Whether one agrees or disagrees with the stand taken by Ambassador Tamara Kunanayagam in defending the Sri Lankan State and the Mahinda Rajapakse regime against the US-sponsored resolution in Geneva, the attempt to transfer her to some Latin American country is not acceptable. It is an act of petty vengeance by a mafia-cabal who have usurped power.
I am one of those who condemned the US-sponsored resolution, since it was an expression of hypocrisy by the No. 01 terrorist State in the world, guilty of the most horrendous war crimes and other crimes against humanity. The resolution was intended to cajole the Regime to fall in line with the global strategic agenda of US imperialism and its allies. It has nothing to do with standing up for human rights or for justice for the Tamil people. These issues were exploited by the US to pursue its own agenda, while also catering to the electoral lobbies in various countries allied to the US. India too exploited the issue to advance its own strategic interests, strengthen its hold on Sri Lanka and balance its internal interests. India would do good to pass a similar resolution on its genocidal policies in Kashmir and against the Maoist revolutionaries throughout the Red Corridor.
Indeed, our party has stood against a military solution to the Tamil national question and continues to strive for a democratic political solution based on internal self-determination of the Tamil nation. We have also called for accountability for war crimes and atrocities and for continuing abductions, enforced disappearances and extra-legal killings by the Sri Lankan State, not just under the present regime, but by earlier regimes as well, including under the UNP. We do not agree with the stand taken by Ambassador Kunanayagam in Geneva, but recognize that she carried out her duty and the task entrusted to her by the President in an exceptionally articulate and courageous manner, above and beyond all other official representatives .
The attempt to remove her from Geneva takes on significance not only due to the sheer injustice done to her, but because it demonstrates the extent to which a mafia-hatchet cabal has come to exercise political power within the Ministry of External Affairs, the Defense Ministry and, indeed, throughout the entire state apparatus.
In as much I have expressed serious differences of principle with Ambassador Dayan Jayatileke and have carried out an intense public debate on some core issues of theory and politics, I condemn with equal vehemence the unwarranted effort to tarnish his image and to remove him from his position as well, driven by such malicious intentions. I shall struggle against my opponents relentlessly and without let for the sake of upholding and defending principles, but I shall struggle against any force that attacks my opponents in the despicable and arbitrary manner in which these two ambassadors are being hounded by a mafia-hatchet cabal usurping the sovereignty of the people to advance their petty agendas.
The sustained attempt to discredit and exact personal revenge from Tamara Kunanayagam and Dayan Jayatileke should be roundly condemned by all decent people who value the ethical norms of civilized, democratic behavior.

Ajith, You sound more like maverick, Vasu-I’m-only-having-fun-deva today, nothing like great personalities who led the party like Sarath Muththettuwegama or Wickremasinghe. Nobody asked for Tamara’s appointment, the minister made it. So was Dayan’s. But the Geneva problem is, Tamara, with all those qualifications could not convince even India to vote against the resolution. She could not persuade any country to vote in favour of Sri Lanka, she could not do anything, not a jot! What did she do actually? Yes she delivered quality speeches, but it clearly wasn’t enough was it? The government has a point, despite her brilliance, she’s not quite the right person there. Dayan is becoming a joke too. He wants to be everywhere. He even wants to advice the French president. Clever people, but they have to understand their job.

It is facile to blame Tamara for the defeat that Sri Lanka sufferred in Geneva. The Regime had antagonized India by simply and publicly lying about agreeing on implementing 13+ and devolution. The Tamil Nadu lobby exterted concerted pressure on Delhi, and India had to compromise with the US due to its strategic partnership and reliance on the US to obtain a permanent seat in UNSC.India tilted the balance in favor of the US. Mahinda Samarasinghe provokoed India by announcing the India was to vote against the resolution- utter stupidity. The Sajin Vass cabal, Mahinda Samarasinghe and G.L were more involved in an egoistical power play, than focusing on defeating the resolution.This power play undermined the a unified strategy that Tamara was trying to implement. Tamaraa’s defense cannot be reduced to good speeches. She argued the case with the fire of impassioned reason and logic. I say this, even though it is not my stand on the issue.
This Rupert Vanderkoon is a terminal sychophant and a Tami-hater going by the vulgarity of his verbiage in other comments. He does not deserve a response from me. I have simply taken a further opportunity to make the case for Tamara Kunanayagam. Are you jealous that Dayan may be advicing the French President- and not you? As it appears, you cannot even advice your own mind to express any degree of cultured and reasonable thoughts.

Ajith, You sound very much a typical communist now, with warped ideas on the obvious. India does not have to worship the US for the security council seat. As Obama said now many a time, India most certainly have the support of the USA. A minor disposition to disagree with the US on a minor issue would not have caused tremors in their relationships. The US will understand India’s strategic interests. Unfortunately, Indian government could not afford to lose their co-alition partners in Tamilnadu and Tamilnadu state government’s collaboration. Remember the mayhem the Tamilnadu MPs committed in the Lok Sabha during the presidential address?And subsequent messages from the PM? India never complained against any provocation at any point. It is now absolutely certain, Dayan did advice Sarkozy. Because amidst such liberal-conservative wave flying across Europe, Sarkozy lost to the socialist candidate. The moral of the story: If you are the leader of the country where Dayan is Sri Lanka’s ambassador, please commit suicide.
On a different note, may be this socialist candidate had a brain, unlike the secretary of the three-wheeler Ceylon Communist Party. That must have helped him win as well.

Idras, Which communist leader did anything to the poor in Sri Lanka? Of course SA and SM were great personalities, who didn’t seek personal benefits through marxism for their living. They were great personalities in every sense. They spoke sense and were inspirational. Quite possibly Ajith personifies them in many ways but some part of the article is akin to one of Vasudeva’s.Please note, I have absolutely nothing to do with SM, SAW, Marx or Lenin.

I recall that you came forward and expressed to my comrades your willingness to look for safe places for me during my days of underground activity and indictment under the PTA, when both the State’s repressive apparatus and the JVP were looking for me, the former having abducted (domestically ‘renditioned’) my comrades and the latter having killed one of them. That was a risky and principled thing for you to do.

I don’t think the USA is so bad after all, if we look at post-WW2 Japan and the “Marshall Plan” under which Germany has become the dominant force in Europe again. In any event, US “imperialism” is superior to Sinhala-Buddhist chauvinism.

What goes around comes around. Dayan defended Sri Lankan war crimes in front of the whole world in 2009. Now let him reap what he sows. But given that Rajapakse is short on intellectuals – particularly the variety that can make a coherent argument on the world stage – I doubt he’ll lose his position any time soon.
