The Tamil & Muslim Parties & The No-Confidence Motion

By Dayan Jayatilleka –

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

It is not in the interests of the TNA and the other parties of the Tamil and Muslim minorities to be associated with an unpopular PM, on an indefensible issue. It is also not in the interests of ethnic and ethno-religious reconciliation that the minority parties be so precariously positioned.

When an impeachment motion was brought against President Premadasa he obtained the support of the minorities but he also had the support of a larger slice of the majority, including the Buddhist clergy and the poorer classes. Furthermore, the economy had revived and he was popular due to his welfare measures. President Premadasa also had a credible progressive narrative in his own defence and with it, he occupied the moral high ground (“this is a class struggle”).

I should know, as I was one of the most prominent public defenders of President Premadasa during the impeachment crisis—something for which I almost paid with my life when attacked by a lynch mob at Kanatte on August 10th 1992 at the funeral of Gen Kobbekaduwa. I felt  I was defending a noble cause—that of protecting Sri Lanka’s equivalent of a Salvador Allende, Mohammed Mossadegh or Patrice Lumumba, from a pro-Western, rightwing conspiracy. I did not have to defend President Premadasa from the charge of bringing in a Fat Cat friend from a foreign country, installing him on the strategic heights of the economy and turning a blind eye (to put it charitably) while he ripped-off the country and thereby saddled the people with a huge financial burden!

So, the context during the anti-Premadasa impeachment was as different as it could be from today’s situation of the anti-Ranil no-confidence motion. The minority parties should not get on the wrong side of this one, defending a leader who, as the results of the local authorities’ election proved, cannot carry the majority of the majority.

If the Tamil and Muslim parties support the PM on April 4th, they would not only be taking a stand in support of someone who is not supported by the majority of the majority, they would be committing at least three more serious blunders. They would be standing on the opposite side of the SLFP, a moderate Sinhala party which is a significant partner of the coalition government, and which, if it goes into opposition, would be a no less significant component of it.

If the minority parties vote with Ranil they would risk taking a stand which is not that of the Executive President.

They would also be supporting the status quo in the UNP, which would not be welcomed by the dissidents/potential successors in the UNP who are waiting to take over and most probably will, sooner rather than later.

If they back Ranil, the minority parties would of course be at variance with the JO led by Mahinda Rajapaksa, which is the largest single political force in the country and the only one that is on the ascendancy.

By supporting Ranil the minority parties would stand in anger of confirming one of the longest standing tenets of Sinhala majoritarian populism, which the late Regi Siriwardena correctly called “ethno-populism”.   That ideological tenet is that the minorities “always support the pro-Western reactionaries and never the cause of the progressive masses”. Though this is not strictly true in an empirical sense, i.e. it is not strictly factual, it is also true that Tamil leftists like N. Sanmugathasan always accused the Federal Party and the Tamil Congress of failing to support any progressive legislation and consistently opposing such steps—his favorite example being Philip Gunawardena’s Paddy Lands Act of 1958.

It these wrong optics, of the minority parties supporting the UNP which itself is a minority party in the sense that it supports the “haves” rather than the “have-nots”, that adds a powerful populist charge to majoritarian ethno-nationalism.

Under two years away from national elections, such a rekindled perception would only impact upon the policy agenda of the incoming populist government, as the Tamil parties’ support for the UNP in 1965-1970, provoked the then Opposition into a chauvinist response which impacted on the policy agenda of the 1970 government. That agenda included the 1972 Constitution which removed safeguards for the minorities, and the ghastly discriminatory policy of District-wise and media-wise standardization of marks for university entrance.

The Tamil and Muslim parties would do well to understand that the country is in a transition, away from the mood and arrangement of January 8th 2015. The Tamil leaders thought that January 8th 2015 was irreversible—indeed the most distinguished of them told me this later that year. Even more so, the external (mainly but not exclusively) Western patrons if not architects of this regime change thought it was irreversible. That has proved delusional and was predictably so. The President is seeking to preserve some aspect of the 2015 change by effecting triage and surgically excising the most gangrenous of the Greens. If the PM fails to resign by April 4th, then a more wide-ranging re-composition of the 2015 outcome will be sought through the vote.   Which side of this effort do the minority parties wish to be seen on?

If the painless change of April 4th fails then there will be a rupture, with the SLFP or a significant part of it going into the opposition with its votes. In any case the SLFP’s residual 13% vote will shift to the JO-Pohottuwa, with or without the SLFP MPs.

Do the minority parties wish to stay on board a sinking ship?  Or do they wish to be part of the transition and the incoming dispensation of 2019-2020? What they do now will not only influence their shareholding in the emergent political order, but much more crucially, will help shape the political and social ideology as well as the policy agenda of the incoming government.

Is it at all prudent to be on the wrong side of this inevitable transition, which is either imminent or visible on the horizon?

The Tamil and Muslim parties tried it the other way around in 2015, namely, throwing the combined weight of the minorities behind a bloc that won a minority of the votes of the majority. That experiment — the majority of the minorities plus the minority of majority– is coming apart at the seams.  Isn’t it manifestly in the enlightened self-interest of the minority parties to try the other option, namely to invest politically in a bloc that can carry the majority of the majority? Imagine how quickly the 13th amendment could have been implemented and built upon, had the TNA allied with Mahinda Rajapaksa in his second term!

What the minority parties, Tamil and Muslim, should perhaps do now is to ask themselves what their most successful leaders like S. Thondaman would have done. I recall what the great Mr. Thondaman told my father at our regular dinner at his residence in the flats near Royal College. When my father asked him to sum up the secret of his political success, he strangely replied: “are you enjoying your thosai?”  My father, puzzled, replied that it was excellent. Mr. Thondaman then pointed to the woman who was making the thosai, and said “just watch how she does it—the secret is her wristwork; she flips it over at exactly the right moment.” Then he paused and said with a cryptic smile: “that is the secret of my political success. I know exactly at which moment to turn the thosai”.

It is time for the Tamil and Muslim parties to pivot. But will they instead conform to the reputation that the liberal Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban gave the Palestinians, more than a little unfairly—that “they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity”?

It is in the interest of the people and the unity of the country Tamils and Muslims should not support the no confidence motion brought by cruel, undemocratic, racist, opportunistic criminals. We need to save the 6.2 million voters who voted against the brutal dictator. No more blood should shed in this land.

        Dr. DJ,
You proclaim :”I did not have to defend President Premadasa from the charge of bringing in a Fat Cat friend from a foreign country, installing him on the strategic heights of the economy and turning a blind eye (to put it charitably) while he ripped-off the country and thereby saddled the people with a huge financial burden! “
Is it not a fact that in the final analysis, the government borrowed 10 billion rupees to be paid back over 30 years? How is this a “huge financial burden” even compared to the 18 billion loss in ONE year (2014) by Sri Lankan Airlines?
Please do explain to us poor dimwitted plebs without foreign degrees.

Whether Ranil win or lose the no confidence vote, the biggest loser will be Sirisena who will have nowhere to go after the motion is taken. Sirisena who came to power on UNP and minority vote will be the first elected ‘one term’ president of Sri Lanka and the worst president the country ever had.

From the day one on, Prez Sirisena has been not HONEST to the nation.

Chasing out Ranil is far difficult than Defeating LTTe. Are you saying CIABOC – supremem court judgrsare not trust worthy ?. why Maithripala Sirisena mad PCOLI report a confidential document and is not releasing. Why Ranil gave a clarification and not faced questioning for an investigation. It is all high drama. until the next elelction. Ranil was caught in his own net. Now struggling to stay alive.

Because, Mahinda Rajapakse is there to catch power and not for the country.Ranil tried to out smart Mahinda Rajapakse and lost. Maithripala sirisena is in the middle of this drama. Ranil and Mahinda Rajapakse are one and the same

Why did the Vellala Party leader Mr Sambanadan tell the ex President Rajapaksa to get lost, when the latter invited Sambandan to do a Deal based on 13?.
    Valid point Dayan.
    Here are the reasons.
Sambandan had separate deals even then, with Dr Ranil, and Suren Surendran, all backed by the NGOs and Western Embassies in Colombo.
Aim of the deal are as follows.
    * Roll Rajapaksa and get Dr Ranil into power.
    * Hand over the War Veterans and War Heroes to the UN to be tried in International Courts to dish out punishment for killing Pirahaparan.
    * Jail Rajapaksas on trumped up corruption charges.
    * Divide the Country and give Vellala the Homeland in a combined North East.
Sillysena was then hired by the West to join the Dr Ranil , Sambandan, Surendran coalition.
Silly thought he can hoodwink the Sinhala majority by distributing the Crumbs from the LTTE kitty, the 4 Billion Mangi got as a promissory note from Surendran , and the hand outs from the West.
But then Dr Ranil’s starving mates F****d it up big time by scrambling to collect what ever they can get their hands, on as soon as the doors open to the Ministries..
And Sambandan appointed Vellala ex Judge started bragging about building Statutes of Pirahaparan even before he got the keys to a Homeland.
Now it is like a Malay Pickle with the Muslims who joined Dr Ranil are reaping most along side the UNP crooks .
Plus Muslims are also eying a separate Homeland.

The power is in Muslim hands. TNA is blind. They always support UNP. TNA support can be taken for granted. But Muslims are different. SLMC and ACMC hold the Aces. They decide who goes and who stays. SLMC and ACMC must use this power to bring justice to discriminated and neglected Muslims. Ranil is besieged. Demand the maximum from him for Muslims. Then support him. If not, vote against him. Colombo mayor-ship must transfer to a Muslim for the simple and fair reason that Colombo City has a Muslim majority.

SLMC and ACMC must use their commanding position. Otherwise don’t face Muslim voters.

    • 9
      3

First of all TNA is not blind, they are helpless. They have been told by India/USA/west to support this government in order to get the rights of Tamils. Now nothing seems to be happening in reconciliation or restorative justice. TNA has no choice other than to support Ranil, as their backers want them to do so. It is the Muslim parties that are blind, in order to safeguard their positions and perks, by supporting all actions of the state without considering whether it will be detrimental to Muslims or not. How can you say that power is in Muslim hands when Rishard Badurdeen who vociferously challenged Sinhalese, has gone into silence by the mere verbal threat of Gnanasara.

        Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam,

Finallly the truth has come out. Tamils helped Ranil so they can get what they want. While you people preaching “bana” to Sinhalese about how to reconciliate, you people have secretly worked to devide the community. Now who are the rasicts?

Tamils always helped Sinhalese. You know the public racist Aryan Anagarika Homeless Dharmapala urged Sinhalese to seek help from Tamil Pon Ramanathan to save some Sinhala/Buddhist bums from gallows/hanging.

VP helped Premadasa to get rid of Hindian IPKF reclaiming sovereignty again, Dr Mahinda to win elections (2005), win war 2009, and win elections again in 2010, make/steal loads of money, ……

Don’t forget Tamils voted for the other public racist Field Marshall Fonseka in 2010.

          What exactly is your problem?

            Native Veddha,

Pon Ramanathan does not represent entire Tamil.community. He was just a lawyer. That is why his service was seeked.

What did VP do to get rid of IPKF? VP was hiding in Wanni when Premadasa sent IPKF home.

Tamils vote even the devil if West say he will help them attain their goals. What good should come out from a community like that?

              September 13, 2014
              island.lk
              by Mala Hewavitarne Weerasekera

“First, let us consider the period in which the Anagarika emerged as a Stalwart and Nationalist. It was the time of the Marshal Law. A. E. Goonesingha comments on Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan’s speech in the Legislative Assembly in 1915. “He stood like a colossus alone in the Legislative Council and vindicated the honour and dignity of the Sinhalese Nation. He spoke with tears in his eyes. He described the brutality committed by English Men with impunity under the name of British Justice. He said it was not justice but downright murder by the ruling race and it was an act of misgovernment for the ruling race to ignore all these atrocities.”

They were very harsh times of colonial rule. It is evident that Anagarika himself held Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan in very high esteem. He says “The day you are taken away from Ceylon, from that day there will be no one to defend the poor, neglected Sinhalese. They are a doomed people with no one to guide and protect them.” These were his comments after listening to his speech at the Legislative Assembly of 1915 (according to Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan’s memorial lecture in 1994 delivered by Hon. Lakshman Kadirgarmar, Minister of Foreign Affairs) naming Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan as a guide and protector of the Sinhalese people, which further confirms his nonracial mind-set.

Senali, for Tamils both UNP and SLFP are evils who have committed atrocities both by legislative means and by unleashing violence. Though both oppose each other openly, when it comes to anti-Tamil activities both work hand in glove. Tamil people have no choice between both but as a lesser evil they had been supporting UNP. Only in the 1994 Presidential elections, Tamils overwhelmingly supported Chandrika who was SLFP candidate. It is for the Tamils to decide what to do at the NCM against RW. In what way their action going to divide Sinhala community who are already divided on political lines. Look at the behaviour of SLFP and JO members with virulent anti-Tamil stance. Do you think any Tamil with iota of intelligence or self respect will vote for them or their manoeuvres. It is people like you who are outright racists who do not want justice meted out to Tamils despite being requested by international community to do so. Mark my words, very soon there will be intervention from outside to settle the issue.

What did Nadu people in SL get from Singhalese for the past 70 years? What did they get from Ranil for the past 3 years? Even after losing 140,000 Tamils to war, nothing. Muslim leaders are smarter. We got a Chief Minister without asking or dying for it. We got our banking system and legal system without violence. We have our ministries and power whatever party comes to power. Tamil leaders still go after Singhala politicians hoping against hope they will drop some scuff from the dinner table.

The public racist often forgets facts.

“When an impeachment motion was brought against President Premadasa he obtained the support of the minorities but he also had the support of a larger slice of the majority, including the Buddhist clergy and the poorer classes. “

The fact of the matter is Premadasa through his intermediaries approached LTTE and sought its support in the parliament against impeachment. LTTE had 13 MPs under its boots. The combined effort of Dutta Gamani and Dirty Bomber Athulathmudali didn’t succeed.
Three vehicles seen escorting Speaker M. H. Mohamed’s official motor vehicles, one in the front one in the right side, one in the rear, as if speakers car was boxed on all three sides.

It was only an impeachment by the parliament and it didn’t involve elections. Neither Buddhist clergy nor the poorer classes participated in the impeachment process.

Whats the matter with you? Gone complete ga ga?

I do not generally agree with Dayan’s views because his views in the past in relation to Tamils and Tamil politics have always been racially biased.

However, I agree with his statement that Federal Party (which now controls TNA) and Tamil Congress had always supported UNP and that these two main Tamil parties had always been pro-Western.

Sumanthiran who is the sole decision maker of TNA is in the pockets of Ranil and the Americans. Because of Sumanthiran, TNA is certainly going to vote against the NCM and help Ranil survive. Regrettably, TNA will not get anything in return from Ranil or UNP but will only earn the wrath of Mahinda group and the Sinhalese.

TNA lost a lot of support among the Tamils at the last local government elections because they failed to deliver on their previous election promises. I will not be surprised if TNA is completely voted out at the next round of provincial council and parliamentary elections. Sumanthiran is the man who is destroying TNA.

Here is what I wrote under
“UNHRC Cannot Rely On Sri Lanka To Prosecute Its Armed Forces”
Now tell me where have I admitted to being a Necrophilia?
Aren’t you the only one who got sacked for being so stupid and unsuitable for spit polish goliah job? Stupid women sniffer you don’t lick and polish your boss’ boots, spit and then polish with brush and then clothe.

Retarded ………….. women sniffing shameless Perera

We may have a lot of sympathy for you however it does not make you a handsome fantasist. However much you scream, shout, kick yourself in your back, bang your head on the wall, …………. twist your fingers, ………… the fact remains you are a little Walter Mitty character who “indulges in fantastic daydreams of personal triumphs”.

Do you also fantasize having sexual intercourse with dead bodies both men and women? If you do please it means you are suffering from Necrophilia. Please seek treatment.

tamil people are happy with the decisions taken by the TNA despite whatever that is written by people residing in Colombo

the way the councils were formed in NE speak volumes of their professionalism

now the bugger compares himself to lumumba and allende omg
it is time he is once again given the kanatte treatment
the minorities will join the govt in power when the need arises so there is no need for them to worry about voting for ranil rather than financial crooks and murderers

When Dayan was SL’s Permanent Representative at the UN in Geneva from 2007, he was ingloriously transferred to Colombo in August 2009 without being told why by the Foreign Ministry. Although he was made Ambassador to France from 2011 to 2013, that was little compensation and no one can blame him for being unhappy with MR.

He tried very hard to switch sides after the change of Govt. in 2015, but Ranil would not have him under any circumstances. So, for him, MR is the better of the two Evils. No wonder he is trying so hard to see the end of Ranil and the re-emergence of MR in Power.

If the NCM is so important, will Dyan please explain why MR chose to be out of the country when NCM is going to be voted on the 4th, particularly where it could be a close call where every single vote could make a difference?

      Muhandiram

    Dear Dr. Dayan,
The primary problem between JO and Tamils+Muslims is, almost all the front-line leaders of JO are seen by them as they represent the interest of Sinhala Buddhist than “Sri Lankans” interest. It was true that Tamils during LTTE time wanted to be recognized as “TAMILS”. But the attitude largely changed after LTTE’s defeat and majority of them want to be recognized as “Sri Lankans”. Muslims’ expectation was always be recognized as “Sri Lankans”. But After winning LTTE, while Tamils want to be “Sri Lankans” , your JO leaders want to see them as “TAMILS”. Unless the people you’re trying hard to bring back to power change their attitude and openly and frankly order their supporters to abandon hate against Tamils & Muslims, how can you expect them to trust JO leaders? Thank you.

Dayan, That dressing down you got literally in Kanatte where you had to run practically naked sans your underwear was organised I believe due to your double standards and for being an impostor. You are still that same impostor- you are just a Rajapakse stooge and not a journalist that you are pretending to be. Regarding Premadasa, except his dedication to build houses for the poor, everyone knows that he had no other vision. Why not start chronicling all the murders and swindling done by your pet Rajapakse including themal power stations, uma oya etc. If you suffering from insomnia there are plenty of tablets to take rather than trying to write garbage to spend your time. Who will listen to Dayan a Bodhilima [Katussa] like man changing colours [Premadasa SLFP EPRLF and SLPP] all the time. On the 5th night he will have to run minus his pants like what happened at Lalith Ahulathmudali’s funeral at Kanatta.

“something for which I almost paid with my life when attacked by a lynch mob at Kanatte on August 10th 1992 at the funeral of Gen Kobbekaduwa. I felt I was defending a noble cause”

A man, who has been for life time on his masters’ slavery for defending the master’s nefariousness, is on the cause of defending a good cause too? For every sip of the wine he takes on his evening parties, prays one time the Lord to save him from the hands of Old Brother Prince is talking of defending? From what? He has not written a different story, but only singing his masters’ pride, by fear. What a twist. Even GLP may have written better beavery farcical.
Has he the certificate of having defended any silly JVP girls or have fought in the north front, where lords of rebel girls’ corpse were being transported, on the rapist army regime? What his qualification is for to be listed as a “Defender of Good Cause”

What Thero doing is warning the minorities to come under Old Fraud, but beware if they thought of flipping the Thosai, it will not hurt Old Fraud, but he will flip- he is flipping now-and he was flipping, and it is always the pain for minorities. So he is telling that there is no relief for minorities from Majoritarianism and it is only unending slavery whether they support of Old Royals or New Royals or Ranil.

Thero Rogue is convoluting the facts. Old King, after 2010of his victory, had appointed Nimal de Siri Pala to scrap 13A. Old King refused to conduct Provincial (Especially NPC) elections. Douglas wanted him to appoint him as CM. Old King let Anandasangari, Karuna and Douglas fight for one bone that didn’t exist.
India was giving real pressure to get it done. Manmohan Singh even refused to talk to Old King when they were at New York on UN meeting. To teach India a lesson, after Manmohan Singh had left, New King threw World biggest Party at Hotel Waldorf Astoria for entire world leaders. Only Mahmoud Ahmadinejad peed in through the window, nobody came in. Sinhala Intellectuals and Extended Old Royal Family feasted on what diplomats refused to lick and get obligated- Thero was not allowed even to get a smell of it, The Old Guard Vas was the guard on that.
It was in January,2012 when TNA was waiting for meeting on the negotiation, Old King ordered his people not to addend to the meeting. Indian FAM Krishna came to Maddu Pongal with Sonia’s message and after eating Sinhala Pokkai, told Sampanthar TNA cannot bargain anything but must accept anything Old Royal wants to do for it. But American Under Secretary Robert Blake said that if its a negotiation, it should be agreeable for both parties. He was on the process of taking OId King to UNHRC. As per Sampanthar, in (2018)Local Government campaign meeting, Old Royal teams physically threatened him in Temple Tree House (2013?). But in end of 2013, when Old Fraud conducted the PC elections, his fate started to get out of submerge and started to surface. He declared that there was minority, but latter in 2015, feel the sting of it and come to awake.
Old King is a sunken boat, now NCM is re-lifting it to surface to sink it permanently in a deeper sea.

Dayan Jayatilleke has failed to realize the lesson when supporting the impeachment motion against R.Premadasa. Lalith Aththuladmugali and Gamini Dissanayake ignored him and eventually was disgraced at Kanatte. I think DJ is dreaming to get rid of Ranil Wickremasinghe. Ranil is bound to get over these difficulties and eventually become victorious. What benefit has DJ in splitting the communities and supporting the parasites which are supporting the no-confidence motion. Ranil is needed for the country at this crucial hour.

Muslim parties can never be trusted. They will wait until the last minute to decide to back RW or to jump ship accepting money and promises of ministerships. That has ALWAYS been their modus operandi.

TNA will be stupid to vote against RW; with RW they have the best hope of a political settlement and Eelam.

RW will WIN This and MR-Sirisena-Dayan will get lots of Eggs Benedict on their smug mugs.

When votes are counted, SLPP will only get 54. RW will win a resounding win with UNP-TNA-SLFP votes

Dream on Bro: Your NCM Will FAIL
RW will win this round and also become our President. Given all that is at stake and also the prospect of a mad fascist winning , RW is far better.

Young Dayan- A public racist spinning a sugar coated Thosai and a sugar coated Kottu-Rotti for the Tamil and Muslim political parties!
According to his logic, the 1972 Republican Constitution and the Mediawise Standardisation for University admissions shortly thereafter was as a result of the then Federal Party joining the UNP in the National Government led by Dudley Senanayake. Philip Gunawardena and even another public racist K.M.P. Rajaratne were members of that National Government between 1965- 1970.
Are these essays of Dayan motivated by his love for the MaRa clan or the hate he has for Premier Ranil.W?

“Are these essays of Dayan motivated by his love for the MaRa clan or the hate he has for Premier Ranil.W?”

He has been suffering from “Self-loathing” for quite sometime. The more he types the faster his self-esteem diminishes. The quality of the typing which counts not the quantity. It seems there is an inverse relationship between his frequency of typing and quality and again you would have noticed there is an inverse relationship between his quality and his self esteem.

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power” Abraham Lincoln

MR had absolute power and he miserably failed. He exercised nepotism, abuse of power, mass corruption, murders, intimidations, and arrogation of power through gerrymandering. MR is a living example of the above Lincoln Quote; why then he needs to be brought back to power?

Why is Dayan batting for Mahinda Rajapaksa under whose dispensation there was murder (35 media personnel were killed), white van abductions, corruption, waste (Mihin Airways) nepotism? More than 50 LTTE senior leaders surrendered to the army at Vadduvaakal on May 18th evening. Among them were Yogi, Rathnathurai, Thilakar, and Balakumar with his son and others. Their friends and relatives were told that they were being taken for a short inquiry and they will be released soon. How soon? They have gone missing from that date. Could Dayan ask from Mahinda or Gotabhaya the whereabouts of these cadres? If they are not among the living can he find out who murdered them? Who precisely gave the orders to kill them? If Dayan thinks the Tamils have short memory, he is mistaken. He is also mistaken if he thinks he can intimidate the Tamils. Dayan throughout his political career beg was a turncoat beginning from his stint as the Minister of Labour under Varatharajaperumal’s cabinet until today. If tomorrow, Ranil gives him a job as Ambassador he will accept it. Thereafter, he will be a supporter of Ranil standing on four legs. Finally, Dayan should stop whining and crying like a baby. If Rajapaksa has majority support of the majority of people just go ahead. Tamils need no lessons on politics from racists like Dayan.
