UNP’s Current ‘Brand’ Is Losing & Is Recovery Possible?

By Vishwamithra

“If you’re not branding yourself, you can be sure others do it for you.” ~ Unknown

The United National Party (UNP) had a problem with its branding since its earliest days. Being directly and closely identified with the Colombo-based elite usually clad in western suits, foreign-educated, uncomfortable with the vernacular and being confirmed as a political party always backing capitalist economic theories and practices, had been significant and essential elements of the then UNP. These facts are beyond refutation. Furthermore, its leadership from DS Senanayake up to JR Jayewardene belonged to this exclusive ‘club’. I have written extensively on this subject, especially on the UNP’s perennial problem of being a ‘slave’ of the Western powers. However, this is more a perception than a fact.

This is where ‘branding’ comes into play. The brand of any product is not what the owner of the product wants it to be; it is what the customer/consumer perceives it to be. This fundamental marketing principle seems to have evaded all the UNP leaders right up to JR Jayewardene’s time. Although JR himself had been a woeful victim of this perception problem as far as his own brand was concerned, he managed to put it to a rest when he took over the reins of the Party. Of all the UNP’s leaders in the fifties, sixties and seventies, JR was portrayed and defined by his political enemies as well as friends as one who was a lackey of the West, who had no empathy for the average man, whose policies and principles were diametrically opposed to those pursued by politicians whose reading of the pulse of the common man was much sharper and more accurate. Nevertheless, before embarking on the making and unmaking of J R’s brand, I hasten to delve into the unmaking of the UNP’s brand in general.

SWRD Bandaranaike began his political career with the Sinhala Maha Sabha. The Sinhala Maha Sabha was a political party in Ceylon founded by Bandaranaike in 1934-35, substantially in order to promote Sinhalese culture and community interests. Nationalistic in its fundamental outlook and approach to resolving issues of the day, the Sinhala Maha Sabha attracted many a member of the locally educated elites of the time. Having realized that he could not achieve his personal ambition of becoming the Prime Minister through the UNP, SWRD left it in 1951 and formed Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

If there was one politician who understood the underpinnings of political branding at that time was Bandaranaike. He not only knew the UNP’s branding deficiencies, he also understood what the need of the majority was at the time. He also knew that the majority Sinhalese Buddhists in Ceylon in the immediate aftermath of Independence was a largely neglected segment of the population and any emotional appeal to that vast majority, if marketed aggressively well, would be a winning formula. In other words, he created an exclusive brand for his party. From the leader downwards- that is Bandaranaike himself- to the ordinary electorate organizer, every activist and those Buddhist Monks who supported the Bandaranaike cause took that brand new ‘Brand’ across the country. Sanga, Veda, Guru, Govi, Kamkaru became that brand. And that was indeed quite a powerful and unreservedly emotional appeal.

In order to ‘right the untold wrongs visited upon the overwhelming majority’, Bandaranaike most lucidly articulated, ‘the country’s political dynamic needs a right about turn’. By ousting the UNP from power, the majority of the Ceylonese population that consisted of Sinhalese Buddhists who lived in the rural villages could assume a supreme status that they so richly deserved; English-educated and English-speaking Colombo based pukka sahibs need to go; commanding heights of the economy must be with the people and in order to achieve that noble goal, all profit-making private business ventures must be nationalized. Caught on the crossroads of the ‘cold war’ between the Western powers led by the United States of America and the Soviet Union-led Eastern European bloc, an appeal to nationalization of the country’s commanding heights of the economy had increasing charm. Whether Ceylon at the time possessed the administrative and financial wherewithal to run these nationalized institutions was a different matter altogether. Yet the brand that Bandaranaike created endured and it is still relevant today.

This was the genesis of the ‘common man’s Party’. Bandaranaike and his SLFP’s not only went to great lengths to spread this new narrative as a Party and the sole representative of the Sinhalese Buddhists; they also took care of the adverse narrative in respect of their main political rival UNP’s brand. Backed by the Leftwing political parties at the time, Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) led by Dr N M Perera, Communist Party (CP) led by Dr S A Wickramasinghe and Viplavakari Sama Samaja Party (VLSSP), later Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) led by Phillip Gunawardana, the campaign to malign the image of the UNP, the Bandaranaike stalwarts went to work. They were successful up until 1977.

1977 was a different year. A watershed in Sri Lanka’s politics, the unprecedented victory in 1977 for the UNP was no accident. The subjective appeal that the Bandaranaike-led coalition of the center-left failed to change the objective conditions in the country; the common man’s misery continued and worsened by the year; the sugar-coated slogans lost their meaning and the common man’s party became an uncommon political entity governed by one single family deeply entrenched in the vested interests of a bygone era of feudalism. SWRD’s widow, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, by sheer strength of her personality, transformed that common man’s party into a party of intense corruption whose sole purpose was to enrich her family both politically and otherwise. Aided and abetted by another Bandaranaike, namely Felix Dias, Sirimavo and her SLFP presided over the affairs of the common man’s party. They crushed the foundations laid down by its founders.

JR Jayewardene was one politician who understood these contradictions within the SLFP and its phony brand of the common man’s party. After taking over the helm of the UNP 1973, J R transformed his party not overnight, but over a period of 3 to 4 years; he changed the objective conditions that surrounded his party; he transformed the party of the rich into a party of the educated rural youth who appealed to the Sinhalese Buddhist majority in the country. And he facilitated the rise of Ranasinghe Premadasa, a déclassé representative, a real common man to the helm of the Party. It is not an exaggeration to surmise that Ranasinghe Premadasa would never have become the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the phony ‘common man’s Party’.

In addition to Premadasa, leaders of the stature of Gamini Dissanayake, Lalith Athulathmudali, Nissanka Wijeratne, all educated and well-informed men of the day, rendered their time, energy and knowhow to the party’s transformation from that of an uncommon man’s party into one that deeply cared about the common man. It is this UNP that Ranil Wickremesinghe, the current supremo, took over the leadership of. The UNP has not recovered from the serious setback it has suffered ever since the departure of Premadasa, Gamini and Lalith. Once again the top leadership of the UNP has become an exclusive club. It consists of some Colombo-based pseudo-intellectuals whose socio-political goals are far too divorced from those of the majority in the country. Yet the second tier of the UNP looks promising, Karu Jayasuriya, Sajith Premadasa and Navin Dissanayake. But unfortunately, the country does not see the UNP as the Party of them; it is still portrayed as the Party of Ranil Wickremesinghe and his ‘exclusive club’.

What needs to happen in order to change this adverse brand-effect of the UNP? One doesn’t have to look elsewhere. The talent, energy and motivation are all richly present within the UNP itself. When the Presidential Elections were called by Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2015, there was one person in the UNP who could have delivered the same or even better result that Maithripala Sirisena was successful in delivering and that was Karu Jayasuriya. Why on earth Ranil refrained from consenting to Karu Jayasuriya’s nomination is a mystery.

A strong sense of security is a quality of a consummate leader. Ranasinghe Premadasa did not have that sense. That is why he resorted to the ugly means of preventing Gamini Dissanayake and Lalith Athulathmudali from gaining popularity among the masses. It was JR Jayewardene who was quintessentially secure in his position. When men and women of puny stature are invariably drawn inwards in order to secure themselves, strong ones look outwards to draw better talent to enrich the Party and enhance its image. That is precisely the fundamental difference between a leader like JR and Premadasa. Ranil Wickremesinghe has fallen into the Premadasa category.

If the United National Party is intent on being victorious in the forthcoming Presidential Elections, it has to change its brand. The people’s perception matters and it’s not only critical, it’s indispensible. Ranil Wickremasinghe has only one choice, he has no second option. And the one way in which he can change the brand of the Party he says he loves so much is by nominating a new face for the forthcoming Presidential Elections. And he has to announce it now. Each day he waits without doing it is costing his party dearly.

    Vishwamithra,

RE: UNP’s Current ‘Brand’ Is Losing & Is Recovery Possible?

UNP’s Current ‘Balls’ are Rotting & Is Recovery Possible?

Aren’t the UNP’s better off by letting the rotting balls drop , and replace them with new balls, not half-rotten balls?

Ranil will never nominate anyone else to the party leadership. He may say he loves the party but he loves himself more. Ranil’s one and only goal is to be the President of Sri Lanka. The only way he can achieve this is by hanging on to the leadership of the party. That said, anyone with a half a brain knows the people of this country will never vote him in. Ranil has no shame. If he had an iota of decency or self respect, he would have resigned long ago.

As for Ranil as the leader of the UNP – only death will do them apart unless the people vote him out of Parliament at the next general election. Perhaps, that may be the only chance at redemption for the UNP supporters.

Vishamitra is unabashedly recommending UNP to change cosmetics to deceive masses rather than improving on core values which he himself has articulated well. Inferior product can be boosted by allocating more funds for advertising, but that is temporary. So long as I remember installation of 1978 Constitution, the referendum, civil rights of Sirimao, Jaffna library, 83′ Black July, 89′ Bheeshanaya and Wickramasinghe – Prabhakaran pact I will never vote for UNP whatever the branding their advertising department comes up with. For the present, they are thriving on hate politics and 100% en bloc voting of minorities which is an extremely harmful strategy as far ethnic/religious relations are concerned.
I recommend they appoint Vishamitra as their brand ambassador.

” Inferior product can be boosted by allocating more funds for advertising, but that is temporary. “

True, we have had inferior products supplied to us in the last 70 years, the only difference is the packaging, we bought products which profess to make dirty clothes whiter than white, ranging from Citizenship Act, Pahcha Maha Balavegaya’s Sinhala only, …………………… Weeping widow’s socialism, Sirimao-Sastri agreement, Standardisation, Special Status for Buddhism in constitution, Self Sufficiency, ….. executive presidency, Dharmista rule, …… war against terrorism, ……….. improved patriotism, ………………… still fighting against colonial masters, ………………. imperialists, …………….. own people, …………… while gloating all your war criminals, bigots, racists, crooks, killers, criminals, …………………………

As a result you have kept the people in perpetual poverty, death, ………… You never missed an opportunity to drag the people and country down the drain.

“I will never vote for UNP whatever the branding their advertising department comes up with.”

Not for the reasons you mentioned above, “installation of 1978 Constitution, the referendum, civil rights of Sirimao, Jaffna library, 83′ Black July, 89′ Bheeshanaya and Wickramasinghe – “

Indeed you would have been delighted, about Jaffna library, 83′ Black, ……………… and the war and its horrible end, while not mentioning the 1971 and Sirimao’s anti democratic dangerous actions, may be a clever dick ploy on your part.

    ==================
Bandaranayake tried to change this situation. Demala politicians picked this and highlighted as discrimination against Demala people and started creating problems to the Government. The behavior of these narrow minded racists Demala politicians was disgusting.

By last 40 years of UNP-JRJ since 1977 had been rule and ruin entire nation by so-called “Open policies of that Neo-Liberalism” that political-economic-social had shifted uncharted path to ours nations.
The nation become economic uncertainties that vast rule poor turn into poverty ridden and New urban poor has emerge by UNP-JRJ policies .
Four decades that rule by UNP governances(even with out UNP during CBK rule 1994 to 2005) has destroy entire sustsnsbility nation economy.
While since UNP that created different “brand of colonial pattern” in that ‘new’ mode of development that almost services-oriented been shifted from Agriculture and Industries under “colonial” development.
The rural poor and poverty has rise rapidly it was good sources of that root cause of that Rural Terrorism by JVP in country side and LTTE in north.
By adding and abating 1977 to 1994 of that UNP local lumpen classes and vital interest western masters has an introduce democratic vandalism in through out Island wide. Needleless to say 1977 policies of Neo-Liberalism was root cause of War and Terrorism in several modes. Indeed LTTE of Tamil ruthless launch war politics 30 years until 2009 May that defeated by MR and progressive alliances. The JVP political terrorism was root out by UNP regime 1988/89/90 by P.Premapala.
The politics of UNP Brand is /was identified as political of Terrorism and War on politics.
Well being of UNP has been laid foundation for partition of Island by JRJ-Rajive Gandi accord 1987 July .
Therefor UNP political “Brand” is nothing else, it was partition of Island for Tamil Eealm projected originated by UNP leadership.
The current UNP leadership carry forward as one and only success is Ranil Wickmsinge of UNP leader divided Island by joint hand with TNA and JVP.

I always thought Dr Ranil is the modern day Dom juan Dharmapala..
But After reading the threats of Dr Ranil’s mate, Damila Amila made towards the Mahasanga of Malwatta where Dr Ranil’s observes Pancha Sila.. Dr Ranil now looks like Princess Catherina and Damila Amila the new Dom Juan Dharmapala..

Thanks to Banadaranayaka the last 50 years have restored the rightful place of the Sinhala Buddhist majority in their 2500 year old Land.
After trying for 30 years Dr Ranil finally got the chance to dismantle that position of the Sinhala Buddhist majority , with the help of the British American and Canadian Govts and their NGO brigades .

Dr Ranil was arrogantly enforcing his agenda to divide the nation in to separate states, and privatize all Govt services including Education and Health.
And finally change the Constitution to eliminate the Executive Presidency which ensures the unity and rights of the great majority.

With the current President finally waking up from his slumber, things are beginning to look a bit more difficult for Dr Ranil to fulfill his agenda.
With Billions of Dollars at his disposal to buy Votes in Kotte, Dr Ranil is still a formidable PM .
He will try every which way to get the Two Thirds and finish off the Presidency before the begining of 2020.

Therefore I don’t think Dr Ranil is in any hurry to rebrand his UNP or allow any of those to even come near him, let alone topple him..
And the Western Governments and the TNA will endure it..

UNP is messing up their cards by wrong appointments. Ranil may be a good administrator but a bad winner
for his party ,he should step down and let those who have the winning streaks of winning an election take over. If the UNP does not take this opportunity they are gone for good.

I wonder why the Tamil amd Sinhala uprisings (dissention of the Masses) came up soon after the advent the JR regime.
    *
Sirimavo’s time and country’s dedication was towards rural development. With the ushering of the JR regime, came the dismantling of the rural socialistic enterprise ; rural youth forced-educated against the rural lifestyle. Soon all uprisings began.
    *
By Premadasa”s time , desperate masses had started menial labour jobs in the Middle East. From that capital, houses were able to be built for the homeless – for those displaced during colonialism , and for rural enterprise devastated under the forced UNP capitalistic objective.
    *
As it is obvious the masses would have never voted for capitalism, the reason for the JR capitalistic victory is evident : The only people who were disgruntled by the Sirimavo way were the former colonial lifestyled townspeople. The UNP ensured the manipulation of votes to benefit them, and it was very easily done in 1973.

So you have completely forgotten or unaware of the 1971 Sinhala uprising.

“The UNP ensured the manipulation of votes to benefit them, and it was very easily done in 1973.”

Tell us what exactly happened in 1973, and how exactly did they manipulate the votes?

NV………those were the ancestors of the present JVP….the idiots who want to busy-bee Lankan masses in right Stalin communist-style, into producing industrial things for other places. They scorned things like agriculture and traditional occupation. They were the ones displaced off their traditional lands and had no farms for self-sufficiency. Sirima was almost into helping them, but was taken over by the UNP.
        *
After these guys had been tortured and suppressed by the UNP, they went to the ME….but the money they brought in was never enough. More insurrections took place, and then civil war.
        *
Guess they would have all gone to the Middle East also, under Sirima. Once the foreign money came it, everything would have been perfected in Sirimavo’s socialized community. A more refined capitalism would have emerged.
        *
Nowadays it is computer gilmarts and gerrymandering that has been manipulated our elections……back then, it was human gilmarts and gerrymandering. Very easy to do in an unsuspecting polity.

        1

Electoral fraud! The Masses were FOR Sirima. The JVP dissidents were less than 20,000 ( 10,000 insurgents + their families….ok 20,000-50,000….prosperous towns-people at that time were less than 2 million). Very easy for the rich bugs to push and bully their way through the election process.

There were several lies that planted in srilanka
1.Unp is a capitalist party , during 1977- 1994 the size of srilankan economy was only less than 15 billion USD ,the per capital was only 800 USD this is less than Ethiopian size of economy.my problem is a party and a people like Jr ,premadasa ,gamini ,lalith or ranil who are unable to uplift the countries economy at least up to 15 billion USD can be considered as a capitalist party if yes unp is shame for capitalism. Unp and slfp has done good things for agriculture. Agreed. Before 2005 slfp and unp has done the same failed mixed economic system. The first time in srilankan history the top level capitalist party has formed after 2005 by slfp. This slfpers are master brains ,great economic managers and architects if this huge 80 billion business economy in srilanka. The slfp master brains took only 20 billion USD economy and 1000 USD per capital but slfp top level capitalist has converted this economy in to 80 billion USD and percapital in to 3850 USD in just ten years. That is Why the entire high ranking business class and upper middle class and middle class are die heart supporters of slfp. Before 2005 there were no any business class no , pettah welanthos are main business class if unp. Can higher business class support economic failures like unp does not know any thing about capitalist economomy. Slfp of course Hitlers and super powers and unp normally considered as pathola governments even medias are nor caring unp no. But unp is a very innocent party and done lot of things for agriculture . but do not ask unp to do a huge business economies which was architected by slfp master brains. If still any one argue that unp know 1% capitalism even please show unps economic performace record.

      executive from co operate,
      *
Agreed 100%. Except that Slfp is not really capitalistic. They are very socialistic actually, and got the big bump in monetary capital from Chinese loans and grants.
      *
Current UNP is now living off these same loans and trying to incorporate the same “innocent” technique, to force people to work at small-time busy-bee enterprise to hopefully keep rolling the money. Actually, their capitalism goes hand-in-hand with Lenin Communism and they will force people to work or else. Their system is so innocent, that they cannot make profit to payback China other than to sell our lands to India, USA and also China – air-force and naval bases for USA (like Deigo Gracia) and impending land bridge to India +cut up the country into 5 disunited provinces+ become India’s 50th state . Any success in agriculture is due to Monsanto and GMO on our ancient crops.

Slfp will spread the money socially, and let people do the most natural things they can do, like traditional agriculture and fishing. They’d sell only a bit of land to China. Payment plan will be far simpler and easier. With higher Happiness Index, country will prosper rapidly.

The current ‘UNP Brand’ has almost no resemblance to the ‘Vintage UNP. The ‘Vintage SLFP’ started ‘Ape Anduwa’ but now has embraced the worst aspects of capitalism.
Up till recently, we had to chose between the two bads but SLPP, the son of SLFP, is on offer.
The present versions of UNP, SLFP and SLPP smell corruption/nepotism/impunity-curry.
    .
Under the infamously short tenure as PM, the SLPP backed MR has shown that he has not changed at all.
SLFP is a lame duck trying hard to swim into the SLPP tent.
The grit and tenacity of RW is of the Corbyn/May type.
    .
So Vishwamitra, we must give RW the chance to “Do or……”.

Economic management failures can say as administrators . if Ranil is a administrator what the word we can use slfp master brains who has architected a huge business economy of 80 billion and percapital of 3850 USD what they got 20 billion economy and 1000 USD percapital in 2005. Unp people are very innocent very good do not say the unpers Jr ,premadasa , gamini, lalith or Ranil as administration. It is the shame for the word of administration. If unp leaders even one has atleast 0.001% administration skills that slfp master brains has please show the economic performans card of unp as slfp proudly showing. Unp Is very good for agriculture but do not ask them to do a capitalist business economy of slfpers. Unp is utterly week in economic subject ahha do not say any any unper as administrator it is a shame for the word of administration

UNP brand is different phenomena of democracy that current leadership of UNP of RW and her alliance are mostly follow by anti-establishment line of politics by JVP and TNA.
We have to understand that UNP “Brand of Democracy” back by “minority” is also “democracy”.!@ Meanwhile according to RW and CBK is seems to be lining with these two political leaders are rejected is that majority as a “Democracy”.

This not an error of counting by “majority ” but inside the Parliament, but that two leaders of RW and CBK it did no recognized popular majority by voters of democracy .The current brand of UNP share by and CBK,TNA and JVP leadership.
UNP that upside down democracy by ‘branding’ of new version on system of governess.. According to that which that right to vote also denied by UNP, as well as by SC of Judiciary by their rule of court. In spite of all that Democracy in crisis, why is that RIGHT VOTE for fresh mandates that expire , when UNP did not delivered nothing FOUR YEARS what shall tax payers has to do?

Is ‘branding’ alone adequate to change public perceptions? How about the adoption and implementation of actual policies? Doing more for the greater good and not for a selected group of people? How about supporting national enterprises? Developing local youth? Strking a balance between ‘local vs foreign’ investment?

What is this “current UNP brand?” Recent history has shown us that
Ranil Wickramasingha and his gay cronies running the show no
matter what others said or did. Is this current brand or stale bread?
He has done it again by bringing in the same suspects to the cabinet.
If a new brand is to emerge, there should be someone other than Ranil
should come as leader. But that will not happen until a thing called
money exists. Ranil, the devious, cunning manipulator he is, will carry
    on.
