This Government Has Dangerously Lost The Plot; It Should Dissolve Itself & Go Before The People

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“Sri Lanka today lives for the moment. No money for petrol. No money for gas. No money for other essential imports including food. No money for essential medicines and, of course no money for Covid”

Failure, Doubt and Despair

The government  of the Pohottuwa and Gotabaya Rajapksa should not waste anymore time. It must dissolve itself, since every day of its rule lengthens the dark shadow of failure, doubt and despair hovering over the population. It cannot plot a course as it doesn’t have a clue about where it is heading. Bereft of a vision the government is living on a day-to-day basis trying to handle problems, like the Fire Brigade, as and when they arise.

Covid

To some extent, no doubt, the Covid pandemic  is a major catalyst and government cannot be wholly blamed for a global disaster reflecting a national disaster. Looking at it in another way, the pandemic has only served to expose the  tip of the iceberg, namely, a deepseated inherent dysfunctionality of a government system that cannot work because it is structured  not to work.

The Economy

Our failure in the handling of Covid is very really stemming from an unsustainably structured economy. Had we had the money we could have gone for the wherewithal-vaccines, ventilators, test kits and so on at the inception. Looking down at the deep and yawning hole in the Balance of Payments leaders of this government gave that early preparation a miss.

When someone seeks divine intervention that means that person is absolutely helpless. This is what happened to this government. So it went for fake syrups that were concocted by individuals who hadn’t the slightest credibility even for us to take a look at what they were saying. Dhammika became a ‘Vedamahattaya,’ when he hadn’t the skills to do even a car wash. The minister in charge of health, Pavithra Wanniarachchy, who was mercifully moved from her portfolio recently showcased Dhammika Vedamahattaya to the public in what turned out to be a classic superstitious market mover. Pavithra persuaded the Speaker also to do a similar gimmick and thus parliamentary  honour had been bestowed on “Dhammika Vedamahattaya.” In the country where I live this man would have been hauled up before court.

The rest of the ministers and government MPs supported all these crazy moves at least implicitly in their silence. However, one minister in the health area, Channa Jayasumana, defended the quack moves with eloquence. This Channa is a Professor and I wonder how he is able to engage in the onerous task of teaching at university while working as a minister.

We do not have dollars to meet unexpected events like Covid. What our dollars can do the divinity can do without dollars. So we found Pavitra floating clay pots in the river! Despite all her dark arts this lady got the Covid herself. Oh my God!

No Reserves in the Central Bank

The government had brought down the reserves to a dangerously low level. The previous Yahapalana government also contributed to debt but to do that government justice it had been up-to-date on debt settlement and comfortable about the reserve requirement.

The deficit had been largely the accumulated result of ten years of Mahinda Rajapakse rule where all sorts of mad infrastructure schemes were done  on Chinese loans. Some good highway construction had been achieved but the creation of huge debt to finance dead projects like the Mattala International Airport, which is still waiting for use, and the similar Hambantota Port in addition to an International Sports Stadium at Hambantota that has no demand whatsoever, had been disatrous to the Sri Lankan economy that was already inherited a chronic and acute debt economy.

The problem of Highway construction on this scale is that the projects completed don’t bring a foreign exchange flow. When dud projects are added, it compounds a further danger.

For decades the island has had a debt economy and  World Bank had warned successive governments to make structural changes or face danger. With the above Rajapaksa projects matters worsened.

In order to make the structural changes new investments on non-traditional lines especially in agri-based programs should have been planned. Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had touted finance services, IT and and services sector expansion. Instead of pursuing such productive pathways  Sri Lanka governments were relying on tourism development  only. Tourism was doing very well and should form a part of the economy restructure that the World Bank had insisted on. On the other hand, tourism is the first to impact when external shocks like the Covid pandemic breaks.  Ten Years of Rajapakse rule would have been enough to get experts and plan a proper economy to restructure our  economy away from a debt-dependent one. Mahinda Rajapaksa had all the clout during that time but his attention did not go there. With the unprecedented popular support he had Mahinda Rajapakse could have performed an economic miracle; alas that was not to be. Corrupt elements within the family and out in the government ranks of parliament managed to divert attention.

In this way, Sri Lanka today lives for the moment. No money for petrol. No money for gas. No money for other essential imports including food. No money for essential medicines and, of course no money for Covid.

The government has been compelled to stop imports in many areas. The ban on chemical fertilisers has also been due to this, although the government is trying to camouflage that reason. Were it not for this compulsion this isn’t the time to drag in an extraneous issue like like fertilisers. There is a time and place for everything. The repercussions of the ban is not far away for the people to face in the way of food shortages. The prospect of famine is not an exaggeration.

Workers’ Remittances

It would be an interesting academic exercise to assess what Sri Lanka’s economic situation would be had there been no worker remittances. Here, again, the government can do a lot to encourage those seeking overseas employment and those engaged in overseas employment. Instead ,what can be observed is that workers’ remittances are encashed at a stupid official rate and sold at much higher rates, thus leaving our foreign sweaters an exploited lot. Our embassies in the Middle East in particular must be entrusted with the resources and policy to assist socially and emotionally, workers in those lands. At their homes, the government can set up a team of social workers who can visit the homes of these workers and see to their needs.

Medieval Mindset

The medieval mindset that some leaders in government possess has compounded problems. The Rajapksas run to the divine far too often. Imagine Gotabaya who has been long exposed to the American Western and modernised thinking and styles of living going to the human divinity Gnanakka at Anuradhapura for frequent consultation!  The joke in social  media is that Sri Lanka has a Holy Trinity comprised of the Army Commander General Shavendra, Gotabaya and Gnanakka.

The story doing the rounds is that Gnanakka had advised Gotabaya to have the Kandy Perahera this time. The perahera wasn’t held last year but it was done this year. A ten-day lockdown was enforced but the perahera was held. Sans the people no doubt but thousands of artistes took part and we had a report that 45 artistes were infected with the dreadful disease. What does this mean? The Perhera developed a dangerous cluster because all the other artistes who took part would have exposed.

The trouble in Sri Lanka is that there is no social discipline to pursue lockdowns. Any social restriction imposed is being violated in different regions in order to let powerful people show their might. The other day, it was reported that the minister in charge of the police and law and order had violated a lockdown in order to accommodate his son’s wedding party at Shnagri-La and also to accommodate a friend to have his party there the following day.

“This Government Has Dangerously Lost The Plot; It Should Dissolve Itself & Go Before The People”

Oh! No No ……. this government should go on for another 73 years to finish the work started in 1948 ……. and Prabakaran tried his level best to help out ………. mark my word, Prabakaran will win his war in the end with the help of the “Sinhala Buddhists” ……… even though he has left the scene, the “Sinhala Buddhists” will finish it for him: he has no better supporters.

This is what Lankans want ……. if not why overwhelmingly vote for this government? …….. If ye don’t believe me, ask the teachers marching in the streets who claim over 75% of them voted for this government.

Are you expecting Lankans to change their traits? Change their essence? Leopards to change their spots?

Are you mad? ……….. Or am I mad?

Of all the Lankans …… only Mr Udurawana got the question right!

Well, the answer …… your guess is as good as mine ………….

Alright how about Siri Mao’s Socialist Solution?
        SJ would love it.
Let Gota take over all the non residents and residents Personal and Company Foreign Currency Accounts, nationalise foreign banks,…… ?
Then campaign it is foreign conspiracy to bankrupt this island.

Alright where are the professionals, academics and entrepreneurs who formed part of Gota’s think-tank Viyathmaga?

Anura Fernando the head of Viyathmaga Secretariat is missing for a long time.

Would you kindly take this opportunity to give these Gota’s boys a good rounded lesson in Japanese Economics since the Meiji Reform of 1967, and later the lessons learned from Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and how this ministry successfully transform structure of economy.

Sorry I have no clue about what I have just mentioned above. I did a Dayan, dropping names.Pardon me.

Contrary to what many of ye write, the Lankan problem is not political, religious, or social but mental …….. Lankans are closet masochists ……… they harbour a secret desire to be abused and takes great pleasure in it

The last government increased the salaries of the teachers but that’s not what the teachers wanted ……. it didn’t satisfy the deep-down craving for abuse/S&M they harbour ….. so they overwhelmingly voted for this government just to get denied and march in the streets to satisfy their hidden masochism ………

How many Irishmen do you need to change a light bulb?

How many Scotsmen do you need to count a dollar?

How many Lankans do you need to ……… identify their hidden desire …. masochism?

          Native,

Have you visited Japan? I can’t pinpoint but there is something strange about them ……… sorta half-made: neither here nor there kinda thing. Sure they have made great economic strides since the end of the war …… but feel science and research is sorta alien to their society/culture …….

This is the man who admired Mao, Pol pot, Abimael Guzmá, LTTE, and Admired VP for fighting the Hindians….

The Chinese tremendously benefited from Industrial development of USSR and Japan before it started liberalising its economy and then Taiwan, Singapore, …. developed China’s capitalist capacities.
SJ sees those Chinese development as stages of Mao’s communism.

Deng was quoted as saying “It doesn’t matter whether a cat is white or black, as long as it catches mice?”. Actually it was Mao’s deathbed confession. Mao being a 20th century Nostradamus he was able to predict A to Z.

All these were not overlooked prior to their re-election.
      .
Nevertheless, people behaved as if they are blind and deaf
      .
So what is left to be said about them ?
      :
Almost everyone with some sanity should be aware, they would never do it humanly in terms of saving the nation.
      :
Now with essential goods and their prices becoming sky rocketing, the very same people stay like MERCY cows, since they have no options.

Nobody else, but those who voted for them would become their enemies sooner than later. As one young man became highly vocal on this – ” the days the people will tear off the RAJAPAKSHES in to pieces are not far from!:
They deserves it… wait and see.
      :
Alone last 3 weeks, COVID deaths accumulated are over 3000 :::: if B””’ puthas were clever and humanly enough to save them, they could do it.
      .
God help the nation !: THose men/women like that SCPasqual has been louding that they will elect GOTABAYA again….. see that is the best example for PEOPLE s ignorance.

Lockdown can work only. where the law and order is kept above. People will adhere to laws if leaders would do the job well.
      .
Incumbent leadership is not reliable. His leadership behaves as if they are caught by Covid.
      .
Police is even worst. So people are left in the lurch. They came to protect the nation, but with all powers given to them, their inability is proved. All because people thought that the alleged high criminal s could do it better. Their fake adulation is exposed today. ☹☹☹☹☹☹☹

Because your friend opened the flood-gates as his uncle did in 1977 and allowed to import every damn thing draining foreign currency reserves. From the day he came to power, economy went down the hill. The economy that had a growth rate of about 7% in 2015, went down to 2.3% in 2019. He borrowed and increased the debt burden of the country but there are no visible results from the money he borrowed.

You rightly say that the mess was made by the Sinhala Only brigade whose ancestors came from outside the country. The country would be better off if we pack these ethnic warriors to their country of origin-India.

Eagle Thatatha, please explain who thes native Chingkallams are? As far as I know they are descended from a part lion part human Indian prince, who was banished from La La land now supposed to be in Bangladesh and naughty Thamizh ladies from Pandian land in South India. Nothing native about it. Later they assimilated lots of local Dravidian Yakkos( most probably your ancestors) and even more immigrants from the South Indian Thamizh country. There is hardly anything native in all these, other than the Yakko element. Chingkalla language again is a mixture Pali, Sanskrit and Thamizh or it local varient Elu. Other than the Thamizh/Elu element , the other two are from the plains of North India. Even the word Chingkallam is a pure Thamzh word, mening the land of the red or copper ( most probably describing the colour of the soil) . Now Prakritized to Sinhala and to justify this the lion and human coupling myth. Please watch Lion King and sing Hakuna Matata in Swahili.

Shimone the so called Covid-19 crisis is a bad seasonal flu in Lanka, but is being used to destroy the economy by the Deepstate to make trillions Debt trapped Euro-America great again and crash the rise of emerging economies and Asia led by China.

In Sri Lanka and individual by the name of Ravi Kumudesh who calls himself President of a dubious organization called the College of Medical Laboratory Science, who is neither a doctor nor a scientist but a demagogue in the pay of big Pharmacetical companies and bio-technology companies is involved in generating Fake PCR Covid-19 tests and pumping up the Covid-19 bio-tech business.
Kumudesh wants a vaccine free market in Sri Lanka and is forcing the government to waste funds on PCR tests that are useless. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has discontinued these tests because of their inaccuracy but Kumudesah who is advertising the PCR machines and clearly in the pay of the bio-tech companies and should be investigated. Covid-10 PCR, Antigen, Oximeters etc are big business like the vaccine business.

There was no plot, there were no plans…..all they wanted to do was divert attention from the fact that they were, with their cronies (made up of felons, murders and crooks), making bad decisions, making money with corrupt deals, and mismanaging the country, by arresting Muslims, implementing racist policies, and pretending to be the victims of international human rights groups.

They were caught flat footed when the pandemic hit us. On top of that, their “wonderful” pick for leading this effort to battle the pandemic, was NOT an expert in pandemics, or infectious diseases, nor a medical expert, but a suspected war criminal, who still has to explain how thousands of civilians were killed up North. What kind of stupid idiots will choose a man like that to battle a terrible pandemic that even the wealthy countries are struggling with? These rascals politicize everything, and do nothing substantial with the people in mind, only their pockets and their damn power.

Nepotism, cronyism, and corruption, at its worst.

Rajapaksas know very well that they won’t get even 25% support from the people. Not even from the Buddhist monks. They also have a fear that there is no guarantee for Rajapasas’s investments and China’s investments and Hambantota is certain to lose its significance. Rajapaksas can’t even approach doctors, nurses, engineers, lawyers, other government officers and even the common people.

      Dear AYATHURAY RAJASINGAM,
      .
It is correct to say that Gota has proved more inept than any of us ever imagined he would be. This is quite independent of the effects of the COVID.
      .
Yes, their share of the votes polled will fall to 25%. However, does that mean that anything more sensible will emerge? The prospects are gloomy.
      .
Because I’m the sort of person that I am, I will continue to analyse the situation; it is something that we must all do, but unless we face up to the fact that we have to attempt the miracle of getting something better, we will be stuck with people who are as bad,

Mahinda never had any intelligence. He is an oportnist. A dumb moronic scoundrel who cashed in when he got his chance. His entire family is made up of similar people. Over ten years in order to stay in power he wiped out the public sector by installing political appointees with no brains to bless themselves with. These people knew one thing and that is how to sabotage any work given to them from a non Rajapkashe leader. This made the previous government’s job very hard. But what they achieved will never be matched by the current lot of imbeciles. The RW government built up the revenue base of the IR knowing they will need the money to tide over the massive debts Mahinda took. They even managed a Budget surplus by doing this. The number of projects small, Medium and large undertaken in a comparable time slot is 1400 vs 600 if I remember the numbers correctly. Grade nine pass Booruwanse went around making lofty promises all hot air. But people still voted for him. The Sinhalese people are a stupid race. They can be easily manipulated thru race, Religion and jealousy.

The SJB never catches on to what will happen next. In order to stop the Rajapkashes in their tracks they need to think ahead and anticipate. But what they are really doing in playing catchup. Showing deference to the Rajapakshe trinity they trot out advice to the athigaru. Instead of calling a spade a spade. Premadasa senior was also a murderer who brutally putdown the JVP uprising with gangs of so called police and extra judicial groups. The public can still remember what he did to their families. I don’t expect his son to ever win an election. Especially by invoking his Piyano. This has become a joke. The opposition has to get its act together and rally around a who is not a passivist who thinks live and let live is the way to go. The curse called the Rajapakshe family rule has to be pushed out and dealt with severely in order to ensure they never get another chance to hoodwink and murder their way back into power. This includes the booruwanses in their party. All this has to be done ASAP not leisurely at the next election if the country is to stand a chance.

Extremely naïve and self-important attitude typical of half baked middle class Sri-Lankan.

The country has been in a “dangerous” situation for a long time. What is the solution ?

    Premadasa? Wickramasinghe?

Wickramasinghe has been Prime Minister several times ( in all about 10 years ?) and leader of the UNP one time foremost political party in Sri Lanka for more than 25 years.
    .
You say Wickramasinghe has been “touting” changes in the country! Yes like the changes at the Central Bank-got it under his personal control no sooner he became PM in 2015.

You may not be aware, but at the last general elections the UNP failed to win a single seat in parliament.

You say Wickramasinge is showing leadership qualities, is a visionary and a honest man.

    The voters think otherwise.

Who should prevail ? The opinion of a self-satisfied bummer or 22 million people ? Democracy says the collective opinion/attitude is preferable.

Enjoy life in Australia at the cost of the pioneers and tax payers of Australia who built a nice country for old people from other countries to lead a good life.

Eagle Eye so your wisdom says we can restrict import but still able to do exports without bilateral or multilateral trade agreements. If not, are you hoping that we can go back to the self sufficient era of the King you admire? First stop put the blame on someone else court.

“You guys brought a 7 Eleven clerk as president can you do any worse by dissolving?”

On the contrary 7 to Eleven strictly adhere to “Three strikes and you are out”, unlike in this island. More strikes you earn the more “brownie point” one accumulates, in other words more Merits, towards one’s journey, before being elected to the highest job in this island along with his/her clan, …

Could you not find a person who respects democracy, human rights, justice, law and order, keep his/her nose clean, less bravado, more secular, less fascistic, uses less brute force, ……………….. person with brain.

By the way you haven’t let us enjoy your typing for more than 2 years. Is it because you are disappointed with the way the country is being destroyed by Gota and his goons. He promised heaven on earth, Sinhala/Buddhism in this island.

Ultimately he has given us Covid 19.
Those who are put in charge of COVID control are still fighting the LTTE from day one onward. Gota is hoping and praying to guardian gods at least thrice a week the pandemic would go away.

What a pathetic lot which is sitting at the top ………. telling us this country is being ruled according to Dhamma.

Even the 6.9 are becoming more and more skeptical about Gota’s ability to think, process, act and deliver.

Where you’ve been for the past 2 years or so.
I understand at this age its difficult for you to remember if you are in your Pajamas leave alone CT.
      Take care.

Wonder whether SL Constitution has provision for a family to conduct business activities in the name of Government plundering the wealth of the citizens and only the family and associates of the business interest benefit in the name of politics.

So true. The right thing to do is to have regime change now. SL army is made up of shameless slaves. Otherwise they can force a change. Shame on khaki boys.

But out of misery, hunger and suffering come hatred, riots, wars, etc.

Rajapaksas will use these to win again.

GNANAKKA- must have told Gotabaya to stop Tumeric (kaha) imports as a git to God. Tumeric is used for all kinds of Pooja and cleansing in rituals. Betel leaves, coins for panduru are washed in Tumeric. Tumeric water sprinkled around the house to keep away bad spirits.
Highly likely Gnanakka told Gotabaya if you grow all Tumeric in the country, it will bring blessings and rewards to you.
Tumeric is not the main FOREX drainer. There arre many other imported items (milk, dhal, corriander, potatoes, fish and even most ayurvedic products like veniwelgeta etc) that would have a greater impact on FOREX savings.
Just like the crazy idea of conducting the Perahara amidst a massive pandemic, may be the Tumeric ban was from Gnanakks.

So long people would remain indifferent nothing will change palpably.
      .
So called man, who was put above by fake public perception, Gota s situation is made of a POST TURTLE….
      – Americans know it very well, if the turtle would not take him back to the floor level, turtle would not feel it better. Likewise, Gotabaya should be released from his tensions. I have no doubt, the bugger should be going through all the mental inbalances these days. Or, OTOH, I feel, he should also be resposible for the mess created due to his inablity today. Where on earth a kg of SUGAR went up to 220 rps … ? Even in Germany, we pay like 90 rps /kg… Germany’s cost of living is much higher than that of any average cities in the US.
      .
The man, who louded at any petty price hike, none other than JATHIYE PINGUTHTHARAYA – AKA Mahinda Rajapakshe stays mum today as if his all senses are cemented by his goons.

Native Sinhalayo should have thought far and ensured all the Indian origin people to Canada New Zealand and Australia, instead of those slots being taken by them. That would have helped them immensely in their endeavours to alleviate terrorism in Sri Lanka, which could have turned this resplendent isle a peaceful place for them live and foray into the future as a leading Buddhist nation.
In this context it would be nice to find out:
    How?
    When? and
    Why?
The Sinhalayo, with their unnerving passion for Buddhism, clamoured and opted to desert the much loved Motherland?
Perhaps, it may be entirely due to limitless affection towards the motherland and affliction to the espoused Buddhist principles, by those deserters. Add to the wore the cold (extreme – 40 degrees and freezing) is a undesirable element compared to SL.
Author Shyamon, must be enjoying the 4 seasons of Melbourne weather, but definitely not the case with Toronto. Plus point is that the skin does not get burnt for extreme sun and the skin colour becomes very enticing over a period of time, as If a beauty therapist is at work every day!

If anyone thinks that the Rajapakse Family Government is an honest government thinking of people’s wellbeing before their own, Sri Lanka under this family rule will not be in this dire situation. Asking them to dissolve themselves is a big fat hope, will never happen.
