I then decided that given the fact that he would take action on the matter and ensure there was no loss in revenue to SriLankan Airlines, I would not carry the story. I however telephoned Mr. Rajapaksa again to tell him that my decision was based purely on him promising to take action and not because he blatantly threatened me the previous day and used foul language.

In politics there are no permanent friends or permanent foes. It is theatrics. Politicians of every shade have their fun, real fun. It is coincidental that politics before we became a republic in 1972 is reputed to be cleaner and more straight forward. It is said that late Mr. Dudley Senanayake had only Rs. 400/= in his bank account when he died. Bandaranailkes lost their wealth in doing politics. Dr. Dahanayake used attend Parliament sittings travelling by train. So was Mr. Prins Gunasekara. Law was enforced to the letter. The highly influential had pay the ultimate penalty for murder, mind you on a complaint made by a woman in a remote town to the then IGP.
It looks that the whole lot of us are taken for a ride when politicians fight in public, even making allegations against each other. But they are friends in private. They all have nefarious connections. One wonders for what purpose the people want to grab political power. Fatten themselves? No question. But the seats reserved for others to be super rich is few and those who demand the opportunity are more. It is the dire need to satiate their supporters that they want power. If not, they will loose the supporters and then loose the seat. Who wants that?

Ben Hurling: You raised so many questions in you comment. Here is my answer in a simple story. In my village every year the Buddhist temple holds a “Perahera” (Procession) comprised of all types of dancing troops and other devotees walking in a line up. The dancing that go last is a thing called “MOGODI SELLAMA” where two persons dressed in a “Tiger Costume” fight ferociously to kill each other. Then there drummers who encourage the fight walking behind them. This procession walks about 3 km and it talks more than 3 to 4 hours. All along the road these two jump at each other to “KILL” one another and the people gathered along the road wait till that killing occurs. But to everyone’s surprise this fighting goes till the procession ends at the Temple where it began. After that the two persons dressed as “Tigers” wash the paintings and discard the dresses and “ENJOY” a good drink of “Arrack” or “Kasippu” and go home to meet once again to meet at the NEXT ANNUAL procession. Isn’t this same “MAGODI SELLAMA” that is being played by these politicians and their henchmen? The above picture speaks for itself.
