Thirteen Prison Officers at the Colombo’s main jail have been interdicted after authorities found that they have been receiving bribes from drug lord Samantha Kumara alias Wele Suda.

According to Police sources, the number of prison officers who have received bribes from the notorious drug kingpin is said to be much higher.
Wele Suda is said to have coordinated his criminal activities and lived like a prince in the magazine prison by bribing officers.
Wele Suda was arrested in Pakistan and brought to Sri Lanka on January 14 by the CID in connection with a large number of cases connected to the drug dealings.
The suspect has amassed a massive wealth from drug trafficking and fled the country with his wife last year when police moved on him.
Wele Suda has revealed the names of over 30 persons allegedly involved in the drug racket in the country including a Colombo District parliamentarian and a former Inspector General of Police.
Wele Suda is said to have used a mobile cash payment system to bribe officers.
Currently authorities are perusing details of a number other prison officers who have been named as bribe takers by Wele Suda himself.
This is one of the biggest scandals to hit the prisons department which is already reeling under accusations of various nefarious activities by its officers.

There must be 3 x more than needed loitering near the court house. Things are obviously very profitable around there.

Oi Vibitchana, this is your Sinhalame police system. These Sinhala jokers cant bring justice to any one. How can you trust the Sinhalame government on an internal inquiry to bring justice on war crimes commited by the Sinhalame government.? How STF and Black and Decker missed these prison officers is still a mystery.

If these things were done properly probably the entire department will have to be sacked. The government service has been used as the employment agency providing jobs for the unqualified by ministers going way back. This practice was taken over and amplified to Nth degree by Namal baby and his cohorts who even applied pressure on private companies. The result of this is the whole place is chocked full of unqualified sycophants loyal to MR running the government service. Taking bribes is normal for these people. Tissa Balasuriya the former IGP should be behind bars for what he did as IGP. What a mess the police department is in can only be imagined when it’s former IGP in implicated in drug running. There are impeachable judges sitting on the supreme court we learn. One of whom is accused of domestic violence while the case is being hidden by yet another corrupt institution the AGs department. Just thinking of the monumental mess every single law enforcement agency and department in Sri Lanka is in, gives me a headache.

Why do you want to clear the desk?
You put them in prison with a clear message, life means life. Name them and shame them, conduct periodical tour of the prison for the locals.
Criminals take chances, if they are hanged they are dead and gone, it is not an incentive for others to learn and refrain from committing serious crimes.
If hanging is the only available punishment then the population would be halved over night, reduced to 10.5 million from 21 million.
Then the question is who is going to hang the last person.
