The Return Of Statue Politics

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“We are members of the Rajapaksa Nikaya. (We) are robed in the Rajapaksa Nikya, members of the Rajapaksa caste.” ~ Ampitiye Sumanaratana

“He who has control over his hands, feet, and tongue, who is fully controlled, delights in inward development, is absorbed in meditation, keeps to himself and is contented – him do people call a monk.” ~ The Buddha (Dhamma Pada – Bhikkuvagga)

On the night of 15 May 2005, a 12-feet tall Buddha statue was set up near the public market in Trincomalee. It was the work of a group of monks, the North-East Sinhala Organisation, and the Trincomalee Three Wheeler Drivers’ Association.

The installation was illegal since the land was a public property and no permission had been obtained. Perhaps the forces behind this provocative act hoped the LTTE would intervene and destroy the statue, leading to an outbreak of civil violence in Trincomalee – the ideal background for the emergence of a new hero to save rata, jatiya, agama. Fortunately, the LTTE ignored the issue. It had other fish to fry, starting with building its military strength and murdering dissenting Tamils (the assassination of Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar less than 3 months later was a key marker in this process of elimination of Tamil dissent).

So bloodshed was avoided. Instead, Tamil civil organisations organised a peaceful Hartal. The police, on instructions of the AG’s Department, did the right thing by going to courts. The Magistrate ordered the removal of the particular Buddha statues and all other illegal religious structures in town.

The order was never implemented. Politics triumphed over the rule of law. The JHU’s monk-parliamentarian cohort, led by Aturaliye Ratana, demonstrated against the order in parliament. The monks then went on procession to Fort and held a Satyagraha. The Trincomalee police erected a protective fence around the illegal statue and provided it with round-the-clock armed security. According to an intelligence report obtained by the Ministry of Defence, Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara, who headed the Eastern Command, addressed a group of three-wheeler drivers involved in the statue project and “assured them he would ensure the statue would not be removed” (The Sunday Times19.6.2005 quoted in UTHR).

The continued existence of the Buddha statue was thus ensured. The next step was its legal normalisation. The chief incumbent of the China Bay Maha Bodhi Vihara filed a fundamental rights petition against the then Attorney General, stating that the Magistrate Court order regarding the removal of the Buddha statue was made “on the advice of the AG, Mr Kamalasabesan, who is a Hindu and Tamil, and…a former resident of Trincomalee” (ibid). Instead of dismissing the racist petition, the then chief justice Sarath Silva reportedly arm-twisted the AG into dropping the Buddha statue case, telling him the alternative would be a messy and a very personal court case.

The 2004 Trincomalee statue incident was not an isolated one but part of a broader plan to ignite ethno-religious tensions in the multi-ethnic, multi-religious Eastern Province. In April 2005, a Buddha statue was illegally and secretly set up near the Pottuvil public market. That led to a brief outburst of violence. In early May 2005, the then JVP Trincomalee parliamentarian Jayantha Weerasekara made an unsuccessful attempt to build houses for Sinhalese in the Mc Heyzer Stadium.

2005 was a liminal year. The presidency of Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was drawing to a close on a note not of triumph but of disillusionment and dejection. She had fought and won every election on two main planks – delivering peace and ensuring a better socio-economic life for ordinary Lankans. She had failed to deliver on both counts. As 2005 dawned, there was intense speculation about who would succeed her as the leader and candidate of the governing coalition. The two main contenders were Anura Bandaranaike and Mahinda Rajapaksa, the latter positioning himself as the new leader of ‘nationalist’ forces, a code-word for Sinhala-Buddhist in the Lankan lexicon.

From Past to Present

In 2003, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had two aims: dislodge Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and enable her party to recapture governmental power. She regarded the JVP as an ally in this project. Months of informal cooperation between the President’s PA (Peoples’ Alliance) and the JVP led to a formal pact in January 2024. The PA was reborn as the UPFA (United Peoples Freedom Alliance). This unprecedented deal marked an inflexion point in the JVP’s long journey from insurgent organisation in 1965 to party of governance in 2024.

(A necessary digression: President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga appointed the Vijaya Kumaratunga Commission in Feb 1994 to determine who killed Vijaya. The Commission’s report, completed in 1996, cleared the JVP of this heinous crime. The report did admit that hard-core JVPer Lionel Ranasinghe did the actual killing, but concluded – with no evidence – that he did so on the orders of the UNP, Ranasinghe Premadasa and Ranjan Wijeratne. When Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga began accusing the JVP of killing Vijaya in 2023/2024, the JVP quoted the findings of her own commission at her).

Outside of the formal agreement, the JVP also had an informal condition – that the premiership of a future UPFA administration to be given to Lakshman Kadirgamar. The President agreed, then gave into Mahinda Rajapaksa’s threats of mob-thuggery and appointed him the premier. Had the JVP’s condition been fulfilled, Sri Lanka’s subsequent trajectory might have taken a less destructive and self-destructive direction.

By mid-2005, both the JHU and the JVP had aligned themselves with Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidential bid. This was the context in which the Trincomalee Buddha statue incident took place. The JHU openly backed the installation of the statue and opposed its removal. The JVP did so indirectly via the North-East Sinhala Organisation which it reportedly controlled.

In June 2005, the JVP left the government, depriving the President of her majority. Her plan to postpone the presidential election by a year (based on the argument that she held the 1999 election one year ahead and had a second swearing-in in 2001) failed when her handpicked chief justice Sarath Silva double-crossed her. He decreed that election should be held before December 2005 (in response to a petition by JHU monk-parliamentarian Omalpe Sobhita). By this time, CJ Silva too had become allied with Mahinda Rajapaksa. In 28 September 2005, this former Chandrika-protégé removed the final barrier to a Mahinda presidency by imposing a ban on a court-mandated police investigation into the Helping Hambantota scandal until 17 January 2006. When that day came, Mahinda Rajapaksa was already president.

In 2004, Mahinda Rajapaksa correctly understood that premiership was a necessary precondition for presidency. In 2025, Namal Rajapaksa understands that dominating the oppositional space (informally) would be of immense utility in his own march to presidency. The main purpose of the Nugegoda rally was to establish young Namal’s position as the ‘next president’. At the rally, the announcer, referring to a piece of paper, introduced the eldest Mahinda scion as “the future leader of the country who sees tomorrow and wins the world.”

In order to effectively dominate the oppositional space, Namal Rajapaksa needs to remake it as an openly Sinhala-Buddhist supremacist one, a terrain which would enable him to overtake Sajith Premadasa and position himself as the alternative to Anura Kumara Dissanayake. This is the context in which the 2025 Trincomalee Buddha statue drama took place. According to media reports, there was a dhamma school in that place until it was destroyed by the 2004 tsunami. For the next 21 years, no one thought of reconstructing it, possibly the relevant portion of the land fell within the 100meter buffer zone. Instead, the temple which owned the land leased it to a private individual to start a café. Then, suddenly, this month, the reconstruction of the dhamma school became a matter of life and death. And a Buddha statue installed under cover of darkness. The pre-planned nature of the incident became obvious from the rapidity with which the likes of Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara and Ampitiye Sumanaratana arrived on the scene. Again as per plan, the monks representing the temple arrived in Colombo to meet Namal Rajapaksa and seek his help.

Young Namal is not inexperienced in statue politics. For instance, in 2010, “Namal Rajapaksa arrived on a sudden visit to Jaffna…with a statue of Sangamitta….to be enshrined in the newly built Buddhist temple in Maathakal” (according to a post on his official website). Rajapaksa politics is irredeemably intertwined with Sinhala-Buddhist supremacism. Despite attempts at presenting a modern liberal front, Namal Rajapaksa is very much a chip off the old Mahinda-Gotabaya block. He might occasionally wear a different mask, but his path and his destination would be no different from theirs.

The Rajapaksa Nikaya

Ampitiye Sumanaratana, for once, spoke the truth and nothing but the truth when he called himself a member of the Rajapaksa Nikaya.

During the second presidential term of Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sinhala-Buddhism became further degraded into Rajapaksa Buddhism. The robed practitioners of Rajapaksa Buddhism, like Ampitiye Sumanaratana and Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara, consist of the Rajapaksa Nikaya. These rabble-rousing monks endeavour to create suitable enemies imperilling rata, jatiya, agama, in accordance with need and opportunity. They paint lurid word-pictures of national danger, to explain and justify the Rajapaksa power project of the moment. In return, they’d get a slice of political and economic power, a chance to stand above the law, to beat opponents down.

In his seminal work History of Buddhism in Ceylon, Walpola Rahula thero points out that the nexus between religion and power in Sri Lanka was a very ancient one. “Sasana constituted a fully-fledged state department,” and the Sangha “used their influence over the masses to support the king who in return looked after their interests… The king found a powerful means of propaganda in the Sangha who had close contact with the people, and had great influence over them. Hence we find kings, who had committed heinous crimes, honouring the Sangha and sending them around the country in order to influence the people in their favour…”

There is no space or justification in the Buddha’s teachings for any political involvement by monks. Yet, ancient Lankan history is replete with examples of monks becoming involved in dynastic politics. For instance, in the second century BCE, some monks made an attempt to deprive King Saddha-Tissa’s older son Lajja-Tissa of kingship by placing the younger son Thullathana on the throne. In the first century CE, another group of monks conspired to kill King Kanirajanu-Tissa within the uposatha house. The plan failed and the king ordered about 60 monks to be thrown down Cetiya-pabba (Mihintale).

That this quid pro quo relationship between political power and religion was harmful to Buddhism was obvious. With Independence, there was a chance to end this toxic connection forever. Prime Minister DS Senanayake consistently turned down requests by monks to turn Buddhism into state religion, stating that he didn’t want Buddhism to be reduced to a ‘state department’ (Religion and Politics in Sri Lanka – Urmila Phadnis). Since the LSSP and the CP too were committed to secular politics, post-Independence, there was a real chance for both religion and politics to take separate paths in accordance with their different priorities and concerns. SWRD Bandaranaike put an end to it in 1956.

Political monks played a critical role in the election of Gotabaya Rajapaksa as president. His disastrous rule created a public backlash against the politicisation of Buddhism. Post-Aragalaya, most political monks are adrift, a force in search of a space to play their self-allocated role as ‘guardian deities’ of the nation. Their obvious choice is Namal Rajapaksa. To regain lost glory, they and he must rise together. The 2025 Trincomalee Buddha statue incident and the 2025 Nugegoda meeting are steps in their joint journey upwards. How far and how fast they travel depend not just on them but also on the government and the main opposition.

The traditional ethos of the left was to “stand by those in the margins: the tired, the poor, the hungry, those yearning to breathe free,” wrote philosopher Susan Neiman (New York Review of Books – December 2025). The NPP/JVP came into power promising relief to those Lankans beaten down by the economic crisis and its aftermath. One year on, that promised relief is in extremely short supply. History tells us that when the left fails to provide sufficient respite to ‘the tired, the poor, the hungry’, they can be receptive to the deadly appeals of the populist right. And in Sri Lanka, the populist right uses the monks of the Rajapaksa Nikaya as flame-throwers; and Buddha statues are their weapons of choice.

“And in Sri Lanka, the populist right uses the monks of the Rajapaksa Nikaya as flame-throwers; and Buddha statues are their weapons of choice.”
In Sri Lanka, populist right and populist Left used Buddhism or Buddhist state used since 1948. On the left side SWRD used Sinhala only and Mrs SWRD used Buddhism. Even a Buddhist Monk killed SWRD. On the right side JRJ and Ranil, Premadasa used it. Latest Rajapaksa, even Left Vasudeva used Buddhism. Now, the challenge is with AKD/NPP. Whether So far, AKD/NPP did not touch this fake Buddhism. So far, Buddhism was used against the country, against the people and the image of Sri Lankan Buddhism had blood on its hand. This is the challenge for AKD/NPP?

The involvement of vermin such as Bengamuwe Nalaka and Gnanasara in the Statue affair is a good indication that the Pohottuwa is behind it. The incompetent performance of the government was no small help to them.

      ” ………………….. Pohottuwa is behindit”

Okay who is funding the war is it the Sinhala/Buddhist diaspora?
Why Sri Lankan media is not campaigning against such foreign funding?

“The incompetent performance of the government was no small help to them.”

Are you blaming nimal for his support to the incompetent government?
Are the police in uniform allowed to conduct what is obviously an political act of carrying the Buddha statue to its disputed place of resting?

One day the police carried Mahinda/Gota b**s and the next day they carried …. something else for Bikku.
      Does it matter?

For Lanka ……… each have different yardsticks to measure competence. ……. In my book, if a government doesn’t bankrupt the country, doesn’t inject patients with contaminated water …… and the self-claimed great Buddhist-scholar president doesn’t defeat the no-confidence motion brought against the culprit ……. if the president doesn’t scam public-funds to take the spouse and crooks on joy rides around the globe ……. if the president who was never voted-in by the people doesn’t show Banana-Republic dictator behaviour and imports for himself 2 armour plated Mercs while the children are starving …….. the government has shown rare as hens teeth competence in living memory!

For another country people may use different yardsticks …….. horses for courses.

While Ranil protects, supports Namal and uses all his cunning and blessings to anoint Namal as the president ……… It’s a bit rich for unapologetic Ranil supporters to show up here and blame AKD and the government for Namal’s ascendency! :))))

Even though elite Lankans express their opinions here daily ……… in highly-educated perfect king’s English they have taken pains to master – to display/showcase their great learning in the mistaken belief that language denotes learning/education: not thinking – …….. it’d be a miracle to find a single Lankan among the intelligentsia who can have principles and stick by them.

That’s why I’ve always taken the forum as the best joke in town ……. from day one!

Can anyone among ye jokers blame me?

Are you mad or am I mad?

        That is the question! :))))

          Hello Nimal,
I have seen, first hand, the incompetence of the British Government’s IT Projects. I have also seen the demise of an Intelligent, Articulate Politician that should have been Prime Minister; being replaced by his “Numpty” brother. I suspect that this was because of his Pro Palestinian sentiments. The Israeli lobby inside the UK is very powerful. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-21953645
So it doesn’t matter how Intelligent or Honest the Politicians are, you will always find that the forces behind them will impose their will on any that stray too far. I don’t know enough about the Sri Lankans (or others) behind the attempts to dismantle the NPP Government, but I am sure that the Author Tisaranee is correct in her analysis.
          Best regards

I’ll keep it very simple. Can you name/point-out a single person in the forum who changed his/her mind?

In life, changing one’s mind is natural. Right?

Is not changing one’s mind, unnatural?

Irrespective of the state of reality/truth, if people go through their entire lives with the same mindset what does that tell you? :))))

Nimal, nothing (will) has changed . Just consider those events of last week.
Statue politics, underworld Monks, Ganasara’s threatening govt,
Nugegoda meeting, Ranil’s visit to South Indian temple, prince and forty thieves on stage discussing Low and Odor, gun violence, drugs ………
In this setting anything positive, needs appreciation.

              Hello Nimal,
One of our Mechanics Teachers helped us to change our minds about Medieval and Gothic Architecture. We all thought that Flying Buttresses and the Gothic Arches were decorative. After some vector analysis on the structures and practical Balsa Wood models we changed our minds. I looked at St Giles Cathedral (Edinburgh) and the Brig o’ Balgownie in a new light. Both were built in the 1300s.
As for mindsets, the Tory Prime Minister Harold McMillan reputedly said “Events, dear boy, events” referring to challenges on Policies etc. The same sentiment could easily be also applied to mindsets. The real world can change your mind, however many people’s ideas are so entrenched that for some it is impossible to change. Remember the Jesuit saying “Give me the child for the first seven years, and I’ll give you the man”. Or to paraphrase “Get em while they’re young”.
              Best regards

“……It’s a bit rich for unapologetic Ranil supporters to show up here and blame AKD……”

I find it quite entertaining that some strong RW supporters in the former have now become compassionate Namal supporters unconditionally, just to attack AKD 😂 Goes even to the extent quoting international reports to ‘prove’ Nugegoda rally was a ‘success’!! It is funny the same people who vehemently attacked the Rajapaksha regime not so long ago are now darlings of Namal. Probably following one of their leaders Harin? Shows how pathetically bankrupted these people are and their political maturity but then again there is a limit one can fathom, isn’t it?

People, when they reach a certain point in adulthood, they should have developed enough maturity to face reality: not play childish games day after day to create an alternate reality.

Native Vedda plays a different game ……. expecting the same results!!!

Where can you find better entertainment? :))))

Statue politics and Lanken Buddhist traditional politics are not limited to Rajapakshe and their mlechcha politics, but also to Anura K. Disanayaka, the man who came to promise against such traditions being followed by politicians seeking popularity rather than awakening the people with mere truths. Today, AKD and their men are either stuttering or unable to speak in front of the media.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jihwbVnNsiw

Although I disagree with Rajaakshe’s politics, this drama in Trincomalee was orchestrated by AKD-led organizations to deflect public scrutiny.
As of right now, Lallantha, a former rascal who is now a politician and a senior minister in the current government, is acknowledging that they raised their scale and are now unable to fulfill their commitments.

NPP government which is the best we had since independence from British has satisfy Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims , Burgers, Buddhist, Hindus, Christians and Muslims.
Depending on the situation they have to act tactfully to calm down the situation and prevent racist and religious uprising.
Their handling of situation is acceptable but can never be the best as you can’t satisfy so many opposing groups.
Tisaranee can agitate as a writer as she does need to get attention of extremists. But the government is larger than these writing as writer does not care about the responsibility of the government.

“NPP government which is the best we had since independence from British has satisfy Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims , Burgers, Buddhist, Hindus, Christians and Muslims.”

I wish I could ask you why you think so. What unique achievements have they claimed in the last 12 months, other than claiming credit for the previous government’s limited achievements?
I believe they did not respect the experience of previous senior ministers or premiers, but rather assumed they would be experts in every field, but their political ambitions proved futile. AKD does not know how to act as a president, particularly in his parliamentary speeches. He is not a KADALA seller, but he has been elected president for all. Basta.

This government’s leadership under AKD and Premier HA is analogous to Watukurulla’s (a tiny little bird) efforts to explode on its own simply by watching an elephant drop large amounts of droppings. The AKD and its ministers would be forced to collapse sooner than expected. Nothing is said to be a norm under their government right now, but big talks and “bad mouth-cyber forces” make every effort to keep the ball rolling for at least a few weeks.

First comes the illegally erected Buddha statue, which, after many protests by the local Tamils and Muslims, is not removed, even if the court orders it, but remains protected by the local Sinhalese authorities, police, and armed forces. Then an illegal Buddhist Vihara is built again, protected by the Sinhalese police, government officials and armed forces, despite the court orders. Then come the illegal Sinhalese settlements surrounding this illegal Buddhist place of worship, again protected by the Sinhalese state armed forces and police, and the Sinhalisation process of this once Tamil area is complete, and the original Tamil inhabitants are gradually chased away. Then comes the name change, the original Tamil place name is Sinhalised or a new Sinhalese place name given. Eg Amparai to Ampara, Kanatalai to Kantale, or Manal Aru to Weli Oya or Pattipalai Aru to Gal Oya. With the so-called handmaiden of Sinhalese Buddhism, the so-called Archaeological Department, concocting a new Mahavamsa fairy tale to justify the fake Sinhalese claim, like someone here does, that this Tamil area was once part of the ancient Sinhalese homeland.

      • 21
        33

This statue is illegal, like all recently erected Budda statues and viharas in the north and east on state and private Tamil land. Instead of removing this illegally erected Buddha statue deliberately erected to humiliate the local Tamils in their own lands and show them that they can do what they like even in their own lands, this government, like all previous governments, is pandering to Sinhalese Buddhist majoritarian sentiments and racism, as this is where their vote bank is. The JVP, from which the NPP largely comes from has a history of Sinhalese Buddhist racism. No one is against legally erected or built religious sites or statues. Will Hindus, Christians, or Muslims ever be allowed go around erecting illegal religious statues or buildings on state and private land in Sinhalese areas and get away with impunity, with the Sinhalese state protecting them, like these Sinhalese Buddhist racists and fascists, overtly and covertly backed by most Sinhalese politicians, elite, and the religious establishment, do in Tamil areas.

    • 22
      33

And the appeasement and satisfactory solution is always in favour of Sinhalese Buddhists, racists and extremists, erecting illegal Buddha statues and Buddhist structures, claiming ancient Tamil Hindu and Buddhist religious sites, monuments and ruins, for Sinhalese Buddhism, using fake history and the mouth piece of state sponsored Sinhalese Buddhist racism the so called Archaeological department, always at the expence of the local Tamil and Tamil Muslims in the North and east. This has been happening since the time of independence by all Sinhalese-led governments including the current one.

    • 20
      35

It is, first of all, an illegally erected statue, on state land, like the vast majority of the recently erected Buddha statues, and Buddhist religious sites in the north and east, that are remaining despite court orders to remove them. So what is there to appease or satisfy anyone? An illegally erected statue, a religious site on state or private land, deliberately erected to show majoritarian power, or create disharmony, should be removed and not allowed to remain, just to appease racists, who are using religion as a tool to deliberately humiliate, dispossess other people in their own land, and show them they have to power to do them whatever they want to and whenever they want to and get away with it, despite the law stating otherwise, as they have the backing of the Sinhalese state, the Sinhalese armed forces, police, all government and even private resources and funds, so they can even thumb their noses at the law and even many times the law was changed or twisted to grant decisions in their favour. This is why they go around with impunity everywhere in the Tamil areas to erect Buddha statues, Viharas and even claim other religious sites for Sinhalese Buddhism as the state backs them. It is not only in Trincomalee and Pottuvil but even in Vavuniya that they erected a huge illegal Buddah statue, which is still standing, right in the middle of town. Buddha and Buddhism are being used as tools of oppression and dispossession by these people and the Sinhalese state against the Tamils and even the Muslims.

    • 20
      38

They brazenly erect these Buddhist statues, religious sites, and claim other religious sites in Tamil areas, as they know they can get away with this. If something is illegal, remove it short and sweet and not play racist appeasement politics to deliberately remain, fester, create disharmony and be used as a tool of oppression and dispossession. Hindu Lord Buddha will be weeping as to what these racist Sinhalese Buddhists are doing in his name to his fellow Hindus and Trincomalee and to this ancient sacred Hindu city.

what do you expect in a country where every Poya Day is a public holiday?
The only country in the world with such public holiday.
what is the economic loss to the country?
Not sure which stupid politician implemented this , would any Sinhala politician have the courage to ban Poya Day Holiday?

Christians go to church on Sunday as they believe Sunday is the day Christ Jesus was resurrected.
if Christ was resurrected on a Wednesday….would the week begin on Thursday and end on Wednesday?

      You are correct.
      .
Countries With Buddhist Full-Moon Observances — but NOT Monthly Public Holidays:
      1. Thailand
Full moon days are religiously significant.

Only major Buddhist full-moon festivals (e.g., Visakha Bucha, Makha Bucha, Asalha Bucha) are public holidays.

Not every full moon is a holiday.

      2. Myanmar (Burma)

Buddhist Uposatha days (full moons, new moons, quarter moons) are observed religiously, but only some full moons (e.g., Waso, Thadingyut, Tazaungdaing) are public holidays.

      Not monthly public holidays.

      3. Cambodia

Buddhist full moons are observed in temples.

The country has several Buddhist public holidays (e.g., Visak Bochea, Pchum Ben, Meak Bochea).

Monthly full-moon holidays do not exist.

      4. Laos

Buddhist ceremonies occur on full moons, but not national holidays every month.

      5. Bhutan

      A predominantly Buddhist country.

Buddhist festivals (Tsechus) are holidays, but not each full moon.

      6. Mongolia

Celebrates major Buddhist holidays, but not monthly full moons.

I could be wrong, but we were told at School that it was due to the Genesis God resting on the 7th Day and making it Holy.

You forgot Saudi , Thursday and Friday are the weekends .
Altogether God takes 4 days a week rest allowing his
slaves to fight among themselves over his existence . Three
days he is busy allowing food supplies so that the slaves
can go on fighting for ever . Keep it to yourself buddy , don’t

Some of my Buddhist friends and relatives may agree with you. However most of my Sinhala/Buddhist friends and relatives would not agree with you for them it is an additional day for drinking, eating and feeling and appearing joyful.

For the poor it is another day for forgetting the atrocious rule of the crooks as if the Poya day holidays would bring salvation from their bad karma.

          Hello Native,
The problem for most of my relatives here in Central Province with Poya Days is, if they are not working they are not earning.
My Stepson in Veyangoda is an Export Manager in an Apparel Company and is paid a Monthly Salary so for him it’s fine. However on the occasions when he visits us during Poya Days, he brings his Laptop with him and spends a few hours online sorting out problems etc. American style Company Culture and Practices get everywhere eventually😢.

But by your anti-American sentiment, you want to hang on LankaScot’s Munthanai, you explained that you never get whether American companies are Russian atheists or Langkang Sinhala Buddhists. You might still have one or two cells within the gray matter to grasp things, but it is your Munthanai holder, throw his hooks and drag you into his net to force you to start illumination with your newly attained confusion. He easily enslaves you because his math teacher seems to professionally be trained rather than the Bathiudeen arranged London guy for you. I always exasperate seeing your pathetic Karma situation, that is why that guy is doing this for you. I know the Langkang Pharmacy business is done in East Indian Ocean boats, unlike Maduro doing in West Indian Sea, though the guard dog is same one who tips to AKD. Kindly refer to Veeramani’s Youtube lectures on topology, if you are not good at logical inference. Open set, closed set, this is what children should be learning, not human rights and whether they are male, female, or Harry Potter, as in the UK.

Anyway, used goods is not a reference to Johnny Walker and Bata. It means “divorced women.” There are more colorful phrases in English. I prefer to be discrete; otherwise Old Pervert will use these new phrases to harass female commentators on CT. Also, the CT mod will not be happy, as this is a website for Jehan Perera, PhD types to showcase their research. Give me a fully uncensored forum, I will show you the English language at its best.

You are right that the Sri Lankan Army did some bad things (we can argue as to the degree). Personally, I blame the weather. Every tropical country has taken the piss. South America (drug trade) is far worse. Everyday people are chopped up and thrown in a ditch or the heads are left hanging on a bridge.

              • 5
                7

If Sri Lanka had snow, many of the problems you see now would disappear. Cold weather forces people to cooperate.
The other solution is to go back to monarchy. The issue is that Westerners (colonials) took away the monarchy in the colonies and replaced it with an aristocracy. The Westminister type government you have now works well for a capitalist-type system. For capitalism to achieve a certain level, a high degree of industrialization is necessary. That was not the case in Sri Lanka, it has never fully recovered from the mercantilist exploitation of the colonials. The development of a country is in direct proportion to the evolution of the economic system.

                  Letter to Max Born (1920s–30s)

                  Einstein once wrote to Born:

Assuming Einstein was not referring to the wife losing weight, the man believed in the supernatural.

“I want to know how God created this world. I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know his thoughts. The rest are details.” (The Expanded Quotable Einstein, Princeton University Press, 2000 p.202)

The Poya holidays are the outcome of the Poya week scheme introduced by the UNP-led national Government in 1965. Sundays were replaced by full moon, new moon and two quarter moons. It was a system borrowed fro Burma at the time I guess.
        It was a mess.
Mrs B in 1971, to restore order, made a deal with the Sangha who agreed to the Sunday-Saturday week with each full moon day a public holiday.

Jolly making after a funeral also depends on the gravity of the death.

Nowadays you seem to be repenting a lot for bad mouthing SM when he was alive. I remember a couple of forum people had warned you when you crossed the line and used derogatory terms on him, yet you didn’t give a hoot. SM responded to you in the same manner but I watched his frustration boiling and finally he beginning to resign, for obvious reasons. I’ve had my share of arguments with him too, but we were always able to watch our language. Your remorse is a good sign that you accept you could be kinder to him. However, you still use similar language and terms on those who don’t agree with you in this forum like Douglas, let alone on politicians, so the spirit of your remorse may lose its power. My sincere advise to you is don’t be another sample for “doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result”.

In Lanka, of 25 identified public holidays, the poya day is fiddled so that a little more than their fair share falls on weekends. So we have like 7 or 8 week-day poya days. Also any public holiday except Good Friday had a 30% chance of falling in a weekend. We may thus be cheated out of 9 or ten holidays.
    *
Iran probably has more public holidays than us. They are not doing badly given the sanctions and other such bullying.

“the poya day is fiddled so that a little more than their fair share falls on weekends.”

Do we know the masterminds of Poya holidays under Srivo government and special status to Buddhism which still used by both Namal and Ranil?
The government led by Dudley Senanayake introduced the Poya holiday in Sri Lanka in 1966, replacing the traditional Saturday and Sunday weekend with days based on the lunar calendar
In 1970, the policy was changed by Srimavo government to restore the traditional weekend holidays and keep only the full moon (Poya) day as a public holiday.

            Here is your answer:
“Technically, the point at which the Moon is “full” lasts only an instant. To the naked eye, though, the Moon can appear to be full for upwards of three days. Also, the exact time of full moon can occur at any time of the day, even during the middle of the day, as you can see from the table of full moon times”

It is better than Sri Lankan state employees going to work, whether they are present at the desk or not the net effect is the same. Do they get any work done while they are at their desk?

At the desk: no work gets done.
Not at the desk: still no work gets done.

The union stalwarts know how state institution are being run hence they should demand 2 days work per month with full salary. We could save lot of electricity, petrol, …. etc let them stay at home and do some home gardening.

I struggle to understand the practice of erecting religious statues as a way to claim land or assert dominance. When such actions occur in areas where minority communities—such as Tamil-speaking or Christian groups—live alongside Sinhala-speaking Buddhists, it risks deepening divisions rather than fostering harmony. .
Imagine a future where, after a natural disaster, advanced technology uncovers that the land was once filled with statues, raising questions about the motives and intentions behind these efforts. Even if such initiatives succeed in altering the demographics of the north and east and eventually convert everyone to Buddhism, these practices could spark disputes between Tamil and Sinhala Buddhists over ownership centuries later, or even lead to tensions with Sinhala-speaking Christians if statues are placed near churches. It’s worth asking why these actions are tolerated without meaningful response from the general public.

“I struggle to understand the practice of erecting religious statues as a way to claim land or assert dominance.”
That needs little struggle to understand.
Several of our archeologists can invent ancient artifacts anywhere they are asked to.

If, Galaboda Atte Ganasara, Uduwe Dhammaloka, Balangoda Kassapa, Omalpe Sobitha, Bengamuwe Nalaka, Samatha Baddra, Ampitiye Sumanrathana, Athuraliye Rathana, Iththekande Sumana, Walawhanguna Vawave, and many more who form this “GANG” are not wearing the ‘SAFFRON CLOTHES’, and are clad in ordinary men’s clothing, do you think they could or would be allowed to enjoy the ‘IMPUNITY’ of the destruction they are imposing on the teaching of Gautama Buddha and the society that follows the teachings?

Not really. It is this ‘Uniform’ – ‘Saffron Clothe’ – ‘ Buddha Cheevaraya’ that has provided a shield for all of these ‘Thugs’ to hide in and commit all these ‘CRIMES’ with impunity. Once they are clad in this ‘Uniform’, no Government or any Law Enforcement dare to confront them. Under any Government, these ‘THUGS’ thrive because all the politicians are scared to death to bring them to book, unless otherwise no political party will be installed in power. Anyone trying to Bell the Cat will be exterminated. That is the naked ‘TRUTH’. This ‘GANG’ is cancerous to the country and the Nation.

For a considerable period I have been thinking of switching my profession, I would like to set up my own rent a mob employment agency and on the side I want to take up mugging, of course as a start up venture.

To be on the safe side would you advise me to design my company overall/uniform in the style of Cheevaraya?

The author, ” Tisaranee” is excited about a lifeless statue, because it provides yet another opportunity to slander Rajapakse, who has nothing to do with statues. In any case, ” Tisaranee” should comment on the dozens of churches built on the island (without the permission of the natives) by the Europeans, that were then used to proselytize tens of thousands of people. Some of the Vellalar who benefited from this proselytizing were angry about their civil service privileges being slashed (post-independence) and funded suicide terrorism for three decades.

What does ” Tisaranee” have to say about the mosque in Kattankudy built entirely with Saudi money, that promoted Wahhabi terrorism and contributed to the Easter attacks?

All these prominent politicians, from all the major political parties, down south, whilst inciting Sinhalese Buddhist fanaticism and racism against the island’s Tamils and Tamil speakers, and the destruction of ancient Hindu structures, especially in the Tamil/Tamil speaking north and east and converting them to Sinhalese Buddhist places of worship, using fairy tales provided by the so called archaelogical departmant. Constantly go to South India and pray at many major Hindu temples, asking for the Hindu god’s blessings. Thirupathi, Madurai Meenakshi Amman, Guruvayoor or Kuruvayoor. The irony is that these are all ancient Tamil Hindu temples. Even though Thirupathi, which is now just over the border, is in Telugu Andhra, and Guruvayoor is now in Kerala, which was once Tamil Chera Nadu around 900 years ago. There is a saying in Tamil,” Padikirathu Thevaram, anal idikiarathu Sivan Kovil”, which means whilst singing praises to god, you destroy his temple. This is what they are up to.

“without the permission of the natives”
Lester, don’t melt for natives. But isn’t it Kandy Ayatollahs, Ehelepola, Pilimatalawe, waged the war for that and composed and sang Kandyan agreement, signed 599 years lease, and European who ate free rice from Kandyans, took it as for entire Ceylon. It was the Kandyans sold in the country. That is how the Langkang is pawned now for lifetime for $110B, just like Old Rowdy King did the Hangbangtota?
“contributed to the Easter attacks “Don’t take Muslims into that. Jihadi war was a pure product of UP-SLFP-Union’s war to crown Gothapayal on the throne. It was Muslim Ministers bank rolled the money from Saudi Arabia. A lot of it is still left with Hezbollah, and he is out on a tour to buy gold for it.

We should not encourage the people who were protesting against the visit of a NPP minister. It has become a ritual for a certain group of the Tamil Diaspora.
Protests by these “T” group will only help the Rajapaksas and Gnanasara Thero types to get more energised.
Already NPP ministers are getting scared
This can be seen by the RETURN of the seaside Lord Buddha’s statue.
Are the “T” group being financed by the Rajapaksas or their ex-tiger slaves —-> Karuna Douglas Pillaiyan etc. It’s time for this “T” group to disintegrate/fold all the tiger flags and put it away for ever.
    OR
Take the flags and go and protest at the Trinco beach /Claim a beach area and keep a Lord GANESHA’s statue!
Should not WE STRENGTHEN the hands of AKD by supporting the current Government at this critical juncture of SL politically economically socially etc.
How far we can be behind ITAK is a big QUESTION after seeing Chanakiyan R going to see Jeevan Thondaman getting married?
Are they really interested in the economically deprived SL Tamils?
After years of corrupt rule for so long selfishness shrewdness cunningness jealousy etc have become ingrained in all Sri Lankans.
There is an urgent need for all PROGRESSIVE like minded SRILANKAN people from all backgrounds to get together.
This has to happen not only in SL but also in rest of the world (Diaspora)

Yes of course, listened to the parliamentary debate on budget, all three of them, Dilith Jayaweera, Sajith Premadasa, Namal Baby, were very unhappy about up country workers being rewarded extra Rs 200 from state coffer. All of them complained it was their money, money belonging to the Sinhala/Buddhists and how dare AKD pay them day in day out from treasury.

They have finished with Trincomalee and Amparai, now they have started on Batticaloa, the heartland of the eastern province, and a strong Tamil/Tamil speaking bastion where Sinhalese are around 2% and this former largely racist JVP NPP government is supporting these racist moves by the so-called fake Archaeological department that is run by extremist Buddhist monks and Sinhalese Buddhist Fascists who want to destroy the anceint Hindu Tamil history and heritage of this area and claim everything for Sinhalese Buddhism, using again the power of the state, the Sinhalese armed forces and police.

Video of the Sinhalese Archaeological Department arriving today with the Sinhalese police to intimidate local Tamil people in the Batticaloa area to plant boards and claim lands as ancient Sinhalese Buddhist lands in an ancient Tamil Hindu area, at the NPP minister’s instruction. Nothing is going to change; this government is as racist as all other previous ones. Aiding and abetting Sinhalese Buddhist extremism at the expense of the island’s Tamil speakers. First, they will claim these strategic lands as ancient Sinhalese Buddhist and will claim to have found Buddhist artefacts (sic). Then declare the land sacred and ban the local Tamils from their villages and farms, then erect a Buddhist Vihara and Pansala and later start colonising the area with outside Sinhalese and change the place name. Champa will be consulted, and the grandma living the good life in the USA will be happy

Tamil Speaking SL citizens (TSC) doesn’t believe that the government archeological department works with unbiased truthful way. They collude with Security Forces, Buddhist monks and Sinhala racists and to get as much lands possible in the North and East of the country. If this continues then it will be not be possible for any kind of reconciliation & peaceful coexistence.
The Archeological Government Department should work along with EXPERTS from world wide institutions & universities. They should study the sites of interest methodically and scientifically.
We have seen in the past how the violent thugs and priests trying to implant surreptitious objects into the areas they like to take over. The Country has to be SECULAR and neutral. Time we have a new Constitution for Sri Lanka first prior to any kind of Elections

Correct. The history of Saivaism is far older than that of Buddhism, and numerous ancient prehistoric Saivite sites are scattered throughout the country. And many have now been converted to Buddhist sites, Eg, Kathirkammam, a prehistoric site worshipping Tamil Lord Muruga, a huge Buddhist stupa has been erected with state funds, whilst the ancient Hindu site remains neglected and the place name changed from Tamil Kathirkammam to Sinhalese Katharagama. Devinuwara is another; this is the 5th ancient Ishwaram, Thondeswaram( English corruption Dondra), now a famous Buddhist temple. Many of these ancient Buddhist temples are built on ancient Hindu sites. However, this fake archaeological run by Sinhalese extremists, colluding with the Sinhalese armed forces, police, Buddhist monks and Sinhalese racists, has no interest in revealing this truth, as it is against Sinhalese Buddhist supremacy and the lie and myth that the land only belongs to Sinhalese Buddhists. Moreover, many of these ancient Buddhist ruins in the north and east are Tamil, not Sinhalese, as falsely claimed, as there were numerous ancient Tamil Buddhists.

” The history of Saivaism “
        Which Saivaism?
Tamils heard of Shiva only in late Sangam period.
What Tamils have now is post Adi Shankara.

        • 4
          1

No, Tamils did not only hear of Lord Siva in the late Sangam period; references to Siva appear in Sangam literature, though not always by that exact name. While some local deities were more prominent, evidence suggests that worship of Siva (often referred to by other names, such as civan) was present during this period, and Tamil tradition also has ancient roots connecting Siva to the language itself, predating the earliest Sangam works. Keep on trolling, bullying, nitpicking and trying to discredit me.

            0

Give me a shred of evidence from early Sangam literature that refers to the five Tamil gods.
Stop lying and I will not contest your falsehoods.

“ancient prehistoric Saivite sites are scattered throughout the country”
        Like?

        • 4
          1

This is why the name of the father of the king who converted to Buddhism was King Mootha Sivan, meaning the venerated or great Lord Siva, and his older brother was King Maha Sivan, meaning the Great Lord Siva, proving that when Buddhism arrived on the island 2300 years ago, the religion Saivaism was thriving. Thirukeetheswaram in Mannar is over 2000 years old and so are the other 4 Iswarams. Their present structures are medieval or recent, as the Portuguese destroyed them. Kathirkamam is prehistoric. Good try. Saivism has a deep and enduring connection with Tamil culture, particularly through the Saiva Siddhanta tradition, which drew heavily on the devotional hymns of the Tamil Nayanars from the 5th to 9th centuries. The relationship between Saivism and the Tamils is complex, having evolved from ancient religious coexistence to a modern reinterpretation within the context of Tamil identity and nationalism.

Sorry, it was the younger brother who was named Maha Sivan and also had a younger brother, Maha Naga, meaning the great Naga, proving they were all Saivite Nagas before they converted.

Since there are no more Tamil Buddhists, this fake Archaeological Department is now falsely trying to claim all ancient Tamil Buddhist ruins in the North East as Sinhalese to appropriate as much land as possible here and settle Sinhalese and destroy the Tamil Hindu character of the north east. We also have a history of violent thugs and Buddhist priests, with the help of the Sinhalese Archaeological Department, the armed forces, powerful Sinhalese racists in and out of all governments and the Buddhist clergy, planting old Buddha statues, other Buddhist objects and other objects at various strategic and fertile areas in the north and east, especially along the borders,, that they want to take over, and then come and pretend to dig them out and claim that these areas were once ancient Sinhalese areas, like a few here do. Recently, they have discovered an ancient Tamil Brahmi stone writing in the Amparai district that is around 2200 years old, but nothing is done about it, as this strengthens the case of the ancient Tamil habitation of the north and east, they do not want this.

    • 9
      6

They want by hook or by crook to claim the entire island for Sinhalese Buddhism, just like the way their Mahavamsa fairy tale told them. Lots of ancient Tamil artefacts and writings found are destroyed or kept hidden and never come to light, or falsely claimed to be Sinhalese Prakrit, as no one supervises them, or there is no expert from worldwide institutions and universities giving a second opinion. Look at their logo, it has a huge Buddhist Vihara, openly stating they are promoting Sinhalese Buddhism, when this so-called department has to be secular in a multi ethnic, multi-religious and multi-lingual land. Even these poor Tamil peasants desperately fighting to keep their lands and living from these state-sponsored racist goons and fake Sinhalese Archaeological department know this and what is in store for them. As seen on the video, they themselves are asking that the north and east are full of many ancient Hindu religious sites, artefacts and Tamil inscriptions, but you are not interested or keen to find them or dig for them, but go around everywhere desperately looking for so-called Buddhist ruins

    • 9
      6

Only, many of which are fake and the artefacts are planted there by you, claim our lands for Sinhalese Buddhists. Like the elderly woman loudly stated, they will come here stake our lands, roads and fields, in the name of their fake Archaeology and then use the Sinhalese Police, armed forces and government apparatus to deny us access to our lands, and soon you will see Buddas statues, Buddhist structures and a Pansala being built there and the land claimed for Sinhalese Buddhism. Even these poor Tamil peasants know this, and this is why they are desperately protesting. You can see young mothers have come in the rain with their children to protest desperately to save their homes, lands and their ancient Tamil Hindu heritage. As that man stated, they will not allow us to live in peace; they think we Tamils are so low and a defeated people that they can do anything in our areas with impunity, using the power of the Sinhalese state. This area if full of ancient Tamil Hindu heritage and history; they know this and have come here to destroy it with fake Buddhist sites and claims.
