That Man Ranil

By Rajitha Bandara Gunawardena

It is now the fashion and trend when one finishes cursing the Rajapaksas’ to turn on the leader of the opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe. He is useless they say, ineffectual, has overstayed his welcome, has doubtful sexual preferences, has no children, takes advice only from his friends, you name it Ranil is it.

Has anyone stopped to think of the alternative? Let’s assume the mantle was given to Karu Jayasuriya. He has gone over to the opposition held office as a minister proved more that ineffectual in the role and hasn’t had even the self-respect to go into oblivion when virtually chased out by the President. He has crawled back to his beginnings and resumed innocuous office as something or the other in the opposition. He was also taken back by this much maligned leader of the opposition.

So look closely at yourselves people of Sri Lanka. Blame yourselves just as much as you blame the leader of the opposition!

Sajith Premadasa has the following of the masses they say. He is relatively young and has his father’s charisma say others, with a faint air of desperation. The reality is that he has too many skeletons in his cupboard for his escapades in Yala during the regime of his father and his penchants for thuggery are still not forgotten by those who know.

Sajith Premadasa to gether with the Dayasiri Jayasekeras’ and all others of his ilk would have if given the mantle turned the UNP into a bunch of thugs. Trying to beat the masters of thuggery at their own game would have been just what the Rajapaksas’ wanted!

Don’t you critics’ understand? The single reason why the UNP hasn’t deteriorated further (I do admit to deterioration) and gone down to a level that would have been unrecognizable to those firmly committed to, it is Ranil Wickremesinghe.

All allegations of homosexuality and the daily insults heaped on him by the TV station run by the Maharaja organization have had no effect. The man doesn’t have to do this! He is wealthy in his own right and to insinuate that he is holding this post just to travel “first class around the world” is nothing but balderdash concocted by those who have desires and standards of this nature. Ranil Wickremesinghe has enough private wealth to travel many times around the world in style without having to undergo all these daily insults and allegations.

Look carefully. He has said no to those with doubtful credentials. He has allowed others up to the maximum level that is suitable to them and stopped them there, before the Peter Principle kicked in. No one has been able to buy him or blackmail him into submission, or to change his mind.

The opposition of this Country led by Ranil Wickremesinghe has been steadily and methodically exposing the shenanigans of the Rajapaka regime to the outside world. Think again people, is there anything else they could have done? What is the use of preaching to the converted in the drawing rooms of Colombo 7? They constitute too small a majority to make any change in an election. Furthermore they are too firmly ensconced in their comfort zones to do anything but pass a pseudo intellectual comment or two while sipping their single malt whiskeys!

The Majority of the Country has been totally brain washed by the war victory and the so-called supremacy of a lazy bunch of cultivators over the hard working industrious but mislead Tamils of the North. The Tamils made a mistake by thinking that terrorism would give them a shortcut to power. There are no shortcuts to power and route they were following before Prabhakaran came on the scene hard work, accumulation of wealth and the top positions in companies of the day would have given them what they wanted and more. They were but a short distance away from gaining economic dominance of the Sinhala people when the shortcut beckoned!

The abovementioned work ethic of the Sinhala race has found ideal release in the newly formed strata of society….the three-wheel driver. This specimen finds some money most often his mothers provident fund or a nest egg carefully saved over the years by that very prudent financial manager (the Sri Lankan Housewife) and makes a down payment on one of those infernal machines introduced to this country by a person whom I considered a motor enthusiast! Have you ever wondered why many three wheelers have slogans such as “Amma Buduwewa!” on the rear?  The reason being the aforesaid contribution provided by the mother to her beloved male child!

I digress but only to try and establish my point, that it is a waste of time trying to convince the majority of the voters in this Country to worry about economic well being or good governance. The mistake of acknowledging a high level of literacy (the mere ability to read) for intellectuality or even the ability to think and reason, has been the main reason.

The mediocre education curriculum probably introduced by the colonial rulers who just wanted clerks or “followers of orders” from the local populace has produced a majority that is only worried about keeping his neighbor down and doing better that him and expecting all free handouts and economic largesse from the Government. What they have forgotten is that the Government is no longer colonial and with all their faults at least the Colonial rulers had respect for the rule of law and took some responsibility for the well being of the people.

Since the Colombo 7 people don’t care and the majority is too busy pursuing their own narrow minded and artificial standards, I repeat what is the use of trying to stir any action from them?

The only hope is to expose these thugs for what they are to the International community and hope that after the international community finishes in dealing with those who provide fossil fuels to them, that they will turn their eyes towards the blatant misrule and open robbery that is being conducted under the guise of a democratic system of governance.

Meanwhile it is essential to maintain the main opposition party the UNP, as a party that people with honor and dignity, respect for the law and decent moral standards will vote for, when the opportunity arises.

In my view the current leader of the opposition has done this job admirably, in the current circumstances.

Before the insults fly let me assure the protagonists’ that I have last been face to face with Ranil Wickremesinghe around 10 years ago, I have received absolutely no payment for this piece but I am related to him as most of us are in this small Island community.

So look closely at yourselves people of Sri Lanka. Blame yourselves just as much as you blame the leader of the opposition!

Well said Rajitha Bandara Gunawardena. Ranil is our only hope for a better Sri Lanka. A leader who has “real” spine to stand against any mud thrown at him, ignore the thrower and continue moving in the correct direction.

Sri Lankans have become lame, irrational and naive. They have started hero worshiping actors, singers, thugs, criminals etc. In such a society decent, policy-bound, principled politicos like Ranil Wickremesinghe will be frowned upon. Fortunately there seems to be an erudite corner which understands the truth and supports Ranil.

Mark my words. “Ranil is the ONLY hope Sri Lanka has, as for now”.

Dayasiri has gone ,wait until all the party members join the Government then you can have only hope on Ranil W as your leader because no one is there other than him

Is this letter published to cover up RW dictatorship with in the party or to cover up the shame from Dayasiri incident

The Majority of the Country has been totally brain washed by the war victory and the so-called supremacy of a lazy bunch of cultivators over the hard working industrious but mislead Tamils of the North.

Ha ha ha if Ranil was in power then we have only half of the SL now

      Don’t talk bulshit

U R 100% correct, Had R.W been in power, by now SL would have been not HALF OF WHAT IT WAS,BUT 1/3 OF WHAT IT WAS!!!

          0

yep at least 1/3 would be there but now the entire country is sold for scrap. You guys are really sick to praise this despot Jarapaksas. they are a family of vampires, you fools cant see it because you all are blind deaf and dumb.

This is a bunch of tosh, hog wash and balderdash!
Dayasisi has now lost the plot and sold out, but it is hard to believe that there is no one in the UNP but Ranil to lead the party as this guy suggests. Ranil is devious and cruel and has destroyed younger people in order to cling to power. There is for instance Rosy Senanayaka a very capable and charismatic woman and Sujeeva Senasinghe who with the right mentors and support from the leader would have shone and been a straight winner for the UNP.
The fact is that Ranil the shameless DICTATOR of the UNP has lost too many elections to count and should have groomed someone like Dayasiri to succeed him.
Sajith and Karu are of course useless, but there are other bright young men with ethics who could have succeeded if the leaders had done what he should have and MENTORED those with ETHICS and COURAGE.

One final word on the [Edited out] wife of Ranil who claims to be a feminist and should know that the Public is Private too and should get of the gravy train and take a stand and ask her hubby who is a DICTATOR and ruining not just the UNP but the country to hand over to some one like Sujeeva Senansinghe or anyone and resign.

Quite right Komi – I’d vote for Rosy any day and so would Sri Lanka, but never for Ranil the shameless dictator! And yes agreed about the Wife Maitree – true strike-busting hypocrite she is.

Also the JVP today is more of an opposition party than the UNP under Ranil. UNP does not sustains a single campaign against the regime’s corruption and crime – whether against impeachment of CJ, Hambantota port and airport losses, or corruption or anything..

Neither has the UNP been able to educate voters on the real issues because Ranil the so-called leader (my ASS) is busy fighting with his colleagues and suppressing the best and the brightest.

“UNP does not sustains a single campaign against the regime’s corruption and crime – whether against impeachment of CJ, Hambantota port and airport losses, or corruption or anything”. Quite right. Ranil’s only philosophy, everything for himself. This had been the motto not only of Ranil, but of all the others in politics since 1977, when we the fools voted in a criminal

        Komi:
Your (very) tired rhetoric is typical of those who are looking for easy solutions to the Rajapassa Dictatorship but totally unprepared to use the grey matter that (at least some of them) were born with.
Yours is crap parading as “analysis and comment” and doesn’t do anything to advance the discussion about replacing a dictatorship except trot out simplistic nonsense, throwing a bunch of names around.
Many of us certainly don’t think RW is anything close to being “the second coming,” but let’s not waste time with all kinds of “pie-in-the-sky” arguments!
Incidentally, while you are on about RW’s wife and her personal life, you might check out Rosy and Dayasiri, while you are about it, don’t you think? After all, isn’t what is sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander as well?

Why is the spineless and DISHONEST RADICAL FEMINIST “WIFE” Maitree Wickramasinghe holding up the fig leaf for the shameless, corrupt and morally bankrupt loser, Ranil Wickramasinghe, rather than telling him to DO THE RIGHT THING and hand over the UNP to Rosy Senanayake and other capable and honest women for a change?

      Maitree Wickramasinghe is the pits!

WHY DO THE RANIL BASHERS DRAG MAITHREE INTO THIS. THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE PERVERTED MINDSETS. RANIL MAY NOT BE THE BEST PERSON TO LEAD THE UNP BUT GIVEN THE CHOICE, WILL THE UNP THRIVE WITH MAHINDA AT ITS HELM ? THE UNP WILL THEN BE ENGULFED BY THUGS, DRUG DEALERS, RAPISTS,UNDERWORLD KING PINS AND CASINO MOGHULS IF THAT HAPPENS. SO THE UNP IS BETTER OFF WITH A PERSONALITY LIKE RANIL RIGHT NOW. THE ELECTIONS CANNOT BE WON BECAUSE MR THE BEHEMOTH HAS USURPED ALL THE WEALTH & RESOURCES OF THE COUNTRY AND USES THEM TO HIS ADVANTAGE AND THE GREEDY UNP WEAKLINGS CAN BE BOUGHT OVER LIKE AC / DC DAYASIRI !

It is a foregone conclusion that Ranil has miserably failed to revive the UNP and the party will certainly go to wrack and ruin under his leadership. Do you think that the share holders of a company would tolerate a Managing Director if the company continues to incur losses year after year in an unending bad patch? The Managing Director should go or the company should fold up!

THIS IS NOT A GOOD COMPARISON. IF SOME OF THE OTHER DIRECTORS AND PART OF THE EMPLOYEES WORK AGAINST THE MD AND THEREBY AGAINST THE COMPANY, SURREPTITIOUSLY ACTING IN THE INTERESTS OF THE RIVALS AND ALSO UNDERMINES HIM AT EVERY TURN WHILST THE MD HAS TO FACE SINISTER AND UNETHICAL PRACTICES BY THE COMPETITORS, WHAT CAN HE DO AND IS HE THE ONLY PERSON TO TAKE THE RAP FOR FAILURES ?

Whilst Ranil Wickremesinghe’s is being literally
undressed in Parliament, it seems bizarre that
CT should make the unusual attempt to salvage
whatever is left or not left of him. There will be
many others who will try. Of course that would be
    a continuing saga.

For apologists like Ranjitha Bandara Gunawardena (I
am not sure whether such a name exists), ground
realities matter little. I agree that both Karu Jayasuriya
(on the verge of 70 years) is only a publicity crazy, self
indulgent politician. He is respected by the monks but
they are not followers. Since he stabbed RW in the back,
no one really cares for him.

As for Sajith, Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage
said a mouthful in Parliament when Dayasiri Jayasekera crossed
over. He said all the leadership problems were the result of
Sajith. After he won the deputy leader’s post, he did not
care for his cronies. That had to be expected. Sajith tries
to bask in his late father’s glory but has little or no
political strategy. He came in greater public focus only
because more and more began to dislike RW. When the ledership
crisis was reaching its peak, so was Sajith’s popularity. He
could offer sweet little to cash in on that. No one can be
blamed for that. It is a manufacturing defect.

True, there is no one to replace RW. But look at RW himself.
Why did he not have the May Day rally in Colombo. He knew he
could not muster crowds. He had a meeting at Sri Kotha in the
morning on May Day to scuttle the R. Premadasa commemoration
ceremonies. Then he jumped to Kurunegala for an event attended
    by less than 2,000.

How many opportunities has the UNP lost? What about the impeachment
of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranaike? What about the rise in
electricity rates? RW was in Jaffna having a holiday at that time
    when consumers were protesting.

Here is a man who has been ignoring national causes one after the
other. Why? Only because he is not capable. He has mixed his private
sex life with politics. See the likes of Sagala Ratnayake whom he
appointed as International Affairs Advisor. What qualification does
he have for the post? He was rejected by the people of Matara. What
about Akila Viraj Kariyawasam? What is his closeness to RW.

I know there will be many who will scream at this. But instead of
RW, it will be a world better if MR continues. Not because he is
excellent. But because RW is a dead weakling interested only in
going abroad and enjoying life at taxpayer’s expense. When power
rates were increased, he was in Laos. Find out who paid for this?
Find out where the five million rupees Milinda Moragoda obtained
from a foreign source and gave the UNP leadership during the last
parliamentary elections. Mr. Clean? My damn foot. High time people
who do not know the facts find out. Or is it just a case of the
handful at the Opposition Leader’s office who are tasked to respond
with favorable replies at work. I am sure they are. Good try but
    people will not get fooled.

You will know when the three provincial elections, particularly
NWP and CP are held. But RW will hang on. He may be from a rich
family but he will not give up!! No question about it.

      Koththu Rotten:
Is this an effort to impress us with your knowledge of English?
You start “Whilst Ranil Wickremesinghe’s is being literally
undressed in Parliament.” “Literally?” Come on, man, you don’t even know how to use basic English terminology. “Literally,” and you expect us to believe anything the likes of you have to say after that display of ignorance in an effort to impress?
The biggest problem the UNP faces is the Idiots’ Brigade who go around parroting “Ranil is a failure, Ranil is a failure!” while not displaying a few grains of intelligence that may produce a, perhaps, desperately required alternative. Who wants enemies with friends like you and the rest of the demalichchas who seem to inhabit these pages!

What about RW giving a tax amnesty to Tax evaders in SL . This cost the country billions in revenue. This is RW “scratch my back I scratch your back “attitude. what about the many times he has let down the country on international forums .Where were you when RW wanted to celebrate a Portugese invasion to SL?? Where were you when X/mas was celebrated for three months in a Buddhist country ?Where were you when Ranil campaigned against the GSP to SL ? Where were you then Bandara .wake up from your dream. Get real. Is this the type of leader you so admire ?

Why not celebrate a Portuguese day when more than half the population of Sri lanka has Portuguese names and good many their blood. Possibly this Sarojini as well.

      • 0
        0

        Sarojini:
When you say, “What about RW giving a tax amnesty to Tax evaders in SL . This cost the country billions in revenue,” it raises the issue of the Rajapassa’s acolytes (yourself included?) who don’t need amnesties because your Lokka permits his friends and, particularly, his relations to rob the country blind. They don’t need amnesties they need to be lined up on Galle Face and shot for what they are doing to this country.
Incidentally, have you ever heard of “Helping Hambantota?” If you have, perhaps, you’d like to comment on the honesty of that “helper.”

Whether it is Karu or Sajith lead the opposition MR will buy the opposition MPs to UPFA.

The problem is not in opposition but in the executive powers of president, 18th amendment.

Even if someone does go in and get rid of the exec powers, then what? Maybe some of the more blatant stealing and corruption will stop, but do you think MPs who’ve got used to nearly 30 years of a screwed up political culture are simply going to allow a total crackdown?

Also, once the exec powers are gone, what happens to the national problem? The ethnic issue started way back in the 50s, way before we had the god-like presidency. And no amount of cleaning up of Parliament is going to mean anything for the country if it still remains divided.

Is the actial team around Ranil that bad? Eran Wickramaratne, Harsha De Silva etc. are also part of his circle and seem very competent people. Certainly vastly superior to the government equivalents. Even Mangala when it comes to schmoozing with the international community is a useful asset. Also, none of these UNP dissenters seem to be able to attract the likes of them to their cause. You can’t say he doesn’t promote non posh types also. He seems willing to give the likes of Rajan Ramanayake a prominent role in certain areas. I think the writer is correct when he says “He has allowed others up to the maximum level that is suitable to them and stopped them there” This may be the problem. What is Dayasiri actually good at? Gettign the job done at a regional level, yes? A cabinet and policy maker? Probably not.

  • 0

The simple truth as I see it is that there is no credible leader in the opposition ranks that can unify the opposition and the disgruntled UPFA and SLFPers and take on the Brothers who have consolidated power like no other.

Maybe Chandrika is our only hope.

    • 0
      0

Chandrika has categorically stated recently that she will only contest through the SLFP.She seems to have been disturbed by the fact that her name was being bandied about by the Ranil mob to run against mahinda at the next presidential election.Ranil’s master plan of spitting the SLFP is not going to work and chandrika as the next opposition presidential candidate has been put to rest once and for all by her.

Anyway can you tell me a worthwhile achievements by Chandrika during her 12 year tenure? It is time to give new leaders a chance after the old ones have shown that they are not capable. Are we so politically bankrupt that we have to use the same old shoes over and over again.

      • 0

Shankar, if this recent Dayasiri drama is any indication, CBK can just as easily contest through the UNP or such if she wants to. After all, in Dayasiri we had a man so vehemently against the crimes and injustices of the regime who’s now seemingly got Duminda Silva syndrome!

Secondly, let me point out that you haven’t actually said who these ‘new leaders’ are. And im not trying to defend CBK and her horrendous method of governance, but at least we should admit it wasnt as bad as what we have now.

I think you should be blind if you could not see it.

CBK ´s terms have paved the way MR to win the war easily. Winning the war – was a colletive task. Whoever took the credit of it. Facts that SF sacrificed his life is known to almost everyone, but is now being isolated by brutal Rajapskshes, I dont think that people of this would easily forget all the truth.

Today people feel that MR´s rule does so much of things to the nation, but road constructions, buildingsa and other infra structure projects are common scences even far poor countries in Africa today. These projects are common to any developing country today across the globe. Sadly, lanken folks are easily being misguided but not providing them with facts: so the naive masses do believe Rajapakshes.

“CBK ´s terms have paved the way MR to win the war easily.”

Siri, can you till us what she did please specifically.Anyway i don’t think the war was won easily as you claim. It was tough and could have swung either way and it was not MR who won the war,but a collective effort under his supervision.CBK had two terms to win the war,but MR did did it in one.CBK certainly did not do anything detrimental to the war effort or even the country as a whole, however there doesn’t seem to be much achievements too.She was certainly much better than her parents and redeemed the bandarnayaka name, but did not have that bit of extra to produce that results.I think that she could not focus on any single thing at a time and everything was half done.

“Today people feel that MR´s rule does so much of things to the nation, but road constructions, buildingsa and other infra structure projects are common scences”

If that is so why was these development not done by CBK and even others before her.See for example the rotten power shortage situation. At least MR expedited some of the projects though still he trusted guys like champika ranawake too much, who were really sabotaging the projects especially sampur. If at all MR falls and falls badly it will be because of the company He keeps and trusts.Guys like champika, modawansa, bodu balu sena etc are just piggy back riding on top of him and think that when he gets finshed they will be strong enough to take over the country.

“so the naive masses do believe Rajapakshes.”

I don’t think the people are that naive, but they are scratching their heads thinking what is the alternative. What about Wignesvaran as the next president? The Obama of Srilanka.

“CBK ´s terms have paved the way MR to win the war easily.”

siri,i can only think of one thing that may have helped MR a lot and that was due to Laksman kadirgamar. When he took over the foreign service he remodelled it into a merit based one,so much so that we became overnight the apple of the eye of many parts of the world, and the crude LTTE that did not have the same quality of people to counter this new look foreign service, became stigmatised into being recognised by everyone as a terrorist organisation and became proscribed all over the world including countries that had been hitherto friendly and supportive towards them. Now of course the foreign service has descended back to square one to the same levels before kadir took over and the GOSL is losing international support more and more each year because the merit based system has been ditched.

Other than that i cannot think of anything that CBK’s tenure would have helped MR in winning the war during his term.MR’s personal contribution was very light indeed. He was very lucky that he had a brother who had first hand experience in the military and knew all the weak points in it.It was gota who had Fonseka appointed as army commander because he knew that he was the best man for the job.CBK rejected him.MR too was all the time nervous of him and trying to get rid of him,but Gota persuaded MR to continue to keep hima s the army commander.

Fonseka in turn appointed commanders based on merit and not seniority. So the chain reaction went on like this with efficiecy flowing down and that was how the war was won,not because of MR but inspite of him.As soon as the war was over MR quickly went all out to get rid of fonseka, and again Gota had to clean the mess by purging the army of officers close to fonseka, and jailing him.MR created an unnecessary political opponent and deadly enemy, which he is bound to rue one day because though fonseka’s who rose up the ranks with 40 years of experience is somewhat offset by gota’s 20 years of same,it is not enough and the army is bound to have those loyal to fonseka.

I, for one do not support Dayasiri’s decision. Chaminda (pronounced, Cha Mahinda) Pusswedilla, referred to his ilk as,”Defecators”, a term fitting of people like Dayasiri.

Where Ranil is concerned, here’s the case scenario; Assume Sri Lanka is going in for a Presidential Election, and the only Presidential candidates are Ranil and Mervyn Silva. Knowing the Sri Lankan mentallity, who do you think will win?…… I place all my bets on Mervyn. This is how much of faith I have in Ranil. He is the leader of the Opposition & needs to be more pro active. In reality, he is Impotent. (I mean, politically)

Once upon a time there was a wise man named Mahadanamuththa. He had a Book of Knowledge. He had five very obedient disciples. One day they went on a journey. Accidentally Mahadanamuthatha fell into a ditch. Disciples gathered around and were looking at him without helping him to come out.

Mahadanamoththa : Why do you simply look at me. Take me out.
Golayo : We dont have the book.
Mahadanamuttha checked his sack for the book. Unfortunately it was not there.
    Mahadanamoththa; Where is the book?
Golayo : It fell on the way.
Mahadanamuththa : Why didn’t you collect it ?
Golayao ; It is not said in the book.
Mahadanamuththa advised : Go back and bring the book.
Golayo : We don’t have the book to know whether it says.
Mahadana: Go. Go. I will write it.
Disciples went back looking for the book and found it. Mahadanamuththa is still in the ditch. They checked the book again.
Golayo: There is no such advise.
Mahadanamuththa took the book and wrote “If Mahadanamuththa falls into a ditch help him to come out”
Disciples read the book and helped him to come out. Later he wrote
“If the book is falls from the sack, fetch it and give back to me”

RW is a strict disciplinarian and all members have to follow his book. No one can get him out of the ditch unless Ranil writes the instructions himself. Ranil still does not feel he has fallen into a ditch.

You mean Ranil can win elections????

The 2005 Presidential election was the one that Ranil should have won and the fact that he lost points to the fact that he is a born looser.

UNP needs to groom a new leader.

” the fact that he lost points to the fact that he is a born looser.”

…or that Prabhakaran simply stopped the NE from voting.

not trying to defend RW, but man, before you make conclusions, make sure your memory works.

MR had the strategy to get VP to ban voting in the North in 2005. RW ignored this possibility and hence lost the election. just shows who the master brain is.

The only way to defeat this government lies in canvassing a mandate from the voters to form a Provisional Government representing all the political parties for a period of one year. By a new constitution adopted by the Provisional Government within that year the following have to be implemented.1 Abolition of Executive presidency 2 Elections to parliament and provincial councils under PR and first past the post elections 3 Implementation of the 13th amendment fully.4 Employments and promotions only through exams qualifications and experience.Essential consumer items at a lower price. At the end of the one year new elections must be held in order to elect a new government.

      Punchisingho”
Thank you for one of the few sensible contributions to this discussion. Yours stands out so much more because of the rubbish that the Ranil-trashers indulge in without any REAL suggestion of an alternative!

Allow the UNP rank and file to have a say on who should be their leader.Have an election and see that UNP members will be allowed at least half the vote.Is that an unreasonable request? Is this ranil’s family party to have some handpicked working commitee members to decide on the leader.Do the rest of the UNP rank and file not count at all?

Then no need of all this talk whether karu or sajith or ranil are suitable. The UNP will become a truly democratic party that elects their leaders through a bottom up process instead like now in a top down fashion of a family party owned by a few people only.If you want to win elections in a democracy, democratize your own party first.

Who knows this method of electing the leader may throw out someone other than the three mentioned as a future potential leader. Now there is no chance at all of fresh new talent taking over. Also the process i mentioned will keep any leader elected on his toes to deliver.

  • 0
    0

If you can’t think of a viable alternative, that’s not by chance, it’s by design: Ranil’s design.

Democratise the UNP leadership selection process and let candidates campaign within the party for the post. That’s the solution, and it’s simple.

This wringing of limp-wristed hands and crying about there being no alternative is exactly what this dictator (and I’m referring to Ranil here) wants!

what were Sajiths escapades in Yala that the writer talks about anyone care to reveal them or are is it just mud slinging?

    • 0

Sajith should reveal who stole the precious work of ART at presidents house and has the guy got children !!!

  • 0

It is the lack of integrity that is at the heart of the problem. After all Prabarkaran decided the 2005 election for a colossal sum, and effectively elected MR, and the rest as they say is history. Whoever alternative to RW would have fared worse in every election the UNP lost since that time.

At a time when the people should gather round the opposition, and support its leader against real fight he has on his hands against injustice and misrule, where RW has pointed out all the mistakes of this government but has not been ably supported by the press or even some of his cronies, what is he to do?

It is easy to criticize his being ineffectual, but then it is incumbent upon people of character and ability to join the UNP and help develop a force which is diametrically opposite to the ruinous regime of present.

The alternatives all aspiring to leadership including the double crosser Dayasiri are NOT leadership potential as their integrity and motives are suspect.Until someone comes to the fore who can match Ranil for integrity, but with an added skill in handling the media (Ranil’s only fault in not playing heed to the importance of media in today’s politics) the UNP will just have to wait.

So one of you who really cares to see this country take its place amongst the best in the world, stop criticising and throw your hat into the ring for the sake of the country and stop blaming others because you are too smug!!

You will be surprised how receptive Ranil would be for someone more capable than him, and you “know it alls” will stumped for words!!!

To beat MR you have to be streets better than him, NOT like him which people are trying so hard to be. Look into MR’s past and you will see why once he has grabbed so much power to his person, he does not wish to let go. JR was never like that and he never thought we would elect someone of MR’s calibre.

We need a new constitution more attuned to the present, and until the thugs who rule over us are sent jail for their crimes, we will just have to wait a while for the voters to come to their senses.

The period of hallucination from the war victory is still not over and the press continues to hang on to it to the detriment of our future. If they wake up sooner then we will see a change for the better, with or without Ranil. Patience and suffering till then I am afraid!!!

Mara is only a cheap Bast….d. A Hambanthota Comedy show actor Tsunami Alibaba who robbed even robbed poor peoples Tsunami donations, and VP’s gold, jewlry and money. Even Museum swords were not spared by him.

See who are his companions are……Kangetta, KP, Karuna,Daya Master, julampitiya Amare, Mervin,Kudu Duminda, Thug DIG contract killer, Murderers, rapists,BBS,Rawaya, Rawana and all other most wanted criminals.

He is a Pariah in front of the Western world community, and who keep lying and deceiving them, and who does not keep his promises and who keep on duping and misleading them.

That’s why he cannot go anywhere outside without getting rotten tomatoe treat.

Let’s see when and how his drama going to end. Yes the Alibaba sold Sri Lanka to China for pennies.

Is not your so-called ‘the Western world community’ is a set of murderous who has been killing civilians for more than a decade in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the name of fighting terrorists.

Idiots like you may not accept there is peace in Sri Lanka. But the fact is, MR has ushers peace to Sri Lanka to the extent that CHOGM is scheduled to be held here. Otherwise, the foremost neo-colonealist country, the UK who baby fed terrorist LTTE earlier and since tries so hard to frame war crime charges on MR would not attend CHOGM and let MR be its chairmen for the next two years. Who is the clean man in politics? Isn’t it Jesus who asked the one has no sin to cast the first stone? Don’t be naive, all leaders have skeletons in their closets. I vote for the least con who I think would do the best. That is MR.

You should be an another idiot not to see the reality of the country. Do we have peace at all ? Are tamil people happy with the manner they have been treated since the war is no longer their in the nothern soils of the country ? Are the majority of the nation are happy withthe manner that MR regime handle law and order issues above most of all ?

Are the average man happy about the manner that MR has been creating a crime friendly society to this date ?

You and your ilk should be blind or fully ignorants not to grasp the least of the situation.

i dont know about this whitewashing of RW the author’s attempted, but i agree wholeheartedly with him about the rest of the article. People go on about “opposition should do something!”, but what exactly that is no one cares to say. When the village masses care not for the price of bread, but instead on keeping a “patriotic president” in power, as Dayan has said in his article today, what chance does a party like the UNP have? if the unp goes nationalist, then it stops being the UNP and becomes yet another pandering bunch of nationalists, leaving us with not a single party that wants a Sri Lankan Sri Lanka, as opposed to a Sinhala Buddhist Sri Lanka…

There is no internal democracy within all political parties in our country. This is common to SLFP and UNP.The constitutions of these parties give ultimate powers to the leader to take final decisions. The culture of over population is to remain on individuals to take over the power. When leaders become presidents of the country they use their executive poweres to keep so called party memebers as well as the masses under their mercy.

The 2nd or 3rd level members who contest elections at national and local level spend millions for their election victory with an expectation of making multipple profits from their election investments. They never get these dreams a reality if they remain with the losers. So they jump in to the circle of the winner. They claim that this is for the sake of the people and also put the whole blame on the lost leader to justify their actions.

Victory of the party cannot rely only on the leader. It must be shared responsibility of all membrs.Even if they lost confidence over their leaders how can they all of a sudden accept the opponent as their leader.Who gave authority to these people to jump from one party to another without caring the innocent voters who elected them to represent a perticular political party or ideology.

The clear message is that these politicians are really engaging in politics for their own sake mainly for financial benefits but falsly claim that their unilateral actions are for the benefit of the people. Ultimately they sell the feelings and aspirations of the people for their own conforts and profits etc.Dayasiri cannot be a exeptional case in this context. He very correctly stated that the MARAs regime will remain at least for another two decades by selling the war victory among majority sinhalese. So it would be the better place for all “young” politicians to chose considering their “bright” future. If by chance,if Ranil become President all memeber who left and join Mara will come back not only them but also the so called strong UPFA members and MPS,Monisters etc.by once again claiming that this was for the sake of people. Jayaweva! …………

well said rajitha i totally agree with you ranil is our only hope. he is the only decent honest leader we have and must be thankful for that.stop for one moment and think why does mahinda need jayasekara if he is so strong and so unbeatable. no he is now very weak and that too by his and his siblings doings.they have successfully made it very clear that the minorities are not wanted in this country so do you think that they will vote for the govt.the leaders of the minorities have failed them so miserably that no one can have any faith in them it is only the unp that has cared for them so far.this is where ranil comes in.the crafty man in him waited till the time was right and now is the time for him to strike.maybe the unp will not win in the cp or ncp but their showing will be so good that mahinda will be worried because that will be the beginning of the end for him.

see how this campaign will be conducted by the govt.it will be a complete race card as they have nothing else to shout about and this foolish country will respond but it is only after the election that the real fun will begin, with the dollar at 133 and climbing what will be the price of fuel and with it the cost of living, then we will have no other hope but ranil to pull us out of this mess.

unfortunately our country is still very racist and mahinda knows it very well and uses it to the maximum ranil also knows it only too well but will not use it as he is too much of a gentleman to stoop so low.

Whatever intellectuals we had or have yet left amongst us, were the products of the colonial education system that continued into the first decade of our independence. It is the literates we have produced since, who were taken for a ride by our politicians for a long time. Even these literates are beginning to think now and recognise that their millennia old values are being trashed by the present government. This perception is equal in intensity to the pains of tightening their belts a little more each passing day.

The UNP may be the beneficiary of the avalanche that is likely to bury the present government quite soon, because the worms- the patient and much abused public- are about to turn. I wonder whether the UNP will be ready to shoulder the burden of putting this country back on track, when this happens!? This is also a much vexed question that is bothering the people. The way things are moving in the country, the worms may decide to yet take the risk with the UNP.

    Dr. Rajasingham Narendran.

    Mr. Rajitha Bandara Gunawardana:

You have done an “admirable” and a “fantastic” job of issuing a “performance appraisal” and a “character certificate” to Mr. Ranil wickramaisnghe. It is worth millions. WHY?

Anyone who reads it will start “biting his/her” teeth in anger and contempt and the poor man will lose even the little respect and honour he has.

Did MR give this “assignment” to you? Don’t worry, MR will definitely reward you. Keep up the good work.

    Rajitha Bandara Gunawardena.

First of all you should unbderstand that CT readers who are more educated, more matured and cannot be easily duped like those village Gamaralas. Rajapakses know about that. May be your article on Ranil should be more suitable for those uneducated villege Gamaralas who could be easily duped with a packet of Rice or Kiribath or half pint Kasippu.

Could you answer to the following few questions before justifying your Ranil’s capabilities as a Leader.

    1) How come a record number of UNP MPs sixty five (65) altogether crossed over to Ruling party within last three years, which never occured in Sri Lanka’s history, and only after Ranil took over it’s leadership.

    2) How come a record number of UNP PC members either left UNP or were fired by Ranil, afrter bringing them to Disciplene committee. What crimes they did.

3)Who are these UNP goons who run this Disciplene committee. Remember Sri Lanka is not a Military Dictatorship yet, but Ranil acts like one.

4)Can you disprove that Ranil is not a Girlie Boy, although he is married.

5)Can you disprove that Ranil did not sexually harrased both Dayasiri and Akalanka Buddhika Pathirana. You say media insults and daily harassments happening daily against Ranil. Suppose if Dayasiri files a Law suit on asking sexual favours and sexual harassment against Ranil, do you still disprove what he or media say. We need answers.

There’s a greater possibility that Dayasiri will file a Sexual Harassment charge against Ranil.

6)Have you ever seen Ranil giving a Manly Speech or a talk like President Obama, Putin, Kim Il sung, during any meeting to attract Party and opposition mebers and supporters. That’s why Rajapakses love Ranil to be the opposition leader more than anybody else from opposition party.

    Watch following web videos.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWP1j6V9bgc
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph7BLpVahxk

He talks on Military rule like a queer.

7)Could you give us reasons why Ranil go to Araliya Gaha Medura to meet President on private visits and have Black coffee there and have private discussions. Please clarify. How many times did he go.

8)Why did Ranil gave away 2005 Presidential election to Rajapakse on a silver platter. He very well knew that Rajapakses bribed VP. Why didn’t he take any actions then. This was the best chance available and Ranil neglected. He just gave it away frustrating both UNP party Members and us the voters.

9)Why didn’t Ranil come to help CJ Dr.Shirani Bandaranayake knowing that she was Impeached on false grounds. Also with Gen.Sarath Fonseka whe he was falsely accused and sent to jail. How many times Ranil visited Gen Fonseka in Prison.

10)Why Ranil fired 15 UNP PC’s just one week ago when the PC election are at the corner.

11)Why did MR sent over 2000 Policemen to guard Sirikotha during the last UNP party leadership elections, to give cover to Ranil. Who is covering, safeguarding and give protection to Ranil now.

12)How come such an unpopular leader get such a huge 4,500 to 500 votes during the last UNP leadership nomination elections, while Rajapakses through police force restricted party members from getting inside.

13)How many mass meetings held and villages visited by Ranil during last six months.

14)How come Ranil lost 12 consecutive elections and still continue to be the party leader.

15)It is said Ranil’s annual parliament pay is 85 million rupees. Is it true, and if so what he does with that money. Does he help needy people. You say he is rich enough with no children. How many people he helped during last six months.

16)How many war victims, flood victims, syclone victims, Ranil helped during last six months. We saw only Sajith helping them.

17)Why Ranil always travel abroad when any elections are getting closer.

    18) Does Ranil like rotten eggs, rotten tomatoes, rotten onion, young b…ys, rotten potato.

If so please ask him to continue doing politics as opposition Leader.

We as Generations of UNPers feel betrayed, demoralised, run down, sadened by one selfish, greedy and power hungry dictator. Our Fathers and Grand fathers are strong UNPers long before Ranil did politics and now we feel deprived by one rotten egg.

Please arrange for an open interview discussion through mass media with both Ranil and Dayasiri and tell us what is truly going on inside UNP party.

We need answers and not Cowared hiding Jokers who are afraid of the truth.

Mr.Rajitha Bandara Gunawardena. Please answer to the above questions.

    Thank you.

      Jayantha:
The content of your ‘critique’ of this piece speaks very loudly of the kind of person you are.
God help Sri Lanka (and the UNP) if people of your kind – who should spend their time washing their mouths out three times a day with bar soap – call the shots for the people of this country and the UNP!
It is obviously people like you who have joined MR. Good riddance of bad rubbish is what that is! No self-respecting organization needs people whose mouths are in the gutter.

        Aney Apochchi,

It is you type of cowards who are fear of truth and who keep everything hiding under your Bellies that suddenly come out with a burst and dismental tha party.

Remember all our Generations are UNPers and still we are no matter who leads the party.

That’s why we are sad, angry and frustrated as to what’s going on in the party. If there are conspiracies going inside, they should be revealed and published. But not at the expense of loosing 12 consecuent elections and chasing over 65 Party members.Where is the winning strategy, helping party members and the voters, helping the public when in need and get their consent and support etc, etc.
Can Ranil give a strong and effective speech for one hour, and walk six miles to meet the voters and party supporters.
He could be a better strategist and a honest politician than Rajapakse. But that alone is not enough.

Did you ever herd of this “Kruthiyadi Mandalaya” in the history of UNP before. Who are these crooks who bring disciplene actions on party members when the party is even not in power. Is this a party or a Army camp. It is UNP MP’s who got their supporters vote to win elections and they should be respected and listen for that.

Do you think Ranil could win elections by Giving pep talks to media in his A/C cabin in Sirikotha. This is the guy who gave instructions to Madam Chandrika Kumaratunge on how to win elections. Can Ranil refute Dayasiri’s allegations and tell us what his plan for next ten years.

Either Ranil should mould himself to the current situation or say Goodbye to politics.

Finally now I have faith and trust at only in my Tamil Gardner called Podien who stays and take care of us for the last 45 years. Nobody else.

Sri Lanka’s Parliament is the biggest Thieve’s den and biggest white Elephant time waster in our country.

        keep dreaming.

4)Can you disprove that Ranil is not a Girlie Boy, although he is married

Why do you bother him being girle boy – if he is uncorrupted leader the lanka ever produced. This kind of defamation can bring you to apaya easily.

See, how respectable he has been sofar… compared to the idiots in the Rajapakshe bunch. You people have no respect towards any of good educated people. That is your problem SHAME on you and the ilk.

          Samson,

Sorry for been rude. I was referring to the topic by this writer “That MAN Ranil” Yes we all love real men like Gen. Sarath Fonseka who liberated our counry, and not the fake Comedy Drama actor who claim he liberated our country.

Ascondly it is not me, but Dayasiri who said it, and we want to know what he say about sexual harasment. Being gay and being a sexual harasser which is a crime are two different things.

Had Ranil been a Manly man, I don’t think he would have ever got defeated over 12 consequitive elections and still hang on to the leadership. Either he should start winning or should come up with a winning strategy or simply leave the post.

Please learn from Western democracies what they do to the loosers. Only one strike……just one strike is given. If failed…..out for LIFE. Not 12 times and still counting. This happens only in Sri Lanka.

We as UNPers are very hurt and sad as to what’s happening to our party.

We are also angry with the hi-class Pimp who has made the Parliament a Prostitution joint, buying them with peoples stolen money. Only Pimpiyas do this.

want to know what Ranil’s winning game plan is. Don’t see any progress yet. Only more defections. Ranil the Manly….Man. We need answers.

Ranil is Ranil, MR is MR.
what matters is the politics of Ranil when one would want to criticise him. Why to go that low level to make charactor assasinations ? These you would not see in well developed countries. Germany´s foreign minister Westerwelle and Berlin´s mayor Klaus are both gay men. People like their politics and nobody would attack them being gay. I have not read anywhere that general public criticise about their sexuality. I know lanken society is not that developed to treat gays, lesbians, transexuals or any others equally, but at least on this platform, we should not attack anyone them for their race, sexuality or religion as I feel.

Well said mr. Rajitha bandara gunawardena – There will be hope for a change when Sri Lankan general public gets out of this charismatic PR Politics to real policy and administration related politics with discipline which is the ONLY way to lead the nation to prosperity.

Don’t forget we were a colony for centuries, and deteriorated even further during 65 years of our so called independence, so it is indeed difficult to establish this ideology.

Its amazing how people conveniently ignore the truth and the hard way and fall for mere short term politics when there are thousands of examples all around the world.

Can anybody please confirm if Dayasiri Jayasekera really received 25 Million Rupees from President Rajapakse as crossover money to cross over to UPFA.

Remember it was Judas who betrayed Jesus for 40 pieces of Silver 2000 years ago.

Just curious to know if Hahin Fernando is telling the truth. If so doesn’t this falls under Bribery and corruption and should be punishable under law.

    If anybody could help please.

This s a very good question.

Today there are rumours of all kind in the country. Why cant opposition leaders make efforts finding the truth about the deal. This is unconsititutional. If the guy a day before his join to RULERS, gave interviews that he would NEVER leave the UNP but to change his opinion within hours thre should be good reasons.

There are very many issues that UNPers can investigate and open the eyes of the general public, but why is that the opposition stay indifferent?
This question could not explain me anyone of the above commentators :(

Ranil has been docile since 1994 so one can’t say it’s MR and the war etc.Wait, wait, waitey ranil.Politics is about giving leadership to your party at all levels, give them hope, killer political instincts, change public opinion etc.Wait..

If it was someone else he would have seen these provincials as a stepping stone to the big race of 2014 and would have started showing incumbent lapses a long time ago.Not Ranil or his WC (pun intended)Wait, wait, wait…we will start island wide…soon !

Ranil ….. hmmm not too sure. He seems passive and not someone who can lead the nation. He is waiting for his time and I hope it will come before he passes away.

There are some young guys who are very impressive. The MP for Badulla, Harin Fernando for example maybe a good choice.

The UNP needs to think not only of the now but the future and really invest in some young blood by giving them opportunity. They need to have a fresh concept of politics and move on from the old.

We definitely do not need the “Rajapaksha’s” in green clothing.

If all else fails AMARASIRI of the CT forum is my choice !
