The Family Curse

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“….it is the President who has solutions to all these problems. He quelled terrorism and it is he who could solve problems of this sort…. Everybody should present these problems and the President will solve it. Nobody else can solve them.” – Gotabhaya Rajapaksa (Daily Mirror – 2.7.2014)

Jean Lacouture wrote that André Gide’s cry, ‘Families, I detest you’ is “a slogan that ought to be framed and hung in every presidential palace in the Third World”[i].

If Mahinda Rajapaksa wins the next round of national elections, the Rajapaksa dynasty will become a fait accompli, barring a miracle. And Brother Gotabhaya will play an even more strategic role in the new administration than he did in the two previous ones.

mahinda_gota colombotelegraphIn his recent Daily Mirror interview[ii] Gotabhaya Rajapaksa reiterated his readiness to enter electoral politics, if invited by Brother Mahinda. And with characteristic arrogance, he stated, “I can do much better than many of these politicians currently holding office”. (A digression: It is an open secret that SLFP old-timers worked hard to deprive Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s nominee Udaya Gammanpila of the No. 1 position on the Colombo preference votes list at the PC polls. Hopefully a similar effort will be made, if Gotabhaya Rajapaksa contests from Colombo?)

Soon after his Family won the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2010, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa gave an exclusive interview to The Island[iii]. In it he declared that the new government “should be prepared to thwart a fresh attempt by separatists operating abroad to throw a lifeline to the LTTE”. He also emphasised the ‘pivotal importance of the judiciary, particularly the Attorney General’s Department, in supporting the government’s efforts to suppress terrorism’.

Barely a month later, Brother Mahinda took over the Attorney General’s Department. Less than three years later, Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake was impeached for refusing clear the way for Brother Basil’s Divineguma Bill, extra-constitutionally. She was replaced by a trusted legal henchman of Brother Gotabhaya. The subsequent appointments to the Supreme Court included a legal acolyte of Brother Basil who reportedly played a key role during the impeachment witch-trial.

The upper judiciary was thus brought to heel.

And the spectre of the resurrected Tiger became the ubiquitous sword and a shield of the second Rajapaksa administration.

Oracle Gotabhaya and the Unending Enemies

What is the main justification for continued Rajapaksa rule? That the Siblings defeated the LTTE and brought peace to Sri Lanka (thus the Rajapaksa need to monopolise the credit for victory by demonising Gen. Fonseka).

But as the public memory of the victory wanes, the raison d’être for familial rule and dynastic succession begins to lose lustre and legitimacy. It is significant that there were hardly any popular celebrations of the fifth anniversary of the ‘V Day’. There were no religious observances, blood donation campaigns, banners or other familiar signs of mass commemoration. In fact had it not been for the official celebration, the ‘V Day’ would have been just another day, even for most Sinhalese.

As memory wanes, new reasons must be created to justify the continued rule of Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brothers. The Sinhala public must be convinced that post-LTTE, the country remains at peril and only the Rajapaksas can save the motherland from a fate worse than even the LTTE. And as his brother’s Defence Czar, it is the responsibility of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to come up with suitable new threats, which can be overcome only by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Enter Islamic terrorists. Had Sri Lanka a Sikh minority, it would have been Sikh terrorists.

Recently Gotabhaya Rajapaksa himself assured the new Indian government that there are no Islamic terrorists in Sri Lanka. But that bogey is necessary for domestic consumption – to browbeat Muslims into submission and to prevent the Sinhalese from abandoning the Kurakkan shawl.

Asked about the role of BBS in the Aluthgama violence, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa sought refuge in the bogey of Islamic terrorism: “If you go through a recent speech I made at the Kothelawala Defence Academy, you will see that I spoke of various potential threats to the country and one of it was Islamic terrorism. I spoke of the possibility. Even at that time many Muslims politicians irresponsibly tried to blame me without understanding what I was talking about or the realities.”[iv]

Is Mr. Rajapaksa, like the BBS et al, claiming that the violence in Aluthgama happened because of ‘Islamic terrorism’?

In the KDA Speech[v], Gotabhaya Rajapaksa characterised Sri Lanka as a country confronted by a variety of threats and enemies. He made particular mention of Tamil extremists (national and international), left-wing extremists, Islamic extremists, criminal extremists, media extremists, Western extremists, anti-democratic extremists and irresponsible extremists.

A few months after Gotabhaya Rajapaksa made this speech, his brother’s government moved against ‘Tamil extremists’ by imposing a wholesale ban on Tamil Diaspora Organisations and activists.

Is Aluthgama the second step in that process? Was the anti-Muslim violence an attempt to counter ‘Islamic terrorists’?

Gotabhaya Rajapaksa laments the unfairness of connecting him to the BBS simply because he once attended a BBS function. Has he forgotten the speech he made which was nothing less than a ringing endorsement of the BBS’ work? He said that he decided to attend the event “after realising its timely importance” and emphasised that “these Buddhist clergy who are engaged in a nationally important task should not be feared or doubted by anyone”[vi].

So what is the ‘nationally important task’ the BBS is engaged in? Taking on Islamic terrorism? Was that what Aluthgama was all about? Incidentally, Aluthgama seems to have become another occupied zone. Security personnel in uniform and civvies are reportedly thick on the ground, some of them photographing visitors to the area on mobile phones and listening to conversations, causing a ‘fear-psychosis’[vii].

Once the next round of national elections is won and the ‘Islamic terrorist’ bogey loses its efficacy, will the Siblings take on the other ‘extremists’ mentioned by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in his KDA speech[viii]. Who will be targeted after the Tamils and the Muslims? Will it be the JVP and its offshoots, the ‘leftwing extremists’ “involved in previous insurgencies (who)…are trying to reorganise within Sri Lanka and mobilise people to once again take up extreme left wing causes”? Or will it be the media, “….subversive elements with ulterior motives (who)….portray demands by sections of the public to showcase the country in a negative light”? Or will it be just any opponent, charged with not exercising “their democratic freedoms with responsibility”?

On the night of the 2010 Presidential Election, armed soldiers sealed off the Colombo hotel Candidate Sarath Fonseka and other opposition leaders were staying in. Barely two weeks later, Gen. Fonseka was arrested under military law. In the subsequent months and years, the Rajapaksas moved with single-minded determination to subvert and destroy all alternate power-centres. If the Rajapaksas win the next round of national elections (and they will, if the Opposition fails to unite), the coming years will see an even greater concentration of power (not just political but also economic, religious and socio-cultural) in Rajapaksa hands.

And the country will be saddled with a new bane.

President Mahinda and Minister Basil are bad enough.

But Prime Minister Gotabhaya?

All what you say is Gospel Truth. But, the fact is how many of the Village folks will read your material. They are been brain washed and militarized by the MARA and GORA and it’s like pouring water on duck’s back. Even my comment will be picked up by some of the brainless idiots and commented on, as they are being paid and bribed just to do that. Just like the MARA has appointed US companies to whitewash his dirty linen in the Big Apple.
We are doomed as a Nation and only divine assistance can save us from the destruction brought upon us by this marauding murderers. People should have known the character of MARA when he swindled the Tsunami Funds. They say a wrong choice in your life once will haunt you for the rest of you lives, that is exactly what has happened to our Nation.

Thrice Blessed and many times cursed, I guess.

Spot on Madam Thisaranee. Brilliant as usual.
Would you please also do a good analysis of how the Rajapaksa brothers have MILITARIZED, destroyed and attacked Buddhism and Democracy in Sri Lanka – from within – to the point that Sri Lankan Buddhism is considered a violent JOKE throughout the world?

There is a need for a proper analysis of the DISASTER that is Buddhism in the Miracle of Modayas today. Vatarekha Vijitha thero and the BBS GAG are a metaphor of what the Rajapakse brothers have done to Buddhism in Sri Lanka today.
Politicization, Militarization and Empty Buddhist rituals cover up and mask the absence of practice of what the Buddha Taught. Sri Lankan “Buddhism” is an international JOKE today and an insult to the Buddha!

Time for Sobith Thero to take the lead in cleaning up and reforming the The Buddhist Sangha establishment which is corrupt and over fed and greedy and politicized and MILITARIZED. After that he can run as joint opposition candidate for President.
Chandrika Bandaranaiyake Kumaratunge is the only one capable of defeating Jarapassa in the land of Sinhala MODAYAS at this time.
Now Sobith Thero needs to put his own Buddhist house in order. As it is said render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and unto god the things that are gods. Buddhism should not be politicized and militarized. Extreme politicization and militarization of Buddhism has destroyed Buddhist culture and practice from within; The needs to be further analyzed and there needs to be REFORM of the Sanga, and the old Mahanayakkas who are corrupt and live in luxury and drive in MERCS need to be de-throned and new ones who actually practice what the Buddha taught be elected NOT appointed.

Is there no other alternate solution?

Consequences for Rajapakse & Co., not winning the next round of national elections will be catastrophic. Only thing that can protect them is their diplomatic immunity in office. If this is taken away by the people in a free and fair elections, they will not have protection and may have to claim asylum in Dalada Maligawa or hide in Pirabakaran’s bunker resort.

Computer gilmart will keep them in power. All the devious tricks will be tried by them to be in power.

Take my word. Conclusions in elections are foregone.

What is the issue with having a dynasty if that dynasty understands the principles of good governance, accepts them and is competent in their application and governs on the basis of the constitution, the rule of law and accountability and the practice of human rights?

Please get your knickers untwisted, walk straight and talk straight without adding to the confusion. The problem is the failure on the part of this and many preceding regimes to establish democratic process, uphold the rule of law and integrate the practice of human rights into whatever was passed off as culture on this island.

You are beginning to sound like a propagandist working for regime change. A regime change will not address the fundamental issue which is the fact that the majority of the inhabitants of this island have no clue as to how to govern themselves and hence have been reduced to killing each other every few decades. Governments simply compete for power and DO NOT have the competence to establish systems and processes of good governance. This task has to be accomplished by those who know how this can be done. It cannot be done by those who simply stir up the already muddy water. These mud stirring pets of fisherpersons do no more than facilitate the fishing and I am being told that there is much to be fished for on this island.

Appe Aanduwa has been fine tuned and sharpened over 66 years to its climax: Appe Maha Aanduwa:

Let’s have Rajapakse thuma for the third time too. Why? Because:

Everybody should present the problems and the President Mahinda will solve it. Nobody else can solve them like he does.”

He solved the Tamil problem of Tamils in Mullivaaikkaal for ever!

Now BBS has brought the Muslim problem to the Lord, and He has the ready solution: Remember, He said after the war that there are no minorities in Sri Lanka. Yes, what he meant heart to heart is that there will be no minorities in the future:

There will only be Sinhala Buddhists and traitors. Choice is of course yours. How gracious he is to give a choice! But, he didn’t give the choice to innocent Tamils in Vanni. He sent them all to the Heaven en masse.

Show Muslims the Muslim-vaaikkaal solution just like he showed Tamils the Mullivaaikkaal solution.

Men from far and wide are learning from the Ranaviru Sinhala forces as to how to solve terrorism and minority problem militarily: Kill them all mercilessly.

Mahinda has the “Final solution: for all problems just like Hitler had for the Jews of Europe.

Get Dayan the piper to tell the Sinhala peasants: Mahinda Maha-viru for president.

    Heil Mahinda the Great!

MR is going to win presidential election by hook or crook.
He is going for the 80% budhhist votes. What he needs is just 51% of the buddhist votes. Once he wins presidential election general election is going to be landslide win.

With all news media under MR, and elections commissioner under his control UNP had to get 70% people support in order 51% of votes nuetralise the MR advantage of news and his presidential powers.

Whatever people blame MR & Gota for BBS saga, BBS will bring in more buddhist votes to MR.

Sri Lanka, slowly but surely, slides into its own self-destruction.
Very soon the country will be turned into a battlefield with the Chinese, Pakistanis, Indians and who else all getting physically involved in armed conflict. Buddhist priests, from the top to the middle level street activists, have made peaceful coexistence with
minorities nearly impossible. India is slowly being turned into a
“mortal enemy” India will be forced to use Kachaiteevu, the Fishermen’s dispute, the China/Pakistani issue etc., against us. Sri Lankans of the future will curse the coming of Mahinda Chinthana as the beginning of the end of peace for the Sinhalese.

Sinhala people who voted for more racist regimes will keep voting the same way: Nobody can stop it; they choose on the basis of emotion.

What is the emotion at hand? Who is for us and who is for ‘others’. Easy for the politician to exploit, and exploit they will as they have been doing for 66 years.

Who cares if it is Mahinda or another demon, they will all be the same for ‘others’: This is what Mahavamsa and Mahanama wanted implemented. They are implementing Mahanama’s project faithfully.

People will write this and that in vain while the Mahanama bandwagon rolls on.

I have a book written in 1939 which gives the official population statistics of 1931: The ratio of Sinhala speakers to Tamil speakers was about 2:1, i.e., only about 67% were Sinhalese! Compare with the figures now. Facts corroborate my thesis. Aren’t Sinhalese clever?

Soon we will have monolithic Sinhala Buddhist Sorry Lanka.

What they want they will get.

King Kekille also had everyone present their problems to him and gave them solutions. Of course he had Andaray to lend some comedy when things got hectic.

GR can keep sending smoke signals about his intentions to his sister in law and bretheren, through the media. Shiranthi Rajapakse is hell bent in preventing any of the Rajapakse brothers from stepping any closer to the throne. Maternal instincts, one might say.

The anti-Muslim atrocities served the purpose of raising the specter of the ‘others’ in the country amongst the illiterate and clueless. These are the people the Rajapakse’s are banking on to turn up en-masse when elections are called.

It also woke the Muslims up! Now the game plan is to repair building and do some cosmetic surgery to the domestic and international images.
Nothing like having meetings and photo ops with selected persons to show the world that we are moving on. There are plenty of shysters and racketeers amongst the Muslims who are more than happy to oblige and turn up for these ‘meetings’.

Like with the UNHCR, things will drag on until Uva elections can be put away. Remember Watareka Thero has quite a bit of influence in that area. So, his credibility was given the Rajapakse treatment.

Then comes the bigger elections and the BBS and JHU will play their chosen roles. There are not many Tamil and Christian businesses on the scale of Muslim owned ones. There are may be, but they are far and few. In the North, it may be different but in the rest of the country, it is the Muslim owned businesses that stick out.

Look out for the occasional rape rumor against an owner. Or the cheating accusation against a shop keeper. These will keep happening.

It is an absolute disgrace that the officer Corp serving in the Sri Lankan armed forces are so rotten that they have sworn off the oath they took when enlisting – To Protect the people of Sri Lanka. Other than the cop who refused orders in Aluthgama, I have not heard or seen anything about a refusal by a commander to carry out what was illegal.

Not a single media story about that! That is how messed up we are as a people and country. The only way change can happen is WHEN WE WANT CHANGE TO HAPPEN AND ARE PREPARED TO DO SOMETHING FOR IT. If we keep wishing that someone else will do it for us, guess what, it will not happen.

It comes to my mind how Gotabhaya Rajapaksa testified at the courts in SF case hearing. In response to the comment that “Surely the defense secretary must have a system in place to retrieve messages”, the man paused and ardently pulled out his mobile phone, checked his voice mail or pretended to), and arrogantly responded “No messages!”. The judge tucked his tail between his hinds and swallowed his own court ordinances of contempt. This drama at courts remains in the minds of many, which was all but a clear sign of the bastardization of the Sri Lankan judiciary to come. What are the chances that the Rajapaksas will “win” the forthcoming elections? 100%. What are the chances that the condition worsens before it starts getting better, into perhaps towards the mid century (optimistically)?, about 80%, that is unless a public unrest takes law unto their own hands from that of Rajapaksas. Reportedly, a conversation among three mid-level career politicians was overheard that in deed it was Prabhakaran’s leadership that Sri Lanka needed in the long run in place of Rajapaksas’. This was rhetorically of course, but this is the sentiment that might give rise to an eventual public movement which the Rajapaksa’s just might allow the growth of to create the “Next Enemy” in the Egyptian style. for that to happen, it is of their best interest to secure the longevity of the JVP and fan the slumbering UNP by protecting the leadership of Ranil.

Reading all the comments it clearly shows the hatred towards Rajapakse Family. Why? The reason in my mind is, Rajapakse family made a multicultural and multi religious society which was living peacefully even during the war (other than few terrorist and armed forces related issues) was turned into a hate mongering inter communal hated society within a very short period, for the survival of Rajapakse family.

One day when another government is formed a public inquiry should be held to bring all these stupid guys to face justice.

But will the military take over the country before that?

I am sick of that photograph.

Every time I see it I imagine the brothers being celotaped tightly together, face to face, stomach to stomach, hip to hip, hands and legs left free, being forced to climb the 13 steps, the necks of Mara and Gora looped tightly together by one rope, and gently lowered into the thin air below. And let them dangle and dance long enough for all their victims to witness and release a deep sigh of relief.

Mr Gotabhaya Rajapakse has been an astute student of George W. Bush who used the fear of an undefined enemy (the endless war on terror) to stay in power for two terms, despite lying to the public and declaring a very unwise war and destroying precious human life and property. So the student also vanquishes the real terrorists, creates and unseen enemy and uses the religious extremists (BBS) like the ultraconservatives in the US to ensure continuity. Today there is an extreme polarisation in America resulting in an almost paralyzed government as a result of this miscommunication exercise. Coupled with the constant fear of Buddhism vanishing from the island (real or imagined)the public will be faced again with the issue of voting for the known (even as the US voted for GWB)or for an unknown and taking the chance that the fear becomes a reality.
Despite the words of Lord Buddha in Dhammapada (Stanza 184)”…. one who does harm others cannot be a samana, only those who do not.” – we allow the the robed individuals to carry on their acts of hatred in direct violation of the precious dhamma. One has to seriously ask the question, is it the dagobas, the structures of our ancients that is Buddhism or our own behaviours – If one doesn’t behave in the spirit of the Dhamma eschewing violence and embracing tolerance, is that the Buddhism we so preciously guard? Perhaps this is what the voting public should be shown, it is not who guards the structures but who lives the teaching – should be the next leader.

It detractors are feeling the jitters along with their white masters. Yes there is absolutely no doubt about the winner of the next Presidential election and subsequent elections before and after that. The majority voters decide who shall govern the country and their choice is a foregone conclusion. No amount of resolutions, investigation panels going to change the mind of the people of this land. Yes they are not stupid to listen to Colombo Modayas or their idols up west when it comes to election time. There are no absolute clean politicians and the question is who is better suited to rule the country out of the available choices. Yes they have an idea as to who stood by the country and who has a backbone to stand by the people and also they witness tangible improvements in the country when deciding the outcome. The winner is crystal clear

This is quite some way of doing it for sure! Keep the wings of the good clipped thus you become the lesser of evils, or silence all voices but who sing your glory. The constitution, and the law and order should rule the country – NOT A PERSON! This is supposed to be a democracy for heavens sake, and not a monarchy running a law of its own perverted whims stashing away the majority of country’s wealth turning themselves into sultans, while holding onto citizenship of “white master’s land” to seek refuge when if the seats heat-up. If they are such opposed polarities, I wonder why the “White masters” don’t revoke their citizenship! You might try to explain, but some part of it I believe remains in the underground tunnel between the temple trees and the American embassy.

Sickening… See the other related article on Lanka Truth.

“President’s expenses go up by Rs.350 million
    ———————————————

An additional amount of Rs.346,464,210 has been allocated for the expenditure of the President for the period January to April this year.

This is in addition to the Rs.8,569,170,000 allocated from the last budget to the President.

Accordingly, the total expenditure for the President this year has risen to Rs.8,915,634,210. The additional allocation is revealed in the mid year report issues by the Ministry of Finance.

As such, the daily expenses of the President which was Rs.23,477,178 goes up to Rs. 24,426,395.

Once Minister Bandula Gunawardene, a former tuition master of Economics estimated that a family of four could live for a month with Rs.2500 and statistics show 40% of the population in Sri Lanka earns less than US$2 for a day.”

It’s time to ignore the antics of MR, BR, GR and NR. There will come a time when they cannot decide on whom to handover. BBS, etc., etc. will be available to cut off MR & NR due to the ‘Christian’ influence in their household. Ultimately, it will be a cakewalk for GR. Better for BR to get back to his family in USA. Even before the LTTE decimation, TG was anti-Mahinda Rajapakse and was PRO-LTTE.

TG is still anti-Mahinda Rajapakse. It look sometimes, she/he has some personal vendetta against Mahinda Rajapakse and is determined not to give up as long as Mahinda Rajapakse is the president or more.

When Mahinda Rajapakse has so many this kind of enemies, I don’t think Mahinda Rajapakse can do much.

TG is not the only one. There are many like that who want to fulfil their agenda at the expense of Mahinda Rajapakse. TG is only anti-Sinhala – and anti-Mahinda Rajapakse. Others have their own agenda. This is mostly Tamils, politicians who lost to Mahinda rajapakse, two major foreign religions, western countries and some indian politicians who want it their way.

See if these democratic people were citizens of a western country and would criticize the govt in this way, they would be arrested, where ever they are in the world, for terrorist and anti-govt activities.

Sri lanka is too democratic by allowing these people to behave like bulls in the China shop.

      JS,
No doubt you are a staunch supporter of Rajapaksha
family rule. Therefore I won’t blame you for not getting
your facts right. Buddhism as a religion was spreaded
around by another emperor just like all other religions
got postalized in Europe, Asia and other places. That’s
why all religions are more or less equal when it comes
to “spreaded around” as a revealed truth. If you ask
100 Srilankans about Buddhism and lord Buddha, large
percentage of them would say that it is a domestic religion
and perhaps lord Buddha was a Sinhala prince before he
became the enlightened one. It is imperative that society which
is full of Jim softy is needed to continue with criminal family
rule in SL. Credulous society is the prerequisite for survival
of a dictators. BBS, Sihala Urumaya, Ravana Balaya and other
religious/racial oganizations are needed in achieving and
maintaining such a society. Rajapakshas very well understand
      this very important fact.

      Jim nutty:
Your stupidity is only confirmed when you say such things as, “See if these democratic people were citizens of a western country and would criticize the govt in this way, they would be arrested, where ever they are in the world, for terrorist and anti-govt activities.”
Are you in a competition with yourself to top every stupidity with another stupidity?

    TG:

If Mahinda Rajapaksa wins the next round of national elections, the Rajapaksa dynasty will become a fait accompli, barring a miracle. And Brother Gotabhaya will play an even more strategic role in the new administration than he did in the two previous ones.

*** You have got it all wrong. It is not a question if Mahintha wins but the size of majority. Gotha who was a petrol station attendant in the US before he tried his hand as a delivery driver. He was a failed businessman and luck will have it MR was elected leader of SLFP and he invited his brother Gotha back to run his campaign for President. Gotha is the driving force behind all the Criminal activities and the head of the AXIS OF EVIL and he has reached the top of the mountain and there is only one way back and that is downwords.
All he needs is a Gentle PUSH and like Jack & Gill he will come down tumbling after the UN inquiry.

Gothas house in the US which he bought with looted money from his Criminal activities in Sinhala Lanka was raided by US authorities and there is a FATWA on Gotha and he cant escape the Long arm of US justice.
