The Sri Lankan Government is likely to ban the latest edition of the Time Magazine after political Buddhist groups have taken offence at an article appearing on the news magazine’s cover, Colombo Telegraph learns.
The Bodu Bala Sena Group has lobbied the Media Ministry and Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to ensure the offending issue never reaches the news stands in Sri Lanka, Media Ministry sources said.
The cover story on the July 1 issue of Time Magazine is entitled ‘The Face of Buddhist Terror and features Myanmar’s extremist monk Wirathu, who has been accused of stoking anti-Muslim sentiments with his 969 movement, launched in February, which calls on Buddhists to boycott Muslim shops and businesses. There have been at least three anti-Muslim riots this year in central and northern Myanmar, leaving thousands homeless. In June 2012, Buddhist communities in the Rakhine State attacked Rohingya Muslims, leaving 167 people dead and 125,000 people homeless.
Media Ministry Secretary Charitha Herath is reportedly consulting with Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella about how to approach the issue.
According to Ministry sources, the BBS is demanding that Herath consult with the Defence Secretary to tear off the cover story in the magazine before it is allowed on the newsstands in Sri Lanka. If the ban goes ahead, this will be the first time an international magazine is banned in Sri Lanka for a story that has nothing to do with Sri Lanka directly. Sources said the Government is planning to ban the online version of the story as well. The Colombo Telegraph has been unable to reach Charitha Herath for comment.
The Myanmar government has already banned the issue. “The article entitled ‘The Face of Buddhist Terror’ in Time magazine July 1 issue is prohibited from being produced, sold or and distributed in original copy or photocopy in order to prevent further racial and religious conflicts,” Myanmar government spokesman Ye Htut posted on his Facebook page.

In has been picked up by many followers, leading to the anti-Tamil riots, Sinhala Buddhist Monk Somarama Thero killing Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranayake in 1959, and the BBS and so on. Was it in the interest of the Sinhala people? NOT necessarily, it was in the Self Interest of the Monks to keep the Monk hegemony. True in the 5th Century, True today in Mayanamar and Sri Lanka.
5. So what did killer Somarama Thero do before he was hanged? Attain Nirvana, Nibanna or Rebirth? No. He becomes Catholic and be Saved, and go to Heaven. Looks like there is a dire need to get these Monks “Saved” from their own Maraism.

If you want to prove that Sri Lankan Buddhists do not share the hatred of the Burmese Buddhists who slaughtered more than a hundred Muslims, that Sri Lankan Buddhists are unlike other groups, be it Muslims or Christians or Hindus, who spread fear and hatred in the name of religion and nationality, then we must do so in practice.

According to the Guinness book of records Islam is supposed to be the fastest growing religion in the world in terms of conversion Specially, in the west – USA and Europe. Notion that natural progression due to birth in muslim families is simply a tall story concocted by religious zealots.
Why is the West embracing Islam in large numbers? Majority are women. Since, they are disillusioned with the Western way of life. Another reason being after 9.11 people wanted to know more about Islam the majority are intelligent and rational not emotional (Not like in Burma, Sri Lanka and the Indian Sub continent.
The best way to avoid religious intolerance is to study the authentic scriptures. What these monks are doing is they are committing a great injustice to Buddha’s teachings. Buddha never preached hatred. By the government banning TIME magazine which has a worldwide ordiance it will only fuel people’s curiosity about all this halla ballo and more and more people will try to find the truth through internet etc…..Ultimately TRUTH WILL PREVAIL YOU CAN NEVER CONCEAL THE TRUTH.

Interestingly, the BBS, Sinhala Ravaya and Ravana Balaya have the “freedom” to incite violence, attack Churches and Mosques and destroy businesses. But, others don’t have their “freedom” to even call them on it.
In a more sensible country the Customs officers responsible will be questions on their reasoning behind the decision to ban the magazine. SLG is a government without a real leader. The institutes do what every they want. Policy wise they are going in all directions; thus the country goes nowhere.

Time magazine, carrying a cover story comparing the Myanmar Buddhist Monk Wirathu and his organization ‘Buddhist 969’ to the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), has been withheld by customs at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The Myanmar Government has taken steps to ban the July issue of Time, as the cover page of the magazine portrays the Monk with the headline describing him as ‘The Face of Buddhist Terror.’
It is reported that as a result of the activities carried out by the ‘Buddhist 969’ organization against the Muslims of Myanmar, over 140,000 residents of Myanmar have been displaced, and over 200 people have lost their lives.
The Wall Street Journal, meanwhile, reports that most of those who died were Muslims, while the ‘Buddhist 969’ organization carried out attacks against mosques, Muslim businesses and properties, thereafter sticking posters and stickers of their organization over the desecrated property.It is said the article carries comparisons between the BBS and the Myanmar Buddhist organization, and has also cited similarities between self-immolation attempts by monks. The Myanmar Government claims the magazine has been banned ‘in order to prevent the recurrence of racial and religious riots’.
When Ceylon Newspapers queried about the BIA Customs withholding the magazines, Minister of Mass Media and Information, Keheliya Rambukwella said he was unaware of the Customs having done such a thing, and said he would look into the matter and then comment on it.

They even toy with idea of being well behaved, trying to hide the fact that they are second class citizens. After all if we are to be real buddhist we must not be againts such claims but rather read for ourself and if this is true every buddhist for the sake of real buddhism should denounce the acts of this wretched monk! The monk had allegedly assaulted an individual at a temple in Labuduwa recently while the victim, who was in critical condition, succumbed to injuries last night.
The deceased is said to be a 44-year-old father of two and was a former Police Constable (PC).

While Burma because of its rich resources has had international interference from after independence so the Bengali’s just crossed the border as if it’s their land.
