Where Will It All End?

By Emil van der Poorten

Emil van der Poorten

As if Easter Sunday 2019 wasn’t bad enough, we had a response that was stereotypical of the JR Jayewardene era where the racist hounds of hell were unleashed on a segment of the population whose only crime was that they belonged to the same community as a handful of terrorists.

“Yankee Dick” was responsible for a massive relocation of Sri Lankan Tamils to such places as Canada, the US and the antipodes where they have contributed to those parts of the world far out of proportion to their numbers.

Before I deal with the recent fate of the Sri Lankan Muslim community let me reiterate, perhaps repeat, recent history.

When the Jihadist fringe was giving evidence of preparation for the kind of fundamentalist mayhem for which they are now only too well recognized, many orthodox members of the Islamic faith, prominent and respected members of that community, pleaded with members of this Yahapalanaya government to take appropriate action before it was too late. To no avail, despite those appeals, more often than not, being directed to those of the Islamic faith in the current ruling coalition who would have had the clearest understanding of the differentiation made by their co-religionists. Tragically, this is yet another instance of formal religious affiliations having very little to do with the practice of that faith.

Even though it might now seem as too little too late, the gravity of the decision by the mainline Muslim community not to accord the Jihadists a Muslim burial must be appreciated. After the Easter Sunday atrocity, the mainline Muslim community put action into words and visited upon the heretics the ultimate in rejection: not according the suicide bombers an Islamic burial. There is no denying the sincerity and gravity of this action.

And what of our Yahapalanaya lot? When the looters cut loose on, inevitably, those members of the Muslim community least able to defend themselves inclusive of members of a sect that had been provided sanctuary by Sri Lanka from the persecution of the very types responsible for the Easter Sunday massacre, our President reportedly sought some means of sending them away from Sri Lanka: this from a man who is only too ready to talk about our homeland being the final refuge of all that is good and great in Theravada Buddhism!

To say, “A pox on all your houses,” would be totally inadequate in the circumstances. People guilty of practicing this kind of hypocrisy and its terrible outcomes deserve something more appropriate in the way of punishment.

According to widely-circulated video, one of the major figures in Sirisena’s hodge-podge of Parliamentarians, had sought to have freed those taken into custody for looting and worse very recently. The general public expectation here is that if that stooge doesn’t succeed in having the criminals released, our President himself or one of the dozens of henchmen on tour in the Far East with him will be delegated to issue instructions, long distance, to the police that those taken into custody are to be restored to the bosoms of their families without delay.

This is the kind of country we are compelled to live in.

Is there nothing that can be done to rid ourselves of the Sirisena pestilence?

When the New Son Prince was vandalising Colombo, with the Movie taking called “Brawl in Night Club, Clique” Janathipathi Wappa ordered Jayam from Thailand to cover up the matter. Now Jayam is fired for April 21st Movie “Triple Lightning on Easter Morning” , Janathipathi Wappa is the producer of which.

“Is there nothing that can be done to rid ourselves of the Sirisena pestilence?” Why only Sirisena? Why NOT the entire 225 of that Diyawannawa Maha Gedera.? Every Dark Cloud has a silver lining. True to itself, there is a growing concern and a CRY ( yet under ashes) to get rid of all these vagabonds occupying that “Maha Gedera” and look for a brand new brigade who can put things right for this country and the people. I am glad, there was at least one young Buddhist Priest who had some courage and strength to tell the TRUTH of the present day situation and point a “Direct Finger” at the “Dignitaries”( Speaker , Ministers, Parliamentarians & other top rung officials) seated in the front seats at BMICH. Unfortunately, both the President and the PM were not present; but he (the priest) named them and delivered a very truthful and a factual account of their failures. I believe, all of them got “Earful” and this TREND must be developed and continued. His full speech is now on FB. Please listen to it. This country needs to go for a complete change for which this present brigade must be disbanded and a new set of young, fair thinking, honourable people must be elected to hand over Governance. That is the ONLY WAY to get rid of this pestilence.

Emil, sorry to say Lankans have proved Trump and Suranimala are absolutely right. Our brain dead
but cunning modayas have turned Lanka, into A “SHIT HOLE ” country. My 90 year old mom has eventually resigned to the fact of “doom and gloom”. I am half of her age and have no hope , my grown up children have no plans of even visiting, leave alone settling. That is three generations of despair and lost hope. We as a nation had already passed the point of no return and this will be final nail in the coffin.

Sad to read this. Thank you for keeping us emigres update. Make no mistake, these vile acts must be condemned by all just like the terrorist jihadi ISIS acts. These arw despicable acts and shows tge completely breakdown of law and order. If these thugs were tear gassed, or has rubber bullets fired ir if even that didn’t stop them, shot, this would have ended. Culture of IMPUNITY is why this is happening . In 1956 Sir Oliver had to take charge and order troops out because the weak vacillating PM SWRD couldn’t handle decision making. I am terribly sorry for my family and friends and every who out of patriotism, chose to live through war and bombs, only to be dragged back another 25 years. These vermin plays right into the hands of the ISIS types, just like 1983 did for the LTTE

How can there be unity when Sri Lankan’s can’t communicate with each other ?
When the Brits left, less than 5 % of the population spoke English. While 80% spoke Sinhala. The logical choice was to convert the 20% rather than the 95 % . Today 90 % of Tamils and Muslims can’t speak Sinhala. About 70 of Sinhalese can’t speak English and 99% can’t speak Tamil.
If you read Colombo telegraph and Tamil Net, and watch Ada Derana- it feels like three different countries.

    • 5
      3

Nonsense even now with all the killing and ethnic cleansing of Tamils the percentage of Sinhalese is 74%. When the British left the Sinhalese were 67% . Tamils 26% and Moors. 6% and others 1% . Hardly any of the Tamils and Moors spoke Sinhalese . They spoke Tamil only and a few Tamil and English. So how did you get your 80% Sinhalee speakers ? From your extremist hat. Basically 2/3 spoke Sinhalese 1/3 spoke Tamil . This means both languages should have been made official and languages , not just Sinhalese only and English the link language . All three languages taught at all schools. Instead opportunistic narrow, mean small minded Sinhalese politicians aided and abetted by opportunistic selfish Muslim politicians , with the help of a few Tamil quisling politicians created all this chaos.

    Hi Emil.
    thanks for the article.
In my days in SL, 3 decades ago, I had never seen a monk sitting on a motor bike rear seat. Today, there are enough ways of travelling from A to B, but those monks to behave the very same manner like buddhist laity, gives me feeling that there is no such difference between them today. That says almsot everything about the societal deterioration levels.
Today it is obvious, that the monks abuse their monkhood, cheating the buddhist adhrents. Why cant they be away from active politics. If they really want to do so, then please not abusing the monkhood, they should better enter the buddhist laity.
Last time visiting Kelaniy temple, a year ago, I felt myself that today they the young monks have no shame but stay flirting in the temple premises.

      Simon De Silva,
“I had never seen a monk sitting on a motor bike rear seat.”
In Sri Lanka, it may not be a common thing, but if you go to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam it is a common thing. If a monk wants to go from Point A to B, does the mode used matter?
      —-
“Why cant they be away from active politics.”
Is it only Buddhist monks active in politics? Go to Youtube and check how Vatican is active in politics. If you want to find out how Church of England gets involved in politics go to:
      https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-politics-30796384/church-of-england-role-on-uk-political-issues

It is an open secret that some Christian clergy supported LTTE which is a terrorist organization. Did anyone condemn that?

Your thoughts and minds are not normal – that is known to us from the day one. That is not pathological but racial from that day on. So none of these would help us further. I think those young monks, being wrapped around by SANGA CONSTUMES behave no different to the buddhist laity.
Why should be that violent, so long they wear the costume ? THat is my question. I think these men should just be mentally ill not wanting to work for their living. In sinhala we call them ” pingutharayas”.
Just imagine each time visting th ecountry, I get hurt not being able to tolerate these men. I am born to a buddhist family but I dont respect any Sangayas that behave violently.
        .
I ve been to THAILAND AND SEVERAL NEIBHROING countries, but the buddhism they ve been practising are totall different that of ours. You guys would even allow our MONKS to hire the prostitutes in next days….there you will surely question, if THAI could, why not our monks ?
        It is an open secret,
that RAJATHUMA et al openly supported MUSLIM EXTREMISTS some 8 years ago in the country. THey just sowed the seeds of terrror already then.

Eagle Eye has a valid point. Priests and politicians are both in the business of power and influence – especially at the murky extremes.

Personally, I care for no ‘God’ – I am willing to take my chances in the hereafter. However, those members in our wider family circle who are Buddhists cringe at the outrageous behaviour of a growing number of men in saffron robes. They say “we don’t care about other religious clergy, but it hurts to see our own, those who we look up to for guidance, behaving like this”.

With reference to Kelaniya temple, you got it wrong. It is not only the new monks flirting. The high priest who got SWRD killed had an apartment at the back for his woman. SWRD got killed because on one occasion he refused a contract with the priest. People do not know that SWRD was originally a Christian – I have visited his school in Ratnapura and the kids still talk of him with affection. I do not know or care whether he converted from Christianity or did so to win elections. Now conversion is forbidden in most churches globally. Yet although the Buddha had sermons, it is emperor Asoka who converted the indigenous tribes to Buddhism from China to Nepal.. Why don’t the Buddhist monks address this? I am an anthropologist.

      • 0
        0

        Darshini,

SWRD was born into a Church of England family; his colonial time ancestors converted to Church of England in order to serve the British Colonial masters. Baby Solomon was born during the time of Governor West Ridgeway and his papa Sir Solomon was the governors gatekeeper – that is, ensure that we natives behaved properly and served our colonial masters well. So, when the time came to baptise the young child he was named. . . Solomon West Ridgeway Dias B….hence the SWRD. This was the ultimate suck up!

With the usual influence, young SWRD went to Oxford wearing Oxford Bags and behaving like a proper WOG Charlie. When he returned, he quickly caught the mood of the coming nationalist times and quickly changed into an Arya Sinhala suit, and converted to Buddhism. His trump card was to promise ‘Sinhala in 24 hours’.
Alas, he did the right thing in the wrong way. That was the star of this country’s inexorable slide to eternal damnation.

Terrorists did it. Government pave their way. People lost confidence Akila says they hold exams as schedule It is parents responsibility to send children to school. They are never on our side Problem is Government should have taken action to prevent 250 killings. Now people are afraid to send children to school.Best action for the top leaders are to resign. When there is no faith it would not develop. Only Government could force . Now President is keen on monitoring inter net much more than Zaharan was warranted twice. Yesterday people were crying near courts. A lawyer said some injustice happened. There are very important users in Facebook. I remember president was annoyed people are criticizing him. The main problem is their priorities.

First the Burghers left, then the Tamils, and now the Muslims are leaving. Only the Sinhalese would be left to live in this racked land. Later they would fight among themselves – Govi and Karava, Upcountry and low country etc, and at last finish off the country for good like Somalia or Syria

Let’s see, in the comments Simon is talking mumbo jumbo about monks riding bikes, someone else is worried about a 90 year old lady (bless her heart, may she live to be 100), another guy is mumbling about efficacy of tear gas, and two others are foul mouthing politicians that were elected by the people.

Meanwhile radical Jihadi Moslem terrorists are massing NERVE GAS canisters all over in hideout in the Eastern province to deal a final and annihilating blow to the Lankan Kafir docility of Hindu, Christian and Buddhist masses. Neither the author of the article not the readers are talking anything about preventing that apocalypse. This was the same situation over the past few years. As much as I implored everyone a Moslem attack of unimaginable horror is imminent, everyone including Van der Poorten berated me for me being a crazed. Hundreds would be living today and hundreds would not be debilitated today if someone, at least one person here, who lives in Lanka, reached out to the Lankan minister (I think he is a Cardinal) and told him that a crazy bozo in talking about an imminent attack, and maybe, just maybe, Christians should beware of Moslems fanatics. Would anyone here have the sense to tell the Cardinal that the next Moslems attack may be a nerve gas attack. This is pure logic. Those Lankan fanatics who were in Syria have the knowledge and supply chain to get the nerve gas to Lanka and may have already used them to kill in Syria so well versed in how to handle them.

And the death from nerve gas will make Easter Sunday look like mere crackers. And the death and destruction will be out of the worst hell imaginable.

Nothing to do with the small island of Lanka, although nothing can really compare to it. But at the moment it is a playing field for Jihadi Moslem fanatics because corrupt politicians are in the terrorists pay, directly or through other Moslem ‘moderates”. Its an east, docile, sitting duck type target for the cannibals of terrorist Jihadi Islam.

Jew Chambers spewing anti Muslim venom again. The fanatics who were in Syria are the zionists, Americans, and Saudis, who trained and armed rebels to overthrow yet another Muslim nation. The biggest terrorists are those who drop bombs over these nations killing millions of Muslims, injuring millions, and making them refugees.

Once upon a time the now wretched Sirisena was our great white hope. He promised us an era of Just government, and an end to all the miseries that dogged us post-independence. How wrong we were to expect a jumped-up gamarala to take us to the promised land. This land of much promise still waits with gnashing teeth, for a true leader to deliver us from this ever present pestilence.

Some of our grass eating voters don’t realize that Rajafucksa and cronies are the root cause of evil. This M.Fs master-minded the whole thing and want to come back and EAT the rest of the pie! Mr Poorten.

Will Canada let our Muslim cousins in to Scarborough?

I am relieved that our Sinhala Buddhists in the South whom you guys call Fascists, have listened to our dear Cardinal in Colombo. although the South has the largest number of well off mainly UNP Muslims.
    -.
TNA second Boss , the Gun MP Abraham said ,Muslim Youth attacked the Holy Shrines in Kochikade and elsewhere, because the Yahapalana Government didn’t address their problems.

I thought Ibrahims were one of the Richest families in Dr Ranil’s own Turf.
I saw Dr Ranil’s Gun Minister , young Syjeeva felicitating Ibrahims for their Business Acumen and their great contribution to the Development of the Nation.

So I wonder , Sorry I am bewildered how and where did Abraham get this idea that Dr Ranil didn’t look after the Muslim Youth.

I know Abraham’s own youth are not happy in the North.
Because they do not have Jobs, Their Moms, Sisters, and friends who are War Widows of Mr Pirahaparan have no shelter and doing it tough.
I learned it from that AAVA dude who came on Derana Television.

But I know Abraham is hell bent on getting Dr Ranil’s New Constitution before the Yahapalanaya goes to Extinction.

What do you reckon Mr Poorten.
Will Dr Ranil patch up the marriage with Sirisena and do a Jayawardana?.
And get another 5 years of Yahapalanaya. so we will be in our own Homelands when going to vote at the next Election.?.

Will Bathudeen and Mujibur be in the the Central Government?.
Will Hezbulla and Assath Sally get the the Governors Gig ,
Or will they be Chief Ministers or Premiers in the Provinces?…

BTW can you please tell us the relevant clauses in our Mahavamsa Constitution with regards to Postponing Elections?..

Emil is quite right in highlighting the massive failure of the state apparatus under yahapalanaya govt which they themselves helped to put in place. However Emil is treading very light on the culpability of Muslim politicians within the yahapalana cabal who provided cover to the extremist ideology, obtained massive funding from the Middle East in building 100% mono ethnic Muslim enclaves to create perfect breeding grounds, Arabisation of those parts of Sri Lanka, allowed breaking law and order by providing political cover to the extent of allegedly interfering with Police to release law breakers. Therefore it was no surprise that key members of the terrorist support group were found within the inner circles of Yahapalana Muslim ministers. The cancer was spreading within yet Emil and their ilk prefer to ignore even today by pointing the fingers at someone else (guess who? Buddhists!).

Our smartass patriots oppose America whenever they get the opportunity except this dictum coming from one of the most right wing politician. However the smart ass patriots use them when it suits them.

So it is not mud slinging mate.

Dear Simon, what you have to understand is that this “Yellow robe and priesthood” is a form of employment. I call it a uniform. They come to University, have all free education, screw the girls and then throw their sivru and go away. These guys have no education, only blindly coached like the Islamic fanatics, and let loose and they simply play hell. Even i sometime feel like becoming a clergy and then i have plenty of freedom and opportunities and I can go to heaven through “kama yoga”. A sad country where everything from A to Z have gone wrong. Politics is a joke. Chillie powder throwing democrazy, Gnanasara exposed his well endured genital at a mosque, and now looting patriots of the Dhamma Land? Simon, get one thing clear, and we have gone beyond any form of redemption.

Allow me to let you in on a secret – we have kept close to our chests – that most of my brethren won’t share with you.

I am your average Tamil Diaspora!

In every Tamil diaspora house in Australia, UK, European Union, Canada, USA and wherever else we were driven to out of Sri Lanka, you don’t find a picture of Prabakaran – instead, you have a portrait of J.R Jayawardene!

We have come to the realization, if not for the First President of the Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka, J.R Jayawardene – and his famous speech, “.. “If you want war, let there be war..” that sowed the seeds of division instead of unity between the Sinhala and the Tamil communities, culminating in the 1983 riots that caused a major exodus of Tamils out of Sri Lanka.

So we keep a portrait of JR, the ‘Yankee Dick” in our households and place a sandalwood pottu on his forehead and light a pol-thel pahana daily.

He who showed us there is a better world out there and got us out of the cesspool – deserves that – don’t to agree?

Believe me, the Tamil Diaspora are happy wherever they are away from the misery the peoples have created for themselves, in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Emil van der Poorten –who is the gentleman who said: “people get the government they deserve”?

Yesterday a senior MP of a political party made some very dangerous suggestions on media (on: ade obatte dennang TV).

SO I am.not going to say I told you so, instead I am going to rephrase it as I am telling you today , just forget what I been telling you over a decade.
He wants to screen Muslim kids studying in international Schools locally and also Screen those going for higher studies .
I wonder if anyone understand this term “SCREEN “
Which is even worse than banning.
Only those favoured will go through unlike now any poor kid whose father is even a labourer can get English education and have a hope of going overseas for a decent job instead of as a housemaid’ to the gulf or toilet cleaner.
Or even get tuition.grants and Scholarships overseas.
Just because a bunch of idiots managed to.get a degree or a masters and ended up.as terrorists how can you brand children of an.entire community as Terororists ?
Any idiot can cram.and pass an exam.only those with true wisdom will know how to.use the valuable education they have gained.
I know a lot of idiots with degrees &,masters who.are total idiots from.all communities with all their education are bigots , racists and are up to their neck in superstition .
My advice if you have a way send your kids who are ambitious ,hard working and smart out of the country while you still.have this president ,PM & government &.stop.blaming and demonizing the President ,PM & government in power today , count your blessings you were spared with just one death.
If this President,PM &government ends next year ,its then, not just muslims but most of the people will realise the difference .
Other than God no.one will.be able to reverse it.

Think.wisely. dont wait for surprises in.2020.

Tell me about it ..wait till they get the government they deserve.
But they won’t get where you Tamils are ,because most muslims are a self destructive community full of judgement , they are yet to sort out who are Muslims and not among themselves and there are plenty of Muslims with degree or masters who are upto their neck thinking they are the only true believers while engaging in somuch of superstition and believing just testifying by lips they believe will get them to paradise, its from these superstious lot the sheep is sort to be sacrificed as terrorist.

    @halmen
Why is the cardinal silent when buddist attacked Muslims ?
Because he is not a Buddhist and he is blessed with God’s spirit and wisdom to know to avoid the trap and also he knows it was not done for the love of Christian victims

Ultra nationalism , religious and ideological Extremism is very difficult issue that has to be tackled prudently.

Whole of society should not suffer because of this menace.

The government, religious leaders, political leaders, community leaders , security forces should take this very seriously.

Do adequate research , identify root causes, corporate with each other, and resolve this issue wisely.

Thanks for a very honest comment.
There are still unanswered questions that may take a while to be answered.
But there are urgent issues that you draw attention to that cannot be dodged.

    Emil,

And what of our Yahapalanaya lot? When the looters cut loose on, inevitably, those members of the Muslim community least able to defend themselves inclusive of members of a sect that had been provided sanctuary by Sri Lanka from the persecution of the very types responsible for the Easter Sunday massacre, our President reportedly sought some means of sending them away from Sri Lanka: this from a man who is only too ready to talk about our homeland being the final refuge of all that is good and great in Theravada Buddhism!

*** You are an educated decent ( I hope) individual but I think you are being unfair and Naive to the current government. The root problem is the lack of recognition that there are two different people with a need to have their own means of protecting themelves in a predominantly racist majority and I am sure you admit that the race riots starting from as far back as 1958. confirmed the vulnerabilty of minorities with all the security apparatus in the hands of the majority. . We suffered mob attacks starting from 1958 which the Muslims find themselves in now.
RW”s Government is guilty of protecting War Criminals and I dont aportion blame on RWs Government failing to stop the Mob Attack which I am sure was carried out by Christians as well as opportunist majority. gate crashing. It is no good or not enough to pass laws if you cant implement it on the ground. even with the greatest will in the World. The entire Army and Police are made up of Sinhalese and with hatred in their mind they will simply turn a blind eye to the attack. You cant have Marshall Law as even that has to be enforced by the same forces with prejudice.

The only answer is to have seperate sleeping arrangement and nothing else will suffice. Future is bleak

Guys, it is not so bad. Other countries have gone through worse trials and emerged better for the travails they have gone through. An example is Germany. And then there is Viet Nam. The average time period for being down like this is 2 weeks. This means that we shall be back with our usually bad selves by the end of June at most, unless of course, some body gives an injection to bring back the Frankenstein.

Anarchy: The expansive anarchy of the Internet continues to lull us into believing that, because we can see something, that something should be seen. Because we can say something, there is something that must be said. (Roxane Gay)
