The Unforgivable Betrayal In The Sri Lankan Political History?

By MYM Siddeek

There is a widespread rumour that Mithripala Sirisena agreed to nominate Mahinda Rajapaksa as a parliamentary candidate for the forthcoming parliamentary election. Many people do not believe this rumour for the reasons well known to the world. The victory of MS in the presidential election in January 8th, 2015 was not a surprise because it was expected that the Tamil and Muslim minority groups that were subjected to serious injustices by the MR government since 2005 would overwhelmingly vote for him. As expected, they came out to vote for MS in great strength. For example, over 68 percent of the votes in the Northern Province was polled in distinct contrast to the 2010 elections when Jaffna district saw only 25 percent polling and the other districts of Wanni region saw just  40 percent polling. The Muslims too voted with unusual enthusiasm and in large numbers for MS. Overall the election registered a record turnout exceeding 81%. Their votes were mainly anti-MR than pro-MS. The people voted for MS to get rid of MR tyranny rather than being convinced by the pledge of MS to implement the 100-day reform program. Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalese population too objected to the amount of power accrued by MR’s family and corruption of his regime. In other words what they wanted was a regime change. The country never witnessed such a communal unity among the major three communities in the Sri Lankan history in an election. There were clear reasons for this. It was obvious that many Tamils were believed to have voted heavily for MS not because they supported him but because they hated MR so much. Muslims, the second-largest ethnic minority, also voted against MR, who was accused of backing BBS and other racist groups and turning a blind eye on anti-Muslim violence in June last year in Aluthgama and Beruwela areas. As for the Sinhalese, MS’s entry into the race gave them another credible option if they wanted Sri Lanka to move in a right direction.

MaithriTherefore, if MS agrees to nominate MR in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, the people will never forgive him and they will consider it as the biggest betrayal of the people in the Sri Lankan political history. He will be clearly branded as a traitor. It may also be the end of his political career after he completes his term of office in little more than four years’ time. People now urge MS not to make such historic mistake in his political career. The voters entrusted him with the task of cleaning the mess, eliminating corrupt practices, restoring rule of law and ensuring good governance by eliminating the family rule on the 8th January 2015. President MS himself repeatedly said this publicly on several occasions before and after the election. What would make him to take a big U turn and betray 6.2 million voters?

When we go back to pre January 2015 days, it will be very clear why the people voted for MS. When MS announced on 21 November 2014 that he would challenge incumbent President MR at the 2015 presidential election as the common opposition candidate a large number of people even did not know well who he was. But the people were convinced very much with his election propaganda and promises. MS claimed that everything in Sri Lanka was controlled by MR and that the country was heading towards a tyranny with widespread corruption, nepotism and a breakdown of the rule of law. Although he promised to abolish the executive presidency within 100 days of being elected, repeal the controversial eighteenth amendment, re-instate the seventeenth amendment and appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as prime minister, the main convincing appeal to the people was getting rid of MR. He also said immediately after he was elected president, ‘no more abductions, no more censorship, no more family rule, no more dictatorship.’ Soon after his declaration as the Presidential candidate, MS said “Today 48 political parties and organisations have united as a common coalition regardless of party policies, ethnicity and religion to defeat MR’s corrupt regime.” During his election campaign, MS said that he had warned MR to change his ways or risk new unrest in the country. He further said that MR was leading the country down a dangerous road to destruction. He also said that “I came out because I could not stay anymore with a leader who had plundered the country, government and national wealth.” Since MS’s defection, dozens of MR loyalist parliamentarians followed him. Is he going to betray all of them too if the rumour is proved to be true?

MS should not forget the fact that, as reported by some parliamentarians, MR even attempted to stage a coup in order to stay in power when it became clear he was going to lose the election. He should also remember that he was branded a “traitor” by MR’s close allies.

If MR is given nomination, it might be the end of the party and we will be able to see a large number of crossovers to the opposition. MS should not forget all the struggles the people, his allied parties and partners went through to elect him as President of this country. If he betrays the people by giving the country to MR again, he will have to pay a very big price for this. What is he going to tell those voters who relied on him and trusted him in the last Presidential election? People have not forgotten the dictatorial and family rule against which MS campaigned to become the President. MS should realise the fact that MR is trying to destroy the country once again.

When MS made a speech at the function to celebrate Chandrika Kumaratunga‘s 70th birthday at BMICH he did not forget to mention that he would take his decisions considering his party and the country. It also means that he will not put his party before the country and people who voted for him. It was a known fact that MR was detrimental to both the party and the country. Therefore, he needs to take a right decision not to allow MR as a candidate for the forthcoming parliamentary election. MS also did not fail to mention that he never thought of becoming President even in his dream and it was CBK who initiated the idea of putting forward his name as Presidential candidate. He also said that he never thought JVP and UNP would support him. Is he going to betray all these parties, personalities and the people? The decision and the country’s future are solely in his hand now!

well written article it clearly illustrates minorities people fear about MR regime. He devastated peace and harmony in the country. it is true he won the war Against LTTE and yet, he failed to win the hearts and minds of minorities in SL. He had a golden opportunities to open his heart for people of Sri Lanka and yet, he become power addicted and lost his head. Lesson learnt and reconciliation he set up as a eye wash to deceive international community and to escape any punishment. In addition to this, widespread fraud and corruption prevailed in his regime
How could one bring him back into power? It would be madness and it would be crazy to do this. Sri Lankan people are not so stupid to do this. Only MR and co want to do this .otherwise, more of their fraud dealings will come out, that is why they want to come to power to cover up all their wrong doings.
look at people around him now. All of them had some sort of fraud dealings.
people should think twice this time before they want for any one

You, DR RIFAI, clearly says “… well written article it clearly illustrates minorities people fear about MR regime…”

What about the fear of the majority called Sinhalese Buddhists, Dr R …?
Isn’t it that the fear go both ways, my dear Dr?
The fear of the majority clearly showed in the last presidential election as MR got the overwhelming huge number of votes from the majority …

      Dear Dr. R,
When u have time please expand your thoughts on minority and majority in SL … Tamils, Muslims, Catholics are NOT minorities in this GLOBALl village … These minorities in SL but OVERWHELMING MAJORITY in the global village are extremely wealthy, powerful and could counted in thousands of millions …
Sinhalese Buddhists are a minority of minorities in this global village and there is no presence in outside world … With all the haters of sinhalaelse/Buddhists, no wonder this minority community of the global village be extremely careful about the agendas of the majorities of the GLOBAL VILLAGE…

      Cheers, Dr R …

        Dear Dr. MYM Siddeek,

The Secretaries of the SLFP and the UPFA are both MR supporters.

What will happen if either of them nominate MR as a Candidate not withstanding objections from Maithree?

        Kind Regards,

“What about the fear of the majority called Sinhala Buddhists” ?- bruno

You have now divided Sinhalaese as Buddhists Sinhalese and other Sinhalese. So you are now talking about Buddhists only. So you are not bothered about other Sinhalese who are not Buddhists.Globally, Buddhists are not minorities. The world power China, and Japan belongs to Buddhists and Buddhists live in many other countries like Butan, Vietnam, Thailand etc.
In regard, Buddhist Sinhalese fear it is funny that you assume that the majority of Sinhalese voted for Mahinda because of fear in the last presidential election? What about 2010 election? Mahinda got 58% in 2010 compared to 48% in 2010. Actually, Buddhist Sinhalese who felt that Mahinda is not a good man. He was greedy of power. Why he wanted to come to power 3rd time? Why can’t he hand over the power to another Buddhist Sinhalese? Do you think that Mahinda is a Sinhala Buddhist and Maithiri is not?

The fear of Srilankan Tamils and Srilankan Muslims are real. The Buddhist Sinhala governments whether it is Mahinda or SWRD or JR Jeyawardana government they killed Tamils and Muslims in the name of fear of Sinhala Buddhists.

What you are suggesting is to get rid of Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese who are not Buddhists to be eliminated (killed) from this island in order to get rid of the fear of Buddhists. Am I right?

The majority fears all over the world is real. When the minority whites ruled South Africa they called it apartheid and the international community helped the black African majority to get rid of the white minority rule!
What has happened to the so called ‘Arab spring’? Millions in Iraq, Libya,Syria etc are suffering and dying, thousands more are defying death in boats to seek asylum in Europe. Where is the US,UK and EU and others who created this situation doing?
It is now proven that multiculturalism does not work. If Sri Lanka is to progress they should ban all ethnic and religion based political parties.

          • 1
            2

Multiculturalism works in many countries. It worked even in srilanka before foregin occupation. Unfortunately, it is now not working becauseof Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalism. If you want to ban all ethnic, rascist parties there is no political parties will exist in the South. They only represent Buddhist Sinhala.

        Dear Bruno.
Do not you know BBS is created by MR and His bro. Which paved the way to his downfall. Do not you know that BBS is responsible for all atrocities in Sri Lanka. where have been for the last four years.
Why he did not stop it. It may have gone out of hands. Why did he allow to treat all minorities as second class people. Look Upcountry Tamils, Christians, Tamil in north and East, Muslims and all other minorities constitute more than 50% today in Sri Lanka so government must treat them all equally, otherwise, what this country will become one more Somaliya. 30 years of blood thirst enough. enough is enough. Talk about peace, harmony. Tamil youth took arms because of people like you? because you spread hatred. You do not like peace

      To Mahinda Rajapaksa and Cronies.

      NUTS!

The President of The Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka.

      *****************************

You should have learned from the American Soldier, Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe, who said “Nuts” to the Germans when he was surrounded in the Black Forest during World War 2.

      Anthony McAuliffe

According to various accounts from those present, when McAuliffe was given the German message, he read it, crumpled it into a ball, threw it in a wastepaper basket, and muttered, “Aw, nuts”. The officers in McAuliffe’s command post were trying and failing to come up with suitable language for an official reply when Lt. Col. Harry Kinnard suggested that McAuliffe’s first response summed up the situation pretty well, and the others agreed. The official reply was typed and delivered by Colonel Joseph Harper, commanding the 327th Glider Infantry, to the German delegation. It was as follows:

      To the German Commander.

      NUTS!

      The American Commander

Anthony Clement “Nuts” McAuliffe (July 2, 1898 – August 11, 1975) was a United States Army brigadier general who earned fame as the acting division commander of the 101st Airborne Division troops defending Bastogne, Belgium, during World War II’s Battle of the Bulge.

After the Battle of the Bulge, McAuliffe was promoted to lieutenant general and given command of his own division, the 103rd Infantry, which he led from January 1945 to July 1945. On 3 May 1945, the 103rd captured Innsbruck in the Austrian alps, continued on to take the Brenner Pass, then earn the honor of joining the Italian and Western European fronts, linking up with the U.S. Fifth Army which had been fighting its way north up the Italian peninsula at Vipiteno, Italy.[2]

Mr. MYM Siddeek you are spot on.

As for Mahinda Rajapakse winning the war ……… He was at the right place at the right time …….. Yet, he is claims ALL the credit!

I dare say, that if Mahinda Rajapakse had the acumen to win the war – with such acumen he would have made Sri Lanka a safe haven.

Alas, with no such acumen – he took Sri Lanka to the brink of disaster – for which reason he was ignobly thrown out of office.

The voting pattern in his defeat shows that almost 40% of Sri Lankans believe that the law-of-the-jungle prevails -above all – and these are the very same people who he has compromised who are trying to herald him back in – Only to save their skin.

If Mahinda Rajapakse gets a place in the corridors-of-power he will use his ill gotten gains; his lack of empathy; his minions to compromise more people with fear or favour.

He and his cabal have compromised the people of Sri Lanka in very many ways and as time goes by – we will begin to understand why he should be hung as a traitor, along with his co-conspirators.

“almost 40% of Sri Lankans believe that the law-of-the-jungle prevails -above all – and these are the very same people who he has compromised who are trying to herald him back in – Only to save their skin. “

Here is a story which recently appeared on Lanka News Web. Note that the “very same people” scratch each others back without shame or remorse:

Help find Sarath Silva’s trousers lost in the Diyawanna banks!

      02 July 2015

Do humans wear clothing to cover their nudity? Or else, it just because others wear them? This question comes to our mind when considering the conduct of former chief justice Sarath Nanda Silva. Yesterday (01), he went to Medamulana to listen to a sermon, and sat close to Mahinda and Shiranthi, just like he did as the bestman at their wedding. Now, he was at this political funeral of Mahinda. True friends are like that.

However, a few months ago, addressing an anti-Rajapaksa rally at the Ananda Samarakoon outdoor theatre in Nugegoda, it was this same Sarath Silva who apologized to the entire nation for having heard the Helping Hambantota case wrongly and having freed Mahinda Rajapaksa, the tsunami thief. Sarath Silva has proved several times that shamelessness is worse than the office of the chief justice.

One case in point is when he was caught by police with a beautiful female lawyer sans his trousers in a car parked by the Diyawanna Oya banks. A naked Sarath Silva called from his mobile phone the then fiheries minister and his Law College buddy Mahinda Rajapaksa. Making maximum use of the opportunity, Rajapaksa got him freed. But, that was the beginning of Sarath Silva’s getting arrested by Mahinda Rajapaksa. In his hurry, Sarath Silva escaped from police and went home without his trousers thanking Mahinda. From that day on, he does not wear trousers.

Showing his gratitude, Sarath Silva helped Mahinda on more than one occasion during the period he was the CJ. He paved the way for Chandrika to go home early and for Mahinda to contest the presidential election. He saved Mahinda who was about to go to prison for having swindled millions of tsunami aid money, and threatened the complainant, Kabir Hashim, the present UNP general secretary, with imprisonment if he did not withdraw the case at the Supreme Court.

When observing the Five Precepts, Sarath Silva does not say the third and fifth ones, and he is a born storey teller and a good drinker. On Chandrika’s order and using his knowledge and together with G.L. and Jayampathy, he made a big contribution to the committee tasked with drafting a new constitution. It should be mentioned here that the expertise of Sarath Silva, the bad man he is, on constitutional law is second only to that of the late SC judge Mark Fernando.

During the deliberations of this committee, while having a drink Sarath Silva targets his Law College buddy Mahinda as his ‘bite.’ Mahinda, a complete ignoramus of the law, was prepared for the exam by his batchmates the late Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, former SC judge Nihal Jayasinghe and Sarath Silva. At that time, most of the Law College qestion papers consisted of multiple choice questions. Bribing the college’s peons, Sarath Silva and others lift the question papers on the night before the exam and train Mahinda, not to understand the questions, but to underline the third choice for the first question, first choice for the second question etc. But, Mahinda does the reverse. For the first question, he underlines the second choice and for the second question he underlines the third choice. “At that time, he proved to us that all his generations were herdsmen,” Sarath Silva says to loud laughter by all those present.

That Sarath Silva apologized to the entire nation just a few months ago for not having sent Mahinda Rajapaksa to prison. Both he and Mahinda do not remember the past. Both think that we too, are fools like them. Anyhow, we appreciate Sarath Silva’s decision to get buried along with Mahinda.

It was the then president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who committed the historic wrong of having appointed Sarath Silva as the CJ. On the night previous to the appointment day, Chandrika told renowned human rights lawyer and her close friend, senior advocate R.K.W. Gunasekara who asked as to who would be appointed to the position, “Don’t worry, Mark is my choice.” Chandrika assured him that Mark would be made the CJ, on the basis of his seniority and expertise on law.

However, it did not happen. Mark was cut because he was a Catholic, and Sinhala Buddhist Sarath Silva was made the CJ. R.K.W. Gunasekara could not forget, until his death because he was such a sensitive person, this outrageous breach of promise by a president. Several times, Chandrika apologized to him, but he never pardoned her. Today, the entire nation is experiencing the result of that wrong.

No doubt Sarath Silva will deliver the eulogy and farewell speech for MR one day. He will forget about ‘Tsunami Hora’ and ‘Hedging Deal’.

Sarath Silva is another budding Bodhisatva who has done all the damage to this country and people and is now on the way to achieving Nirvana. He takes his place alongside the likes of Gammanpila, Modawanse and P—- Vasu.

I would like to remind you that MR did not use much brains to win the war. Winning the war was easy for him as it matched with his character who is a cruel and a heartless person. He won the war by killing all the people who lived there and so the LTTE members also got killed with the people. Who can’t win such a war, you don’t need brains for i and only thing you need is the hardware. He deserves no praise for it. Can he use the same strategy in the south and certainly no? That is the reason he is facing serious war crimes charges and the methods used cannot be counted justifiable or legal for any standards of justice.

He is a person who should be in jail for life and a dangerous criminal walking free. This is not just once single offence against him and he faces so many allegations and he was lucky to wade them off again only because of the LTTE who prevented Ranil Wickremasinghe becoming President. He stole millions in donor aid money in the ‘Helping Hambantota’ scam. He should not have been allowed to contest and it was a wrong decision by court to postpone the case because he was contesting for Presidency. He won the elections and Lasantha Wickrematunge who exposed him had to die under tragic circumstances and there are many rumours as to whose orders he got killed. He should be tried and there is no doubt as to the guilty verdict and he be locked up in jail. Such dangerous criminals should not be allowed to be free.

You are 100% correct when you said “I dare say that if Mahinda Rajapakse had the acumen to win the war – with such acumen he would have made Sri Lanka a safe haven.”

He is a cruel person committed so much of harm under the cover of presidential immunity, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know who gave the orders for all the criminal activities during his tenure. The harassment he inflicted on the Muslims and ‘Grease men’ he used to harass people in Jaffna, murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge and the list goes on. He should be in jail for life and now a dangerous criminal walking free.

UN. They have a lot of files on all war criminals.

They can even tell David Blacker when the toilets are vacant, when he needs a wee wee, whether he washes his hands after emptying his bladder, of course everything one needs to know about him, by peeping through the holes, a peeping Tom next door, or from eye in the sky.

He silenced any body who spoke against his rule in any which way he wanted…. looted the country to near bankruptcy for him his family and his bad of thieves.

and today he wants to come back to power to avoid his thieves and his family and himself being prosecuted .

I do understand the frustration of Author”s approach in this article. However I do like to shed light on the positive side of MS ‘ Decision to nominate MR to contest in this upcoming election. Let the people Say their view democratically whether to elect him or not. If he is elected again as a PM , then bring the charge against him and convict him in accordance with law. I agree with Dr Siddek that MS is concerned about his party rather than country or its people. However division of his party would create chaos , which eventually make a huge impact on this country and its people. The failure of MS was his delaying tactic to punish the culprits of previous regime , including MR and his brothers and his associates. I hope and trust the think tank of MS would have advised him to “slowly slowly catching the monkeys “. We would have to wait and see the political wisdom of Chandrika on this particular issue.

But then My3 is only a Sri Lankan politician after all. Principles are so hard to find in the tribe of politicians we have had ever since independence. The sheer incompetent, imbecilic way the Rajapakses ruled Sri Lanka by themselves post-LTTE, is clear evidence that they were not responsible for the defeat of the LTTE. One is also not sure if it’s just Sarath Fonseka; one has to suspect that Sri Lanka got help from many countries. Truth be told, the last stages of the war – after Mavil Aru – was fought with a competence that has eluded the Sinhalese before and post-LTTE.

Let us not beat about the bust, for Gotabaya any solution to a problem is murder.

Mahinda ruled Sri Lanka similar to a Mafia godfather; doling out patronage for allegiance.

Not giving nominations would it not be an injustice to 5.8 million SLFP ers who still want him?

You base your article on a ‘widespread rumour’. I am afraid it lacks credibility .

Well articulated. MR’s nomination is verily a recipe for disaster waiting to happen. Let’s hope sanity prevails in the end. MR always misjudged the intelligence of the people and rode rough shod over them. He never proved himself as a good administrative leader for the country, but had a hopscotch of political traits gained from years of being in politics. He lost the common touch of the people, and operated from a different wavelength. A lot has already been written about his family nepotism, cronyism, bandyism, thuggery and his love for ill-gotten wealth through profit share of narco trafficking and ethanol imports for production of illicit liquor, which eventually leads towards the ruin of the nation. His instinctive racist qualities never allowed him to extend his hands of friendship towards the Tamil people after defeating the LTTE and claiming victory over them. Instead under his watch, another riot started against Muslims living in Aluthgama using proxies such as BBS, RB and a member of his own alliance, JHU. As the leader of the country, MR must take full responsibility, since the police force and army were made impotent and stood aimless and helpless with firearms in their hands. Besides that, what did he have to say on the successful hartal called for by all Muslims countrywide to close shops and business houses as a mark of protest against those attacks, words to the effect, ‘what is this silly hartal when such fights are just commonplace happening, and these fights occur from time to time, it makes no sense to conduct such hartals at every turn when such fights keep happening all the time in our country’. His words to belittle the tragic events that took place on that fateful day still keep ringing in my ear and I am sure other people too will not forget it in a hurry. This must also be recorded in history for future generations to know what really took place, and how minorities were treated by those in power.

In my opinion, he is definitely a no-gooder and does not deserve a third chance in having a say in any of the country’s affairs, let alone leadership positions, nor worthy of any position to decide on matters relating to the welfare of the people, nor intellectually capable to provide unbiased input in support of any decision making process.

The 100 day program, whose program is it? It was Maithripala Sirisena’s Presidential election promise. Today if we look back who has failed? Is it UNP or Maithripala? Clearly it is evident that Maithripala could not deliver what he promised the Country, Chandrika, JHU, UNP, Sobitha Thero and the voters of Sri Lanka. So the same party SLFP and the coalition UPFA are attacking yahapalanaya and the 100 day programme. They are attacking Maithripala Sirisena for not being a person with a back bone. So its the failure of Maithripala and not UNP.

I am ashamed that the person I supported Maithripala Sirisena has no backbone or even Konda Pana has cheated me by giving nomination to Rajapakse. Maithripala has said Sadu Sadu Sadu to Rajapakse.

Mr Siddeek your analysis is correct. However, if Sirisena does not go with Mahinda and puts up his own lists it will do very very badly. I am not moralising but just stating a bare fact. Therefore I don’t know what he will do.

I feel sorry for the poor man but the fault is his own. He did not take tough action against the crooks right at the beginning and he did not arrest Mahinda for the attempted coup.

Wake up brother. Mahinda is coming. The racists are the Tamils and the Muslims in this country. For God sake learn to speak Sinhala and integrate into the larger Sri Lankan society. In Germany people speak German despite other minorities living as citizents, In France it is only French, In UK only English. Why is that the Tamils and Muslims in Sri Lanka think it is demeaning for them to speak the majority language. Because of dumb heads like you the Muslim society is backward and think Ranil can save them. What is going to happen in the next election is that the nationalist forces are going to overwhelm the minority votes to prove a point.

They are most eager to lick the back of white man!
Is it the big attack on Buddhism?
They tried to destroy it from outside, after they failed, now they create BBS from inside and try to destroy it.
It is a shame Mahinda could not stop these outfits when they popped,
Mahinda has never been a racist. He is always a friend of down trodden

Please update your IQ and then come to defend MR

Wee Thamihz Senior Journalist Siva Sankaran Sarma Menon

You forgot to mention Sinhala in your list of languages.

I am told that there is a huge demand for Sinhala-English translators as a lot of the recently arrived Sinhala speaking refugees/asylum seekers need help at the courts/hospitals/dole offices/Councils/ ……… as do the Tamils.

Siva Sankaran Sarma was replying Peace Lover.

            Siva replicated Peace Lover’s list.
Hence he did not forget but wrote a relevant reply

The point Siva makes is that the UK govt or local govt will not employ anyone without a knowledge of English.

Even your irrelevant example needs a knowledge of English!

Was that a “WISE” wisecrack or an Idiotic one?

Why we still talk about the ‘kerum’ of Dutugemunu and Parakramabahu not forgetting the last race riots of 1915, which are also events of the past. So why not revisit the disgraceful behavior of monks on 15th and 16th June 2014, nearly a century later. By the way, this time it has been documented in vivid true color motion, and will be seen by many generations to come. No one can ever deny or doubt these facts.

        Dear Sharia,

There is a factual error in your comment.

1915 was a RELIGIOUS riot, not a race riot.

The Esala Perahera (the pageant of the Temple of the Tooth, Kandy) dates back to the 3rd century BC and is celebrated over 15 days. The day perahera on the 15th day ends with the water cutting ceremony at Porutota on the Mahaveli Ganga. The route from the Devale (Hindu Temple) to Porutota takes the Ambagamuwa Road and it had been so for millennia.

In 1912 the Coastal Muslim threatened to riot if the perahara came within 100 yards of their NEW Mosque (built in 1890s).
        .
The Government Agent informed the Basnayake Nilame of the Devale that a license for the perahera was subject to complying with the Coastal Muslim demand. This was promptly rejected by Devale authorities and the 1912 Perahara was canceled and instituted action against the Attorney General on 30th September 1913.

        Quote

“The trial of the case came before the District Court of Kandy on 20th March 1914 before Dr (later Sir) Paul E. Pieris, Acting District Judge of Kandy. The learned judge delivered his judgement on 4th June 1914, declaring the plaintiff ‘entitled to the privilege set out in the second paragraph of his complaint’ (viz. “the right and privilege of marching and to and from and through all the streets of the town of Gampola including that portion of Ambagamuwa street……. With elephants to the accompaniment of tom-tom drums and other musical instruments”).

        Unquote

You can read more details on how the Colonial Govt’s mishandling led to the rioting in 1915 at the following link.

mr.patriot, when is convenient you want us to follow western countries.otherwise you will say they are imperialists and colonial rulers trying to destroy our country.why dont’ you talk about canada or swiss. most of the western countries are multicultural encourage foreigners to practice their own culture.
you are totally ignorant about the number of people both tamils and muslims who are fairly fluent in sinhala. there are no muslims/tamils who refuse to study sinhala. it is a a waste of time to educate you on these matters. podubala sena is very suitable for you. i do not think sinhala people are fools to go behind MR once again. pl. note that they mainly participated in the defea tof MR.

Mahinda is a thug and his method is to instill fear. MS too would have been threated by
his henchmen in the Forces, over some illeagl Tp. connection threatening the killing of
his whole family, if MR does not get a nomination`. So, MS cites intelligence services
    and grants nomination!!

Well, I will vote for Mahinda, PROVIDED he submits in the open a DECLARATION OF ASSETS
FORM to the EC, and not a set of blank papers in a sealed envelope !

Does he deserve to become a Parlimentarian at all on SB Votes, when it is alleged he
killed his first wife and the file was “lost” with the help of Ranil? Sunday Leader
can investigate this if they are capable of doing so re the expenses of Sajin Vass
under MR? MS too revealed how MR shot a person while electioneering in the past.

This allegation is baseless and irresponsible. Please tries to understand the context of the crisis . The Unp did all wrong and they accuse Sirisena now . My view is that common candidacy is the beginning of all going wrong , unless sirisena and others all who congregated against Rajapaksa should have continued under symbol of duck until the next general election but this lot only thought about deposing Rajapaksa and not about the future .this is what evidence of the crisis.none of them had A plan of restoring and implementing the good governance in the country . That’s why Unp said they would fight alone on the general election , this is the breaking point .if the Unp and sirisena determined to stay on one objective as they promised before the election there would not have a problem like this . Therefore, sirisena as the chairman of pa that he has to drive party to win on up coming election which is normal and morally right .this is very important to understand by every one . I suggest that sirisena is innocent on the issue and Unp went wrong side and ruined the unity of campaign, therefore Unp should hold the responsible for the mess that has risen today. Definitely not sirisena .

I can’t understand why everybody is going ‘viral’ at this stage.

MR has only been given leave to be nominated to contest in the General Elections.

One the elections are over it will be sole prerogative of the President to appoint as Prime Minister the person who in his opinion will command the majority in the House.

He has only to appoint Nimal Siripala as Prime Minister (which he will willingly accept) – and MR will be history!

What is this fuss all about. This is a very biased article in fear of the return of MR.

MS is not handing MR the Prime Minister post as he did to RW who had no mandate. Anyone should be able to contest for the elections and their mandate is decided by the people. The issue here is the fear that MR has popular support and will be return a powerful force. The blam should be directed at RW for being so weak and an arrogant leader who destroyed the UNP and thus we are left with no option but MR.

If any one expected that the victory of Maithri and the defeat of Mahinda would bring about a complete change towards a ‘healthy political culture’ and ‘good governance’, that expectation has been concluded without considering the prevalent political culture that has taken strong root in Sri Lanka. As a part of this political culture deliberate failure to ignore election-time promises, frequent cross-overs from one party to another, shifting of party alliances from one to another, etc.etc. have become too common. These are clear betrayals of the peoples’ expectations caused by the promises of the deliberately failing politicians. Although honestly committed sections of the civil society initiated the campaign for a true and lasting change towards the better the implementation of the action needed to make the change unfortunately happens to be in the hands of the politicians who took charge of the affairs of the Govt. after the defeat of Mahinda. The majority of the politicians who took charge sadly come from the same old political culture of betrayal. So it is not surprising that betrayals seems to continue leaving the civil society campaigners to only lament over the disappointment they have to face and the sad general public who have to continue live in an never-ending atmosphere of uncertainties in the conduct of their lives. Still, a true change can be brought about by correcting the mistake of leaving the process of change in the hands of the same old betraying politicians and moving encouraging emergency new groups of politicians who show consistency in their principles and policies en engaging in the service of the people.

Commando and other day give PMship to nimal should UPFA get enough seats to form a parliament and problem solved! It’s easier said than done, MR will have large number of supporting MPs – president can’t just give anyone the Pmship at his pleasure. It will be given to a person who commands the support of a majority. Appoint nimal ( doubt he’ll accept) he won’t have majority support. It’s not easily also all depend on how popular MR will be during the election. We have to wait and see.

Dont lose any sleep over Mara slipping up again.

He will be booted out of politics for good in August.

The Elephant will reign for the next thirty years after being firmly installed in power on that august day in August.

Neither the Medamulana Kabaragoya nor the Polonnaru Wimpiya will be able to show their faces or any other thing again.
