertain whether the ethnic identity of either victim or assailants had anything to do with the murder.

I don’t agree with comments suggesting that CT reporting here was inappropriate. On the contrary the CT report had taken care to state that there is no evidence to suggest racial motives to the incident. If the converse occurred ie if the victim was Muslim these same voices would have praised CT for brave reporting! That is the majoritarian dilemma in the country.
The perpetrators of this ghastly incident should be dealt with firmly. Obviously road rage. But road rage should not end in murder. It rarely does so, but the law should deal with the perpetrators as forcefully as the law permits.

SL as a nation has taken one-foot forward and fifteen hundred feet back. Never did I as a child( born in the early 1980s) living through the civil war ever envisage the future of Sri Lanka in 2018 to be this downtrodden and deplorable. Extremely disappointing. Who would have though as a nation we would go down this path instigating racial disharmony. There was a time, where I associate those who instigate communal disharmony with a small percentage of illiterate and uneducated in our society (with the exception being a few elite politicians). However, I suppose I would need to concede, seems like the more educated we’ve become the less tolerant and less understanding we have become of each other. We certainly are not a nation of people who will ever learn from our past, instead continue to make the same mistakes over and over again . And, thereafter wonder why we are in the same position 70yrs post independence. It’s time to accept reality for what it is. Unfortunately Sri Lanka is a failed state. Perhaps, it’s time to start at the very bottom and rebuild our social fabric instead of living a false dream thinking that we are tolerant and a sophisticated lot! Road rage is a normal thing in Sri Lanka. Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims all engage in the violent behaviour when it comes to driving. It has nothing to do with race. I remember that once our vehicle was followed by drunken men in another vehicle because we overtook them. They were Sinhalese. At one point they blocked the road and stopped our vehicle. Luckily they let us go.
