The Field Marshal

By Ramesh Fernando –

Ramesh Fernando

Since the tragic events on Sunday, I’ve chosen to remain silent, as I did not see any point in offering my views belatedly. But, at this time. I wish to write about this one man, who could have, and still could, change the course of events that unfolded, and are to unfold; Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, RWP RSP VSV USP psc. I think from my direct and vicarious association with him, I can shed some light on this oft misunderstood, yet admired, complex personality.

As you may be aware, he was the first officer from an infantry unit (frontline fighting regiment), the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, to become Army Commander. In the past, the role of Commander has by-and-large been occupied by officers from the Artillery, Armour, and Field Engineer regiments. Even among infantryman, FM Fonseka stood out, as he was constantly on the battlefield from the inception of the war, and served with distinction in all areas of conflict within Sri Lanka. He does not require a map of Sri Lanka, it is all committed to rote.

Fonseka

As an Officer, he held himself to the highest standards. The manner in which he maintained his person, and conducted himself, even out of duty, was unimpeachable, so much so that very few officers could attain his almost ruthlessly high level of discipline and professionalism. As he has disclosed, he left his Advanced Level examination early to go home and shine his cadetting boots. During the 2.5 years of the final humanitarian operation, he barely slept 4 hours a day, and he was a constant nightmare to his field commanders as he signalled them every 2 hours to get updates as to their progress. He truly detested “suck ups”; I am aware of a incident where he thoroughly reprimanded a senior army officer for delivering a carton of cigarettes to him when he had only asked for one pack.

When referring to his most outstanding trait, his leadership skills, you may be aware that he was the only Commander to have a firm belief that terrorism could be fully eradicated without compromise. Prior to him taking over Command, the governments and the military focused on limited objective operations, such as Wadamarachchi and Riviresa. No one really had a vision of how terrorism could be defeated with finality. As Commander, he placed the most apposite officers in the appropriate positions, and ensured that they fulfilled their duty, or vacated office. He set objectives, and rarely accommodated excuses for non-performance. Without such firmness, a war cannot be fought and won. However, he would never allow a subordinate to be blamed for following his orders. Gone are the days when wars were a gentleman’s game. It is important to state here that I am personally aware that he frequently took steps to ensure that HIS operational directives complied with the national laws and also the laws of armed conflict and humanitarian laws. It is for this reason that he remains the only senior officer who demands, without any qualms, an inquiry into war crimes, domestic or international.

Many may not have noticed this, but he is the only politician to continuously state that the IGP should not be removed for this debacle, though the entire political leadership and country are ready to hang the IGP. The responsibility in this matter ultimately must borne by none other that the Commander-in-Chief, Minister for Defence and the Minister for Law and Order; President Maithripala Sirisena.

Now, he is frequently in trouble for expressing his opinion without varnish. His character is such that he would not hesitate to even give the President and Prime Minister of the country a earful. He places absolutely no stock in consensus and popular views. I feel that we should appreciate leaders with such curt honesty more than the many others whose words are dripping with honey, sarcasm and falsities. He is absolutely untainted from corruption, or else he would not be complaining about his military pension amounting to just over Rs. 50,000 a month.

Many are blaming the current failure in intelligence on the arrest and detention of a few intelligence officers. Please realise that these officers are not being prosecuted for defending us, but for abusing their positions for personal gain and/or for political reasons; in one case, to abduct several innocent youth and obtain ransom money. Intelligence is important, but it is more important that they themselves are subject to the law, else they turn their powers against the people.

The country is in need of a strong leader to secure the defence of the country. If one reads Lee Quan Yew’s book on ‘The Singapore Story’, the former leader relates how he accorded first priority to defence and law enforcement, as without a secure country there cannot be investment and economic development.

It is not often that a country is blessed with an Arthur Wellesley, a Horatio Nelson, a George Washington, or a Sarath Fonseka. We need a doer, not a bunch of jokers.

    Dear R.F.

I agree with practically everything you have stated in this article, except this one phrase: “During the 2.5 years of the final humanitarian operation………” That is a bit of a stretch, isn’t it?”

      Ramesh Fernando,

      Re: The Field Marshall,

      Thanks for the write up.

The President who is the Minister of Defense and Police, did not want to appoint Sarath Fonseka, for any of the posts for which he was most competent, and we lost 360 lives and suffered considerable economic damage, on top of the Oct 26th coup.

Then of course BP Rajapaksa incarcerated him for 2 years.

The people should agitate for Sarath Fonseka to be President, Minister if Defense and Police, and replace the current Sevalaya and Traitor.

      Well said Ramesh.
President, MR, and other opposition members are blaming the govt. for security failures because most of the security officials are in jail.
As far as I could see the Security Unit has given the timely warnings to the govt. So, it has done it’s duty effectively.
Isn’t it a fact that some of the security officials are in jail because they have carried out illegal activities?
Today, the President has blamed the govt. for putting them in jail.
I never knew that the govt. is carrying out duties and responsibilities of the Judges. But in Sri Lanka anything can happen!!!!

No One Should Be Above The Law of The Land.
Problem is most of our politicians DO NOT comply with the Law of the Land.
How do these people explain jailing Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka (the top security personnel in the country in 2010) and some army officials for exercising Fonseka’s democratic right to contest against MR.

““During the 2.5 years of the final humanitarian operation………” That is a bit of a stretch, isn’t it?”

Even if it was humanitarian operation, it was carried out by Hindians by keeping a tight control over every aspect of the war.

Being a little islander Ramesh Fernando should be allowed to glorify whichever way he chooses to.

It is time to bring to an end this lunacy of this man forcing him to the title of Field Marshall from a weak and illiterate Sirisena unfamiliar with military history or tradition. This is usually a recognition given to an outstanding soldier in a large and important army. Among previous holders have been Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington centuries ago. The huge US Army did not confer this title on any of their men although Gen. Douglas MaCarthur was made one by the Phillipines Govt in the mid-1930s. The world continues to laugh at that madman Idi Amin who promoted him to the title.

I am told by close ex-army sources Fonseka suffers a mania where he dreams to be saluted by the seniors in the Indian army at some future time he expects to manipulate a visit from them. The Indian Army has had such men as Gen. Cariappa and Sam Manekshaw as Field Marshall’s in their huge army. The present Indian Army is unlikely to allow their men to be vilified by an imposter visiting them with a suspect title. Imagine a nondescript wriggling him to the highest levels of the tiny Maldivian army and then calling him Field Marhshall in the illusion leaders of larger armies will salute him. That seems to be Fonseka’s mental issue.

    Yes…..
    You are totally correct.
Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka is the Hero who could eradicate any type of violence and terrorism.
He is the commander who truly promised and discharged his duty well.

Sirisena is a ungrateful and fearful man who has no any human quality.

Even though numerous time Field Marshal name was selected to confirm as a Minister of Law and Order Sirisena rejected and refused to do so.

Sirisena does not want to restore and establish Law and Order in our country.
He just wants to have a fun and travel around the world with his Jayanthi.

People must assemble and throw him out.
Sirisena is not capable and able to govern our country.

Everyone must urge Field marshal to take over this position to secure people and the country.

“As an Officer, he held himself to the highest standards. “.

      Is it so?
Ask him what was he doing between 1987 and 1991 along with Gota the greatest military man under Janaka Perera?

      He is a public racist.
Here is an excerpt from his interview:
“I strongly believe that this country belongs to the Sinhalese but there are minority communities and we treat them like our people,” he says.
“We being the majority of the country, 75%, we will never give in and we have the right to protect this country.
“We are also a strong nation … They can live in this country with us. But they must not try to, under the pretext of being a minority, demand undue things.”

      Read between the lines.
He inadvertently admits being the majority he has more stupid Kallathonies on his side than rest of the people put together.

This shameless war criminal, the owner of the country went to North and east begging for votes.
On the Eve of January 2010 presidential elections he promised to drag the clan all the way to Galle Face Green. Did you find out why?

Soma, I fully agree with you and what Field Marshal(FM) purported to have said. There is nothing racist about in comments attributed to the FM but that the country belongs to everybody who wants to live peacefully. It is not a secret that since 1920s renowned Tamil public racists as with the Ramanadan brothers, Chelva, Sunda, GG Ponna and later LTTE Terrorists were demanding “undue privileges”ie. a landmass disproportionate to their numbers and exclusive to their tribe, 50-50 voting rites and more. FM Fonseka is correct to point that out. The new Terrorists have their allegiance to IS, as did the closet terrorists who now represent the Tamils had their allegiance to the racist LTTE masters. The new Terrorists (as did the LTTE scum including their apologists) can be dealt with swiftly by FM Fonseka or any other commander of the forces if they are empowered to do so by the president. Until MR, no other president thought it was possible to deal a death blow to LTTE terrorist scum. The country needs the likes of FM Fonseka, MR and GR again, and soon and President Sirisena will act the same way as did MR.

Sarath Fonseka is the greatest hero who successfully led Sri Lanka’s war against LTTE eventually decimating the most dangerous terrorist group. However, gullible Sri Lankans are so unfortunate to be misled by GoTa – MaRa camp into believing that it was GoTa who led the final war. GoTa in fact is a traitor since he abandoned the battlefield at its height seeking greener pastures in US.

Yahapalanaya suckers should realize now that had SF been given the ministry of defence portfolio, this latest carnage could have been easily avoided. SiRa has now become Maru Sira of Sri Lanka for not allowing SF to be the decorated Minister of Defence.

The Hindians let Rajabaksas gloat about the war victory which they could easily have appropriated to themselves.

He may be a good military leader, but will not be able to deliver development in a higher position. He would be a good addition to the defence establishment and the National Security Council NSC. Therefore the decision in 2010 was correct.

    Ramesh Fernando,

Singapore story is not just based on defense but also on law enforcement and fairness to all communities. A similar phiolsophy exists in Switzerland. Both countries are prospering in peace.

For the several riots against Tamils were there any law enforcement or recourse to justice? Those atrocities went unpunished,.

After 2009 there were several instances of Sinhalese instigated anti-Muslim riots, burning houses and businesses of Muslims. Was the rule of enforced and punishment meted out to the perpetrators?

The whole world knows that these atrocities against the Tamil and Muslim minorities were committed by the Sinhalese – aided and abetted by the governments at those times.

Coming back to the Singapore story, it was not based on defense and law enforcement only.

Rule of law is rigorously applied to the majority Chinese, and minority Malays and Tamils equally and impartially.

Most important of all, Singapore provides equal opportunities and a piece of the national cake to all the communities. No language, or religion is given the foremost place, and of course religion is not taught in government run schools.

Singapore is a united house, but Sri Lanka is a house divided by the Sinhalese rulers since independence. A house divided will fall they say, as we can see is happening over the last seventy years. The society can’t even get ample supply of water and electricity.

Only when the majority Sinhalese realize that ONLY by uniting all the communities and treating them equally and fairly the country can achieve peace, prosperity and progress.

Not amount of “defense” is going to change the “Sri Lanka story” tragic as it is.

During the second world war (WW II) there was one exceptional general that comes to mind when we talk about SF. His name comes to mind not only because of his exceptional military achievements like SF, the man was always known to get in the way of politicians due to his straight talk and bluntness.
    .
That General is none other than General George S Patton. Patton came from a long line of generals in the US army. He was the game changer, the trump card the Americans had against the might of the German Army and their Panzer Tanks. American Sherman tanks were not a match one on one to the Panzers, but with the brilliance of Patton, they were defeated in North Africa, Sicily, and finally Ardennes one of the greatest tank battles in history.
    .
Romel and the Gremans had only respect for Patton, but it was a different story in his own quarters.
Each time I see Field Marshal SF he reminds me of General George Patton, the best and most daring commander the US Army had in WW II.
    .
The US had another SF types in the gulf war I, he was General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. he was the commander of all coalition forces forces in the gulf war, commanded over 750,000 troops and assets from 35 countries. He too had similar traits of both SF and George Patton. And as you expected he was not very popular after the war.
    .
General Patton died shortly after WW II, and General Norman Schwarzkopf too is late, but SF is here.
We need to use his superior intellect and experience to help save Sri Lanka once again from the vultures that are circling our country ready swoop down and grab from all angles.

He is also the only one to remind that in other countries the governments would have (to) resigned and this is not the first time he put the country before self or party. In 2002 he refused to dismantle the high-security zones in Jaffna and actually extended them which was vital for the subsequent victory. His appointment as Jaffna commander in 2000 was insisted by Gen. Janaka Perera after the fall of Elephant Pass in 2000 .
However, if Fonseka had just resigned as CDF and remained critical of the post war government allowing the citizens to grasp what he foresaw without contesting against a seasoned politician riding the crest of popularity, he would be the president today and we would have had a far better political culture.
People from ‘minority’ communities have to be near perfect to succeed, one from the majority has to be just good enough. Hence, whilst the defence secretary in March 2009 declared to the world that the military were shelling hospitals, (a charge denied by the military itself) as they were terror sympathizers as opposed to civilian shields did not spur the pseudo-patriots, an off the record statement about the awareness of a report about shooting of two tigers with white flags did.

Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka (SF) was an officer par excellence, as a Military officer, but in my opinion he degraded himself and his public image as a politician in his 2nd career life.
He was subject to ridicule and disdain , when another member of parliament from the same party that entered in to parliament translated his newly acquired salutation as Field Marshall to that of a “Vel Vidande” in Sinhala, which roughly translates to a chief farmer who decides on the time schedule of whose paddy field get what time slot in the flow of irrigated water schemes.

In fact I also had my concerns about SF since he as a politician never showed his true colors all this while being in the government, UNTIL, yes until he made a “No holds barred” speech in parliament early this week during the 2nd session of Parliament after the Easter Sunday massacre.
SF’s speech was abrupt, to-the-point, and very frank, when he fearlessly accused of all the political leaders of the Country, on how each of them had defaulted in their duties.
Take a Bow, Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka, for being who are at long last.

May the force be with you always !

The very same army he commanded, appointed a Court Martial, which tried and sentenced him to imprisonment for three years.
He did not appeal against the verdict.

He was dragged out by his legs out of the hotel he was staying in, and taken to jail when he contested the post of President.

No other country has a “Field Marshal” with such a history.

Isn’t this the same man whom you initially accused of killing 40000 innocent Tamils?

One of the biggest scandals of the conspiracy of the International (Zionist) community to gain control of Sri Lanka was the sponsoring of this man for President in 2010. Months after those horrible charges were made, the same was presented as the ‘common’ candidate of the UNP+TNA+JVP, based on the shameless political expediency of his turning against the Rajapakse brothers. Suddenly black was made in to white! (This is before even mentioning the matter of the bag of glistening US Dollar notes Robert O. Blake handed over to him, and his record of giving army contracts to the ex-Son-in-Law!).

Whoever Romesh Fernando is, and what his so-called ‘vicarious’ association with SF is based on, he should realise theman is simply incapable of building or maintaining relationships vital for any leadership role, and he disqualifies himself on this grounds alone. He claimed to win the war by himself, stupidly and tactlessly demeninf the role of the air force and the navy or the civilian protection force. He couldn’t maintain the political party he formed, because no one could work with him. Ask Arjuna Ranatunga. We all know that he is a political refugee at the moment.

So Romesh Fernando, suck your big toe and go back to sleep.

    Ramesh,
What you have said of SF is largely supported by what has been said of him elsewhere, and he has clearly been an outstanding soldier and officer. Whether he is equally suited as a minister of state is another matter. That said, what is important is for the government to use his outstanding talents where they are most useful. This, it has spectacularly failed to do. And, thank you for giving the lie to the claim – repeated by both the President and MR – that “ the current failure in intelligence” was due to “the arrest and detention of a few intelligence officers”. That is patently ridiculous. The present debacle is not due to a failure in gathering intelligence but in the failure to properly handle vital intelligence which was virtually handed on a platter. It was a case of very poor judgement on the part of those who received it. If some intelligence officers were guilty of offences, however skilled they were in their work, they deserved the punishment they got. You cannot afford to have in the security outfit, persons who are corrupt and lack integrity.

A field Marshall appointed, not by the government that fought the war ,but by a later government to score political points. After fighting the war the man wanted to become President and contested and lost.

In this war, an army ( all forces) of about 400,000 fought about a 15,000 LTTE terrorists for about 4 years. The LTTE fought like a conventional army defending a defined territory. Most of the LTTE guys died while an almost equal number of casualties were suffered by the government forces which were much better armed.and supported.

So tactically or strategically, it was not such a famous victory . The only thing about Fonseka is that he is not moved by casualties and keeps hammering away. But there is no great leader, tactician or soldier in him. He in fact is known for abusing his position and power. When he travelled his body guards used to close the roads for hours. When Fonseka talks he just promotes himself in a crude way.

His lack of intelligence or economic sense can be assessed from when after the war was won he proposed to raise two more army divisions. He wanted to continue a army government in the North and may be even take over the country .

Sri Lankans must examine all these things are intelligently because ultimately it is our own people who suffer and we who have to pay for everything.

      Kebab,
Funny thing is Demalu blamed Sarath Fonseka for committing war crimes and killing 40,000 civilians but at the Presidential election in 2010 Demalu forgot the charges they made against Fonseka and voted to him. We hear that it was a result of a phone call from Uncle Sam to Sambandan. If Sarath Fonseka won USA would not have brought war crimes charges against Sri Lankan Armed Forces. What a wonderful world!

Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, in an interview with Ceylon Today on Apr 28 2019 (http://www.ceylontoday.lk/print-edition/6/print-more/29394); ‘Our Military services defeated the most ruthless terrorist outfit in the world. Not like these small terror cells, that outfit had a powerful army just like ours.’
SL army began Eelam war 4 with 80 000, under Daluwatte (CBK regime) it had 120 000.
Several books have been published by claimants, we await not just Fonseka’s, but also JHU, PNM and JVP claims as the instigators, who did not follow a certain someone (who desired an honourable peace and had contractual obligations with the tigers) but dragged him to the fight

Participating in the debate in Parliament on gazette declaring a state of emergency Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka gave a fine speech. He said although I am in the Government, I am not speaking on behalf of the Government but on behalf of the country. He criticized the PM and State Minister for Defense. He told that the entire government would have resigned if a disaster like the Easter Sunday carnage had happened in any other country, but such things would never happen in Sri Lanka. He severely criticized the government for allowing the intelligence service to deteriorate.

“Many are blaming the current failure in intelligence on the arrest and detention of a few intelligence officers.”
If they have broken the law, they should be charged, hear the cases and punish if found guilty. But I understand that in many cases no charges have been made. In some cases, they have been told that if they confess that they acted on the orders of Gotabhaya Rajapakse, they will be released. But they have refused to do that. We have to salute such Honorable Men in our Armed Forces.

Don Juan Dharmapala (reincarnated) ruined the Intelligence Service. He exposed the safe house in Millenium city leading to the assassination of Intelligence Officers by LTTE.

Sarath Fonseka is certainly not a politician, the kind that has infested the Sri Lankan landscape and ruined that beautiful land in the last few decades. I was very impressed by what he said in parliament soon after the Easter Sunday tragedy. Yes, there are no special qualifications needed to be “president” in this banana republic, and a determined and sincere former army man like SF will do magnificently. All the fools who think the current crop or the previous crop of corrupt, sleazy and wholly incompetent politicians have the necessary qualifications are on a different planet..!

A very well written piece. The BLAME for this colossal human loss of lives should be placed at the feet of the President Maithripala Sirisena. After all he is just a Grama Sevaka, and that too from rural Polonnaruwa.

What the F.. does he know of defense, law and order.

He has erred enough and if we keep him any more the chances are he would declare WAR on either India or America. Especially because the CIA and RAW knew about the impending attacks and did not prevent it, whilst he was gallivanting abroad with his family. Then we are sure to get our Arses kicked.

“We need a doer, not a bunch of jokers” Ramsesh Fernando

What’s wrong with jokers? A comedian won the Ukrainian election to lead that county. Alan (Al) Franken is an American comedian who was elected to become a senator of Minnesota. Jesse Ace Ventura is a wrestler and entertainer who became the Governor of Minnesota. Ventura was also a strong leader and an ex Navy Seal. Most of these gentlemen performed much better than most other political veterans. We in asinine Lanka are blessed with the Sinhala modaya’s as our leaders. They are far worse than the jokers of the popular comedy series “vinoda samaya”. IS has now taken advantage of this and is not here to stay. Ramesh, can you please answer this question for me. If we find so much arms cashes and explosives from these alleged Muslim extremists, then why didn’t they attack us or defend themselves when the we attacked them during the pogroms? I am sure they have all these weapons during that time too. If so, why did these extremist or terrorists not hit back?

    Native
“I strongly believe that this country belongs to the Sinhalese but there are minority communities and we treat them like our people,”
“We being the majority of the country, 75%, we will never give in and we have the right to protect this country.
“We are also a strong nation … They can live in this country with us. But they must not try to, under the pretext of being a minority, demand undue things.”
Take a large printout and hang on your wall. THIS IS WHAT WE ALL THINK. (It is important to know what the enemy thinks.)
By the way Native you guys have go back to the drawing board – include Wahabis in the equation and see how it comes out.

Mahinda Rajapaksa was the Architect, Sarath Fonseka was the Structural Engineer and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa the Project Manager of our liberation. Thank them for the fresh air we enjoyed till 21/4.

        Gotaha for 2020 Presidency

“His theme “ERADICATE Islamic terror from Country…it is shame how CT do not wants to Point it out….”

Do you think this little islander with reputation being the national hangman could do what he set out to deliver. This is an International Problem which needs international solution. Hindians have been very concerned about Jihadhi activities in the past as many years.

LTTE was a minor actor when compared to Global Caliphate which has steady supply of men and material from all over the world.

When the war ended in 2009 both Gota and Mahinda thanked Hindians profusely for helping them win the war. Both said on the record if not for Hindia they would not have won the war.

        Please get real.

Am curious, do you intend being a military supplier want to become one of those new rich?

Well if that is what you feel you are excused. However the truth remains elsewhere. For little islanders gloating about something that does not belongs to them is alright.

“Thank them for the fresh air we enjoyed till 21/4.”

Of course you do that because you are a little islanders who has nothing better to do in life.
However, Mahinda, Gota and Basil are overtly grateful to VP and Hindia 24/7/52 for winning two elections and one war.

When are you planning to start your next riot?
Are you waiting for the local saffron glad thug to inform you the auspicious time?

This time around take Sarath the public racist Fonseka with you as he “believes that this country belongs to the Sinhalese ” for legitimising looting, and burning the hard earned assets of the minorities.

Please let me know the place and time as I want to be there as an observer.

What did you promise your family?

Sarath Fonseka was a ruthless killer, egotist and a mentally deranged man. The successful result of the LTTE war was a team effort and he wanted to get the full credit. MR and Gota gave the leadership under enormous pressure from the west and from people like RW within the country. There was so much false propaganda from the people like Lasantha Wicramasinghe. He was a traitor who deserved to be eliminated and the whole country knows who did that. SF had a callous disregard for the lives of his subordinates. He sent the low ranking soldiers to unwinnable situations to be killed like flies. He was not a tactician but a ruthless brute. Give him the ministerial position of inland security, and see what happens. Good luck to mother Lanka.

Ramesh…just interested, what are your credentials? And you speak as though you know SF personally. Do you?

Despite repeated calls from all corners to appoint Sarath Fonseka to be in charge of Law and Order President is conveniently dodging the appointment due to pressure from Rajapaksha family and he too is not comfortable as he himself is not without blemish. With the appoinment of new CJ he is assured of a safe wicket to play any unorthodox shot. Easter Sunday carnage is really a blessing in disguise to the the politicians as they can divert the attention of the people with various promises and plans to re assure their safety. They may even bring new legislation to extend the life of parliament and the possibility is, all 225 MPP will raise both hands in approval. So much for Democracy.’ May their tribe increase’.
