President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday declared that his government will ensure that Sri Lanka will never return to war, and all necessary steps were being taken to promote post war reconciliation in the country.
Speaking at the ceremony to commemorate the war heroes in Battaramulla, Sirisena also said that certain people who put war heroes behind bars, are today going around creating a fear psychosis saying the current government are hunting down war heroes.
“We are not hunting down our war heroes, after all we were not the ones who jailed the main war hero and got him to wear prison clothes,” Sirisena said.
“The people gave us the country with the expectation that we will work towards ensuring that our country does not go back to a war. This is not an easy task, but we will ensure the faith kept in us is maintained and we will take all necessary steps to strengthen reconciliation in Sri Lanka,” he said.
He called on politicians, war heroes and the people to join hands in this reconciliation process. “It is not an easy task to unite the hearts of the people while fulfilling of the responsibilities of a post-conflict era after ending the war physically. Politicians, war heroes and the people of the entire country should get together to strengthen the reconciliation process,” Sirisena added.

That is pure rhetoric. War or not, it cannot be simply decided by a Government. We can only hope for but we can never be sure there won’t be war. There are two sides and if the other side pushes for war, you are simply helpless but to go for a war against your wishes. I am sure My3 knows this. So if other side once again demands Eelam and prepares for war is My3 going to give Eelam for the sake of never to have a war? This is very clear his speech is only rhetoric without substance.
But I can see the veiled message he is trying to tell through this rhetoric that he will not prosecute war criminals. That is all to his nicely covered rhetoric.
Do not trust local investigations and local judges, we can see what the verdict will be. My3 has reveled it if anyone intelligent to interpret. They will not find any soldiers guilty of war crimes! That verdict has already been decided, the rest of the local inquiry and the hearing by the local judges are merely a drama and mockery for international and local consumption.
We all know how Thajudeen’s murder during Rajapakse’s time was covered up by all officers conniving, including the police and the JMO making it a Road accident! This case was taken up again by the present Government only for political reasons to checkmate Rajapakse and not because to bring law and order to the country and to sympathize with the dead ruggerite. The same corruption and nepotism still flourishing under My3 who promised to completely eradicate but after getting elected simply allowed the old practice to continue for their own personal benefits.
What has happened to the young motorcyclist who was hit and run by a Minister’s vehicle? No action taken. It may be the fault of the motor cyclist but Minister failed to stop after being hit, because the other involved is now critically ill in hospital. So nothing has changed to bring rule of law or transparency, but only to use the law to seek revenge against their political enemies.
I could tell only an International Investigation with International judges could deliver justice to the civilian victims of war crimes who suffered at the hands of the military. We could clearly read between the lines what My3 implied by his speech, no soldiers will be prosecuted for their war crime if any.

Of course, the Government need not hunt down war heroes. But it is necessary to hunt down those who did participate in “criminal” activities making use of the the war. One such case is the “disappearance” of Eknligoda. There is a “campaign” organized and headed by the ex President, the “Joint Opposition” and the “BBS” to get those accused in that case acquitted stating all those in remand custody are “War Heroes”. Should that be allowed? No. They would have been engaged in the war, but if any of them are guilty of that “Disappearance” all such persons must be made liable and punished accordingly. Vedar sometimes refer to themselves as “Veda Vellalar”, thus claiming a high caste ranking (the Vellalar are given the highest ritual position within the caste structure of Sri Lankan Tamils in many regions).
