UPFA Anuradhapura district candidate Weerakumara Dissanayake, a key ally of Wimal Weerawansa, is now under investigation as the Police have found nearly 3000 posters of the candidate being transported in a vehicle that had a fake army number plate.
Police are conducting inquires to find out whether this had been done with the knowledge of the candidate.
Dissanayake, a stalwart of the National Freedom Front, was a deputy minister of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa government.
Police Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara told media yestersya that two individuals were also arrested with the cab. The rear number plate of the vehicle was forged as an Army number plate, Gunasekara said.
The incident happened two days after Weerawansa’s made a statement on white van with an “altered number plate” belonging to the Army headquarters

In the drama that is unfolding, President Rajapaksa is the scriptwriter while the police and the general public are the supporting actors. NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa is acting the role of the main comedian, said DNA Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Mr. Dissanayake made this statement at a media conference held today on the hunger strike led by NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa being held outside the UN office in Colombo. He also said that this is not a real protest but a joke.
This protest has been sponsored by the government from the beginning, Anura Kumara claimed. He said that the police who came to supposedly sort out the situation did not even have a baton, and not a single tear gas canister was to be seen. Furthermore he said that the protesters even attacked the police towards the end of the incident.
Anura Kumara Dissanayake added that neither the police nor the government will react in this way if the protest was led by the members of the opposition. He reminded the way the police reacted to the protest led by the Democratic National Alliance in front of the Fort railway station demanding that the government release retired Gen. Sarath Fonseka who is under military custody.
He said even the Buddhist monks who had attended the protest were removed forcibly and legal action taken against them.
