White Van Stories, a documentary on enforced disappearances in Sri Lanka with never-seen-before footage, is set to be featured on Channel 4, UK
Leena Manimekalai, an independent Indian film-maker, is set to feature exclusive material from her documentary feature White Van Stories that highlights enforced disappearances in Sri Lanka.
The documentary will be aired on UK’s Channel 4 in November 2013.
The special 12-minute cut will also be aired in the United States and through CNN and ABC broadcasting networks and in Australia via the multilingual broadcaster – SBS.
The global broadcast coincides with the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo that has been highly criticized in the face of Sri Lanka’s ever-increasing human rights abuse cases.
The cut is based on a 2-hour documentary feature produced and directed by Leena Manimekalai that follows seven characters, covering a gamut of provinces and ethnicities, and the tragic unexplained disappearances of their loved ones in post-war Sri Lanka. The characters will also give audiences a stark glimpse at the characters’ resilience to find the disappeared as part of their continued fight for justice.
“White Van Stories tracks Sri Lanka’s long history of unexplained disappearances in the 1980s during the armed revolt of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna(JVP), and later as the civil war intensified in the 1990s up to recent years,” said Leena Manimekalai. “The lives of the families of the disappeared across Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim ethnicities are portrayed,” she added.
The recent rally held in Jaffna and Colombo on 27th and 30th of August 2013 (International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances) during UNHRC High Commissioner, Ms. Navi Pillay’s visit to Sri Lanka is the centerpiece of the docu-feature as the characters were amongst the hundreds of families of the disappeared who had protested.

The screening of the anti Sri Lankan film called `white vans’ is to coincide with the commencement of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The two hour long film portrays that the Sri Lankan government and the military are abducting people using `white vans`. The film also mentions Prageeth Ekneligoda, introduced as a journalist in the film.
With less than 15 Head of States confirming their attendance in CHOGM & with Indian PM Expected to announce a decision next week, GOAT is flying to Delhi as last ditch effort to invite the Indian PM.
/
Ravi / October 28, 2013
Leena says she was inspired to work on the subject of enforced disappearances when she visited Sri Lanka for a literary festival (41st Ilakkiya Santhippu) in July, and stayed back to travel. The stories she heard of people searching for their loved ones, thousands of whom vanished in the last stage of war in 2009, moved her to make the film.
Her film `white vans` is to be screened in several countries including in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu during the CHOGM. This is the anti- Sri Lanka film after Channel 4`s `No Fire Zone`. C4 exposed how the SL regime gave white van ride to Tamils while hiding under ‘Terrorism’ & ‘Liberation’ of ‘Tamil Hostages’.

Ravi this is the agenda of the corrupt CH4. There will be many more to come before CHOGM , In fact he man who talks Tamil has an uncanny resemblance to Prageeth Ekeneligoda. Is Prageeth Posing as A Tamil in SL . H was Spotted In France by someone too .This is Channel 4s agenda.

For heaven’s sake please don’t make another visit to Sri Lanka.

Whoever you are, .. dont you think.. if you kelagahawoth udabalagen .that comes back on you. So why to criticise the man in this way ? For me, he is not the leader for us if we really want to develop the country, but whom to blame if not to idiotic, stupid, gawky folks.
So long majority folks would stay hell bent nothing would change in the system. Some accuse RW of being weakened, but I really dont think even if WOULD BE REPLACED by Karu, it will take an another decade of longer our people to grasp the sad realities being indifferent to what MR thugs have created / have been creating to the island nation.
DJ or any other would not see this, they are all opportunist by their genetics. Right at the moment, there is no any good journalists in the country to bring a balanced analyses about the grave situ.
In coming days, MR will come to DJ and give him some TOFEES to silence him. Then, idiosyncratic man – DJ would keep quiet as had been until shortly. Besides, DJ s comments are not consistent if one would closely study them. He is lost somewhere in the middle of his style of writing.

Whats wrong with propaganda?
In the meantime outside of your mental state, could you tell us what was the total fees paid to Bell Pottinger and other PR firms, to sanitize war crimes?
What was the percentage of commission and incidental charged on those fees paid to these “Western PR” firms from Tax Payer’s money?

I am sure you will not be happy if I were to use the names of your journos in this manner. Have your forgotten your own guidelines, or do you believe that these comments do indeed comply with the below?
Comments Policy
DISCUSSION GUIDELINES
The Colombo Telegraph provides a opportunity for readers who wish to discuss content we publish, or debate issues more generally. Our aim is to ensure this platform is inclusive and safe.
There are 10 simple guidelines which we expect all participants to abide by, all of which directly inform our approach to moderation (detailed below). These apply across the site, while moderation decisions are also informed by the context in which comments are made. We receive a lot of comments and aim to moderate them all within 24 hours of submission.
1. We welcome debate and dissent, but personal attacks (on authors, other users or any individual), persistent trolling and mindless abuse will not be tolerated. The key to maintaining the website as an inviting space is to focus on intelligent discussion of topics.
2. We acknowledge criticism of the articles we publish, but will not allow persistent misrepresentation of the Colombo Telegraph and our journalists/contributors to be published on our website. For the sake of robust debate, we will distinguish between constructive, focused argument and smear tactics.
3. We understand that people often feel strongly about issues debated on the site, but we will consider removing any content that others might find extremely offensive or threatening. Please respect other people’s views and beliefs and consider your impact on others when making your contribution.
4. We reserve the right to redirect or curtail conversations which descend into flame-wars based on ingrained partisanship or generalisations. We don’t want to stop people discussing topics they are enthusiastic about, but we do ask users to find ways of sharing their views that do not feel divisive, threatening or toxic to others.
5. We will not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia or other forms of hate-speech, or contributions that could be interpreted as such. We recognise the difference between criticising a particular government, organisation, community or belief and attacking people on the basis of their race, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age.
6. We will remove any content that may put us in legal jeopardy, such as potentially libellous or defamatory postings.
7. We will remove any posts that are obviously commercial or otherwise spam-like. Our aim is that this site should provide a space for people to interact with our content and each other, and we actively discourage commercial entities passing themselves off as individuals, in order to post advertising material or links. This may also apply to people or organisations who frequently post propaganda or external links without adding substantively to the quality of the discussion on the website.
8. Keep it relevant. We know that some conversations can be wide-ranging, but if you post something which is unrelated to the original topic (“off-topic”) then it may be removed, in order to keep the thread on track. This also applies to queries or comments about moderation, which should not be posted as comments.
9. Be aware that you may be misunderstood, so try to be clear about what you are saying, and expect that people may understand your contribution differently than you intended. Remember that text isn’t always a great medium for conversation: tone of voice (sarcasm, humour and so on) doesn’t always come across when using words on a screen. You can help to keep the comment section open to all viewpoints by maintaining a reasonable tone, even in unreasonable circumstances.
10. The platform is ours, but the conversation belongs to everybody. We want this to be a welcoming space for intelligent discussion, and we expect participants to help us achieve this by notifying us of potential problems and helping each other to keep conversations inviting and appropriate. If you spot something problematic in comment section, please report it. When we all take responsibility for maintaining an appropriate and constructive environment, the debate itself is improved and everyone benefits.
In short:
– If you act with maturity and consideration for other users, you should have no problems.
– Don’t be unpleasant. Demonstrate and share the intelligence, wisdom and humour we know you possess.
– Take some responsibility for the quality of the conversations in which you’re participating. Help make this an intelligent place for discussion and it will be.

Tiny wars still don’t work
By Tom Engelhardt
In terms of pure projectable power, there’s never been anything like it. Its military has divided the world – the whole planet – into six “commands.” Its fleet, with 11 aircraft carrier battle groups, rules the seas and has done so largely unchallenged for almost seven decades.

Mahinda Rajapaksa: Sri Lanka’s Saviour Or War Criminal
As host of next month’s Commonwealth heads of state meeting, the president’s human rights record is under close scrutiny. For some he’s a robust leader dealing with the bitter legacy of civil war. For others he’s a brutal despot.
Where does Mr. Rajapaksa rank and Sri Lanka rank in the World Ratings?

/
Amarasiri / October 28, 2013
mayhem,
MR is not my hero, but appreciate very much his heroic efforts in finally putting an end to the 30-year LTTE Terrorism, despite the war crimes that happened during that the final phase and during the 30- year war.
Stealing of Tsunami funds, would have been done by any or many politicians who were in power at that time. They are even doing it today in many fronts.
Amarasiri’s issues with MR are:
1. Not bringing together the country after the Separatist war and making the foundation for an Egalitarian Society such as not implementing LLRC.
2. Instead of reconciliation between the communities, and compete in the global economy, effectively, MR is following a Sinhala Buddhist Racist agenda that worked for his father and SWRD Bandaranaike, and many other Sinhala Buddhist racists.
3. No clear separation of Church, Temple , Mosque and State and pandering to the Sinhala Buddhist Monk Criminals and Terrorists like BBS, Booru Balu Sena and other racists.
4. Removal of many checks and balances, independent judiciary, independent police etc. that has made the country a pseudo democracy or pseudo-dictatorship.
So, it is critical for any citizen, point out the out the rights and wrongs.
5. For most Tamils, MR and Sri Lanka State are war criminal.
For most Sinhala, Prabakaran and LTTE are Terrorist and murderers.
There is ample data to support, both allegations, but that was all collateral damage, during their efforts towards getting to their end goals.

Opinions such as this are rarely heard today. Those who gain from division in Sri Lanka often shut such voices out.
Ven. Dambara Amila Thero was a critic of the LTTE during its existence, but now with the LTTE gone, he calls on Sri Lankans to love and respect each others differences and asks us to build a Sri Lankan identity and shows us how we should no longer fall for divisional tactics, used by those who gain from keeping us divided.
He even goes as far as identifying the clause in the Sri Lankan constitution about protecting Buddhism as unnecessary and being put there to do nothing but divide us to keep power.
He also reminds us of the ancient heritage we share with Tamil people reminding us of one of our great kings, the Tamil King Elara.
Ven. Dambara Amila Thero supports religious and ethnic co-existence and comes out strongly against religious and ethnic extremism.
Please note: This video was produced by Young Asia Television and subtitled by groundviews.org. This is re-produced here with the intention of spreading religious and racial harmony in Sri Lanka and calling for moderate views to be spread because moderate views exist and deep down, most people understand these views. Yet we are bombarded by extreme views day in day out, keeping us distracted and pushing us further from achieving peace and harmony. Spread these views. They are important.

“Not necessarily. Buddhist never kill, only Sinhala/Buddhists kill, kill, kill.”
1. Yes, True Buddhists, never kill. Only those Buddhists who follow Mara, and discard Buddhas teaching kill. Example, Sinhala-Buddhists.
2. Sinhala do not kill. Sinhala Christians do not kill the way Sinhala Buddhists kill.
3. BBS, has nothing to do with Buddhism, it has everything to do with Sinhala Buddhist Racism and Sinhala Buddhist Monk Hegemony. That is why there are hardly any Tamil Buddhists and Tamil Buddhist Monks.
http://www.lankanewspapers.com/news/2011/9/70564_space.html
The Kandyan Buddhist clergy – the Siam Nikaya – DENIED ENTRY into the Buddhist monkhood to the non-Govigama. They EXCLUDED THE KARAVE.
4. BBS as self- named and self-appointed as Budu (Buddha) Bala (Force) Sena(Army), and it has nothing to do with the teachings of Buddhism, anywhere in the Tipitaka. So, it has hijacked Buddhism and fooled the Sinhala Buddhists.
That is why Amarasiri refers to BBS as Booru Balu Sena, Donkey(Ass) Dog Force, as it better describes it activities and mission.

Native@,
lately I myself happened to watch a Youtube video of Dambare AMila thero pointing out how the spirit of MR at the beginning had been. This supported me to realized further that India and America were FULLY behind all those annihilations of civil populations at the end of the war. Not MR gangsters won the war, it was war winning of INDIA and USA. Else, there is no reason US to stay silence in terms of WAR crime investigations, while keeping some of the key accused for the war on their soils. I mean Shavendra Silva for example.
Gamini has revealed this several times, but it was not easy to get them all because the covering propaganda of the current brutal regime did allow that. Even today, people (60% of the lanken popu) believe that they are grateful to MR regime ONLY for one reason, that MAGICAL POWERS of MR finally caused the military defeat of Ltters.

Your people may have been able to bury what happened in the two JVP insurrections but we doubt that you’ll could do the same about thousands of Tamil civilians killed and buried in the North.
You people bought down Navi Pillai hoping to pull the wool over her eyes, but it backfired and the MR government got egg on its face. CHOGOM too might turn out to be another farce. The commonwealth leaders who are attending are not going to keep silent about your governments human rights abuses.
Don’t forget that Kuram Shaik was not killed in Tangalle and his Russian girlfriend raped in the heat of war…its your people who will finally suffer for the mistakes of your leaders if you continue to support whatever dirty deeds they do.

Dear Siva Sankaran David Blocker Sarma,
BBS is not the government my friend. We have our agenda and the governement have theirs. Sometimes BBS do collude with the government when it serves our interest. But we will not collude in any crime. That is all.
BBS had nothing to do with the murder of Kuram Shaik or the rape of his girlfriend. We at BBS are just as shamed as you are my friend. The police have to do what they need to do. Please leave BBS out of that equation.
BBS had nothing to do with Navi Pillai visiting Sri Lanka. We have nothing against what she said. She is welcome to her opinion.

“Our agenda dear Native Veddah is to save Buddhism”
There is no need for you to save Buddhism if you stop destroying it.
“in the process create a unified Sri Lankan identity.”
In the process you are definitely going to destroy Buddhism as we know it and you are rest assured you are going to divide the people than unite them.
Sinhala/Buddhists as people never desired nor created an inclusive idea which could help to build a state of rainbow coalition. Your people are an enemy of unity in diversity.
What is this unified identity?
Seriously, could you define it?
Is it a Sinhala/Buddhist project to create more destruction?
“Not a Tamil Nadu identity nor a Saudi identity.”
Tamilnadu has its own identity within a multi-nation India. Why would they want to live with parochial, nasty, little, nationalistic, stupid Sinhala/Buddhists?
You do not want Saudi identity. Good thought. However shamelessly you continue to send your women folks to earn petrodollars while your men rape their own daughters at home.
If I were you my priority would be to protect Sinhala/Buddhist children from their own fathers.
We do not need unified identity. However we need children to live in a safe and secure environment, grow as children and enjoy their childhood without the fear of their fathers.
Further your men should be sent to Saudi permanently so that the children are safe at home with their mothers. Mothers too will be safe from Saudi brutality.
When are you going to start work on my above proposal?
Casino is supposed to be a very good business for a few. Opium was forced onto Chinese by the British and Americans and we know what had happened to the ordinary people. Casino gambling is now forced on to stupid people by none other than the Sinhala/Buddhist leadership.

Congratulations Leena Manimekalai,
I am so delighted to hear that your film “White Van Stories” has reached the international arena through Channel 4. The clip gives an unbiased view of the white van menace in Sri Lanka: victims are Tamils, Sinhalese and Muslims; though the vast majority of victims are Tamils. The white van era continues unabated, at least for the Tamil victims concerned.
I know of your dedication to truthful film making through your tweets.
I watched the video clip on another one of your true stories – Sengkadal (red sea) taken sometime back. It too should reach the international viewers in my opinion to tell the world what’s happening in the Palk Straits to Tamil fishermen.
Keep up your good work, collaborate with Channel 4, so that truth can prevail over evil in this world.
I wish you all the success in your chosen career.

“The Eelam war is history. The white van legacy is history”.
No, they are still going on, your writing itself is self evedent. Eelam is precisely 47 years old when it ended. Winners write “history” to justify their actions, but, truth must come out, only way it can happen is to investigate the atrocities or actions of both parties, “winners” and “enemies”.
Anything told or written by one party alone is a story. Journalists, ie., independent journalists won’t rest until the truth is out. If any party tries to prevent an independent probe with its own representative in it then it is obvious why it does so.
White van abductions are still going on. The friends of the winners tell lies in UN, attorneys offices and in courts just to get favours to enjoy perks or power. To protect lies the winners erect fences with hundred odd ministers, government officials, diplomats, de facto Supreme Court judge and foreign tyrannical governments, but, one day the Karma sees to it that the truth comes out.
/
BBS Rep / October 28, 2013
My dear Saro,
What is the point in going over these unfortunate occurrences again and again? Will muckraking bring the dead back to life? The answer is no. Will investigation into atrocities committed by both parties, winners and losers alike, bring reconciliation? The answer is no. In fact it will alienate the people even further.
And for those who are grieving – the families that lost sons and daughters, will prising out the truth alleviate their pain? The answer is no. In fact it will open afresh the wound that are trying to heal.
Supposing investigation into atrocities is completed and those wrong doers are punished. Will that help remove the grief of those who lost loved ones? The answer unfortunately is no.
Pursuit of vengeance almost always is self-defeating Saro.

Does prosecuting a murderer bring back the murdered? No. Yet, we prosecute the murderer to serve justice and to stop him/her murdering even more. The Sri Lankan state murdered 10s of thousands in the south. Nobody did anything. So they continue killing people with no hesitation. To stop this culture of impunity there has to prosecutions
/
RuwanL / October 29, 2013
We prosecute murderers as its either premeditated or done out of anger and there may be people to give evidence! In a war situation it is different. The army was fighting a full scale war! If you have an investigation how can you point out who killed the civilians? From where are you going to get the evidence? The LTTE even armed the civilians to fight for them. The 10s of thousand southerners who died during the JVP time can there be an investigation done as to who did the killing? NO! not practically possible!!

Actually this film should be a fiction as there is no White Van related disappearance ever happened in Sri Lanka. Western Countries, Tamil Diaspora and other powerful Nations are creating problems for our Saddrmadveepa Chakrawarthi’s Govt.
Somebody should send the Video of our Saddarmadveepa Chakrawarthi’s recent Interview with Al-Jazeera for Leena to know the noble truth about White Van disappearance. There our Saddarmadveepa Chakrawarthi revealed top secret to the entire world that In Sri Lanka Young Girls and Boys are using White Van to go to Guest houses and Rest Houses to make Love. Now Parents are more careful about their kids after realizing their tricks.
There is Prageeth Eknaligoda’s Dissapearance in the film. Our Cheap Justice, Mr. Moron Peiris said at Geneva Human rights session that he got the information from the Intelligence that Prageeth is in a western Country. Even Hon. Arundika Fernando, MP also said that he has seen Prageeth in France. In my Opinion we should believe them as our Peoples representatives and Cheap Justice never lie to Gen. public.
Actually there is no White Van or other kind related disappearance in our Dharmadvvpaya. People disappear themselves. Journalists got killed themselves. Samurdi Officers got tied to tries by themselves. Media Institutions were set on fire by themselves to claim Insurance. Ranaviru Majors get assaulted by themselves. All these to embarrass the Saddarmadveepa Chakrawarthi’s Govt. and Tamil Diaspora and the Powerful Western Countries are behind this kind of things.
My advice to this Film Director, Leena to take Commonwealth Sec. Genaral Kamalesh Sharma as example and make Films about Giant Development work going on in Sri Lanka such as Uthuru wasanthaya, Expressways, Mattala Mahinda Rajapaksha International Airport, Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksha Internation Port, Mahinda Rajapaksha Stadium, Nelum Pokunu, Ranminithanna Tele Village, Independent Judiciary, Media Freedom etc. etc. or at least read Dinamina, Daily News, Divaina, Mawbima, The Nation, Lakbima and watch ITN, Rupawahini to know the truth about Sri Lanka.

I also heard it from one of my good friends that her cousin s son was happened to face white van case similar what you have explained above. He was blind folded abducted by a white van, but had released near to Kurunegala or so. Then again, going to back to the period – two years ago or so, I heard that there exist some robbers that abduct innocent poor people to steal their kidneys and other organs ( most of the time, kidneys). Neth FM had broadcasted about the issue a couple months back.
Even if some abductions are not directly by MR or GR ^s white vans, their indifference white van culture to become taking for granted is not excusable by anyone. THey are the rulers that are today making everything unacceptable things acceptable for their advantage abusing the parliamentary 2/3 mandata. Constantly telling palatable lies to the stupid masses (commonly, majority of poor country are naive and stupid to believe whatever the rulers just sprout), as yesterday MR was publicly speaking that he has fulfilled all key pledges. But not even mentioning a single word about Re Enforcement of law and order and abolishing excutive presidency. BBBB

It is a same story I have to tell,
When Ranil was Prime minister of UNP regeme, in 1980s
As my brother who is a Farmer, abducted by the Armed or police forces and taken to Gampaha Chithra lane Torture house behind police barracks.
[after many years we came to know that place].
And they have tortured him for 8 days .
He did not /does not have any affiliation to Marxists or JVPs.
but taken in to custody for personal revenge.
we were searching him all over the island prison camps but no avails.
after contacting very influential politician, we tried to get his where about and
after the help and intervention of late Ven Dulapitiye Wimalarthana thero,
He was dumped in to a culvert near Ekala industrial park with many injuries in the body and
they have forced him to keep quiet tell any informations to any body.
He could not talk many days and was sick for 3 years because of torture injuries.
On an another instance.
And I had to intervene to get release, one of our Tamil neighbour’s son who was A L educated Fisherman, very well known to me, my brothers and close friends, who worked in the SL forces.
When this fisher boy coming from seashore, one of his schoolmate stopped to talked to him as a casual friend who plays foot,
who happened to be LTTE a supporter,
After arresting that LTTE supporter, Forces soldiers arrested that fisher boy also and taken to eastern command and 5 days tortured him hanging from his legs and hands.
After the intervention and introduction from my friends, with personal guarantee,Eastern command unit Intelligence chief released him but his friend is believed be killed by ????.
And fisherboy went to Uk for further education and became a Solar tech engineer.
It is Very Sad those Dalu Bandas, JIN soththyas, KA sumanas {all RuwHan Ferdnadas}, Malindas, Rajpals who knows nothing about or pretend that nothing happened, telling us garbage talks with Jarapassa and Hothmbaya’s clans like PRAWNS WITH SHIT ON THE BRAIN .

We left the hostel (hilda obeysekara) leaving behind our all belongings when they closed the unis back and forth. Later I left for Europe for my education and settled there. I think very same era has got back to the country under MR administration today. People criticise CBK, but she was the leader who managed aftermath of 89 Insurgency and allowed JVP to enter the parliament. Today, those who are inside, would never feel that there exists all kind of restrictions to allow only their favorable DAILY NEWS type of information. This should be the very reason the same people to have voted for Dayasiri Jayasekara owning him a great election victory. Like it is for North koreans, people in the south and other areas are now made not to go against MR views. This becomes clearer when one would hold mixed opnion polls ascertaining the people^s voices. nnn

The Rajapakshe regime is in a flat spin and at its wits end after reports that only heads of 13 of the 42 countries so far having confirmed their arrival for the Rajapakshe’s most dreamed much hyped forthcoming Commonwealth heads of government meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Sri Lanka, based on informed foreign Ministry sources within.
The number of members of the Commonwealth countries is 43. Of them 32 are smaller countries. India the largest member had reportedly informed that its head will not be attending the conference. Canada too had already stated directly that it will not be participating in the conference to be held in Sri Lanka, as Rajapakshe regime is considered as among those countries leading in human rights violations.
Though the State leaders of countries including England have agreed to participate in the conference, owing to the outrageous violations of the commonwealth covenants by the Medamulana barbaric regime, they have informed that they are making this an opportunity to be here mainly to bitterly slate Rajapakshe regime over the human rights violations. In these dire circumstances, the Medamulana regime is making a desperate bid going around begging the smaller countries to attend the event, it is learnt.
Moreover, since the anticipated funds have not been received, the Rajapakshe regime is plunged in a crisis , consequently it had raked all the funds in the public treasury towards the commonwealth conference expenditure, with the result that it is hard put to it now to meet the expenses of the government Institutions. The heads of the latter say, the Institutions are unable to receive even a sum as small as Rs. 50,000 under the circumstances.
/
Dhaksha / October 28, 2013
Now the regime has to face the consequences and criticism of yet another unsolved crime in the country.
The White Van curse, is not imagination, people, journalists, and critics of the government have mysteriously vanished, this is documented. People are not imagining their loved ones are missing…we also have first hand stories of attempted abduction in white vans, so since the rajapaksa’s are as usual show indifference, total irresponsibility for such crimes, no arrests nor justice for the families, they now have to face world condemnation for either being inept, or being involved in such horrible crimes. It is strange that those who “vanish” are those who are against the government. There is no point attacking the producers or those who show this – if the rajapaksa’s were more cooperative with the international community, and answered the many investigations regarding the disappearance of Sri Lankan citizens, then this movie would not have been an issue. The ruthless regime must now face the music, deservedly so.
/
Patriot / October 28, 2013
What music, man? Royal Commonwealth Society report, Commonwealth Compared 2013, which measured 168 countries on human rights criteria such as press freedom, democracy and inequality, ranked Sri Lanka 68th in the world and 14th in the Commonwealth – comfortably in the top half of each.
Now mind you, India’s stand in that chart is much lower than Si Lanka. It is at 103rd in the world and 25th place in the Commonwealth. Isn’t it rather funny India want to boycott Sri Lanka on rights? We do not hear UK and Canada calling to boycott a summit in India or other countries that are listed below Sri Lanka?
One more thing, if they prepare a list on ‘terrorism eradication’ with criteria such as development, elections and peace after the war ended, Sri Lanka will reach the very top of it.

The law should be applied fairly to all citizens. In a true democracy, only the police has the power to arrest someone suspected of a crime, and that too, with an order issued by a magistrate in some instances.
The suspect should have recourse to legal counsel and be represented by a lawyer when being questioned. He cannot be interrogated in private with no independent witnesses. He should not be detained any longer than is necessary to be produced before a civil court of law.
Indefinite detention without charges being laid, created legal infamy in the USA under George W Bush’s Patriot Act which sought to use illegal means of discouraging “terrorism” which was simply a ruse to suppress dissent of US activities in Iraq, Afghanistan etc and those sympathetic to the murder victims (of millions of innocents in those countries, by the US/UK).
