The UNP’s Implosive Collapse & A Dying Democracy

By Dayan Jayatilleka –

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

The attack on the anti-Ranil march and the resultant punch-up in the South over the weekend brought home a fourfold political truth:

  1. The UNP which was haemorrhaging votes and MPs is now spilling blood in fratricidal political strife. (What next? A grenade attack on an anti-Ranil rally?)
  2. The UNP is two parties masquerading as one: the Reactionaries who insist that Ranil remain leader and the Reformists who realize that unless Ranil goes now, the party may not be salvageable before the next round of national level elections.
  3. Unless Mr Wickremesinghe is immediately replaced by a unifying and healing figure, the UNP will die of voter defections, organizational deadlock, disintegration in street-fights and sheer debilitation of morale.
  4. The resultant political disequilibrium will result in the slow death of democracy in the South.

The UNP is dying of multiple causes. It is losing votes; its own as well as those new votes it should have attracted as an Opposition party. It is losing parliamentarians, the latest and most visible being Dayasiri Jayasekara. It is losing activists and representatives through absurd disciplinary inquiries– ‘purges’—of which two young lawyers Shiral Laktilleke and Maithri Gunaratne are examples. It is losing numbers in parliament and at every level of the political system, through loss of votes and elected representatives. Now it is losing blood, morale and public sympathy by attacking its dissidents in the streets in full view of TV cameras.

Mr Mangala Samaraweera’s march which crashed headlong into the anti-Ranil demonstration, and the attacks which followed that initial disruption, has suicide-bombed and pre-emptively wrecked the UNP’s election campaign for the Southern Provincial Council and perhaps the West and Uva too.

Demonstrators in Mangala’s ranks were heard on TV to shout “we want a Government with Ranil in it!” (Apita Oney Aaanduwak! Ranil Ekka Aanduwak!”). The reality is that they already have such a government. (I owe my wife the wisecrack that Mr Wickremesinghe is the Government’s Minister of Opposition Affairs).

No one seems ready to accept the reality that there are two parties struggling under the tattered and perforated green tent. The Leadership Council proposal by the respected Ven Girambe Ananda was a last ditch attempt at unity. It was hopelessly utopian because it counted on Mr. Wickremesinghe’s good will and good sense. He is, however, as unready to leave the stage as the most obdurate and recalcitrant ancien regime. Therefore, the UNP can be saved only by two procedures. Firstly, the party must be rebuilt under the leadership of a personality who can re-unite the party’s factions, provide a healing touch. I can only think of the benign father figure within the UNP, Karu Jayasuriya. Secondly the UNP must recharge its batteries, renovate, re-brand and re-launch with a candidate who can energise an electoral ‘ground game’. I can only think of Sajith Premadasa.

Both these steps presuppose an immediate recognition that Ranil Wickremesinghe, as the cause or larger part of the problem, cannot be any part of the solution. The UNP needs to make a gesture which shows the national electorate that it has cut away from the dark era of appeasement of the Tigers. It must also show its own members that it has turned a page and that the old face of failure is gone; a new look is in place which will enable to the party to revive.  These two moves require the replacement of Ranil as leader and a new optics that keep him out of public view.

If the UNP retains Ranil as leader, the process of shredding through internecine strife will continue, and out of sheer dismay, the party will lose its voters and activists well before it crashes at the next election.

The UNP’s Communications and Media chief Mr Samaraweera accused a large private media organization and its chief of playing a role against Ranil Wickremesinghe. If true, he should have asked himself what the reason was. He should then ask himself before he attacks a player in the private media space, how he expects to win an election with both the state media and an influential segment of the private media ranged against his leader and candidate.

Those who support Ranil should realise that as the UNP votes shrink their chances of re-election to parliament begin to vaporise and that they will be subject to a further penalty by the UNP voters themselves who will probably display their revulsion by not casting a preference vote for those who stood by the most disastrous leader a democratic party has ever had.

If democracy dies in the Southern two thirds of the island it will not be because it was murdered by Mahinda Rajapaksa but because the main Opposition, the UNP, committed suicide on Ranil Wickremesinghe’s watch, retaining him as leader.

As much as people want democracy (mob rule) to work it keeps failing due to the lack of honest leadership. A world wide phenomenon. No democratic institution is in a working condition today and those that seem to work collapses over a period of time. The best example is the birth place of democracy ‘Greece’ and recent ‘US’ shutdown. The preachers of democracy are struggling to avoid a debt default.

A call for a dump of U.S. treasury bonds by China, for example, in the face of a U.S. default, would immediately result in a global chain reaction ending in the destruction of the dollar as the world reserve currency. This is not speculation, this is mathematical fact. China is not going to sit back and do nothing while their investment in U.S. debt quickly disintegrates. Why would they take the chance when they could could just sell, sell, sell! A long term shutdown will be catastrophe no matter how you slice it. Foreign creditors will react harshly. The bond market will see a haircut not unlike that given to investors in Greek treasuries. Austerity will become an American way of life. In this situation, the U.S. would be facing a Weimar-style currency collapse, rather than a debt default. But in either scenario, the dollar is the final target and the dollar is just as vulnerable to a debt default and loss of reserve status. Devaluation seems to be inevitable regardless of the outcome of the funding debate. Non-essential personnel (which apparently includes Obomber’s maids), will be the first to receive a pink slip from the federal government. Military cuts will never be on the list.

Perhaps those who live by democrazy will die fighting.

In a democracy when there is no money they either print or go to war. The dollar is currency Franca and you know what happened to Qaddafi who tried to create a new benchmark for currency.
The Chinese have tried to use the sale of bonds as a weapon and the Americans have reacted with South China Sea encircling starting 2014. Hitler and Roosevelt both printed money so what happened?
The Chinese have 5000 kilometers of nuclear raid shelters but know for certain in the event of war they would get battered well and truly and none would come to their aid.
The ones who ate the sheep created America and that gene will never change.

If Ranil was placating the LTTE Why did Prabhakaran call him a fox who he cannot trust? Why did Prabahakaran ensure that Ranil lost?
Dayan Jayatilleka in your last post in CT you made unsustainable judgments about the PC elections and you got badly exposed.
Can you now answer my above questions before the CT forum? If you have the courage do so

Piyumi, you have said a mouthful. This miserable SOB Dayan De Silva, I do not know from where he has picked up the Jayatilake part, has been promoting anti- Ranil sentiments, merely for him to secure a place now that he has been discarded by MR. He believes if Ranil can be pushed out and that Bafoon Sajith elected, Dayan will be back on the saddle. What wishful thinking?

Now if according to this Bugger Dayan and the rest of Ranil’s critics that Ranil is not Popular anymore, how come Ranil’s supporters have thrashed these Anti-Ranil Buggers? Is it the Working Committee who have thrashed them?

Dayan has become Paranoid, writing article after article of tosh, displaying his Intellectual Bankruptcy. Wait for 2014 and see what will happen to all you Buggers including MR.

Readers please note that Dayan has dropped his title ‘Dr’ after he was exposed. Hope he takes the advice seriously and refrain writing further tosh, as he dropped the title.

      Piyumi Welikala,

The maggot living in the cesspit of the MARA has no answers to your valid questions because the asshole is lying from both ends of his stanching intestine.

This shameless animal taking on human form and wearing westernized attire and labeled Dayan Jayatilleka factually exhibits habits, traits and natures of pigs-shameless, muck raking, mud consuming and smearing, spoiling and desecrating everything he touches by his half educated knowledge. From the time of RP to MARA and now to the fugitive looking to creep in to the rogue den of born mutt Sajith the political pimp and loser, if one were to analyze and ponder on the sorry and shoddy life of this man, one cannot possibly find any contribution at all worth recognizing, real and lasting that is comparable to the much harangued and hyped “political analyst” and “educated” person he claims himself to be. On the contrary, this bugger has been a shitty bundle of contradiction, deception, diabolical fallacies and lies, mischief, a source of innumerable number of dishonesties and conspiracies and a pathetic loser. This man is suffering from an incurable mental disease where he interprets the world into his own conditioned and mutilated world view and then projects that view as the ultimate truth! This ultimate truth invariably hovers over and snugly fits on to his own egotistic, selfish and perversion thinking. This is exactly what this bastard is doing in this post of pathetic lies and misrepresentations of diabolical scale. He becomes so paranoid, fanatic and hysterical that he hits the reader with his morbid projectiles of “.. (What next? A grenade attack on an anti-Ranil rally?)..”!!! This whole “Anti-Ranil” drama and conspiracy are conceived in and implemented by the putrid minds of Dayan, Gotha goon, MARA goon, para demala Kili fucker’s Sirasa whore rag et al. This “Anti-Ranil” fiasco is an absolute necessity for their familial and rogue regime project propped up by “mind game criminals” like Dayan. The regime has been successful in disintegrating and destroying all the other political parties beyond recovery except perhaps TNA. However they have not been completely successful with UNP-though the branches were decimated the root is still there alive and kicking! It is this root they want to uproot at any cost. They are so desperate to achieve it they spend billions of rupees on “Oust Ranil” project. The innumerable number of staggered and “teledramatized” elections that are being conducted spending millions and millions of stolen money, election mal-practices and rigging, non-operation and shelving of various constitutional checks and balances and commissions, tampering and tinkering with the country’s constitution, judiciary, law enforcement authority and arms of democratic governance and civil administration, buying of opposition parliamentarians, the rendering of free media impotent and slavery to Rajapakshas to the extent that they are unable to utter the name “Rajapaksha” in criminal and kleptocracy connotation and eject a sorry sounding “beep, beep” instead are all telltale signs and symptoms of Dayan’s MARA regime is in utter desperation to completely destroy UNP by removing Ranil. To achieve this morbid end they have picked an ideal buffalo in Sajith. Other parasites like Maithree, Shiral, Dayasiri et al are being used too spending millions of robbed and plundered public money.

It is against such background and overt and covert facts that this shit-man DJ and “his mud and shit wisdom” must be understood. The village level buffalos do not understand these because the shit man’s shit regime has destroyed all free media and superimposed their stratospheric scale lies on all electronic and printed media. The plight of the average buffalo who even believed Sirima would bring down ration rice from Moon made worse by the SLFP traitors destroying country’s education system! This arm chair so called “political analyst” would have to find a culvert to breath his last when MARA’s rogue regime collapses and Sajith pimp is thrown to the political dustbin! Till then go on sowing more and more mischief, bloody fool!

        Hay Silva,

Looks like you are nothing but a scum bug commenting like an idiot. Go and check your brain somewhere.Dr.Dayan has all the rights to say whatever he wants and he is mature enough to analyse issues. Who is the absurd mutt to keep a leader who lost over 23 consecutive elections and still want to hang onto power.

Do you know how many Strikes or Tries in the West give……Only one Strike, and if you fail, you are out. No 23 OMG.

First of all Ranil is not a born politician or a political leader. He is not a warrior, but a soft spoken lethargic idealist. Even his own uncle JR confirmed it. His days are gone.

Ranil would never have offered MR the 2005 Presidential Election on a Platter. He would have fought for it to get back 2005 election from MR. But he did not. He missed the opportunity. Now it’s too late to regret or get it back.

Loosing over 23 consecutive elections and still heading the leadership post is a mystery.

Also the way Ranil acted and behaved when Gen. Sarath Fonseka was Jailed and when CJ Dr.Shirani Bandaranayake was impeached is questionable. He did not fight for them or for Justice.

Ranil has to clarify on his Black coffee evenings at Araliya Gaha with President. One has to question if he is a people’s person or a mere dreamer.

Ranil missed opportunities and now his time has passed and he should know about it.

I have to agree with Dr.Dayan, no matter what other comments say in this forum. We are all strong UNPers for Generations and are sorry to see the pathetic situation the party is facing now.

IT’S TIME FOR RANIL TO SAY GOOD BYE TO POLITICS.

I WROTE ONE YEAR AGO IN THE CT COMMENT SAYING IF RANIL LIKES TO GO RESPECTFULLY THEN, OR IF ROTTEN EGGS AND TOMATOES NEEDED TO KICK HIM OUT, AND IT IS HAPPENING NOW.

UNP has to come out with a new strategy to win back the elections.

Sri Lanka is fast becoming one of the most corrupt countries in the world with our passport is among the top worst ten under Rajapakse rule.

I still have faith in Gen.Sarath Fonseka as a true Patriot, a Leader, a strategist and a warrior who could challenge Rajapakses and could bring a change to our country.

I don’t see any other choice close by. Of couse Sagith will bring in much more votes that Ranil, but don’t know if he could muster a breakthrough to overcome Rajapakses. At the moment he is the only choice available.

Hope something good will come out through all these in house riots, divisions, personal injuries, heart aches, troubles and difficulties.

Hope and pray UNP will come out as a winner and let Dr.Dayan contribute writing to CT.

It is all DJ feels to be a senior political analyst, but all these making further clear that the man is just trying to pave the way his next post. Looking at the manner, that MR has accused him of being a POWERFUL NGO worker – reveals all that DJ´s contacts right at the moment are welcome neither of the sides in lanken politics. So if he would do some laundary work for Premadasa Junior, DJ can get posted to somewhere next. These are his plans for the future. The man is now exagerating. Trying to fish on muddy waters for own sake _ ayyo ayyo Dayan.

Having watched a video posted on youtube how Dayan feels about Dayasiri´s election victory – I myself, DJ´s thoughts are not far from those of Mervin´s actually: I thought this man s been explaining truth about lanken politics – just for one reason his mediation in 2009 helping MR regime not to get branded as war criminals and blocking the UN resolution then they wanted to pass against the brutal regime. How would this man -DJ have been behaving if MR regime extending his diplomatic tenures. There one could see how opportunistic the man has been. However, lack of senior people to compete with him has given him a great chance to dance as one man who himself called to be a political analyst, senior lecturer or the pundit who had then worked to murderous premadasas.

          Dayawathie Gunaratne,

Both your comments show your Political maturity. Please do home work before commenting.

Yes, Dr.Dayan rescued Sri Lanka in 2009 UNHRC resolution by assuring them on Sri Lanka’s HR record standing and the 13th Amendment.

But it was only President Rajapakse who broke the covenant by not implementing what he promised to them and later dumping Dayan when he questioned.

MR playing Hambantota “Bulath Kade” type politics cannot hoodwink or fool the International community. Look at where we stand today. Rajapakses are making themselves vulnerable to face Hague in future by playing “Hora Polis” politics.

Also Dayan has all the Academic qualifications and experience required to hold a top diplomatic position anywhere around the world. Not a grade 10 passed unqualified family goon to be an ambassador in the West. Remember there’s a saying that Donkeys sleep with Donkeys. They are uncomfortable with the Learnard and Professionals. That’s what has happened to our country today. Blind donkeys leading the Blind.

To your comment on Premadasas, it is a well known fact that ex.President Ranasinghe Premadasa was the only President who helped the poor and truly developed the rural Sri Lanka to a very high level. Gam udawa, divi neguma, 100,000 house project, university students support programmes are all his brain child. That’s why he is still popular among the villagers and Sajith has the best opportunity to bank on it.Therefore what Dr.Dayan say about both Ranasinghe Premadasa and Sajith is true.

Please in future do your proper homework (not the ITN, MR’s Daily lie News, and other Govt.propaganda news) before commenting.

Man, not Dayawathie, but you should better read Dayan^s previous articles.

Not long ago, he himself came with a set of articles making clear his stands. Today – he is even going to President^s invitations. How can you – or any sane do so if he is bound to principles. In lately held Aljazeera interview, president^s response about DJ was – that DJ works for a powerful NGO. To that, DJ has though commented, nevertheless to attend Wiggie^s swearing in ceremony is not comprehensible to any one actually.

As one of the commentators has added to other threads, I really dont think DJ is comparable to Jayantha Dhanapala and like great diplomats.

          • 0
            0

It is also well known fact..

that R premadasa deliberately killed over 50k youth for no reasons in late 80ties. Most of them – the victimized are University students (not necessarily they were active in JVP OR any other politics).

So what do you think about that ?

Gama Udawa projects were abusive wasting billions of funds just to show rural folks who air crafts functions etc.. the outcome of all those gigantic projects did not bring much. But I myself liked the way – he built houses for the poor across the country. I think any previous leader has done at least one good thing…

But if a leader is upto killings – for no reasons – he should be better be called as CRIMINAL rather than a leader.

There goes again the most educated fool in the country! I was thinking why the bugger was so late in posting his endlessly fornicated rubbish post. May be he was recovering from the “NGO assault” by his sugar daddy MARA in Al Jazeera! By the way what is the name of the NGO you are working for? It was the Executive President of Sri Lanka who holds the post, inter alia, of Chief Editor of all media in the country who uttered that statement and therefore it must have been based on facts and be very credible! We smell something fishy like Dayan working with some international group of conspirators against the country!

Look at what his loser says”

“..The attack on the anti-Ranil march and the resultant punch-up in the South over the weekend brought home a fourfold political truth:

1.The UNP which was haemorrhaging votes and MPs is now spilling blood in fratricidal political strife. (What next? A grenade attack on an anti-Ranil rally?)

This is not NGO stuff but genocidal conspiracies planned and planted by Dayan, Gota and Mara trio! The create proxies in pseudo UNPers and infiltrate them within, protect and provide funds. The latest incident comprised goons of Gotha. Since the conspirators were attacked and defeated by real UNPers they became infuriated and shot the people. Those who were shot are being arrested instead of the shooter! And while the fact remains such this [Edited out] Dayan, the [Edited out], is doing the “selling campaign” part of the conspiracy! You [Edited out] whose paternal roots are in doubt now, bear this in your dustbin head: the day your MARA bastard is butchered by people and his joker regime is demolished and a real government of real UNPers like Ranil comes into power, you [Edited out]! The first question the [Edited out] would have to answer would be who threw the grenade!

He is not most educated – he earned his PhD in his mid 40ties.

Just because he brings articles citing world journals means nothing – it is just to show that he is smart. He is self discriptive about his achievements.
But how many of the readers would go through all world lits to grasp what he hs been sprouting is right.
Right at the moment, only Tgunasekara has been the queen among all lanken authors fealessly calling a spade a spade

“He is not most educated – he earned his PhD in his mid 40ties.”

Beg to differ , it doesn’t really matter at what age he earned his P.hD, my question is , did he really earn it or awarded by colombo uni?

I myself read somewhere, that he had spent a few years – presumably for thesis work or the like in Australia. And whenever I read his – I have the feeling that the guy is only conscious of his achievements (very self descriptive).

Agree with yours to some extent but depending on the field, as you added – earning PhDs are varied. For example natural scientists achieve more in their carrier life if they earned their PhDs much earlier.

One of the leaders of the protest march against Ranil is said to be Herman Gunratne, Presidential Advisor, who was caught shooting at Ranil supporters. Due to strong UNP protest Herman has been arrested but it is said that the gun he has had with him has been changed. Herman will of course be bailed out and released like Duminda. Read today’s Lanka E News story. The conspiracy is out. Mara is behind it all they say.
This story will tell us that our ‘Political Analyst,’Dayan has lost the plot

The intellectually dishonest spin doctor sees no evil in MR but is critical of RW in virtually every one of his articles. The “elected” Maharaja whose ambassador he was and the incorporated Maharaja who fund and support Sagith,DJ’s political messiah are the main reasons for UNP’s set back. The learned DR should read Mangala’s article which appears in these columns and enlighten himself of the political reality.

    • 0
      0

He is trying to pave the way Premadasa Junior to take over UNP.

I wonder why the learnt doctor seems to be not seeing anything wrong in ruling murderous regime. No matter even if MR openly accuses him of supporting a powerful NGO which DJ repeatedly goes on denying.

My question is what this so called pundit – political analyst seems to see only one side. He is no care that Premadasa Junior having no adequate political exp, but he should be the one to lead UNP ?

The ‘slow death of democracy’ commenced whem Sarath N Silva pronounced that “cross-overs” in parliament are legal.
In the earlier era, there were by-elections,when any MP quit his party.
Such by-elections gave those who voted for that MP earlier, the power to approve or reject his action.
MR who preached human rights and democracy saw his chance and ‘enticed’ 17 MPs to his side.
    Rest is history.
The UNP turncoats cum traiters gave dictatorial powers to MR,sealed and delivered via the 18th Amendment for which they voted, even without knowing its contents.
Now the UNPers are quarreling among themselves to share/salvage any spoils from the corpse of the UNP.

The collapse of the UNP began firstly with the assasination of President Premadasa..and the subsequent elimination of the UNP political leadership by the LTTE… they strategically executed all their plans since 1993….today the LTTE is no more but have given birth to an influential Transitional Govt filled with educated people who are pro active to their cause whilst the Sinhala Govt is in the hands of IDIOTS who are nevertheless carrying the torch that lit by Prabakaran.
In fact MR is living the legacy of the LTTE strategy by systematically eliminating the opposition in the Sinhala majority so that he could ensure the establishment of his family dynasty in the South which in his own assesment is better than nothing by trying to liven the Democracy …

Secondly ..the crossover of Mr Karu Jayasuriya with 17 members in 2005 ..how much he was paid or has taken no one will know .but he provided stability the MR Govt that would have collapsed in 2 years. Yet MR could not uphold democracy proving that he is a Leader by par excellence. The subject of LEADERSHIP is alien to him as the Bandaranayake SLFP never developed a single person to takeover Leadership of the Party. MR was an accident and thanks to Prabhakaran. As a a result the subject LEADERSHIP is alien to him..so ho goes by what he has seen…the power now revolves in the Family as he has seen and it is all over the Country.

The old guard of the SLFP are near the grave and for MR they are a spent force…he has chosen the path of survival than living by buying the young well groomed educated young people from the opposition….today he is ably supported by 67 crossovers of the UNP who are young and few more young will be in their camp within the next few months …It is clearly seen that he has lost the grip of the Country internationally and locally…we have failed in everything…

Any sensible person can understand the path that Sri Lanka is heading….within the next 2 -3 years the Country will be ruled by ..South MR Council….NPC…EPC….and in 10 years from now on i.e. 2023 Sri Lanka will be an ethnically devided Country Thanks to Prabakaran master strategy MR became the President. …

the collapse of the UNP has nothing to do with Ranil …as much as the collapse of the Democracy has nothing to with MR….it is the inherent IDIOCY and the CONFUSION of the Sinhala society that you and I belong.

      Mr R.Dias,

You have spoken the ultimate truth with only a minor arguments against it from my part. It is exactly this ultimate defeat that RW tried to prevent by bridging the good relationship gap between Tamils and Sinhalese. The Sinhalese idiots have now been reduced to ashes and what they are left with to do is to salvage something from the wreckage using policies followed by Ranil Wickramasinghe. The way forward to getting rid of MARA and restoring good governance, democracy and above all giving proper education to uneducated racist Sinhala and Buddhist bastards.

So long as MR uses his political strategies to stick on to ‘Mahinda Chintanya Idiri Dekma’ he can be sure to win at presidential or any other election. It’s a shame that losers coin new words like ‘computer jilmart’ to cover-up the rejection of their policies by the voter. Instead of accepting their shortcomings, they accuse MR of being a dictator again to cover up their inability.

The truth about the adult franchise in Sri Lanka is, it’s only now we have least impersonations, least tampering and least violence at elections ever in Sri Lanka. Don’t take my word, just cast a vote at any poling booth and observe the surroundings and then cruise by several but randomly selected polling stations anywhere in the country. You will see that there are no barge-in to polling booths by ruffians of politicians, or lifting or stuffing the ballot boxes and etc.

Don’t forget, in the 1982 presidential election under the unp watch, the vote of the main opposition candidate Kobbekaduwa had been cast by an impersonator. Remember, the undressing of a woman supporter of unp in public at the infamous Viamba (NW) PC elections under Kumaratunga watch. Does such things happen now? No. Then what more proof than a current election to show MR is not a fraudster or a dictator like the rulers of yesteryear.

It is those who do not like MR’s nationalistic outlook make up the adverse stories.

Now a segment of the UNP is resorting to the same tactics of Mervin the Vermin. Use of thuggery to stop a peaceful protest is not what a party that claims to be ultra democratic should resort to.

    DJ,

CT has exposed Sajith Premadasa’s LSE degree as something awarded under strange circumstances without him meeting the necessary conditions for the degree. As someone who repeatedly alluded to his ‘LSE degree’ to make the case that SP is intelligent enough, you will need to confront that issue in print.

And SP hasn’t been able to outmaneuver RW within the UNP, so how will he be able to beat the Rajapaksa juggernaut? What is your answer to the charge from many people that SP will turn out into yet another dictator?

As Shyamon Jayasinghe argued elsewhere on CT, I think the UNP should find someone on the Sinhalese side who is a bit like Justice Wigneswaran. In other words, that person could come from outside the UNP and should be nationalistic-Buddhist enough to appease the core of the Sinhalese polity, but should earn the respect of a broader segment of the population, including minorities, by his pragmatism, integrity, education, charisma, eloquence, etc.

That person should agree to curtailing presidential powers as well. I don’t think reverting to the Westminster model is necessary, as the folks around Sobitha Thero demand, but presidential power should be circumscribed via constitutional amendments.

It is said that RW wants to remain party leader. That shouldn’t be a problem as long as the UNP fields an electable candidate. When JRJ was president, it was one Panditharatne who was the party leader.

      Degree you may forget.
It is his greedyness and respectlessness.. that matter above everything.

Bugger should know that his father intentionally killed over 50k youth in 89 insurgency. In a BBC interview, he was questioned why you killed JVP leaders, there he answered ” they killed our people why not I must also kill theirs” like that… meaning.. as if he is the only leader who openly killed own folks. I have got that audio cassette recorded by BBC sender in early 90ties.

Where had this MR knowall from SRILANKA been to that time, I mean particular Jayathilaka ?

Dayan Jayathilake’s all this analysis is to propose Sajith as the Opposition leader.

What a difficult brainstorming. Why he can not remember any one else. Are you asking a minister post. Church will love it.

He is proposing the same old guard. Sri Lanka will be the same. Only difference will be changing chairs.

    Comments Policy
    DISCUSSION GUIDELINES

The Colombo Telegraph provides a opportunity for readers who wish to discuss content we publish, or debate issues more generally. Our aim is to ensure this platform is inclusive and safe.

There are 10 simple guidelines which we expect all participants to abide by, all of which directly inform our approach to moderation (detailed below). These apply across the site, while moderation decisions are also informed by the context in which comments are made. We receive a lot of comments and aim to moderate them all within 24 hours of submission.

    1. We welcome debate and dissent, but personal attacks (on authors, other users or any individual), persistent trolling and mindless abuse will not be tolerated. The key to maintaining the website as an inviting space is to focus on intelligent discussion of topics.

    2. We acknowledge criticism of the articles we publish, but will not allow persistent misrepresentation of the Colombo Telegraph and our journalists/contributors to be published on our website. For the sake of robust debate, we will distinguish between constructive, focused argument and smear tactics.

    3. We understand that people often feel strongly about issues debated on the site, but we will consider removing any content that others might find extremely offensive or threatening. Please respect other people’s views and beliefs and consider your impact on others when making your contribution.

    4. We reserve the right to redirect or curtail conversations which descend into flame-wars based on ingrained partisanship or generalisations. We don’t want to stop people discussing topics they are enthusiastic about, but we do ask users to find ways of sharing their views that do not feel divisive, threatening or toxic to others.

    5. We will not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia or other forms of hate-speech, or contributions that could be interpreted as such. We recognise the difference between criticising a particular government, organisation, community or belief and attacking people on the basis of their race, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age.

    6. We will remove any content that may put us in legal jeopardy, such as potentially libellous or defamatory postings.

    7. We will remove any posts that are obviously commercial or otherwise spam-like. Our aim is that this site should provide a space for people to interact with our content and each other, and we actively discourage commercial entities passing themselves off as individuals, in order to post advertising material or links. This may also apply to people or organisations who frequently post propaganda or external links without adding substantively to the quality of the discussion on the website.

    8. Keep it relevant. We know that some conversations can be wide-ranging, but if you post something which is unrelated to the original topic (“off-topic”) then it may be removed, in order to keep the thread on track. This also applies to queries or comments about moderation, which should not be posted as comments.

    9. Be aware that you may be misunderstood, so try to be clear about what you are saying, and expect that people may understand your contribution differently than you intended. Remember that text isn’t always a great medium for conversation: tone of voice (sarcasm, humour and so on) doesn’t always come across when using words on a screen. You can help to keep the comment section open to all viewpoints by maintaining a reasonable tone, even in unreasonable circumstances.

    10. The platform is ours, but the conversation belongs to everybody. We want this to be a welcoming space for intelligent discussion, and we expect participants to help us achieve this by notifying us of potential problems and helping each other to keep conversations inviting and appropriate. If you spot something problematic in comment section, please report it. When we all take responsibility for maintaining an appropriate and constructive environment, the debate itself is improved and everyone benefits.

    In short:

    – If you act with maturity and consideration for other users, you should have no problems.
    – Don’t be unpleasant. Demonstrate and share the intelligence, wisdom and humour we know you possess.
    – Take some responsibility for the quality of the conversations in which you’re participating. Help make this an intelligent place for discussion and it will be.

Thilina is correct. But you pay peanuts you get monkeys!! The author of this article says; Mr Wickremesinghe is the Government’s Minister of Opposition Affairs. So he is attacking personally, isn’t he?

It is all the man DJ is now exagerating for his own sake.

CT readers would not want to see it. He could better be neutral with his views since they are just false speculations to mud RW. Recent election victories do show that thuggery is rather goverining under current regime. They dont leave space to any form of opponents. THis was the final view of the UN human right commissioner following her one week of human rights facts finding mission – fearlessly calling MR regime as becoming very authoritarian rule… was she a joker ? is she only dealing with lanken issues ? no.
DJ is shaking being unable to call a spade a spade. Bora diye malu banawa. His academic credentials are shattered now, if he would bring this kind of articles again the opposition – MOTIVE is petty gains…sadly.

      Thilina Rajapakse,

No wonder you are writing this bullshit because part of you is “Rajapakse”, a term tantamount to genocide, war crimes, white van abductions and killings, plundering and stealing, kleptomania, treasure hunting, igniting racial conflicts and blasphemy, nepotism, bribery, corruption and inefficiency, shamelessness, inferiority complex and megalomania and you name it and they are it! There are innumerable anonymous entities commenting here in CT but no one in his wildest imagination put on him/herself this loathsome name “Rajapaksha” which fact illustrate the true nature and guise of you-a bloody pimp doing laundry work for the criminal Rajapaksha family in the country. The word “Rajapaksha” is now anathema to vast majority in the country. There is a growing and simmering anger, hate and antagonism towards the despotic kleptocritic “Rajapaksha” rogue family. CT’s comments policies and ethics are not relevant to rogues and murderers because they do not honour an iota of law, peace, religion, ethics, decency and civility. A simple example would drive the point home: Rajapaksha family of bastards wrote the script for the “Chase Ranil” pretest march and aided and abetted in its conduct. Had the UNP honouring sprit of democracy remained silent the Shiral, Maithree, Sajaith et al fuckers would have created a totally deformed and fake populist opinion in the country against Ranil and UNP and done huge damage to the image of UNP. Therefore the attack on the marching mob of bloody bastards by real UNPers is perfectly correct and warranted! They saved democracy by attacking a herd of bum kissers and asshole and testicle lickers of Rajapakshas. And we are doing the same thing here by relentless and fiercely crushing any son of Rajapaksha bitches because the country, the democracy, the protector goddess of law and sanity in the world demands that we do it lest this country is totally and utterly devoured by Rajapakshs juggernaut! And very funny things happen when we do that. An iguanified Rajapakish creature draws out from its underground cavity and talk about comment policies and civilization! Holy shit! Gone are the days before the Rajapaksha fuckers waylaid and snatched power by bribing Velupilla fucker when we used to express ourselves with human qualities and timbre. But alas, after these Rajapaksha animals plundered the arena we were forced to arm ourselves with verbal daggers, swords, crocodiles and dogs! Now were are barking at and biting Rajapakshas and anyone who seem even remotely connected to the bastard family!

        You are dead right.

I am not sure the people would have due knowledge to differentiate the skills of RW.

“The word “Rajapaksha” is now anathema to vast majority in the country “

        a) British Tourist was Murderd – DNA test (for us molecular biologists it take just 30 min or little longer with all interpretations) took over 18 months – even after such a long time, not yet – a conviction made against the key accused – MR close confidiant

        b) Mervin^s activities are uncontrollable – people^s agony not seeing MR as President taking no PROPER actions even if MERVIN was the key accused for the killing of Waragoda MP and several other abusive activities specially in Kelaniya area

        c) Mathale grave^ related investigations should long have been finished if the MR regime made wholehearted efforts towards

        d) Rathupaswala killing through mediation of govt forces to control peaceful protests carried out by people asking for clean water (the cheapest food item for them) – stayed further unsettled

        e) In general, MR regime dont take serious with crime investigations – incl. the killing of Baratha – verdicts is NO means acceptable to anyone, but to Rajas.

Karu Jayasuriya divided the party. He would not be a credible uniter. And Sajit Premadasa to “recharge the UNP batteries, renovate, re-brand and energise”? You can’t be serious.

Good move. Wonderful move. A master stroke. HE HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!! No white vans. White vans all cancelled now with the support for Karu and Sajith. Every madman and mad woman can see what this sane man is doing. He is a master strategist who puts kautilya to shame.

I wonder by what convoluted logic that DJ assumes that Sajith the pseudo-graduate is a better Presidential candidate than Karu.

Sajith is shallow, dishonest and cultivating votes at the grass-roots by doling out money to temples and other “worthy causes”. Every village idiot knows that his main intention is image building for a future thrust to leadership!

Sajith the politician-in-a-hurry will be an utter and absolute failure if he tries to aspire above his present station in the party.

In my view, as a credible common Presidential candidate Rev Sobitha appears to be our best bet at this time.

Ranil is of course muddying the waters with his street thugs (with or without government support). This will not help his cause. In the process he has also exposed the hapless Mangala as a bungling co-conspirator.

DJ may not be a member of a NGO, but with his invidious suggestions/proposals he certainly qualifies to head one on behalf of MR!

Whenever I remind Sajith – I only reechoe the word – “Dugee duppathkama”. What steps he has taken within last 12 years to make the people clear that he had guts to do so etc…. are there any examples ?

Leaving his GSQ similar (just one year completion at any university) degree levels, whether he has all qualifications to represent the nation.

Why don’t you criticize the content of the article without personal insults. You should be able to argue in a decent way.You all criticize Mervyn, but you seem to speak the same language.

Ranil is like Bashir Al-Assad and UNP is like Syria. President Rajapakse is so smart that he has purchased every key individual in the UNP, at one time including Karu Jayasuriya for a period of time. I am sure Ranil and Sajith are directly and indirectly purchased by the President. Ranil gets perks from the President and Sajith’s mom is a Presidential Advisor. What more do you want?

UNP has gone to dogs and I agree with Dayan that Karu Jayasuriya can revive the party. Karu should contest as the common candidate at the next Presidential election, strongly supported by Sajith. Ranil should retire from politics. Once the Presidential election is won, Sajith should be appointed as the Prime Minister after the next election and Karu should change the constitution abolishing Presidential system and reverting to a two tier system with a house of commons and a upper house. This mechanism would prove to all of us that Karu is a genuine person (although he does not have the grass root support Sajith has) and Sajith can prove to us that he is not in the hip pockets of the President.

I have to ask a question, Mrs. Premadasa was not an adviser even to late Mr. Premadasa, how can President Rajapakse appoint her as a Presidential Adviser, what advice does she give the President?

Dr.Dayan should offer his service to any honest, respectable, qualified, leaders, irrespective of their Race, status and Religion.

Dr.Dayan should work only for those who know the value of truth, those who keep their promises, liberty, democracy and justice.

Dr. Dayan should not offer his service to a dis-respectful thug leaders, false pride morons who constantly lie to the world. Those who disgrace our country to the world and those who are selfish coward pig eating shit.

Dr.Dayan should fight for people’s justice and for truth, freedom, democracy and their rights.

Also Dr.Dayan should work with the International community to bring justice to oppressed, suppressed and to those voiceless people.

Finally Dr.Dayan should start his own NGO or should affiliate with an NGO to hear his opinion and voice herd to the outside world.

          If I may add you..

if you call Dr. Dayan .. that is actually not accurate.. either Dr. D. Jayathilaka or Dr. Jayathilaka. This is the style that average lankens have been used to in SL. They are used to call Prefixes with first names which is often seen and totally inaccurate internationally. The same is with medical degree titles- lanken MBBS holders are used to name Dr. XXX or so even without having completed DOCTORATEs. I think only ones those who have earned Dr. Titles by WORKING for them going through their own dissertations have the rights to add their titles to the names, while others not. All these are strictly handled in Germany, France, Austria and non-English speaking EU countries than in the UK. Of course, any wrong examples done by UK is considered as examples in Srilanka.
