What Did Sri Lanka Get Out Of CHOGM?

By Sharmini Serasinghe

Sharmini Serasinghe

Sharmini Serasinghe

It appears that our Emperor’s attempts to show-off his new clothes viz spanking new infrastructure, spotless city etc., to the world through CHOGM went seriously wrong!

At the expense of the Lankan tax-payer we managed however to provide a free and very expensive platform for the LTTE diaspora to be heard through the Etoneducated gab of none other than the British Prime Minister David Cameron himself. He made no bones about why he was coming to Sri Lanka and what he was going to do here and he did it!

The Indian PM let his British counterpart do all his dirty-work and stayed at home blaming it on ‘domestic’ problems.

The LTTE rump managed to get Sri Lanka to foot the bill for a hugely successful international media blitz held on our own soil to espouse their cause.

Prince Charles had a nice Birthday party!

Other CHOGM invitees had an all-expense-paid holiday in sunny Sri Lanka and went home.

All’s well that ends well, but what did Sri Lanka get out of hosting this carnival?

Besides egg on our faces, we got as ‘gifts’ two old boats from Australia which might otherwise have ended up in a scrap yard, with two caveats attached they are to be used for preventing any prospective Sri Lankan asylum seekers making a nuisance of themselves in Australia and the Sri Lankan tax-payer must foot the bill for the “rebuilding” of these ‘gifted’ old boats!

And of course we and our future generations were landed with a LOT of bills amounting to over a staggering Rs. 6 billion which we the tax-payers must pay over many years to come!

That’s about it, as far as what Sri Lanka got from hosting this mega carnival!

What Sri Lanka didn’t get from this event is a long list of negatives that may go on forever.

To start with, according to local media reports city hotel occupancy levels were far below expectations. The originally expected occupancy of 4,000 city hotel rooms was never realised with only 50% of that at approximately 2100 rooms being actually occupied during the event.

Reports further state that if not for CHOGM, the average occupancy rates of city hotels at this time of the year would have been around 75% to 80% percent. One leading hotelier reportedly claims that his hotel lost “a good Rs.80 million of business due to CHOGM”. And that is only the reported loss of one hotel. What about the others that carried out massive refurbishment of their properties in time for CHOGM?

Almost all of Colombo’s schools were closed for two weeks and Universities Island wide also closed for one week disrupting education.

The massive economic losses incurred by business enterprises, due to disruption caused by road closures and restriction on vehicular traffic is mind boggling.

I hope an honest cost benefit evaluation will be carried out to assess if the benefits of hosting this ‘show’ outweigh the cost or vice versa.

The only positive indicator so far is that Sri Lanka’s business community was pleased with the exposure the country received as a prospective destination for trade, investment and tourism. However it is still too early to predict how successful the much touted Commonwealth Business Forum (CBF) was, as impressive numbers of foreign participants is not an indicator of its success.

In a new world-order where trade is more important than politics, let us hope nevertheless, that some measure of success was derived through visiting business leaders and entrepreneurs linking up with one another and that it would ultimately transform into investment agreements benefiting the country.

At least then we would stand to benefit from this otherwise useless exercise called CHOGM!

      Hey Sharmini Serasinghe,

Did the so-called LTTE-rump ask your Sinhala junta to hold the CHOGM in Colombo?

Sinhala arrogance shows in your article via calling the Tamil diaspora as LITE-diaspora. This is what the Sinhalese have been doing for 65 years and continuing: Demonizing Tamils; why is there a large diaspora – because of your atrocities. Why don’t you call the diaspora as Tamil terrorist diaspora?

You are of the same mind set as all Sinhala chauvinists – Mahawamsa mind set!

Don’t play Sinhala goody and put all the blame on LTTE: Prabhkarn was a toddler who witnessed anti-Tamil Sinhala state sponsored pogrom in 1958. So you see why the LTTE was born.

Don’t talk about the irrelevant things: You Sinhala Intellectuals”, (are you?), need to do an introspection about yourselves and your leaders since 1948 for all the downfall brought on you, and on Tamils too.

CHOGM Colombo was mess because of the crimes against humanity and Genocide of Tamils of your beloved regime.

Stop writing slanted articles, or are you an embedded one too?

        Thiru,

You either need to get your eyesight corrected or brain re-tuned.

Where does the author refer to the Tamil diaspora as LTTE diaspora?

Perhaps in your eyes both are one and the same.

To many Sinhala writers Navi Pillai, Solheim, Callum Macrae, Vickramababu and many others are tigers: Anybody expressing views against Sinhala majoritarianism is a tiger. All Tamils abroad are LTTE-rump: This is how you refer to Tamils.

Sinhalese are goodies with 2500 years of civilization, but still wanting.

              Thiru,

You sound like a fellow suffering from a terrible inferiority complex caused by an identity issue.

Tell me, if Eelam became a reality would you or would you not be jumping for joy?

To us Sinhalese LLTE Diaspora or Rump mean those who want a separate state in our country and the rest we call Tamil Diaspora. So which one do you belong to?

                Mahadana you Sinhalese Moron,

Get in to your thick head mate. We have no inferiority Complex and for your information. The Tamil Diaspora and the LTTE Diaspora and one and the same.
Tamil Eelam is in the MAKING.
I take it you beileve in Democracy but I wouldnt be surprised if you are like MR and believe in Dictatorship. But on the assumption that you are a Democrat 87% ( the rest fiddled) of the Tamils at the last election responded to LTTE message and whether you like it or not Prabakrans message is going to be around for a very long time which was a creation of your atrocities for 63 Years.
So we are not prepared to take lectures from you. We will be happy to settle for a State within a State but if you dont agree to it then BJP will carve out a Tamil State. So TAKE it or LEAVE it the choice is yours.

” Sinhalese have been doing for 65 years and continuing: Demonizing Tamils “

Recorded history must be wrong. From before the Independence the Tamil political demand was for ‘Equal Representation’, mere democracy was so yesterday.
If Sri Lanka had been left with a ‘government’ like in Bahrain where the 10% Sunni minority rules by edict, then the Tamils would have been satisfied. The West attempts to impose democracy on Libya, Egypt, and Syria by the use of force, both direct and via terrorist proxies, but protecting the democratic government in Sri Lanka by fighting and elimiting the most barbaric terrorist group on earth was somehow unpalatable because it was achieved against the ‘considered advice’ of the West.
Sri Lanka should be run for the benefit of all Sri Lankans, and NOT for that of the LTTE rump who funded the terrorists and who are no longer Sri Lankans.

Whenever there is an LTTE flag it is an LTTE rump demonstration NOT a Tamil diaspora demonstration- learn the difference man.

Don’t blame the state for the 1958 Race riots. The riots were started by Tamils who killed innocent Sinhalese civilians in Jaffna, and racist Tamil politicians like dumb Chelva and Sundaralingam who provoked Tamil hatred towards Sinhalese. Prabahakaran was a product of vile Tamil racism and low quality breeding and not a product of riots in 1958. No good blaming Mahawansa mindset, but look at your own Jaffna mindset, an inferiioty complex that breeds inferior goons and bring about your own downfall. Learn to live dignified lives rather than run around blaming everybody else for you own stupidly. Australia is giving gun boats to Sri Lanka to keep your people away from Australia. Canada is locking up your tribe as they arrive. You people aren’t welcomed anywhere, and your own homeland Tamil Nadu is a hell hole Sri Lankan Tamils do not want to go to. Wake up, behave and Get a Life!

Sharmini, certainly not. You are mistaken, politics are different, & far away from your beautiful face.

By hosting a summit & getting all participation & some 27 heads of states including Prince Charles was a success ,that itself was a huge endorsement of Lanka’s vibrant democracy which we cherished from 1931 on wards & continuing, though British PM went out of the way to satisfy BTF/LTTE diaspora, wouldn’t have done any damage practically to Sri Lanka, perhaps it’s big positive to read Lanka a working democracy , so much so that any body could even criticize, here itself, though himself an honored invitee.
I’m afraid if David himself would pay the price, one day, for violating his own British Commonwealth principles, in search of few more votes from Tamils/BTF/LTTE Diaspora.

But Lanka lost nothing, got everything by hosting CHOGM.

“The LTTE rump managed to get Sri Lanka to foot the bill for a hugely successful international media blitz held on our own soil to espouse their cause.”

I think you should rephrase and statement as follows:

“The LTTE rump benefited from the stupid Sri Lankan government fooitng the…”

after all the whole world was crying out to shift the CHOGAM from Colombo to some other country

    so Sharmini just grow up

Sharm dear, all this is obvious to those who read this website.

So you must translate this into Sinhala and publish in Lanka Deepa – to educate the Sinhalaya modayas who vote for Rajapassa. It is they who will foot the bill for his CHOGASM which turned into a damp squib!

Please translate and publish this in the Sinhala press – Lanka Deepa, Divayina etc.
It is the Sinhalaya modayas that need to see this!

However, your Sinhala nationalism and attribution of what Cameron said to the Tamil Diaspora is very silly because Britain has an embassy in Colombo. I am sure that Ambassador Rankin and his staff who is an educated balanced man who would have brief Cameron very well..
So, get with the plot Sharmini, can your fake patriotism and Sinhala Nationalism.
Guess the Sinhala nationalism is partly a cover to attack Rajapassa but rally very silly and quite tiresome!

Abhaya – it’s not the building of the highways that is a waste of our (taxpayers’) money, rather, it is the inflated costs brought about by the commissions, deals, and interest on the inflated loans that is the problem. As you do not have to pay for any of this (being a resident of the US), it is understandable that you are not concerned. But if you truly love this country (and its current leaders as you undoubtedly do), then you should return and help to get it together. But then, I guess it is easier for you to be critical when you have no idea of the problems faced by a majority of the citizens.

But the point is far from understanding to asylum seekers like Abhaya. He said on some other thread how he went to ecstasy having toughed the soil after his return to the island after 8 years. Ones like me travelling to lanka 1-2 on regular basis, feel building are there, but nation building has been eroded heavily.
Abaya is related to BANDA, SAROJINI, JIMSOFTY. They are all the apologists of ruling thugs.

Abhaya would HAVE to fall unconscious next time when he returns to lanka…just looking at KATUNAYAKA HIGH WAY huh :)

    Well Sharmini,

You say we got egg on our faces. But I think the benifit of MR and Co being accepted as the elected leadership of the nation far outweighs the egg thrown by a single leader, Briton’s DC.

CHOGM at least gave the citizenry a couple of weeks to relax and take stock. The city got cleaned up. The airport highway was opened. The business community got some positive exposure. The police behaved themselves. Did you see how well the police reacted when the grieving women beseiged DC’s car in Jaffna. No guns, no batons, no tear gas and no mass arrests. Our own BBS boys tried hard to keep out of mischief other than to roufle some UNP feathers at the absurd exhiblition at Sri Kotha. Thankfully even Mervin was kept under house arrest. Many world leaders had a glimpse of our beautiful country. DC had a chance to win over some Tamil votes towards the tories. And finally due to the ultimatum given by DC some inquiry will eventuate either internally or externally about the human rights violations during and after the war with LTTE.

So all in all, despite what you say, I say CHOGM achieved a lot for the country if not for MR and Co.

      BBS Rep,

“CHOGM at least gave the citizenry a couple of weeks to relax and take stock.”

Take stock of what, the cost they will have to bear for this show?

“The police behaved themselves. Did you see how well the police reacted when the grieving women besieged DC’s car in Jaffna. No guns, no batons, no tear gas and no mass arrests.”

Yes it was all beautifully choreographed and they all acted according to the script.

DC should have seen how the police actually behave when they are not being scrutinized by international media.

      BBS ,

you sound frank and posses the the right mental capacity to see things as they are . i agree with the author ,as expected CHOGM 2013 was a flop and is a real eye opener for the “frog in the well” regime and its backers , as far as i see the most noticeable immediate outcome of the circus was , getting exposed to the foreign media of the true picture of MR style politics in SL and also getting expedited war crime investigation , with David C ultimatum MR has not much options left , earlier it was N.Pillai , diaspora and NGOs were after international investigation , now an influential UNHRC voting member is calling the shots , it is interesting to see who the voting members for 2014 UNHRC (47-15), even though SL is heavily depends on China , Russia and Cuba on their vote , their membership has been turned down (in other words they are not qualified ), taking in to the considerations of ground reality of Geneva ,indeed coming colours are no good for MR.

      @ Bodu Bala Sales Rep.

What our Bodu Bala Saleman says here is the real truth despite what Shamini Serasingha says. These are the things what we got from hosting CHOGM in our Country.

      1. Our Boss becomes the Head of Commonwealth countries and in the future Her Majesty should consult her boss before she decide anything.

      2. Rajapaksha Family becomes owners of 54 pieces of brand new Mercedes Benz and 60 pc’s of brand new defenders.

      3. People around the world came to know how our Saddarmadveepa Chakrawarthi protecting Human rights.

      4. Whole world realized the real Journalism in our Govt. sponsored Independent Media and Electronic Media.

      5. Whole world realized who is behind killing of Lasantha Wickramathunga and 32 others as the way Govt. treated channel 4 team.

      6. Everybody realized who is behind disappearance of Prageeth Eknaligoda and many others as the way Govt. treated Jhonathan Miller and Callum Macrae.

      7. Now there is no secret as to who is behind attacking Journalists like Poddala Jayantha, Keith Nohear etc.

      8. Govt. clearly showed the whole world that only Govt. Goons can organize any protest anywhere in the country including in high security Zones.

      9. Govt. Clearly showed that Sri Lanka Mass Media Minister is really a “Ambaruwa”

      10. Whole world came to know that our Saddarmadveepa Chakrawarthi has a blood relationship with Lord Buddha by interpreting what Lord Buddha said to his advantage.

      11. The Whole world came to know that how stupid Sri Lankan Gen. Public is.

      12. Saddarmadveepa Chakrawarthi proved that he is uneducated and uncivilized thug.

      13. Whole world has seen the “Seethambara Pata Saluwa” of our Emperor.

      14. Govt. Proved that Armed forces also can organize protests as civilians.

      15. Govt. Shows the whole world how efficient our Intel. service is.

      16. Govt. shows that how they protect rights of the Tamil people in the north.

      17. Our Emperor proved that he is not only related to “Suddhodana Family” but has a connection with ” King Chethiya” family as well while proving he has another connection with “King Kakkile”.

      18. Our Emperor has a record of hosting a Commonwealth summit with lowest attended summit in it’s history.

      19. Gaanu 5 Naanasaara got a real “Ball Massage” from the Sirikotha.

      20. A.H.M Azwar proved that is a real “Puttalam Buuruwa”.

      21. Sri Lanka lost India’s participation and China compelled to make statement about abusing Human right situation.

      22. Our Emperor paved a way to have a International Investigation about War Crimes and crimes against humanity.

These are what we achieved out of CHOGM other than what our Bodu Bala Salesman mentioned.

        Lapatiya,

I was travelling in Africa and Caribbean when CHOGM was inaugurating, where all these countries listen to BBC TV.

The first thing they asked me was about war atrocities in Sri Lanka. It was widely broadcasted in BBC news along with CHOGM where I witnessed myself.

CHOGM and DC exposed to the world, Sri Lanka’s war atrocities and now everybody know it.

Also I herd that one hotel alone lost 700 million rupees in business (peak tourist season) due to CHOGM and loss in hotel occupancy which are down by 50%.

Also both Local Trade and Businesses lost billions of Trade due to Closures for business.

James Packer is the front runner for Rajapakse Black money Mafia Business. Black money will be deposited in San Marino, the Black money Mecca.

The TAMIL diaspora – not LTTE diaspora – persuaded Cameron to come and get firsthand knowledge of the truth of what is happening in sri lanka.

Sri Lanka got international exposure about the human rights & media freedom situation due to CHOGM.

The reality of the negative effects on the economy are seeping in slowly – cost of living for the ordinary man is becoming unbearable.
Mahinda Rajapakse will try to make use of the next two years as head of the Commonwealth,to ensure his success at the next presidential election.
Who cares about hotels – the common man has never been inside one.
Even top public servants cant afford to stay in one.

‘The Indian PM let his British counterpart do all his dirty-work and stayed at home blaming it on ‘domestic’ problems.’
I think the Indians are smarter than the credit we give them. When they wanted to settle a score with the govt they helped LTTE without getting their hands dirty. When they realized it could be to their advantage to get rid of the LTTE the helped the Govt with no dirt on their hand.
Now the center sees it needs the south as well as SL so it gets the brits to do its dirty work.

    Hats off to MS. :)

    Sharmini,

The LTTE is no more. There is no LTTE rump of any significance anywhere in the world. Please don’t forget that the LTTE was a banned organisation in most of the Western countries. So there cannot simply be an acceptable LTTE rump in those countries now. But of course there is a strong Tamil diaspora and that is an undeniable fact. So, your articles will become more credible if you refer to the Tamil diaspora in future and not to the non-existing LTTE or it’s rump!

    Sengodan. M

      0

      Dear Mr. Sengodan,

I am a simple Sinhala village man. For me and most simple Sinhalese folk like myself there is a BIG difference between Tamil Diaspora and LTTE Diaspora/Rump.

For us, Tamil Diaspora also means Sri Lankan Diaspora. In this category there are Tamils, Sinhalese, Muslims, Burghers etc who are friends and even related to one another.Further the Tamil Diaspora is a peace loving lot and dislike the LTTE and all what it stood for.

However the latter we call the LTTE Diaspora/Rump we regard as terrorists. In this category of ‘Kotiyas’ there are Tamils, Sinhalese (not sure about Muslims and Burghers)but definitely ‘Suddhas’ like Adele Balasingham, Francis Harrison, Callum Macrae etc

So now, how can you expect us Sinhalese to insult you by lumping all of you together as Tamil Diaspora?

        Girigoris,

Your statement that there are Sinhalese and ‘Suddhas’ amongst the LTTE sounds hollow and utterly meaningless to any neutral person outside Sri Lanka This attitude is akin to the proverb that to a scared person, anything dark is a ghost!

So, dear village man, please wake up and face reality boldly!

You have been living in la-la-land for too long to understand the ground situation back home.

I assure you there are plenty of Sinhalayas ‘bought’ by the LTTE. As you may well know some of my people (Sinhalayas) will sell even their mother for a few bucks.

I feel that the writer’s statement “At the expense of the Lankan tax-payer we managed however to provide a free and very expensive platform for the LTTE diaspora to be heard through the Eton- educated gab of none other than the British Prime Minister David Cameron himself” is a little unfair by those who Cameron spoke for.

It is NOT the LTTE diaspora, or even the expatriate Tamils that were in focus, it IS the thousands of civilian Tamils whose only crime was to live in the North and who suffered untold humiliation, terrorism, human indignities, torture and even death, who were in focus.

We as a nation have been blinded by the fact that the LTTE were defeated (and good riddance to them) so much that we have forgotten to be magnanimous to those civilians who remain and who are in pitiful search of justice. It is tragic that this issue is left on the back burner (has been for 4.5 years) and no amount of development or tamashas or hosannas will alleviate their pain until full and fair restitution occurs.

I don’t agree with Cameron’s bombastic style, nor all that he stands for, but I think he did those terribly wronged people of our country a massive favour by internationalising the issue during the CHOGM.

The proper birthday for Prince Charles was celebrated fittingly in
Delhi – before he arrived here on the date he was born. This “Rajapakses Birthday Party for HRH” was a con to deceive the gullible yakkos. It was more for a photo-op for our own un-Royal Family.

As to the Rs.6 billion squandered, it will be recovered increasing the
price of bread, children’s milk-powder, flour, petrol, transport and what not. With the Opposition totally in disarray and Parliament only a rubber-stamp the Rajapakse regime have things their own way – for the moment. The weight of these will be hidden in the many local elections that will be unleashed in the coming months.

    R. Varathan

But the pinch will come from across the seas.

    • 0
      0

      Dear Mr. Varathan,

What is Rs. 6-billion these days? It can be recovered within one year if Sri Lankans stop consuming imported milk/milk powder based products and stop eating sweet local stuff made with imported sugar and wheat flour. The GMOA has been going to town with ill effects of sugar, wheat flour and imported milk powder and in return they got some monthly allowance increased from Rs. 15,000.00 to Rs. 25,000.00. If people want relief they should take GMOA’s advice and help the government to recover the expenditure of Rs. 6-Billion.

Do not forget the political slogan of 1970s “Siri laka de siri sepa de” (Sri Lankan products bring prosperity). During that period farmers in the North reaped rich dividends by producing onions, potatoes, chilies, fruits and vegetables, not for export but for local consumption. The slogan is still valid.

The urban dwellers who earn incomes from the Services Sector do not understand the value of GMOA advice and “Divi Neguma” Programme because they have hardly any time to cook at home. They did not understand it even then and chose the free market economic policies which allowed importing cooked food, fast food, milk food and fruits and anything and everything.

Sharmani, you are trumpeting the same line that Rajapksa regime uses to justify the past and present crimes, erosion of human rights, thuggery and nepotism.

It is very naïve to think that the Government heads of India and UK are in capable of thinking for themselves that they need to get one to do ‘dirty work’ for the other.

For your information Dr. Manmohan Singh has a PhD from Oxford University, and he has studied at Cambridge, Chandighar, Punjab universities and he is a renown economist and the only Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to return to power after completing a full five-year term, and the first Sikh to hold the office.

David Cameron has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from Brasenose College, Oxford. It is not the Eton boy David Cameron, the USA corner shop experienced Gotabaya Rajapaksa who has publicly shown his ‘degrees in thuggery’ by saying publicly he will hand the very General Sarath Fonseka. Do you think people around the world has not seen this interview.? and also other gutter rants by the same man.

Having returned from Sri Lanka this is what David Cameron said at the British Parliament on Monday:

“I do not think that anyone can be in any doubt that they are under more pressure today than they were a week ago, or a month ago, because of the international attention that has been shone on these issues—they know that the world will be watching. One only has to watch President Rajapaksa’s press conference, which was dominated by questions about human rights and inquiries into what happened at the end of the war, to see that there is pressure today that there was not a week ago,”

On the other hand rather than simply indicating that these leaders are acting on behalf of ‘LTTE diaspora’ this alone will serve a base for charges for helping Terrorists organisation as LTTE is banned in many countries as an illegal organisation and anybody having ties to this organisation is committing a crime punishable by law. By the way the first country in the world to ban LTTE was India.

It is none other than Sri Lankan President’s brother who is guilty of violating international law by arranging a false passport to the LTTE butcher Karuna Amman, who was instrumental in recruiting child soldiers, hacking to death Buddhist monks and bombing the Dalada Maligawa. Not only that with the blessing of the President Karuna Amman is a Minister paid for by Sri Lankan taxpayers, including the people who still carries the pain of the crimes committed by Karuna.

Has David Cameron or Manmohan Singh given false passports to terrorist butchers from Sri Lanka? Do they have any Sri Lankan Ealam terrorists in their parliament?

In the name of journalism your comments should be corrected as follows: At the expense of the Lankan tax-payer we managed to remain demented and deaf to provide a free and very expensive platform for the Rajapaksa familial regime to hide behind the curtain of CHOGM to forget Rajapaksa’s is a regime of nepotism, thuggery, lack of the rule of law, violation of human rights and free speech. These facts are not secrets to state leaders including the Oxford- educated British Prime Minister David Cameron.

It is amazing to see how demented, myopic and deaf some in the media has become.

No country can benefit from hosting such big events. Look NAM in 1976 in Colombo, Olympic Games Barcelona, Sydney, Athens,Beijing etc, Commonwealth Games New Delhi ended with huge scam resulting in arrests etc. London has relatively come out without a problem except the main stadium which is still under utilized according to the latest reports. No country can shirk from its responsibilities and commitment big or small, rich or poor, strongman or weakling. You either do it or don’t do it and someone has to do it. It applies to all counties. You may ask did Sri Lanka benefit from co hosting the last Cricket World Cup? We got stadiums at the cost of Sri Lanka Cricket going bankrupt. Anyway some one some where has made some money from the sideline projects.

Wrong and wrong. The author is right that it IS the “LTTE diaspora”. If we are to believe otherwise, show us any criticism of the LTTE from any of the diaspora representatives who went to meet Cameron (Suren / Emanuel / Senthil). Tell us any criticism you yourself have of the LTTE.

And they tried to persuade him to boycott. They worked very hard at a boycott and failed.

Sinhalese are the sole race who faught against Colonial masters while Tamils lick British asses for more previleges than the majority…Cameron didnt meet who were hit by LTTE or Sinhala agents..His sole agenda was to energise big headed Tamils…Time will come to investgates Bristh war crimes and Indian war crimes..Let the time..

      Sooriya,

Don’t let the TNA full suit guys have all the credit. Most of our sinhala boys also wore ‘pull-soot’ at chogm and Nonis hamu wore a nice ‘pull three piece soot’ and spook like a true brown sahib. They looked very funny in full suit and wives in saree (we couldn’t make out who was in fancy dress). When/If you go abroad, look out for our sinhalese too; all wearing full suit and sucking up to foreigners for jobs and benefits and yes sir no sir three bags full sir and then they come back here and act like they are kalu suddhas and when going back they say ‘uppi yanta yanawa’ ‘cheerio dahling’ and all. Actually, we should have left the commonwealth a long long time ago but our sinhala brown sahibs love to have their picture taken with the old colonial master. Even our great liberators Gotcha and Pondseka like to keep house and family in white mans country. MR also like to have son educated overseas like lots of other sinhalese including our officers who made good money during the war and was able to send children overseas for education and families too. What to do?

I myself have met those pukasuddas (kalusuddas) many a times in london. Dont you feel that there are also this kind of people in Cmbo itself? GOing back to my days in SL – 3 decades ago, I happened to get on with CMBO lankens that behaved as if they are NON-srilankens. This has been part of COLOMBO CULTURE. They are brought up in that way from generation to other. I believe this is common to both SINHALA and TAMILS But I really dont think that many living on the west would behave in that way. The reason for london living lankens could be that many of the their families are cornered there running getto lives similar to pakis or indians. This is the case with the turkish communities living in non-English speaking countries like Germany,France, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands.

In addition to their Dollar value, these Gun Boats are a good deterrent for any plans of the LTTE Rump. PM Rudra , Vaiko and Neduravan to resurrect Praba’s old Sea Tiger outfit dressed up as Nadu Fishermen.

Jayalalitha wouldn’t let Manmohan to have a little break in our sunny Lanka for a couple of days , because it is against the wishes of the Diaspora.

Just imagine what Jayalalitha and Karu would do if the Indian Gun Boats try to stop the Diaspora funded Nadu Tiger Boats?.

Even the joints in Ms Serasinghe’s old turf. like the UBR where the Galle Intelligentsia used to go for a Sea Bath and a cheap all you can eat Smogasbord is booked out even at 160 Bucks per night.

    And no Breakfast mind you.

When these loyals now turn against Ms Samarasinghe for calling the Diaspora LTTE Rump. I feel sorry for her as a fellow Southerner.

Sharmini,as an experianced journalist you must show maturity. There are thousands of peace loving Tamils among diaspora and I have personally met them.I knew a Tamil lady who only uses Sri Lankan to travel to Colombo. By calling them ” LTTE diaspora” you are creating problems in their mindset and it would not help on the reconciliation. We have to decide whether we are going to be polarised for ever attacking each other or coming to a common platform admitting each others atrocities.Unless we take a pragmatic approach like that, this problem will be gifted to our next generation also.

      Priyanjith ,

don’t take it so seriously , she was catering for the local consumption , and don’t forget she still lives in SL!

      Priyanjith,

Why do you Tamils jump to the conclusion that any reference to the LTTE diaspora is an insult to the Tamil diaspora?

It is very obvious that the writer has been very careful and selective in using the terms “LTTE diaspora” and “LTTE rump” and NOT Tamil diaspora and Tamil rump for obvious reasons.

      Priyanjith,

You appear to be very naive.

The peace loving Tamil diaspora know the difference between ‘LTTE Diaspora’ and ‘Tamil Diaspora’ even if you don’t.

So please don’t embarrass yourself by getting involved in a subject way out of your depth.

Well written article as a matter of fact the LTTE has made the Sri Lankan govt to wash it’s dirt linen in Public I must say thank u to me it was Divine intervention .
You can play2 with the ordinary citizens BUT you cannot do that with the students & Media & here the media has done that damage which will take sometime to unwind.
Let me Quote a Famous saying from Mr Lee Kuan Yew the 1st Prime Minister of Singapore who turned this small island of 225 sq miles into one of the richest nations of the world, so much so, America borrows money from it’s investment arm called Termasek Holdings.
T he Alphabet J has produced the most number of brilliant people in the world today & without them we the human race could not have advanced that far & incidentally the J— IS JEWS,JAPANESE,JAFFNA TAMILS.Have a nice day please tell your PM he can try whatever means to erase the Jaffna Tamils from the face of the earth ,& i BET U HE WILL BECOME MORE & MORE A BIGGER FAILURE.Engage in them like what Mr Lee did & see where Singapore is today and where is Sri Lanka today, the ball is in your court we the Jaffna Tamils will shine wherever we are see how we made the British PM to do the dirty job for us .Hitler tried & he lost so please u also do not try for u also will lose.

Everyone is grudging the enormous cost of the CHOGM and wanting to do a cost-benefit analysis of the event. Why isnt it that when Bathalawathy showcased the Non-Aligned Conference nobody dared criticize the enormous costs to a country mired in poverty to the extent that its people were forced to eat manioc and bathala and restrict rice meals to 3 per week? Not that I support this CHOGM extravaganza but I simply cannot understand the logic of todays arguments. Perhaps Sharmini can explain.

      Hakeem,

You are a disgrace to the entire Muslim community- calling the grand old lady who happens to be the world’s first woman PM as “Bathalawathy”

Be careful, you might have the BBS doing the unthinkable to you.

Ironically, you have the username of the Minister of Justice. He is said to open his mouth for his 3 meals – dead silent and spineless by all nature, regardless of whatever crimes are the case, in the country today – where NO justice is given to any crimes to this date.
I have very much respect towards Tamil leaders but not any of the muslim representatives that proved to be spineless – best example has been your Azwer. So better ot see not disgracing the FIRST LADY PRIMER MINISTER to the world in this way. MrS B^s foreign relations benefited the country for the last 4 decades. Indo-CHINA war and the related issues handled by her would not be forgotten by anyone. If you would disagree then you should either be psychophant or not normal. Masses incl. tamil folks still believe if local products were given its due place, our economy would have grown up to healthy levels. However, the open economic policies that have been implemented without any amds/filters to the lanken systems have not improved its economy that much.

        Apologies..

Hakeem is reported to open his mouth only when eating his meals…
Nothing else in his portfolios seem to be his responsibilities.

Very Interesting conversations, however I believe what Shamini is suggesting is not true. Before the CHOGAM event I took two Korean businessmen from Katunayake to Colombo. One of them said, ” Your country is making a big development everytime I come.”

I think most of the foreign dignitaries would have felt the same when they came to Sri Lanka this time. It is a fact that Mahindas gov is having a lack of human rights track record. However they are making a huge infrastructure developments everywhere in the country. And two third of the parliament are on their side and as a result have paved the way for political stability which is an attractive feature for BOI projects.

For every mega event of this nature, every gov has to spend money. They go for everything including city developments. When Olympics took place in England, they too spend a lot of tax payers money and they see that as a investment.I think to a certain extent the same happened here.

If you have visited Colombo and Hambanthota recently, anyone can see how beautiful these cities have become. Like Murali stated everyone is making an effort to rebuild Sri Lanka.

I think most of the Tamil writers here, have not visited Sri Lanka recently and simply making miscalculations and misconceptions due to their past experience and some may want to strengthen their plight to apply for asylum.

You guys will not have any future as your cultures are being absorbed by whites in the future. The fore try to understand and make Murali your role model. Both Sinhalese and Tamils all have suffered enough.

You guys may never see the truth as you cannot experience it in your hearts.

We have already seen how Cameron made a big blunder and how he is criticised by Guardian, Times and other newspapers.

I think this event was a fantastic opportunity for Sri Lanka. Businessmen from all over the world attended here numbering 1200. For those who do not know: not only the CHOGAM countries took part in the business forum countries like China and Korea to mention a few too took part in the forum.

Hail my motherland, Rajapaksa may vanish but the future of Sri Lanka is looking bright. Either you LTTE supporters like it or not, We will rise as a nation, your children may visit here as tourists one day.

    God Bless Sri Lanka.

      G S C Silva,

What a bloody racist you are and a stupid one at that (I guess all racists are stupid).

You are obviously a businessman with not much education NOR wisdom.

If you think Rajapaksa’s “new clothes viz spanking new infrastructure, spotless city etc.” as the author calls it is DEVELOPMENT, then you need to educate yourself on what ‘development’ really means.

What ‘development’ is there in a country where democracy, human rights and rule of law have no place?
