The official spokeswoman of the US Embassy in Colombo decided to do an interview with the Gotabaya Rajapaksa aligned Derana TV without the knowledge of other US Government agencies Colombo Telegraph learns.
The interview happened while the rumour mill was in overdrive that Gotabaya Rajapaksa had not yet sorted out his US citizenship issues and his lawyers released multiple sets of documentation that made things even murkier.
Colombo Telegraph learns that the decision to have Nancy Van der Horn on Derana TV which is owned by Rajapaksa campaign manager Dilith Jayaweera was not endorsed by other sections of the US Government.
If the US Embassy needed to clarify matters based on ongoing public debate about a candidate’s eligibility to contest the presidential election, it was unclear why they singled out the Gotabaya Rajapaksa aligned television network, analysts said.
As a reward Derana TV broadcast the interview and published it on the internet claiming that the US Embassy had confirmed that Gotabaya Rajapaksa was no longer a citizen of the US. However, at no point during the interview did Van Der Horn claim that the SLPP candidate was no longer a US citizen causing another cycle of discrediting of the Rajapaksa campaigns claims on citizenship.
But the collusion with the Rajapaksa aligned network has buoyed suspicion that the US Embassy in Colombo is working hand in glove with Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s campaign. Led by Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz the Embassy is hoping that their support in this matter in the event of a Rajapaksa victory will ensure leverage for Washington under a Gotabaya Presidency that will help to keep Beijing’s influence at bay.
First signs of an emerging nexus were revealed in May 2019 when former US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Robert O. Blake praised former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa during a speech to apparel exporters.
The discussion was organised by Milinda Moragoda’s secretive Pathfinder Foundation an ex US citizen. It caused shockwaves because Blake was strongly critical of the Rajapaksa regime when he was serving as US envoy.
But at the discussion former Ambassador Robert Blake hailed Gotabaya Rajapaksa for his handling of intelligence services and told the ruling government that it should follow his example.
A prominent businessman organised a dinner for Blake to which the former Defence Secretary was also invited. Oddly the ex US Ambassador also praised the Sri Lanka Navy and received a memento from the former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda. Blake said that the Navy had not been implicated in human rights abuses but Karannagoda himself is about to be served indictment for conspiring to murder 11 young boys the navy abducted for ransom in 2009. The effective date of surrender of citizenship signed at the bottom is dated Aprl 17th 2019 but on top it reads the effective date of surrender of citizenship as May 3rd 2019. Did US Embassy screw up this in a hurry by issuing a certificate in advance of the surrender of citizenship to protect Gota or was it pre planned by US to put Gota in trouble? No one signs and issues a certificate in advance. Ample example of this type of certificates are available on inter et and none of them have been predated.

To submit an application to renounce the citizenship, the applicant must be out of the country and should possess another citizenship. But the problem with Old Brother Prince is he never had his Lankawe citizenship reinstated after renounced it during the acceptance of American citizenship. So US cannot accept his application, neither can approve it. The case is in Supreme Court, SL. US state Department has to wait for that verdict to start processing the application.
For all the fraud done under oath so far (in applications alone) two life is too little.

( I read some translation of this interview. I was only about embassy spokesperson explaining the procedure of cancellation. I do not remember it going into anything specific details of Old Brother Prince’s cancellation. At start the spokesperson had said he/she understands the concern of the voters, but internal law of USA does not allow talking about the individual circumstances. I don’t know why, and then Derana’s Sinhala Translation did that kind of work. After declaring at the start that US would not allow disclosing personal information, the spoke person is unlikely to give out any information of Old Brother Prince’s Application. So there is nobody’s confirmation is necessary to do the simple guess work that it was Derana played the Gilmart.
Asad Sally gave another interview in Tamils, repeatedly asking if Old Brother Prince is really against to MCC, ACSA, SOFA,…… then can he openly declare so. Whether the citizenship renunciation was successful so far or not, Old Brother Prince is with America; nobody now suspecting about that. She also said the final step from renunciation point of view is the applicant receiving renunciation certificate. After that the person becomes a FORMER citizen. She also mentioned that a former citizen’s name appearing in the list mentioned is a totally different matter handled by different agency purely for other US domestic purposes such as US Revenue Service (Tax Agency) etc. Gota has received his renunciation certificate. Therefore now he is a FORMER US citizen. People can go to courts only for propaganda purposes. Which is clearly evident from the fact that they waited till the last moment to obtain maximum propaganda mileage.

My only concern is why does not Gota come forward to an ‘all tv station press conference’ and show the full documentation for total inspection instead of Ali Sabry et al appearing by proxy and showing off from a distance and that only a passport page without details of the owner with word ‘cancel’ on non details entered page. There is one very bad trait that is common to both the United States of America and Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Both are totally lacking in straightforwardness and both are slimily evasive. Gota does not want to answer questions because that would mean incriminating himself. The reason the US does not want to answer questions is that it has certain ulterior motives to do with its cold war with China and its proclivity for meddling in the internal affairs of other countries and imposing its hegemony over them.
I never had any respect for Gotabaya Rajapaksa but did have some respect for the US. But now, after observing the US’s refusal to make any comment about the former’s US citizenship status, I have lost whatever respect I had for that country. Very petty behaviour on the part of a ‘world power’.

Neither India nor China nor America have much interest in Sri Lanka. The USA is stationed in Pakistan and Afghanistan, so, along with India, it has already stopped the influence of China in Southeast Asia. India will never support an independent Tamil or Muslim state in Sri Lanka, as this has implications for restless places like Kashmir and South India. As for China, it has lent billions of USD in “development aid” to many developing countries. Not only Sri Lanka, but Congo, Kenya, Ghana, etc. The objective of China is to ensure access to natural resources, not to contend with the USA or India. The only disputes China has with the USA are islands in the South China sea, the independence of Taiwan, and trade.
