The Change Started, But It Will Not Be Ending

By Asoka S. Seneviratne

Prof. Asoka.S. Seneviratne

Since March 2024, I have written 24 articles about the change Sri Lanka and its people have wanted since 1948, and the Anura Kumara Dissanayake/NPP has committed accordingly.  The change that the people and the country want to witness is massive in terms of economic, social, political, cultural, and many more. A peaceful or nonviolent presidential election marked the beginning of the realization of change, while the opposition advocated violent polls because of their bankruptcy in many ways. The presidential election paved the way for a peaceful transition of power under the power greed or part and parcel of the cunning politics and politicians for whom no more job vacancies in the country unless to have a peaceful retirement as the new generation Aragalaya youth are ready and committed look after country without power greed and cunning politics. Instead of many kilometers long parades of Army, Navy, and Airforce in the Gale face green along with the installation of temporary toilets for emergencies, the president’s swearing-in ceremony was confined to the president’s office, with only a few people attending, and witnessing the graceful event. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD) only spoke briefly about democracy and people’s rights, which is his ultimate commitment to the people and the country.   The above all are part and parcel of the expected change and, most importantly, saving taxpayers money. Also, people managed to save money on firecrackers and many other such expenses, which is against massive money spent on “Good News” for nothing due to the foolishness of the politicians. Given all this, the man sitting in the president’s chair is visionary; everything is simple and at minimum cost and time. In short, cunning politicians and their followers can learn a lot from AKD, but the lessons are too heavy in their reach due to low-quality mindsets.  Given the above, this paper aims to highlight a few facts about change in the right direction.

People and the country could feel the change

The events mentioned above and the situations are part and parcel of the country’s bankruptcy, so the AKD started the change significantly and truthfully so that the people who voted for AKD and did not vote, particularly for the latter, could feel and understand the change. The critical point is that people and the country can breathe fresh air as the government is with AKD/NPP. Indeed, it is a long way to go, more than 76 years since 1948. However, AKD/NPP knows well how to walk along the victory meaningfully and constructively in many ways. First, relief will be provided along with the rising cost of living. For this, among many, the stability of the rupee is the foundation or the anchor. Second is the head-on dealing with all forms of corruption and fraud. Indeed, this may take time, but the new government will go for it after having the complete administrative set up under the banner of AKD/NPP or dissolving the parliament soon and eventually creating a new parliament. The above will not hurt the people any way because they trust and believe in AKD/NPP.

Winning the others along the change

The unity of the people and the country is vital. This means it is a considerable task for AKD/NPP to obtain the support of millions of voters who did not vote for AKD. There are two aspects. First, except for a few, most of the 38 candidates were there because of the cunning politicians. Voting for them is an utter waste, so those voters will find the value of their votes with AKD/NPP during the parliamentary elections and maybe with local elections. Second, it is the majority of voters in the North and East. There is no doubt that those voters will find their way along with AKD/NPP because they can trust and believe AKD more now than before the presidential election. AKD, without any dressings or promises that cannot be fulfilled, is acceptable to the people compared to other South politicians who go to the North and East and occasionally only see the landscape there.

Defeated politicians along the change

Another fundamental aspect that we must understand is that all defeated politicians and political parties are not dead at all. From day one, they have been starving for power and loss of income or money, status, and privileges. These are their lifeblood, so they organize and work to regain all they lost. The Green politicians go with the elephant, as the gas bottle is empty; any independence will not work anymore. SJB passes best wishes to AKD, once KAIYANYAKE, so people feel sorry for him or SJB. An economist/politician of SJB talked about the division in NPP/JVP while his party is burnt with divisions and, hence, inferior exposure. Namal/SLPP, wearing about 3% winning the medal, once sarcastically talked about the possibility of winning AKD at the presidential election, having 3% in 2019, will start selling the rotten policies of his father; it is very doubtful that SLPP could win at least parliamentary seat during the next parliamentary election. Generally, as I have written many times, all opposition political parties and politicians in the South see AKD/NPP as their common enemy because they are politically blind, power-hungry, opportunistic, selfish, and many more negatives.

People and the country trust AKD to make all changes

Generally, changes are fundamental, dynamic, and demanding, so they are not time-bound. Some changes can be quick, others take time, and some are long-term. AKD/NPP will make changes on priority and step by step, along with what he promised. However, the impact of any change on the masses and the country must be positive; people must be able to feel, understand, and be convinced. Only then could the welfare and well-being of the masses be enhanced, step by step, in the right direction. On top of the above, the masses and the country trust and believe in AKD for all because he is the choice of the majority of voters in the country.

The unity of the people and the country is vital…………Second, it is the majority of voters in the North and East.
The past performance of the Sinhala Nation was based on racism and Buddhist Fundamentalism. I am sure majority of the Sinhalese were guided by the Political and Religious thugs with false fear about Tamils and made Tamils as enemies of the country. We should understand that Tamil speaking people were majority in the North East before the independence of this island with the long history. We should look at the current picture of Sri Lanka and compare it with the past you will see what changes have happened during the past 75 years of history because of the racism and Fundamentalism. If there was any racism and Fundamentalism the country would not need to be in debt of $100 billions and now beg the whole world. Tamils who were chased away are now in a position to help their mother land but it is up to the NPP to take initiatives to ensure that Tamils have the same right as Sinhalese in a united Country assuring that they are safe and share the power in a secured traditional homeland.

All you Ranil supporters listen to this ……….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrtAZTgQsKQ

I too, once was a supporter/believer of Ranil.

Native, What have you got to say? …….. You can condemn with utter conviction Sirimavo, Mao, Kamal, Gunduvindu, Wimal, ……. but not Ranil! Why the mental block?

Ramona, Why shouldn’t I target the crude, backward, corrupt to the core wild hick in a suit and tie, Ranil? …….. If it’s good for him to do these things, is it wrong to target him?

It’s not a suit and tie that makes a man cultured and sophisticated but his actions.

I say unto ye that mud-hut-born AKD is a vastly more cultured and sophisticated modern man than Ranil.

      Get over falling for visuals ……. Ranil’s suit, Mahinda’s red-scarf, ……. that’s how you’ve been had.

Open ye eyes and minds and …….. embrace the brave new world. ………. Or die with the same old beliefs and prejudices.

“…false fear about Tamils and made Tamils as enemies of the country. “
Some of it false, yes. But what the Vaddukkoddai Resolution and Indian meddling meant to an average Sinhalese is not imagined.
What about attacks on Sinhalese civilians by VP’s cyanide brigade? False?
      *
Since around 1960, the Tamil leadership did everything it could to reject friendly forces among the Sinhalese.
Even this time the JVP was painted as more racist than the two wings of the UNP.
There is an emotional inability of the Tamil nationalists to see other Tamil speaking minorities as their equals.

        SJ,
What about attacks on Sinhalese civilians by VP’s cyanide brigade? False?
I know you no other option other than bring LTTE in all your comments. This highlights your blood thirsty Sinhala racism. You are part and partial of Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalism in Sinhala only act in 1956 and burning of Tamils in 1958 and Buddhism as special status on the constitution. You are a partner of 1977 massacre of Tamils civilians. What is your loyalist Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalist law did protect to Sinhalese civilian from LTTE cyanide brigade? Just to Kill Tamils all over the island. Is that your law?

Could anyone explain to us why the Elephant Pass garrison was created in the early 1960s and by whose order?

It was Siri Mao who ordered the creation of Elephant pass to detain illegal immigrants.

Ajith, your statement is vital even as you say, “The unity of the people and the country is vital” We need this “secured traditional homeland”, and we need to give the President and his team time to bring the necessary actions, which may be obstructed by all who have lost their robbed stuff. The English language must be encouraged wherever possible. This was our experience during our school days with no thoughts of divisions. The “now time” is different though, but the President is a visionary. Many are unaware of all the fasting church prayers that called on God for his will, non-violence, peace and rest for all citizens. The answer came. Many are also unaware that Israel can never be wiped out as finally re-established in 1948, for the final return of Jesus to Jerusalem which cannot be divided to be given to attacking terrorists.

    About the
“ new generation Aragalaya youth”, I HOPE none of them belong to the Sinhala Buddhist supremacist or anti-minority groups of lay or clergy people.
Should not these people sent for REHABILITATION so that they will see everyone as EQUAL in SL and that they are not above LAW. It is time Defence forces too see minorities aren’t inferior people who can be trampled.
I do sincerely hope that they aren’t involved in promoting drug culture in SL especially in the North and East of the country

Since the STATE SPONSORED 1983 riots, SL diaspora became divided along the ethnic groups. It is time we start integrating and work towards helping the motherland to achieve peace and prosperity in a decade. It will be helpful if the countries such as Australia NZ USA Europe and UK could track people who have stolen money from SL Central Banks etc.

The Diaspora was small until after 1983.
But segregation had started much earlier.
1958 did much damage. So did every piece of mass violence since 1977.
      Standardization did its bit.
Middle class envy and rivalry have always been divisive.

It is also time to replace all the political appointees to the foreign countries as High Commissioners or Ambassadors. Please do not fill these posts from EX Security Forces.
AKD should seek SL diaspora to take an active role in improving the country’s economy

Too many people are employed by the Defence ministry without any actual work to do. They should be used to improve the public health as well as the environment around the area they are employed. Hopefully they cease any business or agricultural activities.

Though again yesterday TamilWin reported the rupee is falling with the arrival of the new president, the rupee went up sharply today. A reversal of the trend for the whole month.
Though for the last two years Evil’s hell angel gang was threatening that Langkang will be deserted on the day they are defeated, the international community has returned, even before any special effort started under new change of policies, but with the usual diplomatic channels. That is the biggest defeat for Evil, many times more than the election itself. The crook thought that he could threaten the masses and swindle the election, showing the Toilet commode he was carrying. President has to leave it on a smart hand to turn it into a meaningful relationship. The West is for trade, India and Japan for help. China turned out to be a powerful force. Instead of allowing local IRCs to make commissions out of massive white elephants, with that relationship, small and profitable projects can be negotiated with them.

The victory of the NPP against all odds was nothing short of miraculous. They should now focus on creating a united Sri Lanka in which all citizens are treated as equal stakeholders in the rebuilding process of this tiny island which has been ravaged by successive governments since 1977.

“On top of the above, the masses and the country trust and believe in AKD for all because he is the choice of the majority of voters in the country.”
Prof. ASS, the definition of a majority is 50+ or in other words ‘more than half of a total’. Of the total 100% of valid votes cast, AKD got 42%. This means that he did not get 58% of the votes cast in this election: 100-42 = 58. If you take into account the total of registered voters, 20% of whom did not bother to vote, an even larger proportion of voters than 58% did not vote for AKD. Thus, it is clear that ‘he is not the choice of the majority of voters’. How come you have such a hard time calculating a simple percentage?

    • 3
      9

      Mani,

The Maths is more involved than that. If you split Ranil’s vote into two, 17.3/2= 8.65, and add it to Anura’s vote, 42.3+8.55 = 50.95%. This means that the majority voted for Anura.

      • 4
        9

Actually more than half of Ranil’s votes would have gone to Anura because many of the monied Elite who voted for Ranil would have not liked things like the land-bridge and Indian merge. And Sajith’s people abhorred Ranil.

      • 8
        3

        Ramona ,
        “If you split Ranil’s vote into two, 17.3/2= 8.65 and add it to Anura’s vote, 42.3+8.55 = 50.95%. “
Well, why not reduce Anura to the 3 % he got in 2019, and add the 39 % to Ranil? So Ranil won with 17+ 39 = 56%..
I can see you are an even better mathematician than Professor ASS.

        SJ,
I am not easily depressed. I fully agree that AKD won the highest number of votes in this presidential election fair and square, and my congratulations to him and the NPP for running a slick campaign. However, I have low tolerance for those who make factual and arithmetical errors. The fact remains that AKD is a ‘minority president’ as he does not have 50%+1 of the vote. I also feel rather sorry for AKD considering the calibre of supporters he has in CT – with friends like these, he does not need any enemies.

If AKD, govt can fulfill 10 % of what he promised in the the very first year, and 50 % by the end of term, ( what others couldn’t / didn’t/ failed / lied……. ) , I consider it a SUCCESS , “worth the change”. After 75 years of BS, if AKD can show real progress in three main areas, economy, reconciliation and democratic process…………job well done. In a terminal illness, 50 % progress is considered “LIFE SAVING “.

Whether it’s conclusion or culmination of Aragalaya, doesn’t really matter. Facts are 1) A party which never got more than 5 % national votes received more than 40 % 2) Obviously all communities including Tamils and Muslims voted for AKD. ( not SB only ) 3) RW says he has had enough, along with him, the party and symbol may soon retire. ( in the absence of RW, there is still a possibility of merger with SP ) 4) Along with UNP…… SLPP, SLFP and minority parties are in the verge of extinction. 5) If Anura fulfill half of what promised, may end 75 years of family politics / nepotism / cronyism….. 6) All the Kapputa BS, couldn’t save Namal’s deposit money. 7) A good number of votes SP and RW received in this election are of minority. 8) In future, instead of following party directions, they are better off strategically aligning with newly formed parties, for the good of their community ( happens all the time , with the regional parties in India ). The newer parties are more willing to adopt policies, in sharing, partnering, and working with minorities. As a single group , with a workable common agenda, minorities can easily become the deciding force. With their votes AKD could have easily managed 50% + 1 simple majority.

“Obviously all communities including Tamils and Muslims voted for AKD.”
I wish that this was substantially true. In fact, a very low percentage voted, and that was not surprising. The Tamil electorate has been tutored for decades to support the UNP and its clones when there is no Tamil nationalist in sight. There are SLFP voters– much less in number still but far ahead of the JVP. Let us hope that the JVP changes things round by doing things right.

Also there is need for caution. The recently appointed Chairman of CEB has business interests (Chairman RMA Energy) and his wife is a director. It provides consultancy to development finance organizations.
There is a serious conflict of interests as he is among the most powerful voices of the coal lobby.
The CEB has been a den of corruption and it is hard to find an untainted professional, and hence the case for caution.

Tony, we both seem to agree on one thing, “there has been 75 years of BS “, leading to systemic / systematic bankruptcy. Rest, I go with Nimal’s opinion, ” can anyone including AKD be any worse than 75 years of BS” ??? Though not significant, i already see some positives 1) AKD got all the used, imported govt vehicles for public viewing, so that the public is now aware of the count and his govt is accountable. He could have done it anyway he wanted. 2) PM passed orders, not to invite politicians to school functions 3) Return to the old passport issuing system, and look into scam behind overnight privatizing. 4) gave due credit to Ranil for saving money and fuel, so that there is no crisis to deal, right a way. Do anyone remember what Mahinda, Gotha, Pissu Sira did, soon after their appointment ?? I do.

            5) security arrangements for all sundries(former parliamentarians, and ministers) withdrawn 6) road blocks to VVIP including President’s house reopened after years of closure 7) apparently 85 parliamentarians may lose their perks and pensions , money well saved 9) soon to reopen Easter Attack cases. 10) looking into legal hurdles such as President entitlement act of 1986 to cut former Presidents perks, free housing…..10) person who came through ranks,( started as PC ) now senior DIG , appointed as acting IGP

The right minded Sri Lankan citizen is not against the Buddhism and those practicing it in true manner. The Sinhala politicians and the Clergy (monks) who are utilising religion for their own political and economic advancement AND not to the benefit of advancement the entire country.
If the Singhalese had practiced their religion in a faithful way for the last 76 years they would not have HARMED their OTHER brothers and sisters in SL.

” The Change Started”. What nonsense.

Did you not see an NPP “Stalwart” visiting the Galle Face to inspect the cars parked (a media reported “Abandoned”) at the Galle Face with a camera crew and making a hue of a cry alleging that the unautharised persons of the previous regime used those vehicles?

Then today the Media Secretary to the President said: “Those Returned Vehicles”
were parked at the Galle Face green for lack of space in other areas. However, a stock verification and to whom those vehicles were allocated would be known later.

I am glad the “Change” had started with the officials. Still, I regret and condemn the arrogance and the stupidity of the politicians, like Wasantha Samarasinghe – the NPP “Executive Member” who made a “Raod Show” at Galle Face Green.

Ranil the “Suthara Puncha” is still trying to poke his nose without accepting the ardent fact that the people do not want him to be in politics again. He has not only been kicked on his back during his last general election where not only him but also the entire UNP was kicked ouas t of the parliament. During the recent presidential election in addition to the past kick on his back, he was slapped right across his face again by the voters.

He has now declared that he will not contest an election but be in politics. Under Ranil UNP has been ruined and I wonder why the rank and file of UNP has not kicked him out of the party. He is now trying to unite the opposition to which SJB will never agree as long as he is the leader of UNP and will be involved in politics. Has Ranil not realized the opposition other than SJB and the ruling NPP all the others are crooks, murderers, bribe takers, drug lords and untrustworthy individuals. Is Ranil trying the build an alliance of the CRIOOKS?

If we accept the rule of those who think they are the bosses and lords of nothing will change for the people on the bottom. All parties may get togher to fight the NPP as to cover up there misdeed.

To day it is by the people for the from the people, The outcome of the previous election reflects not just the votes, but the heartfelt emotions and promises made by the leaders by tarrgeting small people.
Concerns about Ranil Wickremesinghe and his connection to past controversies, such as the bond scam in Sri Lanka, and possibly implying that the IMF (International Monetary Fund) is cautious about him due to these allegations, That the reason.
