The Peeping Tom Of Our Republic

By Grusha Andrews

There is a popular folk saying in Sinhalese that reads: “even if you take the coconut scraper to Europe, all you can do with it is scrape coconuts”. Our grand mothers who lived in an era where travelling to Europe was a mark of social mobility tried to infer that a limited man is a limited man in spite of changing location or position. Maithripala Sirisena, who showed his treacherous, undemocratic disposition by the coup he implemented against our very democracy proved our collective grannies correct when he stooped to a new low. In fact he stooped to the abysmal depths of human indecency showing the poverty of his soul. Yesterday at the Mahinda- Maithri rally at Battaramulla, he referred to Prime Minister Ranil Wikremesinghe and his political associates as “butterflies” – a derogatory term used to refer to gay men in the Sri Lankan context.

When this despicable, ill-disciplined statement which insults the very office he holds was delivered by the President of our republic, all the politicians visible in that video were laughing like hyenas, clapping. They were, namely, Mahinda Rajapaksa, Dinesh Gunawardena, Bandula Gunawardane, Susil Premjayanth and Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene. As expected the crowds gathered at this meeting were enthralled and they were screaming in ecstasy with their hands raised to the sky. To speculate the homosexuality of another, to insult a person based on that and to state that a weakness or a character flaw of a person is due to his or her purported sexual orientation shows how uneducated, imbecilic and narrow minded our President is.

So This Is The “Clash Of Cultures”!

To discriminate or debase another based on their race, religion, caste, sexual orientation or place of origin is a violation of their fundamental rights. Further it is lowly, unsophisticated, cruel and an act that can be carried out by an uncultured coward. By his own admission Sirisena confirmed that there were irreconcilable “cultural differences” between himself and Wickremesinghe. Sirisena was clearly correct. To keep what’s in the bedroom inside the bed room is cultured. To watch sexual intercourse through key holes and to fantasize of the same is uncultured. What we have in our republic is not a President but a Peeping Tom.

The Facebook page “Dedunu Sanwaada”, in an eloquent post summarizes the social tragedy of this uncultured-ness in the following manner:

“Our society that calls itself moral suffers from generalized sexual frustration. We are all experiencing it. While fathers sexually molest their daughters, clergy also molest children. Authorities seek sexual bribes from mothers to admit children to schools. The law maker politicians are even more sexually frustrated. They take sexual bribes even to enter a name to an electoral register. Meanwhile allegations of sexual exploitation are aimed at the police and the armed forces. Further ,the traditional family structure is also eroding. Even the judiciary that exists to deliver justice is full of sexual misconduct. On the surface all these appear as unsolvable problems. When the deer ransack the’ chena’s and escape ,the farmer, out of his frustration beats up the deer skin at home  to vent his anger. The homosexual in our society is the scapegoat or all of society’s apparently unresolvable ills”.

So When Did Sirisena “Choose” His Sexuality?

From the sardonic statement he made and the sarcastically triumphant laughter he displayed, it appears that Sirisena thinks that homosexuality is a laughable weakness. He seems to believe that it’s a “faulty choice” and hence a laughable. This begs the question: does this uneducated President truly believe that sexual orientation is a conscious choice? That at the dawn of adolescence humans choose to be hetero or homosexuals? Like you choose between a blue shirt and a pink shirt? If so when did Sirisena choose his sexuality?

Further, as stated by Sirisena, he first approached Karu Jayasuriya to become Prime Minister. Is he sure that Jayasuriya is heterosexual? How about Sajith Premadasa whom he also approached? Is he sure that Sajith is heterosexual? Was he a Peeping Tom at their doors too? What about Dinesh Gunawardena clapping away? Has he no brother, no relative who is a homosexual? Is Sirisena confident that the General Secretary of Pohottuwa, G.L. Peiris, sitting there is conclusively heterosexual?

Also, is Sirisena quite sure that no child or grandchild of his will ever identify themselves with the LGBTQ+ community? What guarantee do any one of us have that someone we love may never have a sexual orientation different to our own? Is he going to get on a stage and laugh at his own if this hypothesis became a reality? Further, is it a part of the sexuality of the President to have sexual intercourse with government servants in his office, to give them opportunity to earn irregular monies, to offer them trips overseas and to betray the mandate of the people when his political foes get their hands on such evidence and black mail him? Sirisena, remember – fate is more unexpected, dramatic and full of poetic justice than you think. Think a thousand times before you insult another human being!

Return Of The Butterfly?

Maithripala Sirisena, who was but a sniffling political caterpillar metamorphed in to a golden butterfly with the help of the UNP, SLFP and numerous other social forces. He did so in the face of a possible coronation of a Rajapaksa looming in the background. Sirisena who is dreaming of high flying in 2019 like a butterfly will no doubt be squashed like a mosquito in the palm of Mahinda Rajapaksa in no time. Today he proved his immense contribution to the breakdown of the co-habitation of the Yahapalana Government. He proved that he is a foul tongued, putrefied speaker in the ranks of Mervyn Silva, Ossie Abeygunasekera, Rajitha Senaratne, Chathura Senaratne and Pavithra Wanniarachchi. Little does he realize that he cannot affect Ranil who is a master at emotional management with a lowly, uneducated statement such as this. Conversely, may be all Ranil needs is to do absolutely nothing in the face of this crisis as he is accustomed to. This unsuccessful, shameless, uneducated President may bring upon himself his self-destruction without outside help.

However, no matter how many key holes he peeps in to, the butterfly called Maithripala Sirisena is most unlikely to prolong his life cycle.

It is no secret that some of the Buddhist monks have been practicing homo sexuality since the days of the Buddha. Even today they are the ” masters of the art”! I can remember, one of our English writers – may be J Wijethunga in his “Grass for My Feet” – saying that the Buddhist temples are the breeding grounds of homosexuality! Wonder if Sira has had some experience!

      Grusha Andrews,

It’s a good piece where you have hit all our cultural/societal anchor points in this debate ……… about sexuality.

“Sirisena confirmed that there were irreconcilable “cultural differences” between himself and Wickremesinghe.”

But ………. we should realise all these are thrown out by Sirisena as diversionary tactics to cover his naked desire for a second term.

Srisena had no problem with Ranil ………. until Ranil informed Sirisena that he himself intends to run for the presidency.

I don’t know much about Lankan politics …….. but feel that people should keep their eye on the ball …….. and concentrate on Sirisena’s real motives ……… and not get sidetracked by their diversionary tactics …… a la Trump

Just count the number of reasons Sirisena has given so far for the putsch ………. that’s a page directly out of Trump’s playbook

I was very impressed with Ranil’s interview with the Indian journalist ……… very mature without any wild accusations ………. a class act!

But class and majority of Lankans are mutually exclusive ………. people of Sirisena/Rajapakse ilk know how to milk it

And now is the season of baser-instincts ……… not just in Lanka.

People reap what they sow ……… if I were you I wouldn’t be too perturbed ………. Sirisena/Rajapakse have to manage the economy …….. and I’m sure their collective intellectual firepower is more than a match for the task

What happened to Sirisena was that he could not bear the fame and world wide publicity all what he got at once after becoming country’s president. Who was behind all of them was Ranil Wickramasinghe, but he could open his mouth being a PM of the country. He let it go, and media painted the picture in favour of Sirisena only.
UNP leader even took all measurese his men not to attack Sirisena even if he himself dropped down all the abusive critics against UNP. Like for example the manner, ballige putha Sirisena sacked that FCID head Ms Dilrukshi Wickramasinghe, the world questioned if that was right going by the pledges Sirisena made. There, Ballige putha lied ot the nation, as if Mr Wickramasinghe was the person who stood on the way not being able to continue with investigations against Rajapakshe high crimes.
Sirisena has never had any kind of foreign visits made prior to his presidency. He cant speak any foreignlangagues. So no wonder he would have been isolated in the culture Mr Wickramasinghe associates with.
Not an edcuated family. either. Wife looks as if Kussiamma of a village corner WHO KNOWs nothing but to cook for his husband only. All in all, it became as if Katussa wore gold around his neck ( a common parlance being heard from us in SL from that day on).

Grusha Excellent. Thank You for being outright, honest and for unvarnished presentation of facts. MS is the current face of Lankan politics. For all those years he has been in politics this is the true level of maturity of a so called family man. A narrow minded person biased of race, religion, society and sex. A person who has no respect for individual rights. A person going around pretending to be a patriot, showing him self as a family man when opportunity comes and talks like a person who is about to drop his hidden knife to deliver justice. Turns out an opportunist who exploited his own citizens by putting up as a “knight in shining armor”, A person who seems to lie effortlessly and rarely speak truth, selfish, self centered, do not mean anything he say and do things what he promised not to do and one more from the cesspit. Who,s is cursed here country???? people?????? I guess both.

“Today he proved his immense contribution to the breakdown of the co-habitation of the Yahapalana Government.”
President Sirisena told the 6.2 million voters who elected him to create a ‘Yahapalana’ Government how he tried to salvage it and failed and eventually why he decided to appoint Mahinda Rajapakse as PM. As it became clear from his speech, Mahinda Rajapakse is not his first choice. Both Karu and Sajith revolted against Ranil’s leadership but when it came to the crucial moment they back down. May be Ranil had their files with him.

      Eagle Eye:-
Don’t You know that Mahinda has the Files that Involve Maithripala in the Crimes, Committed in the Rajapakse Era?

Sirisena & Rajapakse coup was planned very well for long and this was told by Mahinda’s favourite son Namal in India. Whatever the lies spread Mahinda Family and Sirisena betrayed Srilanka, betrayed Buddhism, betaryed humanity, betrayed rule of law. They tried to woo Tamil and Muslim Parliamentarians to get their numbers paying 500 million dollars each failed completely and one of the UNP MPs crossed to Mahinda to get ministerial post returned back. Today I read an speeach by President Sirisena saying that he wanted to slove Tamil problem, he wanted to release Tamil Political Prisoners but Ranil was the barrier and thatswhy he gave prime Minister post to solve the Tamils political problem. Even Namla & Gotapaya are telling that they will release all political prisoners and find a political solution. He forgot Mahinda had two third majority in the parliament, both were in the same government for 10 years and how they took all the rights of the Tamils and Muslims during that period. They massacred over 50000 Tamils. There should be limit for lieing. It is the UNP should decide who should be their PM. Mahinda formed a new political party leaving the SLFP and contested election under that party for local government election against to SLFP. When did SLFP joined with SLPP? Did Mahinda reapplied for membership of SLFP? I know Mahinda also told he had files of all. Even Sirisena said he had files of Mahinda? Why couldn’t he use those files for last three years?

Corruption in politics was always there but this Appaya took it to a level that no one imagined it could be taken.

    What’s wrong with this picture?

“I was offered Rs. 500 mn to join Govt: Range Bandara “

“An experienced healthcare service provider Asiri Hospitals has acquired the Hemas Southern Hospital for a value of Rs.450 million.”

I enjoy the writing as much as hid staunch criticism of M&S …already M&s has been sidelined now ..
He will never get respect from MR …
As he went from one devil to another ..
Ranil will get on well with all but not MR .
Sooner M&s will be wiped out .
Did m&s see Ranil doing homosexuality?
He must have evidence ..other wise; you must be punished for slandering

      Dear sir/ madam,
I was skimming through these comments .Your short comment deeply touched my heart.
I can understand how you must be pained, worried, uncertain, confused- processing the information that your son is gay. As hard as it may be to accept that fact, and no matter how much you worry about him, please love him, say it if you can and show it everyday.
It is not a reality we are trained or culturally conditioned to face.
But it is within all of our souls to love all beings without discrimination.
Keeping you both in my heart
      I remain faithfully,
      Your friend

Yes, Sirisena is the most uneducated, ignorant, uncultured and indecent bumpkin ever to rule Sri Lanka. The fact that such a person can become the President and get on the stage and indulge in hate speech ridiculing homosexual citizens of this country to his own and his most senior political allies’ unconcealed merriment shows how low our political culture has sunk. As the writer points out, by laughing like jackasses, these primitive men seem to imply people are gay because they choose to be so. Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the subject knows that scientists are increasingly believing that a person’s sexual orientation is determined largely by genetic and hormonal factors. That is why in any population roughly 10 % has been found to be LGBTQ+. The people who were laughing at the meeting were either hypocritical or ignorant: either they know someone in their family circle who is gay, or they’re likely to see one born in the future.

It is well known that Buddhist monks who are ruining this country have been practicing homo sexuality with the Samaneras and Abiththyas(child helpers). Even the catholic priests practice it. Sirisena should be aware that Mahinda Rajapaksa was practicing homosexuality at the time when he was a buddy of Anura Bandaranayake in the early 70s. Then his brother Gotabhaya who was in the Ananada College hostel was one of the girl partners of senior hostellers. So the Rajapaksa are hetero- sexual. May be Sirisena is also heterosexual. He has no right to laugh at homosexuals in public. What a sensible article this author has written.

    • 5

Yes, the Mahinda-Anura liaison was well known. SWRD and Dahanayake were also known to be closet gays. In his school days Gotler was known as “Cabbage” and “Mariakade Taxi” among the hostellers. Appa Sira is known in his close circles as an “amphibian.” He goes both on land and water as the circumstances dictate … … sort of … … any port in a storm.

On one hand the writer assumes that calling someone a homosexual is an unpardonable insult. On the other he himself labours to tell us that it is just a biological orientation nothing to be ashamed of. A contradictory situation. Calling Sampanthan a Muslim is not an insult, just an error of judgement. But if Sampanthan takes it as a great insult what he is indicating that being a Muslim is a shameful thing. Similarly if Ranil Wickramasinghe takes calling him a homosexual as an insult he considers being homosexual is shameful.
Having read the full article I am left with the question being homosexual is something to be ashamed of or not.

“Calling Sampanthan a Muslim is not an insult, just an error of judgement.”

If it is only an error of judgement its fine. Knowing you, readers should always question your intentions.

“Having read the full article I am left with the question being homosexual is something to be ashamed of or not.”

      Definitely not.
However you should be ashamed of being a member and an ardent supporter of a noisy minority of Sinhala/Buddhist fascists who wishes to transform this island into a ghetto of mutant homeland.

Given that comparatively speaking Tamil Nadu is economically prospering second only to Maharashtra, why don’t you consider relocating to your ancestral homeland Tamil Nadu?
With your racist trait you will do well in his Naam Tamilar Katchi (Party of We Tamil). You will have far bigger canvas to draw.

Poor kids no more stories on butterflies from grandpa the great story teller.

Sirisena has proved beyond doubt that he is stupid, uncultured & above all, a corrupt time server with the only one objective in mind, that is to stay in power as along as possible. To achieve his objective, he is willing to cut a deal even with the grim reaper if necessary. Maybe he wants to sensationalise or ‘tough talk’ with the language that appeals to his audience & changes his rhetoric, even if it contradicts, probably to compensate for his lack of charisma. However, to a distant observer or rational thinker, it is obvious that Sirisena’s traits are due to his lack of education.

Many with humble beginnings have attained great heights with an education, & some, even without a higher education, are respected due to their family background & upbringing (not necessarily material wealth). In Sirisena’s case, having neither, is quite at home with the yobs he associates & clearly, wants to be the top banana among the yobs. Do we need such a yob, surrounded by more yobs, running the country?
