Violence Again At Neeraviyadi Pillaiyar In Mullaitivu

By N. Lohathayalan

Neeraavi Pillaiyar Temple at Chemmalai in Mulaitivu District is a site of controversy as Sinhalese in the area try to take-over a Saivite temple. A Buddhist priest, a Kolampe Methalangathara Thera, who for long tried to make it a Buddhist Temple, had died two days ago of cancer. This priest who put the temple in a controversial position going to court where the case still on going, had lived on temple premises demanding rights over the temple. As a result of his followers now wanting to conduct his last rites on temple premises on 22 Sept., the people of the area have expressed great dissatisfaction and trepidation of the violence that may arise.

File photo

Another Buddhist monk is engaged with the assistance of the police in directing the rites on the grounds where he had lived. The temple is about 10 ft by 10ft in size. The rites are to take place a few feet away. The police have informed the Provincial and District Secretaries of these plans. The District Secretary confirmed that the last rites would take place as described here.

Army and navy personnel have been brought into the area in large numbers. Several folk from the South too have been brought into the area on invitation in many buses.

It is pointed out by many Saiva Hindus that they are deeply hurt and wounded by this callous and heartless majoritrianism. Indeed Buddhists and Christians of sound mind too are hurt said a Christian.

Residents fear violence. The temple management have told the police in writing not to allow this because a funeral on temple premises is a violation of Hindu law, both polluting and sacrilegious. The locals plan to protest if the Buddhists go ahead.

It is noted that the Election Commission has warned the Commission staff to be vigilant about attempts to disturb communal harmony along the coast from Mullaitivu to Amparai because such violence can easily spill-over into the presidential elections.

Everytime there is violence in SL, I see a Buddhist monk/s in the picture.

Is it me who is seeing this?

All monks should be confined to their temples, and keys thrown away. They have become a dangerous breed.

I am a Christian by religion. Your generalization is bit unfair. I did not see Buddhist monks when the Easter attacks took place. Similarly when, LTTE chased out Muslims from Jaffna or killed Muslim worshipers in Kanthankudy mosque there were no Buddhist monks involved.

If all religions and their leaders mind their own business and look after the spiritual well being of their followers instead of going behind worldly things, Sri Lanka would be a better place. And we who belong to various religions, before pointing fingers at other religions better get our own houses cleaned up. That would result in a better and a truly peaceful country.

You are intellectually dishonest. Stick to the topic rather than digress to avoid the profound disrespect just shown in Mullaitivu. And seriously, there was no need to flag your religion. What are you up to? Creating mischief?

The foreign colonial project that was unveiled at Easter Sunday to destroy ethno-religious co-existence in Sri Lanka, divide and to set up military bases in the northeast while using Tamils and Muslims as Cat’s paws and weaponizing religion is on going.

As the elections approach and US puppet Bondscam Ranil’s days are numbered more Hollywood Style shock and awe attacks to de-stablize the country may be expected.
This “religious” conflict in Mullaitiv is just the beginning of the de-stablization project with 150 so called (fake) US Peace Co. “volunteers with full diplomatic immunity and impunity scripting the narrative and lots of fake news stories too!

Very likely there will be an attempt to assassinate Sajith soon, before or after the elections – just as S.W.R.D was assassinated by a Buddhist monk when the US was weaponizing Buddhism in South and Southeast Asia during the cold war..
SWRD was killed a couple of years before Patrice Lumumba was assassinated in Congo by the US to grab its resources..
Lumumba’s was the assassination of the Century to destroy Congo and large parts of Africa which continues to be looted by US and EU…
Now as the new Cold War looms with the US “pivot to Asia”.. fasten your seat belts..

        Dear JPDP,
Generalization may be unfair but the truth is most of the violence involved Sinhala Buddhist Monks. The fact is that our political leadership may be responsible for bringing religion or religious leaders into politics in Srilanka. Buddhism was brought by racial politicians into governance and the result is continuous bloodbath in the soil. Srilanka never be a peaceful nation as long as thugerism of Buddhist politicians remain powerful.

If not for Buddhism and its followers, especially the Buddhist priests, Sri Lanka would have become another “Apartheid South Africa” with Tamils and Moslims controlling the economy, land and the administrative powers with manipulations by India and the West.

We should be grateful to the contributions of Buddhist priests throughout the history of Sri Lanka. They are preventing Sri Lanka from becoming another Phillippines.

Jayantha Pathberiya, you live in the USA and enjoy equal rights with Christians, blacks, natives, etc. even though you were not born there. Muslims and Tamils have lived in Sri Lanka for many centuries and you have the cheek to deny these minorities the same rights you enjoy and calling them “apartheid” because they were not Buddhists.

You know what makes USA and Singapore great – they didn’t have some Buddhist monks talking peace on one hand and encouraging others towards violence and you seems to be encouraging these racist rhetoric from a distant land while enjoying the rights these countries afforded you.

Muslims and Tamils and Christians ARE SRI LANKANS TOO!

The only one who should be locked up and the keys thrown away is you. For violating the constitution that gives Buddhism the foremost place.

Whether you like it or not that is what the constitution requires. And if you don’t like it, you are free to pack your bags and leave.

Although I am no Buddhist, I don’t see anything wrong with what Sadu is doing. If Hindus and Muslims were allowed to run riot in this country, Buddhism and Christianity would have disappeared long ago.

Btw, for those fellas who do not know this. I was one of the first responders to the scene when the Aranthalawa massacre occurred. You people will never believe what a Gory sight that was. I have never seen something like it even though I have seen many. One of the survivors of that incident, a young monk, immediately disrobed himself and joined the Army. That soldier is now known as the Hasalaka Weeraya.

We must be extremely cautious here. All sorts of claims can be made and only the competent, both with knowledge and authority can decided which is which. Slightest tilt can mean another racial cum religious tension. In the aftermath of 4/21, thanks must go to the Cardinal for restraining the Catholic population from being violent. But the knowledgeable and those in authority would prefer not to make a pronouncement to save their skin. This reminds me of the famous Ayodhya temple and Babri Mosque affair in India. It is understood that this entire stretch of land disputed by all kinds of claims of religious worship belongs to the state and is an archaeological protected. What is the archeological finding of this land?

I guess there was a dispute about the ownership of the place. So authorities should solve it without making time and riots to solve it . There cannot be 2 owners to the same land.

In anycase Monks not respecting Law not acceptable. I dont think any buddhists are there in the area. Just trying to build temples at places where nobody to worship also useless. Majority should act like a majority. But this does not mean minority always correct. Hindus do not harm anybody, should be allowed to live in peace.

    • 0

      Yeah Mr. N. Pathirana,

The Hindus were so peaceful they over-ran Buddhist worshippers and took over all the Buddhist temples of Bodhi-Gaya, Benares, and in fact, most of the Buddhist populace and the culture built by Emperor Ashoka.

It’s been clearly pointed out that it’s not a Hindu temple.

So why should Hindu people & politicians bother about the funeral activity of the said monk in that temple premises.

Don’t Hindus know that every inch of land in the world has become burial ground for thousands of dead animals plants?

Don’t some Hindus slaughter goats in their temples to stain the place with blood?

How many Buddhist monks are cremated in temples in the south?
Zero, in the south we don’t cremate monks in our temples.
So why should we expect it to be different in the North.
It is hypocrisy is it not.
We need to be sincere to ourselves first, before allowing our emotions decide on everything.

A Buddhist Monk was convicted of contempt of court. His appeal to all the higher courts were dismissed and the apex court confirmed the conviction and he was sentenced to seven years RI. His excellency the country’s President visited him in jail and ordered that the monk should be pardoned. Does the President hold the authority to set aside court orders. What kind of legal system this country has.
The same Monk has again committed contempt of court by defying the court order by cremating the body of a monk within Hindu temple premises.

Where is law and are Buddhist monks exempt from the rule of law. This will set precedents for Buddhist monks to carry on committing crimes and defy court orders.

  • 7
    1

One important point is being missed in the discussions. There was a court order. The government instrument that should implement law and order is the police department. It is their duty. They ignored the order. A court order issued by a judge is a powerful instrument of law.
In Sri Lanka police believes that a powerful form of rule of law can be disregarded when dealing with the minority ethnic groups. This was the situation from the day Sri Lanka received independence. It was thought that under the Yahapalanaya government of Mr Sirisena and Mr Wickramasinghe, the police will learn to respect the rule of law for all ethnic groups. That didn’t happen.
The Prime Minister and another powerful minister have condemned the priests for their behaviour. They did not say anything about police behaviour. Mr Gotabaya Rajapakse’s statement implies that rule of law can be disregarded when dealing with any unacceptable behaviour by minority community members. To my knowledge the president who is in charge of law and order had not said anything so far.
There is another aspect to this saga. That is the land grab from Tamils. Both government and opposition leaders seem to condone land grabs.
One of the last visionary statements of Mr Chelvanayagam, former Tamil leader was ‘ Only God can help Tamils’. This must be rewritten to say ‘ Even God can’t help Tamils unless they escape from Sri Lanka.’
There is no doubt that non Budhist citizens must learn to give utmost respect to the Buddhist priests because Buddhism is a great religion and ruling Sinhalese give great respect to the Budhist priests. Hinduism and Budhism have similar concepts about life and both originated in India. In ancient India during the 1000 years before CE several religious thoughts had been debated. Emperor Asoka was attracted to Buddhism above others because it preached non violence. It is a great religion and ruling religion of Sri Lanka. It’s priests must be given utmost respect.

    • 5
      0

Priest should be given ultimate respect when they are able to conduct themselves according to the teaching of the Buddha.
Buddhism is a religion of rationalism. Foundation of buddhism says that one should overcome ignorance by detachment. It is when you detach yourself from worldly things that you can progress in the spiritual way.
Unfortunately I don’t see any trait of detachment in most our bastard priest, who are supposed to be an example to lay people. How do you expect me to give utmost respect to such, is it just because of the saffron uniform?
I would rather honour a Christian priest, hindu priest or a muslim Immam which has virtue, if I must.
The buddha taught that it is deeds that makes a man and not his birth, cast or creed.

Majority cannot behave behave like majority in SL simply because they suffer from severe and extreme form of minority and inferiority complex. So it is simply not possible to change them, in fact it is going to be worse when the sinhala part of the country goes down the pallang. Tragic alright but who is responsible for this chaos. It is no one but Sinhalese. They were misled by history, politicians, buddhist clergy and sadly the so-called numerical advantage though they are not really a majority race to begin with or for that matter a RACE at all. Can you call these yellow robed goons as monks? Just go to some place, plan a bo-tree and try to build a pansala be there people there are not to worship. In Buddhsit areas when there is a hindu kovil all these guys patronise the kovil and presto soon there will be a yellow robed monster will come and camp there with a bo-tree or get some stupid archaeology department guy to claim it was a historic buddhsit place and worst of all “Sinhala Buddhist” place. In fact both are fake. Minority should learn to understand this manifestation of severe inferiority complex and accept their bizarre behaviour as some thing psychological and insecurity but some of these monks go to extreme because they are thugs and not monks and have no idea of education or buddhsim. How far minority can stomach these goons? Country of course is a joke and now buddhism too a HUGE JOKE. Fear of the unknown.

Although I do understand that this country holds a majority in terms of population as Sinhalese Buddhist. However at the end of the day this country is known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri-lanka. So when democracy comes into play what is logically understood is the fact that all people irrespective of race and religion are to be treated equally as per the Constitutional Laws of Sri-lanka. Speaking on a humanitarian basis each and everyone should learn to respect everyone’s culture and religion. Doing such acts to hurt the mind sets of the Hindu Tamils living in Mullaitivu does not prove anything but the uncivilized acts of such extremists. The world is watching and I strongly believe that there has to be a certain degree of respect that we must uphold for one another being a Sri-Lankan. Gauthama Buddha never preached violence or extremism. He brought to this world one of the most beautiful philosophies to live by which I don’t think the extremists (monks) do understand. Further to keep in mind despite 10 years of the war being over, the Tamils is the North are still being deprived of their constitutional rights which I believe that every citizen in this country should be ashamed of. It is rather more difficult to comprehend what these extremists monks are trying to achieve by attacking another Religion. Building a large of statue of the Buddha or building a huge Vihara does not mean you are a buddhist. Learn to live by the principles of Buddhism to prove that you are a true Buddhist.

Writer should not write lies in the article.. The truth is, the land was named by Department of archaeology as a historical Buddhist place long time ago. if you there, you can see that. Anyway you can have and build Buddhist temples anywhere in SL. It is same for other religions too.

Charles, you can build temples if your intentions are clear. But if you use this excuse to change history or racism then it has no place. Buddhist temples are mostly for that reason in N &E for rowdy monks to invade and abuse and exploit. Your meaning of temples for Buddha is same all over SL. Do you think your monks behave like clergy, they are worse than thugs. First these goons must learn Buddhism. Second humanity. There should be a body to check and monitor these goons in yellow robes. They have already destroyed Buddhism in SL. Buddhism in SL is another utterly corrupt political party meant to exploit.

A Hindu temple is not a crematorium or a cemetery to bury racist rogue Buddhist monks or to burn his body but Sinhalese Buddhist Fascists and some their Islamic supporters. This is an ancient Hindu temple and if there are any Buddhist relics in the north or east , they are Tamil and belong to the Tamils and have nothing to do with the Sinhalese who are now trying to falesely claim these as their and use it as an excuse to build Buddhist temples and Budda statues at various strategic and ancient Hindu sites and them settle Sinhalese and Sinhalise these Tamil areas. Tamils are very much aware of this and know what these fake claims means. Buddhism and Lord Buddha who was a Hindu himself are held in high esteem amongst the Tamils , at one time sizeable amount of Tamils both in India and in the NE of the island were Buddhist themselves and helped to spread Buddhism especially to SE Asia as well as to China , Kaolin Buddhism in China was spread by Bhodhidharman who was Tamil prince. Even Tamil Buddhist monks enriched Buddhism in the island. Sinhalese talk too much but never spread Buddhism anywhere. However Tamils hate this Sinhalese Buddhist Fascism , that is not Buddhism at all but racism. Previously Tamils would have welcomed this Buddhist monk amongst them and looked after him , even as late as the 1950s , many Sinhalese are not aware that the Naga Vihara in Jaffna is largely there due to the Tamils in the area , who greatly helped and supported it. Now after 1950s Tamils do not welcome these Buddhist monks and Buddhism , due to what the Sinhalese politicians have done and Sinhalese Buddhist Fascism . They know what all these fake claims and arrival of these Buddhist monks means and their true diabolic intentions.

The views of Ratnam Dharman Poosari of Vavniya Omanthai Sri Nama Amman Kovil should be considered here.
He has apparently said (though not in English) :
“It is a very good thing that the Gurukanda Vihara and the Kovila both exist. The Buddhists can go to the Temple and also to the Kovil, as they normally do. Hindo practice should also include going to the temple and offering a flower to Lord Buddha.
It is these politicians who are creating unnecessary problems. There is no doubt that the Vihara and temple complex existed in ancient times, although the Kovil has flourished in more recent times.”

    Vavuniya Man
Stick to the subject, what people considered is cremation of a monk in the temple premises.that’s why there was a court ruling.
It’s good.to have Buddha statues every junction, any corners ,underneath any trees ,top of the buildings, roofs ,every vehicles,bicycles,……..good is that enough to make as Buddhist country.
If you start counting the statues all over the island we might have more than the population.basic principle “Respect”
Sadly this tiny minority narrow minded people damaging the country’s prospective and the.image..all other countries are moving g.forward but we are going backwards to yakas nagas ….they all have foreign passports off shore investment and they are safe.Geetha kumarasinhga to Gota Abaya dual citizenship ordinary folks struggling for survival.
Brought the Sinhala only without the second thought now international schools are mushrooming.
If Buddha can do miracle pls save this island and have permanent peace good.path.for our generation we lived side by side TNA also failed when chasing the Muslim’s away from Jaffna.how we were struck then same as many Sinhalese now.
LTTR was never supported by all Thamils.they are forcible, lot of us against their principles.
We need unite and keep this beauty of the island.

Learn to co exist and forcibly occupying by power and violence are two different things. These Buddhist monks have a different kind of mindset and thus all these chaos. If Buddhist monks are disciplined than both can co exist and even all the people can co exists. But these guys think they are thugs and politicians and as clergy.

Correctly as somebody mentioned here if authority performs their duties properly & correctly by the law enforced in the country nothing of this sort can take place. This area is under archaeological dept and the temple had been there over a few 100 yrs ago. The new temple had been built over the ruins. The archeological dept bears evidence. This injustice takes place by wish & will of dirty politecians
