The Sirisena Surge – And Why Mahinda Is Still Way Ahead

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

Two cheers then for Maithripala Sirisena whose act of resistance and rebellion is truly heroic. Why cheer at all? And why two cheers instead of three?  Hearty cheers are entirely warranted because Maithripala Sirisena has produced a Black Swan event; a real game changer.

Having argued in the print and electronic media for years that Ranil Wickremesinghe should not be the Opposition’s presidential candidate, that a viable Opposition candidate must be one whose profile would cut into the incumbent’s monopoly of populist-patriotism, and as someone who has commended Maithripala Sirisena on many of my fortnightly TV shows, I am delighted at his candidacy. However, I am unconvinced about his electoral prospects and platform.

Maithripala Sirisena has rendered the Presidential election a real race instead of the walkover it would have been with Ranil Wickremesinghe as Mahinda’s opponent.

More importantly he has reintroduced competition and balance into a hitherto unipolar system.

Even if he loses the Presidential election, he would hopefully have founded a dissident SLFP; a centrist alternative to the populist neo-conservatism of the Rajapaksa regime.

Thereby he would have made feasible the prospect of defeating the government at the parliamentary election or at a referendum.

That’s the upside; now for the downside. For starters the joint Opposition’s widely-rumored plan to defeat the Budget is short-sighted. This Budget was intentionally populist in content and character, and any defeat in the legislature will permit the President to credibly depict the joint opposition as having deadlocked the process which would have permitted material benefits to accrue to the public. As the public did when Congress gridlocked President Obama, public opinion will swing against the parliamentarians and in favor of the incumbent. He will then prorogue parliament, hold the Presidential election, and translate his victory into a renewed dominance of the legislature.

That isn’t even the main weakness of the Sirisena challenge. The flaws in the joint opposition platform were all on display at the inaugural media conference. Maithripala Sirisena himself fared well, pitching it more or less right. Then it all began to go retro and sag, with Rajitha Senaratne taking too much time with his political autobiography –one would have thought him the candidate rather than Sirisena—followed by a prolonged and self-justificatory lamentation by CBK.

This poses the question as to whether Maithripala will be allowed to offer a better future for the country – a “Maithripaalanaya”—or whether the message is that of a return to the golden era of the Bandaranaikes, and especially of CBK. This is of no small consequence. The utterly fundamental fact that Mr. Sirisena’s loquacious companions at the media conference (who should have left time for Vasantha Senanayake and Arjuna Ranatunga some speaking time) failed to grasp is this: the vast majority of this country clearly and emphatically prefer the flawed but peaceful present, to the past of war and weakness as a nation. Simply put, if the choice is the flawed present and memories of the past, the voters much prefer the Mahinda Rajapaksa present—siblings and all– to the Chandrika past. The country was ripped apart and the State was weak then. We are at peace and much stronger now. That is something that neither CBK nor Rajitha seem to understand.  This was the fatal flaw of Sirimavo Bandaranaike too—she just did not get the point that in the public mind, even JR Jayewardene’s presidency seemed vastly better than the memories of her glorious years at the helm.

Maithripala Sirisena must foreground himself and not CBK. He must seem a kinder gentler Mahinda Rajapaksa, just as Clinton seemed a kinder gentler Reagan and Tony Blair a kinder gentler Thatcher, who would consolidate the positives of their formidable predecessors, while moving forward, not back to the future.

Compounding these weaknesses is the very weakest point in the Maithripala Sirisena platform: his promises to abolish the executive Presidency in one hundred days and to appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as his PM. In the first place there isn’t a shred of evidence in the form of a public opinion poll that the majority of voters wish the executive Presidency abolished. Thus Maithripala’s campaign seeks to convince the voters of two things, not just the one—turn away from Mahinda Rajapaksa and endorse a radical, potentially risky dismantling of an entire system. This would turn the Presidential election into a double referendum—on Mahinda Rajapaksa who dominates the political landscape and on the executive presidency which the masses have become accustomed to over for decades. Now that’s a tall order. In a conservative society that’s far too much of a psychological change to expect in a short time and in one fell swoop. It is too much to swallow. Athureliya Rathana and Champika Ranawaka’s suggestion of a slimmed down Presidency is much more palatable.

As if this weren’t bad enough, there is Maithripala’s pledge to make Ranil the PM. Why should anyone vote for Maithripala if he is not going to be the president after a hundred days while Ranil is going to be PM? What happens to the man the people have voted for, after the act of abolition? Since the Prime Ministership is going to be the power center after the Executive presidency is dismantled, would the people wake up to find they had unwittingly elected Ranil as their leader? If not, and if Maithripala is going to the Executive PM, then what happens to Prime Minister Ranil?

There are plenty of reasons to vote for Maithripala if he were running for the presidency, pure and simple. He may lead the country better, if only because Mahinda Rajapaksa has allowed himself to be a poster boy for his family clan and their thuggish and crooked courtiers. But why should anyone vote for Maithripala only to find that Ranil and Chandrika are back in power, having done what they tried to but failed to do in 2005, colluding against Mahinda? Are we to move forward or backwards? If the voters sense a risk that it will be a ride back on a time machine; that Maithripala will be used, dominated and discarded by Ranil and Chandrika; that he is just a front man for them rather than his own man, then the voters will, quite understandably and even rightly, opt to remain with Mahinda.

Without a clear roadmap, the voters are being asked to opt for something like chaos and a political vacuum. Right now, the joint opposition’s discourse is a lot of white noise.

Both Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena seem like masks or human shields for their respective blocs: Mahinda for his avaricious family-centred oligarchy and Maithripala for Chandrika, Ranil and the old guard. Of these two combinations, the collective Sinhala voter psyche will almost certainly prefer Mahinda and Gotabaya to Maithripala, Ranil and CBK.

There is only one way to rectify and thereby save the Maithripala campaign and the political space he has opened up. Only one way to prevent this moment from ending up like the Arab Spring, with the Empire striking back due to the dumbness of the democratic Opposition. That is  to bring in Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Champika Ranawaka and Sajith Premadasa — sharp young personalities and compelling speakers, none of whom are yesterday’s men — to the centre of the policy process, the campaign planning and the head table, flanking Maithripala.  Mr. Sirisena is a brave and decent man; possibly our last hope. He deserves better than to be overshadowed or drowned out by his current companions and patrons who represent and recall the failures of a past from which Mahinda Rajapaksa, to his lasting credit, rescued the country.

      Dayan, Mathripala Sirisena and CBK and reclaiming the SLFP from the corrupt Rajapaksa brothers. They were showing that they are the REAL SLFP and the Rajapaksa brothers are not the SLFP. CBK and Maithripala together can isolated and exposed Jarapassa brothers in all their greed as the destroyers of the SLFP and democracy in Lanka. This is why CBK must speak and say that the joint opposition is also the real SLFP and a National Platform to Save Sri Lanka from the Gaddhaffi family of Sri Lanka that is turning it into a dictatorship;

The joint opposition needs to run a Positive Campaign and EDUCATE SINHALA MODAYA.
      1. Need for Good Governance to ensure that everyone benefits from Development.
      2. Make the Economic argument – that today there is only jobless and boru growth and very little foreign direct investment and a pile of DEBT.
      3. The REAL ECONOMY is in shambles due to corruption and neopotism. The only strategy of development that Jarapassa has is Tourism which generates coolie jobs.
      4. Focus on EDUCATING the Sinhala Moda voters: This is a time for change and PEOPLE-CENTERED Development and Economic growth to help the people reap the benefits of growth, rather than the corrupt Rajapaksa Jarapassa family.
      5. Start a civil disobedience campaign to rip down Jarapassa’s posters that are polluting the roads with the JVP and UNP youth wings.

DJ get a grip, and get a life! Don’t be so idiotic, self referential and stop and jumping the gun!

A GENERAL ELECTION will naturally follow abolition of EP and both Ranil and Maithreepala Sirisena will to out of job..
A new and hopefully cleaner parliament will be elected once Executive Prezidency is abolished,
Ranil is a born loser, everyone knows it and it was only to get him and UNP on board to support the joint opposition candidate that he was mooted as interiem PM.
Sirisena is intereme president who will call for elections before out of job! Get a grip DJ!

And DJ, stop being so arrogant and condescending to the poor Sinhala Modayas – saying that they cannot deal with uncertainty of abolishing the EP which you seem to like! Jarapassa has turned everything upside down before our very eyes and everything is corrupt, rotten and uncertain right now!

Don seems like you cracked it!!! SLFP against the real SLFP. So where does the UNP enter into the equation? Is this the so called “sinhala Modayas” section of the populous? UNP voting for an SLFP leader? Could you imagine what die hard UNPers are going through now? Dudley, JR Premadasa will turn in their graves if this happen.

I think your hatred of Rajapaksas has overtaken your political and economic nous.

Also you seem to repeat the “Sinhala Modaya” theme much too often with no due respect to the nation. Your posting clearly shows your thinking process 9or the lack of it). You need not make much of an to effort revisit CBK, RANIL era to see how the economy and the social fabric was then.
Having said all this I agree with Dayan’s comments on the current predicament we are in with nepotism, thuggery and corruption rife. It is time there is lasting solution to rid of these with doe one with a true commitment.

People in SL dont give a sh1t what happens to SLFP. Sri lanka’s old party traditions are no more.

It is debatable to what an extent Maithree can break MR’s votes from the so called SLFP vote base.

The truth is as dayan says, CBK is a symbol of failure, corruption. And this executive presidency removing attempt is a poor decision.
As dayan rightly says this becomes a referendum where people have to select between no executive and executive…

Anyway i too agree when you say, opposition’s main idea in their election campaignn should be

        1. Economic mismanagement
        2. Economic mismanagement
        3. Instability and lack of rule of law.

Opposition can very well talk about UPFA PS chairmen rape cases, robberies, corruption in COPE reports, how athakota terrorized people in Kegalle supported by Maheepala herath,

How MR’s men made a teacher knelt down. There are close to one hundred teachers in this country. (close to 1 lakh votes) and with relatives of that teachers that amount doubles.

Talk about how Gov is treating war heros not SF, but our soldiers whose funds are too being robbed by gov goons…

These are the issues that really affect public mindset.

As dayan rightly said, Rajitha should not take central stage. People in SL majority Sinhalese do not agree with Rajitha. So Rajitha is destroying the Maithreepala campaign…

When Maithreepala gave his speech in the first press conference it really did touch public’s heart. He knew how to talk to ppl, unlike our Ranil.

So dont throw away Rajitha and make him speak what public does not want to hear.

They CBK and Sirisena represent the REAL SLFP and the Rajapaksa brothers are not the SLFP which they have turned into a FAMILY BUSINESS.
CBK and Maithripala together can isolate and expose Jarapassa brothers in all their greed as the destroyers of the SLFP and democracy in Lanka.

RE: The Sirisena Surge – And Why Mahinda Is Still Way Ahead

Now The Sirisena Surge – And Why Mahinda Is NOT Still Way Ahead is BECAUSE of CORRUPTION, NEPOTISM THAT WAS AND IS BEING SUPPORTED BY SHILLS AND HEADWAITERS AND WHITEWASHES OF RAJAPAKSA LIKE YOU.

      http://www.lankatruth.com/home/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7830:division-in-state-media-&catid=42:smartphones&Itemid=74

After Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena announced at a media conference today (21st) that he would come forward as the common candidate of the opposition a deep division has occurred in the state media say reports.

The division has occurred within the National TV, ITN, Lakhanda Radio, SLBC and Lake House. According to media reports journalists and officials who had acted in favour of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa have been flabbergasted and are unable to carry out their duties.

Most of them seem to be supporting Mr. Maithripala Sirisena and it would come to the open soon say reports.

    Here we go again!
Early in his dissertation, DJ says, ” As the public did when Congress gridlocked President Obama, public opinion will swing against the parliamentarians and in favor of the incumbent. He will then prorogue parliament, hold the Presidential election, and translate his victory into a renewed dominance of the legislature.”

Perhaps, he’ll tell us what happened to Mr. Obama’s Democrats, even those who deliberately and gutlessly distanced themselves from their President, at the just-concluded mid-term elections to Congress!

This is nothing but yet another attempt to sway opinion into voting for Mahinda Rajapakse, the Great Saviour, couched in slightly more sophisticated terms than the usual. The only thing missing here is a harking back to the “Geneva Victory” which proved to be exactly the Pyrrhic one that many described it as at the time.

His attempt at a closing swipe at Maithripala Sirisena says it all: “….his current companions and patrons who represent and recall the failures of a past from which Mahinda Rajapaksa, to his lasting credit, rescued the country.”
“Rescued?” What this country is undergoing now amounts to a “rescue?” There is a pithy Sinhala saying that speaks about the man who fell from a tree only to be gored by a bull. Isn’t that closer to our current reality than your “rescue,” Dr. J?

      Emil van der Poorten,

Yes, this so called expert never even imagined that Sirisena will emerge as the common candidate! The expert analyzers are simply experts in boosting their egos.

Past is history, but future is a mystery: If anybody claims to predict the future, he is no better than an astrologer earning a living out of fooling the believers.

All the experts on CT have been proved wrong now, let them tuck in their tails between their legs and stay put.

      van der Poorten,

As a cry-loud about coruuption of the regime and president’s family, how do you reconcile Maithreepala’s brother’s legendary money making under the regime.

His brother “Dudley” just had a five star hotel opened at Nuwara Eliya by the president himself! Apparently it cost him 5 Million US. He bacame a dollar millionaire from pennyless old “Dudley”. He is also the leading rice trader in the country, and he has used his power against the police.

Where do you think “Dudley” got the powers to do all that?

So is it that “kanna ona wunahama kabara goyath thala goya wenavalu” with you? Try to be honest for once.

This “defection” was orchestrated by the British, US and Norwegian embassies and their local agents. They have given a sattelite phone to Chandrika to use! They will use any thief they can to topple this government. But the Sri Lankan voter will answer them the proper way.

By the way, “Dudley” has jumped the coop after the brother’scross over, showing his colours.

It might help if you at least deal with the issues I’ve raised, leave alone dispute them.
You and your ilk have a standard response to anything resembling criticism of those you venerate: accuse them of being party to some weird and wonderful conspiracy theory, inclusive of accepting cellphones as bribes! If you have the ability to do so, why don’t you simply deal with what I’ve raised or am I, in your book, yet another spy for the Norwegians or Greenlanders or some such exotic breed and not, therefore, worthy of the application of your rather limited intelligence?

This is a great article after all the white noise and false hope propaganda we have been seeing after the announcement. But given that the ‘hope’ of CBK and Ranil leaving the center stage is not going to materialize, Dayan is hinting that we are better off with the nepotism and corruption we have seen for the last few years? By voting for Sirisena, are we voting for a executive PM position which is guaranteed for Ranil? I’m still so much of a floating vote!

i think his point is Sirisena movement which is good has still few errors. If we mend these errors we can go ahead with this Maithreepala movement ahead. So lets mend this error.

Either we win or make MR realize that a considerable size of sinhala people do not approve what MR is doing with our country, we do not like them playing with our country, which is our children’s future. So even if Maithree defeats, it would be a difficult victory for MR giving him a shock of reality.

…’bring in Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Champika Ranawaka and Sajith Premadasa’ – Bring from where? They are already there. AKD openly said JVP will support a common candidate (what else you want?) Sajith P has given his assurances already. Last night he has even suggested an economic package for the poor mass as a good gesture to Maithipala Sirisena, the idea which appreciated by CBK & RW both. Champika Ranawaka along with Ven Rathana was the one who gave an unforgettable birth day present to Mara.

Maithripala needs the bulk of UNP votes (around 40%)to win the presidential election. Being an SLFPen he will also need to get the extra 11% vote from his party loyalists and the minorities- which will also cut into MR’s vote base. This is the basis for selecting him as the common candidate instead of Ranil or Karu.

Unless he commits now Ranil as the executive PM UNPens will not come out to vote for him. He is only contesting as a proxy for Ranil.

I pity this seasoned political analyst and his above analysis.

    • 4
      1

Acumen, thank you for this great analysis. Calculations I have made shows Mr Sirisena needs only 32% UNP votes only, remainder coming from SLFP 14.5%; Tamil diaspora providing the remaining 4.5%. Remember he does not need 51% flat.Even 50.0001% should be sufficient.

    • 3

Exactly. The whole plan is,EAT into SLFP vote base.Banda,
Sirimavo,CBK all mentioned to own a share of SLFP votes.
Rajitha and CBK taking more time is nothing important
against Maithri’s time. What’s more important is the
GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE SLFP UNDER TWO PRESIDENTS,LEFT
THE JOB AND THE MINISTRY TO SAVE HIS PARTY AND THE
COUNTRY FROM THE PSEUDO PATRIOTS,AT A VERY CRUCIAL
MOMENT to JOIN HANDS TO DEFEAT THE REAL THREAT TO THE
FUTURE OF THIS NATION.People have started to realize the
dangers of executive presidency if allowed to continue.
DJ says “there isn’t a shred of evidence in the form of
public opinion poll” against executive presidency.
Why then both CBK and MR promised to abolish it if
elected?Do we have to believe that you, an expert didn’t
know this?Majority of politicians agree that EP is the
curse and it makes anyone a devil especially many in the
UPFA didn’t expect MR to abuse it to this magnitude so
openly and indifferently. If Ranil even very honestly
promised to abolish it,nobody will believe it and truly
UNP won’t manage to do it either. So,A new face, with
almost all parties agreeing, leaving no room for doubts,
will succeed to win public confidence.Encouraging must
be the part of DJ’s responsibility.

Usual name droppings…Obama, Clinton, Blair, Thatcher….Sri Lanka is not an educated elctorate ..the Sinhala Modaya rural voters, I bet never heard of these names.

Further for the educated Sri Lankan masses , unlike in the USA and UK, in Sri Lanka there is no impartial press coverage or debate.

However there is a vlaid point about aboilishing EP within 100 days. So the King Srisena wil be without the kingdom and he becomes a king maker and who wants Ranil or CBK as the new king is the argument.

I am sure this will be addressed by the joint opposition. I think there will be an intital curbing of th President’s power followed by abolisihing of EP , reinstall paliamentary democracy followed by general elction. These will all take some time arleast a couple of years.

By that time Rajapkase’s will be in the gallows for war crimes.

    Dayan

Rather than writing this in the CT, you should have explained all these to your Darling friend Prof Rajiv W.

He is going to be the Minister of ENGLISH education in Maithripala Sirisena cabinet.

Rajapaksa brothers didn’t count on his proficiency in English.

From behind scene, Mohan Peris – CHEAP Justice damaged him and Mahinda Samarasinghe – Oberai Hotel waiter.

Are you ambitious about an Ambassador post to Cuba or China? If so, hold the saree of CBK.

      Silva are you mad?

As long as Knishka Seneviratne is the Foreign Secretary, Dayan can’t think of any post in the Ministry of External Affairs. Bad comes to worse, she will arrange Vasu to deal with Dayan.

I think Dr. DJ’s mind is too obsessed with his ingrained anti Ranil feelings he is unable to see clearly what the rest of the country is seeing now. Come 9th morning January 2015, Maithripala will be the victor – hands down. However there are other threats like large scale vote rigging, intimidation and thuggery that can take place and “steal” the election. The MR and Co have the means and the resources for such a move.

This is where the opposition has to be smart. Come nomination day (9th Dec 2014) opposition must have a plan B. That is if something untoward happens (God forbid) to Maithripala AFTER nomination they must have a “Sleeping Candidate” in the ballot paper. If something untoward happens Maithripala, (opposition without a “Sleeping Candidate” )MR will have a one horse race. This “Sleeping Candidate” cannot be in the calibre of Ranil/Karu/SF/AKD/Premadasa as this would split votes. The “Sleeping Candidate” should be a well known personality to the whole country with clean hands. It is here that Arjuna Ranatunga fits the bill perfectly. He should be the “Sleeping Candidate”. He has a universal appeal to all. I hope this is the reason AR is given prominence at every Common Opposition platform.

“Why should anyone vote for Maithripala if he is not going to be the president after a hundred days while Ranil is going to be PM? What happens to the man the people have voted for, after the act of abolition? Since the Prime Ministership is going to be the power center after the Executive presidency is dismantled, would the people wake up to find they had unwittingly elected Ranil as their leader? If not, and if Maithripala is going to the Executive PM, then what happens to Prime Minister Ranil?”

Dr. DJ, are you serious? You think that this Common Opposition group has not thought this through? Do you really think only you can see this scenario? This Common Opposition is VERY smart. They are way ahead of your thinking. They have a good solution for this. Remember this Common Opposition is only for the EP election. There lies the solution. Details will emerge as time goes on as Maithripala said at the press briefing.

DJ has forgotten to deal with Rajivas move: Simply put the vote for MS
is merely regime change called for internationally.

It is also possible that a “Ceremonial” President be created in CBK, whilst Ranil & MS (his 100 days sacrifice) will bethe new co-PM?

Whatever it be, MR and cabal are NOT going to take this twist in their
dynasty-build up finanaced by China, – it could take a
drastic turn after Nominations. We are living in times of corrupt
      murderers.

Well, yes now MR has a battle in his hands. This is a good thing.

Maithreepala faction will propose reforms. MR will have to match them or better them. This is the competition the public deserves.

    This is the time pundits like you need to guide people. You need to specify that whoever proposes reforms that the following reforms are needed;

    – Restores Parliamentary democracy
    – Brings in Freedom of Information (FOI) (Incredibly important)
    – Electoral reforms ala with FIRST-PAST-THE-POST.
    – Re-distributing ministries presently held by the exec i.e. defense, finance, law-and-order ministries to competent people.
    – A shadow cabinet announced based on competence alone.
    – A shadow cabinet restricted to bare minimum ministries.
    – 17 amendment in full
    – Reform of PCs and remove overlap along the lines disscussed by Prof. Dew Gunasekara
    – A bicameral legislative body as existed until 1972

With these reforms we can stop complaining for the next 10 years at least and leave politicians to do their jobs in peace.

A sensible analysis by Dayan J.

Both Chandrika and Rajitha are losers. So far, only a few relatively unknowns have broken away from the government. Karu Jayasuriya and a few other UNPers must be sulking. How large is Maithripala’s following among SLFPers? Will his candidacy be seen as merely making way for Ranil to be PM? What about the Tamil and Muslim votes? Certainly, Anura Kumara and Sajith, and also Rathana Thero must be persuaded to join the fold and campaign for Maithripala.

  • 1
    2

At elections people either venerate elephant symbol or hates it. So, if an outsider wants to win with traditional UNP votes, he has to contest with the elephant symbol. For obvious reason, Ranil didn’t give Fonseka the elephant symbol. With no elephant symbol, Fonseka hadn’t got as many votes as Ranil got in 2005. It seems this time also Ranil doesn’t want to give the elephant symbol to Maithree. Consequently, the traditional UNPers may be reluctant to go to the poling booth.

The moment Mathree says that he’ll appoint Ranil as Prime Minister he is guaranteed to loose the votes of those who hate the elephant symbol meaning SLFPers and leftists; they just don’t want Ranil to be the executive Prime Minister and face the tunes of UNP under any circumstances. Of cause a few Chandrika awalams who rode thavalams will vote for Maithree. In the end the same anti nationals lot who voted SF will rally round Maithree as they did to Fonseka. But that’s hardly enough to beat MR.

“With no elephant symbol, Fonseka hadn’t got as many votes as Ranil got in 2005.”

How do you know that it is the elephant symbol and not the war victory that was the reason for fonseka getting less votes than ranil?

I doubt that since the people are in a desperate situation now with the war in the kitchen they will not be very worried about symbols. They will be praying that they get someone who will govern well and ameliorate their suffering.By mid month they are running out of money due to the high cost of living and when they see the rulers and their thugs and cronies having a lavish lifestyle they must be getting livid.

They know that things are only going to get worse, not better and that’s why raja is having a early election. They are not fools.

He has been writing these types of craps for MARA to keep his record in tact with MARA, THE DICTATOR.

He thinks that the Sihalese are bloody fools to cling onto this MURDERER’S SATAKA indefinitely regardless of his murderous and treacherous record, with no solace in sight for the poor masses. It is definitely good for the boot lickers of MARA, like the Professor.

Surely, it is said that MOST OF THE GENIUSES ARE SOCIAL DISASTERS, THAT DEFINITELY MAKES SENSE IN DAYAN’S CASE. HOWEVER, RAJIVA HAS COME TO HIS SENSES, SINCE OF LATE AND HOPING AGAINST HOPE THAT, THE OTHER SOCIAL DISASTERS LIKE RAJIVA AND THE GANG FOLLOW SUIT.

IT IS OK PROFESSOR, IT IS BETTER LATE THAN NEVER…COME TO YOUR SENSES FOR HEAVEN SAKE AND ALSO FOR THE SAKE OF A CRYING NATION WHO ARE BEEN BLED TO DEATH BY YOUR MURDEROUS MASTER MARA.

DJ Has his contract to downgrade Ranil and promote
Sajith. This did not work. Now, as mentioned before he is trying to sit in the fence looking for opportunities under a new regime. Further he also
follows Sirasa/mtv pattern of destroying UNP/Ranil/Karu etc. Though sometimes these
Things succeed but not all the time.
The general public is intelligent to
understand the news makers, via press or electronic media and how much they are bullying.

    Aiyo Sirisena

The last chance to dethrone the Mad Raja is gone for good. Hey Sira, did you say that you will appoint that loser Ranil as your PM and you are going home. You remind us King Siri Sanagabo. You are really an honest Gamarala. So we are back to the era of MR plunder. Dr.DJ you hit the bulls eye.

  • 1

This really is a master stroke both by RW as well as CBK, but not for the reasons most people believe. The decision to select Mr.Sirisena as the common candidate gives us a lot of insight as to what the Sinhalese political elite believes is going to happen to SL in the international arena. I have always believed that Ranil should not contest the presidency until the matter of the UN investigation is concluded. Whoever is president when the axe falls on the GOSL will immediately be finished when it comes to Sinhalese politics. Why would anyone in their right minds want to stand under that axe? Certainly not Ranil, so he needs to find someone else, preferably outside his own party, to contest the election. In all likelihood MR is going to win this election and continue to be the president when the UN matter is settled in favor of the Tamil people. I have always believed that this would be the end of the political careers of anyone with the last name “Rajapakse”. I also believed that it would be the end of the Sri Lanka Freedom party as a viable political force. Nobody would ever vote for them ever again. That’s what I believed, until now. With Mr.Sirisena’s candidacy CBK and Ranil are trying to prevent the SLFP from becoming extinct. For that RW needs to be commended. Instead of solely focusing on the fortunes of the UNP, in an act of patriotism, he is trying to ensure the survival of a multi party system in post Eelam Sri Lanka.

Oh Dayan, why didn’t you warn your good friend Rajiva about your prediction of a Mahinda victory before he joined the opposition?

To be frank, I am a little perplexed by your penchant for the dictator who has eroded the democratic freedoms of the people, politicised the judiciary, allowed corruption to creep into every aspect of government, amassed immense wealth for himself and his family stealing from public coffers, allowed law and order situation to deteriorate, damaged Sri Lanka’s image in the international arena and more.

You recommend Anura Kumara and Champika to play a major part in an opposition government tells us how short your memory is. These two Sinhala racists playing any significant part in any government will definitely keep the flames of ethnic dicord burning. Premadasa is an untested politician who appears to have no demonstrable skills.

It appears that you fear that your Dear Leader, Mahinda Rajapaksa, will lose the election to Maithripala Sirisena. So taking a swipe at CBK and Ranil is a cunning attempt to sow the seeds of doubt among the electorate. I hope you wake up and see how Mahinda is destroying the country and join your pal Rajiva in supporting Sirisena. You have the best chance of getting an ambassadorial post under Sirisena that your estranged friend Mahinda, in my opinion.

Just because CBK and RS took more time for their speeches does not mean that people will not vote for Maithripla Sirisena. I do not know what Dayan drank or smoked to come out with this statement.

Secondly, just because Maithripala mentioned that Ranil will be made the PM, people will not vote for Maithripala seems to be a statement of a “Paid Servant” who is trying to suck up to Rajapakse.

In this column Dayan has not presented any valued argument but he has made statements which will not stand the test of time.

As his statements and comments during the last PC elections these statements of Dayan will also be proved wrong soon.

Personally I think Ranil should go on a long holiday. It is no good at all him in front line predicting to become Prime Minsiter if Sirisena won.
The whole country remember that he was the focus of Batalanda deaths and the massacre of the innocents along with the JVPers that was terrorising the country in the 80s. People also remember that it was Ranil who signed contracts with LTTE terrorists and Norwegians to sell out and partition our country. He proved himself to be a spineless coward and a loser. If he was there up front people will not have any trust on Sirisena either, just seen as a puppet to be manipulated by those old cronies of politics.
Champika, SF, Sajith, Arjun etc come to the front and push out CBK and RW to the backseats, much better for them go home or winter/xmas holidays.
The Country needs a strong leader that has the backbone to fight the lawlessness, injustice, corruption and dictatorship co0njoint with feudalism. Sirisena should not be seen as a wet nurse surrounded by untrustworthy politicians trying to re-enter politics and displace Sirisena at the next oportunity.

Mr Sirisena, show your mettle organizing your team first, before trying to reorganize the country. Show what you can do!

    Dayan!

    Your slip is showing Dayan.
Your project is to sing for Mahinda and arrest his dwindling voter base.
I am sure you are paid for your dirty work by Mahinda’s propaganda unit.

Without UNP votes Maithreepala cannot win. Hence he has to give the Prime Minister job to Ranil until new Parliamentary elections are held. The new Parliament will decide who the next PM is

It is better to form a national government(SLFP, UNP and other political parties )after the Presidential election and attend to the urgent needs such as adopting a new constitution.

After that people will decide who should govern Sri Lanka whether Maithree or Ranil.

Don’t belittle Chandrika’s impact. She is the one who can persuade dissident SLFP Ministers , MPs, provincial council members to support Maithree.

Go and listen to Samurdhi officers who were given free motor bikes by Mahinda .Already half of them are with Maithree.

It shows what is in store.

DJ claims “The country was ripped apart and the State was weak then. We are at peace and much stronger now. That is something that neither CBK nor Rajitha seem to understand” but as for Thamils there is no peace or justice. To them Rajapaksa’s rule is the worst in history. With 89,000 war widows, more than 90,000 IDPs waiting for resettlement and the greedy land grab by the occupation army Thamils are waiting for a chance to vote against this corrupt and authoritarian regime. In Valikaamam North the army has forcibly acquired 8,382 acres of ancestral property belonging to 25,000 families. These people are waiting with broomsticks to welcome Rajapaksa.

The 89000 war widows and 90000 IDPs were not created by MR. That was a continuously happening thing under the 30 year old war.

It was a result of War which you maintained and funded. So the one who is really responsible for war widows is rather the people who funded LTTE’s war. MR made the whole destruction stopped.

So Tamils are at a far and far better state under MR, ending of war itself is a reason for that.

The IDP situation was a creation by LTTE.
when they were outsmarted by SLA, LTTE dragged the people in villagers when they were retreating. These dragged villagers were used as a human shield. LTTE intended to create a humanitarian crisis. The ones who made the ppl into IDPs are LTTE who made them come with them at the point of a gun.

        sach

“The 89000 war widows and 90000 IDPs were not created by MR.”

How many war widows did MR “create”?

“The IDP situation was a creation by LTTE”

It was created by Premadasa. He armed and financed LTTE and asked the IPKF to leave. Had the IPKF stayed another couple of years LTTE would have been wiped out from the face of this world.
