The Only Real Choices: Neoliberal Elitism Or Patriotic Populism

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

It was Marx who made the characteristically acerbic remark that “the incredible flatness of present-day bourgeois society is best measured by the height of its greatest intellects”. He was referring to Jeremy Bentham. The fact that the key ideologue and propagandist of the Yahapalana government is Mangala Samaraweera speaks to the pathetic character of that government. More pointedly, how Samaraweera could have been the Foreign Minister and now the Finance Minister of an administration which contains within its ranks a former topnotch administrator and a genuine intellectual with a PhD from Paris, Dr. Sarath Amunugama, is perhaps the best evidence of why this government is in such trouble politically, economically and electorally.

If the answer (actually excuse) is that Mangala Samaraweera is the ideologue of the UNP rather than the Yahapalana regime as a whole, then Sajith Premadasa or Wijayadasa Rajapaksa would have been far more successful choices.

Hopefully this grotesquely anomalous situation will come to an end with a Presidentially-driven Cabinet reshuffle after the sociopolitical tectonic plates shift following the seismic shock of February 10th.

The choice or emergence of Mangala as ideologue reflects what the UNP has turned into: a large NGO or worse, an INGO. This is why it is in the electoral mess it is now in. What is most damaging is that its alien profile and policies are dragging down the SLFP with it, thanks to the influence of Mangala’s patroness, Chandrika, who believes in a strategic alliance between the SLFP and UNP, whatever the cost to either or both parties or the government as a whole.

The essential difference between President Sirisena, former President CBK and former president Rajapaksa, is that President Sirisena believes in a tactical but not strategic alliance with the UNP, though he might shift to a strategic alliance if the UNP leader and Prime Minister were Sajith Premadasa; Chandrika believes in a strategic alliance with the UNP and that too with Ranil or Mangala at the head of that party; Mahinda Rajapaksa will entertain only a tactical alliance with the UNP and that too under his and the JO-SLPP-SLFP’s dominance.

Chandrika’s strategic alliance with the UNP would be on a common ideological basis of neoliberal globalism, while Maithripala Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa’s tactical alliance with the UNP would be on the basis of Populism: ‘liberal nationalist’ in the case of Maithri and ‘patriotic-Statist’ in the case of Mahinda.

Social Democracy is the certainly most desirable ideological program, but it is not on the agenda in Sri Lanka today and has not been for a long time. Sadly, explicit Social Democracy has never taken root as a mass party-political phenomenon in this country (though one may well classify the LSSP as social democratic). It certainly will not present itself as an option before the presidential election of 2019 and the parliamentary election of 2020, still less the Provincial Council election of late 2018. Even more obviously there is no social Democratic option at the Local government election of Feb 10th.

Furthermore there is no social democratic trend in the global South today, nor in Eurasia. Even historically, explicit Social Democratic parties have taken root outside the global South, precisely in the countries of the developed world, be they in Europe or Australia/New Zealand.

Finally, given the global zeitgeist the dominant trend is clearly not towards Social Democracy, except in the UK and with greater success, in New Zealand. These hardly constitute a global trend.

The really existing choices in all three theatres as it were–globally, in the global South and Eurasia, and Sri Lanka itself—are on the one hand, neoliberal globalization/neoliberal democracy, and on the other, the ‘National-Popular’, manifesting itself concretely as various permutations and combinations of Populism, Statism and nationalism.

So the choice is either neoliberal globalism or some fusion of populism, statism and nationalism, or any two of the three.

Even for a social democrat like myself, those are the only realistic choices, living as do in Sri Lanka, in the Third World and in this point in time which is a time of transition from a post-Cold war unipolar hegemony to multi-polarity, marked by the contestation between a West in crisis and decline and a Eurasia (China + Russia) on the rise.

In most parts of the global South and Eurasia, a social democratic project must at this stage find accommodation within, and run through, a broader, more organic Populist, Statist or nationalist project.

For a social democratic or progressive, the choice cannot be neoliberal globalism. The task then is to shape the National popular project and outcome, helping reinforce the most progressive of kind of populism, statism or nationalism, or combination thereof.

Of course this choice cannot be based on pure idealism. One cannot simply choose the most leftwing of options even within populism, if it is not the one that has the best chance of defeating the main enemy, which is neoliberal globalization.

In Sri Lanka this means a choice between the UNP of Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mangala Samaraweera (a Premadasa UNP was not and would not be similarly classifiable as the vehicle of neoliberal globalism) on the one hand, and the Rajapaksa-led “Pohottuwa” (JO+SLPP) on the other, with the official SLFP as an intermediate and vacillating petty-bourgeois force which has to be won over or neutralized.

The progressive or social democratic project in Sri Lanka today would be to unite the JO-SLPP, the SLFP, the nationalist populists of the UNP and possibly the JVP, under the leadership of the JO-SLPP (Pohottuwa) or rather, its political line. If as is likely the reunification of the SLPP-SLFP cannot be as a single party, it must be as a front or bloc.  While we cannot tell which combination of personalities will lead, all that can be said for sure is that Mahinda must centrally be part of the equation, or it will not stand.

Let alone the victory of a progressive project, the very stability of this existing government, post Feb 10th until end-2019/2020 will crucially depend upon the realistic accommodation of Mahinda Rajapaksa in the political equation and architectural order.

These are all misnomers, the same way you call yourself a brilliant intellectual and outstanding diplomat . More likely you are an unprincipled careerist and an overrated narcissist.

Somebody described the rascal Mahendran as an economist. Is he ? Can anyone refer us to a book or even an article written by Mahendran on economics ?Everybody who studies economics at a university is not an economist. Everybody who holds a position in a foreign bank is not a outstanding banker. In the same way Mahendran fooled this government to employ him as the Governor , he may have fooled the bank to employ him( may be with a promise that he will attract all the black money from his UNP friends to that bank !)

Do you think Ranil or the UNP are ” neo-liberal elitist”? They have no philosophy or principle but to hang on to power as an ego trip and grab all the money they can get from party funds and other means. I think Ranil has written a book on Buddhism. What is neoliberal about the government run Srilankan airline and hanging on to UNP reins by corruption and by packing UNP committees with old Royalists? A trueneo liberal would have sold srilankan airline. A true liberal will not play dirty politics.

Elite ? Real elite must be turning in their graves that squeeky voiced grand children of Arrack renters are claiming to be elite(nobodies to somebodies!) Their true nature was exposed by the Bond scam. Thieves who are small time con-men and bare faced liars.

Patriotic is the sham word for medieval racism in Srilanka.

During Rajafucksas’ time how many mosques were vandalized? How many Muslim and Tamil businessmen were abducted and killed? How many Catholic priests were questioned by the dreaded CID of no return? How many journalists were killed?

Sorry Dayan. I’m not a racist so I will not vote for SLPP “Pohottuwa”. I thought Dayan was above all this. Until now.

Has he got a particular point of view other than monkey praising its own tail and his boss’s one. Has he ever made the readers to believe his position, accept his logic and evidence? It like hearing voices in his head and then he is compelled to download it on to this forum.

Dayan, if at all, may be praising his own tail You Kalaveddah is not only praising but worshipping your tail. How come you make many comment on each and every article in CT? How do you get all that time. Looks like you have anything else to do.

For social democracy to come to fruition, we cannot be like the rest of the global south. we have to be creative and innovative. For Lanka’s unique needs, best if JVP becomes the main party, and Rajapaksa+SLFP+SLLP(whatever) becomes the secondary party to deal with foreign money coming into the country. Al we need are ships to sail in and out of Sri Lanka (with global zeiteistism goods, robots and all). Let the global zeitgeists take hold in countries that have left their culture, heritage and holiness aside, and prefer AI (the stuff that UNP is all about and would like to achieve….on the blood, sweat and tears of the masses of course).
        *
For a small unimportant island such as our, our riches will be in catering to all aspects of globalization , whilst securing our unique heritage and cultural wealth. JVP will be the most apt to spread the wealth, and a neo-social Lankan culture can come about (no need for UNP Rs 1-million cakes to show culture).

Well said KOlla. To label the rajapaksians as patriots is to insult those silent men who served sans the fanfare. To label this man as a political commentator is a joke. He is just a party hack of the rajapakses.

It is proved beyond any doubt that the power hungry Rajapakshes are pseudo Patriots who wants the power only to loot the nation and transfer the wealth to their settled countries. Dayan is promoting them only to secure a job in the foreign ministry. The people who vote for these rouges should be fed punnakku.

You are dreaming to get a top job from MR and co .
Now all your dream is shattered.
Do not dream MR can become PM or president.
He should have gone with respect..
    But he did not.
Each day he loses his respect.
    People know that.

Intellects is not sufficient to success. Intellects are helpful if they are honest, duty bounded and open minded. Unfortunately, we have had good experience how the intellectuals like Dr.Dayan, Professor GL Peries, Professor Vitharana etc. advised Mahinda & Gotato use public funds to get into power, chemical and cluster weapons to massacre 40,000 innocent civilians and to murder those journalists who brought into public about the corruption in arms deal and bring our nation as a nation of failure and designating as war crime nation and human rights violating nation. The nation should never forget those so called intellectual who were responsible for bringing down to that low level. All this done for to get ministerial posts to misuse power and maximise their personal benefits. How on a world he joined EPRLF lead by a terrorist who was sponsored by Indian RAW which massacred hundreds of Sinhala civilians from the East during their period and now talk against India?

    • 2
      1

Ajith, son, no one used cluster bombs or chemical weapons in Sri Lanka (Just like Assad did not use Chemical weapons in Syria), it is neo-liberal propaganda that says so, which does not bring harmony between groups, tribes or nations. So, what I suggest to you is that if you really want good rapport among tribes practice that yourself first, rather than writing uninformed or wrongly informed nonsense. For a moment think about this, when is the last time you read in theses forums anyone blaming LTTE for all the civilians they killed by strategically placed time bombs and suicide bombs? Sinhala and Muslim people do not dwell on the unjusts that have been brought on them, it is time Tamils did that too and moved on.

        wannihami,
Denial of truth & lieing by Sinhalese is nothing new. There is concrete evidence for using those weapons. That is why there should be an international impartial investigation of war crimes and crimes against humanity was recommended by UNHCR. It is well known truth that was accepted by most of the Sinhalese leaders at some point that there were and there are unjusts against Tamils since 1948. Even Chandrika Bandaranaiyake recently stated that the demand for Separation is justifiable even now.

    Both sides are hypocritical

Are there patriots as you say ? Is making corrupt money by way of bribes and commissions patriotic ? Is appointing all your family members to high positions including an utter fool as chairman of Sri Lankan airline patriotic? what about maintaining a dual citizenship in a Western country as an escape possibility ? What about having bank accounts in foreign banks like in Dubai? What about living a high life with government assets ?What about the entire family living at government expense ? Were ambassadors Wickrmasuriya(USA) and that other rascal in Ukraine patriotic ?How about killing and intimidating journalists and other opposition ?These are not patriotic acts. These are actually cowards who become lions only with army protection

Fighting an internal seperatists group is not called patriotism in other countries. Remember both sides were born in this country What we had was a grave law and order issue with an internal terrorist group controlling part of the country. Was killing the JVP guys in the 1980s a patriotic act ?Rajapakses look good only because Chandrika and Ranil are such pathetic leaders.

Socialism is not an ideology for economic development.Capitalism is the most progressive economic development ideology. Socialism is an attempt to eat the cake before it is baked. If we want better living standards Capitalism is the only valid ideology although inequality is inherent in its functioning..Inequality increase is the price of economic growth driven by private economic enterprise. It also ensures freedom of the individual

Capitalism is the enrichment of the few at the expense of the rest. National resources belong to all and it is the duty of the state to cater to the needs of everyone, and that includes those who are incapable of contributing such as the old the infirm and the disadvantaged. If economic growth results in increase in inequality for whose benefit is growth delivering. We rather have no growth than allow a few to fatten at our expense. This kind of tripe is the philosophy of the UNP and its stooges who have no feeling for those disadvantaged and dispossessed.

Dayan the D….., you want us to go from Robbers to Murderers. Sorry Dayan the D….., we are better off with Robbers than Cold Blooded Murderers cum Robbers, but hang on, this time we are voting JVP in as a protest vote to all murderers and robbers.

By the time the General or Presidential election comes we may decide on the scale of purging done by both Robber parties and then decide whom to vote.

Sorry to say both your Pay Masters MARA/GORA who oversaw the cold blooded murders of Lasantha, Bharatha, Thajudeen, Ekneheliyagoda, Prisoners, Protesters and numerous other innocent civilians including North,East and A&B is not anywhere closer to the option to vote. The best resting place to both your Pay Masters is Welikada and you may please give them company.

    Dayan,
Obviously you are caught in a delusion. Your irrational musings and dragging Marx to justify them demonstrate how stupid you are. People know that nothing but a chameleon resembles your behavior. This time, all you want to do is destroy the foundations of the alliance between UNP and SLFP (Ranil and Maithree) and pave way for the ascendance of your pay masters: MaRa, GoTa, Basil and their family which may perhaps open some ministerial or diplomatic position for you in future. How despicable you are. I think it is not too late to strip you naked and let you walk once again somewhere near Kanatta – to repeat the treatment you received many years ago for your despicable behaviour.

    DJ:
Here is the prediction. SLFP and Sira are catching up but here are the results for Feb 10th.
    1. Colombo to UNP by a landslide
    2. UNP first in number of wards/seats/councils won
    3. SLPP or corrupt loud mouth group clinging to MR’s skirt second
    4. TNA and Muslim Tamil speaking Dravida Muslim parties will get most of the minority votes
    5. Colombo Mayor Rosy S

IF MR comes third his days are over. Might as well retire while people still love him. You can write about this if I am wrong on Feb 11th after 6:00pm when most election results will be out.

      Karadara-Dias,

“Colombo to UNP by a landslide”

Because there are lots of Donkeys walking on two legs in Colombo. Now majority in Colombo are Tamils (40%) and Muslims (20%).

        Eagle Eye

Your own figures Tamils are in a majority is debatable. Even if Tamils are close to 40% that makes the Sinhala/Muslim equation over 60% by which I maintain Tamils are not in the majority. I point this out because brain-damaged dregs like the yellow-clad Mullah Gandassara are bound to take this as a populae issue to be used next time when the law and order situation becomes lax. They will encourage the unemployed ruffians and others in the street – not excluding the warriors in the forces – to harm Tamils and steal their properties. These animals have growing experience in this game starting in 1958 and progressing to 1977, 1982 and the biggie in 7/83.

If Rosy becomes Mayor she will be the 1st Burgher – man or woman – to the post. Yes, she goes under a Sinhala name. It is time the fine Burgher community also get a place – after Pieter K. Colombo then can lay claim to being a truly cosmopolitan city.

Where did you get the idea “people still love him (Mara)” Even those close to him don’t love him. They fear him – for his past and present.
If he loses badly he will set the country afire with racial-religious
      riots throughout the country.

From the looks of it, the punnakku eating short-memoried yakkos will do a repeat 1970 show on Feb 10.

Real Intellectuals do not have to trumpet themselves. Maybe only Josephians need to do that because of a complex.

Predict the results on Feb 10th rather than engaging in semantics and obfuscations.

    UNP WINS
SLPP second but a distant Second. SLFP is catching up. and if SLFP beats POHOTTUWA, MR needs to shut the duck up and quit politics. Thajudeen’s ghost requires that much courtesy.

Do you know the meaning of word Cruelty. this is cruelty to wards society. How do they earn money. do they do anything useful to the country for the money they earn ?. Are sri lankan this stupid or they are stranded. Remember how “Mahamthma” is stealing Tsunami funds. Can you imagine the pathetic nature of those who were stranded because of Tsunami. After that they had stolen money even from FLOOD VICTIMS. Stay hungry, still you will be clean. Most of the politicians, U”NP, SLPP and SLFP a re like that. You also do not know the word shame. How was politics in Europe, you lived there was that this pathetic. In buddhist terms they do not know the word Lajjawa and Baya – Godly qualities. BS terminology. Come to the ground level. Sri lanka is the only country that is struggling to arrest the instigator, accuseds who who engaged in the worst known financial frauds (Twice or thrice) in the 70 year history of the country for three years. All the signs are it was pre-planned and the second robbery was a complete hit in comparison to the first one, yet they say we are clean and the president is another sloth. Equal thieves are previous govt..What is the crappy Ph D when he doe snot have any values and worse than a butcher.

All these terminology are crap. IT is produced by the materialistic west. They pursued the materialistic goals. Has any body one. they have lost the game and they have become a nuisance to the rest of the world. Only JVP has understood reality. I listed to a talk by AKD who said, Srilanka has been invaded financially, culturally and economically which is 100% true. There is a nice article in global research discussing how poor third world (Latvia as the example) had been destroyed in their banking, education, agriculture and many other sectors. Ranil and Mangala Are idiots. Mahinda Rajapakse was Ferdinand Marcos. YOu people are for the loot.

Dayan starts with a typical Dayan moan ~ “The fact that the key ideologue and propagandist of the Yahapalana government is Mangala Samaraweera speaks to the pathetic character of that government”.
Dayan is a self-appointed ideologue and propagandist of the MR-clan.
So you want a realistic accommodation of MR in the political equation? MR wants the top spot or else…….
We are more enlightened Dayan. We know both are bad but one needs white-vans while the other does not.

Managala Samaraweera does what the NGOs tell him..
He couldn’t careless about Neo Liberalism, or Democratic Socialism or anything else for that matter as long the UN resolutions on Tamil Homeland and Same marriages are implemented.
UNP is a Party which is loved by the NGOs
UNP boys at the Top agree One Hundred Percent with those UN Resolutions.
In addition the UNP heavies loves to make Money as we have noticed in the last three years.
And they are not Social Demcrats for sure..
What I can’t understand is what that Keselwatta Kid , his uncle Karu nad the Green Shirt Brigade doing at UNP rallies.
Shouldn’t they be at Social Democratic gathering with a bit of Patriotic Populism…

Mahinda’s recent popularity can not be ignored by the architects of the Yahapalanaya, if they look for real adjustments to it.
The more they criticize Mahinda the better it is for him and his political future! The recent negative utterances by My3pala and RanilW and their henchmen like Rajitha and Samaraweera have shot up his popularity to unprecedented levels.
Most people feel that they were taken for a ride by the Yahapalana duo in Jan 2015. They have done nothing to alleviate the socio-economic burden of the poor but still talk about resolving issues.
My3 says after Feb 10 he would take action. Mahinda asks why Feb 10? Take actions now; you are the executive President! The executive My3 has no answer! Why? because all these utterances are bogus; just to cheat the gullible voter!
RanilW has no life in the future; he with his Royal circle is finished with the Bond scam. If the justice system fail to punish them the people will do it, sooner or later. Nobody can save them from their downfall! They are now at their point of no return!

Greedy Thero is claiming he is everything. Now he is claiming he is a social democrat, even without understanding what it is. He is Marxist, he is Leninist, He Gramscist, and he is Castroist. And now he is Social Democrat too. The height of the madness is these all foolishness is summed under Pohottuwa.
The essential difference between President Sirisena, former President CBK and former president Rajapaksa, is that President Sirisena believes in a tactical but not strategic alliance with the UNP, though he might shift to a strategic alliance if the UNP leader and Prime Minister were Sajit Premadasa; Chandrika believes in a strategic alliance with the UNP and that too with Ranil or Mangala at the head of that party; Mahinda Rajapaksa will entertain only a tactical alliance with the UNP and that too under his and the JO-SLPP-SLFP’s dominance.
Let us see what gimmicks behind this:
This is absolutely a concocted rubbish. As a matter of fact, Chandrika can never get along with Ranil. When she was EP she sacked him from his legitimate PM Chair. The main reason was he never got along with her. Her only compromise here is, if she wants to live and die in Lankawe, she needs to see the Old Rowdy’s political power comes to an end. Even if one of the acolytes of Old Rowdy is left behind, it means life or death to Chandrika. Anything Thero weaving about Chandrika is absolutely his sour mouthed farcical. Mangala is not the ideologist of the Sharia-Yahapalanaya, though he is more liberal than any other one in the ruling and opposition clique, Thero citing. He was punished from Foreign Ministry to Finance Ministry because of the false stories written about him by like the Thero nasty Combo Media corrupted journos.

His initiation to get women to work in restaurant is shut by the Comedy, New King Social Democrat. Thero never mentioned a word about that so far. Now he is claiming, New King, Old King and he are the only Social Democrats. A man who could not support with Mangala to allow women to work in the restaurant is a Social Democrat? What the heck this Comedy understands about Social Democracy?

Let Us take another line from the same Para. Thero saying his rowdy bosses will make strategic alliances with Deal Dasa or Sajit Dasa. No questions on that; we all know the birds of a feather flock together. Deal Dasa and Sajit Dasa are ideal match for the Old Royal Rowdy Dasa. Further when, I was in Colombo, after burning the Jaffna Library, they were prefixed as the “Vazhai Thoodaththu Kaadaiyal”. Even recently somebody said that Ranil refused to sue Old King because Ranil was recommended in the Batalanda report to be Civic Rights removed, but Old Saved him. When that is the Colombo Media News, Thero is saying, Old will not make any alliance with Ranil. They all like that anyway. That is not the issue here. We all know Ranil went to New York and had argument with UNSG to save Old King. This was not a social service Ranil did for Old King. What happened is that time about 75 UNP MPs went to Old Royals side. Ranil thought that he never can become an EP or PM on his own, after that. The Old was looking for to buy the UNP with the left out 35 MPs and finish it off. So Old was offering a Prime Minister Post under a National Unity Government deal to Ranil.

Now Thero is fooling everybody, thinking nobody knows anything. But he never finished offering that post to Ranil because he was scared of his long term goal would be Japanized if he put Ranil on the PM seat. If he put Ranil as the PM under any contract, he might have ended up using Rapist Army to remove Ranil, when he wanted to take back the PM. Old King, at start, sounded like he wanted to give it to one of the Brother Princes the job. Allocating Prime Mister Post is one of the reasons why their Strategical alliances broke up between New King and Old King. New King wanted the premiership for him too. He did not give it even to the Brother Princes, but left it with somebody who was associated with drug smuggling. There was reason to encourage a guy to involved in drugs, catch him, then allow him to be as the PM. This is how the PM post can be plugged out from anybody who is holding it, without notice. So, now, the question is why the Brother Princes didn’t did not get but it was with another stupid criminal? The story eventually broke out that he did not want to promote Brother Princes, but the Son Prince on that. Even now, it is Son Princes leading the LG election talks, but most important Brother Prince is chased out of the country. That Old Guys’ Family was holding the 80 of the countries budgeted Money. Now the New King wants something like that. So he wants to hold all the Mangala’s Finance Ministry. To wedge that only Thero saying Mangala is the ideologist of Sharia-Yahapalanaya. May I know which theorist is saying all these Gilmarts are the Social Democracy? Can I also read that guy’s book, if somebody can name it?

DJ: WHY DO WE NEED PARTY POLITICS TO DEVELOP A VILLAGE. YOU ARE SUPPORTING THEIR EXPLOITATION OF THE LOCAL GOVT. IT IS ANOTHER IMPENDING DESTRUCTION OF THE INNOCENT SOCIETY. You are a socialist. Brag about Fidel Castro Who was intelligent enough to go against USA and he did it. Mahinda Rjapakse IS NO cASTRO. hE wasted money in order to get similar status and he made some of his friends relatives rich in that attempt. Mahinda Rajapakse’s PATRIOTISM was just like that of JRJ. MAKE TAMILS SUFFER, SINHALA PEOPLE WILL BE HAPPY. slpp IS lssp WHO DESTROYED sinhale after 1948 andmost others in slpp are thieves. What you are proposing is recycling of same old, outdated, obsolete and CORRUPT politicians who plunder the country to be recycled. Your political ideology is also corrupt western Ideology. You cannot propose a better ideology. Neo-liberalism destroyed the west. so they re all the industries except the expensive and very high tech manufacturing all are out sourced. Ranil want that. Education is a mess. I heard Viraj KAriavasam has transferred 60 teacher at once from Kelaniya Senethra Devi Pirivena. That is simply destruction. Probably he is christian. Mangala is contnuing IMF/MCC aganda so hands over sri lankan lands, harbours to Western companies for industrial zones or probably to grow up Californian rice which will we consume, we will grow their new improved hybrid tea. Improved rubber. CBC wants Sinhala buddhists oppressed. So, it is happening. Ranil and RAVI the LIAR bankrupted the Banking system and PTL used Rs One billion to shred documents. can not you propose some new group of politicians. india and china had better empires who kings always questioned themselves when some disaster happenEd to the county. not the fake patriotism or neo-liberalism of true alIbaba ranil. REMEMBER RANIL WICKRAMSINGHE IS A TYPICAL ALIBABA, A PSYCHOPATH, A MAFIA LEADER – CHECK THE DEFINITIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS, NOW HE HAS ENOUGH SHAME TO SAY I DID NOT DO ANYTHING. AND PROPOSE REMEDY MEASURES. THOSE WHO SUPPORT THIEVES, ALIBABAS, MAFIA LEADERS HOULD BE LIKE THEM.

Once again our intrepid Doctor peddles his usual gobbledegook desperately clinging to the faint hope that the ageing liberator will reprise and reward our resident ‘intellectual’ with a post that will give him a platform for one last hurrah in the diplomatic salons of our foreign friends (where DJ will delightfully recall the great Geneva coup of 2009).

How cruel it would be if our fickle electorate once again decides that anything is better than a lapsed rogue. Can it be true that no one writes to the great liberator anymore?

    dont keep quoting papa mervin
we know where he started and where he ended
finally the booze got the better of him a nd ranil had to come to his assistance in his last days you resent this fact that is why you are so anti ranil and clinging on to mr like a drowning man clutching at a straw

to compare sajith with mangala is like comparing a jackass to a race horse
mangala is a worthy successor to ranil and if he contests in 2020 he has aa great chance of winning as he has more friends than enemies and is not tainted by scams
his sexuality which he does not hide unlike some others of his ilk is not a liability as many monks and priests would prefer to support rather than oppose him
barack obama became usa,s first black president and it would be great if this brilliant speaker and great political strategist became sri lankas first openly lgbt president

If any government can’t implement total Secularism and keep politics and religion apart, then forget it not SLFP ,UNP, SLPP or 1000,000 JVP like put together can never be successful in developing Sri Lanka.

    NV,

Sorry to disappoint you. Generally, I do not read his this D…..’s article beyond the headline. The pic of him itself puts me off, so no chance of proceeding any further and I consider it an utter waste of my precious time, reading his crap.

I always say this, a person who cannot identify the God Fathers behind all the murders and atrocities during the dark ages of MARA/GORA regime, that persons’s doctorate is not worth the paper it is written on, so why read a two legged i….’s article.

    Sorry again.

No matter what had happened .

What matters to me is , after Mr.President Maithreepala , this is the first ever period this nation has experienced a relatively secured environment .It has seen people creating racism and arson attackers been punished and we have observed an honest suppression of extremism of all religious groups ,Racists and bigots , first time you can see people who could not step on the streets because they are born different, today walking freely .I agree it is very little done, but a good start and next must be a total elimination. Of bullying and hate.
This is the priority ,then the rest to implement will be smooth.
I as a Muslim ,Minority from a group that had been a continuous target of racial slurs ,hate & my community’s every human right had in past being violated from practicing ,to dietary ,to attire ,to economy . is wise enough to vote for the hand ,than blindly rush to suicide with unknown .

What is the guarantee you will enjoy even his little peace by voting back the same lot who responsible for our misery? ,or s party with a history of violence not once but twice ,? they did not spare even their own ,what guarantee they will spare you.
It is almost impossible to change ideologies implemented in minds.

    Remember curiosity killed the Cat.
