To the Politician Named ‘Gnanasara’ And His Allies

By Rasika Jayakody

Rasika Jayakody

A mosque in Grandpass came under attack last night and a police curfew followed. The attacked mosque was a newly built one located next to a Buddhist temple in Grandpass. The land, apparently, belongs to the Urban Development Authority. Earlier, it had been assured that the mosque would be relocated within a period of one month but that never happened. Members of ‘Sinhala Ravaya‘ took law onto their hands and threatened to relocate the mosque all by themselves. That was the starting point of the clash.

Last night, when the attack was underway, allegedly by ‘Sinhala Ravaya’, a fear loomed large in the minds of people, both Sinhala and Muslim. They feared a repetition of ‘Black July’. They feared ‘mobocracy’. They feared death, incendiarism and looting. The curfew was on on time unlike in July 1983 and the situation was brought under control within a few hours. Nevertheless, several people were hospitalized due to injuries. Blood was seen.

There were some alarming signs. Grandpass is an area where Sinhalese, Muslim and Tamil communities live in almost equal proportions. When the mob started pelting stones at the mosque, Muslim youth too, rallied around the religious place to counter the attack. That was a perfect recipe for a bloodbath. In the final analysis, Police and the Special Task Force succeeded in preventing butchery though there are several unanswered questions. Why weren’t any of the attackers taken into custody? Why couldn’t the Police nip it in the bud? Those are two pertinent questions. However, the STF had assured the Muslims in the area and they would ensure security for the place of worship. That assurance eased their tension.

Is this the end of the story? No. In all likelihood, there will be a similar clash again, someday somewhere, sooner rather than later. That clash, in all likelihood, will be more intense and will result in more destruction. More blood will spill. And police, in all likelihood, will not be able contain it, and certainly not within a few hours.

I am a Buddhist, by birth and by choice. Buddhism does not advocate violence, under any circumstance. Buddhism I know will not oppose having a mosque right next door to a Buddhist temple. If the mosque is being built in a land that is not legally acquired, there is a law enforcement mechanism to deal with it. Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Muslims and Burghers can seek refuge in the law enforcement of the country in the face of injustice. If one’s grievances do not harm the interests of those in power, justice, in all probability, will be meted out. In that context, no one can justify hooliganism by Sinhala Ravaya or Bodu Bala Sena.

There were provocations in this country since 1949. Almost every provocation was followed by retaliation. Retaliation, more often than not, outweighs provocation and that was evident in July 1983. Essence of Buddhism teaches one to handle provocation with prudence, without making it an entry-point for carnage. Sinhalese acted with great self-restraint after 1983 in the face of chillingly brutal attacks by Tigers in Colombo and its outskirts. When the ‘Dalada Maligawa’ was attacked in the Buddhist heartland of Kandy, not a single stone was pelted at Tamil Shops in Colombo, or any other place in the country. Something that we, Sinhalese, can be proud of.
I don’t see any Buddhism in the conduct of Bodu Bala Sena or any other extremist Sinhala-Buddhist movement. I don’t know whether there’s any Islam in the Muslim extremism too. In the same way, I did not see anything Hindu in the LTTE. What is going on in Sri Lanka at the moment is a political project in every sense of word. With all due respect, I must say that Gnanasara Thera and his allies are great politicians. Time, I think, will further affirm my convictions.

Yes, our fingers are free. We can point them freely at Bodu Bala Sena, Sihala Ravaya, Ravana Balaya or Muslim extremism, according to our whims, fancies and beliefs. Moreover, we can blame President Mahinda Rajapaksa or Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa for treating the Bodu Bala Sena and other extremist organizations with velvet gloves.

While pointing fingers at them, did we ever look into ourselves? What have we, the citizenry, done, in our capacity, to rescue our society from the quagmire it is sinking into?

What have we done to identify the root cause behind extremism? What have we done to propagate our values – of which ‘moderation’ is an integral part – to the future generation? What have we done to create one ‘Sri Lankan Nation’ in which different nationalities and communities can safeguard their identities and uniqueness? What have we done to wrest the history of ‘Sri Lankan Nation’ from spin-doctors and manipulators who inflame religious and communal violence by perpetuating falsehood? What have we done to assimilate everyone who occupies this land, regardless of their ethnicity, religion or community, into the heritage of the ‘Sri Lankan Nation’?

We haven’t done anything. We have held candle light vigils. We have organized organizer-less rallies. We have been trying to reclaim our old arrears from the Rajapakse regime. We have been dancing to the tunes of opportunists, separatists and NGO-mongers. We have been having fun, frolicking and acting like fools. Moreover, we have acted like a 21 million tombstones, and not like the ‘Citizenry’ of this country.

Right you are! The attack on the mosque is to distract the people from the militarization of Lanka by Gotabaya Rajapakse and massacre of people innocents by the military at Weliweriya.
It has always been the plan of the Rajapakse brothers to divide the communities of Lanka – and distract the Moda Sinhalas when their regime starts failing… That is why they have been cultivating, funding and patronizing Balu Sena and Ravaya Balaya whose leaders should have been arrested long ago.
BUT The Rajapakse regime is now in its ENDGAME. Gotabaya and his brothers are cooking their own goose and will be cooked in their own fire… BLOWBACK IS THE NAME OF THE END GAME!

The culprit in BOTH the Weliweriya military excesses and the Balu Sena’s and Ravaya Bala attacks on mosques is the same: GOTABAYA RAJAPAKSE who should be tried and put behind bars.
Gota the goon is PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE in Lanka today.

The fact that not a single member or leader the Balu Sena and Ravaya Balus who have been on the rampage against minorities for months have not been arrested and tried for Hate speech and disturbing the peace is because they have PATRONAGE and SUPPORT at the highest levels – from the paranoid murderer, the so-called Defense Secretary who is PUBLIC ENEMY no. 1 in Lanka today. He should be arrested and tried in open court.

From Islamic History, we learn a lot. “kaffirs” must be killed. Their women must be raped. Their properties must be taken over by Muslims.

In Syria now the Islamic Jihadists who fight against Al-Assad kill the minority Kurdish people and rape their women.

They openly tell Allah give them these women to enjoy!

You Muslims are minority in Sri Lanka but always fart with your jihadist policies.

Muslims never talk human rights or peace because you cant find those things in Quran anywhere.

During his life, Muhammad gave various injunctions to his forces and adopted practices toward the conduct of war. The most important of these were summarized by Muhammad’s companion and first Caliph, Abu Bakr, in the form of rules for the Muslim army:[7]

“O people! I charge you with ten rules; learn them well!

            Do not commit treachery

or deviate from the right path.

You must not mutilate dead bodies.

            Neither kill a child,

            nor a woman,

            nor an aged man.

Bring no harm to the trees,

nor burn them with fire, especially those which are fruitful.

Slay not any of the enemy’s flock, save for your food.

You are likely to pass by people who have devoted their lives to monastic services; leave them alone.

M.SIVANANTHAN – Muslims never talk human rights or peace because you cant find those things in Quran anywhere.
Read the book Islamic Jurisprudence: An International Perspective is a 1988/1996 book by Judge Christopher G. Weeramantry.
The aim of the book is to present how classical Islamic jurists attempted to develop a comprehensive body of human rights principles and practice, as well as a corpus of international law principles.
            Here’s a summary.
“Islamic jurisprudence is a much misunderstood system. This misunderstanding is due to lack of information and to centuries of prejudice. This book seeks to present information, not at present available in a single work, on the pioneering efforts of Islamic jurists to develop a comprehensive body of human rights principles and practice, as well as a corpus of international law principles. The attempt to develop such international law principles long anticipated any similar work in other legal or cultural systems. Human rights doctrine based upon the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet was expressed in terms which will strike the reader as surpassingly modern. In international law, Islamic treatises anticipated the work of Grotius by eight centuries. This systematic exposition, not attempted before in such detail, will be of interest not only to the Islamic world, but also to philosophers, historians, sociologists and political scientists world-wide. All students of international affairs would likewise benefit from this book.” Jurisprudence: An International Perspective is a 1988/1996 book by Judge Christopher G. Weeramantry. The aim of the book is to present how classical Islamic jurists attempted to develop a comprehensive body of human rights principles and practice, as well as a corpus of international law principles.

Is it a Civilized Religion ?

Grandpass mobs who attacked Prayer room just practiced Allah’s Islam only.

Can any Muslim say anything wrong with that ? Following Isalamic teaching is wrong ?

Can’t you see what these Saffron Terrorists are doing?

Buddhism may be a religion or philosophy but the Buddhism in Sri Lanka (Sinhala-Buddhism) is not a religion, it is Paganism and Barbaric in nature. The Sinhala-Buddhist monks were Barbarians turned Terrorists.

The Buddha Balu Sena skin headed Monk-eys (punks) are Buddhist Saffron Terrorists and they are practicing Barbarism/Terrorism in the name of Buddhism. Buddhism in Sri Lanka is nothing but Barbarism/Terrorism and should be banned. These Buddhist Saffron Terrorists should be hung upside down and shot like dogs and all the Buddhist temples should be demolished and destroyed. A Barbaric religion such as Buddhism should not be allowed to continue because it is producing more and more Saffron Terrorists.

The Sinhala village idiots go and dump all kinds of food to the temple for these Bastards to wolf down, and once they turn into skin headed fat pigs, lazy doing nothing, the big fat bold headed saffron Terrorists come out to show the world what kind of Buddhism they are practicing in Sri Lanka.

Our country will never come out of all this mess as long as these dirty, lazy, racist, skin headed Buddhist Monk(eys) are allowed to do what they do. These are the Barbarians who destroyed our country right from the beginning. As Sir John Kothalawela once said, these Bikkhus deserve to get TAR applied on their heads. Given a chance, I will not only apply tar on their bold heads but also on their buttocks, and then push the brush inside.

These so called guardians of Buddhism (Saffron Terrorists) are actually the ones who are pushing the religions down the drain. The WORST among them are the so called big fat bold headed Buddhist punks like the Gandasara.

The main problem is, most of the so called Buddhists in Sri Lanka are morons. When they see an orange or yellow cloth/robe anywhere, even wrapped on a broomstick, they start bending into different shapes to worship them.

These so called Buddhist monks or rather Saffron Terrorist Punks are not only destroying Buddhism but also the country. They are the main cause for all the problems in Sri Lanka. They should be made to stand on a line, hang upside down on their saffron robe and shot like dogs. The best thing a democratic country can do is, put these skin headed punks in a cage (jail).

Buddha did not talk political power. That was a reason how the Buddhist empires were collapsed and destroyed.

But what about Islam? Full of racism and criminal ideology!

How the Islam treat other religions?

Sri lankan Muslims always support all the atrocities by Al-queda or any other Islamic criminals.

Buddha Gaya was bombed.Bamiyan buddhas were bombed. In dirty Bangladesh, Hindu temples and Buddhist veharas were destroyed.

Did these Muslims ever open their mouth against those atrocities? NO. Why?

Why are you not condemn the catholic church which is allied with LTTE? Ask everyone to hang Rayappu, Thomas Soundaranayakam and others upside down and shoot them!

Further you are a Tamil and why are you hiding behind a Sinhala name?

So your excuse for what the BBS is doing are perceived historical faults by Muslims and ongoing faults in other countries? You might want to both read the Buddha’s teachings and learn some common sense as well.

Of course if we are going to follow your line of reasoning what are your solutions to the government sponsored corruption across the country? The Noori murders? Do you think we should get a mob together and avenge this or let the justice system deal with it (assuming a proper justice system of course)?

Rasika Jayakody asks, pertinently, ‘What have we done…?’ A question many of us must have asked ourselves.

Sadun says that Mr Jayakody is an Old Anandian, & thus a representative of a very special school which was founded to promote & safeguard values that made this country unique.

Maybe as one who was nurtured both at home & at school in such an atmosphere (& whose words here testify to his holding such values dear), Mr Jayakody could be a prime mover in bringing together some distinguished old Anandians to give their mind to what both they & we could be doing, even now, to help stem the tide which threatens to overwhelm us again.

Perhaps their sister school, likewise, could take similar steps, & bring some of their best minds to bear on this burning problem.

Schools have so many associations, but do they have any that are concerned with PEACE in this country? I would ask the same of old Pupils’ bodies. They have dances & get togethers for charity, but do they ever address the kinds of questions Rasika Jayakody raises here?

I, myself, am unable, I confess, to suggest anything at all.

Care to elaborate on this “uniqueness” of Sri Lanka you seem to be so proud of? Is it the repeated violence perpetrated on the minorities since independence? Or the absolute erosion of core democratic institutions in the country? You seem to be one of those folks from the majority, who thinks beating a terrorist outfit is reason enough to be considered a world super power. Let me enlighten you. If anything its the old nalandians and anandians who are the leaders in this country now, overseeing the burial of democracy and demonisation of the minorities.

Looks like u & yr fellow traveller dont recognise irony when you see it.
            Confucius he say:
‘Man who spews venom from behind mask,
will drop his pants & run away when battle begins.’
            From the safety of a pseudonym, AA repeatedly — ad nauseam — castigates the villains most of us are aware of, offering no useful ideas to begin to take us out of this mess;
& u (& he) assuming I must be either a Sinhala V or of the “majority” community, imply that I support racism/racial violence (against the smaller communities in this country), when, in fact, I have even put my life on the line in certain situations to oppose & stop some of the horrendous things that have gone on here…like ‘the burial of democracy and demonisation of the minorities.’

In fact, I probably belong to one of the smallest minorities in this country, & even my right to have a university education here was denied to me because of that!

Icoomend your article to all law abiding citizenry who do not have religious extremism of any sort ,now this is easy to say it all depends on a persons back ground ,education upbringing and social status , in a multi religious country like ours ,the fanatics will fan the religious flames first against the Muslims next may be christians and then the hindus and we all need to make a stand collectively for the victims in this war of religions if not later they will come for you and no one to shoulder and bear your cause . Like in Hitlers Germany first they came for the jews and Idid nothing next they came for the poles , etc etc and then they came for me . and no one to take my cause .

”Retaliation, more often than not, outweighs provocation and that was evident in July 1983” ???

Cyril Mathew was attacking the Tamils all over Sri Lanka since JRJ came to power in 1977. Particularly in 1981,1982, April/May/June 1983.
Just try to remember the army attacks in mid-July 1983 in Jaffna peninsula on civilians.

What was the provocation for July 1983 please?

That was a planed “pogram” of UNP,LTTE and Catholic Church to strengthern the UNP.

That is why LTTE joined UNP in 1987 to destroy any settlements for Tamils. In four years LTTE forgot Cyril Mathew or the burning the Jaffna library? What a nice people!

Why do Tamil parties always join UNP even they beat the Tamils?

If there is an issue about the location of the Mosque, there are courts and avenues to handle that situation.
Thugs and ignorance goons, do not take matters into their own hands, to cause violence and terror.

If the Rajapaksa government can send in the Army, shoot and kill innocent civilians, who only asked for water,
why then cannot they STOP or control a bunch of bigots with violence in their minds? Why is there such a disparity in the way they handled both situations?

“why then cannot they STOP or control a bunch of bigots with violence in their minds?”

Why would they stop the goons when the Rajapaksa government is the one which commanded them in the first place?

You cry for the destruction of LTTE by Rajapakse?

Violence will be defeated by violence. That is a simple formula.

Islam is full of violence and bigotry. They preach hate everyday against others. That may be the result!

Is this man of indeterminate parentage vying with Malinda Seneviratne for hypocrite of the year or what?
CT do you print this drivel in the name of “balance” or what? Is this a balance for the “good” and, if so, does it fit into the “bad,” the “ugly” or both?

A very pertinent question. According to public information the police had warned the mosque officials not to have evening prayers. If this is true, they knew about the impending attack. Why was it not nipped in the bud?
We know that the army was ordered to shoot protesters at Weliweriya. If this is to be the norm, why wasnt the army sent to Grandpass to deter the attackers, in a more serious confrontation?

Dear readers! The author here has said that he is a Buddhist by birth and choice. He is clearly proud of it. But he has failed to add that he is a Sinhalese by birth and a racist by choice.
Being a racist, he probably experienced pangs of violent fury when there were LTTE terror attacks on innocent civilians, but he himself refrained from attacking Tamil civilians in retaliation, leaving that to the army, who are institutionally charged with killing minorities.

You ask “what could be done…?”

Looks like its going to be difficult to do much judging from the results of people asking for uncontaminated water at Weliweriya.

What do you think could be done?

One thing i am going to do among friends is Call for “Stop feeding Busdhist Monks” propaganda.
.. Non BBS types monks have more responsibility and ability to stop those BBS type foolish monks than us. We can force them by making them starve.

“Buddhism does not advocate violence under any circumstance” says the author.
What then is the use of an army or police force – these must use violence whenever necessary.
Killing enemy soldiers is permitted according to Major General Ananda Weerasekera formerly of the army, and now a Buddhist Monk.

Everyone is asking why does not President or Defence Secretary do something about it, whatever this IT in people’s mind. But the plain truth is the request is a waste of time when the same everyone is implyinh that the two very same perosnalities are the instigators of all trouble in today’s Sri Lanka. They instigate the trouble, and then supress them by repression, thug rule and illegal use of the security forces, then pretending to the world that they are in control.

“I don’t see any Buddhism in the conduct of Bodu Bala Sena or any other extremist Sinhala-Buddhist movement. Time, I think, will further affirm my convictions”

well said . may be it is time this Ganasara spends some time in a jail .
just because they where the robe they dont deserve our respect .

    Rasika,

You are proud to be a Sinhala Budhist. You also state ‘we Sinhalese can be proud of.’ Well, well, well, isn’t it the same ‘we vs. you’ mentality that has brought matters to the present diabolical state of affairs. Your inbuilt racism could not be masked under a subterfuged article written on the same style as Malinda Seneviratne et al – who have a great capacity at praising MARA while ostensibly doing the opposite.

How terrible, that you blame the Tamils for ‘Black July’. This type of analysis is atypical of infantile and ineffective chauvinistic politicians who always blame the minorities for the errors of the majority.

When reading your previous writings I thought you had foresight, but shame to say, like what other commentators above have said, you seem to lead us all on the proverbial ‘garden path’.

are you an idiot or do you have an infantile brain ? there was a chain of events that took more than a 100000 lives due to the idiocy of tamils and Sinhalese from 83 to 09 .why is your stupid brain stuck on black july . or white july or the purple one !!

      • 0
        0

Yeah? Why is it that Jews are stuck on Hitler and the holocaust? Why do Tamils keep thinking about the 83 pogrom? Why don’t they forget it all? It would be so nice for my conscience and Abhaya here too if people didn’t remind us of it. Then I can start afresh and commit further minority massacres and it will all be the minorities’ fault.
