Violent mobs have marched through parts of the Kurunegala District for nearly 24 hours attacking mosques, homes and businesses in Muslim settlements in the area with most of the violence taking place while police curfew is in effect, raising fears of another anti-Muslim riot in the area along the lines of Aluthgama in 2014 or Digana in 2018.
Mobs laid siege to the Kuliyapitiya, Hettipola, Aukana, Kottampitiya areas and by evening today May 13 had moved to Nikaweratiya town area driving Muslim families, now in the midst of their Ramadan fast into paddy fields and into hiding Muslim leaders said.
Footage has emerged of mobs moving through towns while curfew is in place in full view of the police. Mobs burnt vehicles meters away from the Hettipola police station earlier in the day.
Activists also reported that mobs had been stopping vehicles and beating passengers. At least three mosques were attacked in Kiniyama a Muslim village in Kuliyapitiya.
Residents are fearful the mobs will return as darkness falls again to attack homes.
Police arrested several suspects in connection with the violence overnight but released them within hours after the mobs threatened to attack more and more villages unless the suspects were released.
President Maithripala Sirisena who is the Minister of Defence and Law and Order left for China to attend another conference. Apart from calling for calm on Twitter Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has made no moves to control the violence or call in the armed forces to maintain the peace.
After several incidents of violence were reported from Minuwangoda Police declared a curfew that covers the Gampaha District as well until 6AM tomorrow (14). The entire North Western Province is under curfew until further notice as the unrest continues.

As I said in my other comment, getting government compensation for these attacks may be in the cards.
After Digana riots orchestrated by the government itself, Muslims were paid millions of millions as compensation within a few weeks. Sinhalese victims of Shalawa blast and natural disasters had to wait for months to get compensation.
Therefore, government compensation for communal riots planned by interested parties should be stopped forthwith.
There is no way the government waste public money for willful damages.
Honestly, as far as I know Sinhalese Buddhists are not bothered about these incidents at all, as it is everybody’s knowledge that the UNP government and Muslim Ministers are behind them.
If the murderous government think that they can make these incidents as an excuse to postpone the Presidential Election, they are very much mistaken.
We have been very patient since January 2015. The volcano will erupt in December. Get ready!

On the other hand, I don’t find the three-week time lag between ISIS terror attacks and counter-attacks sparked by the events of April 21st to be surprising. It takes time for reports and implications to sink in.

That the President and the Prime Minister have proved themselves incapable of handling the current situation is beyond question. I wouldn’t myself conclude that they had planned it all, but what they seem to be doing now appears unsatisfactory. In the short term, the declaration of curfew and entrusting the maintenance of law and order to armed employees of the State is necessary. But they seem not to have any desire to make way for others in the Medium Term. One step that would re-assure me would be putting General Sarath Fonseka in charge.
