Thorough Investigation Into Communal Violence: Refrain From Using Religious Leaders For Political Purpose – Youth Orgs Demand Government

As many as 30 youth organisations representing communities across the island met on Friday (31) to condemn the terror attacks of April 21, demand that the government conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incidents leading up to the attacks, and calling for more youth representation and inclusion in policymaking.

The youth, from the Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Central and other provinces, representing diverse groups, such as the Young Lawyers Association, the AFREIL Youth Network, the National Christian Council, Youth for Democracy, District Youth Federations From Jaffna and Batticaloa the Elpitiya Saviya Youth Organisation and the Karunya Foundation spoke about how the hopes they had pinned on the incumbent President and the government in 2015 were shattered by power-centric politics that has taken precedence, drawing business and religious leaders into swirling, toxic vortex.

“We request all religious leaders to refrain from contributing to the power-centric politics and we also urge political authorities to refrain from using religious leaders for political purposes,” the youth said.

They also asked that the reasons for terrorism to gain momentum in Sri Lanka be investigated, asking for both short-term and long-term measures to be implemented to resolve these issues. “Attacks on religious establishments must be probed efficiently, without any political interference and culprits must be brought before the court. We also request government authorities to refrain from protecting those who engaged in violence,” the youth representatives said.

Referring to those seeking political advantage by attempting to unleash violence on the Muslim community, the youth entreated the political parties and groups to put aside partisan politics and work for the betterment of the country.

Attorney-at-law Jayantha Dehiaththage questioned the degree to which the anti-Muslim attacks were coordinated and carried out on May 13. “This must be thoroughly investigated,” he said.

Meanwhile, the youth organizations said they intend to join hands with the Muslims, to defeat terrorism. “We urge all youth to use non-violent measures against all forms of violence,” they said.

AFRIEL Youth Network’s Ravindra de Silva said the youth of the North were determined and would do all it takes to ensure communal tensions propagated by a minority group of hardliners would not flame into a full-scale war. “None of the youth representing many organizations from the North who are present here right now are willing to enable or aid a war in any way,” he said.

“We hope the business community will also take the necessary steps to strengthen understanding and trust among themselves,” the youth organisations said. “Vicious propaganda aiming to destabilize a section of the business community will derail national peace and harmony. It is important to bring this sort of activity to an end,” they said.

The youth were also vocal about wanting more inclusion in policymaking, pointing to the fact that those operating at the grassroots level, such as themselves, were excluded from the process. “Since policy reforms fail to include the people’s opinions before implementation, communities are often unaware of new policies and their outcomes and are easily manipulated. by extremists and rumor-mongers,” they pointed out.

Unfortunately the so called religious leaders, like mahanayakas and cardinal ranjith are fighting one over the other to be in the limelight cashing on the tragedy, coming out all sorts of statements. They should keep out of POLITICS. But will they? Cardinal is all out to please rajapaksas hoping for something.

      Dear Youth Organizations,

      Thanks for the initiative.

The older generation has failed to create a just society.

      Do not trust the

      1. Monks
      2.Cardinals
      3.Priests
      4.Ulama
      5.Polititians

They all are after their own self interest. For example the Maha Nayakas, Yakas, Do not condemn Sinhala Buddhist violence, the Ulama lets the Devil, Satan following Wahhabi-Salafies roam free, and the SLPP politicians initiated the Anti Muslim violence on May 13th.

Who the hell is “ulama” ?

If we are not to trust them we shd know who they are.

Youths, Unfortunately I am no longer in your age group.I have studied this problem from about 1954. The problems always start with the safron robed gents- I do not call them Monks.I am a Buddhist and I am ashamed about these fellows. They have no culture, decency and whatever you want to qualify as a leader.

Upali, while I agree – who gave these saffron and now the white robed men of cloth “power” to utter anything and everything and get away? Our illiterate, unclothed, thieves, liars, cheats, pickpockets we modayas have systematically elected them since 1948.

Do you remember the act of Sir John Kottalawella and Oliver Goonatilake – they warned the then ball headed saffron robed thugs that their heads will be tarred if they went ahead with their so called protests.

The clergy of this country need to know and be reminded of their calling and these thugs should be dealt with the maximum punishment the law provides for without fear or favor.

The monks of today have definitely lost their respect among faithful to be an influencing force for politicians to gain votes.

If there are any GENTLEMEN in politics – please distance yourselves from monks and priest.

The Cardinal is another communal minded fellow with no credible pedigree to belong to any of the two major communities in Sri Lanka. His desperation to identify himself with the Sinhalese, he has openly come out as a proxy of MR and clan ushering in a new level of communal discord.

Good that the youth is mobilizing but they should ask for concrete steps such as a generational change and for the Younger generation that has longer to live in the country to take over. Change is desperately needed from the current geriatric politicians who have ruined the country.
No more Corrupt Bondscam Ranil, clown Sira or Mahind Jarapassa and siblings. Get rid of one and all!
Youth should demand that no one over the age of 62 should contest at the up coming elections as the current generation of corrupt politicians have ruined the country and are living too long and preventing the new or next generation taking over leaderhip.

Also, instead of playing identity politics, they should be looking to identify the foreign hands behind the Easter sunday carnage and not taking funds from US frnts for this work.

Yes, these young people should also organize a massive protest outside the US embassy, whose so called diplomats were discovered by police sniffer dogs at the JAIC Hilton with bomb materials,
We know who are the masterminds behind the Easter carnage to Divide and Rule Sri Lanka, and set up a US military base and supply lines for its War machine in the India Ocean in the Cold War against China and Asia Rising.
US with its Saudi proxy owns and operates IS to destabilize countries so that America can be great again!

        Shamil ,

Well said !!! As long as the US is up and about the world will be in a mess a bloody mess.
All good countries export something that is beneficial to others but the US exports a culture ( Porn, Drugs, Alcoholism, Violence, Satan worship, Racism, Vulgarity, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Hatred, Etc Etc ) that is disgusting, so disgusting that it even makes God to turn his face away from the Satanic land.
Where the Devil is openly worshiped the goodness of God does not exist.

Salute you for coming forward. It’s an excellent service if you can convince the youth to condemn the terrorism from whichever cornet it comes and work for the unity of nation without becoming the prey to anti-Muslim propaganda orchestrated by organised racist groups.

If you would like to build a country where people who speak different languages, have different histories, subscribe to different systems of belief and ideologies and practice different rituals and cultures can live together in peace as citizens of one state that all of them own equally and which provides all of them with equal security and opportunity then please do the following:

    1. Remove section 9 of the constitution
    2. Remove section 35 of the constitution

This will lead to the changes mentioned in this document and enable all citizens of the state to feel that the state belongs to them and will give them security and facilitate the expression and realization of their potential regardless of what language they speak and what culture they practice and what system of belief they adopt and what gender they identify with https://www.change.org/p/mysrilanka?fbclid=IwAR1bLo2D6oIbUQIDFNRoK76VCALlGtcE1hBDs43X-Xw7l8lwKwZAC0u_KWs

      Nirmalan Dhas

A new person by the name Nagananda Kodithuwaku wants to contest the upcoming presidential election. He also talks about a new constitution with a complete change. Will he get rid of section 9 & 35 of the present constitution or will he make it worse? Why not write an open letter to him to see what exactly his policies are for a future Sri Lanka?

Youth Orgs, very good initiative. Today, the fastest selling item on SL markets is “Racism”. Main stream media are the biggest suppliers. Then you also have individual suppliers of social media who run so called v-blogs (video blogs) in Youtube. Main stream media wants ratings increased while these individual vloggers do it for Youtube views that pay them.

Agree! Congratulations to the youth for raising a voice. A much needed initiative. Take the next step too. Every time the media adds fuel to a developing story without reporting the facts, counteract it using alternative digital methods. It’s very often the main electronic media outlets that contort events; highlight the negative side of the issue; put in their own take on the event. They are often driven by the political agenda of their masters. This fuels hatred, suspicion and anger among the general public. The public are tuned into their favourite electronic media channels and are “empowered” by the venom hidden behind their reporting. Very often it’s the young media talk show hosts that poison the hapless listener. Besides the religious leaders who are seen to be getting even more involved with what seems to be now a politically instigated situation, the media reporting should draw your attention too.

The call for religious leaders out of politics and vice versa is a positive but challenging. The youth movements that started in 1965 & 70 ‘s in the South and the youth momements in mid 1970s & 80s were brutally demolished with large scale sufferings, deaths and destruction of the nation under the influence of religious extremism. The people of Srilanka blindly go behind the fahe religious leadership and believe whatever they say instead of what the religions say. It is an impossible task.

Youth Organization: The “MISSION” launched to call “INVESTIGATIONS” must come to an “END” now. Haven’t you made an assessment of the performance of this Government since it’s coming to being from 2015 to date? Did you find any “COMPLETION” or any “PROGRESS” of any “INVESTIGATIONS” that were and in the present , left in the hands of the Government and its Investigative machinery OR have you SEEN any “DESIRE” or “INTERESTS” in handling any “Investigation”? In my review and assessment the answer to these questions is a firm NO. I request, you too, to get engage in a “REVIEW” and an “ASSESSMENT” of performance all these “POLITICAL PARTIES” and their “Representatives” whom you have “ELECTED” to represent you in the Legislature. Have they LISTENED or at least FEEL for you? NO. Then what have they done all this while? All what they have done were to “FEND” for themselves and their cohorts. This is the “SITUATION” you must see along with it’s “IMPLICATIONS” and “PROBLEMS”. The next most important and vital step that must be to CONSIDERED and TAKEN is : WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. Please, please DO that. Don’t waste any more time in engaging in wishful thinking. To be very precise, I would appeal you to consider the NEED to DISBAND this “CONGLOMERATE” of all these major corrupted Political Parties and their representatives who ultimately were voted by you to represent YOU and KICK them out of that power they wield on YOU. Please GO for a BRAND NEW ALTERNATIVE. I believe that is the ONLY SOLUTION and the NEED. I say again: DON’t WASTE TIME IN WISHFUL THINKING and PROJECTS. The FUTURE is in you hands.

While welcoming the sincerity and braveness of the youths I doubt they could succeed in defeating the three monsters, — current courupted politicians, fanatical religious leaders and racist journalists and their media — who run this country. Nothing could be achieved until these creatures are wiped out.

Hope there will be a “youth spring” to get rid of our current criminal and corrupt politicians.
politicians mainly MS. Obviously the youth seems more sensible and matured, compared to the rest including monks in Lanka. Get some elected and send to parliament. Even tenth grader can do a better job than our shit head politicians. If only , they can unite beyond religion and race, then they
sure can be a force in making a change.

    Hey Youth..

You need some education first –

    1. Throw away your iPhones, and all handheld devices and wean yourselves away from your social media for one weekend –

2, Sit down and get yourself a copy of Emergency ’58 and do a thorough reading.of that book individually or as a group.

    3. Read up on Assassination of S.W.R.D Bandaranaike and the conspiracy of Buddharakkita thero of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya.

Once you are done, you will understand, what has been ailing this country since independence.

You don’t need, sticks, stones, guns and swords to fight a corrupt government. You need brains and some critical thinking.

Once you do the homework I suggested, you are ready to take on any power.

Please, do not even think about getting on the streets protesting, unless you have done your homework,

    Good Luck!

These fellows are unknown to us. They may be sponsored by NGOs and foreign agencies. They are barking on behalf of their masters.
As Mangala (Homo) can not put Samanmali, Sarath, Saman, Kaushlya etc. He introduced some new faces. Those who work against their own country will go to hell.

Its funny to see a Cardinal appointed by a foreign Pope of a foreign religion sitting in the Vatican wants foreign government involvement in SL to provide peace and law in the country and the region. Its the Catholics who ruined SL culture in the past, starting with the Portugese who killed the last king of Jaffna, then the Dutch to a lesser extent and the British who killed the Kandyan King after capturing Kandy and thereafter.

Dear friend , I do not agree with MR brand politics played by cardinal. But it is wrong to say cardinal wanted foreign powers to keep peace here. Instead he said 4/21 bombing was carried out by some proxies of western powers. So no out side power should not allow into the country.
