Two New Deaths During A Mourning Week: Jaffna Mourns!

At the backdrop of mourning for the hospital staff who were shot down during the IPKF rule some 29 years ago, this month of October on 21st, allegedly by the IPKF, and religious rituals for the slain Tamil journalist Nimalarajan, who was killed 16 years ago this week, two more youth met the same fate, reportedly gunned down by the police in Jaffna near Kokkuvil, Friday at about 11.55pm.killing-of-two-jaffna-university-undergraduates-in-jaffna-kokuvil

The apparent shooting was not confirmed to any till the postmortem report was released midst fear and tension.

Some noted that there were incidents where two gangs brandishing swords had clashed in daylight in Jaffna town a few days ago over, where the deployment of more police patrols were needed to further tighten security.

The two Jaffna University Students Pavunraj Sulakshan (24) and Nadarasa Gajan (23) of Chunnagam and Kilinochchi respectively, had crashed on the nearby wall, when one received a gunshot.

The JMO Dr. Majutharan said there were no traces that they had consumed alcohol. He also said that he heard they had not stopped the bike when ordered to stop.

It was Thursday (20) at about 9.45 the two friends left from Chunnagam to Jaffna. On the way they visited a friend in Kandarodai and was proceeding to their private hostel. When they passed the checkpoint at Kokuvil, Kulappidy junction in Jaffna, around 11.50pm, the next minute they were found in the pool of blood and the motorbike rammed into the wall.

The matter of having a gunshot injury was confirmed by the Jaffna Court Magistrate at about 9am. However, local media received a fax at 1pm on Friday 21 that the two died in a road mishap and pronounced dead on admission.

It is alleged the police took the two seriously injured students to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital and they were pronounced dead on admission.

The news spread and tension mounted as the people living in the Kandarodai area heard gunshots. This transpired and the fellow university students rushed to the hospital to find out whether they were shot down.

The message also reached the TNA Leader R. Sampanthan who at about 3.am rang the President who was in Trincomalee for a Buddhist ceremony at a famous temple.

Despite the news spreading in Jaffna that one had received a gunshot that caused the motorcycle to crash on the wall. President who rang the IGP Pujith Jayasundara received confirmation early in the morning it was an accident.

This was also reported to Sampanthan. However pressure mounted on the TNA and everyone rang him and confirmed it was a gunshot that had lead to death.

When this matter was reported to the President, he once again phoned IGP Jayasundara. The gun shot message was confirmed by the JMO by then.

The agitated President then urged the IGP to hold impartial investigation.

The students who gathered around the hospital mortuary were not willing to accept that it was an accident that caused the deaths.

The IGP who deployed a team of police arrived over the President’s order which added to the mounting tension at the hospital premises.

Students did not want the police, the very same body that was accused of the murder to enter the mortuary.

However, the fellow university students were requested to be calm if they wanted a proper investigation to be conducted.

The Court Magistrate and the Police had then called upon the deceased students’ parents (fathers) and informed what had caused the death while others were watching what was going on.

The secretly shared message was that the boys were shot down and there was a gun shot wound in the rider’s chest.

They assured the fathers that the matter will be dealt seriously and to calmly take the bodies of their sons to their respective homes.

Having heard the assurance also given by the police that were deployed, the parents had then taken the bodies to Chunnagam and Kilinochchi.

Agitated students were ‘controlled’ and ‘restricted’ not to riot over the issue, by Tamil authorities.

The University students had been gathering and holding meetings till late Saturday how to plan an awareness protest over the displeasure they had over the incident.

With regard to the incident five police officers were taken into remand custody including some Tamil police officers.

The next hearing on the shooting incident will be held on Monday at the Jaffna Magistrate Court. (Myrna L.)

Why should IGP’s inaction surprise you? It is part of the political culture of police, politicians, state functionaries, … and their b***s carriers.

      Your expectations are misplaced.

        Native Vedda,

“Why should IGP’s inaction surprise you?”

The IGP was not present when the incident happened. He initially received false information from the police in Jaffna. Do you expect the IGP to know what is going on in all of the 400+ police stations around the clock?

According to the police there are special patrols now in Jaffna due to high crime rates.

My experience is that after dusk the main roads of rural Jaffna have some mobile check points of 5-6 police men and some of them carry a pistol or revolver but not a T-56. I assume that this is what the police does in other parts of the country also.

Two young guys driving around mid night on a main road in Jaffna are bound to be stopped by the police.

shall we see whther the IGP will dismiss from the police force who you say gave him false information.maximum that will happen is they will be transferred from jaffna to badulla where they can beat up some more tamils who refuse to give them haircuts at the police station, and beat up children who come and complain of being raped by sinhalese and lock up people in the cell and find them dead the next day.

Nice to see Tamil politicians and other web based opinion services trying to put a communal angle to this incident.

A tragedy indeed. But this is Just down to bad policing in sri lanka. we have seen this in every part of the island. Remember embilipitiya? the killing there by police of the youth. They could not even find the OIC later.

By this Article and other Tamil politicians now trying to rake a communal and Tamils oppressed angle here Typical.

The Response should be to Reform the entire police methods thorough out the nation. But hey Politics as usual

All three were accidental. That will be the result of the investigation when the report is published in 2026.

why are the police carrying roaming the streets of Jaffna armed?

            Rajash,

“why are the police carrying roaming the streets of Jaffna armed?”

Are not some police men and police women armed in all parts of Sri Lanka? Actually it is surprising that unlike in most countries not all of the police in Sri Lanka are armed. In many countries even private security guards are armed.

You live in relatively peaceful UK where only 10 % of police force have received weapon training and allowed to carry a gun if needed.

If you read about shootings, stabbings etc in Sri Lanka you will understand why some police men and police women are armed.

            The police needs better training.

Only some years ago the police in Jaffna carried T-56s and were in addition escorted by armed solders. The situation is better now.

Tamilians from all over the world should Raise against and Expose this killing by the security services of SL which supposed to protect people and not snuffing the young lives.

The young students did not venture out on their own but went In twos to protect each other.

But how can you protect any numbers when these callous so called security forces out to kill all to cover up their crimes .
Kill without witnesses is their method then plant or destroy evidences including fabricate and produce Fabricated evidences to protect themselves.
All happens allegedly under the noses of hierarchies, who aid and abet.

Young boys lives are taken away , Young women and girls lives are destroyed again by Rapes . All by these so called saviours suppose to be protecting TAMILS??

This news of two boys death has been received with Luke warm rection as always from Singhala Folks.
There is no condemnation or dissatisfaction.
This is the reason the country continues with hate and deception and eventual war.

What’s wrong with these people do they not have any views ??
Even when their own men women or children get murdered by the security services , they remain MUM.

Is it something to do with the preachings??
Is it something to do with their brain dead attitude??
God wake up people? Does it have to be your own family for you to wake up and protest.

Any one else’s life too must matter , Lord Buddha’s preaching says Love thy neighbour.

Why drag USA into this. The gun laws are different over there and most citizens carry guns whereas in ‘Sorry Lanka’, it’s the forces, police and the criminals do. Moreover, Sorry Lanka is smaller than most states of the US.
Sri Lanka should be policed by unarmed police.

Idiot! It was you who accused that the boys were drunk as if you were there to hold the lamp for the postmortem. If you dare, just come out with your real name. Hiding behind a pseudonym, you are propagating all the trash when there was a clash between some Sinhala and Tamil students few months ago. If you want to live in USA, go live there.

I know you are a bullshit generator. Noboody in this Forum would expect any sane contribution from you. Would you say the same thing above and be happy if Sinhalese boys are regularly shot by police? Can we start from your brothers, and even you?

GOD! No wonder you have to hide behind a pseudonym. This kind of ponnayas should be exposed and shamed.

      Burt:

The deaths of two youngsters in such tragic circumstances is heart-wrenching. We all want answers, the right answers. But taking it on the IGP at this early stage is grossly wrong. He (IGP) may have answered based on information he may have received at the time.

Think of it this way – that it is based on the PMR of the JMO that it was ascertained that one of the deceased had been shot. The President had ordered an impartial inquiry and the IGP had dispatched the CID to enable a thorough investigation. Instead of jumping the gun, let us wait for the investigations to be completed and then we can say our piece. This moment belongs to the families of the deceased who in their deprivation have all the reasons to feel incensed and angry over the the overwhelmingly tragic loss. Let us not make it worse.

THE STORY SUMS UP TO A CONCLUTION THAT TAMILS AROUND THE GLOBE AND ISLANDWIDE SRILANKA SHOULD TAKE ARMS ON THEIR HAND. PROTECTION IS BY THEMSELVES.

    • 1
      5

And then VP and Pottu will take you all to Nanthikadal with others who haven’t taken up the arms yet, and take cover behind them when 60,000 approach the 600 from all directions. Only at that point were they realized the benefit of at least some not having taken up arms.

Didn’t we learn something through 30 years of nasty experience?. A force don’t have any experience fighting a real enemy from outside but torture and agitate its own citizenry all along. When they retaliate like what you just suggest, they brand them as terrorists and take on entire minority. They commit war crimes with total impunity and when real heroism comes to light, made possible by none other than the ones who were part of the killing squared but now they saw an opportunity to make some money by distributing such cruel scenes videos to foreign journos, it is hard to defendable yet they try to fool the world what has happened collaterals. A half-naked girl being taken out of a lagoon walking and talking, unfortunately next frame shows her body, lying in a swamp, looks cold blood still oozing. This is what our heroes say collateral and our leaders say heroism. Even to find out whether what they say is right, they don’t allow a IMPARTIAL inquiry. Even President seems to accept inquiries having been conducted were mere eye wash, understand it is not his fault as we all used to it so he sees the need to add the word impartial. Such was the predicament the minority faces and living under such conditions require a bit more thinking than encouraging the young ones to take up arms.

It is a tricky situation, as not many right thinking men are in politics and a few such ones took up politics use it make money, not to do the rights by the country. Unfortunately the majorities are thugs, really they are…if a man who made a joke about our past president saying he would take her saree out and let her run on streets naked can made to a ministerial position in a government that she was the linchpin it to form, what else would not happen, and can be call this government has no thugs but all gentlemen. Who to place the trust on, the president who came to power with the good governance slogans now sees independent commissions are no good. There is no sincerity, all trying to pass the time being in power. Real politics it seems.

Be wise, don’t try to use the younger ones as cannon fodder. First ones to see this happening will be the people like MR/Got/FH/DJ/Gna and Co, they need a tiny opening to take on LTTE.

        Aia,
Pottu and Praba didnt run away safe while their people were struggling to death. They were not sitting in AC rooms while their people were fighting for life. They were also fighting as average people among same brothers and sisters. They had the high degree of integrity what heroes should have. I dont think any world history has heroes like them. Did mahinda, gota or sarath how it feels when the world given away them and they are only strength to fight for life of their own people. Without the support of Pakistan, China, Russia, US and Europe do you sinhalese believe you would have won the war?

What was the end result? Okay,VP and Pottu didn’t sit in their AC rooms. Okay, they both fought. Okay VP was not relaxing in his swimming pool. Did their 11th-hour participation make any difference?

Whys did VP surrender? Why didn’t he bite cyanide that he forced the baby brigades to bite and die?

Where was the man with petrol can who was supposed to pour the stuff and burn VP’s body?

Why his lifeless body was not burned?

          Where is Pottu Amman?

“Without the support of Pakistan, China, Russia, US and Europe do you sinhalese believe you would have won the war?”

Sinhalese didn’t win the war. VP won it for MR and Sinhala/Buddhists.

Yes, we have to look at the option of parting ways because there appears no better solution in the horizon but if it is through gun diplomacy, then it should be a big NO. There should be no sacrifice of innocent lives on either side.

Whatever said and done, the IGP should have checked with every source,
before he gave the false reply to the President of the country. He also
probably knew that Mr. Sambanthan, Leader of the opposition was behind the President’s inquiry and still gave a don’t care reply to the head of the State,

The IGP is aware that so many high ranking police officers of the past Govt. are under interrogation for giving the reason for Thajudeen’s
(with due respect to the deceased) death, as an accident where as it is proved now that it was a well planned murder and still he gave a vague reply to the head of state.

Do not know whether the President and the IGP realised that it was a
shocking news for the people of the North, where normalcy is returning
slowly, after decades of mistrust against the armed forces, specially the Police and it is unbelievable that a Policeman raised his gun to shoot at a rider on the public road, when the intelligence people have confirmed that terrorism does not exists in N/E at present. More
alarming news is that they carry loaded guns on the streets, instead carrying the bullets on person as our understanding is an order has to be given by a senior official in the rank of Inspector or similar rank to shoot at a civilian, doing nothing wrong.
Lets wait and see as to how the President will react to this incident
and in the meantime calm and sanity should prevail in the North. Poli-
tical leaders should cool the situation, instead putting them up on
the streets and get them to face the consequences. They should realise that the parents have either mortgaged their house or property to
send their children to Jaffna Uni.as poverty prevails in the North.

Firing of two Jaffna University students are backfiring up to two years back, as far as as to Washington DC, White house. Tamils tried to explain Secretary Kerry about “Sinhala Only”, which moved to Banada – Chelava pact, which resulted in 1958. That is Tamil were the one paid the price at the end. When Tamil demanded an IC inquiry into the war crimes, Secretary Kerry pumped ethylene prematurely and said the “Government is changed and Tamils have to give time to the Good Government to act”. He is a person being consulted by the Sinhala Intellectuals stationed in Boston and Washington DC. He lives like that he doesn’t know the cheating of the Appe Aanduwa. That is why this yesterday’s shooting took place in Kokuvill. When Tamils and TNA asked for the army withdrawal from North-East, they invented Suicide Jacket, Sampanthar breaking into a sentry point of Paravipaanchaan, and so and so…. When Tamils asked to shut up these check points, the flagship stations of the Sinhala Chauvinist symbol of occupation of Tamils’ land, and allow them to move freely within their land, now they claim have shot two persons of “LTTE, drunken, suspects in drug dealing and sward wielding, and failed to stop at their check point”. This is all what Secretary Kerry’ good office has got to Tamils for their call for Justice.

Now, Secretary Kerry is about to leave the White House after obstinately mishandling the Lankawe issue, without achieving anything for US or not doing any help at all to Tamils. Tamils were looking for a change in Bush administration so that they could have some justice against Secretary Condoleezza’s partiality of working with the Lankawe government. Now Secretary Kerry has said, the said good things were not having been done because someone in the SLFP opposed it. Certainly it is new to Secretary Kerry that SLFPyers or UNPyers could block anything good that can be a done to Tamils, because he is only advised by Ambassador Atul Keskap and consulted by Boston and DC Sinhala Intellectuals. But the sad fact is he was obstinate when Tamil tried to bring this to his attention before he leave the post. He had refused learn it before his job coming to an end. That is another disappointment in the Tamils’ road to seek justice from the time Lord Soulbury handed over Tamils’ fate to Sinhala Leaders without any justification.

Police IGP was not aware there was bullets flew away from their guns. It was a medical JMP invented that a bullet has flown out of policeman’s gun. Well, how is that happened? How did they come to know that the bullet flied from the gun went to victim and penetrated his body? Any evidences? That is easy and simple to solve our Appea Andus’ defense department. Because there were Tamil police officers! So they arrested these Tamils. It was these bloody bad Tamil polices has reported that it was LTTE drunkards without stopping at a check point raced and hit a wall and died. How much bad are these Tamils or on the other side, how much good are these Sinhala story telling polices and justice system? They are constantly, one after other, pulling out and throwing lies just in whatever the way their mind think and mouth can utter. If the grieved families failed to counter any of these lies with proof, then that one becomes the true explanation. This is the Sinhala Intellectual norms from EP, PM to and ordinary constable. This is how the Appe Aandu’s defense department is set up to function.

Defense department has said these murders are not unusual. They explained that these are happening in South too. At last some truth has come out of the notorious defense department. We’ll have to admit with defense department that it is not a strange phenomenon in Lankawe, where the defense department is drawing money from tax payers to protect them, at anytime, anywhere, for any reason a civilian can just be shot to death. And further, this is not the first time defense department is saying that too, but sans one thing, this time they say, in their murders, they really do not like to differentiate between Sinhalese and Tamils. Anyway, that is only a word of the defense department. Being true is excruciatingly painful for them.

    Their contention is:

    “What?

    A Murder?

    What is the big deal?

Bring a bulldozer and bury the body!”

This is a Buddhist country, where they don’t hang people, as a modern style of 5th Century BCE, but there are no defense personnel to condemn a murder. What contradicting, funny comedians are these defense Sinhala Intellectuals, strange spice on this earth, walk with two legs and eat with hands?

I don’t want to write this. I do not take responsibility of anybody’s security. But it is in public media. People concerned, by their luck or unluck, had left it to go up to media. So I decided to mention that too. The police who accidentally allowed two LTTE drunkards to hit on a wall, went to their families home and threatened that the families have to be shut and put with it and they will pay the cost to get rid of the bodies or otherwise………. Interesting, isn’t it?

As defense department claims, this is not the first murder of Tamils and neither happening only in North. Further, at least one more thing as truth as these words, that is, these are happening because Secretary Kerry’s arrangement of investigating the war crimes internally. This War crime investigation, which was held up by Prince Zeid, the High Commissioner of UNHRC in March 2015, by blocking the tabling of OISL, now is ending with zero, but had started with the number five as Pancha Paanadavar, when he offered his personnel guarantees that he will make sure that the investigation will take place.

Secretary Kerry has said that the people in SLFP blocking the things from advancing, so they are not moving forward. We saw that earlier too. To block the investigation from moving forward, the defense department shot these youngsters to create and float a tiger Ghost out of them. And, in the southern township of Kegalle, an army intelligence officer named Jeyamanne also has been sacrificed to stop these advancements of investigation. The Lankawe’s EP, New King has sacked the person who investigated some other crimes activities embedded with war crimes, but outside of it. We do not know if that was sacking or a promotion by internal arrangements. Further we do not know if the woman sacked also a future target in the stoppage shooting of the investigation. But only we can say is to repeat what media has already said as truth. The SLFP EP is last and highest prominent SLFPyer who has played role in stopping the progress which Secretary Kerry indicating as being done by SLFPyers. It seems too difficult to deny that New King knows the names of the proposed victims. And further it is not yet denied that he sees his name also in that list. But it Nadarasa, Pavun Raj or Jeyamanne were not in the lists. They are only the “grasses and shrubs the priest has chopped and tested the sharpness of his sward” before he cut and conquer the Banana tree in the Manampoo celebration.

Like our defense department, US state Secretary Kerry also correct in telling that people in SLFP is blocking the advancements. In this new wave of incidents so far no plaintiff, no defenders, no prosecution, nobody connected the investigation of this matters are shot to issue the threats. The matter of investigation is not even at the starting level. So to think about of what will happen if the investigation really starts is really a nerves breaking painful experience.

We don’t want this talk of internally investigating the criminal and keep sacrificing our youngsters like yesterday. We need R2P activated to North and East. We need UN investigate the war crimes. It is UNHRC brought it out. They need to dance and finish the Kavaddy parade. They should not put it on others shoulders and walk off. That is not just simple wrong but extremely dangerous to the Tamils to whom they proclaim that will do justice.

There is no Justice will be given under the Sri Lanka Constitution to the Minorities.

This kind of killings are normal inthe west.

Latest NYPD killing highlights de Blasio’s history of defending the police
    By Isaac Finn
    22 October 2016

The New York Police Department’s (NYPD) recent killing of Deborah Danner, a 66-year-old Bronx resident afflicted with schizophrenia, further exposes the failure of “progressive” Democratic mayor Bill de Blasio to stop the wave of police killings.

NYPD Sergeant Hugh Barry and five other officers arrived in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx on October 18, after Danner’s neighbors reported a problem. Following a confrontation in which Danner picked up a baseball bat, Barry—an eight-year veteran of the NYPD—discharged two shots from his service revolver, killing the elderly woman.

Hey Jim Shitty, why don’t you go and hang yourself somewhere and put your sorry arse out of all this misery? Nobody likes you and you are a disgusting vile slum dweller and a filthy hog.

you constantly whined about LTTE suicide bombers killing the innocent Sinhala. Suicide bombers killing the innocents are normal in the west. Why were you whining earlier that LTTE suicide bombers were killing Sinhalese, since its normal in the west.

Hello – JO Dang Sathutuda? Police have every right to shoot the cyclists if the cyclists did not obey the Police Orders. Can you all remember what had happened to SARGENT NALLATHAMBI !! The cops who shot the cyclists do not know the law or they were excited. They should have claimed the responsibility then and there rather than hiding the facts. Then you make the coroner’s work very easy. The coroner may declare JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE. Police cannot do their job here because politicians have taken over the case. bye – Nihal Gunatilake

      @Nihal Gunatilake

May be this jungle law is accepted by Sinhalease

Police must first a warning shot

Then can chase them they have powerful bikes .

Even call inform next check point to stop

Police can’t shot and kill .simply they are Tamils …

These grade 5 qualified SL Sinhala Police and card board security forces they can do anything to Tamils and escape .sorry this is not possible. Most of the Sinhala Police are ideal for kudu business they don’t know what is law and order .

Where were you and your Sinhalese when Muderpakse and Murderpaya send killing squad to Welikada prison and massacred Sinhala prisoners ? Shivering and pissing ?

      Cheers

Cholan – Why go thro’ all this. They could have stopped the riders
at the next junction if they used their radios and warned the next
police Station. It is simple as that, as motor cycles cannot fly.
Police did not find narcotics nor firearms on them,so its a clear
case of not noticing the STOP signal or sign by the rider.

The most disgusting thing is what amount of guts, the Policeman had, to raise the riffle and shoot at a civilian, without hesi-
tation, knowing the rules that must be practised in peace time.

He probably served in the North during the War and used to Police orders then, which was ‘shoot to kill’, which accounted for
thousands of civilian deaths on the roads. This cop should not be blamed fully as the Police probably have not briefed their cadre that the war is over and for them to return to normal practices,
        like not carrying loaded rifles.
This is a period for reconciliation and it is advisable that the
cop and the IGP, personally visit the families of the deceased and apologise for the unfortunate incident.

Hey Nihal Gunathilake, you are talking poppy cock. Police can only shoot if there is immediate threat by the bikers either to themselves (police) or some innocent bystander. Get the law and facts correct before you talk stupid. You cannot open fire on people who are running away from you. You engage the threat with deadly force, only if needed, not if you just like it.

This is what happens when you hire hoodlums and dumb hicks and put them in a uniform and arm them with high powered rifles. Maybe one day, when your son (if at all you have one) while disobeying the law gets one in the ‘back’ then lets see whether you will say the same thing. Bye – TFN

This will be the next ‘Thajudeen’ case to be taken up by Rajapakse when he comes back to power! He should arrest the present IGP and the accused police and parade them with hand cuffs in the same manner how the police of the Thajudeen’s case were arrested for false evidence and paraded with handcuffs in glaring public view and aired on all TV channels.

We should vote for Rajapakse if he promises justice for the families of the recent killings in Jaffna. Pujitha your days are numbered!

If something similar had happened to two boys in the south no one would have made such a big fuss. Some racial minded scoundrels are waiting for some thing to happen to interpret it as discrimination. There should not be a different law for Tamils. WHY did the policeman want to shoot at the boys? Just because they were Tamil? What nonsense! Do they expect the government to treat the Tamils as `super citizens`?

Aia, Whatever you say sinhalese are humans of destruction. There are two kind of humanity in the world, the races who wish other humans to live peacefully and the races who wish the destruction of others. Sinhalese belong to the 2nd one. They cant tolerate even their parents to be happy if they are in trouble. They dont want to see others enjoying the things which they are offered. In the name of buddhism they create problems to others. The religion called buddism followed by sinhalese is nothing more than nuisense to other humans. Its ultimate foolishness to believe that a sinhala leader will protect and give all the rights to minorities. The only thing left to Tamils is to take arms and fight for rights eventhough Tamils were destroyed in 2009.
It is much satisfying to die by fighting than licking someones legs for survival.

The best way forward to build our tiny country is not arguing Singhalese or Tamils are right, many Singhalese have Tamil blood in them. Say both right. The important institutions like justice, police etc. should be independent of political interference. That way the high calibre heads can be appointed. We can’t blame IGP in this instance because, if he did not cover-up this incidence in behalf of racist government, anyhow he will loose his job, branding as traitor (Singhalese traitor disturbing racist government agenda of supressing Tamils or cover-up all killings). Army and government failed to save doctors and patient from death by so called peace keeping force.

The grade 5 educated Sinhala police not only killed these Tamil youths but also tried to cover up knowing well that Sinhala government will and promote them.

Thanks to the neighbors who have alerted the public and university students.

Beginning of dooms day for Sinhala nation …

    Cheers
