The Pied Piper From Polonnaruwa

By Malinda Seneviratnte

Malinda Seneviratne

Everyone knows the story of the Pied Piper. The one who came to the town of Hamlin, that is. He came to get rid of the rats and he did so by luring them out of every rathole in that unhappy town. They followed his tunes to a river and as he stepped onto a boat they went on to drown themselves. The villagers refused to pay him what was promised. He duly played his pipe again. This time it was the children that followed. They were never heard of again.

It’s an analogy that’s been used often. It is applicable to Sri Lanka’s current political moment too. Maithripala Sirisena contested the Presidential Election as the Reform Candidate. He would clean things up, we were told. He would reestablish law and order. He would amend the constitution to re-empower the citizen by way of scripting in transparency and accountability into process and institution. He would take steps to make representation more meaningful. He was given the power to do so and the arithmetic and political temper of the moment together made for a lot of optimism.

Perhaps one can blame the rank and file of the SLFP as well as its Parliamentary Group and Central Committee for being naive, servile or even downright stupid for inviting the newly elected President-Without-A-Party to return to his political thimbirigeya and assume leadership. Regardless of all this, the onus was on the benefactor, Maithripala Sirisena, not to abuse position and power thus entrusted on him, especially since he pledged decency, maithree (compassion) and all things wholesome.

SRI LANKA-ELECTION-OPPOSITIONWhat was wholesome, though, about a leader of a political party excusing himself from what was to be a tough campaign in a key election? What was wholesome in the same man, after pledging to be neutral, clearly supporting ‘the other party’? What was wholesome in writing a stinker to the man who, for better or worse, was leading the campaign of his party? What was wholesome in locking up his own party’s Central Committee? What was wholesome in removing the Secretaries of his party and the coalition of which his party was the key constituent just three days before the election and getting an injunction to prevent the deposed from ‘hindering operations’ to boot?

It can be argued that had Mahinda Rajapaksa kept out of things and ‘not in effect threatened to split the SLFP and therefore forced Sirisena to give him nominations’, Sirisena could have led the SLFP-led UPFA to victory over the UNP. What’s to say, on the other hand, that Sirisena wouldn’t have let the party that vilified him after what turned out to be a temporary defection rot?

All that’s conjecture. What’s ‘fact’ is that all the SLFPers contesting under the betel leaf who were clearly supporting Sirisena (over Rajapaksa) were booted out by the voters, barring Duminda Dissanayake who came a distant fourth in Anuradhapura. Fact 2: Sirisena moves to take the SLFP out of the UPFA. Fact 3: Sirisena appoints some of the above ‘losers’ to a committee to hammer out an agreement with the UNP. Fact 4: Sirisena gets ‘his’ Secretary of the UPFA to hoof out suspected Mahinda loyalists from the UPFA’s Executive Committee. Fact 5; He’s made sure the above ‘losers’ still make it to Parliament through the UPFA’s ‘National List’. That’s wholesome?

Perhaps Maithripala Sirisena loves the country more than his party. If that’s the case, AND if ‘the end does not justify the means’ is nothing more than a rhetorical tool, then all of the above could be tossed into a bin called ‘Necessary Inconveniences’. ‘Necessary’ because a UNP-SLFP combine is a ‘must’ to see Constitutional Amendments through. But does he really love anything more than himself and his continuing political relevance?

Sirisena played a watch-and-wait game for the most part until he moved to dissolve Parliament. He did not assert himself to get the UNP and the SLFP to see through the 19th and 20th Amendments. The 19th was passed and although the passed version was certainly far superior to the version submitted by the UNP (replacing an all powerful executive presidency with an equally powerful premiership, clearly envisaging victory in a general election a few months later) it contained several flaws. He allowed the UNP to drag its feet over the 20th and when the Bond Scam hit the political ceiling fan and showered the Government with stinky stuff, he gave them the ‘out’ of dissolution. Yes, he also removed and appointed CJs using executive powers.

Very little of all that can be called ‘for the larger good of the nation’. What is clearly apparent is that Sirisena is giving the finger to democracy. He’s putting his tongue out at everyone who voted for the UPFA. He is basically saying ‘gotcha suckers!’ That’s ‘neat’ if you supported the UNP or if you are rabidly anti-Mahinda, but let’s not forget that the man who is doing it all is still the most powerful individual in the country AND the one man the majority counted on to ‘do things the right way’. You can laugh at people’s choices and call them stupid, but that’s still some 4 million plus voters Maithtipala is lifting your sarong to.

The Pied Piper from Polonnaruwa is drowning some rats, the people of Elephant Pass (Alimankada) might say (not THAT ‘Alimankada’ of course) and have a good laugh over it. He has the pipes though. He can drown other species too. There won’t be many people laughing then, however.

You have the gall to lecture us about democracy when you were the sycophantic megaphone for a man who made a mockery of the very word?? The mental gymnastics of you Mahinda supporters never fail to astonish me.

Voters from villages knows everything much better than urban pundits. What you can see today and what you can write today is due to freedom and democracy achieved by other people for you.

Malinda, you are taking Yahapalanaya damn too seriously. Be aware that Death Sqad has yet not been disbanded and it is in the control of Maithripala. And after penetrating you with the piper’s pipe, and if your fate is decided in one of the White Vans, none with an atom of integrity will shed any tears for you.

Contrary to what you say, all what Maithripala has done during the last 8 months were definitely ‘for the larger good of the nation’, including the sacking of the paraya Cheap Justice and appointing the new Chief Justice.

Sri Lanka is rejoicing. You can go to hell you shameless sob.

This [Edited out], Linda marched to the Corrupt tune of MR for the last ten years without any hesitation. Most of the other rats that followed him are fast getting isolated and left out. Once the lot who supports MS leaves the UPFA and join the UNP to form a National govt. the numbers in the UPFA will dwindle to insignificant levels. This is exactly what the Piper MR did when he was in power, after meeting RW to form a National govt and lured forty odd out of the UNP to wreck the UNP the following day. Today retribution has come to visit MR. The irony that this Linda is still playing the fiddle of MR thinking that he can give life to it. Little he realizes that it is dead as a dodo. Linda go jump in the Beira with the laptop tied around your neck.

MaRa MaRa Chatu MaRa and His Cronies are being drowned by the Pied Piper from Polonnaruwa.

Let us all sing the Jaya Mangala Gatha in the Original Pali on the defeat of MaRa, Mara and his cronies.

Jaya Mangala Gatha-Verses of Auspicious Victory (rare Pali version)-Buddhist Chants.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OH9kdeLEX4

Based on the Book of Protection (Paritta Sutta) from the Pali canon, the Jaya Mangala Gatha is sung here in a rare recording by the Mahabodhi Society of India in original Pali. The Jaya Mangala Gatha is a chant recommended by the Buddha to destroy negativity and to generate auspiciousness. It proclaims the 8 major victories of the Buddha which are:

    1) Victory over Mara ( MaRa)
    2) Victory over the demon Alavaka (Wimal)
    3) Victory over the wild elephant Nalagiri (Udu Gamanpila)
    4) Victory over serial killer Angulimala (Gotabaya)
    5) Victory over the evil intentions of Cinca who sought to defame (Pavitra) 6) Victory over the haughty brahmin Saccaka (Vasudeva)
    7) Victory over the serpent king Nandopananda (Susil)
    8) Victory over the false views of Brahma Baka (Yapa)

    English translation:

    Creating thousand hands, with weapons
armed was Mara seated on the
    trumpeting, ferocious elephant Girimekhala.
Him, together with his army, did the
Lord of Sages subdue by means of generosity and other virtues.
By its grace may joyous victory be thine.

More violent than Mara were the
    indocile, obstinate demon Alavaka, who
battled with the Buddha throughout the
    whole night.
Him, did the Lord of Sages
subdue by means of His patience and
    self-control.
By its grace may joyous victory be thine.

Hail to Malinda, the unquestioned king of grovellers! Poor chap doesn’t understand (or is too churlish to recognise) that Maithripala played the strategic game of his life, always abiding by what was legal and within his discretion to do, AND always having the interest of the nation and its people at the forefront.

There was once a burly ignoramus sporting a kurakkan saathakaya and squeezing his golden talisman, who also played by the law-book, except for the trivial matter that he wrote it himself and for the exclusive benefit of himself, his family and the bunch of bandits who cringed before him.

That certain gentleman recently earned the unprecedented priviledge of being booted out by the electorate for the second time in 7 months, proving that the people of this fair isle have grown up a bit and are mature enough to distinguish between right from wrong, and cannot any longer be taken for a ride by thieving politikkas and gutter journos such as this whippersnapper who goes around singing hosannas to the ousted king!

Some drastic measures are necessary to meet drastic situations. It is as simple as that. When ‘outsiders’ had usurped the SLFP exercising dictatorial powers of its former President, the urgent need of the hour was to cleanse the old party and if that need had to be met by a drastic measure, then that is justified!
There is a limit to ‘willingness’ to accommodate!

    Malinda,

The sacking of the Central Committee and of the general secretaries was as a result of these a-s lickers nominating the drug dealers, ethanol dealers and the corrupt politicians being allowed to contest at the dictum of Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Malinda does not see it that way and probably he is the only one in the entire population of Sri Lanka’s population who sees it his way.

President did the utmost to not split the SLFP. He was very clear from the beginning that MR will not be the Prime Minister. MR on the other hand wanted to contest not to save Sri Lanka but to save himself and his family.

Stop writing rubbish Malinda. The people do not buy it anymore.

This is a very unfair assessment of President Sirisena.

Malinda states `Perhaps one can blame the rank and file of the SLFP as well as its Parliamentary Group and Central Committee for being naive, servile or even downright stupid for inviting the newly elected President-Without-A-Party to return to his political thimbirigeya and assume leadership’ Regardless of all this, the onus was on the benefactor, Maithripala Sirisena, not to abuse position and power thus entrusted on him’

SLFP rank & file’s hidden agenda when inviting newly elected President Sirisena to be their party leader was to use President Sirisena to save their own party and the save politicians who robbed the country and misused their power.

In Malinga’s own words SLFPers tried to get President Sirisena to `GIVE THE FINGER TO DEMOCRACY’ and kick the ambitions of those who voted for him.

President Sirisena tried his best to manage a very difficult situation to be elected as President of a coalition opposed to the SLFP rule and also be the leader of the SLFP.

THE BENEFACTOR IN THIS SITUATION WAS NOT PRESIDENT SIRISENA BUT THE CORRUPT LEADERS OF THE SLFP/UPFA. President Sirisena had no benefit as he is already the President and has publicly stated that he wont be contesting again.

Thus the onus was on SLFP/UPFA leaders not to challenge the power entrusted to MS. However Having handed over the leadership, these corrupt lot from the UPFA/SLFP for the past six months continuously tried to destabilize the SLFP and challenge his authority (specially with bring back Mahinda campaigns). They used SLFP vote base as a tool to achieve this objective. Their pledges were highly communal. Significantly these were diametrically opposite to the party leader MS’s policies and the aspirations of people who voted President Sirisena to power.

Any person with an iota of intelligence and commonsense should have known that any SLFP leader with such powers when contested could and would use them at his/her discretion to achieve the leaders publicly stated objective. In this background President had used whatever means available to achieve this objective.

If he had not used these powers he would probably go down in history as a lame duck President.

Sirisena, was NOT invited by the rank and file membership OR by the CC to assume leadership of the Party. It was the default position on becoming President. The man who back stabbed the then incumbent also became the party leader.

He showed his democratic credentials by sacking the elected CC and appointing his back scratchers to take control of the party apparatus, but he is still reduced to appointing unpopular discards at the recent election on his ‘national list’ to retain a semblance of normality. A man who worked against the SLFP/UPFA has taken control alongside the other traitor CBK.

        0

        Ram,

I was only quoting Malinga that MS was invited by the SLFP to lead the party. However MS openly stated that MR REQUESTED him to accept the leadership of SLFP and MR has not denied it to date. Also there were adequate disciplinary procedure that could be initiated at that stage to expel MS from the SLFP if necessary.

My point was that MS was not the benefactor and had noting to gain by becoming the SLFP/UPFA leader as he was already the President of the country.

People of Sri Lanka will vouch for his democratic credentials during his period as the President of SL, against the Previous Presidents MR, CBK, RP and JRJ.

If MR and the Central Committee handed over leadership of SLFP to a `traitor’ they should take responsibility for it.

        • 0
          0

” My point was that MS was not the benefactor …. “

He worked against the SLFP/UFPA along with CBK. MS benefited by denying his opponent the ability to form a government, even though the latter came within a whisker of doing so. His control of the party which he achieved with APPOINTEES also gave him the ability to again APPOINT sycophants, DISCARDED by the electorate, to the National list which gave the UNP and affiliates the numbers to form the government. That alone assured him a comfortable living, without rancour, for the next 5 years.

” If that’s the case, AND if ‘the end does not justify the means’ is nothing more than a rhetorical tool,”

I think, Malinda, that ‘ends justifying the means’ is very popular in Sri Lanka and has always been. Exceptions to the rule. We are not a colony any more, Malinda. It all makes sense.

Malinda asks: “What was wholesome, about excusing himself? What was wholesome, in supporting ‘the other party’? What was wholesome in writing a stinker to the man? What was wholesome in locking up Central Committee? What was wholesome in removing the Secretaries?”

Come on Malinda! You, from the bottom of your heart, were wishing that Mahinda would somehow scrape through with the majority of seats in the parliament. It’s time to ask the question, “what happened?”.

Sirisena was elected in January for a purpose. In case you are still blind to that reason, it was to clean up politics in Sri Lanka. A near impossible task, but one that is absolutely needed for the sake of the future generationa.

If there is one thing Sirisena has to be, that is to be tough. Even to take a start to the process of achieving that near impossible task Sirisena has to be tough – starting with his own party. Mind you, his own party, taken over by an imposter after Prabhakaran won the 2005 election for him, and the armed forces won the war for him.

So,here are the answers to your questions:

What was wholesome, about excusing himself (from supporting the imposter)? Toughness.

What was wholesome, after pledging to be neutral, supporting ‘the other party’(against the imposter)? Toughness.

What was wholesome in writing a stinker to the imposter leading the campaign of his party? Toughness.

What was wholesome in locking up Central Committee (trying to bring back the imposter)? What was wholesome in removing the Secretaries (trying to bring back the imposter)? Toughness.

And the question you should have asked:

What was wholesome in bowing to existing party rules and letting a corrupt loser to be the prime-ministerial candidate? And the answer is, yes you guessed it this time, Toughness. And, I cannot recall a time in Sri Lanka’s history when that type of toughness was on display.

The real test of Sirisena will be whether he will continue to be tough, and as tough as this, when he has to fight corruption within the new government, yes including the UNP.

I hope that you will back Sirisena when that time comes.

    Malinda

You are right when you say

“Perhaps one can blame the rank and file of the SLFP as well as its Parliamentary Group and Central Committee for being naive, servile or even downright stupid for inviting the newly elected President-Without-A-Party to return to his political thimbirigeya and assume leadership.”

Mahinda and his group are now paying the price for giving Brutus Maithri the leadership of SLFP and UPFA.

This yahapalanaya man did everything to defeat the UPFA and now he has no shame in stuffing the UPFA national list with his defeated supporters, the right to which was earned thanks to the support of true UPFA followers. The very fact that all the supporters of Brutus Maithri except for one were defeated is clear indication that people who voted for UPFA had clearly said a “no” to Brutus Maithri and his supporters. And this scheming woman Chandrika is now back in SLFP having campaigned against it supporting SLFP rivals like Arjuna Ranatunga. No shame here either.

Thank God I am living in a country where immoral and shamelessly unethical politicians like Brutus Maithri would have been hounded out by the media. Only days ago they managed to chase away a woman Speaker here for unethical conduct because she used just a few thousand dollars of public money to pay for travelling which was seen as a personal trip not related to official business. If a thing like the central bank bond scam had happened in this countty, the media here would have seen the jailing of Mahendran and a permanent end to the political career of Ranil.

Malinda there is no morality or ethics in Sri Lankan politics. In Sri Lanka you now have a very dangerous man as the executive President of the country. Brutus Maithri is a smiling assassin. Anyone who reads characters of men from their photo images will tell you that this guy is a wrong’un. This man is a worse dictator than JR and Premadasa combined.

Very soon you will find that Ranil reigning supreme and consign Brutus Maithri to the dust bin where he really belongs to. Brutus Maithri will then be like the wife who left her husband to sleep with the King.

I applaud the resolve and moral courage of the likes of Wimal Weerawansa(though I hate his communal politics), Udaya Gamanpilla, comrade Vasu and comrade Dinish who are refusing to bow down to Brutus Maithri.

    Malinda

Good analogy, ironically though, this had to happened as what happened was when Rome was on fire your man was playing fiddle, which, if not for Piper, SL would have been a banana he would have sent a white van to you also, only if you were dare to write some truth about what he was up to then.

What Piper did eloquently was to turn the 10 to 15 voters from SLFP that would not go simply by blue or green color but pause and see the quality of candidacy as well. In that fine analysis, piper outweighs the fiddler- he didn’t have white vans organizing skills, nor grease devils, moreover, didn’t have a brother of Gota’s caliber or Basil. Has he has not got three sons as brut as MR has. Under the circumstance, he has to play his strong, which pipes. In all this, I thought he was a clear winner. He didn’t want a sweeping lead in the house by UNP on the other hand MR going around saying people wants him to come back to politics. Now, it is all sorted, will see if he will sort other long standing matters.

Desperate days! Here’s one rat that didn’t drown but is still clutching at straws in a desperate effort to save itself.

Maithri is not the one who “is giving the finger to democracy”, rather, he is successfully reviving what little democracy remains after Mahinda’s era of impunity, nepotism, corruption and lawlessness gave democracy the “finger” and “raised his sarong to” everyone except those who benefited from his largesse.

And who was it that included a bunch of “losers” on his national list?

The fact is that Maithri was far too smart for the complacent ex-ruler and skilfully dismantled his ‘operation’ to save the country from disaster.

There’s more bullshit in this post than is worth the effort to deconstruct, but what is clear is that Malinda is still trying to revive his fallen idol – thankfully to no avail.

Pied Piper of Pollonnaruwa… How ironic…

PPP.s entourage has a few interesting characters , according to the EconomyNext.

It has a Venerable Monk carrying the UNP flag, Rajitha and his mongrel pup.

Two MPs who shared one wife.

A Woman MP who had a crush on two MPs .

One MP who got a murder charge against him.

And more seriously a male MP who alleged that a party Senior made sexual advances on him , but doesn’t want to name him.

EconomyNext doesn’t want to either, as it doesn’t want a LKR 500 Million or even more now , claim for damaging the reputation.

BASL might even do it no Win no Fee basis..

    Good one MS!
Prez. Sirisena is a confused man who needs political education and is perhaps learning on the job..

He should NOT have given Mahinda Jarapassa nominations.

Sirisena should have led from the front and told the SLFP masses the TRUTH that the SLFP is deeply divided, full of corrupt thugs who are Mahinda Jarapassa’s cronies and refsued nominations to the corrupt thugs in the SLFP, Instead they are now all back in the Diyawenna Parliament!

To add insult to injury Sirisena has brought back the foul mouthed Dilam Perera who abused the first woman Chief Justice in filth and the clown S.B. Dissanaiyake and others who lost at the elections via the national list. Does be not know that the national list is for EDUCATED and YOUNG people to contribute to the country and become leaders?!
    To

And so, the Sinhala Moda masses remain stupid because the political leaders like President Sirisena teach them stupidity!
And Jarapassa is back spreading pollution in the Diyawenna Parliament of corrupt morons!

Voila the new political culture in the Miracle of Modayas!

Why the president changed the secretary position while nominations were called ? There, he could sack or avoid giving nominations to wrong ones, had he done so ? Hindsight we all may say it like that, but to that time, Prez had been facing a situation being caught by devil.. that is for sure.

Shame on Sirisena to give the corrupt crook Thilanga Sumathipala a national list spot. Just like he gave Jarapassa nominations, he keep tangoing with the filth in the SLFP!
