By Sharmini Serasinghe –
It appears that our Emperor’s attempts to show-off his new clothes viz spanking new infrastructure, spotless city etc., to the world through CHOGM went seriously wrong!
At the expense of the Lankan tax-payer we managed however to provide a free and very expensive platform for the LTTE diaspora to be heard through the Eton– educated gab of none other than the British Prime Minister David Cameron himself. He made no bones about why he was coming to Sri Lanka and what he was going to do here and he did it!
The Indian PM let his British counterpart do all his dirty-work and stayed at home blaming it on ‘domestic’ problems.
The LTTE rump managed to get Sri Lanka to foot the bill for a hugely successful international media blitz held on our own soil to espouse their cause.
Prince Charles had a nice Birthday party!
Other CHOGM invitees had an all-expense-paid holiday in sunny Sri Lanka and went home.
All’s well that ends well, but what did Sri Lanka get out of hosting this carnival?
Besides egg on our faces, we got as ‘gifts’ two old boats from Australia which might otherwise have ended up in a scrap yard, with two caveats attached – they are to be used for preventing any prospective Sri Lankan asylum seekers making a nuisance of themselves in Australia and the Sri Lankan tax-payer must foot the bill for the “rebuilding” of these ‘gifted’ old boats!
And of course we and our future generations were landed with a LOT of bills amounting to over a staggering Rs. 6 billion which we the tax-payers must pay over many years to come!
That’s about it, as far as what Sri Lanka got from hosting this mega carnival!
What Sri Lanka didn’t get from this event is a long list of negatives that may go on forever.
To start with, according to local media reports city hotel occupancy levels were far below expectations. The originally expected occupancy of 4,000 city hotel rooms was never realised with only 50% of that at approximately 2100 rooms being actually occupied during the event.
Reports further state that if not for CHOGM, the average occupancy rates of city hotels at this time of the year would have been around 75% to 80% percent. One leading hotelier reportedly claims that his hotel lost “a good Rs.80 million of business due to CHOGM”. And that is only the reported loss of one hotel. What about the others that carried out massive refurbishment of their properties in time for CHOGM?
Almost all of Colombo’s schools were closed for two weeks and Universities Island– wide also closed for one week disrupting education.
The massive economic losses incurred by business enterprises, due to disruption caused by road closures and restriction on vehicular traffic is mind boggling.
I hope an honest cost benefit evaluation will be carried out to assess if the benefits of hosting this ‘show’ outweigh the cost or vice versa.
The only positive indicator so far is that Sri Lanka’s business community was pleased with the exposure the country received as a prospective destination for trade, investment and tourism. However it is still too early to predict how successful the much touted Commonwealth Business Forum (CBF) was, as impressive numbers of foreign participants is not an indicator of its success.
In a new world-order where trade is more important than politics, let us hope nevertheless, that some measure of success was derived through visiting business leaders and entrepreneurs linking up with one another and that it would ultimately transform into investment agreements benefiting the country.
At least then we would stand to benefit from this otherwise useless exercise called CHOGM!

Hi Sharmini,
I have few questions to you?
Are you a Sri Lankan?
Do you think SriLanka only belongs to Sinhala Buddhists?
Do you accept that the massacre of Tamils in 1958, 1962, 1977, 1983 are legitimate right of the Sinhalese?
Can you explain the dirty things Indian PM and British PM did?
Do you consider abduction and murder of your son by a State is good think?
Do you think impartial investigation of Lasantha murder is dirty think/
Do you think raping your sister by a military personal is good think?
Be human rather than a racist !

Do you think you are having a telephone conversation with the writer?
Or why pose questions on a comment thread such as this, where writers of standing don’t comment on their own threads.
You are obviously not educated enough to realise that!

Dear Goofy,
I would like to clarify few things. My name is not a Sinhala name. I am a Tamil and my name is in Tamil. The questions are addressed to the writer of this article, not for you. I am sure you are not Sharmini. Lot of writers in this web respond to comments. If you have doubt, please contact CT to clarify this.
Did you understand my questions? Why can’t you answer those questions if you are educated enough to understand the questions? Don’t speak like Gota.
/
Goofy / November 22, 2013
Dear Ajith/Ajit,
You seem to be having a serious problem with spelling your name.
Ajith is a Sinhala name while Ajit (without ‘h’) is a Tamil name. Please check with your parents. You might need to do a lot of adjusting in your birth certificate and other important documents and correct the spelling of your name.
So, how can one expect a man who doesn’t know how to spell his own name to understand what is written in this article?
Though it’s none of my business, your questions have no relevance to this article.

Dear Tamil Diaspora,
I am a simple Sinhala village man. For me and most simple Sinhalese folk like myself there is a BIG difference between Tamil Diaspora and LTTE Diaspora/Rump.
For us, Tamil Diaspora also means Sri Lankan Diaspora. In this category there are Tamils, Sinhalese, Muslims, Burghers etc who are friends and even related to one another.Further the Tamil Diaspora is a peace loving lot and dislike the LTTE and all what it stood for.
However the latter we call the LTTE Diaspora/Rump we regard as terrorists. In this category of ‘Kotiyas’ there are Tamils, Sinhalese (not sure about Muslims and Burghers)but definitely ‘Suddhas’ like Adele Balasingham, Francis Harrison, Callum Macrae etc
So now, how can you expect us Sinhalese to insult you by lumping all of you together as Tamil Diaspora?
/
kalaveddha / November 21, 2013
You are absolutely correct Mr. Girigoris.
For us Sinhalese, the Tamil Diaspora and LTTE Diaspora are poles apart!
Perhaps now the LTTE rump wants to hide behind the peace loving Tamil Diaspora and masquerade as one of them.
Tamil Diaspora dears, kick those bloody LTTE buggers from your midst and send them back to Sri Lanka. They can help with the ongoing de-mining operations in the North.
/
Ajith / November 21, 2013
Girigoris,
Tamil Diaspora supports Tamils and Sinhalese right for self-determination, voices against human right violations and rule of law and justice for all. We call those who responsible war crimes, crimes against humanity, and rape against women are terrorists and criminals. We believe SriLanka ruling regime and military come under this category. I don’t know about Sinhala Diaspora. If they are true Srilankans they should have the same believe.

Rajapakse’s ulterior motive behind CHOGM is to give their boot lickers to make money and a PR stunt for Rajapakses.
How could you allocate 980 million rupees for 1,000 journalists as meals for three days…..BUT PROVIDED ONLY A ROLL AND A CUTLET FOR BREAKFAST.
Please read the following web.
http://www.lankaenews.com/English/news.php?id=13940
Colombo CHOGM 2013 creating ignominious record : least members attended summit in history
(Lanka-e-News-16.Nov.2013, 11.00PM) The much hyped Commonwealth heads of governments conference (CHOGM) 2013 began yesterday(15) morning in Colombo but not before creating an ignominious record as the CHOGM with the least number of participating heads of governments , in its history. Though the foreign Ministry revealed yesterday evening that 23 government heads were to arrive , by this morning , 21 only of the 53 scheduled commonwealth heads came for the CHOGM thereby creating a record as the CHOGM that was attended by least number of heads of governments in its entire history – a poor reflection on the lawless Rajapakse regime hosting it. The number of heads of governments who participated in the previous CHOGMs are as follows :
2011 in Perth – 36 heads of governments
2009 in Trinidad – 34 heads of governments
2007 in Uganda – 36 heads of governments
2005 in Malta – 38 heads of governments
2003 in Nigeria – 38 heads of governments
1999 in Durban Africa – 47 heads of governments
1997 in Scotland – 42 heads of governments
Meanwhile a sum of Rs. 1700 million was distributed earlier itself among the print media, broadcasting and television channels across Sri Lanka to publicize that the CHOGM is a roaring success by the pro Rajapakse media. Hence these pro government media coolies have turned blind to the flops and failures , and are not making any adverse reports . All these coolie media Heads are deaf and dumb after their pockets ,pot bellies and foul smelling mendacious mouths have been filled to the brim with CHOGM lump-sums .
In addition , it has been assessed that 1000 local and foreign journalists are to participate in this CHOGM , and towards them a sum of Rs.980 million has been set aside towards their expenditure. It is media secretary Charitha Hearth alias ‘Heeralu’ Herath and shaggy hog media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella who are in charge of this sphere .
The photograph herein shows the sparse breakfast that was served to the media personnel who were loitering about the venue from early morning 5.00., after Heeralu Herath and bearded Keheliya getting together and spending Rs.980 million – only a roll and a cutlet were served to the journalists.
The contract to provide food had been entrusted to Testa Bakehouse , Avissawella .This same Bakery is providing meals to about 18000 security personnel throughout the period of the conference .
Let us see how ‘Heeralu’ Herath who abandoned robes and bearded Keheliya ‘kalliya’ teamed together and took everyone for a ride in this colossal food supply scam.
the sum set aside towards 1000 media personnel was Rs. 980 ,000,000 ! That is Rs. 980000 per journalist. If the conference is to last for 10 days , the sum spent per day is Rs. 98000 towards each journalist for their meals.
In other words , ‘Heeralu’ Herath and (bearded ) ‘Rewula’ Keheliya ‘gahapu heti’(swindling duo) is very obvious based on their spending Rs. 98000 (nearly a lakh) per journalist vis a vis the sparse breakfast table ( roll and cutlet) as depicted in the photograph.
This is only one incident…..how about many other crooked mega commission scandals played behind CHOGM. Remember Tsunami Jackpot.
This is another mega Tsunami steel Jackpot.
Trying to promote Rajapakse Mega Image stunt with Cutouts all over Colombo Backfired and spoiled by CH 4 Callum Macrae and PM Tony Blair.

Pushpa / November 22, 2013
On the above Tamil Diaspora/LTTE Diaspora confusion…………
My name is Pushpanayagam and I hail from Jaffna. During the riots of 1983 none of my family nor relatives were harmed in any way, thanks to several Sinhalese friends who protected us. Our properties too were not damaged. I guess we were the lucky few. I was in my early twenties then.
When Tamils in large numbers started leaving SL, all my Tamil buddies (even a few Sinhalese posing off as Tamils) decided to make use of the golden opportunity of going abroad to seek greener pastures. We arrived in Germany where we were initially welcomed with open arms (I now live in Canada). We were not refugees fleeing our home country in fear of our lives but ‘economic refugees’ like thousands of others.
Most of the Tamil diaspora comprises people like me with no truck with the LTTE. Yes we were forced to contribute financially to the LTTE because we feared for the lives of our loved ones back home and NOT because we believed in their cause.
We the Tamil diaspora unlike the LTTE diaspora don’t want our country divided although we are now citizens of foreign countries.
The writer is absolutely correct in making a clear distinction between the Tamil diaspora (us) and the LTTE rump (others).
While we are deeply upset about the allegations of human rights abuses in SL, we the Tamil Diaspora believe that this is an issue confronting ALL Sri Lankans and not just the Tamils. During the final stages of the war, did anyone check the ethnicity of the dead to find out if there were any Sinhalese and Muslims among them as well? How can one be so sure they were all Tamils?
Also, human rights abuses go far beyond the boundaries of the final stages of the war in SL. What about the disappearances and murders of journalists and others irrespective of their ethnicity? Are these not human rights violations? What about attacks on Muslims and places of religious worship? Are these not human rights violations?
David Cameron made a public fool of himself by playing right into the hands of the LTTE rump!
There are several people on this comment thread (LTTE sympathizers) wanting to be identified with us the peaceful Tamils as “Tamil diaspora”. Please don’t fall for this psychological game!
I reiterate that the Tamil Diaspora and the LTTE Diaspora or Rump are NOT one and the same!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Tamils. During the final stages of the war, did anyone check the ethnicity of the dead to find out if there were any Sinhalese and Muslims among them as well?”
This is a valid question. Hence needs an independent investigation into all war crimes and violations of human rights committed by all parties to the conflict going back to 5th April 1971.
“David Cameron made a public fool of himself by playing right into the hands of the LTTE rump!”
And the Sri Lankan state has been preparing the ground for the game to be played in the open.

Sharmini (and all other commentors),
If this is what is called “good journalism” then I don’t want to know what bad journalism is.
Why does everything need to be related to in an ethnic sense? It’s been a few years since the war ended and if at least those of us that live on Lankan soil cannot move forward and let wounds heal (especially for those who were directly affected by it) and instead keep bringing up every so called issue in an ethnic sense, is this country of our ours ever going to heal completely?
If you want to make every thing an issue and talk about it, refer to it as a National issue or a Sri Lankan issue…. not as a tamil, muslim, burgher, sinhala issue. The President himself said in his speech after the war that there are no sinhalese, tamils, muslims or burghers in this Nation…. ONLY Sri Lankans.
Why does everyone always have to be so critical and negative about everything that the Govt. does? I can’t remember anything good about any Govt being said by our so called Lankans. Why is that? And yet they claim to be patriotic.
Is it so difficult to be positive minded and focus on the good things that the Govt is doing? I for one have not seen any other Govt that has done, in terms of development, as much as this Govt has.
Start “speaking” the future that you want to see and you will eventually see it. Keep harping about so called ethnic differences and criticizing everything that the President and the Govt. does and you will never ever see this country joining the ranks of the developed world.
By the way.. I am from what other lankans consider an ethnic minority. Yet, I am PROUD to be Sri Lankan, proud of my “what you call ethnicity”, proud of the Govt and proud to have a President like M.R and I bless him with many more years in his seat to transform this country into the wonder of Asia.
The past is in the past, none of us can change it. Can we at least learn from it, be forgiving and allow healing to take place where needed, so that we can together transform this beautiful island Nation?
Change your mindset and move on people.

I agree with your post mortem but with some amendments:
1)At the expense of the Lankan tax-payer we managed however to provide a free and very expensive platform for the LTTE diaspora to be heard through the Eton- educated gab of none other than the British Prime Minister David Cameron himself. He made no bones about why he was coming to Sri Lanka and what he was going to do here and he did it!
*** The above is a true account and this is exactly what Prabakaran did when he helped MR to come to power in other words self destruction.
3)The Indian PM let his British counterpart do all his dirty-work and stayed at home blaming it on ‘domestic’ problems.
*** The above is not correct as what the British PM did was not dirty work but present the case for the Prosecution Service to the Indictment Proceedings. His Indian Counterpart is not capable of putting the case as effectively and forcefully as Mr.Cameron did.
3)The LTTE rump managed to get Sri Lanka to foot the bill for a hugely successful international media blitz held on our own soil to espouse their cause.
*** For your information LTTE Caders may have gone but the Message and Agenda is still alive and that is the engine which is driving the whole process.
4)Prince Charles had a nice Birthday party!
*** Prince is past sell by date
5)Other CHOGM invitees had an all-expense-paid holiday in sunny Sri Lanka and went home.
*** Only 21 turned up and many Africans bowed down to King Mahintha
All’s well that ends well, but what did Sri Lanka get out of hosting this carnival?
