Video Of Violent Misogynist Attack: Activists Condemn

A video that warrants the strongest possible content warning, featuring an act of extreme violence inflicted upon a popular actress, has been released on social media [Colombo Telegraph refrains from providing the link to the video, in an effort to reduce clicks and further publicity to it]. The actress, Piyumi Hansamali, is a popular public figure with a very strong social media presence. The video shows a [cis] man assaulting the actress, violently trampling her neck and chocking her. It shows Hansamali being chocked and in a situation of extreme distress. “This video is an expression of extreme violence, and content of this nature should not be allowed on public social media without prior moderation”, commented Uvindu Kurukulasuriya, founder and Editor-in-Chief of Colombo Telegraph.

“This kind of video violates the minimum ethics of a decent and civilised society”, commented Thiyagaraja Waradas, Senior Lecturer at the University of Colombo, currently doctoral scholar at the University of Bath.

Waradas further added “an immediate inquiry should be carried out by the Women’s Affairs Minister, and the state should take every action to ensure that every single individual involved in this shameless act, as well as its filming, projection, and social media dissemination, should be brought in front of the law, so that the victimised party can have access to due support and justice”.

Expressing outrage at this incident and the video, Senel Wanniarachchi, a gender justice activist, author and scholar at London School of Economics, commented: “Where is our collective outrage on the said video? The fact that the man in question knew he can not only act in the way he did, but also have evidence of his action posted on social media, speaks volumes about the culture of impunity surrounding violence against women and girls in Sri Lanka and the fact that Facebook allowed the said video to be posted and reproduced online shows how this level of impunity that exists offline is mirrored in the online spaces as well”.

Gender justice activist, scholar and author Dr Chamindra Weerawardhana categorically condemned the violent video, noting that: “There is a thesis propagated by some that this entire video could be a clickbait publicity stunt. This view, whether it is substantiated or not, is beside the point. The whole point here is that there is a public video, where a cisgender woman is being violently assaulted, with a man’s foot on her neck. This kind of misogynist violence should have absolutely no place whatsoever in our society. The biggest problem here is also that the men who did this assume that their behaviour is permissible. This tells us that there’s something deeply rotten about masculinities in Sri Lankan society. This kind of video is an incitement to misogynist violence”.

“Social media platforms really need to up their game in terms of content moderation. That this kind of video, just like last month’s Christchurch massacre video, made it to public social media tells us that there’s something deeply problematic about social media usage, home and abroad”, Dr Weerawardhana further added. (By Shamila Rathnayake)

Looks like CT has hired someone new to check the comment compliance and the new broom sweeps well, or applied new enforcements due to any reason, CT?

I saw the video,This bugger could have killed the woman with his choking her with his foot.If the police don’t arrest him and he is not sent to at least 2 years to prison, then no point in having a police force. It is disgusting to treat someone like that and also film and circulate it.Law of jungle here.

‘This tells us that there’s something deeply rotten about masculinities in Sri Lankan society.’

No we have seen the next phase of our egregious Sri Lankan male behaviour.

Will anything be done about it at the highest levels?

    Don’t hold your breath folks.

ps: some of the worst proponents of this type of violence are the upstanding men who keep law and order in our sunny isle.

Is there no end to these kinds of atrocities in Sri Lanka.
It might sound trite, but this calls for immediate intervention and action by the government.

      Emil van der Poorten,
      “Immediate intervention”?
By whom? That IGP Joker? A criminal himself who was caught on video assaulting a subordinate. Nothing happened to him. He continues to be the IGP. Imagine how many such far worse assaults the IGP and other Police BigWigs must have conducted during their illustrious careers with corrupt, violent Sri Lanka Police. But, were never documented with video evidence. Sri Lanka’s boisterous “Fake Moral Brigade”, which includes Mahawansa fanatics, Christian fundamentalists and primitive Islamic lunatics will justify the violent abuse of this victim. After all, in their eyes, she has compromised our 2500 years old, impeccable “moral values” based culture. I recall defeated Mahinda Raja’s infamous solution to Sri Lanka’s countless rape victims. I am not kidding, he proposed rapists should take responsibility and marry their victims. That is Sri Lankan society’s attitude towards violence against women in a nutshell. We are truly primitive.
      Cheers!
PS: The attacker in the video is a SHAMELESS COWARD. Not to mention a criminal. Had this happened to any of my family members, that criminal coward would find my boot on his vital parts, where it really hurts immediately afterward. Justice can only be meted out that way in this lawless Banana Republic.

OMG. Call the UN peace keeping forces immediately.

These things happen everywhere in the world. From SL’s Lansi Mudukkuwa to the EU to North America.

What happened to the thousands of immigrant children in the US apprehended by the DHS and herded onto camps?

What happens in Canada? Google some stories from case workers from the Children’s Aid society of Canada to hear the horror stories.

Those are happening to helpless children with no defense. At least this happened to an adult who could have taken precautionary steps.

Not condoning the ass hole’s actions one bit.

Bollocks! The Re-tired Lt Perera is clearly a paid up member of the ‘it happens elsewhere so it is OK in our Democratic Sinhalese Buddhist Republic with its 2500-year-old civilisation. Twice-Bollocks! It should not happen anywhere. To anyone.
Practice that was OK for Lt’s and men of the Sri Lankan Army will never be acceptable behaviour in normal life.

It is quite outrageous to harm a woman in this manner. The attacker needs legal punishment for this behavior and should become precedent is future situations. The witnesses too should be reprimanded. Women’s Affairs sleeping?

          Sach,

This is the Sinhala Buddhist Rapist army culture man. The rapist Navy raped and killed Vydya. Then accused some Tamils were taking a rape video.
You guys have become the monkey, which killed the weaver bird for advising to build a nest like her to stay out of rain. No Salvation. Only Hanuman with the fire on the Tail can help you.

          Hey Sach,
We invited you to shoot a “Music Video”. Where we get to beat the living crap out of you. You deserve it. However, even before we started you started screaming, kicking, insulting and whining. Like a teeny, weeny, dot-bikini little girl.

Exact style of the Jackboot rapist army’s style! Training is working well.

There is a woman as local HRC commissioner. She did not bring out anything on the prisoners abuse video investigation. There is woman as justice minister. She is not ready to take care of the Muslim women’s mass problem. Arabian money is on the path. Then, do you expect from her to she do anything to this?

Sinhala mass is now desensitized and immune to these videos after all sort of Rapist army videos were released from Humanitarian Rescue Mission Operation of 2009.
Lankawe cannot be rolled back to Ceylon again. We need a new country, new culture, new laws.

It is sad to see such things happening for what ever the reason is. In a way it is good it was brought in to the public arena.

We have to hope the authorities will act soon.

This is click bait and a fake everyone knows who is Piumi.. just calm down.. If this is true it will be all over the news that this woman going to police to arrest the gan. So, use your brain. This is just to put whole Sri Lankans image under the bus. Poor thing is SL law and authorities not taking action against people who tries to put Sri Lankan dignity in such bad position.

There are ill people who do things like this. If not it’s easy to solve this by SL law and Justice.
