Undiplomatic Diplomacy Of A Presidency

By Hilmy Ahamed

Hilmy Ahamed

The ‘Game Chandiya’ political rhetoric has now reached its peak with the various contenders fighting for their survival in this insignificant election that is going to elect members for the local government bodies to administer the grassroots in the country.  Plenty of garbage is being unearthed in their attempt to clean up the garbage mess within the councils.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Joint Opposition, which has come forth to contest with the pohottuwa symbol, and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) are attempting to show this election as a referendum on the three-year-old Yahapalanaya administration. They have invested well to draw sizable crowds for their meetings and used the ‘fish eye view’ of the drone cameras to exaggerate the visual. It is a smart move indeed, and hats off to the creative publicity team. The number of votes that would be cast for them at the LG elections would decide whether the pohottuwa would blossom or wither away.

Credit should be given to the Joint Opposition (JO), which has kept the momentum high in their anti-government rhetoric throughout the three-year government and has now managed to create at least an outward rift within the Yahapalanaya.

While forcing the Prime Minister to shut the mouths of the young UNP ‘Turks’, the President who walked out of the Cabinet meeting (to answer a call of nature) has slated and blamed the UNP and the Prime Minister with the bond scam and other government failures. The President himself is claiming that the economy has been mismanaged and that he could do better. He also accuses the UNP members of widespread corruption while forgetting that ‘his people’ faced the same criticism during the last regime. Did he not say that he couldn’t do anything about corruption while being a part of the last Government because of pressure from the then President? He is President now, but still says he is not allowed to carry out his duties by MPs in his government? He does not want to take responsibility for any decision the government he is a part of takes, then and now.

However, he seems to have become the ‘kokatath thailaya’ overnight, to solve political, economic and diplomatic muddles that are unfolding within the Yahapalanaya. There would be no need of a Cabinet, Ministers or Parliament if Sri Lanka were to go back to the ‘one man (one family) show’ era.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s thick skin and his ability to ignore the Presidential rhetoric makes one wonder whether he is letting the President dig his own grave.

The President is also claiming credit for the brilliant diplomacy of Mangala Samaraweera and the Prime Minister’s UNP that won over the international community which was threatening to make Sri Lanka a pariah state. This diplomatic success has helped Sri Lanka extricate herself from the black list. Trade concessions too have been offered in addition to relaxing the stranglehold in Geneva due to the Yahapalanaya diplomatic policies. Of course as the country’s Executive and Head of the Cabinet, the President has the right to some credit. If so, then he should also accept the failures of his Government without apportioning them only to the UNP.

The Diplomatic Mess in London:

Brigadier Priyanka Fernando probably is a brilliant soldier who has served the country well. He has been rewarded with a diplomatic posting at one of the best stations as Defense Attaché, but unfortunately, his undiplomatic gesture of slitting the throat of anti Sri Lanka protesters during the Independence Day celebrations in London on the 4th of February has been captured on tape and has gone viral. Calls have already been made by some British Parliamentarians to withdraw his diplomatic immunity and deport him to Sri Lanka. The anti Sri Lanka Tamil Diaspora has been keeping up the pressure. With just one stroke of his finger across his throat, he has tarnished the image of our brave soldiers who not only fought and defeated a dreaded bunch of sadistic terrorists but also provided rescue and humanitarian assistance to the human shield the LTTE used during the final stages of the war. The cries and prayers of the Tamil Eelam Diaspora seem to have been answered to tarnish the image of our valiant soldiers. The anti Sri Lanka group within the international community has now got additional ammunition to target us at the Geneva deliberations and attempt to prove that the Sri Lankan armed forces probably committed war crimes during the 30 year old Eelam war.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs acted fast to avoid a diplomatic confrontation with Britain by suspending Brigadier Priyanka Fernando from his position and calling on the Sri Lankan Army to conduct an immediate investigation. The President with his coterie of ‘brilliant’ advisors overruled and reinstated him to the applause of the so called patriots in Sri Lanka who tried to gain political capital during this election period.

For the majority of Sri Lankans, the Sinhala soldiers who liberated the country from 30 years of terrorism and separatist ambitions of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) could do NO WRONG. Our President played to the gallery probably to garner some votes to minimize the humiliating defeat predicted for his SLFP led coalition by the UNP led United National Alliance and the Mahinda Rajapaksa led G L Peries’ coalition.

There is no doubt that the President is facing immense pressure to increase his SLFP’s dominance at the polls. Failure by his coalition in this election would mean that he would spend the rest of his two-year term as a toothless president who would certainly retire in 2019. A reasonable showing will rejuvenate him to cause a rift within the UNP and try a ‘Mahinda stunt’ by wooing MPs to join his bandwagon. On the other hand, the Prime Minister with his mastery at survival might move to impeach the President with the wholehearted support of the Rajapaksas and the die hard UNPers. Most of his pole-vaulting ‘Ping Amethis’ too would scale the wall to the winning side. He probably would be left with just a handful that would number less than 20 heads.  His dreams of cleaning up corruption will end as a failed mission.

The country was spared from becoming a confirmed banana republic by the bold stand taken by President Maithripala to divorce himself from the party he belonged to for over 50 years. He has confirmed many times that it was the UNPers who brought him his presidency. He mastered a coup by bringing in SLFP seniors who were with Mahinda Rajapaksa in January 2015 and taking over the SLFP. A defeated Mahinda did not attempt to contest and surrendered hoping that he would be spared from all the accusations that were thrown at the Rajapaksa family. No one knows who is protecting the Rajapaksas, the President or PM. The Chief Minister of the Western Province Isura Deshapriya probably let the cat out of the bag by announcing that The President has advised Gotabaya Rjapaksa to leave the country as there was the threat of an imminent arrest. Did he make a mistake, or is it Presidential protection he was talking of?

It is time the President returned to the collective responsibility of his Yahapalanaya concept without over riding Mangala’s beer price reduction, allowing the majority (women) in the country to buy their booze if they wish and choose a vocation as bar tenders if they so wish. More importantly, he should not play to the gallery by creating diplomatic blunders that would list Sri Lanka as Mugabe’s Zimbabwe.

The president probably still considers himself to be the grama Sevaka who could dictate terms to the villagers. Its time Ranil and the UNP locked him up inside the presidential office until his term expires in 2019. He was a good toilet paper to wipe the Rajapaksa shit. Now, one cannot save the paper with shit on it. It needs to be flushed.

        Burt ,

It looks you are too late ! Official results not fully released yet but
social media is all about MARA’s lead in the poll . This country is
now doomed ! No JVP ever again , this was the best time for them
but they were let down by the corrupt general public. MARA insisted
this is going to be a referendum against the government and Ranil
the coward loser , knew this all the way . No need of post mortem to
decide how it happened , it is clean suicide for filthy My3 and Ranil .
They were playing games and were not in politics, the donkeys
        played with people’s trust !

You really want RW and his band of thieves to lock up incompetent flailing MS it would be Asking the “Poacher to be the Game Keeper”.
Remember RW started the nuptials with MS full well knowing that MS was with MR before the trial separation.
So Mr. Clean isn’t that clean since his dealings with ex RB Gov AM. Mr. Clean credibility has gone from Mr. Dirt to Mr. Crap.

Perhaps, the president was trying to play to the gallery to get some Sinhala votes ……….when he knows that he will end up behind Mahinda’s group……

But what must be acknowledged is the way the election has been conducted ………….in deep contrast to the Rajapakse brothers’ thuggery, rigging, violence, murder and intimidation …………..

And the credit should go to both the President and the Prime Minister ………….and the culture they have put in place ……………let’s be honest here; if we can.

Simply put, that shows the breeding/upbringing of the two camps …………….there is no other way to put!

    Hilmy,
You, stop worrying about Mr. Fernando’s rightful action. You must write articles about Muslim extremism in Sri Lanka, Muslimization of Buddhist Sri Lanka, about pig Badudeen who is eating up Willpattuwa, FGM, barbaric Muslim practice of circumcision of infants, people smuggling by Muslims, drug smuggling Muslims, SL Muslims of ISIS, etc, etc, etc. “WHERE IS THE YAHAPALANA ON ALL THESE????”

      Dear Hilmy Ahmed,

So, you are playing your part in building up the image of the butcher soldier-turned-diplomat. There was a time (let’s say thirty years ago) when a Brigadier was a very high-ranking Army Officer. Today, a guy with such a rank would be lower than middle rank. A lot of pampered parasites. The other group that should be in bed with the fellows are the clergy of ALL religions! Notable exception, Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha.

I, for one did not know who this beast was until he made his neck cutting gesture. You say that he is “PROBABLY a brilliant soldier.” Have you ever studied Logic? Had you said “POSSIBLY” you would not have provoked this riposte from me.

      And so, new myths arise!

Oh, for guy who’d write an objective History of Lanka.

      Dear John,

Are you suggesting that Hilmy has no right to express his views simply because of his ethnicity?

As I see it, there is a REAL problem in Sri Lanka, and it is in the minds of its people who REFUSE to accept what is wrong is WRONG and what is wrong is RIGHT if the wrong comes from the right camp/ethnicity/ political party.

Regrettably, the men at the very top cannot fathom the depth of the problem, or prefer not to; thinking it will go away.

It wont. It will only get worse.

Statistic will prove eating the forest is your people’s game, proven extremist are Sinhala Buddhist racist lot, If there had been Muslimization by now Sri Lanka would be at least 50% Muslims, FGM was an African practice now no Muslims following that, Muslims will loathe to have Pol-kudu penis, drug smuggling and selling 95% are non-Muslim, people smuggling are done 99% by organized Tamils and Sinhalese. Disprove mv statement with provable statistic.

    H.A.
As usual a very good analytical write up.
The elections to office to local governments has had a significant change with allocation of 25%elected to office being females.
The central government is basically rudderless with rampant corruption, a culture of impunity and a broken economy.
What is needed is motivated young blood. Unfortunately the present political setup does not allow that. This local government elections is unlikely to end the chaotic situation the country is in.
But we live in “PARADISE” ; Live in HOPE .

You should also insist in deporting all those LTTE cadre protesting , back to SriLanka to be prosecuted under anti terror laws.
They should be vedeoed and their faces carefully studied to exclude whether they are so called missing people.

Britain should clearly assure that ISIS and AlQuida are given similar rights for protesting in Britain

    • 2

Nonsense, a country can’t deport its citizens to somewhere else. People in a true democracy have the right to protest. LTTE, IRA, and Fatah are different from ISIS & AlQuida.

Hilmy’s Arabian Nights, again. Other then the last paragraph rest has to be dumped in Meethotamulla.
”Prime Minister with his mastery at survival might move to impeach the President with the wholehearted support of the Rajapaksas and the die hard UNPers.”
That is his naive technique of wedging between Ranil and New King, using New King’s fear on Ranil. But I would bet with Hilmy on that for $1000.
New King came elected exclusively by UNP, Tamils (all), and Muslims voters. There is no SLFP contribution at all. New King never thought he could get that party. Chandrika stripped the party from Old Kings using party constitution. Not because SLFP rank and file wanted it.
There is nobody other GLP has left SLFP. All juniors and senior leaders are in SLFP. Under 19A, SLFP got some ministers. But for every SLFP minister created, UNP backbenchers will demand equal treatment. There is so much only New King can do for SLFPyers through cabinet positions.
The best he did was (or the blunder was), he let the Old King to manage Parliamentary election. So New King is not responsible for SLFP loss in Sept 2015, SLFPyers can blame nobody but each of them for supporting Old Royals in their looting and demolishing the party.

New King had an opportunity. He could have taken the control of the election; he could have cleaned party the party right before the election and have put better candidates in the election. But by his naive nature, he let the Old Royals to manage it. Thus how the all the old pirates came back and flocked the ship.
The Old Royals, who are inside the party, is destroying the party. New King has handed over the jewelry to a thief to protect. The party (SLFP) cannot be controlled by New King. Now there is no hope of fixing party.

  • 0
    0

First part of this and obvious reason was New King had let Old Royal to manage the last election. That was the dump and weak action of him. That let the feeling to Old King that he was the boss still. So, naturally that has induced him to eyeing for the party leadership. One should understand this difficult question. Old King is not looking for SLFP party as the whole (Party voters, members, funders, candidates…). He just wants to take it over SLFP and eventually convert is as his family party. That is why now he supporting an independent group (Opposing SLFP) in Maharagama. All what he wants is to get the name surrendered to him. Rest he will build up in his own way. One should remember, Old King wants only SLFP, not anybody from there, even Dulles or GLP or Bandula, leave alone other UFPA parties’ members.

The second part can be understood only by those who have the habit on understanding the type Thero De Silva’ of concoction logic. Because, that is what we going to do now to understand what really happened and why GLP opened the Slap Party.
Original promise of Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero and Chandrika’s to win the election in Jan, 2015 was to clean the politics and punish the criminals. They two were ready to take the Army-bull by the horn. The reality was, they two did not have the muscle to do it. Neither Old King nor the Army had any fear for them both. It was Ex American State Secretary John Kerry was offering the muscle to do the job.
SLFP is losing because New King goofed when Ranil was protecting Old Royals. He could have finished Old Royals off when Biswas was repeatedly offering the help. New King need not have brought American army. That might have ended as a political risk.

  • 1
    0

But if had arrested Old Royals and punished them when Biswas was there, Army would not have left out of the barracks. That was the behavior they showed even when India was here. He failed to take advantage of it. He woke up only after the death of Kegalle Jeyamanne. America frequently engages with other countries. So they did not ask Lankawe to punish leaders (, probably not even the Old Royals). But America investigates its army if they make mistake in their engagements. So it appeared it was manly targeting the army brutality, differing from UNHRC, which looked at the genocide as a whole. So it destroyed the 42 war criminals list to save the Lankawe leaders. But New King still feared of America and did not take courage to stand under its shade and take action back at Old Royals. This is how he protected and strengthened the devil which is waiting to eat him. It is going to be difficult for him to get out the lion cage alive. Ranil after making some mistake in the Sep 2015 election campaign, he quickly corrected and sought protection of China. Now he is well and fine.
But Ranil took a different direction. He wanted dupe American Ex Secretary John Kerry and cut America off from the picture. He had his own promises to Old King for the safe passage during the hard time. Ranil had dated all his promises to John Kerry based on his power ending date. His worry was, at that time, managing China against America as a permanent protection, instead just taking care of John Kerry. The Resolution 30/1 date was March 2017. But he purposefully gave his dates to China after May 2017. If he had given the date Jan, 2017, China might have crushed him. He did know the New American Administration can do nothing in March 2017, but to obeying him, at UNHRC.

  • 1
    0

Then Ranil sequentially managed UNHRC in March 2017, Cheated India’s ETCA in May and dragged with China until September…. October. Everything went well on his part. Further he has good protection from police so is not that much scared of Army. So he smoothly washed off the hands of America.
By July 2016’ UN conference, Secretary John Kerry has realized the carpet under feet was pulled off, but it was too late so he just blamed on a section of SLFP. Old King always had confidence in Ranil. He had protected Ranil from Batalanda issues too. Ranil had done very good on ICC and he went to UN to save Old King. So they two are comfortable with each other, unlike they two are with New King. So from November 2016, Old Royals had started on their course of actions. Kegalle Jeayamanne died. Denesh warned that army would rebel. But it was suggested it was only about backed off attempt, not about the future. New King panicked and showed off more weakness; started to suspect Ranil as he was arresting SLFP guys. Cut off from Chandrika and he started all his mismanagements. He never cleaned the party. He never cleaned the corruption. He never maintained the relationship America to counter Army, until Ranil destroyed it completely. By fear and stupidity he has surrendered to devil, while the people thought they were voting for a brave angel. Now the people have lost the confidence on him. He can borrow a cyanide capsule from an Ex. rebel, but he cannot go to Old Royals, seeking support. All what is now left with him it to fall on Chandrika feet and cry “Oh Mother save me”. She probably still is capable patching him back with Ranil, revive SFLP, and isolate Old Devils. Without doing something, if he just hangs around until 2019, then Ranil need not to impeach him. He will be gone.

Soldiers saved Tamil peoples life! Whom are you trying to fool you fake Arab South Indian import? They committed rape torture and untold war crims on innocent Tamil civilians. Asked them to move the certain places and deliberately bombed them killed them in their thousands. 145000. The rest were sent to Nazi concentration camps where they were humiliated starved and raped. Their lands homes and farms stolen by this Sinhalese army and still not returned. Liar. We all know your part in settling thousands of out of area Muslims along the Wilpattu corridor on fake cocked up evidence. You were running around stating around 200000 -300000 Muslims were displaced when in reality only around 60000 were displaced and most of them do not want to return and this 60000 could never have become even 100000 let alone 200000-300000 by 19 years. Whom are you trying to fool you? The most brutal terrorist organisation is not the LTTE but the racist Sinhalese armed forces and the Muslim home guards in the east and the Muslim thugs and criminals down south. They killed raped ethnically cleansed hundreds of thousand of Tamils in the south and in the east. The LLTE put a stop to it in the north. The LTTE are no saints but they were responsible for less than 5% of civilian killings and no one can accuse them or raping. Unlike the Muslim home guards in the east and the Sri Lankan armed forces. You all cry about the Kattadkudi mosque but keep quiet about how it started when Muslims destroyed the ancient historic Sivan temple in Kattankudi and deliberately built a beef stall over this destroyed temple . This action and the destruction of many Hindu temples in the east and ethnic cleansing of Tamil villages resulted in the Karuna group attacking the Kattankudi mosque that was hotbed of Salafist Islamic extremism and the an arms depot for these Muslim home guards , who used to worship there before attacking neighbouring Tamil Hindu villages. We will never forget you backstabbers were dancing and celebrating with the Sinhalese on the streets , on the death bed of 145000 innocent Tamils in the Vanni and beginning of a nightmare for the rest. You people became very cocky , especially in the east until the Aluthgamma incident.

Caw, caw, caw………. here again the Australoid crow cawing again. He cannot write without his “fake Arab story” and pouring venom on Muslim. Tell us who started the killing first, bombing, burning and wiping out villages. Later on others doing the killing is okay if it was self-defence and protection of their families. Where do you think we were living before the start of war, during the war and after the, in Timbuktu? We know all what happened. The killing, rapes and looting claimed by you just fabrication. Even Sinhalese did not rape during riots. If Army had during the end of war, I want defend that but to the extent you claim. Even during war Tamils were living by hundreds of thousand in Colombo and down south. All the Tamils from north who wants to get into western countries on false pretext of refugees came to Colombo got the passport and went. How did they do it if government wants to destroy them? Don’t talk rubbish by fabricating and defending your killers. While some writers pointing out the wrongs and rights in the article, you Australoid crow cawing with irrelevant comment. Caw (bye), caw, caw.

Hilmy ahmed: when I read more and more about what is going between PResident and Ranil wickrmainghe. I think Executive president is PResident only by name eventgough hs is elected by the public. On the other hand, the PM who represents probably only one electorate and by force he handing onto the party leadr position and so got the offer to be the PM is actuvally the most potent so that he is executive president. Because on behalf many threaten PResident for reprecussions if he doe snot behave himself. Anyway the truth on this need to be seen. President has to prove president is executive and not managed by the parliament and PM. I heard ON THE SABATH day truth comes out. Wait for it.

Hilmy Ahamed has spent lot of time choosing the words. His intentions are clear.
He says ~ “…………Brigadier Priyanka Fernando probably is a brilliant soldier…….”.
    Why ‘probably’?
“…………….He has been rewarded with a diplomatic posting…………….”.
He was the Lankan Army nominee. The Commander orders MS “Rescind or else…….”.
MS complies. Nothing more to it.
Hilmy goes on ~ “……………. undiplomatic gesture of slitting the throat of anti Sri Lanka protesters……………… has been captured on tape and has gone viral……….”
Hilmy does not mind the gesticulation but is worried that it has been videoed!
Hilmy again ~ “………The anti Sri Lanka Tamil Diaspora………………..”.
Implies all SL Tamil Diaspora are anti-SL – the Gota principle! They may be anti-GoSL but not necessarily anti-SL.
The Hilmy message is “SL Muslims are not protesting!”

A very clearly written article which requires comments/contributions from the readers to make it a more comrehensive analysis/understanding of what is happening on our name by nominated/appointed/elected officials. How the unfortunate circumstances/ever so fluid political climate (national and geo political) affects them all need to be understood too. This could also be partially limited to personal limitations of the respective individuals we appointed/elected to manage a given scenario(s) too a divided socity. This will invariably affects our nation and her subjects via many avenues putting hold on the much needed “united front” to get her back on the path to progress and celebrating the “natures gift of life” with minimum miseary. I was affected just as all of us by the uprising(s)/riot(s)/war(s) (I am age 54+) as a Sri Lankan citizen. This respective groups/segments of our nation all argued there path as a solution to national problems are too our children lost their way/misguided/taken advantage by geo political system?. We all went through a terrible ordeal since independence to get here as people hoping to shape a better island for human (co)habitation by all?
I am also equally focused/sensitive to some of the comments such as traitors/reference to race or religion/language tamils or singalese speaks for itself as to why we are disintegrating into this ungovernable state too. Then we complain about the leaders for not delivering to the same masses who themselves are unaccountable & irresponsible even in commenting on an article written by a reporter objectively? When the young people of our nation read some of these comments I wonder how we can say we are shaping the future democratically empowering each other for nation building purposes. If this is a reflection of the society we live in and how varied we are in reading the same paragraphs and reach certain/entirely different conclusions and attack each other as suppose to exchange/learn from each other then once need to understand this journey leading to more conflicts and same old vicious cycles too? How a Soldier or a President can connect to such a hostile space for trouble shooting? finding solutions to national issues and laying foundations for better future?? is something we need to be clear about please is my humble request to my fellow countrymen. Time for a respectful exchange of thoughts as some interesting observations were shared by Mr Ahmed merely for this purpose and if something was missed out in his argument Kindly contribute positively such the article could be revised and reprinted too.
