The Coming Nationalist Juggernaut – 2020

By Lakshan Sathokorala

The Progressive Liberal World Order, itself borne out of the disastrous War on Terror and Invasion Iraq, and which ruled the roost for 10 long years at least, is now on decline, possibly until President Donald Trump finally wears off his welcome, mainly due to economic meltdown brought on by his isolationist foreign policy and/or protectionist economic policy, each of which are too early to predict at this early stage. But what of the Sri Lankan Political scene?

Winter of Discontent ?

The alleged mismanagement of Rajapaksa regime brought those touting Good Governance to power in what rather optimistically termed as January 8 Revolution. Then we heard theories about ethnic distribution of votes and voting patterns and this led to intense debates in social media and political forums. But barely two months in to that exalted reign, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe saw it fit get himself involved in a what seems to be a shady treasury bond issue and its fallout now hurting his “Mr Clean” image more deeply than any reports of the Batalanda Commission appointed by the ex- President Chandrika Kumaratunga, more so given rumors, some verified, that the prime movers behind the Bond scam are now aiming to acquire a loss making TV station and to start a brand new newspaper publishing company with whooping salaries for the journalists headhunted from other establishments, with a view to prop up Mr. Wickremesinghe in a future Presidential Poll. Further the talk of the street pithily describe the Government as pure snake gourd or “pathola” meaning that it has ground to a halt without any noticeable development activities to be spoken of even while people are saddled with an unprecedented tax burden. Added to this the disaffection among ordinary Sinhalese Buddhists that this government favors minority interests over their wellbeing and that it has ulterior motive of division of country along ethnic lines via a Federal constitution, despite numerous assurances given by both President and the Prime Minister. The arbitrary halting of the Sampur Coal Power Plant Project and Government’s misguided dependence on so-called “Alternative Energy Sources” means that Sri Lanka is notoriously ill equipped to face the supposed Power Crisis come 2018. Those of the urban middle class who voted with their feet having disgusted with cronyism and alleged corruption of the Rajapaksa regime are now red in the face having their hopes dashed rather unceremoniously. All eyes are now fixed on the 2020 Presidential Election.

The Numbers Game

After the disastrous Peace Process of the previous UNF government of 2001-2004, a sizable section of the right wing conservative Sinhala Buddhists defected to the newly formed Hela Urumaya which capitalized on the death of Ven. Soma to win 10 Parliamentary seats in 2004 election. Mahinda Rajapaksa successfully managed court these votes during Presidential Elections. When Patali Champika Ranawaka boasted after the Presidential Elections 2015, that it was JHU instrumental in the downfall of Rajapaksa regime, that statement is not without significant merits. It was not the groundswell of support for the Common Candidate from minority centric electorates in the North and East that ensured his eventual victory, but the considerable sway in the highly populous, nationalistic Sinhala Buddhist dominated electorates in the Western Province like Kaduwela, Gampaha, Maharagama, Homagama, Kesbewa etc. and a major factor behind that sway is the defection of Champika Ranawaka and the JHU. And any reversal of these votes will surely offset any large gains from minority dominated districts. And further we can expect even other electorates of the South and not to mention Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts voting the nationalist candidate with higher margins. The deep felt disaffection on Sinhala Buddhist electorate would propel them to vote in same numbers as the Mahinda Rajapaksa’s triumphant 2010 Presidential Election.

But this sway is no longer there. The actions of the Sirisena- Ranil Government, even though they may had best intentions for the country at heart, alienated this nationalist voting bloc, making not the pseudo- Marxist, internationalist JVP but the Sinhala Buddhist nationalist faction of the SLFP led by Mahinda Rajapaksa the clear favorites. The hopes of JHU to play the ace by gobbling up a sizable chunk of nationalist SLFP votes is now dashed by the sins of association, and JVP is discredited with highly effective allegations of collusion with UNP and TNA. But there’s another significant factor that would surely come in to play in 2020.

The Not So Dark Horse

There are not so subtle hints about what the race in 2020 is going to look like. Ranil Wickremesinghe has already thrown his hat into the ring despite being severely handicapped in several fronts, not the least of which is credibility factor. There is also some talk about Presidential ambitions of Champika Ranawaka, who at the moment, it is said, is planning to leave the Government. But as explained above his chances are also shot the by the sins of association. Mahinda Rajapaksa of course will not contest thanks to the intricacies of 19th Amendment. So the room is wide open another actor, namely the former Secretary to the Ministry of Defence (but often mistakenly called with the non-existent title of Defence Secretary) Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the man behind the war victory against the LTTE and subsequently the accelerated urban development. Already he has been sending out feelers to this effect via interviews, tweets etc. and also an organization of nationalist professionals called Viyathmaga has sprang up to support his candidacy. His clear endorsement of Trump victory and talks about an “outsider” taking on the political system signifies his wish to do the same in Sri Lankan context.

The lack of palpable progress, the feeling that the government is getting nowhere and is not in the control of events gives way to yearnings by even the most sanguine people for a “benevolent dictatorship” to put things in order. Indeed it is this sort of illiberal thinking that paves way for nightmares a la V for Vendetta style. We have already seen an example of such in the United States, where the liberal political order unraveled by what the irrepressible Michael Moore called as “Angry White Men” in his pre-election essay uncannily predicting a Trump victory. So will 2020 be the time for those disaffected voters of the Sinhala Buddhist middle class irate as they are by the disproportionate empathy that the Government allegedly has for the ethnic minorities , those frustrated professionals whose Good Governance dreams are dashed by the ubiquitous claims of corruption leading up to the highest of the land , the Sinhala Buddhist villagers who had their hopes dashed due to Government attitudes towards agriculture, the moderate urban voter reeling under the cost of living brought on by the weak economic policies and resultant tax burden and the young voter who feel their votes wasted to bring about an ineffectual government out of touch with their hopes and aspirations, to come together and giver one angry retort against the incumbent regime ushering a landslide for a nationalist President who may or may not be a benevolent dictator ? The indications are certainly pointing that way. Let us fervently hope that a V for Vendetta scenario would not unfold.

If Gotabaya would be elected, youth of the country will go on protests until the man will leave the office. Intoxicated rural folks perhaps will him to be the president but not ones with some knowledge about the future of this country will ever want to represent the nation a candidate of Gota sorta: He proved well his abilities letting any journalists, professionals,go missing if they rose against him. Youth of this country will never support stupid men again.

      Thanks.

This is why the Gamarala has earned the titles of Turncoat, Traitor, Gona (Sinhala colloquial) and Mala-Perethya (eating off those who were killed by the Rajapaksas), for being bought out by from the stolen billions of public finds, from most of the 6.2 million who voted for Sirisena.

So, naturally, people will look for an alternative.

These punnakku eaters abuse peoples funds for their business class travels.
Why cant the buggers just fly in economic classs if the security is tight ?
That way these men could save millions to lankan state.
As a repay, at least today, these ballige puthas should see it.

Why to drag the country to the level of parkistan by electing former Army man – who is reported to have left the country at the time the war was at it heights -(betrayal), but to eat the cake sharing with his brother, he immeidately returned to the country after 15 years of exile in the US. All these prove well, if anyone would have a brain the size of a mustard seed, if the guy would have been appropriate to run this country.
If that is the case, former Kelaniya Man Mervin who with all last foul mouth should also be suitable to earn a chance.

So long grass eaters are the majority – any stupid men like Gota or his brother can be elected. Only person in that family, one can rely on is former speaker, Chamal. I heard him saying ” that we have to accept that we made mistakes, huge mistakes just because of bad company”. Latter is not yet expressed by Meehraka Rjapakshe who was the leader of nation until 8th Jan 2015.

Our hope is people will grow up by 2020.
I believe end of next year, things will turn to show all these men they current men have achieved something. We dont want to walk backward – under the guidance of stupid Rajapakshes again.

Excellent article. His excellency Gotabaya has no time to relax, he defeated the Elam terrorists successfully, now he should be ready to defeat growing Muslim terrorism.

If Ranil contests then UNP loses. We need Sajith at least or Marikkar who is very popular among non-Muslims too.

The entire country knows that Gotabhaya was de facto president/PM between 2005 and Jan 2015,so he can’t compare himself with Donald Trump! Also, the country doesn’t want white vans etc again… I think, there is room for another term of Sirisena administration from 2020, if the executive presidency left intact after the constitutional change/amendment. If it changes there can be other options such as incumbent president returning to parliament as the former president did this time!!

This article is far more on target than the prognostications of many liberal/pseudo-progressive pundits. It is also borne out by the three scenarios rolled out in the recent lecture by Prof Razeen Sally.

In the interests of transparency I must add though, that given the present deterioration, I am hopeful and supportive of a Gotabhaya candidacy in 2020, just as I was of a Mahinda candidacy in 2005 against a similar backdrop (CFA-ISGA-PTOMS).

Dayan, You supported Mahinda’s candidacy in 2015 too after putting a big U-turn, ain’t you? You can try your luck again to come to limelight, get a big post and/or other self-served reasons in another 3-4 years!! Start praising Gota from now on. hi hi :)

        He has already.

We thought LTTE and JVP had fascistic tendencies, now it transpires this war monger Dayan too has been harbouring fascista ideology.

If it is unavoidable, indeed if we need a fasista to lead this island, let us elect Field Marshal the war criminal Sarath.

Will the war criminal deport the war monger to North Korea?

      Dayan,

      Gota is a crazed serial-killer.

A serial-killer lacking neither skills nor guts to do his own killing.

When the SL self-proclaimed “intelligentsia” advocates a serial-killer’s elevation to the highest office of the land, it’s tragedy playing out as comedy.

It shows the level of scholarship of the SL pundits! That’s why Dayan can’t find work in any other country and has to be a court-jester cum foot-servant to the Rajapakses.

It was an anti vote and not a revolution!

I appeal for the formation of a broad front or a grand coalition of Sinhala Budhists, Tamil Hindus and Muslims, latter others could be added.

Even an initiative for the formulation of the grand coalition could be a catalyst for an all inclusive, development oriented, democratic Sri Lanka

True, but …so what? As Susie Linfield wrote in The Nation ( USA) about that great leftwing intellectual and scholar of international relations, Emeritus professor Fred Halliday of the LSE:

“Halliday believed that the duty of committed intellectuals is to keep their eyes open, to learn from history, to be humble enough to be surprised (and to admit being wrong). The alternative was what he called “Rip van Winkle socialism.” He sometimes told his friends, “At my funeral the one thing no one must ever say is that ‘Comrade Halliday never wavered, never changed his mind.’”

            I am an intellectual.

            I am a left-wing intellectual.

I am > or = to any other intellectual.

I define what intellectualism is about.

            I am intellectually honest.

I supported Iraq war that is what intellectuals do, and for that simple reason, I call myself a maverick.

I can move away from my overtly stated position left to right anytime I want to, sometimes I take 64 positions all at the same time because I am an intellectual.

If you don’t agree with me you are not a smart patriot. (By the way, my great patriots are Wimal Sangili Karuppan Weerawamsa, Dinesh, Vasu, … .)

I hope I have made myself clear.

            4. Why not you as a humble person- make every effort to offer your knowledge in the reconcilitory tasks towards sustainable peace. Why you support extremists ? Why would you explain your students, if they would pose your above questions:

And he is the person to know anything and everything better than to anyone.
Please listen to his discussions/diaglogues given to Killis sender.
There, he often overestimates his knowledge. The moderators still call him to be a the most senior diplomat to have maintained higher knowledge about lanken external affairs.
I wonder why ? Do not wee have even more qualified professors in and out of the country that have records abot the international relations between srilanka and IC ?

As you may be aware, few months ago, DJ made efforts to get close to Mr President. For somereasons, Mr Sirisena did not invite him for any further discussions. This and PM s total ignorance towards DJ seems not digestable to him today.
And we perfectly know Killis programmes promote more Sajith Premadasa. And people are well aware th efacts about Sajith and DJ relationship. DJ was the lap dog of Premadasa senior in late 80ties. Sadly so called self-proclaimed analyst has records being close to notorious politicians of the country.

2020 srilankan president will be and must be Ranil. As per the article Ranil is in a tight situation because the SLFP portion of useless goon ministers are ensuring with the support of national media prestitutes that as if they are champions of all good deeds of the government. Eg look at the fish ban. It was ranil and mangala who were able to revoke it but mahinda amaraweera went to media first to take credit. Educated people know this and they would always prefer Ranil. Maithri has no chance of winning as he is a useless puppet who thinks 62 lakh voted for him but truth is they voted for a change and not for him. A ranil vs gota race in 2020 is possible but the last thing srilankanz would want at this stage is to bring in a corrupt murderer gota as president. Gota did not do anything for the war he just came in and became defense sec. It was fonseka and commanders who ran the war. But again with srilankan politics he ensured he gaained brownie points. 2020 ranil vs gota or educated vs uneducated

Many posts are in FB saying GR would be the Leader I do not know when it would be. No one comment on that since even today almost all in our country are afraid of him due to what we all heard he did. Even today our country is under fear. I do not how things happen. There were many serious incidents where no one has found s responsible. I do exactly know even today how our people are afraid to talk thow it is not visible.

I respect him since he contributed to war. But I strongly and with responsibility write he is not appropriate for the future Leader of our country which protected Noble Buddhism for 2500 years in the name of Supreme Lord Buddha. If he become the Leader I am dead sure we all have to live in severe fear.

The reason for the current economic predicament of this country is because of the massive loans taken for unnecessary white elephant projects and economic activities which did not bring in any benefits to the masses because of pervasive corruption and cronyism ruled the roost, in fact the economy was in a much better shape during the insurgency and war years.

On top of this, they put the country in to an irreversible communal mayhem which is taking the country back by another 25 years.

So do we need these people to rule the country again, NO, not for another 100 years.

Let’s hope by 2020 saner council will prevail and we will have good progressive leaders like Lee Kwan Yu and Mahathir

These days Sinhalese men obsess about some Sinhalese women throwing their underwear at Enrique Iglesias at a concert in Colombo. Look at their online papers and you’ll see no other headline but that. It’s so much of a scandal that it even led to a presidential intervention. Really. Sinhalese men decry the ‘shame’ these women have put upon their Sinhalese Buddhist nation and culture. And men of course. Basic patriarchal rhetoric you could say. Male organisers, including that nationalist prick Sangakkara, had to publically apologise for making the event possible in the first place. For them it was an attempt of bringing – post-genocide, of course not their lingo – Sri Lanka back on the international tourist map. It reminds you of Sinhalese Buddhists obsessing about young Sinhalese openly kissing in public spaces or Akon being denied a visa for having women in bikinis dance in the presence of a Buddha statue.
Ideas aroud chastity of course only limit Sinhalese women. Sinhalese men aren’t policed to the same extent – esp those in power. More so, when Sinhalese men use their dicks as part of Sri Lanka’s neocolonial project – as a virtual weapon against so-called ‘terrorism’ (read Tamils) – they are in fact honoured and promoted. In this case, sexual promiscuity is seen as necessary. It is employed as an institutional means to break the will and social fabrics of an entire people. It’s a state-sanctioned tactic of terror and genocide. While Sinhalese women are reprimanded by Sinhalese men for what they call ‘obscene acts’, Tamil women (and men) are sexually violated by Sinhalese soldiers, intelligence agents, police officers and others with impunity. Sinhalese men all the while write opinion pieces about the ‘shame’ Sinhalese women have put upon them and their patriarchal culture. Not Sinhalese soldiers, police officers and others. When the Sinhalese state revealed the faces of Sinhalese porn actors and actresses in order to stifle the local porn industry, it was an effort that only concerned Sinhalese culture. The very same state simulatenously started flooding Tamil areas with porn and drugs in order to demobilize Tamil youths and keep them from resisting state oppression. With no outcry by the champions of Sinhala Buddhist purity. Denial, silence and complicity is their response.

Hope you feel better after vomiting out all that hatred. If I had written this replacing the word ‘Sinhalese’ for ‘Tamil’ and vice versa, you would be screaming about Sinhala racism.

        Taraki

“Hope you feel better after vomiting out all that hatred.” It is one reason as to why I advise sachooooooothe stupid II and Nuisance the stupid I to carry a spittoon (padikkama) all the time.

“If I had written this replacing the word ‘Sinhalese’ for ‘Tamil’ and vice versa, you would be screaming about Sinhala racism.”

You don’t have to replace words, just face it you are a racist.

I dont think that over 1 million new voters would ever give Gota or any nationalists a chance.

They perfectly knew that Rajapakshes would never fit to lanken leaderships at the time, the very same social media leading youth stood against MR during last two elections.

Even if the current duo have failed to fulfil all pledges, somthing towards democracy they have achieved. 19th AMD to the prevailing constitution and several other rights allowing people to criticise anyone by today. But not having done enough with passing info to the ground levels of society, they have met on cross roads by today.

The first step towards cleaning up the political morass we are in is to jail all those politicians who have cases pending against them (if they are found to be guilty).

The problem with this is that the present leadership doesn’t have the balls to do so for the reasons that should be clear to us all. They are all self-serving parasites, as should be obvious from their actions.
