Volkswagen Falls Off Yahapālanaya, As Maithri And Ranil Hoodwink Public

Fibs, miscommunication and the blame game were the highlights this week, as the Yahapalanaya government under President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe fell flat on its face after it was exposed how they attempted to deceive millions of people over a vehicle assembly plant in Kuliyapitiya, which the government claimed was built with an investment of US$ 26.5 million from German automaker, Volkswagen.

However just days after Sirisena and Wickremesinghe laid the foundation stone for the vehicle assembly plant, Volkswagen officially denied that it had not invested in any plants in Sri Lanka in a statement issued to News1st. Following this revelation, Wickremesinghe in a bid to save face told an event in Horana that if the private media channel had asked him, he would have ‘revealed’ the truth. He also claimed that Newst1st had a grudge against him and hence was trying to taint his image.

Wickremesinghe also told the meeting in Horana that Volkswagen will be among several other brands of vehicles which would be assembled at the new plant; however the Times Online quoting Volkswagen Spokesperson Katrin Hohmann reported that the German automaker has not granted license to any Sri Lankan company to assemble cars locally.volkswagen-sri-lanka

Apart from holding the post of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Wickremesinghe is also the Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs. Strangely, while, Wickremesinghe now denies Volkswagen’s role in the vehicle assembly plant, his ministry website which carried a news item on the foundation laying ceremony carries a picture of the Volkswagen logo in the article clearly indicating the automaker’s role in the project.

Another interesting fact is that even the Board of Investment (BOI) which comes under the government has carried an article on the event which also includes a quote from BOI Chairman Upul Jayasuriya who had said that the Volkswagen plant would be a major leapfrog for the country in the right direction.volkswagen-sri-lanka

However, since the controversy, the BOI is yet to issue an official statement to clarify the current situation centering the vehicle assembly plant and as to who the actual investor is and the brands of cars that will be assembled once the plant construction is completed.

State media including the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and the Daily News also carried news items soon after the event stating that Volkswagen invested in the Kuliyapitiya plant.

When the public took to social media and criticized deputy foreign minister Dr. Harsha de Silva for hoodwinking the public, Silva defended himself saying he never hoodwinked anyone and after initiating the possible investment with Volkswagen, and after maneuvering through difficult territory in terms of possible export, tax and other implications, both he and the then Ambassador of Germany Dr Jurgen Morhard moved out of the process and handed over the responsibility to the implementing parties in the government.

According to Silva, soon after Senok Automobile and BOI signed an agreement in August 2015, Volkswagen, after months of denial, had admitted to the EPA in the US that they had cheated on emissions tests on some of their diesel models in the US, which resulted in the German automobile company’s stocks crashing, and subsequently the senior management at the company being fired, while at least some 30,000 jobs were cut among billions of rupees lost.

“This scandal that rocked Volkswagen was a complete shock to everyone, obviously including us in Sri Lanka. Apparently Senok Automobiles who had signed for Volkswagen had attempted to save the agreement and continue with the investment as planned. However, at one point, I believe after much negotiations the Government had decided it would be better not to go with a dedicated Volkswagen assembly plant due to possible legal issues that could crop up due to the massive fallout from their emissions scam. This we knew today when the Prime Minister explained the sequence of events to us,” Silva said in his post.

He added that, given the BOI agreement had still been in place with Senok Automobiles for the original Volkswagen assembly, the company had rescued the project by agreeing with the BOI to go ahead to establish the plant to assemble various makes of European automobiles.

The deputy foreign minister however blamed the BOI saying that the BOI should have announced to the media the changes made in the contract with regard to the car assembly plant in Kuliyapitiya. “It’s unfortunate it was not done,” he added. (By Munza Mushtaq)

This government deliberately tries to confuse people by issuing various statements. This factory issue is not isolated. If you check the projects they undertook from the very beginning, this hoodwinking public is government’s modus operandi.

If you watched Derana Prime time News today (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51UyfJBHIVI), you can see that they even try to confuse Mahanayakas. While My3 says there is no agreement and nothing will be signed tomorrow (7th), Sujeewa Senasinghe claims that there will be a signing ceremony with the Chinese Company. This is an utter disaster.

      Shan,

if VOLKWAGEN has their own problems within the company, why should we wait for them long, do you think it was no right the current govt to go foward with other plants. Why the men of this country always see it that pessimistic.
I think it is a bold action taken by the govt. Just for saboteuers everything is seen like devils.
People of thi scountry, if there are no jobs, they attack govt and politicians.

People of this country also attack when investors are trying to create better environment.

It is all because of the mentality problem.. they have been controlled only by Astrologers or the like Thakkadiyas.

Today, each and everyone is attacked no matter he is President, PM or someone else. But in the days of Maharaja ifanyone stood against them, they would have been ended up with a murder.
Remember, please respect the current govt and their actions.

Leasing is not selling. Those men that want to return to power … using and abusing prvt senders attack the current men mostly for nothing.

      God bless to srilanka.

Yes. Can we use the Right to Information act to demand that all investment coming into Sri Lanka be made public to avoid black money or the Rajapaksas stolen money from coming into all these development projects all over the country!?

Srilanken average are abused by Derana, Sirasa and Hiru TV channenls.

These three channels without thinking twice just add arbitorily to please their bill payers. If these three would have thought it better, things would have been telecasted in a peaceful manner.
All what we want is to win the hearts and minds of the investors if we really want to create jobs inthe country.

Leasing is not selling. These men should correct it now else, people will end up all anxities.

Astrologers and ABOVE media men are the real problem of the day inthis country.
How many among the average have the chance to see good balace thoughts coming from diverse news media institutiions.
I think media have to rethink if they are really right.

Hiru would do it by hook or crook, since their only focus is to bring MR et al back to get released their brother.
Then they can let the Drug men to continue their businesses.

Sirasa – Killi people you are good at some issues but worst as Derana with many issues when it goes creating anxities of the innocient people.

To all the Yakkos who still believe in Santa Claus….This was another blatant lie, that boomaranged on the Yahapalanaya liers!

VW despite its current emissions disaster in the US, is a automobile giant with many brands like Audi, under its umbrella. $23.5 million spent to build a glorified shed in Kuliyapitiya is simply an assembly plant for knocked down vehicles. Call it VW, UMC Mazda (Remember Upali Motors?) or anything else, it is not a Volkswagen plant and will never be one.

Ranil Wickremesinghe knew very quickly the cat was out of the bag. Being the ‘Royal’ hoodwinker he is, he thought the gamayas would not figure out the lie. Now, everyone is running for cover and poor Harsha De Silva is pushed out, to whitewash the lies.

Seriously Harsha? The government of Sri Lanka DECIDED to ignore VW’s plea to open a plant in Sri Lanka because of its emissions scandal in the US???? Aney Harsha, when did any one of you discover your moral compass? Do you know where it is Harsha? Bend over, and look at a mirror….They think we are all Yakkos!

What are all these bla bla…

VW has problems, we have to for the moment see other investors basta.

Why you guys just make stories out of them man ? All these can only help most abusive bunch of the nation.. who are none other than Rajaakshe supporters.
All kind of high criminals would supporters Rajaakshes since they know their life styles cant further be continued under the current outfit.

Besides, RW and MS are both from Srilnaka. And we cant expect 100% clean attitudes in them too. But if we have both evil parties, we have to chose the lessesr devil(evil).
Lankens are good at point the fingers at others but not knowing who they really ? WE ARE JUST AN ANOTHER HUNGRY NATION ONLY – whose majority of folks dont earn even 2 dollars a day.
So what is wrong with getting if not VW other companies to invest in the country so that the average can be benefited.

Thrisannu.. born thrisannu filled srilanka will never raise its head so long the majority folks are so saboteuers.

Mr. Prime Minister: How did you forgot what you said at a public meeting held in Kurunegala ob 2016-11-27? In your speech, you categorically stated that Volkswagen car company will be starting a assembly factory in 2017 and that would be the start of the “Development Stage” of the Government. That “speech” (in video) is now circulating in social media. Interestingly, your speech in Horana, after laying the “Foundation Stone” for the factory is also circulating again in social media. That is where you said:” why ask Volkswagen Co. they should have asked me and I would have given the information of that not coming to Sri Lanka”. Don’t you have an atom of shame to continue with these pranks, having already proved to be a prankster since assuming in that position as Prime Minister. Another “laughable matter” is, you without any shame, in that speech, you refer to “Buddhist Principles” and hail what a person should be – the very principle you have blatantly violated and ignored. Added to the injury, the Volkswagen Company has expressly denied having granted authority to any Agency to represent them in Sri Lanka. Now what is BOI going to say, that which is headed by another henchmen of you? Also, now tell the people who is “Financing” that “Construction” of the Assembly Plant in Kurunegala. Will the “Foundation Stones” the President and you placed at that ceremony take root and bear fruits? Hope you as the Minister in-charge give the country a progress report on the construction and the provision of 2500 promised jobs.

We warned him several times that trick only to save the Old Royals from UN electric Chair. There are news saying in today’s TNA’s meeting parties have been tough on Sampanthar for he continuing in the constitutional committee after government has told TNA none of their bottom lines they asked can be honored.

Interesting, in the end the truth comes out.

Even the Catholic Church could not stop the Truth of a moving Earth come out, despite burning Giardano Bruno at the stake, imprisoning Galileo, banning astronomy books etc.

So the Yahapakanaya, will not be successful, especially when headed by Sirisena, the Turncoat, Traitor, Gona, Mala-Pereyaya and Sevalaya.

Is Sirisena training Ranil W? After all, Mahinda Rajapaksa trained Sirisena over 10 years.

It’s high time that we realized politicians of both major parties in SL consider voters as suckers and take them for a good ride.

Most of these politicians have never been employed in their entire lifetime. Only very few even have a basic education. Some use various ruses to obtain bogus qualifications. However these people consider their families are ’empowered’ to rule Sri Lanka.

Lying to voters and stealing the tax payers money by various means is common. Volkswagen episode and infamous duty free luxury vehicles permits are two such examples. Such things happened in secrecy ealier and now they do it openly. Most of their children study overseas. As per SB Dissanayakes own admission they sometimes visit Las Vegas and gamble in Casinos. Some others hire Limos to travel in the US.

Basic auditing of politicians wealth from the time they commenced the political careers will proove this. However politicians from both sides do not allow this to happen. Even people like Sajin Wass who openly played out roam freely. He didnt have money to pay his rent in 2000 and became a multi millionaire in 2014. This is the reality.

Another ruse used by them is not to seriously develop the country so that they could continue to exploit the majority of uneducated voters.

As Bandula Jayasekara mentioned, in Pethikada, in developed countries politicians call their voters as Sir/Madam because they are elected by the voter. However the stupidity of Sri Lankan voter is such that we go behind these idiots and worship them.

UNTIL & UNLESS THE VOTERS REALISE THEIR STUPIDITY AND ELECT POLITICIANS FIT TO GOVERN THE COUNTRY, SRI LANKA WILL REMAIN AN UNDEVELOPED COUNTRY. EVEN THOUGH WE MAY NOT REALISE WE ARE GLOBALLY CONSIDERED CLOSE TO SUDAN SOMALIA ETC.

“It’s high time that we realized politicians of both major parties in SL consider voters as suckers and take them for a good ride. “

Once Amarasiri heard about complaints from Goviyas(Farmers) about the the Gamarala taking most of the harvest from the hard work of the Goviyas.

Looks like this has been scaled up by the politicians of both parties.

What are the tools of their trade? Lying, deception, thievery, corruption etc., are some of the tools.

Take for example Sirisena, He has earned titles and turned out to be a Turncoat, Traitor, Gona (colloquial Sinhala), Mala-Perethaya, and Sevalaya to the 6.2 million voters who voted for him.

      Will Sirisena earn more titles?

My comment was a general description of current trends in Sri Lanka. Instead of bashing politicians we the voting public should take responsibility for this situation.

We have historically elected corrupt individuals and thugs with very high preferences primarily for our personal benefit thereby neglecting our responsibility to the country to elect honest and educated individuals fit to givern the country. As far as I can remember this tendency go back as far as JRJs time and became extremely bad during MRs regime.

In this background politicians have taken it for granted that voters are suckers and they can eat the peice of meat and throw the bones to the voters.

WHAT WE REQUIRE IS A PARADIGM SHIFT IN OUR THINKING AS VOTERS.We have to forget party differences, get to gether and pressurise political parties to select honest and capable people if they want our votes.

Besides, why should VW or other known auto-makers come to politically unstable Sri Lanka whereas nearby Tamilnadu has for many decades established itself as a more acceptable, reliable and secure partner. TN boasts an established pool of necessary urban high-value infra-structure, educated engineering, technical personnel as well as sufficient acreage for large factories. Whatever shortage of water and power of the industries is produced by supplementary sources within the factory sites.

Most embassies here are aware of the cut-throat competition between trade unions to start strikes for the slightest excuse. Of course, the reason is usually not the interest of the worker but corruption on the part of their greedy leaders. It is an open secret most trade unions, like some of our mainline media, are in the black-mailing business. This is an area and a discussion that should enter the public attention if we are to have a more reputable trade union feature.

One commentator here has aptly called the issue hoaxwagon while another reminds rarely are multiple auto brands manufactured within the same facility – unless the conspiracy is more an assembly exercise importing parts rather than a genuine manufacturing operation. This is usually to circumvent high Customs Duty.

The bitter truth is the country is in its last groans – economically.
The declining strength of the devalued rupee and the weekly rising of essential food is evidence the state of bankruptcy is intensifying. Even Ranil, with the assured support of his Davos friends in the West, might not be able to salvage the damage that has been done to the country in the last decade – including the past two years. The only alternative left is, as Gamarala has shown more than once recently, is to seek divine intervention.

This is a flying shot to invite Modi and India to manufacture and take a slice off Chennai the Indian leader.- Joke of the Lankan pirates- cheap labour and skilled labour to H1B.
    Ranil playing juice with neighbour.

According to the New York Times, India’s strong engineering base and expertise in the manufacturing of low-cost, fuel-efficient cars has resulted in the expansion of manufacturing facilities of several automobile companies like Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Maruti Suzuki. In 2009 India (0.23m) surpassed China (0.16m) as Asia’s fourth largest exporter of cars after Japan (1.77m), Korea (1.12m) and Thailand (0.26m).
The majority of India’s car manufacturing industry is evenly divided into three “clusters”. Around Chennai is the southernmost and largest, with a 35% revenue share, accounting for 60% of the country’s automotive exports, and home of the operations of Heavy Vehicles Factory, Engine Factory Avadi, Ford, Hyundai, Renault, Mitsubishi, Nissan, BMW, Hindustan Motors, Daimler, Caparo, Mini, and Datsun.
Near Mumbai, Maharashtra, along the Chakan corridor near Pune, is the western cluster, with a 33% share of the market. Audi, Volkswagen, and Skoda are located in Aurangabad. Mahindra and Mahindra has an SUV and engine assembly plant at Nashik. General Motors, Tata Motors, Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, Jaguar Cars, Fiat, and Force Motors have assembly plants in the area.

With all respect to you Thrisu, this has nothing to do them being rogues. But this can happen. I know very well BEING in Germany how this could have happened. I also called to VW HEAD quarters in Germany a year ago. They had been very much wanting to start a work site in SL as agreed upon. But circumstances the company s been facing has caused them to deny it for point of this time.

Yahapalana PM Batalanada Ranil even lied to his Buddhist Spiritual leader Malwatta Boss Mahanayaka.

President Bodhi Sira had to pay a visit to pacify the Mahanayaka by promising that there won’t be any Eelaam’s in batalanadas new Constitution.

      It is called damage control.

Harsha is very clever. Clever enough to leave economy for others and start in foreign ministry instead. He knows the real state of our economy and didn’t want to be seen responsible for the future mess that is unavoidable.

There is no doubt. Ranil said more than once that VolksWagen is coming. It was case of the cry “Wolf! Wolf!”. Now if he expects us to believe that he never said that, what does he takes us for? A set of stupid idiots who will always say “Yes Sir!” to him?.

The man who mingled with us then, now has the roads blocked when he moves about. Whenever he comes in or goes out of his Fifth Lane residence, all the vehicles are stopped at a healthy distance away creating a traffic snarl.

I knew the performance of the man, though I voted for his crowd in Jan 8, 2015.

In the colonial times the Westerners brought labor from TN to Lankawe. It is not one time, but over four centuries. Even the kings have brought from Kerala and TN. The main reason is Ceylon labor is not reliable.

After the freedom the down turn of the country’s position is prime example of indicating the quality of the internal labor. That is no new labor is brought from TN and Kerala, nothing has moved forward. No big western country is producing anything in Lanka, recently. When I was a small boy, Unilever’s, Union Carbide, BCC, Lipton, Brooke Bond …were doing small & large manufacturing for foreign companies. That trend did not hold.

One of the biggest pus – wedilla was the one came from Sirimavo. She promised rice from moon. But even the Modaya crowd did know that was only an election stunt. But not all Sinhalese come to know was the Petroleum discovery in Mannar. The Norwegians, a tiny, tiny country compared to 22 million populations Lankawe, doing exploration in the North. Sirimavo was robbing the government, hiding everything media, including the famine that was so severe in her time. Truths were forbidden to media, which were her blow pipes only.
Media was treated as pariah in her time. So the mere research of the possibility of existence Oil had been advertised in Media as barrels and barrel of Oil is going to come out of Mannar. When there was no oil and Norway had left, Sirimavo hired handy men to pour crude Oil in the barren land and invited Media to photograph it and announce as Oil found and GOSL is going to drill. Oil drama continued in the Old Royal times too.

The world who took workers from Tamil Nadu now knows where the workers are and taking the production facilities there. Lankawe had more developed infrastructure than TN when the foreign companies started to flock Tamil Nadu ignoring Lankawe. Companies know Lankawe is good only to create fireworks in media.
Other than Secretary John Kerry, High Commissioner Prince Zeid and Opposition Leader Sampanthar nobody else had put any faith in having pacts with Lankawe.

Lankans should first start to assemble Bullock carts, then Bicycles, then learn to bake a good loaf of bread, then learn to work hard, then learn to drive with others safety in mind, then learn to elect honest politicians to public office, then learn to bless the land on which they stand, so on and so forth.

It may take another 1000 years for Lankans to achieve the above and if they are dedicated they may get there otherwise its back to the frying pan from the fire.

Apologies to all the few, good , honest, God fearing, hard working, lankans, but the majority are thrash unlike their neighbours in the sub continent.

If the “Devil” were to offer everything free to lankans they would gladly sign their souls over to the ugly beast without batting an eyelid.

    Sad but true.

Yes ! it is sad but true. If Lanka were known as Ceylon and its people known as Ceylonese like in the good old past then today the lovely land would have made good progress in all that it endeavored to do.
But alas ! the greedy, physically and mentally ugly minded politicians dug the graves of their own people and brought them down to the lowest level of petty minded attitudes.
Today the country should have been manufacturing everything from a pin to a BMW to a warship like its neighbor India but sadly it is to late.
Let lankans continue to travel in Ashok Leylands while their neighbors travel in the state of the art Volvo buses and Metro systems and hoist their flags on Air craft carriers and Missile cruisers and sale the blue waters of the oceans.

SHAME ON YOU POLITICIANS OF SR ILANKA.

Moral of the story: “Don’t believe whatever this government says, wait till that happens”

They told and still tell 100’s of things. Out of which only 5 maybe implemented. Then out of 5, only 1 or 2 worked and gave the expected result.

Funny thing is, they still continue to tell

    CT and others,

    “the BOI agreement”

When can we study the agreement with Senok? Top secret due to business reasons or RTI can be used? Don’t we have the right to know?

In most countries 20 million USD is peanuts.

I seem to remember that HSBC paid shareholders 6 BILLION usd in dividends in 2015.
