By Lal Wickrematunge –
“The clock of life is wound but once,
and no man has the power to tell when the hands will stop,
at late or an early hour.
Now is the only time you own.
Live, love, toil with a will.
Place no faith in time.
For the clock may soon be still.”
That may well be true, if the cycle of life is allowed to take it’s full course . But, it was the vile man ( men) who went against the natural order to stop the hands from turning, to snuff out the full cycle of Lasantha running it’s course.
Time and again, it has proven that no man can alter the course of nature and continue to do so, with impunity. Pay back will come at a time when it is least expected to those who take it upon themselves to mock at the natural order of life. Man’s biggest aphrodisiac AND failure, is man’s continued power over other man. One will always be followed by the other. Men become no more than wild animals when power is bestowed in disproportionate doses. It requires education and a large dose of breeding to stay away from falling prey. None of which is evident amongst our present crop of rulers. If there was a semblance of it, all those journalists who have been killed, assaulted, abducted and forced to flee would have had the full force of justice with them.
The timing, of the wheels of justice moving at this late stage into the killing of the students in Trincomalee, reeks of opportunism. Was CHOGM the catalyst? Would these fail in court? Would the government want the forces to be demoralised , however warped that kind of thinking may be? A rational thought process given the track record thus far.
To justify actions that are populist, simply on the basis of appealing or shaping the minds of the less educated has disastrous repercussions in the long term. Sections of the educated class with easy access to the powers that be, may well believe “it’s now or never” to pile up tainted money which seemingly propel them to an assumed plane in society. The standards of which appeal only to those who think alike. This shortsighted approach will leave their progeny to deal with a nation where survival will depend on patronage and muscle.
Hark back to the immediate aftermath of Lasantha’s killing. From the highest in the land to those tasked with carrying out their bidding, promised to unravel and bring to justice the perpetrators AND those who initiated such murder to book. The politician tasked with mouthing the regime’s official position made a solemn promise before a collective gathering of the media that this murder will be solved within three months!! That was in the first quarter of 2009!! maybe that was the ploy to deal with the situation at the time. Sri Lankans forget. Politicians know that.
It’s no secret that those in power know exactly how Lasantha was done in. In any other self respecting nation the words thus far uttered in relation to Lasantha’s murder, by “those in the know” would surmount to circumstantial evidence. Not in this pseudo “Thrice Blessed” nation. The President’s brother was the target of LTTE terrorists and escaped without harm, fortunately. He was driven to Temple Trees, where a relieved President was seen hugging his brother. That was a very emotional moment. A natural feeling in any human being towards a sibling.Lasantha however, did not survive. I feel similarly about my brother. That too is natural. Or is it?

Lasantha’s murder is still a mystery, there are so many stake holders, strangely almost all of them seem to be busy on their own chosen carriers (apart from occasional anniversary obituary notices and appreciation)
One wonders where are the following people and what have they done to solve the mystery puzzle ?
Sonali ,Rasia , Lal,Uvindu, Fedricka ?
What is the position of Gen SF, Brigadier Duminda Kappetiwalana , 6 man hit squad on this high profile murder ?
there are so many unanswered questions ?
what are the real reasons behind Lasantha’s assassination ? was it because he was an international spy ? was he against MR ? was he against the ruling elite ? against the military ? or did Lasantha kill himself to tarnish the image of SL ?
/
John / July 15, 2013
Lal W,
I need to know only one thing, Was Lasantha more a politician than a Journalist ? Was his “journalism” mde his paper a offical newspaper of a political party ?
Even the fatal day he was driving to meet a leader of opposition, according to media reports ? isn’t it so ?
Of course, killing of Lasantha was a barbaric act.

Do they consider it at all plotting such killings ?
I believe the incumbent president know a to z about all these killings and disappearances

Siva Sankaran Sarma / July 15, 2013
This reads like a list of card carrying LTTE propagandists – who, according to our friends at NATO, would have made perfectly legitimate targets, for “making an important contribution to the propaganda war which orchestrated the campaign against the population”:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_bombing_of_the_Radio_Television_of_Serbia_headquarters
Considering that most of the rest were killed by the LTTE, I’d say the erstwhile Sun Goat would know more about them than the incumbent president :-)

This is just a drop of the info that one can surf on the web,
if you further search for them, you will get more about. Fyi, I am a born srilanken living on the west today – for me I dont care me being sinhalese or tamil, though my roots are from southern part of the country. I dont need to support any kind of terror groups, be them LTTERS, JVPers or newly born BBS. My worries are about the security for average like my parents and the relatives, if the crime incidents become essential items of their daily agendas under current rule in the country. Sun god is no longer there, MR is still existing. So try to find it approaching him :)

It says it all when a blatantly chauvinist and racist Sinhalaya uses a Tamil-sounding pseudonym!
You obviously don’t have enough Rajapassa boots to lick that you find the time to write absolutely incomprehensible rubbish to this net publication.

You are a ………… unmentionable! What the hell has Lasantha being a politician or a journalist got to do with a cold-blooded gangland-style assassination?

You have heard of the ‘Doobie Brothers,’ and the ‘Bellamy Brothers.’ Now put your hands together Ladies and Gentlemen…for ‘Rogerproxy and the Righteous Brothers,’ who will perform their new ‘hit single,’ We Shot The Lasantha, And We Also Burnt The MTV (sung to the tune of ‘I Shot the Sheriff’) the harmonizing is done by the ‘Mahasone Balakaya Singers’ and the ‘K9 Choir of Vienna.’
We Shot The Lasantha, And We Also Burnt The MTV
(sung to the tune of ‘I Shot the Sheriff’)
By Rogerproxy and the Righteous Brothers
We shot the Lasantha, and we also burnt the MTV.
We shot the Lasantha, and we also burnt the MTV.
All around in ‘The Land of the Blind,’
They are blaming our ‘Gang of Four’.
They say they want to bring us in guilty,
For the killing of ‘Lasantha’,
And burning of the ‘MTV’.
But we say:
We shot the Lasantha, and we also burnt the MTV,
but we swear it was not in self-defense, (it was just to teach the media a lesson.)
We shot the Lasantha, and we also burnt the MTV,
and we say it is a minor offense…(an International Conspiracy)
Lasantha always hated us;
For stealing the ‘Tsunami Aid’ and ‘Crooked Arms Deals’.
He exposed are dirty deals in the ‘Sunday Leader,’
So we said ‘Kill him before he exposes more!’
So we said ‘Kill him before he exposes more!’
We say:
We shot the Lasantha, and we also burnt the MTV,
but we swear it was not in self-defense, (it was just to teach the media a lesson.)
We shot the Lasantha, and we also burnt the MTV,
and we say it is a minor offense…(an International Conspiracy)
Lasantha was on his way to the office,
To expose all our dirty deals.
So we shot, we shot him down.
We say:
We shot the Lasantha, and we also burnt the MTV.
We shot the Lasantha, and we also burnt the MTV.

Lasantha was a politican before he cut his teeth into journalism he was heavily involved with the unp but not as an offical because he wanted to have his vision for sri lanka established through them his journalism had nothing to do with his political work his expose’s were all based on what he knew and he would have exposed corruption even if it was in the unp
Lasantha would have made an outstanding politician and could have become a great great prime minister or even president because he was so into human rights and had charisma and integrity
99.9% of the politicans dont have any of that

After reading current article and selected few other comments posted on other threads about one of the latest murders- 70 year old N perera^s, I am shocked about the security situation in my home country for the moment and it should be horrifying. Why the authorities fail to take due actions regarding the control of the crimes in general should be studied by local or international bodies before human losses reaching its exaggerating levels. If this is the saddest reality of current srilanka, how can they guarantee for the security for the upcoming CW summit? No doubt, each of CW nations are well concerned about security conditions in SL.

Lasantha Wickrematunge was killed by the Rajapaksa government brothers [Edited out] were the main masterminds behind this assasination alongside a sri lankan mobster boss who had a long run in with Lasantha who is now an MP and runs his cover as a buisnessman
[Edited out] also had a part in this however only minor
The rajapaksas who constantly blame Fonseka for lasanthas murdur dont realise how stupid their being as they both blame fingers at each other all the while knowing both partys were involved so nothing can come out of this as long as mahinda is in power.
Lasanthas blood is on the rajapaksas and through the blood he shed the rajapaksas have a curse so large that no amound of “holy” rituals or poojas can attoin for this
This curse will destroy them

Srilal- I’m not sure what you mean when you ask ‘where I am.’ I’m still working at the Leader.
Your comment about him killing himself is a bit ridiculous, if you don’t mind me saying so. There were eye-witnesses who saw what happened.
As to who he was ‘for’ or ‘against’ I think that’s totally beside the point. The point is not who he supported, who he didn’t support and so on. The point is that no one has the right to shoot someone in the head for having an opinion and voicing it.
/
srilal / July 18, 2013
Dear Raisa ,
I owe you an apology if i have hurt you in anyway , I can assure you I did not intend to hurt you or any one for that matter and sincerely hope you would take my writing in the right spirit .
it looks you misunderstood my writing, please allow me to explain . Raisa , my final comment (he killed himself)is merely a sarcastic comment to show how things end up in SL nowadays…(man tied himself to a tree , Army Major hit himself and the very latest, School teacher voluntarily knelt down by herself etc)
“The point is that no one has the right to shoot someone in the head for having an opinion and voicing it”
I must be out of my mind to justify Lasantha’s killing , please do read my other comments here on the subject of Lasantha’s killing , probably then you would be in a better position to judge as to what I attempted to say in this blog.
Regards
/
Safa / July 15, 2013
Given the mode and operation of the killing there is absolutely no doubt that the state was involved. Also many VVIPs are in the know and shielding the people involved. This points to the involvement of a VVIP in the killing. The possible options are only three at the most.
Who killed Cock Robin?
I, said the Sparrow, with my bow and arrow,
I killed Cock Robin.
Who saw him die?
I, said the Fly, with my little eye,
I saw him die.
Who caught his blood?
I, said the Fish, with my little dish,
I caught his blood.

Is this land a thrice blessed nation ? crazy saying by Lal W, Buddhism came from India, Buddhism is not a Sri Lankan religion, Buddhas parents were Hindus, buddhism was hijacked from India, and under the name of Buddhism our yellow robed terrorists are disrupting the peace and harmony of this land, creating tensions with the muslims and desecrating places of worship in other religions as these yellow terrorists are getting bankrupt with many Buddhists being disgusted in the way these yellow terrorists are behaving, so much so that many of them are converting to other religions.
Check out the meats/beef /pork that these terrorists demand from the dana houses when danas are offered to them, even here its not the thrice blessed principle that is adopted, a free for all meals in the name of the dead, what hippocrites one sees in these terrorists who are only desecrating Buddhists and its culture.
WHEN WILL THESE MODAYAS LEARN WHAT TRUE BUDDHISM IS.
/
JULAMPITIYE AMARAYA / July 15, 2013
TO Helena Waidiyasekera.
To my knowledge and education, Buddhism is not a religion.
Buddhism is a Great Phylosophy to learn, understand and discover.
not to a play or drama for politicians or sinners, who wants to get to PIGGY BACK and cheat innocent belivers..
/
Gamini / July 15, 2013
Buddhism is a 100% a religion buddhists who say it isnt are morons
Buddhists believe in rebirth or reincarnation they have idols and worship them they also bow down to man and chant pirith
Ofcouce it is a religion

And followers asked to be blessed, from soldiers to cricketers, we all ask for favours! Remember the pojas asking that “gods help our cricket team beat the Indians at the WC?” etc and even in Murder trials?
Yes of course Buddhism is practiced as a religion!
/
Sun / July 15, 2013
Did not you notice that it is not “just thrice blessed”, but “PSEUDO THRICE BLESSED”.. there lies the difference.
BBS is representatives for the pseudo sinhala buddhists and led by pseudo monks who have no unblemished characters – latter should be the heart feeling of anyone sane if studied the criminal history of GHANASARA. He even dares to argue with the interviewer of Derana that once or several few occasions he happened to even drink alcohol, so confessed it to have driven a lorry breaking the legs of two innocent people being on drunk mode.. how can any healthy beings believe what these uncivilized paradigm spout. They have the bless of GR – who the world court will classify as most brutal, because he belong to IRCs or the like categories only- so no wonder – birds of a feather flock together.

Mr Srilal, why dont you also help to find out? In the meanwhile can you promote Sonali, Rasia, Lal, Uvindu and Fedrika to be IGP, Army Commander, Attorney General, Chief Justice and President so they can do inquiry with power? How else anyone can do so? Make sensible proposal no? I think you must do that. Even try to. Start by writing about it maybe it will happen and soooon case solved and you be happy…no?
/

John, You are very very wrong. lasantha was going to office in his car when he was killed….very close to office near air force base ratmalana. No where was he going to meet opposition politicians. So dont know what media reports you are reading. Anyway all journalists meet opposition and goverment politicians all the while. Nothing in that. Also Leader paper cricise all , even opposition. How else we know whats going on. If lasantha want to be politician its not wrong.supreme court judge warawewa now contesting from UNP. wimal weerawansa also former journalist. SL also journalist.Buddhist monks also journalist and politician.so many many of them. Come on men. They all living. Why only lasantha dead? Dont be misleading men. lasantha was killed…murder…no case…no nothing like Pradeep Eknaligoda and others. Thats the truth. First find killers, murderers and then find if lasantha, pradeep and all other jouranalists was politicians. Murder is criminal offence, being journalist and politician not so.

Sun / July 15, 2013
What do you want to say really ?
The problem is they the rulers have no free and fair policy on these crime investigations. See the case of Baratha ? That ended up with the key accused being freed to continue his all kinda regular jawaram making the victimized families putting much deeper. So, Baratha is said to be one of the closest to the president. And Duminda is seen to be even a family member of Rajapakshes. With all published medical reports of Duminda s injuries appear to be INACCURATE – why nobody succeeded with acceptable reports in that regard – yet to come.

Not only Lasantha’s murder, the Post Mortem report on his body too,is still a mystery – along with PM reports on many other unnatural deaths in custody, and outright murders.
This trend is only during the tenure of the present government.
The Bar Association is unconcerned.
The judiciary too,is unconcerned.
How do murder trials procedd without this most vital evience of time, manner and cause of death?
The Justice System in Sri Lanka is indeed unique – among all nations!

Mahinda/Basil think they can wear lily white clothes,GR thinks decency comes with wearing a tie.
And sycophants comment here as if in love with these people.Any other country leader gets only three to six month honeymoon period after which they are held to account and you certainly don’t find sycophants after 7 long years.
/
Wickramasiri / July 15, 2013
Lasantha was a fearless journalist who had access to sensitive information inside the government and the government killed him. The Sunday Leader office and press was attacked and burnt many times. It was always in close proximity to the Airforce Camp. The killer group operated from within the camp. The Airforce Commander at the time will know. It is likely that the actual killers have been eliminated by now. Make a list of unidentified bodies found during the past few years, and you can get a link to the source. Some of the commentators here who deliberately distort facts are also leaving a trail of clues for follow up.

scenario B he was an international spy for the indians
scenario C he knew about chemical weapons
scenario D It was for exposing the MIG deal with the presidents brother

All these people who try to divert blame from the rajapaksas by coming up with ridiculos conspiracies like
1)Lasantha W Killed himself to make sri lanka look bad
2)Lasantha W was killed by 13 day bride
3)The UNP did it to discredit the government
3)its an international conspiracy against the war effort (Crazy statement from rajapaksa camp)
4)it was mervyin Silva
5)Lal W is protecting his killers
6)Lasantha was killed for being an international spy
7)It was Sarath Fonseka
These are some of the many theorys that are put out so the rajapaksas dont look like the culprits
Dont fall for these allegations we all know it was GOTAHbhaya
Read lasanthas editorial which HE WROTE
OFCOURCE IT WAS GOTABhaya he was also suing lasantha and lal and their printing house lwader publications and Gotabhaya was in charge of the war ofcource he was behind it it was also done by a special unit in the army come on it doesnt take a genius to figure it out
Lasantha himself said it was Mahindas demented brother who was behind it

THILANGA SUMITHAPALA the buissnessman and MP who was also the former cricket board chairman and Chairman of the Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretariat Development Coordination Committee had a role in it
Thilanga Sumithapala was Lasanthas Arch nemesis from the early 90s lasantha was responsible for his imprisonment and it was he who ordered many hit jobs on lasantha which failedif tou do some research you will see this is very plausible.
THE rajapaksas ofcource were the main ones behind it but Thilanga was too

“In the wake of my death I know you will make all the usual sanctimonious noises and call upon the police to hold a swift and thorough inquiry. But like all the inquiries you have ordered in the past, nothing will come of this one, too. For truth be told, we both know who will be behind my death, but dare not call his name. Not just my life, but yours too, depends on it.”

CT would do us a favour by republishing Lasantha’s ‘posthumous’ editorial. That editorial contained clues to a possible suspect. I think we need to create a resurgence of the demand to nab the culprit behind the murder once again and raise issue during CHOGM. This is how we can demand justice in a non violent way and force Mahinda Rajapaksa to act. I notice that it is necessary to wring his little finger to get him to act. This is an opportunity for Lal Wickremetunge to obtain justice.

Lasantha did what he was good at to the best of his ability, knowing for sure that he was in danger. He wanted others to be aware of what is really going on.He paid with his life the ultimate sacrifice. HOW CAN EACH OF US IN OUR AREA OF WORK AND AMONG THOSE WE KNOW JUSTIFY WHAT LASANTHA AND SEVERAL OTHERS GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR.GOOD LUCK SRI LANKANS.

I agree with Nelun in sri lankan politics and buisness or anything to do with the sri lankas elite rich and famous its all about survival nobody has the balls to speak out and its all about boot licking Lasantha knew he would be killed and went with his head held high he rejected any security benefits that were offered to him by the UNP he tried to touch base with the common man and never gave in to bribery or other great advantages that were offered to hin if anyone in sri lanka was offered a ministry of his choice or any role in governence who wouldnt take it
Lasantha had integrity and never sold out he stayed true to himself
People are all egoistic and hypocritical
Lasantha was at the pinnacle of his career yet he was well prepared to leave it all behind and go be with his maker he had nothing to gain by being the voice for the tamils
He was a shining example of a true christian and has recieved what 99% of the current politicos or leaders or top dogs in sri lanka will never a place in Gods kingdom

OPEN YOUR EYES / July 16, 2013
Lasantha Wickrematungas killing took place in broad day light, near his newspapers head quaters, during the final stages of the war, during the gothabhaya/Wickrematunga trial, right after the attack on MTV where he did his show.
Soon after this the defence sec laughed like a sick troubled man when he was asked how he felt about lasanthas death he actually made a fool out of himself and called him a tabloid journalist and laughed nervously.
They were able to catch Prabahkaran who was in hiding for decades yet they cant find lasantha wickrematungas killers?Lasantha Wickramtungas death was one of the biggest shock waves to the country alongside the imprisoning of Fonseka and the impeachment of Shirani Bandranayake everything that took place finally concluded however lasanthas case has been going on now for FIVE YEARS and they still havent found the culprits
reading this comment please go get yourself a brain if you still dont think the rajapaksas were behind it.

Pearl Selva / July 18, 2013
Let us all get together and curse the rajapaksas and their familys and cast evil onto them for what they did to Lasantha.

Peace maker / July 16, 2013
If Lal Wicorematunge were to have been killed in 09 im sure people would scrutinise Lasantha and taunt his every move in trying to find his brothers killers.
Im sure writing this statment itself was painful for Lal.
Lal has guts to put pressure on the government and quiz Mahinda Rajapaksa about it
even the UNP in which lasantha dedicated his life to cant speak up people are so afraid to even have a negative opinion on the Rajapaksas these days.
Lal is fighting a vile and bloody regime for answers and I respect him for this
