UK Tamil Community Set For Mass Protests As Sri Lanka’s Controversial President Confirms He Will Attend Olympics

By Jerome Taylor –

Sri Lanka’s controversial president will travel to London for the Olympic Games in what  could spark mass protests from Britain’s Tamil community, The Independent has  learned.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s spokesperson Bandula Jayasekara confirmed today that the 66-year-old president, whose government has been accused of committing war crimes, is planning to come to Britain shortly and may even attend the Games’ opening ceremony on Friday evening.

Mr Rajapkasa’s presence in the UK has often prompted large demonstrations from Britain’s Tamil community who accuse his government of carrying out widespread atrocities against civilians and combatants during the 2009 war that finally wiped out the Tamil Tiger insurgency.

The United Nations says both sides committed war crimes during the conflict’s brutal close which brought the Tamil Tiger’s three decade campaign for an independent state crashing to the ground.

Investigators found evidence that Tamil Tigers used child soldiers and civilians as human shields whilst Sri Lankan government forces stand accused of deliberately shelling civilian areas, summarily executing both Tamil Tigers and civilians and committing widespread sexual violence.

The threat of Tamil protests will inevitably be of concern to the Metropolitan Police because of the community’s ability to field huge numbers of demonstrators at such short notice. During the 2009 war, Tamil campaigners used mobiles phones to launch a surprise occupation of Parliament Square that lasted more than sixty days.

During Mr Rajapaksa’s last visit to Britain for the Queen jubilee, hundreds of protesters brought traffic to a halt when they gathered outside the Commonwealth and a hotel in Park Lane where the President was staying.

Historically Britain and Canada have been the two most popular destinations among Tamil refugees and critics of the Sri Lankan regime. As a result Britain’s Tamil community often had close links to Tamil nationalists and the Tigers themselves.

The Sri Lankan government has long accused the British authorities of not doing enough to clamp down on Tamil Tiger support and fundraising. Despite the growing wealth of evidence – including videos showing summary executions and evidence of sexual violence committed by its soldiers – Colombo has vehemently denied committing war crimes and publicly criticises those human rights groups and journalists who suggest otherwise. It has yet to allow the UN to conduct an independent investigation of war crime allegations. An independent investigation commissioned by the Sri Lankan government, meanwhile, was widely criticised by human rights groups and foreign governments for being partial and partisan.

Tamil activists contacted by The Independent today said it was likely new protests would break out if Mr Rajapaksa came to Britain.

“It is wholly inappropriate for Mr Rajapaksa to be invited to Britain and particularly the Olympics,” said Jan Jananayagam, from Tamils Against Genocide. “There is credible evidence that his government is responsible for ethnically motivated crimes against humanity and continuing persecution of other ethnic and religious groups in Sri Lanka. Just this week we released a report showing how government institutions such as the police and military under his command are involved in a systematic network of politically motivated disappearances as well as abduction for ransom.”

Suren Surendiran, from the Global Tamil Forum, said they were looking at possible legal avenues they could pursue against the Sri Lankan delegation when they arrive in Britain.

“President Rajapaksa might be getting away from being arrested by hiding behind the cover of being a head of state, anyone else joining him with blood in their hands must know that we will deploy the full breath of the legal instruments available to us upon them,” he said.

Suz, you are Honestly bloody Pathetic. For one thing you can not write properly and coherently in English. Why don’t you seriously attend some English classes to improve you command of the Language. Further, see the filth you respond with. Absolutely shameful, to say the least. Whatever said and done the planned trip to the UK for Olympics by MR and his cohorts has been cancelled. Now you are sulking like little children. Shame! Shame! Damn Shame! It is not the Tamils that have to do for MR, what you have proposed, but MR will have to do for the Tamils. I am sure this is also possible for MR, provided if the Tamils acomodate him because he is also a shameless bugger as you are. It is simply Disgusting.

Pathetic is you who fail to fathom that English is not our (or yours) mother tongue. Just because you went over to the UK and learned a bit your self, doesn’t mean the others have to do so. remember your own self prior to you visiting the west – Do I hear you call yourself “pathetic”?

Rohan K. I learned my English here in this country. I have not been to UK for your information. Why, is it only those who go to UK knows English fluently? Is that your estimation? Besides why should I consider myself as pathetic, because I use correct usage of English? Or is it because I do not sing hosannas to MR? Your type of mind set is certainly Pathetic indeed!

How about your leader Prabhakaran the loser is he not a criminal?? Don’t insult our President. The losers like you LTTE supporters why don’t you come to Sri Lanka and tell the same thing in public. .. Just try and see. Without doing this hide and seek games like children…. Yes we know you all don’t have brains to think.. Feel so sorry for you and your friends……… :(

Agree with Kamalini’s post. I am not with MR and his goonies who steel our wealth. But, when it comes to the war, I am 100% and more with him. It is nice to see that some Terrorists are still hurting within big time. At least their part of LLRC is sorted never to use violence again. It indeed are the spineless LTTE supporters who would chuckle in the safe havens of the west instead of making some noise in SL. that’s where you respect people as R. Sambandan who has the balls to stand up to what he believes is right. Good or Bad, when MR visits overseas, he represents us and no spineless Terrorist supporter would get my support to harm the president who represents us.

        ponders with her brain.

“How about your leader Prabhakaran the loser is he not a criminal?”

He was a criminal and was a terrorist too.

It is interesting that a most wanted criminal terrorist was not caught and brought to courts where he could have been cross examined and proven his guild. The Sri Lankan intelligence instead caught, tortured and killed innocent civilians. That was a great achievement in itself. The men were truly intelligent being.

        You say:

“Yes we know you all don’t have brains to think.”

Of course stupid Sinhalese and stupid Tamils can’t think.

I had to accept you too have brain but its in the wrong place. In other words you are sitting on it.

It is interesting to see who the other leaders of other countries who will visit the Olympics in the UK. I know some of the people who are visiting the UK for the Olympics with their spouses. These individuals are oblivion to the hardships the masses are going through with power cuts and even forgoing proper meals. These individuals have the audacity to be immune to what the masses are undergoing, to visit the UK at the expense of the masses. What Patriots we have, with no Shame and Feelings.

For MR he never cares about tax payers money. Sinhalese majority has given him the right to use all the resources

Further, India is still feeding and looking after our refugees, 3 years after the war.
The West is still hunting down the LTTE fund raisers and have imprisoned them.
Not a word of Gratitude by any Sri Lankan Yet.

Sri Lankan Tamil people will continue to lack credibility in the eyes of many as long as the LTTE in exile continues to dominate these demonstrations. The LTTE flag deters like-minded people, be they Sinhala, Tamil, black or white, from showing their support.

The LTTE does not accept that their methods were always wrong and their objectives were never relevant to the majority of Tamils. Their legacy is bloodier than Rajapakse’s.

Who would dare to demonstrate against the LTTE, I wonder?

    • 0
      0

I totally agree with your comment. The best way forward for the Tamil people to be heard is to denounce LTTE immediately. they have so much of options even as we speak like with R. Sambandan. but then again, they are divided amongst themselves on support. One would go behind a Sockalingam and another behind the apparent Royalty currently living in Denmark etc… So, nothing flowery in the near future.

        Rohan K

So you have come to the conclusion that the Sri Lankan state and its rulers could not come to a reasonable settlement with Tamils because they are divided.

So why is MR wasting his time inviting Tamils to participate in PSC? Forget the Tamils and their leadership. Why does MR insist on a settlements with Tamils? He can just ignore them.

Can he not find a solution without the participation of Tamils and implement them unilaterally?

Please bear with me as I am bit thick.

Mahinda Rajapaksa should try to minimize the Deficit than wasting unnecessary funds to travel to London, with a Plane load of people to watch the Olympics. This man is mad and the Tamil Diaspora is alos mad to go after another mad man.

Mahinda’s best friends are the West-based, pro-Eelam demonstrators. The more LTTE flags and screams about genocide, the better it is for MR, back in SL.

Here’s another fake hunger strike being undertaken in London by a convicted drink driver, dope smoker and “Tamil youth activist”, Gobi Sivanthan. I wonder how many pounds he’ll lose on this crash diet for Eelam.

Tamils don’t want to believe that they have become international jokers.

It is simply like the melodrama of Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha to fool the 65 million living there.

Tamils clearly show that they are very aggressive and confrontational people who are dieing for negative attention.

      This is good news.

How long you been claiming all these allowances?

Could you give us a break down of number of Tamils and Sinhalese refugees in Australia claiming all these allowances.

By the way why do you worry about a country which once belonged to my cousins, just like Sri Lanka belonging to us until the asylum seekers from Sinhapura arrived in the island by kallathonies.

If you are an asylum seeker and in Australia, what the hell are you doing in my cousins’ land?

well done. you know all the details. probably you are one of the claimer and having luxury life and commenting only about Tamils. go and see the statics, you will get to know how many Tamils, Sinhalese, Muslims from Sri Lanka sought asylum. what a shame here is, Tamils wont change their birth name to claim refuge unlike most of the people from other race changed their name to Tamil’s name so they can easily granted for asylum. brush up your knowledge… Remember one think, Tamils seeking asylum because they have really a problem. but for others? no reason to ask… but you all are asking.. its really a shame for Srilanka because of you people. not by tamils

Protest against MR is fine with me. The guy is wasting our tax money by flying off to London for this and that.

However, I wonder where all these self proclaimed HR activists of the LTTE Die-Ass-Pora were, during 30 years of war crimes against Sri Lankans by Tamil Tigers.

LTTE Die-Ass-Pora’s HR outrage is highly selective. They were busy justifying LTTE war crimes for 30 years.

    • 0
      0

      Ben Hurling

      You are mistaken.

Relatives friends will continue to protest not because they are LTTE rumps but because they have lost their loved ones. They are unable to bring the whole tragedy to a closure because a lot of them do not know whether their husbands, children, parents, relatives, friends are still alive or dead.

If dead, they would like to know more about circumstances surrounding their death.

About nine months ago Sinhalese in Hambantota organised a protest march demanding the where about their children who were missing since 1987 – 1991 period. Have you ever met these people who live a life of dead.

If you cannot help these people mourn properly please stop being a smart arse/ass. At least you make sure you don’t hurt them again and again for no fault of their own.

        Native Vedda

I don’t think Ben’s argument is against genuine protesters, rather those who hold up Tiger flags while demanding human rights. I am sorry, but that is like holding up a Taliban or Al-Qaeda banner up demanding rights for Muslims or women! Human rights cannot be cherry picked. If you stand for human rights, then you must stand for those rights for all, and also be willing to see and denounce violations by all.

When you hold up the flag of a known terrorist organization, and demand human rights, I am sorry, it is a little hard to take seriously! In fact, this is what has made the life of MR etc so easy!

For a true resolution in Sri Lanka, we need the Tamils to stop sticking up for the Tigers, and the Sinhalese to stop supporting their corrupt governments. Until that day comes, both the Tigers and GoSL will continue to thrive on the sufferings of the masses. But to me, the hypocrisy brought about by the ignorance of the masses is as much the cause of all the problems in the country as the corrupt and opportunistic leaders of the two sides. If the people unite, then the leaders will have no choice but to unite. But as long as the people stay divided, and ignore the wrongs of their side, while screaming out against those of the other, more and more of both sides will continue to suffer from the wrongs of the others that their supporters keep ignoring or defending…

          Defends Ben:

“I don’t think Ben’s argument is against genuine protesters, rather those who hold up Tiger flags while demanding human rights”.

Ben knows precisely what he means.
This is one of many common traits that the stupid Sinhalese and their brethren the stupid Tamils continue to share. They cannot bear the thought of even a slightest dissension. Both stupid people have one common gift that is to cow down the dissenters either by violence or emotional blackmail. The history of this country stands witness to its intolerance. From deporting Up Country Tamils, killing of trade unionists, unleashing the armed forces and armed thugs on innocent civilians all over the country irrespective of region, committing war crimes since 1971, ……state sponsored pogrom against minorities …. ..such brutality take place with impunity under the very noses of elected politicians. There were two recent incidents in which two innocent people were killed and many were injured, one at Katunayake and the second one near Chilaw. Those people didn’t fight with AK 47 for separate state. Those protests were about their livelihood. Both Sinhala and English papers were mute in fact few blamed the victims. Have you ever made a point of meeting those victims? I am sure you would have joined Ben in condemning the victims.
LTTE and JVP didn’t parachute into Sri Lanka from sky nor from another planet. Hence they too took even the slightest dissension very seriously. The state, LTTE and JVP had/has no qualm liberally naming their opponents a “traitors”. In your case you too don’t want to address the fundamental issues. JVP and LTTE were/are the product of Sri Lankan history. Until you address the real issues you will continue to see LTTE and JVP manifesting in one form or another.

If you look at the post independent history of the island you (only if you are open minded) would have noticed, time to time Sri Lankans creates bogeyman. LTTE has been the bogeyman. All Tamils have now become your whipping boys. If there is prolonged drought in the country it has become customary to blame the LTTE Diaspora rumps, in other words all Tamils.

Please stop blaming the victims and confront your own perception of the country and the rulers. State of denial may be very comforting to you but it will not solve any problems.

          Native,

On your statement: ‘Please stop blaming the victims and confront your own perception of the country and the rulers’

I wasn’t blaming the victims, simply stating the fact that victims also play a big role in allowing the rulers to continue creating more and more victims. This is not a phenomenon unique to Sri Lanka. The use of patriotism and ignorance to continually oppress people while still getting their support is the norm globally, even in states that claim to be free and democratic like the UK and US. You yourself show great bias and anger. Perhaps instead of telling others to be open minded here, you yourself need to take a long close look at where your views and anger come from?

Interspersed in the bigoted ravings of the usual cast of semi-literates on both sides of this issue are finally the voices of reason. Until the Diaspora recognizes that the LTTE and its symbols are universally discredited and reviled the moral authority of their message will be unquestionably poisoned and courage and self-introspection to acknowledge that, at the end of the day, the LTTE has been the biggest disaster to befall the Tamil people left in Sri Lanka and that any meaningful future redress of their legitimate grievances will hinge on a complete and brutally honest re-evaluation and re-structuring of the strategic framework that is employed in their pursuit of justice and a lasting peace. The toxic LTTE baggage is by now completely irrelevant and a huge impediment to a pragmatic, effective political process. It simply stimulates and perpetuates the worst instincts and actors on the other side instead of combating them; completely stupid and self defeating. New flags and symbols are needed that are forward looking and seek out the moral higher ground instead of the same old blood soaked rags.

Ltte was best thing that happen to Tamils, let me explain why, you see Tamils are people who believe anyone that talked good , LTTE exposed that those who spoke for the goodwill of tamils, only their mouth spoke not their heart, it exposed the true face of International Community, India, Tamil Nadu politics and most important of all the sinhalese hard liners disguised as “moderates”, LTTE taught Tamils a lesson, a lesson which has laid the desperately needed foundation for their struggle for self-determination.

But this Sinhala baudha mindset govt show no genuine interest in building cement relationship among all races, religions, casts and creed

Nothing has changed in North & East when LTTE was there except NEW highways, buildings, bridges, tourist attractions, Budha statues and sinhalized signed boards.

Pre-LTTE era, one’s rights were denied & violated by LTTE & GOSL armed forces. Now only exception is LTTE is out the picture, but still the scare mongering tactics are carried out by Ex-LTTE pro-govt ministers and their goons with the blessings of GOSL Govt and armed forces.

Okay the rest of the world is full of stupids. Therefore we will strive to keep pace with them in numbers and quality. Thanks for your support to keep the people ignorant enabling the stupid leaders to get away with murder, corruption, crimes and everything morally wrong, leave alone legality of their actions.

Now of course you agree with my humble assertion that people of Sri Lanka irrespective of their race, religion, region are irredeemably stupid. I am yet to meet a Sri Lankan person who is wise, humane, full of understanding, egalitarian, above parochial nationalism, generous, ….respecting fellow countrymen,…….

When push comes to shove all Sri Lankans are basically inhumane, bigots, greedy, nationalistic, racist, caste conscious, xenophobic, ……..ungrateful, ………genetically stupid.

The stupid little islanders always had/have plenty of respect for white man/woman than their own fellow countrymen/women. Indians also share this unique attributes of their genetics. When will they learn to respect their own people at the same time giving due respect to foreigners (particularly white people)?

Bashing LTTE, JVP and the state and its rulers on a regular basis is our “sacred duty” (whatever it is). I also believe the JVP, LTTE and the state are the product of history. By their own action or inaction people are responsible for their own destiny according to democracy (Karma). If people continue to chose their leaders in their own mould and then to complain about their leaders which I would consider as bit rich.

For eight measures of free grains people voted JR to power with unprecedented majority. People elected SWRD a descendent of Kallathonie Madurai Nayaka dynasty on the promise that Sinhala only language policy would be implemented in 24 hours of the election. Now it seems most of the people are in agreement including nationalists that it was a mistake. When IPKF was fighting LTTE Premadasa and his security forces provided covert support to LTTE. Now many in the Premadasa gang believe it was a misguided tactics.

The only way forward is to restore the democratic rights of all people. The diaspora LTTE supporters could be a minority. They should not be the scapegoat for not democratising the state. The majority community has lot to lose if they do not actively restructure the state. Then don’t blame the LTTE and JVP for all the ills of the country.

Finally my point is that stupid people deserve stupid leaders. In the Sri Lankan case this is a proven fact.

      chilling fields

The people first became stupid then they used race, religion, region, language, caste, class, qualifications ……….. to express/justify their stupidity.

I am bit thick however the above is my observation.

The problems you have raised are the norm with humanity. We are programmed to put ourselves first. Somehow this leads to us being selfish, and seeing ourselves at the center of the world, with the whole world revolving around us.

It is this that allows even the most ‘holiest’ of human beings to carry out and justify inhumane behavior. Our egos become God.

Politicians using propaganda and rhetoric to win votes is the norm in any democracy. Essentially more gullible (or stupid) mass society is, the easier it is for the politicians to remain in power (two major parties that change from government to opposition every few years is still a dictatorship in my eyes!). It isn’t so easy to blame the voters, when the voters don’t know any better. They are kept gullible (or patriotic and foolish) by establishments so that they can continue to remain in power. This is no different to how religions work. So it is nothing new…

You say you haven’t met a great human being from Sri Lanka. Have you met one from anywhere? Name one country where people refer to politicians as ‘great’, as opposed to crooks? Yet most who live in democracies take pride in the fact they live in democracies. Ticking a box every four years or so makes them feel important. It all makes no sense! For democracy to work, mass society needs to be intelligent and wise, so that those elected into power can be held accountable, with failure being punished with job losses similar to those in any other profession. Yet how often do politicians, all over the world, continue on in politics, failure after failure?

What we need is a true revolution in democracy. But for that, the masses somehow need to find a way to smarten up. That, under the current democratic model of the world, goes against the best interests of all global leaderships. So what we have is a catch 22, and as a result, a human future filled with more and more meaningless patriotism, bigotry and conflict. Or as you put it, lots and lots of stupid people…

May I correct your concluding remark:

All Sinhalese and all Tamils are stupid.

Sinhalese and Tamil are just labels. Being Sinhalese or Tamil doesn’t make one stupid, it just exposes them to brainwashing from their relevant communities which are significantly biased and ignorant. But then, what society isn’t?

This is more pronounced in Sri Lankan society (compared to say in the west) due to a lack of proper access to decent education and accurate information. All the more reason why it is important that expatriates from both sides, who live in places with better access to the ‘truth’, stop playing stupid for personal gains and start speaking up for what is truly right. Any Tamil expatriate who claims the Tigers were ‘freedom fighters’ is just as much a phony as any Sinhalese who claims the current (or any of the past) Governments of Sri Lanka are ‘heroes’ of the nation.

Such expatriates are not stupid. Juts opportunistic, selfish, and plain evil. They are not mourning lost ones, just stirring more and more conflict and suffering in Sri Lanka, so they can continue to reap the rewards of war, while living the high life overseas.

      Navin Weeraratne:

Please read the following article published in Groundviews:

Jayasena and Rajakulendran: Heroes of a Lesser God

      http://groundviews.org/2012/07/28/jayasena-and-rajakulendran-heroes-of-a-lesser-god/

I will comment on your comment later as you know my wife is nagging me to mend the leaking roof and collect some more honey. I must go now.

By the way I am informed that there were 7 competitors in the Olympic team from Sri Lanka are accompanied by 32 hankers on.

      Perhaps the 32 include minister’s mistress her brother, brother’s wife, wife’s sister…………………….

My people should be encouraged to participate in archery. You bet we will bring all the gold medals there are for archery and more. I am sure Sinhalese and Tamils will not like it. For them “it is not enough to succeed but others must fail- Gore Vidal”

Sir, perhaps you never rose above the sewer you lived in and met people of the calibre of Prof. EOE Pereira.
