The Specter Of Gotabaya

By Sarath De Alwis

Sarath De Alwis

If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear” ~  George Orwell

Memory’s struggle against forgetting

A specter is haunting our land. It is the specter of a Gotabaya Rajapaksa Presidency in 2020. We have forgotten how we feared Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s inviable hand on the levers of power before 8th January 2015. I am too old to care.

These words are written not in fear but in despair. As novelist philosopher Milan Kundera said in lyrical elegance, our struggle against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.

Just this morning Dinesh Gunewardena was brushing off the Rathpaswala shooting as just another happenstance on a TV program called ‘news line’. That was a clever line for the son of the father of Marxism who denuded the Sinharaja rainforest for a plywood factory in his backyard. We all carry heavy baggage.

Gotabaya and Mahinda

A conniving president

With a conniving President Sirisena quietly egging on, there is little or nothing to halt Gotabaya’s ideology of Sinhala Buddhist exceptionalism gnawing in to the primitive minds of a majority of our majority tribe.

It is said that the tycoon brother Dudley Sirisena is the facilitator of this Faustian compact. That makes sense. Billionaire oligarchs flourish with all powerful leaders. Janadhipathi Thaththa is assured of a quiet retirement retreat in the obscurity that awaits a shameless, fraudulent prophet.

A President’s nincompoopery

Trapped in myth and legend, insisted upon as our impeccable heritage by a Sinhala Buddhist clerical mafia, we are deprived of a supportive culture either capable or equipped to embrace human progress in this day and age.

Thanks to the nincompoopery of President Sirisena, the unthinkable now seems inevitable.

That is, unless, this parliament succeeds in abolishing the executive presidency.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa will surely end up the supreme law giver of this blessed island. And worse, it will be in the guise of redeemer of the Sinhala Buddhist tribe.

We must get our facts straight. While many were repelled by the debauchery of his governance, Mahinda was and still is the one dominant leader in our midst. The absence of any credible competitors makes him much taller than he really is. The circus of the last three years demonstrates the point. Sirisena parading on his SLFP leader stilts to come up to Mahinda’s chin!

The historic coalition that ousted the Mahinda regime in 2015 was entirely energized by a collective fear of the deep state that functioned under his brother – the then defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Gotabaya – an anatomy

The record shows Gotabaya Rajapaksa to be less of a soldier and more of a manipulator. He left active service at the height of the war, migrated, renounced his nationality and never set foot on the land of his birth until the brother contested the presidency.

Gotabaya is Cleonymus   the Athenian general who dropped his shield in battle and fled. But then, he made up for his abandonment by carefully constructing a persona of achiever, go getter and warrior hero capping his rise with a sycophant profiler obligingly producing a tome titled Gota’s War.

He jailed the soldier who won the war and claimed title to the victory with the Sangha notarizing the deeds.  Today he is well positioned to climb the greasy poll of power. He will do it with ease and relish. An obliging Buddhist Sangha fraternity will wipe off the grease with their saffron wraps and tilt the pole to an easy, accessible angle.

Giving the devil his due

That said, it must be recognized that as Defense Secretary he conceptualized the campaign that made soldiering for the legitimate state a righteous and virtuous calling.

Post war he made it a political project. The pride in the uniform and remembrance of the fallen were brilliantly used to capture the imagination of the nation.

That it produced a Sinhala Buddhist constituency for Gotabaya is an accidental by product. Gotabaya cannot be blamed for that. However, our common sense directs us to be alert to the danger. His gauleiters- General Kamal Gunaratne and Admiral Sarath Weerasekera have given us enough reason to be wary of a Gotabaya presidency.

The image of the heroic soldier was created at considerable moral cost. It totally rejected even the minutest empathy for the minorities whose genuine grievances were construed as an existential threat to the Sinhala people. Any empathy with the minorities- the Tamil people was identified with the coward, the malingerer and the deserter. It was a deliberate strategy. The man’s brilliance lies in his capacity to reinvent truth according to his personal agenda.

Why Gotabaya should be thwarted

A Gotabaya presidency promises a dreadful dystopia. It will bifurcate the Sinhala majority in to the heroic and the anti-heroic. The minorities, needless to say would be the enemy.

His ascendancy to power must be thwarted. Why? Because he is a vicious, vindictive, racist, control freak.

It is time to take stock of our predicament. We are a thinly disguised quasi theocracy. We are covered in a strange mosaic that combines the dark green battle fatigue of the patriotic soldier and the saffron robe of the patriotic priest.

Gotabaya has a finely tuned alliance with the Sinhala Buddhist Sangha who are either genuine Sinhala nationalists or pure and simple political operatives clad in robes.

Unravelling the Sangha

In Sri Lanka the saffron robe is not a refuge from worldly affairs. On the contrary, it is but an entrée to social advancement.

Once ordained they develop peculiar hobbies such as taming baby Elephants, feeding them with tamarind pods. Some die in the process!

These clerics are elites and their temples are manorial enclaves of great prestige. They radiate fearsome shadowy power over believers and followers.

They have their own definitions and values of social justice and human rights. (If Eknaligoda had LTTE links or Lasantha had links with foreign NGOs they forfeit their human rights)

They are manipulative maestros in defining proper behavior for themselves and their flock. They claim an inherent and natural prestige. They exert an unimaginable influence over a people held hostage to tradition and social norms. They are a pivotal breed of political players in Gotabaya’s great game.

The autocrat seduces them with patronage. They return the favour by legitimizing the autocracy. The intensity of their attachment to the teachings of the Buddha is propionate to the engine capacity of their limousines.

This writer is a practicing Buddhist now in his 75th year. My children are under strict instructions to avoid any saffron mumbo jumbo when I board the ferry. No need for dead weight!

The Dream Candidate

Gotabaya Rajapksa is the dream candidate of this cold and calculating class of the Sinhala Buddhist Sangha. They fast during day and feast at night. They celebrate celibacy with a sensual and venal élan.  Their Nirvana is perfected through centuries of politicking behind curtains since the time of our Kandyan kings.

Prince Siddhartha renounced once when he left his palace. Our soldier statesman will do better. He has once renounced his Sri Lankan citizenship. Now he has promised to renounce his US citizenship. That is a double whammy in the business of renunciation. It qualifies as an ‘avant-garde’ redemption!

The abyss that awaits

The last three years have demonstrated the futility of converting a patrimonial state in to a functional democracy. In the patrimonial state, the sources of power- status and wealth are concentrated in the state. The political class and the priestly class are in a symbiotic compact sharing the spoils.

Gotabaya has the capacity, the will and the skill to construct the perfect garrison state. In his ‘Brave New World ‘Aldous Huxley described the kind of state that Gotabaya will preside over. It will be an efficient totalitarian state.  It will be one ‘in which the all-powerful executive of political bosses and their army of managers control a population of slaves who do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude.’

Simply brilliant ! No writer has ever captured the devious and vicious character of Gota so well. Pity the Mahawamsa nurtured Sinhala Buddhist public is not in a mood to realize the Truth.

Most times when I read Sarath I think to myself ……..I can’t disagree with a word this man has written …………. he has a knack to get to the essence of a point he wants to make …….. concisely with the least number of well chosen words. ……… Strangely enough, a talent many American intellectuals/professors possess ……… but not the owners of the language the English! ………….. And as rare as hens’ teeth among the Lankans …….

“we are deprived of a supportive culture either capable or equipped to embrace human progress in this day and age. “

This has puzzled me ……..no end! ….. Why we are so incapable of embracing modernity ………..not the uneducated ……….but the “educated!”

“slaves who do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude.”

Brilliant! ………. Sartre’s put it ……… “In the absence of God man is CONDEMNED to be free. …….. And to many freedom is not a blessing ……. but something to be terrified of ……….

It happens even to the best thinkers ……… They say …….. after Kant freed the philosophers by destroying the concept of absolute-truth ……… except for Nietzsche, every other philosopher went back and created new prisons for themselves ………

        Sarath,

“I am too old to care.”

@uncomman man – You just pulled the words out of my mouth…..such a well articulated piece of literary excellence…I wish he writes more frequently. A majority of Sinhala Buddhists would whole heartedly agree with Sarath and be thankful for having been able to read their own thoughts so eloquently illustrated….thank you Sarath.

      Sarath,
“His ascendancy to power must be thwarted. Why? Because he is a vicious, vindictive, racist, control freak. “
That’s a pretty good CV of one Adolf Hitler. We have to remember that he too was elected ro power by a fawning populace.
It’s time to introduce an I.Q test for voters.

Gota is amonster. Rajapakse is a cheater and whole family are corrupted. Srilanka will be completely isolated if the Sinhalese bring back Mahinda.

      Billy,

“Dooms day scenario” as far as Gota goes seems inappropraite to you. Just remember the old wisdom “Fool me once, it is on you. Fool me twice, it is on me”.

Billy, Gota has receipts for his actions, he doesn’t have to prove anything. Clean Colombo roads, cycling paths, garbage colletion (nevermind it was dumped away and people died), maintaining law and order even if it means by the barrel of a gun.

Anyone else of his like will have to do and then prove he did it too.

      Could not agree more,
Sarath writes like we had a fascist rule that did not have any elections!
People were denied basic writes, We were living under a Stalinist state!
News papers did not publish anything against Rajapakses those days!

People in this country is fighting each other to share the limited resources available.
We need a leader who can create jobs, revive economy, provide stability!
We need to build more schools, Hospitals, Universities, Roads, Harbors air ports.
We need to develop agriculture to feed our people at a reasonable price!

Well we thought we can bring the yahapalana miracle with morons! The experiment has failed spectacularly. Excerment is all over the faces of Yahapalana nitwits!

Well, We all know that this coupe was not for the establishment of democracy!
It was to take away the powers that had with the majority of the country!
Conspiracy is to weaken the majority and establish the federal utopia that miraculously cure the diseases in the society!

If anyone think that Sinhalese give up the fight you’ve got another thing coming!

The viable alternative for the Sri Lanka is a strong leadership under Gotabhaya,
You are welcome to show us an alternative!

I would love to see Sri Lanka lead by a gentleman like Imthiaz Bakeer Marker!
But we all know it is not going to happen here. I hope at least he becomes the UNP leader! and UNP may balance it’s shift to the required left!

Until then, Economy first! Forward with Gota!

Would you please tell us how, when Gota was THE ARMY OFFICER IN CHARGE of the Matale area, 300 youth were killed and buried in a mass grave? Would you please tell us the sequence of events when GOTA AS THE DEFENCE SECRETARY took complete control of the inquiry, inclusive of the determination of the cause of death of these three hundred youth. Fonseka might be a “crazy maniac” in your book but how would you describe your hero, Gota, and his conduct?

Truth will succeed if not today tomorrow.

      I believe in Sarath Fonseka…

I consider him to be the most honest candidate in lanken politics. Gota or his abusive brother are the most abusive men on lanken soil. Latter was proved thousand times, but lanken media has no guts to do their unbiased job.
We criticise everyone, but leaving all the high criminals aside. Why ?

Thank you for your two cents worth (its certainly not worth anymore than that!) But you are pissing against the wind. Gota will come to power, like it or lump it. If you think you will not be able to live under a Gota presidency, immediately apply for a visa somewhere that might be interested in you (a 75 yr old babbler).

Not a O/L qualified who did join the Armed Forces using the preferential with Sirima B as SLFP supporters.

‘The record shows Gotabaya Rajapaksa to be less of a soldier and more of a manipulator. He left active service at the height of the war, migrated…’

A person serves in the army for more than 20 years, won gallantry awards for bravery from three presidents in the country and served in the front lines during the difficult stages of the war, retires after 20 years of service. Then he migrated to USA with family which most other Sri Lankans also do. Unlike rest of Sri Lankans he came back to SL and served as defence secretary in an exemplary manner and freed the country from brutal terrorism.
After doing that USA targets him because he ended terrorism here without listening to masters in Washington. USA targets him because he had balls to tell visiting British and French foreign ministers, that the only person who could call off the war is president of SL who is elected by the people and not some foreign minister of some western country. After doing an enormous service to the country, the people in that country who has NOT done even a fraction of what Gota did to SL question his patriotism! Can these people be more ungrateful than this? Can they become more pathetic?

It is perfectly fine to question what he would do in the event he is elected as the president. But it is extremely comical to question Gota’s patriotism and his service as an army man. When he accepted the responsibility as a defence secretary after the disastrous CBK and RW years, he did a lot too safeguard Sri Lanka. I am extremely thankful he retired early and went to USA because we got a better defence secratary in him. Had he served in the battle field and was killed in action, we would have missed his service. So his retirement has done wonders for SL.

“……USA targets him because he ended terrorism here without…”

This is a common Rajapaksa supporters about USA,.
Dont you know that USA did supply intelligence to sink 8 ships with heavy arms that was intersected and sunk by the SL Navy in deep Blue seas?

Why on earth USA need to supply this vital information for SL Intelligence if they wanted to drag the war? Does it make sense?

Also a country that is a failed state with per capita debt going nearly half a million SL Rupees., what USA is going to get from?

Gota is just a killer machine and the war was planned and execucted by Gen SF and other commanders.

Gota the psychopath did assassinate thousands of innocent people like Lasantha, Ekneligoda, Welikada Massacre., white flag killings and the list goes on and on.

        Ariyasena Gajanayake,

USA supplied the info of LTTE ships only after SLN had convinced them that LTTE might be running guns for Al Qaeda terrorists. They did that for their own precautions. Besides Western powers wanted to tame the LTTE and heed them to the demands of Westerners. They didn’t expect Mahinda to finish LTTE off. That is why Western countries tried till the end to rescue LTTE leadership from complete annihilation.

US wants the strategics ports Mr. Gajanayake. The poorer the country the better the prospects for them. It is sad really that there are still imbeciles like you who don’t see the danger hanging over our heads.

For your information Mr. Gajanayake, the war wasn’t planned by Gen SF. It was planned by the national security council which was headed by then President Mr. Rajapaksha. Fonny was just a cog in the grand scheme of things. Don’t give him what is not due.

      Sach,

One of the best comments I have read in CT if not the best one. I also believes that Gota’s time in the State had made him the excellent manager we have seen during the MR’s time. If he stayed in Sri Lanka he would have become another paranoid Sinhala Buddhist who goes after “Dewale” every time he faced with a problem. I sincerely believe that Gota could introduce good American values and ideals to our society as a whole.

Lets look at what GR did during his time?
After end of war SL had to provide food, medicine and welfare for 300000+ Tamil refugees while screening out LTTE members among them and securing Sri Lanka’s defence. Western governments, NGOs were waiting until localized violence started in parts of Sri Lanka by remaining LTTE cadres. Gota did not allow it. Gota did not allow LTTE violence to emerge again which is a big achievement for a country that faced 30 years of suicide terrorism. Not only that, within few years most of the Tamil civilians who became refugees were resettled in their villages. That is not a simple task.

Everything needs money. The RECONCILIATION SALES MEN, Norway and USA did everything to stop Sri Lanka getting funds at her moment of need. Hilary went out of the way to make sure Sri Lanka does not get the IMF loan. At that time economy was in tatters. But Rajapaksas prevailed and made sure SL get out of economic problems. This is the Rajapaksas. Compare it with the current paralyzed government.

    • 0
      0

      Sach
SL got out of economic problems not because Rajapaksas handled the economy in good manner but thanks to China’s unrestricted flow of massive loans. MR had a good rapport with China. But his government’s ignorance to generate short term development projects to make massive repayments paved the way for an accumulated unbearable debt mountain on Sri Lanka. Projects were created purely to spend the loans. Even in future Gotabhaya will continue to take loans to show that country is doing good. We had enough of this. We have seen this for 7 decades. There is no point of continuing it.
About providing food to Tamil refugees, the then government made a request to donate food parcels as it was a huge burden to the government to provide 3 meals at the beginning. Many hotels in Colombo and suburbs and other people provided food parcels and they were taken to North by air. The war was won due to dedication, commitment and sacrifices made by the youth and their parents in villages. Everybody talks about Gotabhaya but nobody talks about their contribution to protect the country. Without them Gotabhaya wouldn’t have enough soldiers to win the war.
There is no question about his commitment to end the war and reconciliation efforts aftermath of the war. That is why people elected Mahinda in 2010 for another term with a massive majority. Anyways, the absolute power saw a totally different side of Rajapaksas in their second term. Unlike 2005-2009, as it transpired now, they have ruled the country through fear abusing their power. They didn’t tolerate dissent. They still don’t do. They suppressed my voice in LCN through intimidation. During 2010-2015, there was a small circle around Mahinda including his siblings who took the reins from his hands and ruled the country.

      Sach — Contd’ ….
According to your own narrative about what Gotabhaya did in the North, there is no way Mahinda losing votes in the North after all his development work there. Who allowed NGOO and other civil groups to register Tamil voters in the North at their whims and fancies? I dare say there was underhand game to make Mahinda lose by his own camp and Gotabhaya was fully aware of it. Both Gotabhaya and Basil had future presidential hopes. Mahinda’s existence in politics was the only impediment for their dream. When Mahinda was the Executive President, Gotabhaya was the powerful Defence Secretary and Basil was the all powerful Economic Affairs Minister, there is no way Mahinda’s nemesis camp win in January 2015 without the backing of Gotabhaya and Basil. There is no guarantee that Gotabhaya will appoint Mahinda as the PM if he wins. Why should Mahinda take the same risk again? Country doesn’t need his siblings and people are not under obligation to bring them back to power even in Mahinda’s name. People will look after Mahinda as long as he wants to be in politics with due respect and honour he fully deserves.

Machan Sarath, Gota has done a lot to uplift the lives of minority in Sri Lanka. His only blunder was tolerance of islamophobes. He simply attended an event in temple and NGO brigade in SL painted him black. Today your yahapalana president has taken Gnanasara to Japan and they are dead silent.
Releasing lands to Tamils, taking action to uplift the Tamil language education in SL were done by this Rajapaksa whom you try to show as a devil.

I am amazed at your vivid description of Gotabhaya’s commitment towards uplifting the lives of minority in addition to releasing lands to Tamils and reviving Tamil language education in Sri Lanka. If what you say is true, give me one good reason as to why Mahinda lost Tamil votes in the North in 2015? Was it because Gotabhaya diverted those minority votes to Maithree? I am just asking.

        Champa,

Are you this naive? Tamil’s separatist ideologies have not been completely eradicated from their minds. Mahinda and Gota believed that physical development would make the Tamils see the light. They got it all wrong there. Without wiping out their separatist mindset they will not vote for a true patriotic President of Sri Lanka. Both in 2010 and 2015 their vile politicians had promised them a separate state by voting for candidate they selected. Tamils voted in block for that reason. They want nothing more than a seperate state.

You admit that Gotabhaya was failed in removing separatist ideology. How could he do it now when they had time since 2009 to that but didn’t do it? After vanquishing LTTE the most simple thing to do to remove separatism ideology was abolishing Provincial Councils. They didn’t have the backbone to do that Will he do it if he becomes the President? Of course not.

Beautifully written piece. I am not despondent. Do not board the ferry just yet. There is a fight to be had. I, Mama Sinhalam, do not believe that the Sinhala people will get sucked into this for long. Sixty years they have been fed the same trash; they are poorer than before, mired in ignorance while their fat cats send their children off to England while feeding their children the Mahavamsa shit. I think the young Sinhalams are wise to all this. To become President, Got a Baya, the war criminal, must get more that 70% of the Sinhala votes. This cannot happen. With no Tamil and no Muslim vote, Got a Baya stands little chance. Don’t board the ferry. Rage, Rage against injustice and stupidity. You have work to do old man, Sarath. I and many others are there with you.

      M.S.
Sure ALL the minorities banded together with minority of majority will outnumber the majority of majority. This formula to contain the majority of majority is the recipe for disaster. That is the very opposite of ethnic harmony , peacefull coexistence and stable government. Try to work towards majority (as against ALL) of minority AND majority of majority if you ever wish to see progress. The propaganda strategy of UNP elite that majority of Sinhala Buddhists are viciously anti minority in order to secure ALL the minority votes is deadly poison. It is the glue that cements racial/religious division. That is a devilish formula to keep us permanently devided. Think again.

Bilious frothing billy boy,you are absolutely right. After all when Hitler came out with his own theory of evolution, he was never alone, he was not single handed fighting a war. He was so so vicious but was charismatic to brain wash a whole nation in believing his delusions.Rest is history. Millions of people died, Many more suffered by torture, rape and displacement. And generations after some are still going through the pain, loss, grief and PTSD. Hitler not only had his own people to do the killing (some of them still wanted and haunted) He was able convince few other countries in cooperating with his mission. I am sure even today there may be few people who stand by him and preach the same, Does it sound familiar to you.I guess history keeps repeating.

Another thing, after end of war Sri Lankan forces could trace 13000 LTTE cadres. What did Gota do? Kill them or incarcerate them? If they wanted they could have simply imprison them. Instead they rehabilitated 13000+ LTTE cadres, teach them livelihood methods, married them off and allowed them to have a normal life. The former LTTE cadres have received TOO MUCH sympathy from Sri Lankan state and Gota. What would USA or anything western country do if they faced such a situation? Would not they have made their lives a hell?

      Sach
You are giving more and more proof that Mahinda’s loss in 2015 was an inside job.
Look, if what you say is true about Gotabhaya’s sympathy to LTTE cadre (you have completely omitted any mention of Mahinda’s good heart), how come Mahinda received:
      1. only 41,631 in Batticaloa while Maithree got 209,422 votes?
      2. only 74,454 in Jaffna while Maithree got 253,574?
      3. only 52,111 in Trincomalee while Maithree got 140,338?
      4. only 34,377 in Vanni while Maithree got 141,417?
If Gotabhaya had done that much to Tamils, I am sure they were grateful to him right. If so, they should vote in favour of Mahinda, right? How did unknown Mairthree who did nothing to Tamils receive such a huge number of votes, 3 – 5 times more votes than Mahinda? I think your hero has diverted those votes to his preference.

your figures show that 200000 tamils in a war torn region whose dreams of separation was crushed with a heavy hand and severe casualties, still voted for mahinda even with the TNA telling them not to.These 200000 easily will absorb the 13000 LTTE cadres and their friends and relatives even at 10 is to one cadre and have an excess of 70000.I belive these votes were for mahinda pouring money into these areas for infrastucture and facilities for ordinary folk.He could have got much more if not for the heavy handedness of the paranoid gota who for example forced people to even get army approval for a birthday party.Gota was the main reason why mahinda lost votes of the tamils with the way he conducted the last part of the war with traditional ruthlessness as with JVP uprising and also after the war was over treating the people like they were a conquered race and humiliating them unnecessarily.his expertise was in miltary matters only and mahinda should have told him he has 40 years experience in politics and kept him at arms length whre politics is concerned.mahinda’s grave mistake.

Comment is free but facts are sacred, as you know, Sarath– and the fact is that the Supreme Court has established the time-line which ain’t 2020 but late 2019, i.e. next year.

      Dr.DJ,
Indeed late 2019. Good luck to you with the Gauleiters . Cut all the flowers. No fear. Spring will come. By the way I too enjoyed that piece on Mervyn by his contemporary.

“Comment is free but facts are sacred,”

Did you come up with this phrase/quote?

Also this is bit rich coming from a humbug, hypocrite, war monger, war crime denier, a plagiarizer ……………… a shameless typist, ………

In case if you have deliberately forgotten the author of the quote it was the great liberal C. P. Scott who first coined the phrase.

Please stop plagiarizing from great authors/writers.

Dear Sarath: I stand on salute to you for the courage displayed in the brief penned under the sub heading “Unravelling the Sanga”; but not without praise of what you revealed of “GOTA”. Very recently, another “High Priest” who works so closely with the President and in fact who worked tirelessly to bring him to power, named the President as a “Patholaya (snake gourd) of .50 cents worth” at a media briefing. I hope from now onward the farmers will not give up planting “Pathola” (snake gourd) for our consumption. As a matter of fact, even another “High Priest” who headed a “HIGH SEAT” in a learning institution of the country failed to direct his eye of METTA – (compassion ) to the elephant CHAINED to a tree in the compound of the temple when feeding it with tamarind pods. Some who are sitting at the very HIGHEST LEVELS do not even get out of their “Palaces” to part with a meal offered (dane) by a poor villager, even though they very well know how Gauthama Buddha accepted a meal from a lowly poor villager while on his daily routine of begging. Why do they do that and live that way? The answer: The CROOKED and CRAFTY politicians of all shades and color have very skillfully made use of and nourish them to ascend to power. Alas, will we have another BUDDAHA for ever?

I think your fear is unnecessary. At the moment, Gotabhaya seems to be the only person contesting for Presidency. Your article is based on fear factor. “When you succumb to fear, you are under the illusion that you can predict the future.” Therefore, chances are high it will not happen. Who knows, he might not be the only contender.
On the other hand, your suggestion to abolish executive presidency is foolhardy. Who wants to rely on a corrupt Parliament where Parliamentarians are sold for money and positions? We are not going there. There is still time, about one and a half year for any new people to throw their hats into the ring. I am not someone who support the chicken-hearted slave government. But Gotabhaya is not the solution. We love Mahinda, but nobody wants 2010-2015 era where Gotabhaya and Basil ruled the country again. The next President is not a Rajapaksa. 100% guranteed.

The Section “Unravelling the Sangha ” is so true.
The Sangha is the downfall of Sri Lanka

  • 8
    3

If he gets into power, Gota first instant, he would get ride off the Sangha. He would use them only to ride to power. All could remember well, when Field Marshal Fonseka was jailed, the Sangha wanted to come on streets, what he said that they would bomb them. After that all fizzled out. Hence, the Sangha should keep it up most in their minds for he is a unrestrainable monster, and a blood thirty maniac, the entire nation would fall into a huge pit, plus the world would intern show a blind eye to the nation.

Good one. Gotabhya will do the same to Mahinda. He will use Mahinda and his voters to become the President and then he will force Mahinda to retire making everybody helpless.

Thank you Sarath for exposing who the Real GoTa Rajapaksa is:

“The record shows Gotabaya Rajapaksa to be less of a soldier and more of a manipulator. He left active service at the height of the war, migrated, renounced his nationality and never set foot on the land of his birth until the brother contested the presidency”.

GoTa abandoned the Ealam war at its height and ran to US as a refugee. Without any proper education or qualifications, he could not find any good job and ended up working as a Gas Station Assistant in the US. Once he ducked his head when he saw me pulling over my car to this gas station. I was flabbergasted when I heard he was appointed as Defence Head of our country. Gota has thousands of human skeletons in his cupboards – a collection from Matale Mass Grave through Rathupussala, Colombo, to Kilinochchi. Even a dream of this known killer becoming the president in Sri Lanka is so scary and beyond any comprehension. GoTa is a corrupted man, a known kille and a proven, fraudster as shown in MIG deal, arms procurement, and Avant Garde

You are an absent minded scholar or dis carded lunatic. You can have all your anlysis and theories. But you can keep it your self as the ordinary people will not have the time and knowledge to sum up what you say rather they will decide on the common sense approach which you do not have.
You do not worth even as a dust to the ordinary man. The immense contribution what Gotabhaya has done for the entire nation worth making him the President of our country to take our country beyond Asian mentality.
Please stop barking When Gota become you can wag the tail!
Mr Sarath De Alwis For us you are useless!!!

Once more a superb, witty, biting piece from Sarath de Alwis proving in him, Tisaranee and a very few others we still have quality writers in this declining land – able to convey their intelligent thoughts in elegant English prose. The suspect wisdom and politics of the 1956 disaster of Sinhala Only has destroyed the earlier quality of English which the Sinhala Buddhists, Christians, Tamils from both sides, the Burghers, Muslims and others produced in regular numbers. India, on the other hand, travelled in the opposite direction despite some fake narrow and nationalist politics there as well. Some of the best English writers and journalists come from the vast country presently.

As Brian Senanayake noted, the Medamulana Rajapakses are a clan of ill-educated virtual highway robbers and village thugs. To quote Carl Jung nothing straight can come out of the Rajapakse timber in terms of honesty and good governance. Sri Lanka is fated to suffer increasingly in the coming years. Many Sinhalese dreamed to send the minorities to the Cleaners. They now have the carcass of a cadavar for company.

“The record shows Gotabaya Rajapaksa to be less of a soldier and more of a manipulator.”

No, the manipulator is Mahinda. Gothabaya is a brilliant general. He transformed the Forces so that decades of military losses (Elephant Pass, Kilinochi, etc.) were reversed in weeks or months. Mahinda used his political clout to convince allies (USA, India, etc.) to covertly support the war effort.

“Gothabaya is a brilliant general. “

Well how did you manage to come to this conclusion about the national slaughterer? He was mostly in hiding or slaughtering his own innocent people when Hindians invaded/occupied this island. Then he was missing for 13 years. Then came back when his brother was appointed Prime Minister.

By the time he was appointed Defense secretary Hindians had already submitted a plan to Chandrika to find a FINAL SOLUTION for LTTE. It was coincidence he was in the right place at the right time. It was also bad time for the people.

I don’t understand why he didn’t fight the invading Hindians?

Everything is fine…. witty… superb… so on and so forth.
Everyone thought the decline of SL will be halted with Sirisena-Ranil turning tables on the Rajapakshes in 2015………. Hopes and assumption went sky high and so were the expectations of the masses of their capabilities………Speculation unimaginable…

Alas ! in 40 days the central Bank was looted. After a Year thereon drained from the EPF.
Promises, 1m jobs… the Volkswagen factory, the tyre factory tuned out to be all false promises.

Emmergence of Gota…. now bring another kind of speculation…. Fear..
YES. AS THINGS STAND TODAY, THE “FEAR” WILL BE BETTER FOR THE PROGRESS OF THE COUNTRY.
Be it FEAR, whether it is the minority or the majority, what is required is progress. Masses need to get a life…………. even with fear than to watch the Yahapalanaya looters aimlessly floating.

Chris.P Bacon, you get back to where you come from as there is turmoil there.
As for Brian Senanayake, he bolted with an excuse after the illfated Royal Old crock debacle.
As of now, something crooked is good enough if it come out of Rajapakshe timber as nothing at all comes out of the Yahapalanaya Timber.

UNWITTINGLY I SAY, GOTA CAN & WILL BE ABLE TO COUNT ON THE MINORITY VOTE.

      Thonda

When Mugabe secured the reins his thoughts were sublime – for the
majority people of Zimbabwe. But in the Actonian wisdom power in Z
corrupted and, as decades passed, absolute power corrupted absolutely. As to the Rajapakses, once firmly in the saddle, they lost their balance. Mahinda cared little for the convenience and comfort of the people around Independence Square. What mattered was the thrill and happiness for his three twisted sons. Other people in the area, Mahinda may have figured, matter little. As to Gota, he brought down many expensive walls in that exclusive area – to advance his own “favoured vision” of beautifying the Capital city. In Rumania long time dictator Ceausescu thought along similar lines until, one fine day, the captive citizenry – now released – executed him in the streets with much glee.

Politics is a strange game. Political power – still stranger and unpredictable is the lesson that must penetrate, if that is possible, the thick Rajapakse skulls.

Having experienced RW and MS governance (or lack of it) why not Gota?

      Are we blaming him for:
his contribution towards the anti LTTE strategy
motivating troops when they were demoralized by RW and Chandrika
after winning the war embarking on a rapid infrastructure development including beautification of Colombo

Yes, he will be a firm decisive leader. Isn’t that the need of the hour?

He is a rare talent. He is a strategist who can also implement and direct.

    Sarath De Alwis,

So do you prefer the man behind ‘Black July’; man who tortured and killed hundreds of youths aka Batalanda Wadakaya; man who masterminded the ‘Bond Scam’; man who handed over one third of the country on a platter to Prabhakaran; man who lost 29 elections; man who is behaving like Robert Mugabe in Sri Lanka; man who worship ‘Para Suddas’; man who ruined the economy of the country during the last three years; man who brought Arjun Mahendran who looted the Central Bank and allowed him to escape. The list can go on!

I think, Sarath DeAlwis has got wrong information. Penthouse Ravi has told that If GOta goes to jail Ranil also will go to jail. Because of some reason gota does not want to contest PResidential elelction.
