The Opposition’s Platform & Why Mahinda Is Winning

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

I suppose it takes the Sri Lankan Opposition to make the slogan of a common candidate, a source of fissure and the search for unity a source of division. But that’s Sri Lanka, or rather, that’s the Sri Lankan Opposition. It would be fun to have good old CBK as common candidate though I doubt that even the Sri Lankan Opposition is going to do something that corny. CBK would be an entertaining, hard hitting public speaker on a broad opposition platform. As candidate though, she’d be able to achieve something really difficult: poll far fewer votes than even Ranil Wickremesinghe. Not many could match that, unless you count the good Rev Sobitha. CBK is that out of sync with the zeitgeist.

Chandrika can peel off some SLFP MPs but she cannot break the SLFP voters away from Mahinda Rajapaksa. She may have a few barons but not the SLFP serfs, who are accustomed to loyally serving whichever ‘royal’ family runs the party. In any case, the SLFP grassroots actually like and respect Mahinda Rajapaksa much more than they do the deposed queen.

President Rajapaksa will be re-elected this time, despite economic disaffection and even if the entire electoral process were to be freely observed by, say, the Commonwealth, because of the factor of ideological and cultural hegemony (to use Gramscian terminology), i.e. the impression and impact he has made he has on the nation’s consciousness. While that hegemony is mightily disseminated and reproduced by the State’s ideological apparatuses, that factor of agency is not the secret of his ideological-cultural hegemony. The secret of that hegemony is that he has a mode and message, a demeanor and discourse that are organic (if one may lapse again into Gramscianism)—far more so than that of the opposition parties, jointly or singly.

RCSSSS RanilThis doesn’t mean that there is no significant discontent over economic and governance issues. What this does mean is that Mahinda Rajapaksa’s mode and message succeeds in transcending or deflecting this disaffection away from himself, in the popular consciousness. His image and discourse constitute Kevlar body armor. This isn’t magic. If electoral change could be read off from economic disaffection, most of the world would have leftwing or left of center governments, but the status quo is protected by thicker walls of consciousness and it takes enormous ideological and cultural labor and resultant political re-positioning to translate economic disaffection into regime change.

In Sri Lanka there is a half successful experiment the Opposition could have built upon but will not. That is the almost scientific process of the emergence of an antibody that has been going on for fourteen years in Hambantota, where young Premadasa has faced the Rajapaksas as electoral opponents in their own heartland, held his own and even raised the UNP’s percentage to the cost of the Rajapaksas’ own. That is nothing less than the generation of an effective antibody from within the Rajapaksa ideology. Now as in medicine, an antibody does not a serum make—much more work has to go into it to fashion the necessary synthesis to prevail over the dominant organism. But it is the indispensable basis for an effective serum.

The so-called joint opposition has chosen to ignore this sustained if limited success story of Hambantota. Instead it has chosen to foreground a platform of constitutional change. The contrast with Mahinda’s appeal could not be starker. His appeal is profoundly social and personal at one and the same time. The Opposition’s pitch is neither. Mahinda’s vibe is one of strength and warmth. The Opposition’s platform is bloodless, disembodied, top-down. Mahinda is organic (as is Sajith Premadasa). The opposition platform is dis-organic.

The Opposition’s platform is also easy to dismantle. When a party that introduced and had enjoyed Presidential office for 17 years ( the UNP), and is run by someone who is a failed presidential candidate twice over ( Ranil), is joined by a two term ex-President (CBK), in denouncing the presidential system and pledging its abolition, it comes across as a clear case of sour grapes rather than enlightened reform.

As for the pathetically illogical counter argument that the Presidential system was OK until the abolition of the term limits and the independent commissions, surely the remedy is to reintroduce the term limits and the independent commissions, abolishing the 18th amendment, rather than the Presidential system itself.

The people have no stated or manifested problem with the Presidential system. What the Opposition fails to get is that the masses like and trust their elected Presidents much more than they do the parliamentary representatives. The people are not going to transfer power from the Presidency to a probable bickering bunch of parliamentarians. Nor are they going to risk the whip hand in a divided legislature being held by the fickle TNA and SLMC.

The people do have a problem with bad governance, cronyism, nepotism and economic hardship. The Opposition’s manifesto does not foreground these issues and suggest a credible solution.

Mahinda is closer the sentiments of the people than is the Opposition. He strikes a more positive chord. He resonates. By contrast, the opposition’s platform is pretty much a Colombo civil society construct. That, and not the 18th amendment, is why he is going to win.

The parliamentary election could however, be a different ballgame, especially if the UNP is under a different leadership; an organic one positioned in the centre-space between the alternatives of Mahinda’s conservative nationalist-populism and the JVP’s radical populism.

Dayan Jayatilleke knows on what side his bread is buttered! He will never get a job in the MEA under Madam CBK, but he may if Karu or Jarapassa becomes Prez again! There is absolutely NO DOUBT that CBK is the best MAN and Best woman to defeat Mahinda Jarapassa with support of the joint opposition – minorities, women, JVP, JHU, UNP etc.

Dayan Jayatilleka is a disingenuous clown. He is also intellectually and morally bankrupt to say that CBK is not the best candidate to defeat Mahinda Jarapassa in 2015.

Will a Jayalalitha happen to Rajapakses if they win and the UN investigations find the big boys of the regime guilty of killing Tamil civilians indiscriminately?

If Dayan and Mahinda Rajapaksa try to paint CBK as corrupt due to land transfers in the Water’s Edge, well, let’s take a look at the Jarapassa FAMILY of corrupt and criminal looters of the national wealth and their cronies and their KINGSBURY – BLING- SBURY car racing Lifestyle!

Namal with his sports car circus, Basil with his luxury hotels built on stolen lands with stolen funds, Shiranee Jarapassa’s corrupt brother with his stolen gold watch at Sri Lanka Airlines etc. etc..
Then lets count who is accountable for the vast majority of corrupt deals?!

Who thought DJ is a donkey ?

He is from what he writes here. Entire world is rising up against the brutal regime. All thought who were devided seem to have common view about the hour of need – which is to drive away the thuggish Rajapakshes, but this bugger DJ is stuck only on his VERBAL diarrhea which has no basis.
Once upon a time the bugger was respected by some fractions of the society, but since he has been deaf and blind not to differenciate the current problems – clear almost everyone, the man is a PINGONEK.

You are naive. He is only on his side. I will bet my bottom dollar that the wily Mahinda has invited him for a meal and promised him a diplomatic posting. He will not get it after the election. However hopr springs eternal and there is no limit to shamelessness.

It is obvious Dr. D.J is in the side of Mahinda Family. He knows very well that he has no other place to go. Mahinda’s only hope is racism card. The opposition should go deeper into the public (Sinhalese masses) with facts and truths about Mahinda’s cunning plan to destroy the Nation for the sake of his Power hungry motives.

So called political analyst that saved the nation in 2009 to sees things totally the opposite side of the average is beyond all bearing. I hate this way of thinking. I thought Mr Intelligent would finally see it and come to the point to call the spade a spade. His verbal stuff contains nothing but supporting Raja in power or fall on the the side of Premadasa Junior.
How come the man to disgrace former president CBK. At least a man of this level should have some sort of respect to a former president regardless of what her terms brought tot ht ecountry. People those who would go against ballige puthas- Rajapakshes will support UNP, DP, UPFA CBK fraction and all other constiutent parties of new coalition which is being made these days.

CBK (SLFP fraction)+ UNP+ DP(SF)+ JHU RATHENA+ SOBITHA supporters+ JVP will make it over 60% of voters.
Winning against Ballige putha Rajapakshes is KAJU kanawa wage deyak ( very easy task).
Come ahead of us, we will see the fall of Rajapakshe supporters asking what he brought to the country new companies… like.. asking how can he prove the MULITI BILLION LEVEL abuses of Rajapakshe people. All these should be NATIONALIZED to sending the man and his bunch to PRIsonS: Alone with the money they grabed can give an economic rise to the poor. Alone pay hikes can be generated from that.

    Dayan is being cruel here.

Poor Ranil just published his brand spanking new pre Kandyan Constitution to rule our inhabitants.

    And Dayan writes him off.

Ranil even went the extra distance to dis the Brits for not allowing us full Independence.

To do that after wining and dining with the Diaspora Dudes and their Conservative Govt buddies, . is really serious,..

Did they serve him Pommy Pale Ale with Fries and Mushy Peas instead of giving him a good Heston Vindaloo with a classy New Zealand Sav Blanc..

    BTW,

Did the Vellalas have self rule before Keppitipola?…

    Dayan,

    You are dead right.

No one can beat MARA THE SWINDLER TURNED MURDERER/DICTATOR by elections. We all know how he supposed to have won the previous Presidential election by incarcerating the Elections Commissioner and the Commissioner came out only to announce the final result with the famous “ATHATHIYA” Story.

So even if D.S.Senanayake contests with MARA only MARA will win.

AND YOU DAYAN STINK WORSE THAN MARA FOR GIVING CREDENCE TO ALL ATROCITIES OF MARA. HOW MUCH ARE YOU GETTING PAID FOR YOUR DIRTY JOB? DO SOMETHING DECENT FOR YOUR LIVING,WILL YOU..DR.

    DJ,

Let me remind you, Ranil almost won in 2005 beating MR. If not for the LTTE he would have won. This time, NO IDPs, NO LTTE controlled areas. So people will vote in their millions. Ranil is the best for the job.

In 1999 too Ranil came close to winning. Chandrika hired a LTTE suicide bomber to win sympathy. She narrowly won with sympathy.

So both times Ranil came very close to winning and LTTE stopped him. Not any more.

Ranil is third time lucky. Please place trust in him. If Ranil is so bad, why keep attacking him! That proves Ranil is winning. Mahind only fears Ranil because he has NO COPE corruption allegations, no CROSSOVER bad history. Ranil is Mr. Clean. Exactly what the doctor prescribed for SL.

I too believe, Ranil, with Sajith at his side, will beat this corrupt regime, if he can get his message and policy across to the people. That will be difficult because most of the newspapers are Rajapakse controlled and TV channels are terrified of the thugs. Like it or not, we need the West for our economic well being, and Ranil is liked by them while the Rajapakses for their vile West bashing is not. Sadly for us, if the UN investigators’ report is savage, there will be sanctions harming us or worse, Gota and/or Mahinda will be hauled across to Hague and imprisoned.

I think we should predict the result like a coin toss.

If Tamils are lying about 40,000 Tamils dead during “last stages of the war”, then Mahinda Rajapaske will win.

If Tamils are not lying – Ranil wins.

Why did “organic” Sajith balk at the suggestion of contesting as the CM candidate of the Southern PC?

Scared??? If he is scared to run in his own backyard, how can he contest in the whole country?

By the way, has Sajith managed to complete that degree from LSE, that he lied he already completed ?

Also isn’t it funny that Dayan was with Premadasa Sr. when he was butchering the youth of the south. Then with Mahinda when he was butchering the youth of the north. Now he wants another Premadasa? Who is left to butcher?

Dayan is a senior analyst regardless of what many say, but he does not know how to use his experience. Now it is too late. He is fallen in the pit as nobody would hail him as an honest person. He could know this before lying with dogs. Now he has to complain on ticks, but still his mind set is so that he cant allow to call spade a spade. He is just an another headache to th enation so a the Mervin has been. I meant not Dayan s Father but Mervin the vermin who is the fakel eater of Rajapakshes.

You are scared that Chandika will contest and defeat Mahinda.

Sorry to say that you are a shameless person.

  • 3

    Dayan:

I agree with you entirely on some of the following and I give my reasons below which is nothing new.

” President Rajapaksa will be re-elected this time, despite economic disaffection i.e. the impression and impact he has made he has on the nation’s consciousness.

But one correction ” Nations Consciousness” should be changed to “Nations lack of Consciousness”

While that hegemony is mightily disseminated and reproduced by the State’s ideological apparatuses, that factor of agency is not the secret of his ideological-cultural hegemony. The secret of that hegemony is that he has a mode and message, a demeanor and discourse that are organic —far more so than that of the opposition parties, jointly or singly.

*** The above is a mighty frank and onerous admission which you yourself have some affinity with despite you recent pretences to the contrary. He has an affinity with the 20 million born RACISTS and no one plays the Race Card better than him and the mode and delivery of his hate message is more potent than any one else in the Country and he makes the Opposition members look amateurish.

*** Ranil This doesn’t mean that there is no significant discontent over economic and governance issues. What this does mean is that Mahinda Rajapaksa’s mode and message succeeds in transcending or deflecting this disaffection away from himself, in the popular consciousness.

Here you are beginning to wobble and the plain truth is that in Sinhala Lanka elections are not won on bread and butter issues. Elections are won on Race issue and Race Issue alone and we have seen that for the last 64 years.

But for some reason you have stepped back from issuing your usual Warning signs which are getting far more frequent and menacing. Just take the statement from the new UNHCR chief who GOSL tried to court but miserably failed. I am sure even you would have noticed that he was prepared to listen to Ananthi and ignore GOSL. I can only assume that you are re prepared to accept the battering which is about to blow Sinhala Lanka off.

*** If electoral change could be read off from economic disaffection, most of the world would have leftwing or left of center governments, but the status quo is protected by thicker walls of consciousness and it takes enormous ideological and cultural labor and resultant political re-positioning to translate economic disaffection into regime change.

I take issue with you on the above as that only applies to true Democracies and not to a dictatorship like Sinhala Lanka. Is MR any different from Mugabe ( where the economy is dire straights ).

Dayan, I hadsome regard for you during the time you were representing Sri Lanka at UN, defending our country against Human right commission, despite your past dark record in association with Ranasinghe Premadasa. But your conduct after the war has to be highly condemned. A person of your caliber should not have any difficulty in understanding the damage the Rajapakse’s have done to our country. More than all the other bad things you should know that they have hijacked our Judiciary completely by appointing their own men as judges. Police, Armed Forces and Administrative Service have been politicized as never before. Nepotism and corruption has never been like this. You know very well what is happening in our diplomatic missions. It has gone for dogs. Despite all these you have been very lenient in criticizing activities of Rajapakse’s. We could see the same behavior in Sajith Premadasa, Tiran Allas, Victor Ivan and many more, which have got huge benefits from this regime or having some understanding with them. Most of Dayan’s articles were bent on criticizing or condemning UNP leaders and whatever the opposition doing. It is clear to all readers what his agenda is. If Dayan or anyone is honest, sincere and love the country, he should use all resources and energy to save the country from becoming a Dictatorial regime like North Korea. Immediate threat to our country is from Present rulers not from Ranil, Chandrika or Karu. But some of the intellectuals in our country are so selfish, they always bow down to temptations from the evil empire.
Victor Ivan has written “ Chaura Regina” a notorious book condemning the period Chandrika was the President. How many books he should write now to describe the undemocratic acts, abuse of power happening now? Previously Dayan has written plenty of articles condemning Ranil and predicting he would never win elections. But now he says Ranil is better and Chandrika is worst.. It is no secret that Dayan only promotes Sajith. Premadasa. But Dayan knows very well that Sajith is aligning himself with Sinhalese nationalists and Tamils or Muslims will never support him. Further Sajith has been very careful in condemning Rajapakse’s. Sajith’s occupation during last decade has been attacking other UNPers, just like Dayan His only aim is to get the UNP leadership at any cost. He shows his capabilities only in singing and not in working as a member of the opposition of a country going towards dictatorship. On the other hand, politicians like Mangala, Ravi, Ranil, Karu and even Chandrika has always been forthright and never hesitated to create awareness among masses the is happening in our country.
Dayan Jayatilake should examine his consciousness to see what his real motives are. He still could be a Statesman and an Intellect if he does his best to defeat the dictator by supporting whoever selected as the common candidate of the opposition. Anyone criticizing the common candidate is doing a great disservice to our nation. It will only allow present regime to ruin the country some more and take our country towards dictatorship.

I wish our country folks put all our politicos, Ranil, CBK, Karu, CP, LSSP, JVP, Hela Urumaya, BBS, Hakim, Thonda, TNA+LTTE, Awamangala, MR & His gangasters including helicopter owning Sajin, Generalismo, all of these kujitha gang, all of them in a ship and take it to international waters and blow it up. Dear Dayan,
you have no rope to hang on! The opposition will not touch you with a barge pole! Mahinda will nudge you with a barge pole! Still you are suckling the…. peanuts! How many jobs were you given? How many times have you been sacked (spta out) after chewing the betel! Please give up suckling peanuts!

There is no doubt you have talent to speak and write. Unfortunately it is not your honest opinion! Your opinion changes with the moods of MR! Make use of your gab honestly, without being used by promiscuous politicians! You then automatically become promiscuous! More of a ‘paraya’ type!

We all adored you and Rajiv during the peak of the war! Now all that is gone! You have been used, spat out, but you still don’t want to believe that you are an orphan! Lack of insight I think, in parallel with a psychosis!!!

Dayan seems not up to speed these days.

May be he can’t cope up.

How can he, when there are so much happening in the grand Opposition.

Now even more new players like CBK Faction and Fonseka Party are officially in the UNP, TNA Diaspora Alliance.

What a formidable gathering of Intellect, Expertise and Good Governance practitioners…

Fonseka issued a warning yesterday to our Cops to remove all Mahinda Photos from SSPs Offices.

If not they will have to face dire consequences.

Just imagine what Fonseka will do to real Mahinda, And it will be bubbly in every Diaspora household…

Managla must have carried the message from his Boss all the way to Singapore that Fonseka will be sitting in Gota’s Office after January.

And Managala has changed his mind and not leaving the UNP , because CBK is now in the Alliance.

JVP is busy on plan B with the help of the BASL.

But they are now going to take on Kanishka for giving the contract to refurbish Dayan’s old Dig in Geneva.to a Diaspora Renovations Company.

I thought Anura has already an Official partner of the UNP, TNA, Diaspora Alliance…

DJ backs the winning horse no matter how unfairly the horse runs. Principles or fairness be damned, there is money to make here and DJ knows.

Unfortunately the bad horse will win the next time also. The opposition will be still trying to work out who the common candidate is going to be even after the next presidential election. RW certainly is the man who will deliver the next presidency to the utterly corrupt MR Mafia.

Sad indeed but the writing which we all ignore is on the wall already, another horrific term of MARA misrule.

Unthinkables have happened. Ranil is not a candidate unless the united opposition wants him to be. So is CBK. Aturaliye Ratana of the JHU and Sobhita have agreed. Even Champika Ranawaka is not supporting MR. There is every indication that the JVP and the TNA will be part of an opposition coalition. The Sinhala Buddhist vote is split. The Muslims will overwhelmingly vote for the opposition candidate, thanks to the BBS. The Catholics are unhappy with MR’s fraudulence about the Papal visit. This is not just a gathering storm. It has the signs of a tsunami. Dayan, being intelligent, is not a little worried. This article is sure proof of that.

Dayan, your brilliance is marred by your partiality, and abject soft peddling of the serious misdeeds of those in power.

Absolutely no doubt that you possess rare brilliance, and absolutely no doubt you bring all that to shame through your patent partiality.

Ever heard of with whom the buck stops? However much you may try to absolve, someone has to take overall blame. Is it too much to ask you to understand that???
