To Shoot At People Who Raise Their Hands In Surrender Is Illegal – Weliweriya Residents

As the death toll rose to three from the Weliweriya clashes on Thursday night, enraged residents told the BBC the morning after the incident that security forces personnel had pursued and attacked people inside the St. Anthony’s Church in the area.

“According to internationally accepted rules of war it is illegal to attack people inside a hospital, a religious place of worship or a school,” one resident of Weliweriya told the BBC.

“It is also against these rules to shoot at people who raise their hands in surrender. You can arrest them and prosecute them. You cannot shoot them. It is a lowly group who did not even know these international laws that attacked this church,” he said in the interview.

Residents said that there were bullet holes and bloodstains at the church. They said the parish grounds had been filled that night with people seeking refuge and looking for their loved ones who had gone to demonstrate against the contamination of ground water in the area.

Eyewitnesses to the alleged storming of the parish grounds by masked security forces personnel say young boys were made to kneel and mercilessly beaten.

“There was blood pouring from their noses and mouths. They pushed me with their assault rifles,” one woman told the BBC.

Even as a tight security cordon was thrown around the Weliweriya town as residents prepared to mourn the death of 17 year old Akila Dinesh, the first victim of the violence, the Colombo National Hospital reported that a third victim, 29 year old Nilantha had succumbed to his injuries, bringing the death toll to three.

Despite the official figures citing only Akila’s death, residents vowed that the casualties had been higher after seeing their friends and neighbours fall beside them as soldiers deployed to quell the demonstration fired into the crowd.

The Government moved in large contingents of Special Task Force personnel and Riot Squads into Weliweriya last night to ensure crowds of mourners did not get unruly during the funeral, eyewitnesses said.

This is what the army did to surrenders in the North and in Mullivaaikkal. So, they do what they learned in the North as per normal, and continue it down South.

According to a news report in Ceylon Today the Secretary of the BBS has admitted that he is the one who set the Army to the scene to control the people. Is is holding such powers. Anyway he does not want animal slaughter but prefers human slaughter.

Friday last week in Bahawalpur, Pakistan a Shia cleric and his teen son were murdered by Sunni gunmen simply because they are Shia. And that is only one of 1462 reported killings the world over by Muhammadans during the month of Ramadan.

But this Lanka Muslim writes as if deaths at commotions happen only in Sri Lanka. Such people do not see how and why villages who were demanding safe water dragged their protest to block the Kanky-Colombo highway. I say it is the people who sought Arab spring type commotions throughout last year are responsible for these deaths.

And now anti-government cliques have their opportunity to shed crocodile tears and write about the incident as if they they were at the seen. Who ever the parties involved to complicate and extend and expand the protest, the Government shouldn’t have dragged the army to clear the road. Police should have the capacity settle the matter.

Gnanasara thero of BBS is now calling the shots for the defense ministry. He recommended the recent attack, he says.

People want clean water flowing from their wells, and the state got their blood flowing.

Gnanasara thero has shifted his attention from Muslims towards Sinhala protestors.

To establish People’s Right to Protest(R2P) now we need R2P from the UN!

    How shameful?

To attack people of this country who stood up for a very basic human right.

The right to drink clean water. A resource our beautiful country is blessed with abundantly.

Who is responsible for ordering Armed Forces to interfere in democratic, civil isssues of society?

Face of ugly fascism is now clear. This is a prelude to how Sri Lanka will be goverend in the future.

The country is now faced with a deep seated, corrupt, horrific dictatorship.

As soon as we got rid of one blood thirsty criminal who was ruining this nation for 30 years from jungles of the north.

How unlucky can Sri Lanka be? Is there any limit to this misery?

Sri Lanka urgently neeeds opposition leaders with with wisdom and courage. And selfless, fearlessness.

To lead this country and her people to a better place. UNP has failed the people badly in that task. Difficult to admit. But that is the hard truth.

May those who laid down their precious lives for us rest in peace.

      @Ben Hurling

Duh! It’s not the UNP but villagers such as the ones in Weliweriya who turned an idiot like Mahinda into a Maha rajathuma and gave him, his family members and his party ‘kroothaguna votes’ who are the fools to blame. Some people learn things the hard way.

Given below is a FB status by a journalist called Dinidu de Alwis which is being shared by some people. It’s NOT the opposition but these majority fools who are to blame for everything that has happened post war in this country. Remember how one Mervin Silva who only got 2000 plus votes from Colombo got one lakh fifty thousand votes when he contested from Kelaniya in Gampaha???

FB status of Dinidu de Alwis:

“When we spoke about the suffering of the Tamil people during and after the war, when we said that this government is too powerful, when we said that the army is not as benevolent as people thought it was, you called us Tigers. When we were working for newspapers with peanuts for pay, you called us Dollar-slaves. When we said that there should be equality and justice in this country, you said we’re bum-boys of the white man.

We’ve always said that the government should be just; that everybody – be they Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, UNP, UPFA or JVP – be treated equally. If you don’t mind living under a government that shoots its people when people said they don’t have water, when they complained of high diesel prices, when they urged not to force pension schemes down their throats, then you have a right to be silent.

Remember, the people who shot and killed a 17-year old boy yesterday were the same Army that you blessed with overnight Pirith and Bodhi Poooja, the ones you celebrated with boards, hoardings and cut-outs, the ones you welcomed with Kiribath. Remember, that when people were getting shot, the eldest son of your king was checking if lights for Carlton Super 7s were working.

It will be the same Army that will pump lead into you, when you someday hit the streets, asking for the removal of this government. On that day too, your almighty king will put up a show with a rugger match, a car race down Galle Face, and a few tits as cheerleaders.

By that time the people you called traitors, Tigers and pariahs will be no more. You won’t even remember their names or faces. They, however, will remember you. They will continue to feel sorry for you.”

We should be ashamed of these barbaric armed forces who have used live bullets, iron rods and poles to attack the unarmed civilians who only clamoured for their very need – DRINKING WATER. We even know that these same armed forces attacked the Sri Lankan Tamil surrendees when they came forward waving white flags – upon the orders of GOTA. As Sinhalese, if we think and accept the fact that the Sinhala insurgents should not be killed when they surrender (it is also an international rule) then our Tamil speaking brothers and sisters should also be treated in the same way. It was a war alright but through fear of getting killed or for some other reason the top LTTE leaders surrendered and they shouldn’t have been killed by our armed forces even though that stupid murderer gave orders. Maybe those surrendees didn’t have any wealth like KP and a huge voter base like Karuna and Pillaiyan. They have proved beyond doubts that the they do everything for their political survival and also to amass huge wealth to buy over the Opposition law makers. Now, Sri has become the WORST COUNTRY ON EARTH TO LIVE except the present rogues who rule the country and their henchmen.

All this violence, because the people asked for what they were entitled to – clean water. Now the people understand what the poor people in the North must have faced. At least the people in Weliweriya have a voice to protest what happened, the poor people in the North suffer in silence.
The criminals have tightened security for the funeral of this poor boy. This is worse than a police state.

This is a ruthless, corrupt, regime, and many Sri Lankans are opening their eyes to that fact, after this display of excessive violence.

So why we want to make big sound,

This time they forgot to bring the copy of the Geneva Convention .

I hope now my Sinhalese friends, who defended the Army’s wrongdoings back in 09, by labeling the killings of innocent civilians as ‘defeating terrorism’ understand how mislead they were. Taking one’s life is wrong regardless of any given reason. It is also funny that the government that’s proud to have defeated the LTTE,having denied all allegations of war-crimes, still continues to show how well it ‘cares’ for its own people. Deepest condolences to the families of the dead. Peace

      Much apperecaited words of solidarity.

North and the South of SL must realize the enemy is common to all.

Fascist, corrupt, brultal systems of government do not discriminate.

All Sri Lankans must struggle united and wage a battle for human dignity in our nation together. If divided along racial lines Sri Lanka will lose.

Unfortunately to say this, innocents got killed and numbers are going up and this incident wake the entire country, Army followed the order; but the big question is who ordered ?
if you apply this question to 2009 the same answer will come out ,
the political tops did the crime not forces

    • 0

When it is true that “ARMY FOLLOWED THE ORDERS” and killed such innocent people of Weliveriya and (innocentS in the North) then (If you add the fact that SL forces are highly paid with additional perks) the definition to “Army” is “ONE WHO SOLD HIS SOUL FOR A REGULAR STIPEND”. HE IS NOT A SOLDIER.

If you can shoot Tamils who raise their hands and legs why cannot you shoot sinhalese who raise their hands also. This government is rapidly becoming an objective non racial government. This is why I joined ones who support the view that Rajapakse are criminal by their nature. If all other leaders incl. CBK wanted to defeat the tigers militarily, just ignoring civilian casualties, any of them could have won the war – even long years before May 2009. Alone- few facts that are becoming evident to the masses today are enough to call for war crime investigations with mediation of UN and punish Rajapaksa’s and all that are accountable for all killings. That then finally heal the wounds of victimised tamil people and the increasing majority from Weliweriya and across the country that bear the dissident views against this uneducated rascals in the ruling bunch. They should be punished to the manner Sadam hussein was executed. Then only we the sinhalese and tamils would feel that justice is done.

It was heart-wrenching to see the photos of the distraught mother at her only son’s funeral. The savagery of the Sri Lankan military is only now becoming apparent to the general public in the South. It was not just the indiscriminate shooting but the vicious attacks on the public and the press have no justification whatsoever. Masked military men walked into a church and savagely beat up young boys who had taken refuge there hoping they will be safe from these savages but alas, they were brutalised. National heroes have overnight become disgraced murderers.

The military is refusing to divulge who gave the orders to shoot the unarmed protestors. I bet Gota the satan was the culprit here. The army is conducting its own investigations into the shooting and we all know what the outcome of it will be, if it’s report is published. It is time people realised that the Rajapaksa regime needs to go and it should be removed by whatever means.

    Postwar2009,Katunayake,Chilaw,Derniyagala,Weliveriya,Today and Tommorrow
“Violence begets Violence”, “Those who take to the sword, die by it”, “What goes up must come around”— these are synonyms said by grate wise people. Ever since the North –East war ended in 2009,one of the blatant allegations against the SL Government and its security forces was that Thousands of innocent people died in this conflict and nobody has taken responsibility or neither brought anyone to account.
If a Nation is guilty in killing its own people innocently in any given conflict and does not make account for it, it only relies on its stubborn brutality and never learns it’s lessons the given way or even the hard way, only brutality in its wisdom continues, what we experienced with the bullets of Police and Security forces, in Katunayake,Chilaw and now Weliveriya for unarmed citizens protesting for their rights for better wages, help for the Fisheries industry or for un-contaminated water, lies is in blind eyes and deaf ears of Authorities. If this is the way that authorities in the government behave, then we are not far from a country of sheer anarchy and chaos that builds up to a regime that governs with repression and oppression.

It is wise for President Rajapakse and His Government to turn around now and Build up a Nation that lives Reconciled to one another, be it Authority and Subjects, Rich or Poor,Supirior Race or inferior, Majority or minority , Whatever Religion One may belong to, it is still opportune time to work for True Reconcelation,Justice and Peace.

This “Water Terrorists” story can’t be believed as our Saddarmadveepa Chakrawarthi once said that our Rana Viruvo’s are well Disciplined and world no. 1 forces. Our Aadambarakarakara Thaththa also said that our Ranaviru Forces fought the world no. 1 Terrorists with Labor Charter in one hand and in the other hand a food packet to give to the captured hungry enemy.

Recently our Gaanu 5 Naanasara Bebadu Balu Sena and Other Kolu Senawal ask India to get advise from our Deshapremi Forces how to eradicate the terrorism in India. Nice way to combat unarmed “Water Terrorists” and Indian forces should learn a lesson or two from our Rana Viruo.

I am sure when there is an election, Aadambarakara Thaththa will start banging his chest and say firstly Mother Land, Secondly Motherland, Thirdly Motherland and fifthly also Mother Land and Gampaha Idiots will vote these murders again and to take the power.

“OK. But watch carefully at next election in Gampaha and weliveriya, katunayake, deraniyagala.”

gamanip,i don’t think you need to look that far.The repercussions of this could be felt at the coming central and north central provincial elections.Asking for non contaminated drinking water is a common essential need for everybody, not only the people in weliweriya. When you are shot dead refusing to drink poison, then everyone even in kandy or kurunegala are going to get angry. This won’t go away like the others.

The million dollar question is whether the people in kurunegala and kandy will use their protest vote to stay at home or vote for the UNP.
The UNP may not be ready to capitalise on the situations such as these that arise because they have been playing the goat like buffoons and the disorder in the party and the leadership issue might make people think twice about voting for them.Another missed opportunity it seems.

This failed man gamini lives in a cold basement in Suffolk. So, how does he know the political climate here. Of cause people will vote for MR. They cannot vote for Ranilgala. People still remember what it was like in 2002-04. He signed his so-called peace agreement with terras. But terrorist’s killing spree continued unabated. He offered no jobs even for his backers. So, in spite of all the backing by proxies of the west, the UNP lost the elections. That’s the trend even todate.

If this has happened in a another country, Chief of Defence, Secretory of Defence and may others were resigned, but this brutal regime and murderous family can still stay put at the expense of innocent civilian lives.
Madamuulane thugs are taking about the investigation, what they have done to date, have they take all the weapons for forensic examination and identify who fired the fatal shots at the innocent civilians. Has this murderous Brigadier been asserted for killing innocent?
They think they can rule the country by the bullet, it will be short live, and people power is greater than the power of the bullet.

These are the scences that happened in the front yard and back yards of the north and east many months ago, did anyone from the south lift a hand to help these innocent citizens from the brutal thuggery of the armed terrorist forces, now its in our own yards a taste of what happened and the massacres that went on for years, retrns to our own backyards, that’s why only now after many moons they have apprehend the killers in the rookantha case, killing of 5 university students from Trincomaleem and now the 17 aid workers in Muttor, these atrocities are happeneing right under our very noses as we kept silent over the killings of the innocents, until it comes to our doorsteps we were ssleeping. What a curse these mafia goon rulers are doing to the innocents who are only asking for clean water, do they deserve a massacre for a living waters ???

Hundreds of thousands of cases of lawless actions have been going on in Sri Lanka with impunity for donkeys years and, but the people not affected don’t bother about it: They ignore these as not their business.

Just four years and the very people who rode the
high way of popularity in Sri Lanka and abroad
    have mud on their face.

Some short cited idiots like the Editor of the

See their headline report today. The question is
not who threw missiles or Molotov Cocktails (if that
is the truth) is waht matters.

A bigger question is who deployed the Army to
deal with harmless civilians who were giving
vent to their feelings? Can Rajpal the ‘know
all and the be all’ he thinks answer this question.
One day, sooner than later, this Goebells (who
beat the real one) will learn his lesson too. The
issue is about water and not sharing a girl friend
    and showering gifts!!

One will see more of it in time to come. Our great

‘When good people run things everyone is glad, but when the ruler is bad everyone groans..

Leadership gains authority and respect when the

    voiceless poor are treated fairly.

    When degenerates take charge

    crime runs wild’.

I wonder if someone who has computer expertise send these videos and pictures of the horror that befell the people of Weliveriya at the hands of a ruthless, brutal Familial dictatorship. These should be sent to , Prince Charles, Prime Minister Cameron, Ban KI Moon, CHOGM Sharma the crooked secretary of the Commonwealth, Navi Pillai head of the UNHRC and all heads of Commonwealth nations that hope to Attend Mahinda Rajapaksas Bailla Party .These pictures will tell a different tale from the propaganda that is spewed out by the cheap rag called Daily noise or the dirty TV station ITN.

They are represented in Sri Lanka. They know the ground reality more than us. They too, have their own agendas.

I suggest both Gota and Basil should be sent back to US.
Basil back to his service station job (petrol shed in SL terms) and Gots back to his small university IT job
      How good it will be!!!

Condolences to the families of the victims and to the injured in the Weliveriya incident. Armed Forces are meant for wartime. They are trained only to ‘follow orders’ Unfortunately our Police Force are not fit for purpose (at the moment)so we sadly have to fall back on people who had not been trained for this type of situation. The GOSL is in a no win situation; damned if it allows any breach of the peace, damned if it doesn’t. Sadly, now, the naysayers, both foreign and local, will tell us ‘I told you so’ re the behaviour of the armed forces. Whither are we bound to as a nation? (Only the people of SL can answer this question).

Army can’t shoot civilians under any circumstances. The fact that lay people are not even aware of this and they are mouthing international war regulations is a painful reminder of how militarised our sick society has become.

When people of south fired crackers to celebrate victory over Tamils by Maras regime, one of my colleagues said that the same thing will be done to Sinhala people by the same paid soldiers (Moneyvirus not Ranaviru)on the orders of Mara and his sweet brother Minimaru Gota. It was very clearly proved in Valiveriya. No one can stop this move of Mara as all political parties,Religious leaders and majority of Sinhala population have either supported of kept silence when a mass scale of attrcities that had been committed especially during 2007,2008,and 2009 in northeast by Mara.Mara will never give up or allow others to come to power due to fear of retaliation when considering the huge amount of corruptions and crimes committed by him and his family members.Mara distryed everything of Tamils including the dignity and made them beggers. He issued 5 KG of rice to each person who were brought to Kilinochchi facribly to take part at the opening of the police station. Some sections of people had refuse to accept it saying that they were not beggers as they lived in their own land with wealth and dignity. But the Moneyvirus have forced them to accept them by reminding what happend to their love ones in the recent past.God has to save the Sri Lankan people.
