Who Is Misleading Muttiah Muralitharan?

By S. Sivathasan

S.Sivathasan

S.Sivathasan

The interview given by Muralidaran to Channel 4, has rustled many a feather. Words apart, is the ease with which he has fallen a victim to the orchestration of the powers that be. Without remorse a whole community has been slandered as being without sense or any sensibility. This has earned him the wrath of everyone, severely affected by the government onslaught, not for days or months or years but for decades.

Having accompanied the UK Prime Minister and being in Jaffna for a few hours, he ventures to set aside all the considered representations of the most responsible spokesmen of the Tamil Community. Who were they? The Chief Minister and political leaders. In one sweep he trashes the agonizing words of the grief stricken mothers and says “these people also can mislead things”. What does Miller say? “Women pleading about the whereabouts of their loved ones, who are still missing”. Miller sees “The distress of these women crying. The unresolved disappearance of their loved ones”. Murali queries nonchalantly “Because of 20 0r 30 mothers crying to me, that means that is the truth”?

So much has he got tethered to the government, he treats the British Prime Minister as trifle. Tell him anything and he will believe. Muralidaran was telling reporters so, says Miller. When pressed he says yes, he was misled. Can a credulous charlatan ever go near Downing Street? He also suggests “anything could happen. So we also doesn’t know the answers”. If it is unknowable, why talk?

The following is a transcript of excerpts from an interview that Jon Snow of Channel 4 had with Muthiah Muralidaran.

Prelude

Prime Minister David Cameron visits the Colombo Cricket Club. After a few doosras by Murali, Cameron, Miller and Murali walk into a group of boys and girls, purported to be players. Miller says, these young cricketers are drawn from across Sri Lanka. Then he identifies one row seated in pre- arranged order by ethnicity and religion. What we have here – Tamil, Sinhala, Sinhala, Tamil, Sinhala, Muslim (a girl), Tamil, Tamil! Murali affirms

Interview

Jon Snow ( JS) Muralidaran had a few things to say about current issues. He was telling reporters that Mr. Cameron was being misled about the condition of Tamils living in the North. …..

JS  He (Muralidaran) says that David Cameron is being misled. I went to talk to him further. Muralidaran was in Jaffna with Mr. Cameron. We were besieged by women with letters, pleading about the whereabouts of their loved ones, who are still missing. You think Mr. Cameron was misled?

MM  War is a two side battle. Anything could happen. So we also doesn’t know the answers for that. Something nobody will find out. Mothers they coming and crying to you.

JS  You think he was misled?

MM  What do you mean he was misled?

JS that is what you felt

MM  YES IT IS MISLED. (MM’s emphasis by raising his eyebrows and tone)

MM  He never came to Jaffna. He never came to Sri Lanka. I don’t know because whether he has come in his younger days. He never came to. He is being told by other people what is happening and what is happening and that is why he wants to go and see Jaffna. Because of twenty thirty mothers coming crying to me, that means that is the truth? You don’t know. Because these people also can mislead things. So it is the truth, very difficult to find. ….

In conclusion Muralidaran said why should we think of the past. Let us talk about the future. He alluded to the loss he suffered in 1977 and how he was able to rebuild.

This statement too has caused ripples. One person’s loss can never match a community’s. A day’s suffering and decades old are not comparable. Collective memory is not erased with the same ease as that of an individual.

Farmers and Cricketers

DS Senanayake, the first Prime Minister of Ceylon was known for his cunning ways. In the late forties he wanted to take Lord Soulbury, the Governor General for a right royal ride. He wanted to impress upon him, how learned even the country’s farmers were. So he took the GG for a drive from Colombo to Kandy, in the same vehicle. At Kegalle as per prior arrangement, the car stopped at the appointed spot. DS clapped his hands and beckoned a farmer tilling his field and clothed in mud to come. He came and DS said GG would like to speak to you. You can speak in Sinhala and I will translate. The farmer said he knew English and spoke to him in fluent English about his genealogy and relatives. GG was greatly impressed. The ‘farmer’ was Sir Edwin Wijeyaratne.

For a nation nurtured in such a culture, composing a purpose built, multi ethnic cricket team comes all too naturally.

    How Sickkkk !!!!

Bullington Kid playing our Muralis’s Doosra’s in the heart of Genocidal Srilanka and under the watch of the War Criminal Prez, whom the Kid has ear marked to hang in the Hague ,in less than five months.

This cricket scene in fact makes history, for the fact that the the Bowler is not even a Vellala,

And he has done a magnificent job to put his motherland on the world Map for the right reasons.

A painting of this needs a prominent spot in the National Gallery for our prosperous posterity.

We ordinary punters love you Murali.

Murali is a good bowler, no doubt, but he is not good at giving interviews. He comes in as being insensitive and naive. There is no doubt, he does belittle the grieving mothers with his insensitive talk.

Yet there is something positive in his statement also. Why keep digging the past which will only create more disharmony.

The Prez and his brothers are still hanging on to the policies of ‘take no prisoners’. We all know how sad the state of law and order is in Sri Lanka. If we replace the Prez as most of those who comment on CT want to see done, I assure you the situation will not change.

My advice is that the citizens need to move on. Punishing the war criminals is not easy, is expensive and will not bring any lasting peace. In fact it will drive the communities even more apart, ensuring more strife in the future.

“Why keep digging the past which will only create more disharmony. “

The past was 4 years ago; people like you want to cover-up or forget the war cimes and continuing state sponsered terrorism because it is your fellow Sinhala supremacists who are the guilty party.

Also don’t act like you care about harmony when you BBS lot are front and center in pushing Sinhala Buddhist fascism.

Murali should have turned the spotlight on the plight of the plantation Tamils which has hardly changed since colonial times instead of having spoken of matters of which he was hardly involved and had only poor knowledge, if at all. It is a pity he decided to betray the Tamil community for a pittance!

Tamils would be ashamed to call this man a Tamil. He would not have had a chance to play in Sinhalese cricket team unless he exposes his 32 pearls to them and washes their back like an idiot. It was unfortunate for Tamils that this man who was an opportunist and a Sinhalese in his behaviour was in the cricket team. For Tamils he was another Kadirgamar whose name was a Tamil but a mega opportunist and lier. THis man is the same no different.

Muralist lost a lot of Tamil fans all over the world. He was ignorant of the feelings of the affected Tamils and spoke without any feelings for the distressed women who lost their loved ones. The man made a real fool of himself and showed himself as a heartless Rajapaksa assslicker. I have lost all respect for him and am sure many millions of decent men and women all over the world have too.

Muthia Muralitharan is a despicable traitor. How can Tamil mothers and wives forget their loved ones, who were kidnapped and killed by Singhalese criminals. Muraledharan’s says that his house was burnt by Singhalese, but today he is living in a palace. So he can forget the past, but not the Tamil widows and mothers, who ;ost their loved ones.

    Shame on Muthia Muraleedharan.

People are asking for justice not for losing their properties in the 77 riots but for losing their priceless gifts from God, their children, husbands, wives, parents…………..etc. This arse is talking about forgetting and forgiving sitting in Colombo as he has made millions of dollars now. These people who are crying are crying for their loved ones and only asking if they are locked up somewhere, then to let them come back to them. First and foremost, I am still in amazement, after hanging around Sangakara, the least this fellow could have done is learn some English from Sanga. What is the sense of being the best bowler when you don’t have a heart. In 1989 many Sinhala mothers cried for their loved ones killed by then serial killer Premadasa, now the Tamil mothers are crying for their loved ones killed by today’s serial killer Mahindaraju. I like to see if this fellow will talk like this if he lost his wife and children to Mahindaraju?

“Sinhala mothers cried for their loved ones killed by then serial killer Premadasa”

What about the thousands of young Sinhalese killed and dumped into the rivers by Bathalawathy during the JVP uprising? You forgot how red the waters of the Kelani ganga and other rivers were and she got international help from all quarters to sqaush this rebellion. Davith Camalong, where were you then? Whay about the weeping mothers then? Dont let Murali mislead you again.

As far as Sri Lankans are concerned Murali is a legendary Sri Lankan. I don’t think he needs the respect of criminals domiciled in west who funded a war to wreck havoc on lives of a third world country. Murali is better than that.

No one including Prime Minister Cameron has not been mislead, except Murali misleading the public by telling lies. In fact it is sad that the world record holder of the most wickets in Test Cricket and One Day cricket has gone to a bowler who has a suspect action at best. This cricketer was protected not by anyone except the Sinhalese people. Therefore he owes everything including his life to them. Based on this as the Sinhalese people have been his saviours how can he tell anything about their government or any human right abuses committed by the present and previous regimes in Sri Lanka. It is impossible. Therefore getting objectify based on honesty from Murali is like asking a Sinhalese whether they are racial towards the Tamils or not. This is my candid view of Murali the man. He is a liar, and a hypocrite. He I suppose shows his small social background at the end of the day.

Great Murali has lost all of his goodwill. I know the difficulty of being independent voice among your Singhalese friends who have helped you during your cricketing career. Your friends are blind on state terror in Sri Lanka. In this cases I’m either independent or silent.

Your reflections on abduction was very destructive. Please make a public pardon if you can. Very recent incidents, a guy in Kilinochchi has been abducted on November 11, 2013 on daylight by white van in front of people followed by a teacher’s abduction on the day of the northern provincial election.

    LTTE Refugees

It is fine for Murali to loose the dignity and his tamil identity. because we never changed him from South by a guy (like they did it in North) I have a feeling all mothers crying for tgheir children was doing it not because they loved it, but LTTE force it

I have great respect to Tamil cultural values. But I have different views on tamil identity. For

If Tamils dont want him ; we in Sri Lanka will accept it with both hands
For Sri lankans, he is a Sri Lankan. He didnt play for a tamil team nor a sinhalese team
he played for the country he was born and grown up.

To be fair to LTTE dumb arses, you can have Cameron. In London he is “not loved by British public”.Want evidence?

They all remember who blocked the road and transport they were not freedom fighters, they we killers and people who fund the killers. UK PM has an election soon, he is fighting for his PM ship isn’t he.

Cameron can not be a judge for this country..(May be for ass licking Tamils, not for genuine sri lankan tamils like Murali) Cameraon met only LTTE supporters, not the people hit by LTTE..No natural justice…Murali! Murali was not a keen student at College. Therefore, he might not have hear of the old saying ‘Do not tread into unknown territories’. He might have been successful in bowling his spins to aiming the batsman and the wickets that are straight in his directions but he has to learn a lot before trying his spins in uneven politics. Of course now since Murali has enough fame and money he might want enter the game of uneven politics as well.

Murali was a senior player and vice captain but was never appointed Captain obviously due to his ethnicity.Poor murali does not realise it.Shameless guy.He has been seen worshipping the Buddist monk and tying pirith noola at the airport each time he went overseas with the team, invoking the non existant god for cricket success.. He never did anything for his hill country brotheren, but pretends to serve the people by his Murali Foundation.
The biggest dissappointment was his faulty English and woeful lack of polish.Shame on his alma mater.Sangakkara ,a product of Trinity would have done better.

Murali has given interviews all over the world in his playing career…he should know that in a TV news bulletin, they cant air all 45 minutes of his “chat” with C4. But only the salient points of the interview at the same time keeping the balance right.C4 exactly did that.

perhpas one day when they have a 3 hour programme “Murali that greatest who lost his balls with Mahnida” they may air his 45 minutes.

Anyhow Mahinda achieved one thing, he made a famous Tamil to say c4 has lost their crdibility, but in DM interview and not in C4 interview

Murali says “just because 20 to 30 mothers come how do you know it is the truth. These people also could mislead”.This is a pretty damning statement by him.He is directly accusing those mothers of lying, which is utterly insensitive.Even among the sinhalese, let alone the tamils there are plenty of missing and their kidneys etc would have brought a big windfall for those who abducted and butchered them. While still alive they may have been cut up and their internal organs taken.By not knowing how they were killed we have to imagine the worst possible death for them.

Murali has made his stand very clear.I don’t think he will be allowed to live in tamilnadu anymore as he has shown his distrust of tamils.

Why would they do that to poor Murali, for telling the world that British Cameron is a goof.

Murali is the only eminent son Tamilnadu ever produced, and the Naduans should beg Murali to come and live there permanently.

If the Naduans listen to Vaiko, Nedu and Jayalitha and hold satyagrahas and fast to death to stop Murali, , it will be bad ,especially when Eelaam PM now calls Naduans his Kith and Kin, when his real relos in the Vellala heartland in Wellawatta don’t even want o there.

“Why would they do that to poor Murali,”

Sumane, murali is living in two countries. He is walking a tightrope here.If he is biased towards one of his homes srilanka, then the other one tamilnadu gets alienated and he will find it very difficult to live there because of anger he has generated.Same way if he had been biased towards tamils at this crucial meeting with cameron he would have found it very difficult to live in srilanka.

He had a choice of being neutral and continuing to have the two abodes, but he has made his stand clear where his heart is regardless wherever his feet may be.Now that tamilnadu knows that, that is why i say he cannot live there anymore because it can be a headache.

As for your contention that tamilnadu has produced its most eminent son,i don’t think any body in tamilnadu will agree with that.MGR,a malayalee from kerala is considered their most eminent son.Besides murali will not consider that he is a product of tamilnadu, but a product of srilanka.Tamilnaduans would not have stood by him in his time of need like arjuna and the sinhalese and muralis career would have been over with less than 100 wickets.India just dumps people in the bin when there is a performance problem or headache because there are so many others applying pressure to get in through the door.See the amount of cricketers who have come and gone there.

Murali is grateful to the sinhalese and now it is payback time when the sinhalese need him most and he has returned the favour.

It is clear that his heart is with the sinhalese and not tamilnadu.Hence i don’t think he will be welcomed anymore there.

I post here an extract form the SPIN Magazine

    SRI LANKAN SPIN

David Cameron has been in Sri Lanka this week, touring the Tamil territories in the north of the island. He had been criticised by Ed Miliband for attending the Commonwealth Summit in Colombo, when other countries, Canada and India among them, had boycotted the event in protest at Sri Lanka’s human rights record. Cameron argued that by going ahead with his visit he was helping to “shine a spotlight” on an issue which has, with a couple conspicuous exceptions, failed to garner much press coverage in this country. And there is some truth in that.

Cameron found time while he was there to play a little cricket. He faced a couple of deliveries from Muttiah Muralitharan. He’s no Alec Douglas-Home – the only prime minister who had played first class cricket – but he is, they say, a handy bat, a better player, certainly, than either George W or John Howard. The more interesting aspect of this particular photo opportunity, though, wasn’t that the politician played cricket, but that the cricketer played at politics. Murali, perhaps the most famous living Sri Lankan, has never made a habit of making such public pronouncements on the political, or social, situation in his country. One of the few Tamil players to represent the country in recent years once told me that he understood Murali’s silence, as he himself felt unable to say anything at all on such subjects, because whatever he said, it was bound to infuriate some, and be twisted by others.

Murali suggested that Cameron had been misled about the severity of the problems facing the Tamil community, that he, in turn, might mislead the rest of the world about them. “He is from England and he had visited this place only yesterday. In wartime I went with the UN. I saw the place, how it was. Now I regularly go and I see the place, and it is about a 1,000% improvement in facilities,” Murali said. “In Sri Lanka the population is around 22 million and in the north there are not more than one million. And they are getting more attention than the south.” There is some truth in that too.

Murali has Tamil heritage himself. And his family have suffered because of it. The factory his father owned was burned down by a mob of angry Sinhalese protestors in the 1977 riots. At the same time, he has stayed reasonably close to the regime of the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa. As one current Sri Lankan Test player explained to me, it simply wouldn’t be possible for Murali to do as much charity work as he does without the support of the President, who, in turn, has always been keen to use Murali’s profile to boost his own standing.

“I played for 20 years in the Lankan team, I did not have any problems as a Tamil,” Murali said recently. “The government and the cricket board always supported me throughout my career.” Partly, it has to be said, that was because he didn’t cause them any problems. As with so many things that seem to be black and white at first glance, look long enough and you soon see the shades of grey.

Tadpole (゜゜)~ told me that he understood Murali’s silence, as he himself felt unable to say anything at all on such subjects, because whatever he said, it was bound to infuriate some, and be twisted by others.(゜゜)~ tadpole

There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong,

but the middle is always evil. ~k゜・_・k゜~

It is unfair for him to say he has been taken by MR. That is how he thinks and how he feels. I suppose most of the Tamil has the same feeling. What he said is utter truth even if it is not appealing to some of us. We shouldn’t rate him going against Tamils if a Tamil says the truth as he feels. To me, what he said is very true. General people were killed by both the SL army and LTTE. We should forgive and forget everything if we want to develop the country. Otherwise we won’t see any progress in the country. People in the other countries even Tamils, Singhalese and Muslims don’t care about the country as much as people living the country. They will try to maintain the fire for theur own benefits. PEACE FOR THE COUNTRY.!

there is no more LTTE. there is no point of talking about the past,as muralitharan said think about the future. of course I agree that people are missing and killed innocently in north. but what you going to do about it, can you bring them alive? let me give a example,

In 1990 more than 104 muslims killed and more are injured, and still more than 200 muslims were missing at Eravur,Batticaloa. this figure is just one of the incidents.

david cameron what are you going to do about it?
the life has to move on….
all the very best Sri lanka.
