The Old Regime Is Falling; Surely

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

I write, of course, from the framework of the Yahapalana movement. From this perspective what we observe now happening is tremendous and exulting. Also, looking back at the short-lived betrayal theories posted on President Maitripala Sirisena’s wall, it all seems that those who indulged in that outcry were misinformed and lacking in tactical political knowledge.

Our story began with the bring-back campaign. Who wanted this campaign? Not Mahinda Rajapaksa, who had by that time virtually resigned himself to the status of a retired-hurt President. Mahinda had handed over the reigns of the SLFP and UPFA to his slayer and successor, the humble Maitripala Sirisena from BOP 400 Polonnaruwa farmers colony. It all originated with the fear that enveloped many of Mahinda’s cronies who had charges arrayed against them and the realisation among them that their lucrative careers were at an end. In the part of the prosperous world that I live, politicians don’t fear the fall because the business sector absorbs them. On the other hand, the claustrophobic world that is Sri Lanka perhaps hardly offers pollies any option but to fight for return.

Champika Ranil ArjunaWhat future did persons like Wimal, Vasu, Tissa Vitharna, DEW Gunasekera, Dinesh, Aluthgamage have? Wimal spoke derisively and contemptuously against Yahapalanaya. He and his other cohorts refused to see that the Yahapalanaya slogan did have an appeal among the ordinary and even less vocal masses. Wimal, whom Dayan Jayatilleka praised as a ‘Jacobian Orator,” cried in his sharp shrill voice with eerie tone, “Yahapalanayo…koh mung?” “Sirisenayo, koh mung? Ranilayo koh mung...” The Jacobin Orator had been off the mark. We know that at least now.

What the Yahapalana government now harvests is precisely the fruits of appeal of yahapalanaya– the appeal for the return of decency in governing; the appeal for the rule of law and for the supremacy of law over the highest in the land. People know as a hard fact that this has already been achieved and is on the process of getting crystallised. The civil society’s spontaneous organisers are conscious of that. Sri Lankans are at last awakening. We now see non -politicians concerned and articulate about the happenings in politics. This wider participation is essential for a practising democracy. Sri Lanka had it in the past. Remember the Hartal of 1952? The public tide of 1956?The strong trade union campaigns of Bala Tampoe? The JVP revolt of 1971? This sense of participation was killed first by JR autocracy and then by MR autocracy. But autocracy cannot put down the feeling of injustice and foul-play that people eventually experience in their day-to-day life. When journalists are killed and gone missing? When newspaper editors are murdered in broad daylight under the watch of the President and his powerful brother in charge of defence? When the very Army Commander who fought the war is unfairly jailed and his hard-won titles for courage grabbed away? When public money and property are diverted to private ends? When shanty dwellers are chased away without alternative accommodation? When the justice system is subverted? When extravagant waste and profligacy takes place? When minorities are made to feel third class citizens? When Public servants are tied to the tree? When rapists and druggies are taken into government? This kind of governance cannot last for long. When people start awakening and rising with effective outlets available for their intuitive grievances, hell will follow for an oppressive government.

The regime holders of the Rajapaksa government are right now facing the music. With remarkable political prescience Ranil Wickremesinghe had made two predictions. The first was made during the height of Rajapaksa rule. Ranil said that the UNP will form a government in 2015. That happened once and it will happen in August. The second prediction was made at the height of the apparent success of the bring-back rallies. Remember what a song and dance was made out by veteran journalists like Mahindapala-the inventor of the ‘Nugegoda Man’? And by the more theoretical veteran writer Dayan Jayatilleka who went into rapture about a single meeting at Nugegoda? Well, right at this point, Ranil predicted that this pro-Rajapaksa movement will dissipate as it is artificial.

Readers, this is what we see now happening. Despite all the wild protests against President Maitripala Sirisena, on recall what he did by permitting the controversial UPFA cronies back into business has been salutary from the governing faction’s point of view. Watching the old cronies make their way into nomination- Susil Premjayanth, man with the former movie star’s name, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa of Shirani Bandaranayake fame, and all others – the incompetent and outworn, the more corrupt and the less corrupt – had been too much for discerning persons to bear. Civil rights persons and intellectuals began to raise the alarm-although partly un-informedly. Newspapers and media were ruffled. The Mahanayakas made pronouncements. The tide of opposition is now building up and a new wave is gravitating toward the new United National Front-ironically symbolised by that reliable animal-the Elephant.

‘On hindsight, was this also a plot similar to the Common candidate plot? If so, this time it was a misunderstood plot that earned Maitri a lot of unjustified flak.

The bring-back initiative is collapsing and the revolution of 8th January 2015 will be saved for the people. The former President’s unwisdom will make him experience a bitter winter of retirement. Remember Shakespeare’s immortal lines? “The evil that men doeth lives after them;the good will be interred with their bones.” That’s pretty much the life experience of us all.

‘Bring back’ campaign was a flop from the beginning ! They are no match to Ranil’s intelligence ! I am sure CBK too would have contributed immensely.

Shyamon Jayasinghe in his enthusiasm for the UNP is under-estimating the depth of stupidity in the Sri Lankan electorate.

Unfortunately, Ali Baba is far from a spent force. There are millions of dumb voters in our country who worship that guy.

Sri Lanka is at a terribly critical juncture. To secure our future we have no choice, but bury Ali Baba for good. I hope we will.

      Cheers!

PS: External debt burden is about to turn Sri Lanka into next Greece of the world. That is a fact. No debate about that in our election campaign. Talk is about Ali Baba’s future. How cursed we are!

        “How cursed we are”

You don’t mean its the Kunena’s curse. Of course not.

However its the prolong wailing of the ordinary people whose agony of hopeless living and fear of dying through no fault of their own over the past 67 years caused by mismanagement, lots of politicking, racism, …. has something to do with current predicament.

        Well no easy answer.

Lets see how the clan and its cronies are going to use the race card in addition to international conspiracy, LTTE menace, Diabolic diaspora, imminent invasion by Thamil Nadu, ……….

          Srilal,

average men and women in the conuntry are memory losers. The gene that works for keeping memories is stopped in those people. So, these man either they are in WESTERN PROVINCE or others, they behave the same.
Having had the chance to talk to some people of all walks of life down there, I thought, why they are still waiting a man who abused almost everything to see returning ? It is because of the folly. i BELIEVE, srilanken is already lost. That will be declared as the next state to follow Greece.
See, things are very expensive, but people have no funds to run their lives. I as one who came from Europe, found it not easy down there. Bitches son, Rajapakshe has manipulated all the uneducated guys down there – if monkeys would have been given a chance they would surely do it better. Most of our people are born stupid people.
No matter if even their lovely ones would hav ebeen abducted, killed out, they dont care. In a country where a war went on for 30 years, should be very careful with any kind of dictators.. but do you think that the average would ever see it in that way ? NO; THEY would do anything for a rice packet or a cup of tea. It is the destruciton of the nation we are reaching today.

            Leelawathie,

yes i agree with you, but let’s try to change at least one person , there are millions of floating voters , especially the younger generation , those people are not die hard lunatics ( kapuwath Nil , rathu …) for any party , they would probably decide on 15 or 16 th August whom to vote , we can convince them as to why we shouldn’t vote for Mahinda or UPFA , voting for Mahinda is a one way ticket back to living hell again.

Everything has to come to an end. The fall of MR started in Sept last year when he decided to call for early elections almost two years ahead, contested and lost. Now he is trying to enter parliament which he will do by getting only a fewer preferential votes. After which most of his cronies will desert him.

I still cannot believe why Sirisena stood his line! He could have broken SLFP with his clean friends. If the Constitution of the Party did not allow that, he could have gone to Swan as did in the Presidential election. It was very very very clear that Mahinda was NOT going to run outside SLFP or UPFA as he knew he would not get any votes from traditional SLFP-base any more, other than his personal support. Vasu, DEW, Tissa, Wimal and the lot are good for nothing, he knew. Sirisena should have come out. That was, he could have had a strong influence in the government after Ausgust with as a coalition partner of UNP in the government. Now, UNP / UPF will have a strong majority, but will be with a weak leader in Ranil. Maithri will have no say as a ‘powerless’ President to ensure good governance.

Personally, I believe that Ranil is the one who did not want to take Rajapakse’s Kurakkan Samagama to task. FIVE more weeks!!!

    Shyamon,
If Sirisena either tactitly or by design has given the candidancy to Mahinda Rajapakse for the Aug elections, the whole yahapalanaya can fall apart.

What ever said & done , when it comes to general election , it’s a total different ball game . unlike presidential Election , here people are being asked to elect members for the parliament for their respective districts , majority of people inclined to vote for their preferred party first then for the candidate , this is the whole reason for all these hullabaloo , party symbol carries a lot of weight more than any thing else .
take kurunegala district ‘s candidate list for instance
. out of 22 candidates at least 9 or 10 would go to parliament. here is my prediction

      1) Mahinda R would top the list 2)Dayasiri J 3)Johnston 4)T.B Ekanayake 5)Shantha Bandara 6)Anura Priyadarshana Yapa 7) Jayaratna Herath 8)Salinda Disanayaka 9)Athula Wijesingha 10) any one from the list is possible.

once the crooks get the nominations from their desired party , it’s a child’s play for these seasoned politicians , they have got enough money to burn , wait and see how they play the game. it’s MY3 who let us down big time , hadn’t he given the nominations to any of the above crooks , out come would have been a total different one , MY3 you had chosen your party over Sri Lanka , what a betrayal !

      • 3
        0

        You are dead right,
but in a country every other is so stupid to make it clear, how could MY3 react – if he did so, do you think – the bunch would stay away – they would organize a blood bath killing anyone against them. That could have happened under the lead of MAHINDA RAJAPAKSHE. 58 lacks of people supported Mahinda means – almost every second out of the vote eligible.
So long, anti MR fractions become more in numbers and powerful as no other, nothing can happen towards the change.
MY3 stayed silent only for that matter. I think he will stay neutral for the election being unbiased to anyone.
Even if the bugger would have been the PM, he will not be able to work with My3 SINCE MS is still executive president. Executive powers are still there even if 19A was passed in the parliment.. EP was not yet abolished.

          Samuel Jayaweera ,

With all due respect , i beg to differ from your point of view , MY3’s betrayal can’t be justified under any circumstances , he still owes us a detailed explanation as to what went through behind the curtain to make such a monumental blunder , apparently he was scared of UNP forming a government with a 2/3 majority , that is full of bollocks , under the prevailing system , it is impossible for any party to gain 2/3 , if that so , it would have been MR’s 2010 war victory general election , had that happened ? no it hadn’t , It was only MR’s bribing did the trick.

As to MR going killing spree , i don’t think so , he could not possibly go through the old routine any more . if he did , he would go to jail straight away.

Presidential election where HE Maithripala Srisena was elected, did have lesser party politics.
However , now again , with full of crazy of power , Mahinda Rajapaksa contesting in the general election, again party politics surfaced .
For the last 68 years , Sri Lankan politics/politicians are worried about their party , MP / Minister posts , and not about the country.
Now Sri Lankans ,reasonable thinking , genuine voters got a very good golden opportunity to show their true patriotism towards the country by voting and electing
“Unitednited National Front for Good Governance” (UNFGG) to rule the country . This will create a clean political culture in the future, also chase the drug dealers, power hungers like Mahinda , thugs corrupted politicians entirely out of politics.

This “MR & Co.(Unlimited)” (that is my version of the corrupt MR Regime) has been and will be waiting to adopt the “well rounded scheme” of “Buying the Cross Overs” once the elections are over. He did this during his regime and secured that “2/3rd Majority” and kept all of them as “slaves”. He also saw to it that his family and cronies were all kept at the helm of Governing matters and some of those “cross overs” – “SLAVES” were also “permitted” to reap whatever that came on their way. All those involved in that “Nugegoda Man” creation will tirelessly work towards the “BUY” over that “Cross Overs”. That is why when the proposal was made in the 19A to cancel the representation in Parliament of those “Cross Over”, an “OBJECTION” was brought during the Committee Stage and that entire provision was “DROPPED”. Who brought that “OBJECTION” and who “AGREED”. That “OBJECTION” was brought by the Opposition and “AGREEMENT” was given by the Government. So in this instance, both the Government and the Opposition strengthen the “Foundation” for the continuity of that “DIRTY GAME”. Most likely “MR & CO (Unlimited) would have already “set the ball rolling” and this will come to light after the elections.

The people must be AWARE of this with the experience they have had already and make a firm decision to OUST all those “CORRUPTED”,( both in the Government and the Opposition) lot who are seeking your vote. Please remember, when you go into that “small cubical” to mark your decision, there is NO ONE to “PUSH”; “INTIMIDATE” and “TWIST YOUR ARM” to get your vote. So walk into that “Monumental Cubicle” and make a firm decision without FEAR but HONORABLY. That “FIRM and HONORABLE” mark of your vote will USHER in the TRUE YAHAPALANAYA.

Thanks for the summary. Yes, Maitripals Sirisena has taken a lot of flak for his treasonous action of letting crooks and cronies contest. What do you think Mahinda and Sirisena discussed a over several nights? Just discuss the taste of the Hoppers?

There is more to it, but now All the Opposition forces who want :Law and Order, Yahapalanya, are marching forward.

Let’s hope Mahinda Rajapaksa can be made to Retire. He is almost 70 years old?

Mr Shyamon Jayasinghe, you do not have to be politically correct in this situation. Do you really believe that Sirisena has not betrayed the Sri Lankan people by giving the opportunity to come back and haunt Sri Lank?

MR got the money and bookies have already approached him and he and his rogues will use their unethical methods to fool poor Sri Lankan voters and will definitely try to come into power because it is a do or die situation for them. The way Sri Lankan voters use their franchise is questionable. True he was chased away last time on the 8th of January. However, parliamentary elections are a totally different exercise.

A Yahapalana heavy, and a current Senior Minister who changed sides a few time in recent months was caught by a equally heavy Missus ,when the Minister was making love to his new girl friend in a Luxury Pad in Colombo.

Although the Minister escaped with a good ” Kunuharpupa ” spray and a few slaps across the face, the news got into a WEB site which is very popular among the Sinhala readers in the Diaspora,

May be the Yahapalana organizers are so cocky about their impending landslide which this writer predicts, they even find time a have a bit of Fun on the side.

Mr Jayasinghe must have done his research well and seen the heavy hitters like the Minister Rajitha joining the UNP Elephant as the Chief Organizer for Kaluthara, pushing aside even dedicated long time UNP MPs and even Ministers.

And Rajitha’s gun son getting the okay from Yahapalana Ranil to contest in Gampaha.

Wonder whether the CB Boss Mahendran will join Galleo Ravi , when Ranil announces his Economic Development plan of the next Yahapalana Regime….

Do you really believe, Mr Jayasinghe, that those 5.8 million who voted for Mr Rajapakse at the last election didn’t know of the evils the Rajapakse regime was responsible for? And do you think the 6.2 million who voted for Yahapalanaya are happy with the performance of the UNP in the subsequent 180 days?

Rajapakse can count on the 5.8 million voters who supported him at the last elections. They did not care how bad the Rajapakse Regime was, they did not care that many of the MPs who supported Rajapakse were crooks, thugs and criminals. Those voters didn’t care Rajapakse was turning Sri Lanka to a family fiefdom and were willing to be vassals to his kith and kin. They were willing to allow Mahinda Rajapakse to be succeeded by Namal Rajapakse and the family rule to go on indefinitely.

Now, do you Mr Jayasinghe, believe that these 5.8 million will withdraw their support to Rajapakse? These people are now claiming that the country was ruined in the last 180 days, the roads are breaking up, garbage is piling up on the streets of Colombo, the pavement hawkers are back, that there is no “economic” development. They refer to the Bond Issue, the resignation of the Customs chief, etc. They are whitewashing the sins of Rajapakse with the stupid flaws of the UNP regime.

However, the real reason for the 5.8 million voters support for Rajapakse is their deep-seated antipathy towards minorities. That stance has not changed. And that will propel Rajapakse back to the throne.

And some of the 6.2 million who voted against Rajapakse are now disillusioned with the UNP and perhaps vote for candidates who will eventually end up in the Rajapakse camp.

So, however much you Mr Jayasinghe tries to put up a brave face, August 17 will be the end of Yahapalanaya and the beginning of a new regime of Rajapakse tyranny. We’ll wait and see!

What ever said and written about politics in SL.
People have had enough of MR and co.
People know well what MR did in his second term. Almost robed the treasury of SL. No politician stole the wealth of nation as MR and family did.
He is hiding his wealth in many places.
His family owned many properties in and outside of SL.
No secret MR was jolly riding with all foreign trips at expense of public.
He was having luxury breakfast no other president dared to do.
He and his family cost a lot to the ocuntry
Now he fear that all truth about fraud and corruption will come out
His gangs to fear that. Drug dealers and robbers, and all sort of killers fear now and they have to do politics do save their life
that is why they all want to come power.
will public vote for him again
I think MR will meet his Waterloo this time.
with it he will lose his respect as well

    Dear Shyamon Jayasinghe,

“Ranil said that the UNP will form a government in 2015. That happened once and it will happen in August.”

The fly in the ointment is Ranil’s CB fiasco.

If not for that, a clear win for the combined Yahapalanya forces would have been a cake walk.

I agree with most of what you have written but Ranil was Myopic with his CB coverup.

    Kind Regards,
    OTC

    Shyamon Jayasinghe

The Old Regime Is Falling; Surely

*** You say that you write from a Prosperous part of the World but let me tell you what you have written leads me to believe that you are referring to Ayers Rock .

Allow me to go through it and it it is a 10 km stretch.

    1) I write, of course, from the framework of the Yahapalana movement. From this perspective what we observe now happening is tremendous and exulting.

*** It is not exsulting it is insulting to the Tamils that the THUG is even allowed anywhere near the House of Power.

2)Also, looking back at the short-lived betrayal theories posted on President Maitripala Sirisena’s wall, it all seems that those who indulged in that outcry were misinformed and lacking in tactical political knowledge.

*** Who is the clever sod. Get your act together and let me ask you who has betrayed who.

    3) Who wanted this campaign? Not Mahinda Rajapaksa, who had by that time virtually resigned himself to the status of a retired-hurt President.

*** You are wrong. There was clear signal to those Foot Soldiers from Mahintha the Fallen King to Resurrect the Castle.

    4) Mahinda had handed over the reigns of the SLFP and UPFA to his slayer and successor, the humble Maitripala Sirisena from BOP 400 Polonnaruwa farmers colony.

** It was wrestled from him.

    5) It all originated with the fear that enveloped many of Mahinda’s cronies who had charges arrayed against them and the realisation among them that their lucrative careers were at an end. In the part of the prosperous world that I live, politicians don’t fear the fall because the business sector absorbs them. On the other hand, the claustrophobic world that is Sri Lanka perhaps hardly offers pollies any option but to fight for return.

*** You are talking rubbish. Mahintha and his Cronies have already made their fortunes which will last a life time and beyond, all they wanted was the means to keep the Bounty.

    6) What the Yahapalana government now harvests is precisely the fruits of appeal of yahapalanaya– the appeal for the return of decency in governing; the appeal for the rule of law and for the supremacy of law over the highest in the land. People know as a hard fact that this has already been achieved and is on the process of getting crystallised.

*** Which planet are you on my Friend. The THUGS ( MR) CRIMINALS ( Gotha) and THIEVES ( Basil) are all still at large and contesting and campaigning and you call that adherence to Rule OF Law Unique to Sri Lanka.

    7) Sri Lankans are at last awakening. We now see non -politicians concerned and articulate about the happenings in politics.

*** No my friend they are still in a Coma I mean in a Vegetative State.

    8) This wider participation is essential for a practising democracy. Sri Lanka had it in the past.

*** What did we have on the 8th January then . Was it just a Rehearsal a prelude to the Big Bang.

    9) Remember the Hartal of 1952? The public tide of 1956?The strong trade union campaigns of Bala Tampoe? The JVP revolt of 1971? This sense of participation was killed first by JR autocracy and then by MR autocracy. But autocracy cannot put down the feeling of injustice and foul-play that people eventually experience in their day-to-day life.

*** Of course you can and the proof is in the Pudding. It has been happening for the last 65 years.

    10) The regime holders of the Rajapaksa government are right now facing the music.

*** You make it sound like the LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS.

    11) With remarkable political prescience Ranil Wickremesinghe had made two predictions. The first was made during the height of Rajapaksa rule. Ranil said that the UNP will form a government in 2015.

*** Did you not hear the Predictions of MRs Astrologer. Everything went astray.

    12) Readers, this is what we see now happening.

*** I want to tell the Readers the real story. Readers the clock has stopped ticking and has come to a Standstill and after August the Pendulum is going to swing in the Opposite Direction.

    MY ADVICE:

With the export of Tea and other commodities falling Sri Lanka now has a material to export which is in Abundance. BAD GOVERNENCE coated with BETRAYAL.

In Julius Caesar Shakespeare showed us how fickle masses are. From the side of Brutus they swayed to the opposite side of Antonio in a few minutes. This is what happened to the bring-back rallies. Dayan J and Don Mahindapala ares stupid to have gone into raptures looking at those crowds. Dayan Appu called it a “rising.” Don Mahindapala coined a term from the ‘Balangoda Man,’ to “Nugegoda Man.’ Isn’t it all damn idiotic of these two? All the time Ranil kept silent and amused. He knew beforehand what was going to happen.

Mr. Shyamon Jayasinghe, Congratulations and good wishes to you.I agree with you.If Mr.Maithripala Sirisena did not give nominations to the rascals of the old regime they would have created a lot of trouble and probably not allowed a peaceful election in our Country..Now hopefully after today’s nominations are over we should have peace and a very peaceful election on 17th August.Like “man proposes God disposes”, whoever nominates. the PEOPLE in whom power resides will dispose. And surely the people will dispose of the old regimaya into whatever places they richly deserve.

Browsing through the “Comments”section above it is incredible how the UNP dominated media mafia is plugging the so called virtues of the Aliya party

Ten long years we have had MR,Basil, Gota, Namal, Bandu, Dinesh, Tissa Vitharna, Vasu, Wimal Aluthgamage, Sajin, all making a mockery of law and order. Surely, our people will be tired of them and wish to see them off forever?

Shyamon has started from a point convenient for his essay but the truth is Nugegoda man came after. First it was the ordinary people who started visiting MR at Tangalle and appealing him to not to give up. It was, that, the Nugegoda gang caught up with.
It has now become force even the President had to give in to.
The’Jarapalana’ bunch of loosers soon will find them, where they rightfully belong, in the junk yard for good.

Maithripala did the correct thing giving the nominatons to dumb rapassa. If he did not this immense burden to the society will never end. This is the end of rajapassas.Remember maithri also allowed people who wanted YAHAPALANAYA to contest from UNF or UNP. Until this happens Rapassas will not see an end.

Now its up to KURUNAGALA people to test their intelligence. If rapassas wins majority of Kurunagala people will be dumb unintelligent bastards who will want to see a downturn in Sri Lanka. If he looses we all should uphail Kurunagala voters.
    Thank You!

To Rohan Polwatte. Mara already owes the government a billion for the use of helicopters, buses set at the last elections. Why is the yahapalana government not recovering the money from Mara?
