The Void In The Nation’s Heart

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“After the war in 2009, society became divided into two. There was hate propaganda on the internet. Sinhalese got together and wanted to boycott Muslims shops… This religious division was used by Sahran to this advantage. He used this to turn people onto his side.” ~ Nilantha Jayawardana, former head of SIS (Lankadeepa – 30.7.2020)

In early November 2019, a 45 year old man in Northwest Sri Lanka sought divine assistance to find a wife. The intermediary was a former labourer who became a godman after his body was invaded by the spirit of a dead monk. Claiming that planetary influences were impeding the supplicant’s path to marriage, he undertook negate these via a magical ritual.

On the appointed night, a large hole was dug at the end of the supplicant’s garden. The supplicant was told to place all the gold in his possession inside a doll and lie down in the hole with the doll on his chest. As he bent over the hole to light a ritual lamp, the godman killed him with a blow to the head. After burying the body in the hole, the godman fled with the gold which he promptly pawned (to purchase a three-wheeler). The story came to light when the police discovered the body on November 11th and caught the godman.

“Blind believers are mentally blind despite their intelligence and education,” wrote eminent rationalist Abraham T Kovoor (Begone Godmen!). The victim in the above story was a lecturer at a leading technical college. An educated man then, possibly someone who studied science subjects for his A Level exam. His extreme credulity reveals the pervasive power of superstition, and the self-destructive lengths to which it drives desperate people.

Around the time the police uncovered the body of the lecturer murdered by a godman, another practitioner of arcane arts went to the Naga Lokaya (Cobra World) and returned with 14 relics of the Buddha. This performance was presided over by no less a personality than the Chief Incumbent of the famed Kelaniya temple who claims the Delhi University and the Sorbonne University as his alma maters. The monk, an ardent supporter of Candidate Gotabaya, hailed the appearance of relics as a miracle presaging the advent of a good leader for the country in 2020.

The two incidents, in confluence, are seminal in understanding the current Lankan reality. They reveal the nexus between mindless piety and self-destructive credulity and how the resulting mindset can be turned into a deadly political weapon.

The supplicant who dug his own grave was the Lankan electorate in microcosm.

During the presidential election campaign, Candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa had one media conference. When asked about government finance and national debt, he had no answer to give. Either he didn’t understand the question or he didn’t have the foggiest notion as to how those key issues should be handled. A wise electorate might have taken heed. One that was on a mythic-high barely noticed.

As President, Gotabaya Rajapaksas is the technocratic-philosopher king dispensing advice across the spectrum, from Central Bank economists to Wild Life officials, even as the economy tanks and the forests burn. Whether on these or any other subject, the Rajapaksas are deaf to expert opinions. For example, in July 2020, the Association of Medical Specialists, an independent body consisting of about 1300 medical specialists in the government sector, warned that community transmission of Covid-19 was either imminent or has already begun. The president of the association, Senior Consulted Surgeon, Dr.L.A.Ranasinghe, said, “Expanding PCR testing of at risk groups and random community testing would be crucial. Active contact tracing and, if necessary, even limited lock downs should also be implemented without any hesitation” (Daily Mirror – 16.7.2020).

Had that warning been heeded, the current wave of infection could have been avoided. But the warning was ignored because by that time the government had declared the battle against the pandemic won. When the reality of a new wave became irrefutable, the government caused a total disconnect between science and the pandemic. The resultant void was filled with miracle workers. First it was the faux-doctor Eliyantha White with his Kunadalini power and magical pots. Then came a carpenter-turned-godman with a concoction made to a recipe given to him by Goddess Kali.

Cranks do appear with crazy cures in epidemic times. During the first Black Death epidemic, the miracle cures touted included live chicken, human faeces, and crushed emeralds. What is singular here is the government backing accorded to the godman and his Kali Concoction. By the man’s own admission, he has no medical training whatsoever. He owes his cure not to a traditional medicine or a new discovery but divine intervention. The conflict here is not between two systems of medicine, Western and Ayurvedic, but between science and superstition, between commonsense and credulity.

During the Presidential election campaign, Candidate Gotabaya and elder brother Mahinda attended the Shanthikarmavedinge Jathika Sammelanaya, a gathering of kapuwas, exorcists, astrologers etc, at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre. Candidate Gotabaya’s Manifesto promises to protect and foster these practices. According to the political column in a Sinhala weekly, soon after the parliamentary election, Mahinda Rajapaksa advised a former private secretary to Chamal Rajapaksa, to contest for the Basnayake Nilame post of the Kataragama Devalaya. “This is a place a lot of work can be done,” the PM was quoted saying. Gods, demons, spirits, the Rajapaksas neither scorn nor spare any of these in their quest for power.

The Rajapaksas weaponised superstition to win two elections. Post-election, superstition has become an important governance tool. The Kali concoction is a ruse to lull a desperate nation into a false sense of security, even as the pandemic rages almost unchecked.

Burying Reason; Immolating Peace

Prof. Malik Peiris, the Lankan born pathologist and virologist, was the first scientist to isolate the SARS virus. He was also one of the first scientists to warn about Covid-19 turning into a global pandemic (in a Feb 2020 paper written with Leo LM Poon: Emergence of a novel human coronavirus threatening human health). On whether burials cause Covid-19 to spread via water, his answer is a clear no. When it come to the Covid-19 dead, burials are as safe as cremations. His opinion tallies with both the known science, WHO recommendations, and international practices.

A pandemic is a health emergency. At such times, it is the responsibility of the government and the people to listen to the counsel of science. If science says cremation is harmful, then all bodies should be buried, whatever the religious sensitivities of Buddhists or Hindus. If science says burial is harmful, Muslims and Christians must comply with that. the clincher here is not religious rights but scientific knowledge. When science is emphatic that both burials and cremations are safe, both should be equally permitted. Not to do so is cruel, irrational and stupid.

Had the government been motivated by public good, it would have acted according to the known science. But in banning burials, the motive was purely politics.  That is why when eminent scientists debunk the burial-myth, the government, instead of changing the regulation, clings to it even tighter. In any case, a government that promotes the Kali Concoction has no moral right to invoke science when it comes to the burial issue.

From the time of the first Covid-19 wave, the government tried to cast Muslims in the role of virus-spreaders. On March 29th the army commander said, “Yesterday a patient was discovered from Akurana… Then we discovered another person from Puttlam. He has also associated with a lot of people. He is a Muslim. In both places they are Muslims”. Several ministers got into the act too. The scapegoating still continues, waxing and waning, depending on the need.

The burial issue too becomes comprehensible in this context. The purpose is to inflame Muslim anger and fan Sinhala fears, each exacerbating the other in an endless cycle. It is a good way to divert public attention from the government’s innumerable failures and to prop up the Rajapaksas’ Sinhala base. This is nothing new, but a repetition of the tactics the Siblings used during the second Mahinda Rajapaksa presidency.

In his testimony before the Easter Bombing Commission, senior DIG and former head of the SIS Nilantha Jayawardana spoke about the post-war divide between Sinhala and Muslim communities. “Statements of hate which divides society was published on the internet. This was a great blow to the religious coexistence of this country. It was an opening for international terrorism into Sri Lanka” (Lankadeepa – July 30, 2020)

This new Sinhala-Muslim divide didn’t happen automatically. It was deliberately created. The Bodu Bala Sena exploded into the political scene with the launching of anti-Halal campaign in February 2013. The threatening of Muslim shops began in tandem. For example, “At least 50 Muslim shop owners in Narammala in the Kurunegala District, have received death threats by mail. They have been warned to close their shops by March 31st of face death….” (Colombo Gazette – 17.2.2013). Gotabaya Rajapaksa hobnobbed with the incendiary monks of the BBS, heaping public praise on them.

The plan to replace Tiger terrorism with Islamic terrorism as the new national enemy was so unleashed – and would eventually lead to the barbaric Easter Sunday Massacre.

Hatred breeds hatred. Desperation and despair can open the door to violence. The plan is to push the Muslims to go the way the Tamils went, a long bloody road ending in a new Nandikadal.

What could be a more a more effective raison d’être for a Rajapaksa dynasty than a total war against Islamic terrorism?

Of the innumerable lives that will be lost as a result, of the destruction that will befall the country, little thought would be expended.

Some months ago, Mahinda Rajapaksa promised to ban cattle slaughter, to much fanfare. The promise remained a promise. Last week, his son, parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, ceremoniously opened a massive meat processing plant in Katunayake. Where will the meat for the plant come from? Will cows be spared or not? This is how the Rajapaksas use Sinhala credulity.

It is the same with the burial issue. The Rajapaksas probably don’t know and don’t care to know whether burials are really dangerous or not. But it is a good way to keep the Muslim enemy in the play and the Sinhalese blinded by irrational fears.

Deadly Games

Days before the presidential election of 2019, a famous preacher monk began a fast unto death against the MCC agreement. The monk was not a rabble-rouser, but one famed for piety. His fast therefore carried immense weight and helped legitimise the SLPP lie of the MCC being a tool of separatism. Post-election, the monk admitted that he hadn’t read the agreement (which was in the public domain). He fasted not because he knew that the agreement was dangerous but because someone convinced him it was so. It was a perfect example of how Sinhala-Buddhism in general and monks in particular were harnessed to drive the Rajapaksa chariot across the winning line.

“By its very nature, the Sangha cannot be a power. It can only be a handmaid of power,” Prof. HL Seneviratne points out in The Work of Kings. One year into Gotabaya-Mahinda rule, the truth of this statement is evident. The monks may have thought they were using the Rajapaksas as a vehicle, but in actuality, the Rajapaksas were using the monks as horse-power. The battle over the 20th Amendment was a watershed moment. The monks thought they’d be able to bend the Rajapaksas to their will. Eventually it was the monks who were compelled to bow before Rajapaksa power.

The Rajapaksas won’t rule as the monks want them to (except in instances where their interests coincide), but they know the importance of keeping the monks quiescent. Here, force has only a limited value. Since even the placatory promise of a new constitution is just another Kali Concoction (with the 20th Amendment, the Rajapaksas have almost everything they need), other diversions are needed. And when it comes to diversions, what is better than the Muslim enemy?

Already efforts are underway to create a new Kuragala/Muhudu Maha Viharaya in Devanagala. Once that palls, other issues can be manufactured. Or the successors of Zahran Hashim (birthed and nurtured by the ongoing anti-Muslim hysteria) will come to the Rajapaksas’ rescue with another destructive and self-destructive act of violence.

The attempts to inflame Muslim anger and despair are happening at a time of a deadly leadership vacuum in Muslim politics and Muslim community. When the government won the 20th Amendment with the backing of SLMC and ACMC parliamentarians, it effectively obliterated those two Muslim parties. The question is who or what will fill the resulting void? Will it be voices of reason and moderation? Or will it be Muslim versions of the Rajapaksas? The answer may well decide the future of not just Muslims but all Lankans.

Principles aside, enlightened self-interest demands that Sinhalese and Tamils reach out to Muslims, and build an alliance of moderates committed to the ideal of a pluralist and tolerant Sri Lanka. That is the only way to prevent the Rajapaksas from heaping a new dissolution on this much bloodied land.

There’s not much time left for comments on the article below: I intend spilling all the beans about the corruption in the Anglican schools. Some of it pretty controversial, but most seem to ignore such issues. If time catches up on me, I shall shift to the other article, where also it would have relevance, but not here.

        Dear SM,
        :
Thanks, unfortunately, I did not find your E-mail in the directed link.

However, I will add my thoughts about the two aritcles you mentioned, in next few hours.

Please take good care of you. We in EUROPE have every chance to protect ourselves, but srilankens caught by Rjapakshe criminals today would not have chance to even think of a vaccine, so long they would not realize the need if at all people s anxities be taken away. Right at the moment, what srilanka needs is to protect own people, by providing them a vaccine. Instead, they the leadership has been playing with LOCAL products which would not help achieving anything near to what anyone could gain through a vaccine.

              PART ONE

              .
You’re right. When I went to the place where I had placed my email address, it was there, but that was because I was logged in to CT. There were neither “Likes” nor dislikes.
              .
I logged off, and then looked. That message was not there. Note that the comments above this have all got “Likes” (and “Dislikes”, too). The “Dislikes” have obviously been inserted by persons who don’t like this “News-site” being used as “Social Media”.

              PART TWO
              .
Why so much bold in PART ONE? Carelessness by me.
              .
If you make an extra-careful search using your google search engine, it will still be possible for you to find my email. However, as I get older, I become less important, and soon even that will not be possible. Facebook is the accepted way to get through to most people, but unfortunately, I never go there – although I have a page on it.
              .
Note that if very important people display their regular, personal email address it will soon fill up with spam, and will soon be rendered useless. Note also, that I have just proved to you that I’m not very important.
              .
I hope that this message of mine will be displayed, because what I’m saying is that frivolous and non-legitimate uses of this comments page on CT has to be stopped. I think that you will agree, but when the rules work to our disadvantage, we protest.
              .
              Sounds familiar?

There is a song sung for sinhala buddhists (srilanken buddhists, may be their thoughts and minds are controlled not by true teachings of the buddha, but by falslely interpreted Mahanwanse) – I reminded that today not once several times.

With return of Rajaakshes, what became better than prior to Nov 2019.
      .
Good governance govt was caught by Rajapakshes thugs as our GURU (Late Rev. Sobitha THero) predicted it at the begining of good govenance.; having closely studied the estranged behaviour of POLONNARUWA donkey. It became even clearer after that 52 day FAKE govt.- the kind of betrayals were no common since Independence in SL. Now looking back, everyone knows, leaders without leadership skills and the due knowledge obtained for decades, cant achieved the little. Gotabaya has proved it wihtin his first year itself. Today, ANARCHY is governing in the incumbent govt.
However, paving the way former criminals to twist the mindset of the majority begann because of silly performances of POlONNARUWA DONKEY. Since then, Sirisena was not the same man, we elected in January 2015. He behaved himself as if his profile was no different to current day DHAMMIKA BANDARA. Kegalle Dhammika bandara became known to srilankens through his ” paniya being produced by Kali amma s recept”:

You will never grasph the slightest. That is sure for us. Our cry is ballige puthas suck the last drop of the blood for their political survivial. People are stupid … they know nothing much … but line up to have ” pani beema even made out of asuchi, if said, that would help them”. …. look at those people lining up in Kegalle. Most of them dont have brains even similar to that of MAFIA boss .. criminal Mahinda Rajakashe.
        :
Just imagine, last 4.5 years where Mahinda Rajakashes and their criminals were out of active politics, people in this country never heard that much of WITCHERY because even if POLONNARUWE donkey is the donkey to have paved the way Rascals to return, he had good thing, the bugger never repsected SUPERSTION to the manenr Medamulana rascals are made to believe. Patta pal horas would go after witchery… today .. those who respect FACTs and figures would not care much about invisible forces.

My year end wishes are to a country with Rajapakshes being punished either by divine forces of any other sources. Wait and see, TRUTHS will succeed now or later.

        .
They dont care much about the truths or facts about anything. They would line up to follow the other. This is well known to Rajapakshes as no others. Why people are stupidier toda than few decades ago is connected with TV channel mafia than any other media streams.
        :
Headline news items of TV DERANA are just hear says or fabricated unfiltered stories by Dilith Jayaweera et al. So long Dilitha Jayaweera is the condom supporter of Gotler et al, pimping politics of Rajaakshe clan remain as before. MR did respect some norms, but GR et al donot seem to even respect BUDDHIST clergy today.
        :
There are reports that MONKS get caught by BRAWLS across the country today. WITHIN LAST WEEKS, few murders of BUDDHIST MONKS are reported. Prisoners are attacked recalling the past prior to 2015. What is today improved, is almost nothing. What SIRISENA as president achieved is remembered by masses today. No fuel concessions or whatsoever other concessions are given to the people, instead the FAKE ROYAL born to destroy the nation sound to be ENJOYing the tax payers funds.

You mean the mobs that stoned, looted, and attacked, Muslims homes, shops, and businesses, were targeting ONLY Wahabi’s?
How many Wahabi’s were attacked here?
“After its rally the BBS drove into Dharga Town chanting anti-Muslim slogans.[22][26] Local residents started throwing stones at the BBS convoy which resulted in violent clashes erupting between the two groups.[27][28] Eyewitnesses reported Muslim homes and a mosque being stoned.[22] Muslims were pulled off buses and assaulted whilst the Buddhist mob threw Molotov cocktails, burning and looting Muslim shops and homes.[22][29][30] Muslim residents were forced to flee from their homes and seek shelter in mosques and community centres.[31] There was rioting in Beruwala as well.[32]

You once typed in these columns the all powerful victorious Sri Lankan armed forces is ever ready to protect Sinhala/Buddhists from any type of internal or external, enemies, natural disasters, ……….

Despite the armed forces are being empowered and armed to their teeth with Drone, Fighter jets, Artillery, Field Gun, Chemical weapons, Floating armoury, Air Defence system, ….. what is it stopping the 400.000 Rana Viruses and their 15,000 single handed generals from fighting and saving the innocent people from Corona?

Kamal and Shavendra constantly boast, to those who fought the LTTE and won the all powerful Terrorists Corona virus is nothing. Both first started chanting this mantra in Feb/Mar 2020. What is happening to them?

why you say like that ? Are srilanken Muslims not srilanken CITIZENS ?

If you ask them to move out of sinhala majority areas, .. the very should be valid for the sinhalaya and tamils living in Muslim areas. As I know, one law to all srilankens was the slogan of ballige putha Rajakashes when making every efforts to grab the power.

      GATAM,
After LTTE Tamil terrorism was defeated, large number of Tamils from North and East have moved to South and work without facing any problem from Sinhalayo. Muslims are scattered all over the country and live with Sinhalayo without facing problems. Unfortunately, there is a tiny minority among Tamil and Muslim communities who do not like to see the three communities live in peace as one nation called Sri Lankans because their political survival depends on promoting racism and extremism. Also there are invisible hands behind these people who use them to implement their agenda. These racists and extremists try to mislead their communities by depicting Sinhala Buddhists as their enemy and they are the saviors. It is up to Tamil and Muslim communities not to get misled and foster harmony among communities to live as Sri Lankans. Those who do not want to live as one nation in a Unitary State are free to leave this country and allow the rest to live in peace.

The three communities were living together until you started your tactics of intimidation to chase out the Tamils from the South to North.
After LTTE was defeated your army started terrorizing Tamils in North, in earnest. Tamils had little choice but to move South. Living together is not a problem; living among in a unitary state is.

That was the case with British India too. Did it work? No. If India was not split into 3 it would be the biggest battlefield today and a den of all sorts of discrimination and riots.

It is the greed of all 3 ethnic groups that has cursed SL. There is no future for SL without dividing it.

I’m not working for anyone. Any sane person can see SL’s 3 tribes have nothing in common other than blame each other, racism and resentment.

Donkey Sirisena stays mum, because he is under threat today. Now or later bugger should be landed in a prison cell even if his direct involvment saved the bums of Rajapakshe high criminals.

There are atleast 50% of the country would not want to hurt anyone. Nevertheless most of them have no idea about voting power. As Mr SM made every effort to educate the people shortly before the elections, what he achieved was nothing. Like the blue flies being found on a heap of garbage/cadava, majority of srilankens (regardless of their race/religion or education), they would not realize the rational thinking. When you look back, Raja’s initial strategy,to break up the Yahapalanaya by upsetting the Sira-Ranil partnership, was the beginning. Strangely both sides played ball with Rajas. Ranil covertly as was his wont while Sira openly, knowing no better. So now they are freed of their misdeeds.
They used Viyathmaga – only three or four of Raja’s lackeys benefitted – while their policies were abandoned.
Same with the monks. Having got the 20A in hand, they need little or nothing now.
At present, SJB or the minorities are rendered powerless and virtually against the wall.
The Biz community is reasonably happy with reduced “taxes and interest rates.”
Only an enlightened strong leadership, with good intentions and able to get over the Rajas propaganda machine supported by its media lackeys, is the only hope. Most importantly the stranglehold by the self-serving media support.
……An uphill task to be sure.

I agree with the writer that the Rajapaksas are using Gods, demons, spirits, and the monks to stay in power. But I also think that while they’re wicked, they’re also stupid. As I said before, their intellectual development hasn’t kept pace with the rapid rise of their political power and wealth. You can win power and make money in a jiffy, but you need to put in some effort over a period of time to develop your brain. They didn’t have the time or the inclination. And now they find themselves in a situation where they have to save the country from a danger that is much more deadlier and much more elusive than Prabhakaran. Poor chaps … they’re having panic attacks, and I think their stupidity is getting the better of them. The Rajapaksas are having a wishful thinking moment.

    GATAM,
I think you have now understood the problem. Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalism divide this Nation. Majority Sinhala should understand that their political masters use the Buddhism to rob this nation’s wealth. If you look back those who ruled after the so called independence, all of them are Converted Christian background and Indian background (Nayake families). Why our President Gotabaya have to leave this island to America instead of China. Why the 20th amendment brought to bring back an American citizen brother Basil. Why can’t he give up American citizen even now?
So far no one found who was behind the Easter Bombing. All commissions and judiciary are there to clear their corruptions, bribes, murders but none to find the truth. Gota claimed that he won the war but what is the truth? Gota claimed that he won the Corona but what is the truth? The people of Srilanka are kept in dark, kept in fear by these masters all the time. Search for the truth.

      Ajith,
Dividing this nation was the work of Brits who used their infamous ‘Divide and Rule’ policy in their colonies. They divided the Nation and an academic in Cambridge University wrote a book called ‘Ceylon: A Divided Nation’.
Racism and separatism was also introduced by Brits. They used Vellala Demalu (aka Tamils) who came from Malabar and settled down in Yapanaya to promote racism and separatism. Vellala Tamils who became obedient servants of Brits carried forward racism and separatism after Brits left and turned this country to a hell.

    Hello Tisaranee,
You quote Prof. Malik Peiris “On whether burials cause Covid-19 to spread via water, his answer is a clear no. When it come to the Covid-19 dead, burials are as safe as cremations”.

It is unlikely that Prof. Malik Peiris was aware that sewage testing allows the identification of locations where COVID-19 is prevalent because such a technique was deployed in both Australia and New Zealand recently.
If what I say is correct, then Prof. Malik Peiris’s answer does not reflect the recent addition to the body of knowledge on COVID -19. Additionally, if the COVID-19 virus is robust enough to make its presence in sewage, surely such presence warrants an investigation to confirm if COVID-19 from cadavers could also pollute ground water.
Previously, another reader pointed out that other countries (notably Israel, US and European countries) may have conducted research and determined that burials are safe. While it is entirely possible that such research may have been carried out, I wonder if those countries rely on ground water for drinking as Sri Lankan villagers do.
It is logical to be safe and continue with the current practice until burials are demonstrated to be safe.

        .
Scrolling down the links provided, I found this on page 4 – but a recent assessment.
        .
        https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/cross-training/a31472426/coronavirus-is-it-safe-to-go-swimming/
        .
To me, it seems as though the earliest blogs this year were very confidently asserting: “No Problem”. Chlorine and other substances would kill the virus.
        .
Later they seemed less sure. It may be that even if you didn’t get it in the water, you could contract it in dressing rooms etc.
        .
Balancing against “infection spreading concerns” should be the benefits that result from getting rid of tensions, etc. CORONA is really beginning to tell on us psychologically, isn’t it?

            Dear soma,
            .
I hope that you appreciate frank answers.
            .
We are a sadly divided nation, and that is reflected in our readership as well. I’m afraid that a good many people use the “thumbs” in a mechanical way, sometimes even organised, looking only at who made the comment.
            .
I’m afraid that you apear to have acquired a reputation for being “anti-Tamil”. Even I consider you to be rather prejudiced.
            .
Many just look at the name of the commenter and then go for one of the thumbs. I try to be rather more fair – but someone else will have to pass judgement.
            .
I think that I also suffer from some hardcore Sinhala readers feeling that I’m too accommodating of Tamil views. Yes, do try to be fair by Tamils and Muslims, because I fear that other Sinhalese are not.
            .
However, I’m vehemently anti-LTTE and anti-Jihadi. However, perceptions are always take time to change.
            .
I sometimes wish your comments were different, but I think that sincerity is more important than cosmetics.

            Soma,

Taking your example here, I would like to say, there are two main categories of people in a country. One group respects the law and order while the others behave like RAJAKAHSE rascals that would never care about the basic ethics and morals.
            :
The very example you take here – no doubt, if Rajaakshes would enter a public swimming pool, for sure, they would not stop urinating, but also leave droppings so that others would never be able to use that water for swimming. THat is the bigger difference betwen people led by Rajakashes and the others led by colombo living Mr Wickramasinghe, CBK style leaders. Even if many would brand Mr RW as a villain and the man to have damaged a lot, yet today, I respect him a lot more than I would do any other leaders. Because at the time, 52 day FAKE govt was created, entire civilized world criticised ” the two main groups in srilanka”. India did it most, looking at the manner, how RW respected democratic goverance. But local vicious groups including SO CALLED Sivuru wearing BPs, stood by the side of CRIMINALs.
We warned the nation, if Rajapakshe would be reelected, things would sink and create all the unexpected. WE HAVE BECOME THE MOST POWERFUL PREDICTORS by having made such statements in PUBLIC.

“I would like to know whether public swimming pools are safe in the prevailing circumstances.”

Just for get the pool for a second.
Kamal Gunaratne told the press on FT, 20 March 2020 :

        Excerpts:
“This is similar to how the entire country got together to defeat terrorism in 2009. The Government needs the support of all citizens of Sir Lanka irrespective of their differences to face the coronavirus outbreak,” the Defence Ministry Secretary said
“Sri Lanka has set an example to the world on defeating terrorism 10 years back as all Sri Lankans, who yearned for a peaceful country, were united for a single cause. It is the time for us to be united again to defeat COVID-19 to set an example to the world,” he said, requesting more public assistance.”

        http://www.ft.lk/news/Defence-Ministry-calls-for-more-public-support-in-fight-against-COVID-19/56-697832

Then on 20 December 2020 he told colombogazette.com:

May take some time to eliminate virus from Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan officials says it may take some time to eliminate the coronavirus from the country.
Defence Secretary Major General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne urged the public to strictly follow the stipulated health guidelines, not conceal any medical related information, avoid community meetings and stay at home.

ow many times have you urinated in the public swimming pool?

        • 1
          2

          Rajash,
          .
Do you know that there are TWO reasons for asking people to shower before getting into the pool?
          .
The obvious reason is to get dust, dirt, etc. off your body.
          .
The other reason is that when you shower (in cold water only? I’ve not been to “developed” cold countries in which the water in the entire pool is warmed) – anyway when you shower, you automatically urinate in the shower.
          .
However, professional swimmers who spend long hours training in the pool have acknowledged that they urinate in it. either Ryan Lochte or Michael Phelps confessed to having done so, and it caused quite a furor.
          .
The chlorine is said to kill any harmful bacteria, but if doesn’t appeal to one, does it? One clue is the colour of the water – urine changes it to green.
          .
A scientist had better take over from this point on!

leelagemalli : Sri Lanka is described as the “tear drop of India”

At one time India or for that matter the whole world was weeping for this beautiful island and beautiful people.

Now its more appropriate to call Sri Lanka the urine drop of the Indian ocean.

        Dear S

In the UK It falls under the type of lockdown (Tier 1/2/3/4) applies at that time. The pools were opened briefly after the first lockdown and am sure is the case now under 3 & 4 etc.

This is the main problem with the moda sinhala buddhists. They don’t read. You just looked at the headline and came to conclusion based on your grandiose delusion.
      .
The testing for coronavirus in sewage is concerned with the remnants of dead coronaviruses, not active living coronaviruses that can infect anything. Much like how at the beginning of the pandemic those who had recovered from their illness tested positive for coronavirus; it’s because the test showed a false positive for the dead viruses in the persons body.
      .
Thank you for proving how important it is to differentiate between those sinhala people who believe in science and the moda sinhala buddhists who have a brick for a brain.

        Sitrep24,
COVID-19 is a new virus and keep on changing. UK has identified a new strain. As such no one can predict the risks involved.
Most Muslims understand the impact of unknowns surrounding the burial of COVID-19 dead. They therefore cooperate with the government. Even the Wahhabi Muslims who claim they follow Islam to the letter have not raised objections to cremation. [edited out]

That is why we need to stick to the GOSL guidelines and focus on helping the families with all other assistance they need?? CT could collect money from us all and give to the families if there bread winner is missing??

Instead we are all focused on being the Head of State ourselves??

This is all we do historically and repeating it during the pandemic times too just as we did with the Tsunami and the war misery??

We are a very special strand of humans (never mind the Virus) who congregate in SL and call it our home?? land like no other.

Perhaps if we analyse this problem of burial Vs cremation, would not the question of how long a virus can survive in a dead body be of much importance. In this regard some valuable information can be gathered in : https://news.ncsu.edu/2020/05/how-long-can-viruses-survive/
As it is quite long, I leave it to the reader to see if it is worthwhile to read the views of the researcher in detail. May be after getting this information, a better view of the subject may help us to move ahead.

      Hello Tisaranee,
The purpose of these comments is to draw attention to the perils Sri Lanka is exposed to in the context of the latest findings in the UK (UK government’s Porton Down microbiology labs).
The new variant, now called B.1.1.7, of COVID-19 (1) carries an unprecedented number of mutations and (2) supplants other strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus rapidly in South East England.
Please do not extend your political discourses to COVID-19, about which we all know very little.

We are getting into a possible catastrophe if we are not diligent as Australia has just now detected the UK variant virus. (21.12.2020). Tourists should not be handled any old how.

Two Australians who recently returned from the United Kingdom have the mutated strain of coronavirus.

Thanks for letting readers know that the UK variant has arrived in Australia. I did not know.
I am sure Australia will apply rigorous processes at the borders now.
The rest of Europe including Poland has stopped all flights to UK.
Sri Lanka also will need to be vigilant because our medical resources (both human and infrastructure) are inadequate to deal with widespread infections.

        Sunil A,
Viruses are different from bacteria. They CANNOT reproduce without a living host. Rajan Phillips’ article has a list of credible experts including Paba Palihawadana who have stated that infection from dead bodies is not possible. In any case, why not allow burial using sealed body bags and / or chemicals ?This is clearly a political decision.

        • 7
          1

          Sunil A,
It is true that some countries are testing sewage for Covid. But the test detects viral fragments, not complete viruses. Even hand- washing breaks up virus particles, so drain water too should be highly infectious in that case, but it isn’t.

            Dear OC

            (1) Sealed bags affects the natural decomposition of the bodies?
            (2) They test the sewage (respective sewage treatments/collection segment/catchment) to check for the virus along with many other pathogens and also to see how this virus is creating new variants etc. The infection of this virus spreads through urine and sewage too should anyone come in contact within the time period the virus can live without a host….and this time varies a lot even on mental surface unto 72 hours….yes is open to interpretation.

Good suggestion provided the Muslim community accepts usage of chemicals after their bathing, to make the body clean.. The other affected party, Christians, will agree, as burials had always been with large doses of lime when ever there was a plague in Europe. I have seen the mass grave in Glasgow.

Yes. This whole COVD pandemic and this virus is so complicated a matter that even the best researchers have not found everything yet. Some labs in countries with vast resources in equipment finance and knowledge, are still behind in coming to grips with it.

Now some guys blame this Government for accepting the advice of the experts and deciding to cremate COVID-19 infected dead bodies. If the Rajapakses ignored the advice from experts and allowed to bury COVID-19 infected Muslims who died and later found that water gets contaminated then the same dumbos will go on blaming the Government for putting the lives of people who live in danger in order to please Muslims for political favors.

I dont mind MUTTI HAMY AKA APawithra to have tasted it – but how can EVER MBBS doctor be that blind to fall on the knees of a witchery man ? How could the kind of MEDICAL post graduates become Prof. Title holders ? I know Jayasumana has published few articles based on UKKD in RAJARATA srialnka and also venuzulian farming communities.

But how come a man with few papers be able to BEAR a Professor title ? I am used to compare it with the candidates that have obtained years long post doctoral research before being blessed with a Prof ship.

Hey Sunil Abeyratne, read this excellent piece by Rajan Philips: https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/to-burn-or-to-bury-the-deadly-question/

If you don’t have the time, then take a quick look at this extract: “If it is feared that graves will contaminate groundwater, it is fair to ask, what about contamination from septic tanks? Sanitary flows, landfill leachate, open defecation are potential pathogen carriers, but not necessarily of the coronavirus. Are drones going to be flown around to catch people answering nature’s call in the most natural way?”

Time to reflect a bit and take science-based guidance from credible agencies before adding to the confusion, mate.

        13

        Hello Easton Scott,
        Thanks for your comments.
I read Rajan’s piece but I resisted making comments on it.
What he says is true and it does not contradict what I said. Contamination from septic pits is common. It is for this reason that wells are located some distance away from septic pits. Open defecation is still worse.
Such crude practices do not justify compounding the degradation with an additional activity of burying infected cadavers.
Is it reasonable to expect the government to compromise drinking water supply by burying infected cadavers?
Conduct investigations/research to determine the associated risks and then based on scientific evidence so generated, make a decision.
What is disturbing is that the majority of the comments are around how racist Sinhalese Buddhists are, which makes one embarrassed to be identified as a Sinhalese Buddhist.

          12

          Disturbed by this?
“majority of the comments are around how racist Sinhalese Buddhists are”
Hardly have I seen any article without mention of these words. And with added abusive epithets at times. But that is Sri Lanka’s divided, fractured, crumbling society.
I am no psychoanalyst, but it is easy to wonder whether it is to give vent to pent up emotions and after letting off the steam, reach a lower stress level.

Hey Easton Scott and Old Codger,

If you have the time, please read UK guidelines for handling bodies of COVID related deaths.

        https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-for-care-of-the-deceased/guidance-for-care-of-the-deceased-with-suspected-or-confirmed-coronavirus-covid-19

I read it, Sunil. Nothing there which mandates cremation. In fact, the only refrerence to cremation is, quote: “cremation is permitted” unquote.

It would seem that the authorities in our dear island are way out of line in comparison with international authorities on this, and given their reprehensible track record in stoking up “minority hate”, one can only ascribe the motive of unadulterated racism and cruelty to this policy.

This could well become the defining issue which brings the whole Rajapaksa edifice down, and then we can all say with resignation, “good bloody riddance” for now.

          • 2
            9

            Hey Easton,
            Thanks.
True. The guidelines make no references to ‘mandatory cremation’.
The key takeaway is the ‘set of procedures and protocols that apply to handling dead bodies where COVID-19 is suspected to have caused the death’. Such procedures are intended to protect the living while handling a dead body in a respectful manner.
I wonder if Sri Lanka has the resources to apply such rigorous procedures countrywide when handling dead bodies although we experienced far less fatalities. It is likely that the advice provided to government by medical professionals is based on similar considerations that apply to UK. There is no reason to consider that Sri Lankan medical professionals are less proficient (Sri Lankan doctors are associated with fighting COVID-19 across many Western countries) than the medical professionals in the UK.
If Sri Lanka did not apply the protocols that are currently in place, we would have had more infections and consequently, more deaths. This comment applies to all Sri Lankans irrespective of the region or ethnicity.
            I have no political affiliations.
The voters will reject Rajapakshas just as they rejected Yahapalanya government. As such, political considerations are of absolutely no consequence when fighting a pandemic.

              Dear SA,
Agree with all you say except to comment on…’ (Sri Lankan doctors are associated with fighting COVID-19 across many Western countries) …”
But these ex-patriates have not been tapped for our Task Forces. Only Dr Malik Peiris has shown some interest but that also not in any govt. sponsored program.
This may indeed be the reason for these controversies, that the best advice from all possible sources have not been taken so far.

        • 11
          0

          Sunil A,
The protocols are intended to protect the handlers of a dead body immediately after death, when the virus is definitely active. AFAIK, even the virus is dead after a few days.
Viruses are strange things. They are more akin to active complex chemicals than life forms. It is still being debated whether they are actually alive. But even the most primitive bacteria are definitely alive.

            Hi OC,
            .
Why would you waste your time explaining repeatedly the position of the scientific community with regards the to the racist policy of ‘forced cremation’ by small (among other things) minded insecure racist sinhala buddhists. These two fellows (sunil and ferryman) who are constantly massaging each others ego in the comments section of these articles will never accept the truth. They will talk about about scientific research only as a means to make justification for the racist policies of their moda people. And when the facts don’t support what they claim (as in this case with regards to ‘forced cremation’) they will try to twist the facts and try to hide behind illogical pseudoscience beliefs. They will however have no problem with water snakes carrying clay pots, pani beema and throwing clay pots into rivers as a means to control this virus.
            .
They try to force their kaali amma devil worshipping religion on people and wonder why ordinary people have such disgust towards them and refer to them with warranted derogatory terms.

There are millions of sewage pits in the country. If the virus can be transmitted to ground water from dead bodies, surely the faeces, sputum and urine from these pits from Corvid-19 positive cases would already be distributing the virus in the groundwater all over the country. Should we first be looking for a solution for this?

    Dear Sir

    Interesting analysis and thank you.

“Principles aside, enlightened self-interest demands that Sinhalese and Tamils reach out to Muslims, and build an alliance of moderates committed to the ideal of a pluralist and tolerant Sri Lanka. That is the only way to prevent the Rajapaksas from heaping a new dissolution on this much bloodied land”

This was presented during the good governance assembly turned into constitutional assembly in the last parliament under Hon RW and Excellency MS and an opposition seat offers by Hon MR. What did they all do.. spent time on a useless constitutional discussion which had no relevance to the Nation.

This is why the Ghetto makers needed to shed their ghetto mentality and unit with National Policies where they can field candidate throughout the land be it Tamil/Sinhala/Muslim and all other identities we are hell bend on looking for to serve the masses. They could have all become UNP party members and laid a great foundation for an excellent 2 party system…..yes we can blame all we want but never have to give a good look at ourselves in the mirror???.

Further more we have proven none of the current ghetto parties are a burden to themselves with no professional qualifications for Nation Building complementing all the miserables from the opposite sides??

Unfortunately for the minority, especially the Muslims, the Racist Rajapaksa’s have picked on them to show their discrimination, arrest their professionals, and use them as the scapegoats, to distract the country from their own crimes, failed leadership, and also to win the votes of the naive majority. They needed a convenient reason to get back into power, and the Easter Day bombings, benefitted THEM more than others. The majority of Muslims rejected these extremists, and know that a terrorist attack like that, would only put THEM in the firing line, with vicious mobs attacking their homes, businesses, and yes, killing them.

Let us not forget the anti Muslim fake news that was spread like wildfire throughout this country, stories of charmed toffees and “wanda pethis”, that only ignorant minds, and gullible fools will easily believe. Scientists had to step in and prove that the “gully” in the food served in a Muslim restaurant was simply a ball of flour to thicken that delicious food. It did not make any Sinhala man or woman unable to re-produce.
Did the Rajapaksa’s step in and pooh pooh these low grade fake news stories? No, they were noticeably quiet, like all other times the Muslims were the target of hate.

      2

      Finally:
The token Muslim leaders who have joined this racist regime, shame on them, for the Rajapaksa’s have discriminated the minority, to further their racist agendas. These Muslims have put power and money, over their own people’s safety and security.
To the Muslims and Christians who voted for these racist rascals, be careful what you wish for. We are seeing open discrimination against your people, as the refusal to bury your loved ones continues, against the guidelines set by the WHO. It is sad you have to beg for your family members to have their last rites and burial, something your people have done for centuries. It is simply ridiculous.

A good article Tisaranee Gunasekera. Thank you.

“Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.” – Buddha
“Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.” – Buddha
“Conquer anger with non-anger. Conquer badness with goodness.” – Buddha

I always wondered if the “Pansal and Dagaba Pooja” Rajapakse Family members have really understood the meaning of the above words of Lord Buddha!

From coming to power, to managing the economy, to the present condition of deciding on the cremation of the Covid dead, shows clearly there is anger against the minorities in Sri Lanka only for the benefit of the family to be in power for ever and ever and for generations.

    This has to change.

GR led, “Authoritative Regime” of “Rajapakse & Co. Inc.” has firmly established among the “Slavish” people including the “Saffron Clothed”. the “Parliamentarians” and the so-called “Intellectuals”. A case in point is the “20A”. When this was announced, everyone started criticizing it for the inclusion of some of the draconian provisions and questioned: “Who is the author” of it. This public discourse was allowed to gather momentum to the extent even the Minister of Justice denied having any hand in drafting it. All of a sudden, President GR said: “I did it and it is mine”. Everyone. (on the Government side) was forced to hide their faces and those included Cabinet Ministers such as Vidura Wickramanayake, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Wimal Weerawanse and all other “Saffron Clothed Brigade” who are appointed to “Advise” the President. The “Moment” GR said: “I did it and it is mine” – No more beyond that. He (GR) has also got another “Tactic” established. He visits every now and then to randomly selected villages and issues “Verbal Orders” to the Officials and that is now considered the “Law”. In such a recent “visit” he instructed the Wild Life Protection officials: “If people enter the forest land to tap “Kitul” trees, don;t check them and prevent such visits”.

GR has no hearts – that was long known to the very same voters that voted for him during his PE. However, not just Rajapakshes, but also people are to be blamed for the mess created by them today. Most ridiculously, even if the elephant is in the room regarding all the loads of blunders/huge mistakes being done by them, they make every effort to rewrite or turn all the loads of their shortcomings on the previous govt. Sure, previous govt ruley by POLONNARUWA donkey, gave people like it was being ruled by a puppet, even if their beginning with our late Rev. Sobitha Thero was unbelievably successful. Alone during the first 100 days, they achieved almsot everything in terms of constitutional changes made to the constitution by having introduced the 19th Amendment. Much became transparent and accoutable as is not the case for example today. Today, entire bunch of criminals in that MEDAMULA cave, do things, but nothing is known tothe people who voted for them. That is why almsot every incl… their supportive pinguthtara community are highly upset about GR led Zimbabwian style govt today.
GR would not have any respect to anyone, not even to his brother MR whose popularity in stupid masses, paved him the way to become president.

Dear LM: When Rev. Sobith started this campaign of “Dethroning” “MR & Co.” he failed miserably to take stock of the situation and overcome the most problematic decision making in selecting “WHO: must be the person to “RELY” on to deliver the goods. The “Polonnaruwa Donkey” (your reference) was introduced by the “Queen Bee” Chandrika. Rev. Sobitha should have had the presence of “MIND” to assess that man who deserts the leader whom he “Proposed” to be the “President” is the most “Unreliable” (Referred to as APPAYA). On the other hand, his “Choice” of “Ranil W” to bring about that desired “Change” was the most “Dangerous” and “Treacherous”. I, as a “Simple Simon,” wrote a few letters making a “Plea” to Rev. Sobitha not to “RELY” on these already tested “SCOUNDRELS” but to PROMOTE a campaign with a “LEADER” quality person who can be “TRUSTED” and “RELIED” upon. Who are we? “SIMPLE” and consideration was given or heard. Didn’t my view prove even at the “START” itself on laying the “Foundation” for the great “CB ROBBERY”? You would have heard my village saying: “Kalabala Unahama Koraheth Atha Daganna Behe”. That is what happened to Rev. Sobith and the country.

My dear SIMON AIYA, this has lot to do with srilanken decision making in general not only on choosing candidates.
Even if we see hidsight clever, to that criticla time, there had been no other seen better than Polo***Donkey to dfeat Medamulana Criminals. I dont see any wrong yet having chosen the man to get rid of MaRa criminals in that critical turning point of srilanken politcs. But after getting elected, the manner all other senior men twisted the mind set of Gramasevaka was beyond ethics and morals. Herewe see, not jus tone single person, but so called decades long experiend politicians in SL make mostly wrong decisions. May well be they have no better option to keep the ball rolling. Each and every grand parties in Srilanka or the like countries never put the country/Nation before everything, but they just worked on promotion of their parties. I am telling you brother, KUNUKANDA in Wanathamulla will stay like a rock since its existence is well connected with all various unhidden forces, that would not be without the existence of that garbage mountains. Likewise, the politics in a country of our nature filled with myths, traditions, blantant lies would not never be subjected to palatable changes.

I hope to see you guys, when I will be visiting to the country next. Each time when I get to read from you and the few, I feel you read my mind regarding srilanken issues. We predicted all these prior to their return. TOday together with MEDIA MAFIA, they make every effort to paint the picture in favour of them only. Most of their self-proclaimations contain blatant lies with professionals in the country being in silent mode. Srilankens should come forward to fight for their rights. We are all not RAJAKASHES supporters. At least 50% of the country are literate about the on going abusive politics of the facists.

Let s wait and see, what ATHANA METHANA NATANA RATHANA has to raise in his next speech in the parliament.

Divide & rule is an old political strategy. Trump has used it openly, & though he lost the Presidency, received the second highest number of votes in US history. His vote base, the white Christian middle America, believes the election was rigged, despite no evidence, & Trump will do everything in his power to create chaos, preventing Biden a smooth transition. We have a similar Rajapakse votebase, in denial of the current economic crisis largely brought about by the pandemic. While the world is pouring billions in funding for the health services to keep the pandemic at bay, GR in his wisdom, decides to reduce the budgetary allocation for the health services while the defence budget is increased. The Health minister & political cronies, supported by state controlled media, is promoting local concoctions passed on, apparently, by divine spirits to combat the pandemic, so why fund the health services for vaccines from abroad? Isn’t the irresponsible Health Minister taking the gullible public for a ride or is she stupid as well? Either way, she & all those self serving politicians are not fit to hold high positions. As for the Rajapakses, if 72m Americans have faith in a crook who has avoided paying taxes all his life, can we blame the gullible voting public of SL?

What Nilantha Jayawardana has said is utter rubbish. His disgraceful attempt to justify Sahran by placing the blame on the Sinhalese shows his guilty conscience and unprofessionalism.
As the Head of the State Intelligence, Nilantha Jayawardana has miserably failed to foil the conspiracy and avoid the bloodbath. If the then-rulers didn’t listen to him, he should have resigned at that time.

What the writer has suggested in the last paragraph will not work as long as Tamils and Muslims demand for “special rights” based on ethnicity and religion while enjoying all the freedoms and rights that are enjoyed by the Sinhalese.
Sri Lanka is the country of Sinhalese Buddhists which was built, protected and nurtured by them with life for over hundreds of thousands of years. As we all know, Tamils and Muslims have no roots here. However, as a result of various destined occurrences in our glorious history, our country was subjected to invasion by sea pirates, treasure hunters, merchants and white colonists whose agents and descendants took up arms against native Sinhalese from time to time. The Easter Attack was the latest of such attempt. It is the ability of the Sinhalese Buddhists to defeat such attempts, what makes Sri Lanka and Buddhism protected thus far.
The Sinhalese Buddhists who brought Rajapaksas back to power will depose them too. They don’t need the help of Tamils & Muslims to do that. However, the Sinhalese should THANK Ali Sabry and the Muslim community for facilitating the downfall of Rajapaksas and speeding up their depose!!!!

            Champa,
            1. Colonization schemes like Mahaweli use Sinhala settlers. No Tamils or Muslims given free govt land in the South. Why?
            2. There are Tamil/ Muslim retail businesses in Colombo city, but most of the suburbs are no-go areas for them. They are only allowed to work as employees in Sinhala owned businesses. Do you know there is not one Tamil or Muslim shop from Peliyagoda to Kadawata (except junk shops, which Sinhalese don’t fancy) ?

Ha ha ha, what boring examples!!!
              .
              1. Learn history first. The Sinhalese farmers in the North were evicted from their agricultural lands by the Dutch for tobacco cultivation. When the Sinhalese refused to work on the tobacco farms, the Dutch brought in labourers from Malabar and settled them in the North. What happened in Mahaweli was “resettling” Sinhalese who lost their original lands to Malabar Tamils.
Tamils and Muslims had no traditional lands anywhere in the South or anywhere in my country.
              2. Oh, that. You can take it as the uncodified Sinhalese version of “Marumakkathayam Law”. Cheers!!

              • 3
                1

                Champa,
You asked for examples of discrimination. I gave you two to prove inequality. Whether they are”boring” is not the point. “Malle Pol ” is not an answer.
.” Oh, that. You can take it as the uncodified..”
Okay then you are saying that Sinhalese DO have more rights than others. Then you were lying when you wrote :”while enjoying all the freedoms and rights that are enjoyed by the Sinhalese”?

Of course, I asked examples of discrimination and you gave me examples of EQUAL RIGHTS enjoyed by Sinhalese as cases of discrimination against Tamils and Muslims. How boring?
If the Tamils have a right to “Marumakkathayam Law” in the North and East, why can’t the Sinhalese in other areas have their version of the same law?
The truth is that, while the Sinhalese are discriminated against in their own country, Tamils and Muslims enjoy exclusive rights based on their race and religion!!!!

                    Champa,
Minorities are treated differently from Sinhalese. That’s the very definition of discrimination.
What are you arguing about? As to others having personal laws different to Sinhalese, don’t you, being a Sinhalese, know that there is a Kandyan law for up-country Sinhalese?
If you really want any personal rights that Muslims have, you can always convert.

“For the umpteenth time, there are rights that the minorities don’t have.”

Even about couple a weeks ago Tamils were prohibited from lighting their Karthikai Theebam.

According to Tamils/Muslims there is a long list of grievances that Champa should be aware of however now she/he/it acting like a dumb.
It is simple they want to restore their democratic rights which they have been continuously and effectively stripped of.

The Rear Dumbass even threaten to ban TNA from parliament for remembering their kith and kin. In this island the Saffron thugs, war criminals, political crooks, drug smugglers, ….. clan enjoy more freedom and impunity while the ordinary people are denied of even right to own land, quality of life, …………. they are living in an open prison while the crooks and criminals are allowed to enjoy tremendous power and unearned illegal wealth.

Buddha’s friend is still living and told me not to bother with a fool like you ( :) ). Buddhism came after Buddha, he was neither a God nor had any Godly powers. He was a prince who gave up his life due to the suffering of all. Idiots like you made him God, it is a philosophy dimwit.

Nilanatha was not the mastermind of the Easter Attack. Therefore, the suggestion to imprison him or any other government officials is a Kekille decision.
However, as the Head of the State Intelligence Service, Nilantha could have acted responsibly and saved the lives.
See, how many children and adults were cremated alive. And, how many were disabled and injured. We don’t know how many Christian priests were killed or injured. The previous government didn’t divulge the exact number of victims. They, including former President, former PM and Parliament were fully responsible for the loss of lives. They may or may not be party to the conspiracy, but they all knew. Embassies also knew. The top brass in various fields also knew. Only the ordinary people didn’t know.

The use of MCC grant to fool the nation during elections, followed by professor Gona ruwan Committee ignoring the sensitivities of our No 1 buyer and the dominant world power, in condemning the MCC Grant, is bound to result in repercussions.

The UNHRC motion against Sri Lanka over the atrocities alleged to have been committed in ending the LTTE war in 2009, is due for discussion at the next UNHRC sessions. The issue over the burial of Muslims dying from Covid-19 is likely to add fuel to the fire, with most Muslim Nations voting against Sri Lanka when considering this motion. The mishandling of these issues by the government is likely to adversely affect the plan to create Vistas of Prosperity and Splendor.

    • 2
      7

      Truth28,
As professionals Prof. Gunaruwan’s committee pointed out positive as well as negative aspects of MCC. Taking the views expressed by them the Government took the decision not to sign MCC.
If USA take retaliatory action against Sri Lanka for not signing MCC that shows their tribal mentality.
USA usually punish those who support terrorism. Afghanistan people were punished for sheltering Osama Bin Laden. But unfortunately in case of Sri Lanka the Armed Forces that eradicated LTTE Tamil terrorist virus are targeting as war criminals. In fact, USA should take action against Tamil politicians who openly supported LTTE Tamil terrorists and LTTE cadres who really committed war crimes and violated human rights.

Do you think Muslim nations take these Dravida Muslims seriously?

        2

        Dear EE
Well said with the following correction

        You said

“In fact, USA should take action against Tamil politicians who openly supported LTTE Tamil terrorists and LTTE cadres who really committed war crimes and violated human rights”.

        This should read

“the actions should be against Tamil Politician (FP/TULF) who created the armed groups PLOTE/TELO/EPRLF/EPDP/LTTE+++ conniving with the Tamil Nadu politicians” it was done to systematically kill their opponents first and take the cause to the GOSL. The armed groups they created for themselves are the Tamil children they abused and the general public they intimidated to give them the democratic mandates for their journeys of 50/50, federalism and then the separatism based on the provocative acts they did to raise the stakes ie “more TAMILS GOT KILLED THE BETTER” for their cause. Hence the trickle of deaths made exponential where the children perished and the same stood in the parliament and told the Nation they never wanted separatism but the “devolution of power” within the unitary state??

The folly was given a limited chance once more in the NPC and sat their and got back to their old ways (having delivered nothing to people or rather obstructed all that has been done by the GOSL ever since the Independence even during the war to serve the people) thinking somehow they can change the unthinkable.

          Dear Thiagarajah Venugopal,
Thank you for providing additional materials in support of my statement. I always read your comments with great interest to learn what happened in Jaffna. I am a firm believer that the main obstacle to harmony between Tamils and Sinhalayo are a handful of racist Tamil politicians who thrive using racism. When they talk about the aspirations of Tamils actually they are talking about the aspirations of that tiny minority and not the majority of Tamils in this country.

Did you not know the history of Jaffna politics by FP/TULF??

Is it because no southern news media in Sinhala does not cover these subjects objectively??

Tisaranee Gunasekara as usual great article

I heard that the govt is planning to register all users of social media. all these story about Kaali and mud pot etc are butt of jokes in the social media.

but Gota looks very intellectual and serious and pensive in the photo attached to this article.

its similar to Mahind’s with that silly smile when he post under his signature intellectual articles written by others

like Kaali they can take different avatars to fool people

I repeat, insiders tell me Rajapaksa clan have got their vaccine, hence they go around prescribing such concoction to much lesser ones. I am also told Lanka has no cocrete plans what so ever, to get or deliver vaccine. They have left that to WHO and others because they have much more important things like censoring media, to deal.

Tissaranee Gunasekara, Prof. Kumar & Chandrikathasan spent 2014 & 2015 to throne War Criminals & White flag Murderers to government. She kept arguing Leader Pirapaharan only appointed Old King as King. She was not taking about who Don Stephen (Britain). This time paid for Jihadists and bombed Tamil Churches to come to power. But naturally to match with the Sinhala Intellectual’s mentality, they are back again with more the double the strength. But the new strength trough was given by Hakeem and Rishard through the 20A. Now she stopped blaming Tamils appointing the Royals. (In fact it is America released King from citizenship requirement). Once again Tissaranee Gunasekara insisting that without believing her, there is no redemption to the Mother Lankawe. Tissaranee Gunasekara preaching is not anything different from the exorcists who murder the people to rob their properties. Tissaranee Gunasekara may not be after somebody’s money but she spins a lot to enhance UNP/SJB crooks political power. Is that new thing to the world that not just the ignorant, but even the learned ones have all good chances to go wrong? Sampanthar Aiya – a ripen politician, CBK- a known diplomat, Madulawe Thero -almost all thought a genuine social worker are people got together & appointed, the White flag murderer, knowingly well as the New King of Lankawe, in 2015.

  • 1

What is belief? Is that really the religion? Why the people believe, another one, the fake preachers? Why somebody insist to take their yoke? Why can an honest teacher educate ignorant, but tries hard to brainwash or betray to make them believe? Forcing his yoke, while hiding his mind, is the basic nature of a communist. If communist open up his mind, people will run away from him, fearing of his ideas. So he/she do not let others study their mind. If somebody tear their mask, they label others as LTTE rump or self-righteous. They are on the of fear people coming to know the truth by understanding things themselves. So they device methods, instead of stimulating people to think, to spoon feed fake and frauds to brain wash the ignorant. Especially, ignorant mass do not have the capacity, to different what is belief and what is science. Herb medicine was one day’s best science. Laboratory rated hospitals, ability to extract & isolates anything from rays through materials to sound or radio waves, a Ministry & and special bodies of laws, the after care and insurance for damages are modern way of life, not just belief or science. It cannot be supplanted by herbs because the country is bankrupt by the politicians’ looting.

Those who oppose Aanduwa and look for a team to replace it are only mirror reflection of it. From 1948, all regime changes repeatedly reinforced that truth. The why Tissaranee is different? She just fell from heaven yesterday with Ferryman like ones? When Mangala was working with the foxy Ranil or went with Vaalaiththodam Jr. we told he is the world’s greatest liar. For that, he said he will destroy all LTTE rumps, but he secretly worked to grant visa for they meet him in Lankawe.
This is how in 2015 we kept try to show the real face of White Flag murderer, but Tissaranee Gunasekara, Prof. Kumar & Chandrikathasan won the game & brought the Appakaraya, was the Judas even to the Devil, to power. That rascal, to save him from UNHRC, worked as a mole of Royals within the Yahapalanaya government. He paid the Sinhala truck driver to bring the Jihadist’s women to Sainthamaruthu, then bombed the house and killed all of them to wipe out witnesses. .
Unless Tissaranee Gunasekara becomes a honest writer and support ITJP to sweep all the Genocide Criminals to be punished in Hague, there will not any Sinhala Buddhist politician will be a politician in parliament, but only a mass murderer & pirate amass people’ money .This time the fix has to come from Geneva, not from confused Tissaranee Gunasekara’s bombastic brain.

  • 1
    2

If it is Journalism don’t paint pictures but show the naked truth out. People have to form their opinion!
Last is, on the point of Burial Vs Burning: Aanduwa is not burning because burial will spread disease. It says the Virus infected body is a time bomb. If the dead bodies are not having virus, then why all governments in the world are taking control of the bodies and they are doing the final procedure? No government is giving the bodies to relatives to have a funeral for two days, give bath, fall on the bodies repeatedly a 1000 times and chest beat. In many countries bodies are left in air-condition storage rooms or even in 45’ refrigerated trucks but not given to relatives to give bath. To bring in Arabian culture to Kattankudy, Hezbollah asked PCoI : ”without planting Dates trees, did you think I should be planting Rambutan?” With all the power in them, Muslims leaders stalled for 18 years the governments, IC & INGO’s efforts to reform MMDA, which is violating both Sharia & UN conventions. By relatives giving a bath to Covid-19 body, Hezbollahs, Hakeems, Rishards et al are establishing another new practice that is not even in the Saudi where the Wahhabism is born.

  • 1
    1

It was said he government won’t hand over the bodies outside. So it called Maldives and take responsibility of the bodies. That government agreed. If Muslims are bothered by cremation, it is a consolation. When government takes all others bodies, all people’s basic human rights are violated. If Burial is the important matter, then why Muslims are insisting that as per the UN conventions any soul of a body buried in Maldives will not be flown to heaven? There is nothing against Muslims, though their Muslim-Sinhala Buddhist governments’ long horned favoritism, unlike the standardization, it is not honored. Muslims are arguing they are patriots so they stayed with government to annihilate Tamils freedom war. But how now that patriotism has changed to calling OIC for economic sanctions against Mother Country? They are calling the Muslim countries to impose sanctions, but then stand back against those countries if they solve the problem by burying in their jurisdiction, Do Lankawe Muslim mullahs claims that other Muslims lands are not holy enough to bury their bodies. Then why they are thinking that their land is not holy enough and planting Dates trees to make to match its holiness to Arabia. The reality here is Muslims are not deprived of anything others are enjoying but they are just showing in their fear of their war time pampering and favoritism is dwindling.

A nation gets the cue from the Government. When the Government itself (especially the members of the ruling party) have no heart, the nation has no heart. When there is no heart there cannot be any feeling from the heart other than a void feeling.

      .
You are a fantastic guy! That discussion (I’m deliberately placing this above it so that the link retains its prominent position – at the very end of the comments, even if others come, they are often placed in the middle, when the article is this “old”) – this discussion is fantastically good.
      .
      However:
      .
You did not warn us that this is 65 minutes.
      .
This discussion is exactly 6 months old (to the day) yet only 65 people have seen it.
      .
There are no comments below the Youtube programme itself.
      .
It has got only 3 “likes” – no “dislikes”, obviously! It is a wonderful discussion.
      .
However, not one discussant mentioned the Elephant in the Room.
      .
The discussants are all elite. No, not in attitude, and it can’t be corrected by any of us – but we’ve got to recognise this.
      .
Ours is a Nation divided into an English-speaking PRIVILEGED wealthy minority and a Non-English-using-INFERIOR-Feeling Majority.
