The European Union Made Me Laugh (For A While)

By Malinda Seneviratne

Malinda Seneviratne

When Barack Obama was named winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize for Peace, I laughed. I likened the decision to offering a ‘Man of the Match’ before the toss of coin in a cricket match. When Liu Xiaobo was named as winner the following year I was amused. It was “for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China”. I was amused because no North American or European Union writer with ten times Xiaobo’s skill writing extensively on the horrendous crimes against humanity perpetrated by the governments on these continents would ever get a Nobel Prize.

This year they gave it to the European Union and I laughed and laughed and laughed. The EU is on the verge of bankruptcy and its global role has been reduced to one of raising hand to whatever the USA proposes and defending verbally or with silence when silence is a crime all manner of terrorist acts authored by Washington and executed by its potent massacre-squads. The EU is complicit in crimes against humanity and genocide in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, not to mention the orchestrated violence in Arab, which Washington spin doctors had the audacity to call ‘a spring’! Rev. Jesse Jackson said ‘Those who own the drones are guilty (of crimes against humanity)’; the cheering squads are guilty too. ‘Just another of those things,’ I told myself and duly forgot about it.

I had forgotten about the Nobel Prize until last week, when I received an invitation from Bernard Savage, Ambassador, Head of Delegation of the EU to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, no less. It was for a cocktail reception. And the occasion….(hold your breath now!)….’To celebrate the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize 2012 to the European Union’. No, I didn’t puke. I guffawed. Uncontrollably. ‘Just another of those things,’ I told myself and duly forgot about it.

They didn’t let me forget. Two days later I get a ‘gift pack’ from the same office; a card holder, a desk calendar, a t-shirt and a pen drive (see pics). I stopped laughing at this point.

Why on earth should I wear a t-shirt with an EU logo? I am not a citizen of an EU country and moreover people like me (brown skinned, born in Asia, Africa and Latin America) are not just discouraged from applying for citizenship but are obstructed, legally. The racism in Europe against non-white is matched only in North America. So this was not a come-hither, do-this, now-wear-the-t-shirt kind of invitation. It’s more like some nosey-parker coming here, doing ‘that’, getting the t-shirt and saving the story in a pen drive, except that the EU Mission in Colombo wants me to be brand ambassador of sorts.

The desk calendar had beautiful pictures, all drawn by a Sri Lankan child from Mawanella, all ‘signatured’ with the EU logo and ‘European Union’ in large font (English) and smaller fonts in Sinhala and Tamil. It’s not that the child or those depicted in the drawings have anything common with Europe or that they are on the same footing with children in that part of the world. The EU has graphically ‘owned’ these people and got an innocent Sri Lankan child to endorse the fact!
It is not one of those things. It is no laughing matter.

It didn’t end there. The EU Mission then sends me a greeting card. ‘Seasons Greetings,’ it said. What season, I wondered. Perhaps they believe this is the season for humiliation and plunder, the season for taking me for a fool and the season for getting me to inhabit their version of my reality.

I thought this was it. I thought wrong. On Thursday I get a ‘Media Pack’ from the EU about the Nobel Prize, replete with a ‘fact sheet’. It detailed ‘how the EU works’, the policies and activities of the EU, and how the EU ‘spreads peace and democracy’. It took the cake. A sunshine story if ever there was one! Nothing of its considerable track record in plunder and genocide, the unwashable blood of all the continents on its hands, the policy of supporting tyrants and endorsing genocidal action in the name of democracy, in the name of peace, and the rampant racism and Christian fundamentalism that defines these countries.

To cap it all, the ‘media pack’ had a beautifully done cover of a white boy and a Sri Lankan girl placing ‘EU stars’ on a Sri Lankan beach.

I had long since stopped laughing. It was tough not to puke.

      Get you facts right fool!
In a few years the US will be a BROWN majority country and race relations there are far more complex than your simple mind can grasp!
And let’s talk about brown brothers oppressing fellow brown brothers and brown sisters – ethnic war in Lanka and the Kangaroo Court run by your favourit president and his family of morons – before we distract ourselves with distant luxuries and falsehood like the statement – “racism in Europe against non-white is matched only in North America.”

Perhaps the Nobel prize was for continuing to be generous to Sri Lanka in the face of ingratitude and vilification. :-)

Never mind Malinda, your nominee Mahinda Rajapakse might still win it next time for “ending terrorism in Sri Lanka without causing a single civilian casualty”

Is there truly no limit to the hypocrisy of this “purchased” jackass?

One thing’s for sure, if everyone who read his pro-Rajapaksa rubbish reacted appropriately, they’d all need saline intravenously to replace all the liquid they’d lost due to the resultant puking!

Come on CT, PLEASE spare us the bloody aggravation of this character’s “writing.”. Isn’t it sufficient that he has a whole newspaper – even a Rajapaksa one – to publish his hosannas to those on high, no matter how “veiled?”

Were you also laughing when STF shot 16 prisoners dead, with a few in handcuffs, and the next morning before dawn, police shot dead 11 prisoners whom they had called out by name and taken outside?
    No inquiry.
This type of cold blooded murder of persons in state custody does not happen in the European Union countries.
Crimes against humanity happened all over the world, not only in the EU.
But the EU now has stringent laws against it and the smallest infraction of human rights can be brought to the notice of the EU Court,by citizens of all member countries.
Even members of the armed forces are court martialled for torture/murder of civilians, during combat.
In sri lanka, massacres happened periodically since independence, and in large numbers in 1971 & in 1987/88/89, & thousands during the 30 year war.No inquiry is even permitted.
    So,stop laughing.

Are they worse than Sinhala Racists things against Tamils from 1956, the racism exhibited to the extent burning Tamils in the Sugar Plantations of Ampara to Murdereing them in 2009 in thousands by bombing even hospitals. and You are puking for the Racism of EU. You have no moral standing to talk about the war crimes in the name of Sinhala racism. You have no guts to talk about the Kangaroo court PSC because you will loose your job at Nation, You are talking about the Hypocracy of the EU.
I not syaing giving Nobel Prize to Barack Obama is right but it is not not even comparable to what is going on here. So do not talk about them

When Malinda Seneviratne was appointed as the chief Editor of Nation I LAUGHED, and still laughing.

How come a man who writes utter stupid and senseless articles become the chief editor of a news papar?

Some would have even puked when they heard it but I just laughed.

      Nimal Fonseka:
Don’t you know who hired this post-colonial turd? The Rajapassas, that’s who and it’s no secret why given his ability to lick boots and other things further north of the footwear!

I bet this guy would sure not puke if he got a free business class air Ticket to Brussels courtsey of the EU. These Rajapaksa suckers have no shame. Why wont he comment on the Rajapaksa Kangaroo to impeach the CJ, it is more current than his invitation to some cocktail party given by the EU Rep.

Everytime Malinda submits an article to CT I read it out of curiosity…and then I laugh and I laugh and I laugh.

ps. I bet after he stopped puking, he wore the EU t-shirt and went for the function the free laptop with him (that MR gave all his bought and paid for journalists), and got drunk on the free cocktails on offer at the EU Mission. :-D

How much more humurous the baila of the PSC in parliment. Most amusing the thovil by kattadiya Weera and kapu Dilan to chase away the Buthaya. Then the drumming reaching a cresendo with the arrival of 16 more yakas to get rid of the Buthaya. Then the final Puja to the Deviyo the next day. The parliment turned into a Pissan Kotuwa.

How nice of you Malinda, to not be duped by these bribing thieves who come here and buy our journalists who are so influential with the public.

We know how patriotic you are. Don’t ever fall for a free t-shirt and other little things ok? Every one has a price, and it should at least be an overseas trip or two, like some others are offering. Isn’t it right Malinda?

We know you. The Kalutara police knew you a long time ago. Keep playing both sides until Gota gets on to you, not before too long we hope!

    Good luck.

      Ado Sudu Banda:
Don’t talk about bribes against your masters when CT has published photographic evidence of you buggers handing out Rs. 500 notes to people to hoot the CJ.

Who is this idiot? Have you been to Europe or the US recently? I too am brown like you, but I feel more freedom in Europe than even my own country which is now taken over by the Rajapaksha bandits. Why dont you open your bloody eyes and see what is happening to the Chief Justics, or what happened to the great war hero General Fonseka. I dont think you are qualified to write about racism in Europe and the US when we have it in abundance in our own land. Although it maybe a different type of racism it is equally unpleasent to say the least. Of course you do have the freedom to write what you want, but dont just do it to please your godfathers.

Writer has a bad habit of bashing the US and western countries, sadly he does not remember why people respect him as a Harvard boy. May be the American education did not help him. That would be tough not to puke.

Please don’t insult our brilliant journalist because he not only works for (and gets paid by)the Rajapaksa family but he went to the same university in the US that George W. Bush attended. Both these should make him a principled and brilliant person, don’t you think?

What more can anyone expect from someone who is paid by the Rajapakse owned rag? Sure, racism exists in most countries – a human failing – but to ignore the excesses of this regime and to have nothing but unadulterated praise for it is beyond even the worst type of ‘racism’. This guy has no shame, as his past record will exemplify – and yet he continues to pander to scum.

This joker has nothing else to write about this week than receiving a good will calender from the EU?? The illegal impeachment, the car races for the princes, the corruption and yeah the racism that exist in this country are just details..we are concerned about racism in the EU and America. If you get a citizenship in a European country today you will have more rights than the Tamils who have livid in this country for 2000 years..The day you elect a Tamil as PM or President let’s talk.
