Unless Lasantha Murder Case Is Solved Accused Could End Up As PM Or President: Lal Wickrematunge

Unless Lasantha Wickrematunge murder case is solved accused could end up as Prime Minister or the President, says murdered Sunday Leader editor Lasantha’s brother Lal Wickrematunge.

We publish below the Message read by Minal Wickrematunge at the 9th year memorial on behalf of Lal:

Nine years have passed since Lasantha Wickrematunge was done to death in the most dastardly fashion. Nine years have passed and justice has not been done. Murder, not restricted to Lasantha but of other journalists were carried out with impunity at a time when apathy reigned amongst the people. At present there is a sense of hopelessness at the manner the present administration is handling investigations.

File photo

Should political authorities be guiding murder investigations, one may ask. Some may argue that it is the duty to do so since the very same murders have been used to garner votes at election time. Presently, the murders are conveniently used to remind people of how brutal a regime was when they occurred. But what about bringing the perpetrators to book?

Many such investigations are all but concluded. The need is to arrest the suspects and charge them for murder. Letting time pass by till it is convenient may turn out to be counter productive, as history has evidenced. The last regime was defeated on the backs of those committed journalists who lay down their lives when even those in parliament were quivering before a marauding group in control of every sphere of human activity in our land. Justice need be done not as a favour. Justice need be done to prevent a repetition. Else, they would have died, not for the people but for a chosen few to replace the defeated.

Murder when it is committed by criminals outside of politics are investigated in haste and convictions obtained in a couple of years. Failure to bring to justice those responsible for the murder of Lasantha, could even open the door to the prime suspect or suspects to be elected the President or Prime Minister of our land at a future date. Who knows.

We remember Lasantha who revolutionised the journalistic landscape of Sri Lanka at a time when none dared. He was brave, committed and resolute in his task to eradicate corruption within the halls of government. If the authorities cannot bring justice, let us commit ourselves to perpetuate his name amongst the people on who’s behalf he lay down his life. Lasantha was honoured posthumously by many a prestigious overseas organisation. But that is to be understood. Honour is rarely bestowed outside a singular profession, in Sri Lanka.

I thank all of you who have come each year to pray for the repose of Lasantha’s soul. Let us pray for him.

There is a reason why the criminality of the Rajapaksa is never investigated, never solved the mystery behind their mass murders and daylight robberies and they’re never been reported the way it should have been reported in the Sinhala Zionist Mafia owned Govi media houses (Wijeya and Upali Newspapers TNL, Derana, Swarnavahini, Hiru, Mawbima, Rivira etc etc)…. the golden reason is that they all belong to the Govigama Mafia Organised crime syndicate. The Mafia members, Sirisena and Ranil connected to the fake democratic but fascist political parties of SLFP and UNP came to power with the promise of catching the thieving scumbags of Rajapaksa regime………. But, then after having won the control of the government, Sirisena comfortably forgot or played some drama in catching the thieves…… Instead he played with the lives of the tax payer population by deployment of BBS racist projects in order to divert the attention from his obligations with regards to the many election time pledges. GOVIGAMA MAFIA is having a good time in fooling the entire world……

Radical ideas, you and people like Ralli Ameen attacking Govigamas and Vellalas appear that you both are suffering from inferiority complex. You both took offence at others calling you low caste south Indian converts, but your behaviour gives credibility to what they had stated about your ancestry. Have you heard of any Govigamas attacking Vellalas of vice versa. In fact Govigama families will prefer to enter into marriage alliance with Vellala families than with Muslims. For the paranoid minds of people like you everything happening in Srilanka is controlled by Zionist agents. Actions of your members are the downfall of your community and not others, being hated by other communities.

Last night in the 9 O’clock news, MTV showed an old interview where a foreign correspondent was interviewing Gota when in his pomp.

To an obvious question as to who killed Lasantha or what was the government doing about it, Gota snarled and replied with utter derision and visible hatred pouring out from every pore, that there were other journalists dying elsewhere and just one man dying here was not news and Gota also had the audacity to ask “Who is Lasantha.. who is this man…..” while screeching at the top of his voice in one of the worst interviews I have seen anywhere.

It was such a class-less performance coming from a man who was probably the De-Facto President of this country at the time, it showed up clearly, what a third class state we had descended to!

As Lal Wickrematunge so brilliantly puts it, ” Justice need be done not as a favour; Justice need be done to prevent a repetition………..”. THAT is what we want our lotus eating Yahapalana governors to remember as they show us on a daily basis, how excellent they are at ‘selective justice’. For their proven lethargy, they will pay one day for sure, quite handsomely.

I would suggest that this particular MTV interview be shown on a daily for the digestion of those who are slavish followers of the Rajas and other moronic types who aspire to, or already are governing our country. It is a classic, as to how not to do a responsible interview!

Yes…. The Rajapaksa brothers, the gang of thieves and mass murderers and their organised crime syndicate is a sub division of the mother company the Govigama Association of criminals and political bastards. If anyone has any doubt or in total confusion about WTF is going on….. Just trace the Govigama hegemonic system that was set up by the Zionist British empire to take over from them…… and you will surely ca dig deep in the rabbit hole to unravel the whole mystery of the degeneration of the country and its system.

THEY SHOULD SHOW THAT GOTA INTERVIEW ON A DAILY BASIS, SO THAT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT THEY STAND FOR, AND HOW NOT TO DO AN INTERVIEW.

THE CURRENT ADMIRABLE TREND TO “HAMMER” AT UNPRINCIPLED POLITICIANS – WHATEVER THE CAMP THEY REPRESENT – MUST CONTINUE. THEY HAVE HEAPED SHAME ON ALL OF US AND OUR NATION, AND I DONT THINK WE DESERVE THIS!

Had Dr Gota (DSc) and his boys started a well coordinated spin accusing VP of planing the assassination earlier on when he decided to bump Lasantha off the case would have come to closure.

Lasantha was killed days before he was to testify against gota in the MIG deal. Gota tried to pin it onto fonseka by trying to bribe a intelligence operative with a diplomatic posting to testify against fonseka, but he refused. If gota had succeeded then instead of going for two years to prison,he would have been their for life on death row.

As for Mr.Clean’s statement we know who he has always worked for and protected.

Money politics is the name of the game here too.
All this time of Jarapalanaya govt. Lal and Sonali Samarasinghe have been silent about lack of justice for Lasantha’s murder, aside from a few statements now and then.
Lal Wickramatunge is posted at the SL embassy in Aussi, and Sonli Samarasinghe, Lasantha’s second wife, and now a US citizen is now in New York in theSri Lanka’s Permanent mission to the United Nations, with a plush apartment paid for by the Sri Lankan State that murdered her husband!! justice indeed.
Unlike Sandya Ekneligoda who did not have elite connection, Lal and Sonali have been bought off by the Jarapalanaya govt. who has not caught any of the murderers of journalists,

It is true that the murder case of Journalist Lasantha should be come to an end. There is no doubt that it is a political murder and justice should be done. The murderers are still alive and still in politics and danger of coming back to power. Are we a nation in favour of unlawful murders? If any one things that murder of Lasantha is right, then we should know what are the crimes committed by Lasantha?

      Ajith,

Lasantha was engaged in treachery. I remember once he published full names of the army officers who had connections with Karuna faction back in 2006. This news article was used by the LTTE in a peace talk conference to show that Sri Lankan government has no faith in peace talks with LTTE. If Lasantha was an responsible journalist he should have understood his limits.

Does that mean Morons who support/celebrate Dr Rajapaksa LLD do not have anything to fear the clan. Does it also mean about 50% of the population would be deemed dead on the first day of clan’s coronation? In your case though you are a card carrying Moron you have nothing to fear simply because you don’t know the reason as to why you should be critical of Dr Mahinda LLD or for that any other leader.

        Shenal,
Who is Karuna? LTTE deputy leader who is responsible for number of murders and number of attacks in the East & South including Central Bank and Dalada Maligawa and he was considered as a terrorist by Sri Lanka. Are you saying army officers having unofficial link with a terrorist who was fighting against Srilankan army is justifiable? Do you know why they had contacts? Are they making deal for Mahinda? Was it a crime to publishing the names of army offficers who had unoffical connection with terrorist? He is a journalist and his job is to tell the truth. Anyway, you agree that Lasantha was murdered by the govt of that time!

        • 2
          0

          Ajith,

Even though Karuna was a former terrorist he had been out casted by the LTTE in 2005. Army has every authority to befriend enemies for the advantage of the war. It is highly justifiable. Also, if the politicians can accept the former terrorist political wing TNA as a legitimate political party instead of terrorist I don’t know how SLA cannot recognize and work with LTTE terrorist for the country’s benefit.

In 1958 group of Tamil vandals descredited the venerable Nagadeepa vihara and threw away a Buddha statue to the sea. The governor in chief of the time Sir Oliver told the media this story and asked them to do what is right. No one reported this incident. That is calling a responsible journalism. I believe now you can understand how Lasantha should have behaved in 2005.

It is highly suspected that some form of government agency carried out the hit. But, I could be wrong. It could well have been some other element trying to discredit the government.

Soon, law enforcement authorities must arrest GoTa, the uneducated grade 10 moron and the former Gas Station assistant in US for this killing Lasantha and thousands of Sinhala and Tamil civilians during Ealam War. Don’t forget, GoTa abandoned the battlefield at the height of Ealam war and became a Refugee in US and then came back when MaRa became president. Thanks to S. Fonseka’s strategic leadership, we won the war against LTTE. GoTa goes to history for stealing the credit of finishing the Ealam war from S. Fonseka using the powers of his brother MaRa. Then he became enormously rich through mega commissions from MIG deals, Arms deals, and floating armoury. Down with Viyath Manga and Light and perpetrators like Dayan J Silva, GoTa’s stooges.

At that time he considered himself a true Buddhist. He wanted to serve humanity and thought he could better serve pumping gas than being in the battle field.

      Mudson,

How everybody know who killed Lasantha? Are you saying that Ranil lied outright? The first thing to do is to take a statement from Ranil on why did he accuse former army commander fonseka for Lasantha’s murder.

      • 7
        3

Why do you need to speak to Ranil? Speak to Rajapaksa govt inside man and true Buddhist Dr. Mervyn Silva. He was with the govt and has the inside information.

“Former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse ordered the hit on Lasantha Wickrematunga in January 2009, ex-public relations minister Mervyn Silva alleged in a formal complaint lodged with police Saturday, the spokesman said.”

      • 2
        2

        Shenal

“How everybody know who killed Lasantha?”

Though he would not have pulled the trigger in this case most people know who ordered the killing as circumstantial evidence points to him. That is one reason as to why he should be taken into police custody and vigorously investigated if necessary under PTI, excluding the usual sadistic treatment of the accused, which means lock him away for few years without being charged as he had done in his 10 year stint as the Chief National Hangman of the country.

And let us come back to war crimes. Don’t you think he is unconformable with truth seeking. His contribution to the country is attributed to his heroic/legendary part in committing large scale war crime and crime against humanity.

” Are you saying that Ranil lied outright? The first thing to do is to take a statement from Ranil on why did he accuse former army commander fonseka for Lasantha’s murder.”

Do you know what this patriotic Chief National Hangman told Stephen Sackurin in an interview to BBC regarding the lonely Field Marshall? We will hang him, we will hang him.
He had already gone mad when he was offered the job of Chief National Hangman by his brother and should have been admitted to a correctional facility in the USA.

        • 1
          2

          Native Veddha,

Mere accusation is not enough to categorically prove that Gota or Mara did it. Moreover, the most important issue is that Ranil W accusing Fonseka for carrying out the hit. However, I don’t think it is this difficult to find out who ordered the hit unless of course he’s currently supporting the present government.

  • 17
    3

Lal, I could not empathise and agree with you more on your claim, THE MURDERER COULD BECOME THE PRESIDENT OR PM of our blessed Serendipity.

I generally do not like to curse anyone, but I wish the calamity and shame which befell MARA shall befall RANIL & MY3 who have betrayed you, the parents of Wasim Thajudeen and numerous other journalists and innocent people who were murdered under the MARA Regime, aided and abetted by his Brother GOTA or may have even been instrumental on all the murders, without any trace of proof.

How on earth can anyone ever think of bringing those dark ages back again to Sri Lanka. What’s really wrong with our people, isn’t there are anyone else who can take care of our beautiful island from these murderers and traitors, including the present lot.

Are we only doomed to fail as a Nation or is JVP the only solution.

It is very very scary if the murderers of Lasantha becomes a president or a prime minister. Srilankan people are foolish to vote for white van murderers , there is no purpose in driving home the reality as many have been brainwashed by the Rajapakse and all his clan of fraudsters , murderers , and his group of men in yellow robes. What is your projected rise in your net assets after the completion of your proposed riot?

    It was defineatly NOT
    Sarath Fonseka .
It was none other than Colonel Nandasena Gota Rajapakse who is also the mastermind of the white van culture. Lasantha was about to expose Colonel Gotabaya’s dubious MIG deals. So he was murdered. The murderer must be arrested .

    • 6
      2

So, why Ranil is silent. HE could have exposed at the the mig deal to public.

    • 7
      6

Who murdered Kadirgama? I don’t think it was LTTE. If it was LTTE they would not have been able to escape the security in that area.

        1

        Burt

You may well be right. From what we gather, no way the LTTE had a hand in it. CBK knows the whole story. Her intention to make LK the PM was a sound one and could have taken the country towards unity. But the Sinhala extreme and activists in the armed forces had their way. The result – the humble Coconut today at Rs.100; cheap rice at Rs.125 ; a cup of tea at Rs.50 and the US$ at Rs.155. It is the best of times for a few and the worst of times for 20 million Sinhalese, Tamils and others. Do our bu..g..rs eat punnakku?

WE ALL SRI LANKANS WILL NEVER ALLOW THAT MURDERER Gotabaya Rajapakse to ever hold office again. We want him out of our beloved country immediately.
    He is a disgrace.

  • 3

    Prasan

    “WE ALL SRI LANKANS WILL”

Please define what Sri Lankan means to you and others.

    “He is a disgrace.”

So are the rest of the people.
The state/government continue to allow unfettered impunity to those who have been committing crimes, war crimes, …………………….. both have been guilty of criminal activity and the people have turned a blind eye and permitted the state/government go unchallenged for the past 70 years.

Well the voters and crooks deserve each other.

Where did the crooks find the name Sri Lanka? When the island’s name was changed in 1972 the people were never consulted nor were they allowed to vote for it in an island wide referendum. A handful of crooks decided to change name followed by rest of crooks in the parliament voting for it out of fear for chairman Siri Mao and her handbag.

By the way Sri and Lanka are foreign.

All these killings happened before 2010 right? How can you attribute these murders to Mahinda? Was he the only gunslinger at that time? Wasn’t there any Prabhakaran around?

        Shenali

Dr Mahinda Rajapaksa (LLD) was elected as president in 2005. His brother Dr Gota Rjapaksa DSc was the official national hangman from November 2005 to January 2015. Being the the official hangman at the time he enjoyed impunity through out his adult life. By the way VP helped his brother Dr Mahinda Rajapaksa (LLD) to win two elections and a war and VP heavily supported Premadasa win the war with IPKF.

“Unless Lasantha Murder Case Is Solved Accused Could End Up As PM Or President: Lal Wickrematunge”
    .
The accusation is very clear here but me thinks there is a horse-trading going on. The card played is “Cannot open the wardrobe without letting some skeletons falling out”.
The one who holds the reins of power has an advantage in this home vs home game.
The language/religion-divide was used to practice penalty shoot out.

Lasantha was a muckraking journalist, to say the least. He was not respected in the country but his dead body was used by the UNP to come to power. What happened to Tajudeen? Same thing. UNP has a lot of skeletons in its own closet Respected journalist Richard de Soyza was killed by UNP goons and what happened to the case?
Recently in Parliament, a JO member said to PM: “if you want to see Lasantha’s killer, turn around and look behind. He did and the entire House started laughing. Whom did he see grinning at him? Just guess who sits behind PM’s seat in Parliament.
Today Lasantha’s murder case has become a joke just like that of Tajudeen. After Feb 10, we will be able to see what the general public think about this Yahapalana gang. If they are rejected the entire Yahapalan government including President Sirisena should resign and let the people decide. That will ease up the tension that people are undergoing today.

  • 6
    1

The statement is very true. There were/are so many journalists killed in their service to the people. Lasantha’s case however is fundamental. Whatever the progress that the present government has achieved in enhancing democracy, if they fail (they have already in many respects) to bring the culprits to justice in this case, all achievements might be reversed. A government has every responsibility to persuade (not intervene) the system of justice and prosecution when it is lethargic or nearly miscarries justice. Otherwise, what is a government for?

    • 0
      2

When did Lasantha die and when the murderers conferred with PhDs?

Otherwise, what is a government for?It is the same question Tamils are asking from 1948. If the Sinhala Jury Verdict is the one available for 1956 murders, 1958 murders, 1961 Murders, 1977, Murders, 1983 Murders and for 2009 Genocides, then for what the heck Tamils need this Appe Aanduwa?

Why only Lasantha Wickramatunga’s death is special. SO many died those days. Why they are not important ?

    • 0
      0

Of course if one carefully reads through the statement, the fundamental character of Wickrematunge’s killing (not merely death) is clear in the political arena. Of course all deaths are regrettable and all killings should be investigated. Having said that, Wickrematunga’s killing is symbolic and it would remain in the public consciousness for the years to come. He was an Editor of an important newspaper. As far as I knew, he ran that newspaper establishment with similar others. He was fearless and particularly exposing corruption. There were things that I didn’t agree with him in his approach or interpretation. However, he had every right to hold those views.

Why should the public agitate for this particular investigation? You cannot of course bring Lasantha back to life. But the prosecutions can bring some relief and sense of justice to the family, friends and other journalists. More importantly, such an investigation and prosecution can be a deterrent to such violations occurring at present and future. As the statement says ( I believe it), investigations are completed. What delays is prosecution. It is apparent that the identified perpetrators were higher ups in the military and/or the defence establishment. That cannot be a hesitation whatever the good that they have done in defending the country from terrorism. The war is over. The country needs democracy and justice. Most importantly, the country should not revert back to the dark ages of war and human rights violations. Things should be viewed in an evolutionary perspective.

Justice need be done not as a favour. Justice need be done to prevent a repetition.
Will investigating Sinhala High Profile Murders will bring justice to Wanni poor Tamils?
Whatever the arguments can put forward by Tamil as per this learned professor, Tamils are only Demelo Pariah and/or LTTE terrorist. It is possible in Lankawe only that this type of ultra-Sinhala racism preached and justified by country’s highest learned group. These people know excessive dress and drink wine in their social studies university parties but never wear a Amude to hide their shame when they walk on the road. That time’s best Statesman in the country Raviraj is nothing, Joseph Pararajasingham is nothing. All times’ Ceylon best Diplomat, Kathirgamar, who turned around the IC opinion to the wrong side to save the Sinhala Patriotism is nothing (Even after dedicatedly serving to Sinhala Hegemony) . Why? they all are Demelo Pariah! This is very low grade talk by this learned person, who keep continuously discounting and claiming that “we have won the war, leave us alone from your defeated cries, but we have to celebrate our victory with firecrackers and Kavvum. Whatever Tamils can say, they are only Pariahs; only great ones in the Island are the wildlife’s descendants, the Sinhala Buddhist.” His last comments revels that he is concerned that the Tamils are not capable of envisaging the highness he is trying to preach. This person is not ready to write one sentence, “all the death are equal, the influential Lasantha’s death is not investigated for 9 years, The unknowns Wanni people’s death will not ever be investigated. Let the ICC to step in”. Thanks to Buddha, he had brought almost an end to the communism which has been preaching this type of Sinhala Caste – Tamils Caste mirroring on Brahmin- Dalit systems.

The one honorary DSc which Dr Gota DSC received from University of Colombo was for the killing of huge number of innocent civilian.

Dr Gota DSc deserves one more honorary DSc for attempting to silence media freedom by sheer elimination process. That relates to incidents which took place prior to the end of war.

      Jimmy, the Nutty,

Sure there is a whole list of murders aided and and abetted by MARA/GORA, the MURDEROUS DUO.

      1. Lasantha
      2. Ekneheliyagoda
      3. Wasim Thajudeen
      4. FTZ Protesters
      5. Chilaw Protesters
      6. Aluthgama and Beruwela destruction and killings.
      7. Welikada Prisoners and various other White vanned Murders.

What is important Moron is that these two God Fathers who were in charge of the Citizens of Sri Lanka should be held responsible and kept in prison without allowing a re run of those dark events. That is what is IMPORTANT YOU MORON.

The comment made by Lal Wickramatunge clearly hints at someone and the current political scenario. Before Jan 8, 2015, it was a one man show and the position of PM was an ornament. Now it is not so. Lal’s comment reflects the current situation where the PM has a great say in affairs of Government. Does he refer to someone in opposition today? Can’t be, since if a guy over there to be with the power then there has to be after an election and most likely it will be a one man show under Jarapassa. Under those conditions, the 19th amendment gets into full swing and the position of President would be more ornamental. So reference to President becomes superfluous. Hence it is someone who wields power in his own right but not yet the President or PM. The answer therefore is clear. Incidentally if we look at the Five star officers of India, say Sam Manekshaw, KM Cariappa and Arjan Singh there is some substance, ethics and more over something to learn from them. Can we say the same thing here? If ever the guy opens his mouth it is an embarrassment to the team in which he is a partner.

Agree with Bert. A former PM who was behind the ASSASINATION of a FM became President. Murderers are the ideal people as president for this DHARMADEEPAYA because we do the exact opposite of what the Lord Buddha preached.

    Jim, that’s an IDIOTIC question.

We have to start somewhere. So, if somebody says start with Lasantha’s case – that’s fine by me.

Had somebody had said start with Thajudeen’s case, your response would have been identical, but for the substitution of the name.

We don’t want kangaroo courts. A proper trial needs preparation, takes time. However it needn’t have taken the three years that Yahapalana has taken so far.

I still support Yahapalanaya, but may even vote JVP.

The effect of what you are doing is to PROTECT all thugs and CRIMINALS.

STOP commenting until you have THOUGHT!

The problem is that we know whoever killed lasantha is living amongst us hiding like vipers ready to strike again but spending sleepless nights coiling and uncoiling in their beds paying for the dastardly crime committed thinking that according to Buddhism that they their children will have to pay for this crime for generations to come. We need to go before courts to punish them.

    To lasantha’s murderer.
Tell us, do you have a family..? .Children you love and adore?
Children who call you ” Daddy of a thousand kisses”….because it was all
You wanted from them…when you took time off just to be with them..enjoy them?
In case you have forgotten, may we remind you –
That you robbed lasantha’s family – his precious children who adored him, of
Their Daddy of a thousand kisses.?
